Book Description
In Cambridge in 1355, the colleges of the fledgling university are as much at odds with each other as they are with the ordinary townsfolk. This tension has recently been heightened by the return of two well-born murderers after receiving the King's pardon, showing no remorse but ready to confront those who helped convict them. And in the midst of this, Bartholomew the physician is called to the local mill to examine two corpses. It is almost a relief to be able to turn his back on the fractious town, but as always in Cambridge, everything is connected.

Just a Delight for the Reader.......2006-08-02
I know that historical fiction is not usually at the top of the best seller lists and I guess that it is not really a subject that appeals to the mainstream book reading public, but if ever an author deserved best sellers Susanna Gregory is certainly one of them.
She is not as prolific a writer as many of the authors who write this style of book and the anticipation of waiting for a new title can be quite frustrating for the reader. However the wait is always worthwhile.
I am not sure whether it is Matthew Bartholomew himself, or the setting of Cambridge in the mid-fourteenth century but Miss Gregory's books seem to carry an aura all of their own. Certainly for me and hopefully for other readers as well.
Cambridge 1355, the townspeople and the students of Cambridge are as always at one another's throats. Although the students bring status and wealth to the City the people of Cambridge still consider them louts and trouble makers.
The tension has increased with the return to the City of two well-born murderers. They have been released by none other than the King himself, after he deemed that a Royal pardon was appropriate. The pair are showing no remorse whatsoever and are more than ready to confront the citizens who helped in their conviction in the first place.
In the middle of all this Bartholomew is called to a local mill where two corpses have been found. Is there a connection between the bodies and the release of the murderers. Is anything that simple in 14th century Cambridge.
Another strong entry in this seires!.......2006-05-23
I am a huge fan of the Matthew Bartholomew series set in Cambridge, England in the mid 1300's. Ms. Gregory is an historian and she builds her books around true historical happenings and she includes real people in them. And there is always lots of suspense for the reader that seeks this in a medieval mystery. Ms. Gregory always uses particularly ruthless villains, and great numbers of people die before Matt and his wonderful friend Broither Michael can solve the mystery. These books are so authentic, and so much fun to read! This particular one illustrates the volatile nature of relations between "town" and "gown" in Cambridge. Another riot is never far away! I highly recommend this seires.
Another good one.......2006-02-25
I have always enjoyed the Matthew Bartholomew series and this one does not disappoint.
Another fine effort.......2004-07-08
Pseudonymal Susanna Gregory's tenth Matthew Bartholomew mystery is as brilliant as the previous nine. The mark of a good mystery author is the ability to confound the audience every time. The majority of authors, like any good crossword setter tends to evidence similar sleuthing patterns so familiarity leads to quick diagnosis from the reader. Not from Gregory whose mind manages to twist the reader deviously through the maze that is fourteenth century Cambridge with a verve that is truly remarkable.
The latest also introduces a new link as the prologue to the last effort which found Josse dead in a snow drift actually proves a key link to the mystery contained within this novel. Very neat. There is also continuity of mystery in the re-appearance of Rob Thorpe and Edward Mortimer, two ruffians who were the culprits in an even earlier novel and the influence of the Hand, that non-relic that Michael and Matt revealed as previously attached to the simpleton, Peterkin Starre in another novel. So, not just continuity of time and character, but also of mysteries. However, it does not mean you have to have read the previous novels but does add another touch of delight to those who have.
So...more murders...more mystery and lots of canonical and secular intrigue. The story opens with the drunken Thomas Mortimer (owner of the Mortimer Mill) killing Lenne and maiming Isnard. Swiftly followed by the deaths in the King's Mill of the Gonville scholar, Bottisham, and the wealthy grocer (and King's Mill patron) Deschalers who are located by Matt and Michael with nails driven through their palate and crushed in the water mill.
