Book Description
The placid village of Lymstock seems the perfect place for Jerry Burton to recuperate from his accident under the care of his sister, Joanna. But soon a series of vicious poison-pen letters destroys the village's quiet charm, eventually causing one recipient to commit suicide. The vicar, the doctor, the servants—all are on the verge of accusing one another when help arrives from an unexpected quarter. The vicar's houseguest happens to be none other than Jane Marple.

Agatha Christie Fooled Me Again!.......2007-10-03
A young man and his sister from London rent a house in a country town so he can recover from his injuries. Shortly after arriving, they receive an anonymous letter accusing them of not really being siblings. They soon find out that people all over town have been receiving such letters. This leads to two deaths.
The detectives, this man and his sister do most of the sleuthing. Toward the very end of the book, the vicar's wife calls in Miss Marple who is able to put the final pieces together.
Agatha Christie usally "gets me" about half the time (as far as guessing, "who done it,"), and she got me on this one! A pleasant read.
Pointing Around.......2007-08-18
"The Moving Finger" by Agatha Christie begins somewhat enigmatically, with an unknown narrator telling the story in first person, which is unusual for Christie's mysteries. The narrator turns out to be a pilot, injured in a plane crash, who has been adviced by his doctor to seek out some quite countryside where he can peacefully continue to heal. The narrator and his sister, Jerry and Joanna Burton, take a house in the seemingly quiet and quaint town of Lymstock, but soon learn that the town isn't quite what it seems.
Shortly upon arriving in the small town, Jerry and his sister receive a vile letter, accusing them of not really being brother and sister. They take little notice of it until they learn that other townspeople have received similar letters, which don't contain much truth, but lots of suspicion. When one of the letters causes someone to commit suicide, further light is shed upon these nasty accusations; and when a young maid is found murdered, Jerry begins to think that the first death might not have been suicide. While the police are searching for the most-likely female perpetrator, the pastor's wife calls in Miss Marple to solve the mystery, as all of the townspeople are ready to think of the worst of whoever might be singled out next.
"The Moving Finger" is a classic Christie mystery, even if the first-person storytelling is a departure from the norm. It has a fast-paced intriguing plot with a subtle twist at the end of the story. Jerry never quite touches upon the real perpetrator of these crimes, but is shown the light by Miss Marple, as is any character in Christie's works, and as is usually the reader.
Miss Marple Lite.......2007-06-26
RAF pilot Jerry Burton, needing a lengthy stint of R&R, moves into the village of Lymstock with his sister Joanna. Peace and quiet aren't necessarily on the local agenda, however. Burton soon finds himself on the receiving end of an anonymous poison pen letter. He's not the only person to get one, either. Though the accusations are wild, gossip and suspicion spread. Matters escalate when one letter prompts an apparent suicide and a murder soon follows. Despite all the nastiness, Christie manages to weave a cute little Cinderella story into the plot and love blossoms in the end.
THE MOVING FINGER is a typically clever and well-plotted Agatha Christie mystery. It's populated with interesting and believable characters and the clues are there for the astute reader to find. It's reportedly one of Christie's personal favorites. I liked it, too, but there are several other Miss Marple mysteries I enjoyed more. Partly, this is because I simply found some of the other cases more intriguing, but it's also because, as others have pointed out, Jane Marple plays only a peripheral role in this one. The story is told in the first person from the perspective of Jerry Burton. Miss Marple isn't even mentioned until about two-thirds of the way through the book, and even then she's only introduced as a house guest of one of the lesser characters. Her only significant role is to explain the details at the end.
THE MOVING FINGER is another quality mystery from Agatha Christie. Miss Marple fans may find this outing disappointing, however, as she plays her most minor role. I liked it, but it doesn't rank among my personal favorites.
The Moving Finger.......2006-11-30
A Miss Marple novel published in 1942, this mystery is one of Agatha Christie's own favorites. Set in what by all appearances seems to be the quiet village of Little Furze, the place where the injured pilot Jerry Burton goes with his sister Joanna to recuperate, it doesn't take long to learn that the place is in a bit of a turmoil. Someone is sending nasty letters to various residents; even Jerry and Joanna receive one accusing them of an incestuous affair. Before long a suicide and a murder occur because of the letters. Investigation shows that the letters are composed of words and passages cut from old books. Miss Marple is eventually let in on what's been going on, and just before another murder is about to take place, she solves the mystery. The story is tight and interesting. There are also a couple of love stories going on as subplots, which resolve themselves nicely by novel's end. It's a most satisfying mystery from the master.
