I loved this book! I hope the author continues with the series, because I'm ready for more!

5 out of 5 stars When's the next one!.......2007-01-03

Well Just finnished, and I have to say that I loved this book series! I'm a little bummed though that their hasn't been a new one since 2005! I really hope that Laura Bradley continues with this series. It be cool to see it as a movie or somthing! Anyone know her e-mail or somthing, I'm courious to know what happend w/ this series.

3 out of 5 stars Poor writing ruins a good character and concept.......2005-12-12

I really wanted to like this book. I still like the concept and the character Reyn, but did not like a few things about the writing. It may seem like I am being harsh compared to other reviewers of this book, but the bad writing really prevented me from enjoying it, and I would hate for other people to have the same negative experience.

Here are three things I could not overlook. If you don't think they are a big deal, then you might like the book enough to enjoy it. First, the author kept mentioning things from her first book without explaining them in this book. The author either assumed that you had read the first book, or would go out and buy it, or just didn't realize how important it is for the first time reader to be let in on "the deal." For example, she kept mentioning that Reyn's friend Trude and Jackson Scythe, the "love" interest, have a deal between them, and Reyn is involved. Like Trude bet Jackson that Reyn would or would not do something. It is never clear what the something is or what the deal is about. It may have something to do with sex, but considering Reyn and Jackson never get down and dirty, who knows. It was cute at the begining, but by the end of the book I just didn't care. Second, many events have to conveniently happen and characters have to conveniently know what might otherwise be useless information, in order for the plot to be moved along. Like Reyn's friend Charlotte just happens to know another character (spoiler) who who knows some important information (spoiler) and works for (spoiler) and is friends with (spoiler). Third, there was very little chemistry between Reyn and Jackson other than them glaring at each other. I don't know what happened (or didn't) in the first book between them, but nothing much does in this one.

That being said, the dialogue did have its funny moments, and I liked that the character is a hairstylist and owns her own shop. If Laura Bradley's writing improves, I would read another of her books.

5 out of 5 stars Murder , Texas & a hot cop - what more could you want !.......2005-07-11

This is the first book I have read of Laura Bradley and just thought it was amazing. This is the story of hair dresser who finds herself in the middle of murder and hot cop who is trying to keep her out of danger and maybe into her pants. I can't wait to read her next one. Sit back and enjoy the adventure... I thought this book was great but my sister thoughts it was awful and never finished the book.

5 out of 5 stars An excellent sequel.......2003-07-28

This book suceeded where many others have failled in following up the first novel. However the prices for it second hand here are outrageous! Especially considering the author offers it from her website, signed for much less than most of these prices.

5 out of 5 stars OldSciFiDog.......2001-10-04

Legends Walking, is the second in this world of Athanor (following Changer), which is placed in contemporary times with the addition of an immortal species co-existing with us. In this tale we discover some new characters, and get to know some of the previous character in more detail.

Ms Lindskold's characterization is superb. They have a sense of humor and different personalities which, as one might suspect, sometimes conflict with each other (some don't even like each other and they are on the same side). This makes for a very pleasant and believable read. The plot moves very well and I found myself consuming the 400 + pages without knowing it.

I liked this sequel most because it focused on a different set of characters in solving the plot crisis, so we get to see these characters using their unique skills. Jane is very consistent in both plot and characters, so we are NOT treated to discontinuities in characters to conveniently get out of a bad scene. She also has the ability to describe scenes without bludgeoning us to death with detail, which is very refreshing.

I must say I dislike giving maximum ratings, just in case the author does better. In this case as in the first tale, Changer, I feel the author deserves a "Bravo" well done, and if she does better, I will just have to deal with it.

So, in case you missed my point, I like this author and this tale and believe both needs to be read and enjoyed (if not, no offense is meant by stating the obvious).

5 out of 5 stars Excellent, excellent.......2000-10-13

Jane Lindskold once again has written a wonderfully fascinating and complex novel. Many different story lines and characters blend to make both "Legends Walking" and "Changer" surprising books. I could hardly put this book down, although I had to in order to process the ideas and plot twists. Both come at a quick pace throughout the story. I loved getting new looks at old characters, and some development of interesting secondary characters from "Changer," as well as the introduction of new friends. The idea of elemental athanor seems wondrous and fun.

