Thriller readers can always count on getting extra value from Jeffery Deaver--strong plots, fascinating research, believable characters, and plenty of surprise endings. Like in The Terminator, the bad guys in The Devil's Teardrop just won't quit, and they create enough havoc in the last 50 pages to fill a whole new book.

Although Deaver's brilliant, wheelchair-bound forensic expert Lincoln Rhyme makes a guest appearance, the muscular scientist in charge here is Parker Kincaid--an expert in document analysis who'd much rather be checking the authenticity of letters from Thomas Jefferson than figuring out when a crazed shooter known as the Digger will strike again. But it's New Year's Eve, 1999, and the Digger has begun a reign of terror--promising to shoot into crowds in Washington, D.C., every four hours until he's paid $20 million. As Kincaid searches an odd ransom note for clues (and tries to maintain a low profile so that his vindictive ex-wife won't get custody of his young kids), we get to know the Digger better. He is a frighteningly invisible character with serious brain damage, who methodically obeys a set of instructions from an unknown handler. We also learn many amazing facts about paper, ink, and handwriting analysis, and watch as a relationship slowly and reluctantly develops between Kincaid and the FBI agent in charge. All this as the devious Deaver leads us down several garden paths overflowing with dead bodies. --Dick Adler

Book Description

It's New Year's Eve, December 31, 1999, and Washington, D.C., is under siege. Early in the day, a grisly machine gun attack in the Dupont Circle Metro station leaves dozens dead and the city crippled with fear. A note delivered to the mayor's office pins the massacre on the Digger, a robotlike assassin programmed to wreak havoc on the capital every four hours -- until midnight. Only a ransom of $20 million delivered to the Digger's accomplice -- and mastermind -- will end the death and terror. But the Digger becomes a far more sinister threat when his accomplice is killed in a freak accident while en route to the money drop. With the ransom note as the single scrap of evidence, Special Agent Margaret Lukas calls upon Parker Kincaid, a retired FBI agent and the top forensic document examiner in the country. Somehow, by midnight, they must find the Digger -- before he finds them.

In The Devil's Teardrop, Jeffery Deaver delivers the same intricate forensic detail, masterful plot twists and harrowing breakneck pace that made A Maiden's Grave, The Bone Collector and The Coffin Dancer national bestsellers. The Devil's Teardrop is destined to continue Jeffery Deaver's bestselling track record and thrill his legions of fans worldwide.

5 out of 5 stars Extortion plot that could lead to numerous rampages.......2007-09-01

A criminal mastermind is plotting an extortion scheme against the city of Washington, threatening massacres at four hour intervals if 20 million dollars is not paid by noon that day.

The day is New Year's Eve, 1999, and someone is terrorizing Washington D.C., which leads the FBI to turn to Parker Kincaid, who had retired after an ugly incident a couple of years earlier which had endangered his children's lives.

With his expertise as a certified document examiner, they unravel the spellbinding mystery.

Parker is very likeable as a single father, which makes this story all the more enjoyable.

5 out of 5 stars Deaver at his meticulous and macabre best.......2007-06-13

The devil is in the details, they say - and that's always been one of Jeffrey Deaver's strengths: the ability to take well-worn story-lines yet make them refreshingly exciting by going into meticulous detail with regard to characterisation and modus operandi. I have about a dozen Deaver novels, only three-quarters have been read so far but The Devils's Teardrop is as good as any if not the best. The semi-automaton in this novel, known as The Digger, is quite a scary individual and absolutely devoid of remorse. Someone has 'programmed' him however, and that's where the main challenge lies. While the central character here is good-guy Parker Kincaid, the author is confident enough to introduce none other than Lincoln Rhyme in a cameo appearance! It's bordering upon arrogance but he gets away with it.

If you have yet to buy a Deaver novel, here is as good a place as any to start and you will surely want to join the club. And if you're a Deaver reader already, then buy The Devil's Teardrop with absolute confidence, it will maintain or even raise the standards you have become familiar with. Jeffrey Deaver is one of a very select group of contemporary writers I can think of who make it a safe bet to buy everything they publish - he just doesn't write duds.

