You can almost smell the cotton candy and hear the barkers inviting you to try your skill at a game of chance in this lively new mystery starring Colleton County, North Carolina, Judge Deborah Knott. Knott's stunned to discover that Brazos Hartley, murdered on the midway at the Harvest Festival carnival, was a member of her family; his mother, Tally Ames, is Deborah's first cousin, born of a shotgun marriage and abandoned as a child by her father, Deborah's brother. Naturally, when there's a second carnival murder, Deborah can't help getting involved in the investigation, even if it means uncovering secrets some of her relatives would just as soon keep confidential. The huge Knott clan, with Deborah at its center, gives Maron a wealth of material (the judge herself is one of 12 siblings!), which she makes the most of with wonderfully drawn characters and a beautifully evoked setting. The next best thing to a summer night at a country carnival, Slow Dollar is a standout in a series that just keeps getting better. --Jane Adams

An enjoyable modern cozy.......2007-01-06
Cozy mysteries are really of two types: Novels in the traditional cozy style whose main emphasis is a mystery and its resolution (e.g., Agatha Christie, Dorothy L. Sayers) and novels in the more modern cozy format, whose main emphasis is on social interactions (primarily between family, friends, and coworkers) with the mystery being a smaller component of the exposition. This is definitely a cozy in the latter form. Remove the additional social interactions, and this mystery could be presented in a novella or even a short story, although not as interestingly.
If you find modern cozies appealing, you will certainly find this an interesting book. Here, self-assured Judge Deborah Knott finds a dead worker while visiting the annual Harvest Festival Carnival. The reason for this death and the identity of the killer is the primary mystery. The preface provides a family tree of the Knott family, which is absolutely needed, as the Knotts are a large family, many of whom are presented in this novel. Readers will find themselves frequently referencing this chart to keep track of Knott family members. Fortunately, the number of carnival workers and additional characters is relatively small, but it may still pay to keep some brief notes of who they are as you read. There is also an informative addendum with a glossary of carnival terms, e.g., "cutting up jackpots", "plush", "rake `em and scrape `em" that are used in the novel.
I felt the story started somewhat slowly, but it quickly caught my interest, and as events unfolded it became harder to put down. Although the story is told in the first person, in terms that will probably appeal mostly to female readers, and there are probably more descriptions of Judge Knott's clothing choices than would interest male readers, this novel should none-the-less appeal to both sexes.
The novel reads quickly and easily, and provides a very enjoyable way to relax.

i really like this book! it's great to discover a new mystery author.
Better and Better.......2004-01-21
This is one of the few mystery series going today that, even with this, the 9th entry, just keeps getting better. There has been only one book (Killer Market) in this series that I found to be even a bit lacking and that is quite unusual in a series that has gone on this long. In this episode, Judge Deborah Knott goes to the local carnival with her friends and discovers a dead body. As she works to solve the murder with her friend Dwight, we are exposed to more of her large family, but it really never gets confusing. Maron manages to make it clear who belongs to whom, even with the added relatives that this tale brings into the picture. The mystery is interesting and hard to solve and, just as importantly, there is progress in Deborah's personal life that is very satisfying to read. I know that Maron's next book is a stand-alone (neither a Knott nor a Harald book...will she ever write more Sigrid Harald books?) but I will definitely buy it. I just hope she returns to North Carolina soon.
A welcome return to greatness in the Knott series.......2003-05-24
I thought the last several books in the Deborah Knott series were pretty poor. Mechanical plots, dull characters, uninteresting and implausible mystery solutions. In one of them, I intuited the murdered from the beginning because s/he was given too much "air time" when s/he was introduced - a common giveaway for untalented mystery writers. I feared that Maron had run out of ideas and was just churning out books for the money.
Happily, "Slow Dollar" more than restores my faith. As is typical with Maron, the point is less the mystery than the characters. As others have indicated, the new characters in "Slow Dollar" are delightfully drawn and wonderfully real. They add more depth to the incredibly complex relationships within Deborah's family.
And I absolutely, positively LOVED the new relationship with Dwight. Yes, I consider myself to be on a first-name basis with these people; they are that real to me.
Thank you, Margaret Maron, from this grateful reader. You're back on track.