Biological warfare offers such an ugly, inhumane choice to dictators around the world. I think Lindskold looks into the horrors of plague without preaching about it. This book presents a look at some serious subjects, like biological warfare, AIDS in Africa, and the development of third world countries. Lindskold doesn't give easy or trite answers, but in twisting our everyday world just a bit, she does shed some light on the subjects.

I would recommend this book to anyone! It's fun, thoughtful, fun and well written.

5 out of 5 stars Legends Revisited.......2000-08-31

I don't like fantasy novels. I have read far too many verbose tale of elves struggling to recover some musty old talisman. Pretty much swore off the whole genre. That was before I read the Athanor books. Instead of mystical ancient kingdoms we have New Mexico and Nigeria. Instead of a hokey sword wielding hero(ine) and their trusty sidekicks we have an astounding cast of characters ranging from computer-literate sasquatches to immortal farm animals. How refreshing! Ms Lindskold has developed a wonderful idea for a series. In each of the two books so far she has focused on different members of the Athanor community, at this rate it will be a long time before she runs out of fresh ideas. This is one fantasy series where I can't wait to see the next installment.

5 out of 5 stars A thoroughly enjoyable read.......2000-08-03

A thoroughly enjoyable read on many levels. I'm so happy to have "discovered" Jane Lindskold. Her characters are thoroughly believable and well-fleshed out. "Legends Walking" deserves a nod for having as its setting one of the most mysterious places in all of literature-- Africa. Lindskold, through her characters, treats the citizens of Nigeria with respect for their pre-European contact beliefs, and appreciation and concern for their efforts to modernize. The athanor are very much like the Greek gods that some of them have lived as -- capable of all the same moral and emotional highs and lows as any non-magically gifted being. I highly recommend Lindskold's books as a much-needed break from all the Tolkien clones that contribute to the needless deaths of millions of trees. I am eagerly awaiting the next sequel -- or even a prequel!

The Myers-Briggs Type Indicator temperament test is given annually to millions of people, mainly business students and job applicants. But what good does it do, short of giving you a catchy-sounding, four-letter abbreviation (ENTJ, ISFP) that you can sometimes use to break the ice at cocktail parties? The aim of this book is to help you apply your knowledge to the benefit of both your work and love life--and to teach you how to prevent personality clashes by slightly adjusting your behavior around others, once you ascertain which "type" they fall under.

The four areas covered by Myers-Briggs are how you relate to the world (Extraverting or Introverting); how you take in information (Sensing or iNtuiting); how you make decisions (Thinking or Feeling); and how you manage your life (by Judging or Perceiving). If you don't already know your profile, take the fun and quick 20-question quizzes for each of the four categories. (Do you dislike routine and repetition? Do you prefer to finish one project before starting another, or does that not matter to you? Do people seek you out for warmth and nurturing?) You're then given tons of tips for getting along in this world. ESFPs are warned that they should not get involved in too many activities, lest they forget their responsibilities. INTJs need to learn to be more flexible, and are sometimes best off working for themselves. If you're dating someone who's an NF, "give them cards, gifts, compliments, hugs, adoration, and other forms of loving attention"; they enjoy romance and need this kind of doting.

There's also fascinating information about which functions are dominant in each of the 16 types, and how they're broken out by percentages, population-wide.

Book Description

The Myers-Briggs Type Indicator (MBTI) is the most widely used psychological indicator in the world. Millions of people take the test annually. Now a family therapist explains this fascinating system of ideas to the public in a way that is entertaining and easy to absorb. Based on the work of Carl Jung, the MBTI is a system that discusses people's individual preferences on four basic scales: how they relate to the world, take in information, make decisions, and manage their lives. Renee Baron takes on the complexity of the sixteen personality types and makes them accessible so the general reader can comprehend them, find their own type, and use the knowledge to enrich their own lives. She presents information about individual strengths and weaknesses along with suggestions for personal growth and awareness. Insightful, helpful, and encouraging, What Type Am I? is the only user-friendly guide to the MBTI--and an eminently useful step in helping individuals appreciate, and apply their strength, to work, love, and life.
Baron has co-authored two bestselling books: Are You My Type, Am I Yours and The Eneagram Made Easy

4 out of 5 stars Great starter for 10 .......2007-03-19

This is a great book if you are just starting out on your understanding of personality type and myers briggs. It gives you enough detail to provide you with understanding but doesn't overwhelm you with talk of the more advanced applications of the theory.