More characters come to Cambridge. The introduction of Gonville Hall allows a new physician, Rougham, its Master, Pulham, and several others. The return of Rob and Edward (who have received a King's Pardon for their crimes) to do mischief is tied into the feud between the Mortimer Mill which has turned its hand to fulling, and the King's Mill. The intercession of a King's Commission to rule on the two mills raises the Cambridge temperature considerably. On one side we have the Mortimer clan, legally represented by Gonville, on the other a merchant conglomerate comprising Mayor Morice, Cheney the spice merchant, Bernarde the Miller, Lavenham the apothecary (and his voluptuous wife, Isobel) and the dead Deschalers. Meanwhile, in Michaelhouse, three of Matt's students take more of a starring role, Redmeadow, Quenhyth and Denyman and the key cast list is rounded off with Master Warde of Valence Marie, the new physician Paxtone, Wynewyk, Tulyet and Tynkell (whose physiology proves a mystery in itself).
Three deaths are swiftly followed by the murder of Bosel the Beggar and the arrival of the addled Bess whom Matilde takes under her Frail Sisters wing. By the time Lavenham's workplace goes up in flames Gregory's death count hits twelve (via henbane most of the time as we eventually discover) as Warde, Bess, Lavenham, Isobel, Bernarde, Rob Thorpe, Edward Mortimer, Thomas Mortimer, Mistress Lenne (natural causes in a startling turn) all wind up dead.
During the book , Matt allows himself to get diverted by a brewing personal feud with Rougham, who is clearly imcompetent, who thinks Matt has a secretum secretorum - a panacea - and we get steered down the wrong path through Michael and Matt several times until one very bedraggled fake rat acts as Matt's epiphany. By the end we have our single culprit, discover the motives were all different and there was no conspiracy and Matt has a wealth of new books to keep him company whilst Michael continues to eat his way through Cambridge.
Gregory has added another fine achievement to her Chronicles and it is all the more remarkable as the majority of key players are based on historical reality. Her grasp of medieval Cambridge is excellent, the narrative is gripping, the plots endless but controlled and there is a vibrancy throughout that makes this series an absolute must read for any fan of the genre.
More needs to come from the pen of this fine author.

Book Description
In the suburban world of nice homes, neat lawns, and new cars, it can be easy to forget about social justice issues. Life keeps us busy, and the poor and disenfranchised of our world are invisible as we go from our garage to our workplace and back again. But suburbanites can be a force for social justice in the world. In this unique book, readers will take a journey with a young couple from the ’burbs as they learn to notice and act on the issues of justice that abound no matter where you live. This engaging narrative helps readers kiss apathy and ignorance goodbye in favor of a life of concern and action in order to help our fellow human beings.
Customer Reviews:
Highly recommended.......2007-10-10
This book is a careful examination of the part we choose to have in our local community. Many people go to work, get home, have dinner, go shoping and maybe attend church. They may give to charity, but most are isolated from their neighbors and others in the community that are in need. It's easy to write a check at church and think they've done their part in 'helping out'. Is that the way to practice what they believe? Is that enough, or are they missing out on something? This book examines a couple that take the next step. They start doing things to help out people in need, carefully and gradually, and they discuss how it affected them and the people around them. They also discuss suburban life and how it got to be the way it is now.
This book will likely make you examine your life, how you are living it, and consider some minor things you could change that could make a world of difference to people that need help.
A book of substance and authenticity.......2007-10-08
This is a great, multi-facted look at the dilemma suburbanites face when awakening to the fact that God may have a different dream than their culture's picture of the American dream. I was impressed by the different angles that the Samsons are willing to tackle in the book, and I particularly appreciated their broad, 'holistic' perspective that reminds readers to serve their own communities and not just see the "inner-city" people as the only people who need to be served. I also appreciated the emphasis on joining in with ministries already going on and being willing to learn from the people who have been in the trenches rather than starting something new. Too often I hear white people raving (with good intentions, of course) about how they're saving the world, wanting credit for everything they do. But the Samsons really stress the normality of this "new normal" life, and they certainly deserve credit for that in my book! Their humility and authenticity really impressed me.