12 years later -- still one of the best.......2005-07-01
I read the 1993 (2nd) edition of this when I was fresh out of college. After Atlas Shrugged, was probably the most profitable book I ever read. I'm now well on my way to being well-off, and I credit much of that to the no-nonsense, straightforward advice this book provides.
Like another reviewer, I too have given copies of this book as wedding gifts, homewarming, graduation -- you name it. Some might take it as rude or presumptious perhaps; but what of it. Good advice isn't always pleasant, yet priceless all the same.
If you're under the age of 25, just starting out your career, for god's sake read this book. If you're under the age of 35, *ouch* you're gonna kick yourself on chapter after chapter, but start reading now before the night grows even longer :-)
Read 8 years ago.......2005-04-27
Best advice I ever got on Personal Finance. Glad I acted on
her solid financial education-the truth not the hype-of the financial industry.
Found her statement so very true "The right information is even more valuable than money itself..."
Simple & straightforward explanations of financial subjects.......2004-04-25
I would strongly recommend this book to people of all ages and situations. Ms. McAleese uses clear, easily understood writing with good no-nonsense advice and examples. And her basic aim is quite straightforward - don't make choices about situations involving money without knowing fully how you (and the other guy) stand to benefit. It will show you how to see when a great situation is really only great for the other guy. And thus, you get rich by not giving your money away.
My wife and I have used our copy to guide us through many choices - budgeting, saving, insurance, retirement planning, homebuying - with great success. It has saved us when times were tough and has enabled us to do the things we want without sinking into debt. For a regular middle-class couple, we feel very well off just because we understand our own finances well.
In fact, I regularly give this book as a gift to friends (and their graduation-age kids) as a way to help them avoid some of the mistakes I made before I got this book. I know that sounds cheesy, but it's quite true.
I've referred back to this book over and over since 1990........2002-07-13
This is the greatest gift you can ever give to anyone you know who is just starting out in the world of handling their own finances, as well as someone you know who is already 'in the game'. Make sure all of your young loved ones get this BEFORE the college credit card offers start swarming them in their Freshman year! I wish the author, Tama McAleese, would read this to hear my thanks and my plea for another 'Get Rich Slow' that includes what to do with all of these new things that have popped up like 529 plans, Education IRA's, new IRA contribution amounts, new tax laws, etc. Her foundations are timeless, but I would still love to hear what she has to say about the new trends.
get rich slow.......2001-08-25
this book is a MUST READ. I am a financial planner and still find this book to be the most useful book on the market. It contains timeless concepts not the latest get rich quick schemes. If you buy a financial book buy this one.

Entertaining.......2007-09-11
Depressed and terrified, Evan has horrific dreams which cause him to contemplate suicide. After allowing two close friends to drag him to a satanic bar (you can tell Evan doesn't make the smartest life choices), he soon becomes a captive of the evil barkeep Mac who is secretly a demon in disguise. Ritually tortured, he is eventually freed, and must come face to face with the frightening reality of who his father is and what he must become to survive.
I admit, I picked this book up because of the cover. Two hot guys.. You can't go wrong, right? Well, the novel was a bit slow to start. It takes about 30 pages of Evan self-pity (and stupidity) to get to the good parts... The good part in my case, being Evan's Dad, Brad. Reading about Brad (no its not his real name) is perhaps the best part of the book. His evolution as a character makes it all worthwhile. Evan grew on me a bit too...But I found it difficult to like him.. Evan's not a bad kid... But he is a victim and for the first half (the first book), his victimhood and pain and abused nature did not make light reading.
Which brings me to the final issue with this novel which kept it from being a five star read. At times the author strays off target and brings in a lot of minor characters at once. There are heavy amounts of dialog and I felt like the story strayed from the tight action-packed urban-fantasy package it had previously been. Any time Claudia and her brother were mentioned for instance... Just didn't seem to fit in the whole storyline that well. The dialog in particular between these characters seemed cheesy and overdone. Also, at times I felt the story lacked grounding. The demons can teleport wherever they want to be, and sometimes the real world and the demon world was difficult to distinguish and because the writer does not employ alot of environmental description, this makes this problem worse.
Overall, a good story. Entertaining.