This would have got 5 stars if I had read it a couple of years ago!

4 out of 5 stars Very simple and helpful.......2007-03-13

The myers briggs info here is very simplified. There are a number of pages to give you a perspnality test and get you on the way to better understanding what "type" you are. Helpful info but also get other books to give you insight as to the "type" breakdowns.

5 out of 5 stars informative, accurate, and interesting.......2007-01-09

This is a good basis for the personality types, and one that seemed to be accurate and informative. It's interesting to read and will help with not only your own personality, but also with interacting with other personality types and understanding them better.

3 out of 5 stars Not quite what I expected.......2006-11-05

This book was TOO 'easy'. I wanted a summary, but the text read more like a magazine article than a serious discussion and comparison of the personality types.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent and fun introduction to Myers-Brigg Types.......2006-09-26

This short and fun book is a wonderful introduction to the Myers-Brigg types. It is written in an easy to understand, humorous style and is meant to be as entertaining as it is educational. If you want to know the basics and have a good laugh this short book will not disappoint you. It is also well-organized and contains quite a few great cartoons.

The spiritual premise in The Purpose-Driven Life is that there are no accidents---God planned everything and everyone. Therefore, every human has a divine purpose, according to God's master plan. Like a twist on John F. Kennedy's famous inaugural address, this book could be summed up like this: "So my fellow Christians, ask not what God can do for your life plan, ask what your life can do for God's plan." Those who are looking for advice on finding one's calling through career choice, creative expression, or any form of self-discovery should go elsewhere. This is not about self-exploration; it is about purposeful devotion to a Christian God. The book is set up to be a 40-day immersion plan, recognizing that the Bible favors the number 40 as a "spiritually significant time," according to author Rick Warren, the founding pastor of Saddleback Church in Lake Forest, California, touted as one of the nation largest congregations. Warren's hope is that readers will "interact" with the 40 chapters, reading them one day at a time, with extensive underlining and writing in the margins. As an inspirational manifesto for creating a more worshipful, church-driven life, this book delivers. Every page is laden with references to scripture or dogma. But it does not do much to address the challenges of modern Christian living, with its competing material, professional, and financial distractions. Nonetheless, this is probably an excellent resource for devout Christians who crave a jumpstart back to worshipfulness. --Gail Hudson

Download Description

Another Landmark Book by Rick Warren. You are not an accident. Even before the universe was created, God had you in mind, and he planned you for his purposes. These purposes will extend far beyond the few years you will spend on earth. You were made to last forever! Self-help books often suggest that you try to discover the meaning and purpose of your life by looking within yourself, but Rick Warren says that is the wrong place to start. You must begin with God, your Creator, and his reasons for creating you. You were made by God and for God, and until you understand that, life will never make sense. This book will help you understand why you are alive and God's amazing plan for you-both here and now, and for eternity. Rick Warren will guide you through a personal 40-day spiritual journey that will transform your answer to life's most important question: What on earth am I here for? Knowing God's purpose for creating you will reduce your stress, focus your energy, simplify your decisions, give meaning to your life, and, most importantly, prepare you for eternity. The Purpose-DrivenT Life is a blueprint for Christian living in the 21st century-a lifestyle based on God's eternal purposes, not cultural values. Using over 1,200 scriptural quotes and references, it challenges the conventional definitions of worship, fellowship, discipleship, ministry, and evangelism. In the tradition of Oswald Chambers, Rick Warren offers distilled wisdom on the essence of what life is all about. This is a book of hope and challenge that you will read and re-read, and it will be a classic treasured by generations to come.

5 out of 5 stars insightful, filled with truth.......2007-10-02

this book is full of quotes from the Bible, telling how God wants us to live. i especially appreciated the use of several different translations and paraphrases- it really firmed up my understanding of passages i had just heard many times, but not totally grasped.