One of Christie's Finest.......2005-12-06
This is a great book. The story is being told by Jerry Burton, an appealing narrarator, very human. Although the plot is great, the mystery nearly impossible to figure out, subtle clues presented throughout the book, this may make a better read the second time around, since its fun to find things that people said that meant more than one thing. The only reason it's not 5 stars is that Ms. Marple, Christie's charming lady detective, is called in as "an expert" where the local police have failed- vaguely reminiscent of Sherlock Holmes... She is hardly in the book at all, she simply explains it when the whole thing is over. Jerry Burton takes the limelight as the actual detective. Still, this is definetly one of Christie's best, and I highly recommend it!

The Moving Finger, having been written, lets us move on.......2003-07-04
Bennie Friedman, a half-Irish, half-Jewish cop in Los Angeles, is having problems. His new wife has just died of cancer, and it seems she had secrets that Bennie didn't know about (her cancer and the 9 million dollar estate she left him for starters). A Vietnamese used car salesman has been garrotted and he gets the cold case to solve. While the case may be cold, the victim's wife definitely isn't. Nor is a hooker that Bennie has helped out in the past. There is a paramilitary religious cult that might have something to do with all of this. And then there is the thing about amputated trigger fingers cut off from the accumulating corpses...they move around, hence the title.
The story is OK, Bennie is an interesting protagonist we would like to meet again, and the book moves along in the first half. It is never suspenseful though, and the storyline runs out of gas in the second half of the book. Good potential for a series; hopefully this is not the best book Bass wrote, and better was to come. This is the first of his books I have read. I would read another if I had access to it.

Offbeat Genius.......2004-12-05
Like most of Blaylock's contemporary fantasies, this book left me with the odd but pleasurable sensation that the author was either a scant few inches from discovering the secrets of the Universe, or he was a complete idiot. Although I've met Mr. Blaylock on two or three occasions, I still can't make up my mind. In either case, this book is one of my very favorites. Only Blaylock would pit a delightfully quirky would-be Innkeeper like Andrew Vanbergen against the demonic Pennyman when the fate of the world hung in the balance. The plot, including its absurd references to the current street address of Judas Iscariot, is so wildly improbable that I have to suspect that it's true. This book is a must-read for anyone who's ever wondered if miracles and toaster ovens can co-exist in the same kitchen. Oh, and if you happen to run into Mr. Blaylock... ask him about the pig.
Jeff Edwards, Author of "Torpedo: A Surface Warfare Thriller"
Foibles Foil the Apocalypse.......2002-06-17
The evil Jules Pennyman is out to collect 30 ancient silver coins, each one a magical talisman, paid to Judas to betray his Master two millenia ago. The last coin lies somewhere in Southern California, and Andrew Bergen, a foolish, but likeable loser is its unwitting caretaker.
In this unlikely setting, Blaylock unfolds a realist-fantasy of subtle humor and adventures that don't quite cross over the border into farce. Populated with such delightful obscurities of American culture as Wheetabix (used to be Ruskets, no sugar added, got mushy real fast) cereal and a Nash Metropolitan, the novel delights as much with trivial backdrops as with plot and character.
The plot unfolds as a competition between the court jester (Bergen) and the evil magus (Pennyman). Thinking himself a great schemer, Bergen's innocence keeps getting him into misadventures that slowly advance and unfold the plot. Pennyman, meanwhile, acts directly, and with Knowledge. Although he sees through Bergen, cannot fathom his behavior, and therein lies the possibility of saving the world.
Quirky. Adventurous. More fun than a barrel full of hobbits. A must read unless your fantasy just =HAS= to be populated with dragons, orcs, and the like. ...
