Book Description

Meredith Mitchell is delighted when an old friend from her consular days, Toby Smythe, turns up on leave between foreign postings. But Toby has a problem---or rather his relative Alison Jenner has---and Toby wants to enlist the help of Meredith's fiancé, Detective Superintendent Alan Markby. Alison has been receiving anonymous hate mail in which reference is made to a time twenty-five years earlier when she stood trial for the murder of her aunt, Freda Kemp, but was acquitted. Who is the writer, and how does he or she know about this secret in Alison's past?

Markby is reluctant to become involved, not least because Toby is hardly his favorite person. Besides, he and Meredith are planning their wedding, and distractions aren't welcome. But inquiries into a poisoned pen campaign soon turn into a murder investigation.

With the help of Inspector Jessica Campbell, a new member of Markby's team, and the non-professional but enthusiastic assistance of Meredith and Toby, the inquiry unravels a twenty-five-year-old mystery and its dreadful legacy of violence.

4 out of 5 stars Looking for a solid mystery with really good characters, pick this one up!.......2007-03-20

The most interesting thing about this book is the very natural and realistic relationships between the people and the events that unfold as a result of these relationships. The characters act out because of their shame, fear, loyalty, envy, ambition, sloth, etc. They all have unique characters and world views and all act accordingly. It seems an odd thing to say, but it seems very organic and believable. I think Granger must be a great student of human nature.

I quite like the main characters, too. Meredith Mitchell works for the Foreign Office and her fiancé Alan Marksby is in the police. In their 30's and 40's, they are a strong couple who are willing to compromise to be together and tolerate each other's baggage. Like Toby Smythe, a friend and co-worker of Meredith's who Alan doesn't care for, and who gets them involved in their current unpleasantness - poison pen letters which are being sent to his aunt.

Another thing I liked about this book is that Granger doesn't have Mitchell and Marksby competing to solve the crime before the other does. I find it so annoying when the unofficial detective messes up evidence and conceals information from the police. Instead, she investigates background information that the police don't have the time or inclination to pursue and then turns over what she finds to Marksby. It is a pleasing, cooperative effort that doesn't grate on the nerves.

Did I guess it? Sort of. If you are looking for a solid mystery with really good characters, pick this one up. This is a long series and I plan to go back and read the others, too.

3 out of 5 stars Enjoyable.......2006-01-28

Agree with Laura Pressler regarding the grammatical errors/typos. It's really said when you pay for a book and the entire story line is disruped with these errors.

4 out of 5 stars Very Enjoyable Read.......2005-03-15

I was eagerly awaiting the next installment in this series, and I was not disappointed. This was a very enjoyable and satisfying read, even if, as others have pointed out, the ending was a little rushed. If you haven't read any of the earlier Mitchell and Markby mysteries by Ms. Granger it may take you a little while to understand the relationships among the repeating characters, but that won't detract from the story and shouldn't stop you from starting with this book. I suspect that when you're finished you'll want to read the earlier ones as well.

I'm looking forward to the next book in the series, and hope there's not as much time between books as there was between this and the previous one.

I have just one quibble. Did others notice the several typographical errors throughout the book? I think editors and proofreaders are relying too heavily on computerized spelling and grammar checkers, and not enough on carefully reviewing the actual text.

4 out of 5 stars A village mystery that has some realism........2005-03-01

Detective Superintendent Alan Markby and his fiancé Meredith Mitchell have been asked to look into the source of some poison pen letters by Toby Smythe , a friend and colleague of Meredith's . Meredith and Toby have been friends for years and both work for the Foreign Office. Toby's uncle, Jeremy Jenner's second wife has been receiving hateful letters alluding to a murder trial in which she was the defendant twenty years ago. She was cleared of the charges, but it seems someone wants to embarrass her. Before Markby and Merideth's investigation has barely started, Jeremy Jenner`s daughter is found murdered made to look like the murder so many years ago.

Ann Granger can be counted upon to produce a really good cozy mystery. Her characters are a bit more realistic and dimensional than the traditional cozy. The plot was well constructed. The clues came at a quick enough pace to keep suspense high without it being a book that could not be put down. I look forward to the next Markby and Mitchell mystery.