3 out of 5 stars Madness in D. C. Transit.......2005-11-01

Gilbert Havel, a blackmailer, is the only person who can communicate with Digger, an invisible character with brain damage, which left him a 'half-human killing machine.' Already he'd carried out the massacre in the Dupont Circle Metro tunnel at midnight and had three other explosions to set off if Mayor Gerald Kennedy did not pay the ransom demanded.

Digger is an emotionless, robot-like madman who doesn't know not to follow through on the death job his 'handler' arranged. Havel is killed in a freak accident, but Digger is like a skinny ape man on Halloween, only this is New Year's Eve. He is unseen by those he's been programed into 'making ghosts.'

It is a tense, suspenseful thriller as they try to discover where he will strike next. Jeffery Deaver has written his major success, THE BONE COLLECTOR, NOCTURE, and THE LESSON OF HER DEATH.

4 out of 5 stars An amazing book.......2005-06-30

Deaver really makes the reader stay interested in "The Devil's Teardrop". I found it arduous to put down. The serial killer, "The Digger" knew how to remain unseen. Leaving only a note for the FBI, their only clue, they call upon the help of Parker Kincaid.

4 out of 5 stars A riveting psychological drama!.......2005-06-11

It's New Year's Eve 1999! A fixated killer, known only as "Digger", walks into Washington DC's Metro Station at 9:00 a.m. and empties a silenced Uzi on full automatic into the crowd on a brutal killing spree. The FBI receives a ransom note demanding a $20 million dollar payoff with curt instructions that unless the payment happens without a hitch, the "Digger" will repeat the mass murder at 4:00 p.m., at 8:00 p.m. and again at 12:00 midnight during the height of the New Year's Eve celebrations. Parker Kincaid, a former FBI agent and top flight forensic document examiner, is asked to return to active duty as a consultant to assist Margaret Lukas, special agent in charge of the task force put together to round up the mastermind and his automaton killer before the carnage is repeated. Given the intensely compressed time frames and enormous potential for death involved, Gerald Kennedy, DC's mayor, agrees to the payment demand and the FBI puts a plan in place to track the murderer and his "control" after the ransom is collected. The whole affair comes off the rails when the extortionist is killed in a hit-and-run car accident on the way to the drop. It now appears nobody knows how to contact "Digger" to stop the next three scheduled killing fairs!

The reading is intense and compelling. The excitement builds from the very first page until a breathless climax with two incredible twists that will leave every reader sitting on the edge of their chairs.

Despite the fact that the entire book takes place in less than a one day time frame, the action in this thriller is surprisingly low key and evenly paced. Deaver's success with this novel rests more on the psychological components of the drama - examination of the realistic issue of whether a city should succumb to payment of extortion demands to terrorists and criminals; the fascinating minutiae of forensic investigation of evidence, in particular, the ransom note; the validity of profiling on the basis of criminal conduct and physical evidence such as handwriting; the political maneuvering of governments and the balance of rivalry and cooperation between police agencies during a crisis; and, both the synergy and conflict of multiple brains at work in the environment of a task force assigned to a criminal investigation.

But the climax does arrive, of course, and, when it does, the action switches gears and becomes intense and frenetic. Despite a double surprise ending that has somewhat of a Hollywood over the top flair to it that stretches the credibility factor somewhat, any thriller fan will be left feeling they've got their money's worth! An enjoyable read, a worthy addition to Deaver's extraordinary body of work, and an easy book to recommend to those that enjoy the thriller genre.

John Pellam, scouting locations for a new film in a small town in Missouri, inadvertently witnesses a double homicide and some serious gunplay that left a cop paralyzed. He didn't see the guy who ordered the killings, but the police don't believe him. The U.S. attorney who thinks he knows who was behind the murders has bet his career on Pellam's identification of a criminal the feds have been trying to nail for years. They'll do anything to get Pellam's cooperation, including threatening his new girlfriend, shutting down the movie, and keeping Pellam from inking a deal to get his own film made. That project is Pellam's ticket back to the top of the heap in Hollywood, a perch he fell off of when he supplied the drugs that killed his best friend. The cops want Pellam's testimony, the mob boss wants him permanently silenced, and the film's director wants him to finish the job he's been paid to do. But first Pellam has to find his way out of the traps they've all set for him, and he does it with style, wit, and a self-deprecating charm that makes him a hero to everyone--well, almost everyone. William Jefferies, who usually writes under the better-known nom de plume of Jeffery Deaver, has a couple of other Location Scout mysteries to his name (Shallow Graves, Hell's Kitchen). Pocket Books has reissued them as Deaver titles ("writing as William Jefferies"), but regardless of their provenance, they feature topnotch writing, snappy dialogue, solid pacing, and excellent characterization. Bloody River Blues was overlooked by Deaver's fans when it first came out eight years ago. Now that the publisher has cleared up the mystery of who actually wrote it, it ought to get the attention it deserves. --Jane Adams