Blaylock Farce.......2002-03-11
J.P. Blaylock's THE LAST COIN defies genre identity--best to call it Blaylock farce. It's not the sort of book I wanted to quit reading, hoping it might have a creative ending. Unfortunately there wasn't any actual ending beyond the disappearance of the villain and death of his murderous female partner. The search for the thirty pieces of silver Judas received for betraying Christ, the plot in its entirety, may still be in progress and someday some creature may collect them all and achieve immortality. The fable is struck in such a realistic setting with such a lineup of unbelievably stupid characters that it's life blood must surely have been drawn from an actual human vein. I'm surprised Hollywood hasn't snapped this one up, complete with the Hollywood ending.
Brilliant, idiosyncratic fantasy.......2002-01-21
I have to confess, I am not here to "critique" this book--I am here to rave about it. First, though, I must warn that this is not for everyone. Some people simply do not get Blaylock; they don't see his point. This book, like most of his early work, does not have "plot", precisely. Not in any traditional sense. It is not linear. The characters do not act in a rational manner. Impossible things are constantly happening, and this, of course, is what the book is about.
The Last Coin is heir to books like The Digging Leviathan, and was really the last such book that Blaylock wrote before he "came of age", or grew up, as I tend to see it. His later works are much more serious, a little more cold, and not quite so charming. His writing keeps getting better with every book, though--check out Winter Tides and tell me you don't envy the gift of such beautiful prose.
My face got sore from grinning while I was reading this. There simply has never been anything like this written by any other author. The people who look to Blaylock thinking he is another Tim Powers should forget about this book. (Blaylock's better). Titanic forces are at work, but they settle their differences in some petty ways. Joke nickels pounded into the floor, rubber squids, gag letters in the newspaper... I could go on. But it would be better if you read the book for yourself. I passed this one around when I was done with it. Blaylock is a brilliant artist who deserves to be read, and a handful of his other novels are just as good. Don't deprive yourself!
A wonderful, zany adventure.......2001-05-15
I wouldn't call it great literature, but this is a truly hilarious book which takes the kind of obsessive cranks and eccentrics Blaylock depicted so well in "The Digging Leviathan" and thrusts them into an off-the-wall occult thriller. Apparently this book isn't to everyone's taste, but if you have enjoyed Mark Helprin, Douglas Adams or "Northern Exposure" you are bound to like this wacky romp through Seal Beach CA.

This is a funny, thoughtful, poetic and deeply engaging book. If you don't get it the first read, like me, read it again, and you will realize what the author is trying to evoke and how well he succeeds. I have read this book at least a couple of hundred times. Product Description
From August 2001 to February 2002, the Austrian conceptual artist Rainer Ganahl, who lives and works in New York, created a series of drawings entitled "Die letzten Tage der Sigmund Freud Banknote" (The Last Days of the Sigmund Freud Banknote). This series is in reference to the introduction of the Euro as the new Austrian currency and the discontinuance of the Austrian 50 Schilling banknote, which bears a portrait of Sigmund Freud. In consideration of Freud's importance for dream analysis, Ganahl recorded his dreams each morning until February 28, 2002, when the Schilling ceased to be a legal tender in Austria. Each drawing contains one 50 Schilling note, the dream and its associations, as well as the daily recorded value of the 50 Schilling banknote in different currencies and the number of books on sale at major online booksellers, Amazon.com and Buecher.de. With an introduction by the artist and texts by Paul Mattick, professor of philosophy at Adelphi University, and Sylvère Lotringer, General Editor of Semiotext(e), and a professor at the Center for Comparative Literature and Society at Columbia University. 100 color plates.

Book Description
Originally published in the fall of 1982, the wonderfully wise and strikingly simple story of a leaf named Freddie has become one of the most popular books of our times. How Freddie and his companion leaves change with the passing seasons, finally falling to the ground with a winters snow, is an inspiring allegory illustrating the delicate balance between life and death. After offering solace for a generation of adults and children alike, The Fall of Freddie the Leaf arrives in a classic edition with a beautiful new package that will appeal to todays readers at a time when stories of comfort and inspiration have become more important than ever.
Customer Reviews:
More Than Grief Counseling.......2007-09-23
Many people first encounter "Freddie" during the times surrounding the deaths of loved ones, but the value of the book goes far beyond grief counseling.