4 out of 5 stars 3 1/2 stars: enjoyable in spite of the rushed ending.......2005-02-10

Meredith Mitchell is rather looking forward to her upcoming marriage to Detective Superintendent Alan Markby, and their moving into the old vicarage. But first comes the packing, renovating of the vicarage and selling of both their current abodes. And in the meantime there is Meredith's old friend, Toby Smythe's return to England to enjoy. But Toby has a problem -- or more exactly a relative of his has. Alison Jenner, Toby's cousin's wife, has been receiving poison pen letters. About 25 years ago, Alison's aunt, Freda Kemp, was murdered, and Alison was tried for the crime. She was, however, acquitted of the charge. But now, she's receiving letters accusing of the murder and threatening to make her pay for her crime. Alison is near breaking point, and so Toby asks for Markby to talk to the Jenners and listen to their concerns. And although Markby is understandably reluctant to get unofficially involved in anything, he agrees to meet the Jenners. But before he can even start an investigation into the poison pen letters, Alison's stepdaughter is murdered in a manner similar to Freda Kemp. Is the murderer and the poison pen writer one and the same? Are the two murders, separated by 25 years connected at all? And what is Alison's part in all this? Is she innocent of all that is happening around her? Or is she hiding a darker and more sinister character? Detective Superintendent Markby must ask himself all these questions as he considers all the angles of this case...

This latest Mitchell & Markby mystery novel while enjoyable and intriguing, still felt a little off mainly because of the manner in which it suddenly culminated -- things were unfolding at a sedate but satisfactorily manner, when things suddenly picked up at a dizzy pace and clues and suspects came out of the woodwork for the explosive end. All very well, but I did still feel a little shortchanged -- perhaps if the real culprit could have been more than just a sinister suggestion in earlier chapters? All in all however, this Mitchell & Markby mystery novels was wonderfully engaging police cozy that was well written and loads of fun to loose oneself in. And in spite of my faintly aggrieved feelings, I did enjoy reading "That Way Lies Murder" quite a bit

4 out of 5 stars Classic science-fiction short stories........2000-05-09

This is a collection of science fiction shorts from Harry Harrison, the creator of The Stainless Steel Rat and Bill The Galactic Hero; 13 of what he considers to be his best. (The rear cover blurb claims 14, but either they can't count, or I can't.)

These are the kind of science fiction short stories that got me interested in the genre, over twenty years ago when I was a kid. Some of them have aged better than others; I find myself shaking my head at some of the stock plots and characters. And some of the ideas that are addressed seem a bit dated, 25 years later. But all of them DO address ideas, ideas that were fascinating to a 14 year old 25 years ago, and would probably be fascinating to one today. Some of them, of course, are fascinating to a 41 year old today.

If you're a fan of old-fashioned science fiction, you'll love this book. If you're not, but are curious about what kind of stories cause those who are to be so, this book is for you. And if you're an inquisitive youngster who HASN'T read a lot of science fiction, this book is perfect for you. But if you've read a lot of classic science fiction, and have gotten a bit jaded, you may find this book a bit too reminiscent of an old copy of Analog magazine.

"To tell you the truth, you can learn the basics of meditation in five minutes," asserts Stephan Bodian, meditation instructor, psychotherapist, and former editor-in-chief of Yoga Journal. You can also study meditation for years, exploring its subtleties. Meditation for Dummies is a simple, clear introduction to the basics of meditation, including an overview of dozens of techniques, practices, and specific meditations, plus direction for going deeper. You get step-by-step instructions for a variety of meditations, including body position, mental concentration, where to put your attention, what to contemplate or notice, physical movements, and breathing. A nice touch is the recurring "traditional wisdom": ancient stories or anecdotes that make a point. This book is useful whether you want the nuts and bolts for getting started in the next minute or you want to dip your mind into different practices and philosophies. Nothing is too elementary to explain: "how to sit up straight--and live to tell about it," what to wear, dealing with fear and self-judgment, and what to do when you get "stuck." You also get plenty of information about the benefits and varieties of meditation. You're bound find and develop a practice that feels right for you. --Joan Price

5 out of 5 stars Great book.......2007-09-24

Excellent book for beginners like myself! A good balance of theory and practice. I really liked how the author described different types of meditation techniques. I experimented with all of them and picked the ones that worked for me. I would highly recommend this book!