        5 out of 5 stars MILLENNIUM MADNESS..........2005-07-30

Author Jeffrey Deaver does it again! This is an immensely entertaining, page turning read for all thriller enthusiasts. The story line centers around an unknown killer unleashed upon Washington, D.C.. Known as the "Digger", this maniacal killer proceeds into D.C.'s Metro Station at 9:00 AM on New Year's Eve 1999 and begins a shooting spree that leaves many dead. The Digger has been instructed by an unknown criminal mastermind accomplice to kill hordes of people at clocked intervals on the eve of the millennium, unless a twenty million dollar demand for ransom is met. The ransom note is the only communication from this criminal genius who alone can control the actions of the killer. D.C.'s mayor agrees to pay the staggering ransom, but on the way to the drop, the accomplice appears to have been killed in a freak traffic accident. Who can now stop the "Digger" from his appointed rounds?

Enter Parker Kincaid, document examiner extraordinaire and former FBI agent. Kincaid has been called back as a consultant to assist the FBI who need to stop the killer before he kills again. Kincaid is a wonderful, fully fleshed character. A single parent with his own share of troubles, he is as interesting as is Lincoln Rhyme, another of Deaver's characters around whom several of his books have revolved. Interestingly enough, Rhyme has a cameo appearance in this book which should give Deaver's fans an added kick while reading this book. Like Rhyme, Kincaid is a master of deductive reasoning and is a thinking person's detective. It is interesting how his analysis of the ransom note provides clues for the FBI to follow up in their quest to stop the killer before it is too late.

The book is filled with numerous plot twists and turns, which should provide even the most jaded devotees of thrillers with a satisfying read. This action packed book keeps the reader guessing. Just when you think it's all over, you are yet once again surprised. The only criticism is that the end of the book strains the imagination. It almost borders on the absurd. Yet such is Deaver's writing that this does not impact unduly on the absolute enjoyment one will get from reading this book. It is a riveting read!

5 out of 5 stars This Series Just Keeps Getting Better.......2002-05-05

I came to this series via the Jim Butcher-Laurell K. Hamilton route. If you like those authors, or like supernatural/paranormal aspects to your mysteries, then you'll enjoy this series. This particular story is the fourth in the series, and I would recommend reading the series from the beginning. There is a secondary story arc (concerning a long-missing wealthy man's daughter, a woman in a catatonic state, and an apparent assasination plot) that is continuing throughout the series, and while each book can stand alone since the previous book's plot developments are summarized at the beginning of each new one, I think that you get a better feel for what Black Oak is and who the main characters are by reading it from the beginning. Of course, having said that, know that the first book is now listed as out-of-print, but I recently found it in a major-chain bookstore, so copies are out there.

Black Oak is a security investigation firm headed by Ethan Proctor. The firm investigates standard business scams, but Proctor also takes on special cases, scams that seem to involve some sort of supernatural aspect that he tries to debunk. As this particular story begins, Proctor is burned out and his firm has lost it's most lucrative client. He is coerced by his concerned employees into taking a short vacation in Atlantic City, just to regain his focus. Of course, his visit to AC also coincides with a series of horrible mutilation murders that are occuring in the city, and to top it off a strong winter storm is about to hit the city. If you don't already know it, Atlantic City is on a barrier island alongside the NJ mainland, and when there is excess rainfall the roads flood out and cut the city off. Guess what happens when the rain starts to fall in this book?

Proctor and his two employees, Taz and Doc, are unwillingly drawn into the investigation of the murders, and it soon becomes apparent that the killer is not an ordinary being. This book reintroduces a character who intially appeared in the first book and hopefully will continue to appear in the series. This book is a great mixture of police/PI procedural and horror. If you like your mysteries with a supernatural twist, then you'll enjoy this series.