5 out of 5 stars Great Book!.......2007-09-29

If your willing to devote a few minutes a day for 40 days, Rick Warren can lead you to a better life. Other than the Bible this is the best book I have ever read. If you feel your life is missing something this may be your answer. This book shows that it's all about God, no one is an accident, we were made to be part of God's family, we are shaped for God's service, we have a mission and only through seeking God can we know why we are on this planet. Rick Warren is uplifting, comforting, and this book changed my life. I hope 40 days from now you can say the same.

5 out of 5 stars Outstanding.......2007-08-24

Rick Warren has hit the nail on the head. The question for every believer is whether or not they are "doing" what they were created to "do." What is the purpose of each individual. The Purpose Driven Life advances that in a great way.

Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars Chewing the Fat.......2007-09-01

I have loved most of Bill Cosby's books, yet his two most recent publications, this one and "Congratulations! Now What? A Book for Graduates" have fallen very flat. Perhaps I would have appreciated this book more if I was in the same age group. Even as health conscious as I am, I still think Cosby missed the mark.

Each chapter continues a theme of the pitfalls of getting old. Whether it means having to change your diet or alter other vices from your life, the body cannot have certain things if we are to live a long life. Obviously, Cosby takes a humorous approach to this subject. He does not actually claim to be a health expect. The problem is that Cosby's jokes have already been done, mostly by many other people.

I would recommend most of Cosby's books expect those cited. It seems Cosby is at his best when he is talking about the family or experiences of his youth. In his most recent work, he may be straying too far outside his strength.

3 out of 5 stars I Am What I Ate.......2006-12-21

ISBN 0060545747 - Not the sort of laugh out loud funny that Cosby usually does, this book is still amusing - more importantly, it's an honest look at the results of a lifetime of bad habits. For folks who won't listen to their doctors, take it from a man who's clearly not fond of listening to his doctor, either!

I was disappointed to not find this book on a par with Cosby's usual humor. Still, not a terrible read, either. Read it for a chuckle, pick up a copy of his stand-up routines for real laughs.

5 out of 5 stars Really Nice!.......2006-02-19

Whether you do or don't like the humor of Bill Cosby, you should read this book if you have any sense of humor at all then you will enjoy it if you do! It's everything funny about why good food can make us feel bad. This book is great for anyone who is having to go to the doctor... over and over... or multiple doctors because it reminds you to laugh to keep from crying! And helps you laugh so hard you cry - at least I did!

5 out of 5 stars Bill Cosby.......2005-03-18

Bill Cosby the doctor of comedy has written a book about a healthy life stile. If you dodge diets, you should read it. If you're creative you should read it. If you like imagining people making a fool of themselves in the act of not following their diets you should read it. In my opinion this is a funny book. He eats a cookie and gets caught because he said he was going to the bathroom. If you like funny books you'll like it.

4 out of 5 stars Not What I Expected.......2005-01-08

In this book, Bill Cosby discusses, in a humorous way, various changes he has experienced at age 65 and his struggles to give up his excessive, unhealthy eating habits after learning from his doctor that he has very high cholesterol and a thirty percent blockage in the carotid artery.

While it is neither the roaringly humorous book I expected nor a preachy diet book, it is a quick and pleasant read that had me chuckling quite a bit and identifying with many of his observations. His casual writing style, delivered as though he were sitting next to you and talking, accurately captures many of the rationalizations people often use to justify behavior they know is not in their best interest, be it smoking, drinking or eating fat and cholesterol-laden foods. I thought one of the funniest sections was his discussion of hair and skin, where he observes that "as you get older, you don't have oil. The skin is drier." And, regarding hair, he wants to know why he lost hair from the top of his head and it came out on his back and in his nose and ears. Gray hair at that! "What am I turning into?", he asks. I suspect there are a few of us in our fifties and sixties who have had similar thoughts. He also cites his father as having compared the human body to a machine, which, at age 65, has "old parts" -- a simplistic but plausible explanation for many of the aches, pains and limitations one experiences in the later years.

In all, the book is funny and enjoyable. And, possibly, it may be helpful to those struggling with changing their eating habits and other aspects of getting older, as they step back and see it through Bill Cosby's eyes.