5 out of 5 stars Awesome Reference Guide for Medititation.......2007-07-10

I purchased "Meditation for Dummies" several years ago, when I wasn't really sure just what meditation was or what type of meditation might be best for me - and even now, all these years later, I consider it the best meditation book I've purchased to date!

Unlike most of the books on meditation out there today - which tend to focus solely on one type - this one covers a wide range of different ways to meditate, including information concerning how that form of meditation came to be & easy step-by-step instructions on how to do it.

Through the use of icons, this book is structured in such a way that you can easily find information concerning:

1. Brief refreshing meditation exercises
2. Things to remember
3. Philosophical "musings"
4. Tips on how to make your meditations easier & more effective
5. Traditional wisdom - wisdom from groups who've been meditating for
thousands of years

Also, depending on where you are in your meditation practice, you can easily find the chapters that deal with:

1. What meditation is & other general info.
2. How to get started
3. Troubleshooting & fine-tuning your meditation practice
4. How to use meditation throughout the day
5. Answers to the most frequently asked questions

Overall, this book provides you with everything you need to begin &/or expand your meditation practice - and it does so in an easy-to-understand, fun way! I can't recommend it highly enough!

5 out of 5 stars Buy it - a thoughtful, thorough & entertaining resource........2007-07-07

I read a number of other meditation books & listened to tapes before checking this book out of the library. I immediately knew I needed to own this resource. The title belies the insight and value of the content. It is easy to use & is a ready reference book. The author did a marvelous job!

Simple. To the point. Lots of recommendations. Easy to read. What more could you ask for on the subject of meditation? Nothing. If you need a starting off point to learn how to meditate, then this is the book for you. Great value for all the info in it!

Spirituality for Dummies is for smart souls who know that we are all really beginners when it comes to understanding spirituality. Like all books for dummies, the layout is filled with lots of information boxes, bulleted lists, humorous cartoons, quick tips, and pithy quotes (from Marcus Aurelius to George Carlin).

Fortunately, author Sharon Janis put a lot of research into this informative discussion on spiritual growth. As a result, she maintains a solid voice that transcends the cluttered and sometimes superficial format. Spiritual practices, such as yoga and mediation, are briefly explained along with how to cultivate spiritual values and rise above suffering. At times she offers the kindly voice of experience: "When I'm able to give something to another person, I know it is God giving through me. Then, rather than expecting anything in return I am grateful for having been of service." At other times she is the voice of a well-educated teacher: "Ex means 'out of,' while status is a 'fixed condition.' This means that, in a way, the more fixed conditions you have to move out of, the more ecstatic you can become. Therefore every trouble in your life is really a beautiful gift to be unwrapped." --Gail Hudson

Sharon is humorous as well as informative and wise...definitely this book is a keeper. That's all I have to say for the spitiual seekers out there.

5 out of 5 stars Great introduction to spirituality!.......2007-06-08

This book is a great introduction to spiritual concepts which has helped me begin a spiritual journey. The book presents a different way of looking at the world, which is helpful to me since I was raised in a traditional Christian environment.

This book has given me enough background information to understand more complicated texts, which is exactly why I bought it.

The author does a great job of incorporating traditions and sayings from many different religions. It is well written and easy to understand - even humorous!

5 out of 5 stars This book was EXACTLY what I was looking for!!.......2007-02-07

After years of wondering what the meaning of life was, and what my purpose here on earth is, I found this book! It helped me uncover the world of spirituality, which in turn helped me answer some of these most fundamental questions!

The book is such an easy read, and the author has a brilliant sense of humor. I often reference the book over and over, for information on certain specific subjects, which is very easy to do in the "Dummies" format. It is also written to embrace all religions, non-religions, races, genders, etc. It truly is a book for everyone!