Slow to Start.......2005-12-01
I pulled this one off my shelves the other day and decided to read it right away. But things started out confusingly with references to adventures made in a way that made me think I had missed a previous volume.
What we have is a detective agency that specializes in retrieving lost or stolen art (so why does their ad mention the occult?). The agency is made up of a father, a son and a distant cousin. Father and cousin are daemon lords and the son is a half-breed. Their new case has been thrust upon them and it brings up old memories of how dad got reunited with son (this part really seems like a reference to an earlier book). The case takes them around the world and involves a rival daemon lord.
Much of the plot revolves around the mythology of the seven spheres (humans in the first, daemons in the second) and the interactions of daemon lords and princes. By the last third of the book things are clearer and it became enjoyable to read even if the ending was a bit cliched. I found the cosmology interesting but not the way it was integrated into the story. Since none of heroes are human, their actions, motives and dialogue are hard to understand. I don't feel the reader is brought into the picture properly but if you can handle a book that starts slow and confusing it could be worth sticking with it to the end.
A Great Book.......2003-04-14
I was really amazed by this book. I got it as an interesting read, not expecting such a great tale! I do agree with one problem, and that is i felt there should or was a book before this since the large reference to the past. However, the past is all explained in this book, but i was disapointed to learn there is NOT a book before this one , otherwise i'd be reading it now. The book doesn't qualify as a mystery but more a sci-fi, which makes it all the better to me, and paranormal type book. The book was NEVER boring and happily i never has to skip any "slow parts". If you like daemons, paranormal, etc. i can almost gaurantee you'de like this book. To be more clear on what it is ABOUT, its about a woman who goes to a private detective agency of Bradely, Ryan, and Davis, that specialize in handling "cases involving the occult with descretion", though by some rather daemonic means...However, the plot is raveled with alterial motives and our protagonists soon find themsleves in a rather difficult situation. I highly recomend this book, as well as "Eyes of the Empress." to add a last quote from the hardcover additoin Daemons, Inc.--"They're detectives on a mission. And their methods are...diabolical."
Not a detective story.......2002-12-30
I was somewhat misled by the plot description, essentially "a detective agency, run by demons, investigates a kidnapping." I expected, well, something more of a mystery to be involved. But the identity of the kidnapper is never a mystery, nor is the mysterious Eye of Omage that the kidnapper claims to want for ransom. Villains explain their dark plans at the slightest prompting, and every character introduced, like in a Scooby Doo cartoon, proves to have a role in the Big Plot. Had I been expecting something more in the vampire genre of "sex, death, and angst" I might have been better prepared to like this book.
The description of daemon thinking was interesting, and is what gives this book its second star, for me. One daemon explains: "You see a painting and feel a set of emotions you translate as appreciation. [...] If you could become the painting, love your own beauty, and then pass on, [...] then you'd be getting close [to how daemons experience things]." However, while the description of how daemons are different was interesting, by the fourth or fifth time it was explained in detail that for daemons, it's always now, I was ready for more plot, less exposition. Or, please, a little mystery.
To Hell with The Daemon!.......2000-10-29
This book is so badly done in so many different ways, it's hard to know where to start. That seems to be the author's big problem too: the book reads like some of the worst sequel novels I've seen, where the first hundred pages are spent explaining, in unlovely prose, what happened in the first book. In this case, there was no first book, but the author presents his characters in that manner anyway. The narrative moves with the speed of frozen molasses -- when it isn't moving backwards. Then there are the characters themselves. Billion-year-old daemons who are as tempramental and un-self-controlled as two- year-old kids. This is just really, really stupid stuff. For a couple books that handle similar themes much better, check out Larry Niven & Jerry Pournelle's "Inferno" and Steven Brust's "To Reign In Hell"
Good book!.......2000-04-11
This was a good book. The biggest thing wrong with it is that I kept thinking there was a book before it I should have read. It keeps refering to events in the past, like I should already know of it. I eventually figured it out, but I think that this one should have been a sequel, not a first book. I would recommend it to most people though, it is a good book. They run a detective agency, and all of them seem to be trying to figure out why they like Evan. Kevin is struggling to understand his paternal feelings. Lily occasionally gets confused by her emotions for Evan. Even Evan is trying to figure out why he wants to stay alive. Meanwhile, you are trying to figure out why they don't know. I mean, he is such a great guy!