The fictional account of a suburban family on their journey is really well-written and evocative...very effective. However, there were a few places that were so cheesy and white-man's burden-sounding (particularly the last page) that I just groaned. But the great good in this book far outweighs any of that, and I can see it changing lives...I hope many people will listen to their voices and be moved to think through the hard questions along with those like the Samsons who have already traveled this path.
hope for suburban christians.......2007-08-28
As a suburbanite who is deeply concerned about social justice, I often felt like a walking oxymoron. Or sometimes, just a moron. In the last year, I've taken a class on urban ministry and racial reconciliation, I've started volunteering at a homeless shelter in a rough neighborhood in the city. I've been wrestling with what it means to "act justly and love mercy." But I felt conflicted when I returned home to my quiet, safe suburban neighborhood. This book offered both healing encouragement and a kick in the behind, and I needed both. It offered hope and insight on how to, as the subtitle says, "be the hands of Jesus wherever you live." In the suburbs, knowing your neighbors' names is counter-cultural. I realized that I not only know my neighbors, I know their families, the details of their lives. I pray for them, specifically. This book challenged me to continue that, in fact, to be more intentional about showing God's love to my neighbors, but also to realize that people in the inner city and all over the world are my neighbors as well. I highly recommend it.
In My Face.......2007-08-07
Justice in the Burbs is in my face. As if knowing Will & Lisa and the entire Samson clan wasn't in my face enough they brought this book out. The Samsons are both prophets and practitioners of the part of the Gospel that I would just as soon be left out - the part where we're supposed to live out Micah 6:8. This book doesn't call on us to make sacrifices that we can't handle - instead we're challenged to live justly on the block or up the holler where God's placed us. Read this book knowing you're risking your comfortable life in your cookie-cutter house. Read it knowing you're risking your cookie-cutter faith.

Nothing Like This.......2004-11-12
This well written novel is the best thriller I have read in years. It captures the heart of the Bay Area and the characters jump off the pages. If you read only one book this year, this should be it.
Bob Warford KSCO Radio.......2004-11-12
Richard Marsh has woven a brilliant piece with an intelligent story and believable. vivid characters. I was spellbound. Today's batch of writers who haven't been there could learn a thing or two from this writing master. Life's experiences and clever five of a kind story twists always beat a full house of cards. Cheers to Marsh for this well written and soon to be standard for excellence.
Hand of Justice.......2004-06-19
I think my favorite Charater was Nick Spear... I think his Character was the best developed throughout. Easist for me to follow. I also loved to hate Eva but wanted more on her evilness. My favorite good guy was John Shepard... Very believable.
The first part of the book seemed like a bunch of unrelated short stories. Each one was really good and had lots of suspense but I was dying to see how it all tied in and that didn't happen until I was half way through the book. I got a little frustrated.
I wished the whole conspiracy and deaths would have been longer. It just seemed like it all happened so fast at the end and then it was over.
I loved the way everybody died and the good guys in the book were allowed to remain good guys. Nobody "really" killed anybody. At least not the five good guys. Pretty cool and very creative.
Hands of Justice.......2004-01-18
We met the author, Richard Marsh, at the Kitty Hawk 100th Anniversary Flight Celebration in Dec 03. My wife is an avid reader of adventure/mystery/murder novels. Richard gave us a copy of his book in exchange for a copy of my book, The Man Who Flew the Memphis Belle. Linda loved Richard's book. She stayed up all night reading it. Her report is the characters are so fleshed out they feel like someone she knew. The plot was twisted, spun together with an almost impossible plot that pulled together in the finale.
She's waiting for Richard's next book.

Great book. I happened to be in San Francisco on a business trip when I read it. The settings are very real, and the complexity and intrigue in the book made me read it straight through. I'd wholeheartedly agree that this book could be tunred into a great movie. How about a screenplay, Mr. Marsh?