The story of Freddie the Leaf is ultimately not just about death, but about becoming attuned to the cycles of life. As such, it should be bought and read to children regardless of whether a loved one is dying. A large part of the story is concerned with how Freddie lives and relates to the world around him: the other leaves on his tree, the tree itself and to the world surrounding the tree, the people and creatures inhabiting that world and so on.
This is a book about how we relate to the Universe, how we find a place in it that is right for us, and how we see ourselves as part of its inevitable movement. Death is only a part of that movement.
The grief caused by death is, after all, not about the death itself, but rather about the absence of the loved one. The understanding of death does not lessen the pain of that absence, but it does place it in a context that is larger than any specific death.
Freddie's reluctance to let go and fall, is really about his failure to relax into his place in the larger context. Once he sees himself as a part of the Universe, he finds peace and contentment in it. As such, "The Fall of Freddie the Leaf" is an extraordinarily effective way of introducing, not only discussions about death, but discussions with children (and adults, I might add) about the rhythms of life, and how making a good death is largely dependent on living a good and authentic life, as Freddie did.
The book is, after all, sub-titled, "A Story of Life for All Ages," and as such, it deserves to be on everyone's bookshelf whether they are dealing with a death in the family or not.
One of my favorite books.......2007-08-05
One of my favorite books. I send this book instead of flowers to people who have lost a loved one. Will make you cry but in a good way.
Must Have.......2007-05-15
Great book for young kids dealing with the loss of a loved one.
A great comfort..........2007-03-17
I received this book after my grandfather passed away. Coincidentally it was the same year this book was published. I still have it to this day. It is one of the few books that I truly cherish.
Fabulous.......2007-03-14
I love this book. I did a lot of research before purchasing several books for my neices and nephew after their grandpa died at age 62. It is a simple, well written and wonderful book for both children and adults to understand the cycle of life. I'm glad I chose this one.
Customer Reviews:
Not only helped my kid, but it helped the adults too!.......2006-10-27
This book was recommended by hospice to explain death to a grade school age child. It is so beautifully written, that it not only helped my 10 year old daughter (who lost two grandparents in 6 months time), but it helped me and my husband as well. This probably won't work for a really young child - like 2 or 3, but it is probably appropriate for age 6+. Death is such a hard thing to explain to a child (even adults can't understand it), but this book explains it as beautifully as possible.
To give you a summary of its main thought, life is compared to the seasons. We pass from summer to spring without fear, so why be frightened from the natural progression of fall to winter.

Thai Cooking Made Easy.......2007-01-24
I selected this booik after nearly 3 years of looking at Thai cookbooks. This is easy to use and takes the mystery and confusion out of preparing Thai food. I have given copies to several friends and family.
Good Thai cook book!.......2007-01-10
I use it all the time. It is great. Everything comes out
great. I would recommend this book to anyone!
I Own this book and I am a Thai cook !.......2006-03-20
This cookbook is okay for its nice pictures but is not one of
the best. It doesn't tell the real recipies--missing some ingredients in some recipies. I wish the owner of the Thai restaurant would give away the real recipies since he has been making lots of money from his business ( already! ).
I was diappointed to buy this book but I enjoyed looking at all the pictures in it. This book might be helpful for some beginners out there though.
the facts--
Most Thai restaurants don't wash the veggies because they're afraid they can't keep the veggies for long time.
They usually use MSG and usually tell their customers NO MSG added :)
They use fish sauce and oyster sauce and tell those vegans NO fish sauce NO oyster sauce. ( Impossible: All ready to cook sauces )
Some restaurants use Chicken broth instead of using MSG and will tell you NO MSG added. ( they use MSG anyway because is far cheaper!! )
Some of them hire illegal workers and they love to hide paying real taxes.
Do you think they change the cooking oil as often as they should have???? ( Usually....NO!! ) ( FOR DEEP-FRIED FOOD !! )
Peanuts, crushed peanut, dried chillies.....could cause Cancer because they don't know how to keep them right and they might keep them for too long. Some cooks left the lids open and never close them.....then the moister gets into those ingredients and cause ALFATOXIN!!!
Do you want to make peanut sauce????