I recommend this book to anyone seeking to grow spiritually, and I hope you enjoy it as much as I did (and still do)!

3 out of 5 stars Good Book - Bad Music.......2006-11-04

I found this a good read in better understanding of the subject. It is a good beginning.

BUT the CD is worthless. The music is an insult to all the wonderful types of music that could have been included to support the search for a more spiritual life. Where is Mozart, Japanese flute, or Tibetan, etc.?

      4 out of 5 stars Gets a point across.......2006-09-13

While I was hoping for a more traditional, religious description of spirituality in Spirituality for Dummies, the end result that I found was also fairly illuminating. One of the common themes in many religions is a quest for what we call spirituality, roughly meaning a sense of universal connection and enlightenment. Author Sharon Janis has described this phenomenon focusing on spirituality directly rather than as an aspect of some particular religion or by comparison to any theology, though she does relate it somewhat more to Eastern traditions than to Western ones.

From the start her focus is on the ordinary, individual practitioner. In the context here, spirituality is a somewhat new-age experience (however old the traditions are elsewhere in the world). It relates to a notion of letting go of physical and material attachments. The word `attachment' is key, and Janis reiterates the common notion that anything in moderation is probably unproblematic. It boils down to the notion that if one never expects anything, one is never disappointed. Put another way, you can't take it with you. Put another way, ... the list of well-known sayings is quite long and familiar. Janis organizes her words well, and tries to relate an abundance of suggestions and ideas to a wide variety of issues in life. She does fall into the common-enough habit of `reminding' the reader of how unhappy he is with a `materialistic' or `consumer' culture. We can infer then that the target audience is one that has already accepted, implicitly or otherwise, that several aspects of Western Civilization are known to be flawed, harmful, or unproductive of overall happiness. Anyone satisfied with his or her own life is unlikely to be swayed by the book. On the other hand, many of these sayings, expanded and commented upon here, can provide some concise reminders that we should occasionally step back and examine our priorities. Sometimes thinking about our position in the universe and our relation to other people can serve as a reality-check. That much I think is accessible to any reader. For the rest, I'd venture to say that the reader will get out of Spirituality for Dummies as much as he is already ready to take in.

3 out of 5 stars Most useful for those just learning about nutrition.......2006-04-18

If you are not currently practicing a whole foods diet and want more information on why you should, this could be a good resource. If you already practice a whole foods diet this book is probably not for you.

The book covers a lot of topics (pesticides, hormones, bacterial contamination, food irradiation, and chemical additives to name a few) some of them in more detail than others. This book did not present any new information for me, but I have been studying nutrition for about 9 years. If I had found this book at the beginning of my journey for nutritional knowledge it would have been helpful to point me in the right direction.

On the positive side, this book is approximately twenty five percent recipes. The Oat Nut Crust in the dessert section of the book is actually quite good. I prepared the crust with 100% whole-wheat flour and it came out fine.

Overall, if you are new to nutrition and/or whole foods this might be worth a read. If you have other books on whole foods or nutrition I would recommend passing on this book.

5 out of 5 stars The whole food bible.......2005-12-07

I really liked this book because it informs people about each food group and their importance in nutrition but above all is an eye opener for those who have never being exposed to the concept of whole food and the importance to partake in the betterment of our agriculture and how does the multiple pesticides and fungides affects the nutritional value of our foods. It encourages people to take a good look at what they are putting in their mouths and make them aware that going organic is the safest way to go. This book has the same old information you have already heard. I really did not like this book. It had several items that are false in it, like gorillas eat meat, which they do not. It has lots of negative information on various foods but offers no suggestions on where to buy an alternative product. I just do not see the point of adding this book to your library or collection. No new information whatsoever.

      Thanks

Very, very impressed with this book. Written in 1990, he was way ahead of the curve in his assessments and judgements on the food industry. Last 100 pages are recipes which I have mostly made and were all good. If we are what we eat, we're all in trouble. Very enlightening. Read this in conjunction with "My Year of Meats" by Ruth Ozeki and the February, 2006, issue of "Consumer Reports".