Customer Reviews:
A good book, a bad book.......2007-09-18
First the good: If you're an exercise novice who recently acquired a Bowflex and got brain-lock while looking at the huge list of potential exercises that came with it, this book -- which is officially sanctioned by Bowflex's manufacturer -- is a Godsend. Darden picks only the most relevant exercises, describes them in great detail with good photos showing correct form, and organizes them into a series of plans (for novices, for intermediates, for advanced bodybuilder types, for people looking to build or slim specific areas of the body) that couldn't be easier to follow -- and that work.
For that alone, the book is worthwhile. Armed with these plans, the new Bowflex owner is much more likely to actually use his or her machine on an ongoing basis, and that's very good. The plans make it very easy to get going, and tangible gains start to come within the first few sessions. Good stuff.
But there's some not-so-good, too. Throughout the book (and indeed, throughout the officially-sanctioned Bowflex literature) there is case study after case study showing folks who made incredible gains -- losing 30 lb in a month, that sort of thing -- following "The Bowflex Plan". What becomes clear after reading is that those gains have less to do with the Bowflex than they do with the rather extreme (1500 cal/day) diet that's part of the "Plan". And, of course, the official Bowflex literature doesn't address the mounds of research showing that weight lost via extreme calorie restriction doesn't tend to stay off long-term. Take these case studies with the appropriate grains of salt.
There's another not-so-good factor in this book, at least from my perspective. Darden is a bodybuilder. His assumptions and recommendations -- ranging from exercise frequency to diet to supplements to appropriate levels of bodyfat -- come from the world of competitive bodybuilding. They aren't geared toward, and aren't always appropriate for, more mainstream athletes interested in improving sports performance or endurance. The Bowflex itself (and to a large extent, Darden's Bowflex workout plans) is certainly very useful for such people, but Darden's beyond-the-Bowflex recommendations may not be. Caveat.
Boflex Body Plan.......2007-09-12
This book was excellent. The book explains the theory behind the exercise and diet programs so you know WHY you are doing certain things. It is written in simplistic form so that anyone can understand the information. I would recommend this book to anyone with a bowflex.
Pleasantly impressed.......2007-09-01
Being someone who is NOT an exercise fanatic, I approached this book with some trepidation, but am considering investing in a Bowflex machine, hence the willingness to venture into this direction. Dr. Darden writes clearly and compellingly, and explains not just what to do, but also why. He is readable, concise and obviously extremely knowledgable in his subject. I found this book to be unexpectedly interesting, and I left it much more enthusiastic to work on bettering my health, both through exercise and diet - good sense and reasonable expectations were stressed.
If anyone can make owning a Bowflex worth the money, it's Darden.......2007-06-23
Up front, I'll acknowledge that everyone is different, and that there are undoubtedly people who will great benefit from owning a Bowflex. I just can't imagine who they are. 95% of the people who invest in a Bowflex will end up using it as a laundry hanger, just like their stationary bike and their Total Gym. It's a vastly overpriced and underpowered device that forces the user to work out in highly contrived ways that won't make a dent in their underdeveloped physiques unless they have amazing genetics.
So if you have a Bowflex, and you aren't getting anywhere with the program in the owner's guide, and you are getting discouraged, and you want to avoid thowing your money away, you should probably get Darden's book. I don't follow Darden's methods - I'm a "Power To The People" devotee, myself - but I think he is a good writer and motivator and a decent program designer for "Nautilus" style training, and his "super hydration" and diet programs will probably be valuable supplemental information for beginners who are losing focus and motivation.
As a piece of exercise equipment, I would barely rate a Bowflex (in any of its incarnations) as 2 stars - it's better than the old "Soloflex",but that's not saying much. Darden must have been desperate for work (or income) to lower himself to writing this, but it's still Ellington Darden, and so it represents a decent start for any clueless beginner.
Good review of Boflex workouts and workout science.......2007-06-14
This book does a good job explaining the science behind diet and exercise in a easy to understand format. It also gives some good workouts for all levels of weightlifters. If you have a boflex, this is a good investment.

Just waste of time .......2007-06-04
I bought this book after reading what other buyers had to say about it. But I realized I made a mistake. As the first recipe I tried the peach muffins, they baked great but tasted horribly bitter, may be I overbaked them. I tried that same recipe again. This time they taste good, not great but give out strong chalky smell. I had to eat the muffin holding my breath, because if I smell it I get the feeling of eating chalk. Now I'm just scared to try out other recipes. It's such waste of time and money.
great muffin book.......2007-05-07
I highly recommend this book. It is so wonderful. I've made many of the recipes and they have all turned out great. I love to cook but I've never been very good at baking, however this book makes it rather fool proof. The only thing that I had to adjust was the oven temp. because the muffin tin I was using worked better at a lower temp. Hope this may help someone else. I actually chose this book over another because of someones review. Thanks.
You can't go wrong!.......2007-04-23
There's a muffin in here for every occasion. I've tried several so far, and their variations, all of them have turned out delicious! If you're concerned about health, there's low-fat, low-sugar, and whole wheat options. If you want something a little more sinful you have to try the chocolate-chocolate chip muffins or the pinneapple-upside-down muffins. There's even cheddar muffins or pizza muffins for Italian night. Even though I've tried several of them, there are still so many more to try, although I think I'll skip the Earl Grey Tea muffins (to each their own). I also found the section in the front, that includes several muffin making tips, useful. It helped me understand why my muffins always turn out so tough. If you love muffins (or even just like them) you'll want to own this book!

I love the recipes in this book. They are great. There are some good tasting recipes in this book.
Every recipe so far a winner.......2006-03-28
I've made several recipes from this cookbook and so far, every one is a winner. My problem is trying not to eat them so often. There are many variations for each recipe and all look worth trying. I love muffins and have made many recipes from many cookbooks. These are the best yet. Easy to follow instructions, too. Oh, the apple ones, and the chocolate chip ones, and the cocoa ones--yuumm! If you like a sweet treat now and then, make a batch. They keep great in the freezer and, in less than a minute in the microwave, you have a luscious treat. Only one wish--that there were calorie counts! Sigh!!