5 out of 5 stars If Life Is a Bowl of Cherries, What Am I Doing in the Pits.......2007-09-08

The book arrived in a timely manner and was in excellent condition. I gave the book as a gift to a sick cousin.

5 out of 5 stars You'll Laugh Out Loud.......2007-08-24

Don't get on a bus, train or plane and read this book because you will laugh out loud and people will want you to explain your laughter.I love this book I had it in the 70s it was funny then and it is funnier now.

5 out of 5 stars Funny, warm and true!.......2006-05-16

I am on an Erma Bombeck kick ~~ and to be honest, this one is my favorite. I have rated all the others a five but if I could rate this one a ten, I would. It's funny, it's warm and it's loving as well as full of statire. I love statire. It's not the mushy warmth you'd think you're getting. Even if it is a bit dated (I grew up in the 70s & 80s) ~~ the insights are still true today.

This book made me laugh and made me cry. I think my absolute favorite chapter would be: I am Laughing So Hard that I Can't Stop Crying. I think I cried and laughed throughout that whole chapter. There's one where the father grumbles about the grass being torn up because of the wading pool, the sledding parties and beach parties. Then there's the one where it says, I love you enough to say no .... truths that my parents have always said to me and truths that I plan to pass onto my kids.

This book is heartfelt and witty. I wish there are more writers like Erma still out there. Sometimes, it seems like not everyone has a sense of humor anymore about life ~~ and even though life was hard, Erma made it all worthwhile. It still rings true today.

5 out of 5 stars If LIfe Is a Bowl of Cherries What Am I Doing in the Pits?.......2006-03-24

Funny and relevant to anyone who has a life and a family!!!

5 out of 5 stars warm, witty and full of insight!.......2006-02-19

For those of you unfamiliar with Erma Bombeck, I suggest that you check this book out, as part of your introduction to her wonderful, unique brand of comedy. Most of her insights in this book (like many of her books) are family-centered observations, that relate to the part that exists in all of us--yes, that tension between us and the fear that we are indeed a product of our environment, and that we also may be turning into our parents!!!!

Bombeck takes on the topics like housecleaning, childrearing and the day-to-day sagas of the American housewife. Don't let anyone tell you otherwise, that job, in and of itself, is just as full time and demanding as any out-of-the-house kind of work. Bombeck depicts her experiences, as a housewife, with a combination of wit and sensitivity that also makes her exceptionally engaging as a wonderful storyteller. A fast and entertaining read!!

5 out of 5 stars BENNETT REALLY HELPS DUMMIES.......2004-03-09

This is an amazingly intuitive book. Bennett anticipates just about everything a life-long non-cook could encounter. If you know anyone who has suddenly been thrust into a situation where they must cook food which is appealing to them, this book is for that person.

Start with the very, very basics like cooking pre-cooked rice, cooking greens or browning onions. It's there. Out of an ingredient? Learn timely substitutes.

After the Contents at a Glance, find Recipes at a Glance listed by description (six pages of them). These include entertaining suggestions, "Especially for Two," 20-Minute Main Dishes and 15-Minute-or-Less Main Dishes. The actual Table of Contents is seven pages in length! Repeated eye-catchers offer hand-held tips such as "Caution," "Remember," or just plain "Tip." Taking a new cook by the hand is further evidenced with the 19-page index.

HIGHLIGHTS:
Following the Grain Trail
Herb Chart
How to judge a safe salad bar
Preparing pre-cooked spuds
Sauces in Seconds, including some International Sauces
Tips on seasoning your salad dressing
Purchasing, storing and browning ground beef (vs. hamburger)
Seeding a cucumber
Making a mountain of lettuce
Flattening a chicken breast for even cooking
Making French Fry Soup, (lotsa calories).

Bennett makes food and its preparation lighten up. In her chapter, 20 Tips for Eliminating Mealtime Hassles, she deals with topics such as, Making Relaxation a Priority, Keeping Everything Handy, and (very important) Asking for Help. More of Bennett's anticipation shows up in her sections on Asking for Help, Coping with Bumps in the Road, Having Fun and Sharing. This book won't necessarily get a dummie cooking, it can teach a lot of tricks to anyone hungry, dumb or not.

Bev Bennett is also author of the award-winning Two's Company. ...