One can of Mae-Ploy ( the best ) coconut milk
One pinch of salt
Half tablespoon of Red curry paste
Half tablespoon of Massaman curry paste
3-4 tablespoons of sugar or palm sugar
( depends on how sweet you like )
2 tablespoons of tammarind juice ( Por kwan brand )
Peanut butter ummm about less than 18 oz. you can try to put half of 18 oz. and stir it. If it's not thick enough then add a little more.
you should stir fried Massaman curry paste with red curry paste with a little veggie oil, then add coconut milk, and then the rest of the ingredients. Add peanut butter the last.
This is my home recipie which is different than my restaurant recipies.
FOR EASY STIR FRIED FOR ONE DISH....
1/2 tablespoon of oyster sauce
1/3 teaspoon of sugar
1/2 teaspoon of soy sauce
1/2 teaspoon Thai thin soy sauce ( SE EW KhaW )
1/4 teaspoon of ground pepper
some crushed garlic
1/2 teaspoon of chicken broth POWDER Knors
1 TEBLESPOON OF WATER
tHAI ice tea.....Thai tea ($2.99 a pack) and lots of sugar
yes you have to filter it too!!! Add half and half too.
Enjoy eating Thai food......it's good for you but you should learn to cook it at home ( you know for sure that it's clean and fresh!! )
Used by Thai Cook!!!.......2005-12-20
A friend of mine is married to a Thai. She gave me cooking lessons and actually uses this cookbook. When I asked her for a recommendation of a good book, this is the one she told me she uses all the time!
Oh, yeah! The food in here tastes great, too!
'nuff said for me!!!

Customer Reviews:
Thai cooking made easier, but not easy.......2006-05-13
I love cooking, and I love Thai food, but attempts to make my favorite dishes at home always seem to come up short. The flavors aren't quite right, it doesn't look the way it is supposed to, and all the recipes I try don't quite cut it.
Good, authentic Thai cooking is never really that easy, as evidenced by this book. "Thai Cooking Made Easy" does an admirable job making Thai cooking accessible. The directions are easy to follow, the spiral bound format is perfect for the kitchen,, and all of the recipes have great pictures to help you pick your challenge. But...
While it says "delectable Thai meals in minutes," almost every recipe has substantial prep time, with an hour being standard, and several being much longer. Possibly the biggest barricade is the ingredients required by the recipes. You will either need a specialty store, or else a truly excellent supermarket before you attempt these dishes. How many of you have roasted rice powder, galanga root, kaffir lime leaves, tamarind juice and roasted grated coconut in your pantries?
Attempts at shortcutting on ingredients or preparation account for the second-rate dishes that I have been eating. If you want that magical taste, you have to be prepared to work for it! "Thai Cooking Made Easy" is a great guide and a solid cookbook, but don't expect to be whipping up authentic Yum Pla Muk or Tom Som Pla in the same way you would dash off a grilled cheese sandwich.
Recipes That Work.......2005-07-16
I have only made 3 of the recipes from this cookbook, but those i made came out absolutely perfect. The "Thai sweet and Sour shrimp" recipe was the best sweet and sour dish I've ever tasted. I've already made this one a couple of times with other meats. The Fragrant Beef Panang Curry" was delicious. It was the first time I could get this dish to come out as good or better than in a restaurant. There isn't many recipes in this cookbook, but many of the classic Thai recipes can be found here. The author only gives the Thai names for some of the recipes, so if you have a favorite Thai dish and only know it's Thai name you may be out of luck. On the plus side every recipe has a good full page color photo, so you can shop for a dish by browsing through the recipes. The author does give a short introduction to Thai ingredients, but it is incomplete compared to other Thai cookbooks such as "Thai Home-Cooking from Kamolmal's Kitchen".

tasty Thai cooking made accessible for us lazy Americans.......1998-12-06
Thai food is my favorite, but most of it is impossible for Americans to make on anything like a regular basis because it uses ingredients unavailable in most of the United States. Surprisingly, Ms. Holzner manages to work around that problem very well in this book. SEVERAL recipes in here have become consistent family favorites -- and I'm usually surprised if I even get ONE good lasting recipe out of any cookbook. If this book ever comes back into print, snap up a copy, because you can't have mine!