A fun and exciting superhero book!.......2006-09-28
I love the old time Spider-man shows and these Adam Troy Castro books bring out all the fun memories of wathing the old cartoons and reading the comic books.
The title of the book is a little misleading, 90% of the book is about Mysterio and 10% is about the Gathering. Regardless of that it really is a great book. Plenty of action, plenty of plot and just a lot of fun to read. Mysterio is a very intriging and interesting villian. It was great to learn more about him. I think they could do a lot with him if they ever made a Spider-man movie with him as the main or at least one of the main villians.
The only negative thing about this book is finding it. It's out of print... none of the libraries in my city (Salt Lake) had a copy. So I had to fork out $25 to buy a slightly used copy on Amazon. It was worth the price of admission.
Enjoy!
Adam-Troy Castro writes a GREAT Spider-Man story.......2006-03-26
What an enjoyable read. Great story. Exciting.
I really enjoyed the descriptions and development of the characters. The Gentleman was someone to be feared and hated after just a couple of pages. He was chilling. But, I especially appreciated the authors treatment of Mary Jane, and the relationship between her and Peter. Her character really came to life here...
Can't wait to start the next in the trilogy.
really good.......2004-06-22
I'm glad i managed to find a copy for under $20, it's going for around $100 now. I read the other two and then spent a year trying to get this first one. It was well worth the wait, though i'm not sure if it was the best of the trilogy.
An Excellent Book.......2004-04-19
This book written by Adam-Troy Castro is a very good read and the beginning of the exceptional Sinister Six trilogy. The only gripe I have with his book is that it really only deals with Mysterio as he wreaks havoc to many. The actual "Gathering of the Sinister Six"(done by the Chameleon) is a very small part of the book. This book should've atleast been given a subtitle relating to Mysterio. Other than that, it's an exciting piece of Marvel fiction that will likely entertaining to even those who aren't too enthusiastic about Marvel heroes.
Probably the Best Spider-Man Novel I've Read.......2003-02-12
I'm going to keep this short and simple: Though this book is HARD AS ANYTHING to find, it is the best of this entire companies' run of novels related to MArvel characters. I have indeed read them all, and reccomend this one above the rest (as well as it's two other parts).

Book Description
For some people, depression has been a part of their experience for so long that they've begun to believe it's what they are. They become experts at "doing" depression--hiding it, working around it, even achieving great things (but at the price of great struggle, and little satisfaction). In this book, psychotherapist Richard O'Conner shows us how to "undo" depression, by replacing depressive patterns of thinking, relating, and behaving with a new and more effective set of skills. With a truly holistic approach that synthesizes the best of the many schools of thought about this painful disease, O'Conner offers new hope--and new life--for depressives.
Customer Reviews:
Helped me understand I wasn't alone.......2007-09-09
I recently pulled this book off my shelf to give it to someone close suffering their own depression. I read it - and many more books - years ago when tackling my own illness. Paging through and seeing all the underlines and dog-eared pages, I recalled how this one book along with group therapy is what helped me pull though. I could identify so much with what I read and was re-assured that I wasn't alone in feeling those thoughts. This book is not full of self-help exercises as the genre tends to be - frankly, I wouldn't have had the energy at that time to do them and would have felt discouraged by my failure to do so. Reading it was like having a therapist available at any time of day to reassure me that it was going to be okay.