                5 out of 5 stars A brooding, nightmarish chiller!.......2002-03-23

This is the best of the Black Oak series so far. A vacation turns into a nightmare for Ethan Proctor and his co-workers. During a cold, dark, and stormy visit to the Atlantic City boardwalk, a chilling (not only weather related) series of events begin to unfold. This book had me totally spellbound from beginning to end. The characters work well together and the addition of a new character was a real plus. I felt the fear of the victims down to my toes. And wanted to see the nemisis, shall we say neutralized, as badly as the characters. A good read indeed!

5 out of 5 stars Vacation proves more work than fun for Ethan Proctor........2001-04-17

After the disastrous events in 'Episode' 3: Winter Knight the now unemployed Ethan Proctor is forced into taking a vacation by his miserable coworkers. Sadly something very strange and nasty is waiting for him in Atlantic City. Is this serial killer simply a cannibalistic Jack the Ripper, or is he something else, something worse?

Grant's series really hits a comfortable stride in this outting. The story is rock solid and the characters fit together nicely and work as a real team, not just people working at the same job. Hunting Ground can also stand alone, the missing girl story arc is set aside (but not forgotten in the least) in favor of explorig the Dark Forces conspiracy and that makes the book even that more refreshing. There are more than a few subtle hints and clues that nastier things are in store for both Ethan and his Black Oak company. I also hope that Grant brings back one particular character for a second go around (you'll know who I mean after reading the book, no spoilers here). Highly recommended.

4 out of 5 stars See no evil, speak no evil.......2000-08-29

I am a big fan of Charles Grant. I cannot think of anything I've read by him that I haven't liked. HUNTING GROUND fits well into that reading tradition. I love this Black Oak series; it's creepy, it's fun, it has all the elements of great suspense. Grant's writing, as usual, is superb, and I enjoy getting to know the characters a little more with each addition to the series.

Proctor is the dark, moody leader of Black Oak Security. He has experienced a lot of weird things in his life, and this only continues as each of the agency's cases gets more and more bizarre. Even moodier than usual, Proctor mopes around his employees who then decide that the boss needs to take a vacation. What better way to forget your troubles than a jaunt in Atlantic City? Proctor, Doc and Taz arrive at a boardwalk casino just in time for two things: a heavy, raging winter storm that traps everyone in their hotels and The Ripper who (or what?) is picking off tourists and locals one by one in a most unpleasant manner. Of course Proctor gets caught up in the investigation; it even breathes a little life into him. Along the way, he meets up with Petra, a mysterious character who may or may not be human. The body count rises, the suspense holds, and Proctor finds more and more clues that the cases he investigates may be part of an overall plan to eliminate him. The question is: who wants him out of the picture?

This series is fun reading. The books remind me of the wonderful old cliffhangers; I devour one only to wait impatiently for the next to hit the shelves! I can't wait to read on and find out how the conspiracy surrounding Proctor and his agency unfolds. I highly recommend this series!

3 out of 5 stars Too many ancillory characters.......2000-06-26

The Black Oak series is arguably the best thing going in the Sci-Fi/Horror genre. Charles Grant, while he's not on the same level as the genre's leading man, Peter Straub, whose complexity and style is second-to-none, is one of the most overlooked writers on the market.

Grant has undertaken SEVERAL serial novel endeavors, some under his pen names Lionel Fenn and Geoffrey Marsh (good luck finding them, though. Those books are long out of print). But Black Oak has been mucho fun since its launch two summers ago.

The first two installments were worthy, but last fall's "Winter Knight" (#3) was clearly the most exhilirating.

The Black Oak series, though, is about Ethan Proctor, and Grant spends too much time on secondary characters in "Hunting Ground."

Proctor is no Dupin, but he is the heart of the chronicle.