Very informative book, but one major flaw.......2007-04-10
I have lived with a very deep depression for 15 years, slowly making progress back to my happier self. My mother purchased this book during one of my hospitalizations, and I read it thoroughly, highlighting throughout. The spotlight reviewer describes its contents very well. The only thing I want to add is how dismayed I felt when the author wrote off suicide as "stupid and selfish." This says to me that the author has never been through crippling depression himself. And I certainly hope he never utters such a thing to his patients! Telling someone they're being selfish for having attempted suicide or thinking about suicide does nothing for them, but only boosts your own ego. Not to mention it's incredibly selfish on your own part. (I challenge anyone to show me someone who isn't selfish by nature.) Besides, when a person gets so bad that they're willing to kill themselves to kill the pain, no, they're not thinking about you. If I were to bore a drill into your skull, would you be concerned about someone else across the room? I highly doubt it. Would you be selfish for wanting to escape your pain? If the same logic applies, then yes. Would you be stupid? Apparently so. Instead of writing off suicides as selfish, why not step out of your own selfish shoes and try to help them?
Great Resource for Depression.......2006-10-07
I have referred all of my depresssed cleints to this book. It is a broad-based approach to contending with depression, and is eminantly usable. O'Conner takes a commen sense approach to a debilitating process, and in doing so, exhibits uncommon intelligence in offering a wide variety of approaches to dealing with depression, which is notoriously difficult to treat and requires a multi-headed approach for best results. No one school is best, and clients benefit from a multitude of suggestions founds in this book.
It was okay.......2006-05-13
Perhaps if this is the first book you pick up on the subject, you will find it helpful. I had been through many prior to reading this one and didn't learn anything new, nor did I feel it was necessary to keep on hand for future reference. I ended up donating it to my local library in the hopes someone else will benefit.
As an earlier reviewer stated, you cannot underestimate the effectiveness of one-on-one therapy. This in conjunction with books a trusted therapist recommends would probably be most helpful. Much luck in your search for relief and happiness! :o)
This Book saved my life!.......2006-04-03
This is the most informative, easy to understand book about Depression I ever read.
Suffering from this illness is hard enough. This book makes learning the facts about the disease and how to help yourself recover so easy. It's my bible! -J

Book Description
In this groundbreaking book, psychotherapist Richard O'Connor explains how a wide range of ever-more-common problems-both emotional and physical-are in fact side effects of 21st-century life. When our fight-or-flight response is stuck in the "on" position, the over-stimulation and complex demands of the modern world can have severe long-term effects on health and well-being, sometimes in ways people don't even recognize until it's too late.
Combining expert authority with down-to-earth language, Undoing Perpetual Stress reveals how to put an end to this mode of existence, replacing anxious responses with a new and more effective set of skills. Readers will learn how to:
- Regain a measure of control over their environments
- Cope with stressors calmly and constructively
- Make health and happiness a daily priority

Very insightful.......2007-01-06
Well worth reading if you suffer from chronic, generalized anxiety. While this book is not a substitute for professional help, it certainly gives suffers of anxiety and depression an excellent insight into the many causes of these disorders and offers ways to temper the effects of these afflictions. I would say this book is a very good adjunct to individual or group therapy.
Excellent, comprehensive, a winner.......2007-01-04
This book has been a godsend to me. The author describes & discusses so many aspects of stress, and why we are so stressed-out in the early 21st century. The volume is densely packed with information, & I find that it helps me to link up my expectations of life, with the realities of limits, relationships, physical and emotional care, and the kinds of situations that help anyone to be healthy - or perpetually stressed. I am not done with this book yet; I want to savor & absorb all that it has to offer. I highly recommend it to you. It's a great read and a wonderful ongoing reference book. You will be glad to have bought it.
Great info buried in to many unnecessary pages.......2006-09-18
At 459 mind numbing pages I would suggest saving yourself about 15 hours of reading time and pick up "Stress free for good" by Luskin and Pelletier, both books have the same goal to reduce your perpetual stress mode, both authors have the same basic credentials however this book (Undoing perpetual stress) goes on and on about the author, his last book, his theories about stress, and all his opinions. "Stress free for good" gives you quick principle to use now. Buy this book if you find stress incredible fascinating and would like to study it for 15 hours. The book is sound scientifically and has a lot of great points, but who has time to read a big scientific book when you are looking for relief from stress now? This book stressed me out.