Hopefully Grant begins to tie all this together, as "Hunting Ground" is the 4th installment in the series.

this book has proven to be an excellent resource for family members and co-workers who have expressed some frustrations in their relationships with individuals with BPD. it provides helpful background information to help people understand the problem and conceptualize it. it provides realistic exercises and suggested approaches that usually seem to be very helpful in relating with individuals with BPD. if one book to provide, i prefer this book over the other eggshell book in that it is better received, more understandable, and more useful. some patients' loved ones take it and hide it for a while as they begin reading it. almost all find that eventually it is most effective when there is real cooperation between partners on learning new, more effective ways of relating. i've given out at least one dozen copies of this book and it is very popular. i believe it is well worth the price, new, given the tools and hope that it can provide.

                Book Description

What to do with a basketful of luscious tomatoes? How to prepare an armload of summer squash? Where to turn for new sweet corn preparations? These are the questions vegetable-lovers grapple with as they pick fresh-from-the-garden produce in their own backyards or from the ever-expanding farmers’ markets. Garden-fresh vegetables are so beautiful, yet their freshness so fleeting.

Andrea Chesman is a cook and gardener who knows what it’s like to be staring down pounds of vegetables and panicking about how to use them all before it’s too late. Simple. Delicious. Planned to fit the season. That’s the approach Chesman brings to the 175 recipes she’s developed for The Garden-Fresh Vegetable Cookbook.

The vegetables are organized seasonally by crop-readiness, with attention paid to combining vegetables that ripen together. All the favorites — spring salad greens, asparagus, broccoli, carrots, peas, potatoes, and more — are included, along with the more unusual — artichokes, endive, rutabagas, and edamame, to name a few. Popular techniques such as roasting and grilling accentuate the flavor in recipes such as Grilled Chicken and Asparagus Salad, Soy- Sesame Grilled Eggplant, and Maple Roasted Carrots. There are many vegetarian options, but even when combined with meat, vegetables get top billing. From Egg Rolls to Borscht, Caponata to Sweet Potato Pie, The Garden-Fresh Vegetable Cookbook has dishes destined to please every palate.

To address those nights when the mounds of vegetables are just too overwhelming to try a whole new recipe, Chesman includes fourteen master recipes for simple preparation techniques that can accommodate whatever is in the vegetable basket. Readers need only to learn the basics of preparing a creamy quiche, a bubbly gratin, a basic stir-fry, or a zesty lo mein, and then it’s easy to create new meals every month around the freshest assortments of seasonal vegetables.

                The Garden-Fresh Vegetable Cookbook
is sure to become a favorite for everyone who wants to enjoy their vegetables fresh, local, seasonal, and simple.

Excellent cookbook that goes month-by-month for what's ready in the garden. Also gives a short guide at the beginning of each chapter on how to grow a particular vegetable along with a little history and helpful tips. A lovely book to read as well as to cook from.

Any who have a summer garden know the routine: it's feast and then sudden famine when everything ripens at once, and too often vegetable cookbooks hold the same types of dishes. If you have garden bounty and are seeking something fresh and new - something which embraces ethnic flavors and different seasoning combinations - then THE GARDEN-FRESH VEGETABLE COOKBOOK is for you. No, it doesn't hold the spicy color photos of less comprehensive guides: it focuses on the recipes which are easy enough not to need color embellishment. Try Chicken and Broccoli in Mornay Sauce, 'Zapple Pie' made with summer squash, or Eggplant Pizza. Dishes are accompanied by sidebars of information and gardening tips, from discussions different cultivars and historical insights to the evolution of plant names. A seasonal arrangement assures an easy, solid reference.

Contains some fun recipes. Even more, the tidbits of information about the individual vegetables are much appreciated and enjoyed. I love to garden, and this book will help me not only enjoy what I grow but it also will help me expand what I grow.

Author of more than a dozen cookbooks, Chesman describes herself as "a cook who gardens" rather than "a gardener who cooks," but her latest title will interest anyone who likes vegetables, whether from the backyard, the farmers market, or the supermarket. She organizes her recipes by season, from spring's first asparagus through tomatoes, "the star of summer," to winter squash and pumpkins; each chapter opens with information on growing, cooking, nutrition, and other useful facts. She also includes "Master Formulas," recipes that can be varied according to the vegetables in season.

                5 out of 5 stars Refreshing..........2005-07-19

I've only tried one recipe so far. However, I opened the book last night in the kitchen and was still reading it an hour later. The book is crammed with useful information on the life and times of veggies. The recipes are clear, concise and appealing.