A masterpiece.......2006-07-19
If you are prepared to give up suffering in the modern world, read and digest this classic guidebook. It will help you learn about your own mind and emotions and how to make yourself stronger through insight.
Mindfulness helpful for Non-Specific Illness.......2005-09-17
I've just finished reading a copy of this book that I had checked out from the library. I found that I would want to read certain parts again, particularly the mindfulness exercises. So I ordered a copy for my library. As a person who has been diagnosed some time ago with Fibromyalgia Syndrome, one of the Non-Specific Illnesses referred to in the book, I was especially interested in the Biopyschosocial view which I believe this author represents. I have been dissatisfied with my medical diagnosis and the lack of treatments when the condition is considered strictly medical. I have been ready to accept/integrate a mind/body model of this condition and for most of the book I was willing to accept this model. I take issue with some of Mr. O'Connors assertions that "most" people with non-specific illnesses have a history of anxiety or depression. He may have cited studies, but I did not see the footnotes. And he states unequivocally that these non-specific illnesses "ARE NOT MEDICAL ILLNESSES". This statement somehow seems at odds with the acceptance throughout the book of the reality of the physical symptoms and the fact that the brain is a part of the physical body. Even mainstream research now acknowledges that Fibromyalgia is the result of disordered brain chemistry. While his intentions are undoubted noble, wanting people to get over the idea that there is a simple explanation or cure for non-specific disorders, this assertion undoes much of the persuading of the earlier parts of the book. If the mind affects the body, and the body affects the mind and both affect the brain, then why be so strident on this point? I am going to start to practice mindfulness as a part of my life, along with considering cognitive/behavioral therapy. I don't believe (any longer) in quick cures. But a multi-disiplinary approach is for me, and I am not dismissing my physician's advice for a strictly mindfulness approach.

Book Description
SICILIAN FEASTS was born out of the author's love for her native Sicily. She shares the history, customs, and folklore, as well as the flavorful and varied cuisine of her beautiful Mediterranean island in recipes, stories, and anecdotes.
SICILIAN FEASTS offers more than 160 recipes, along with menus for holidays, notes on ingredients, list of suppliers, an introduction to the Sicilian language, and a glossary of food terms in Sicilian, Italian, and English. Illustrations demonstrate special techniques.
Giovanna Bellia La Marca uses simple methods and readily available ingredients to teach the straightforward and delectable everyday cooking of Sicily, thus allowing even novices to create feasts in their kitchens. She features examples of elaborate dishes created by the monzu', a class of eighteenth- and nineteenth-century professional cooks. These dishes are now effortlessly recreated with modern appliances. The astonishing 'Mpanata, a lamb pie from Ragusa, is sure to please one's most exacting guests. La Marca also introduces her readers to the practice of transforming almond paste into beautiful and realistic marzipan fruits, a traditional Sicilian art form.

A great taste of Sicily.......2006-08-23
I bought this book a few years ago and have used it more often with each passing year. There's nothing like learning Sicilian cooking from someone who knows it so well. Giovanna Bellia La Marca's photos of Sicily and brief narratives about her family are an interesting addition to this book. If you want a healthful, truly Italian tasting sweet dish, try the recipe for sweetened wheat berries (Cuccia ri Santa Lucia). I make them all the time. This book is great for everyday meals, as well as holiday/party fare. The author includes Feast Day Menus in the back of the book, as well as a helpful appendix indicating where to buy authentic Italian cooking equipment and ingredients.
In the Best Sicilian Tradition.......2004-11-14
Sicilian Feasts is written just the way my mother and scores of my friends moms cooked (I obviously lived in an Italian neighborhood!) using simple fresh ingredients that are readily found in the home and garden. If you're into "supped up" complex recipes, then this book is not for you. If you're interested in real home Sicilian cooking then this is the book to buy. It's one of the most genuine Sicilian cookbooks I've seen. Buon lavoro Giovanna!!!
