Book Description

T'is the weeks before Christmas in Upper Peninsula, Michigan, but some big events indeed are stirring for Lakota deputy sheriff Steve Martinez. The normally sleepy woodland town is uncharacteristically alive with activity after the body of one of its most respected residents, Paul Passoja, is found at a forest campsite, the victim of what looks to be a bear attack. From the moment he arrives on the crime scene, things just don't add up for Steve Martinez. Why would Passoja, a skilled camper and hunter, be careless enough to scatter bacon grease near his tent? Lead by curiosity, Steve begins an unofficial investigation of the mishap, only to discover that the "random" animal attack might not be so random after all. It seems that quite a few people in town had reason to do in Paul Passoja, but the evidence isn't pointing to anyone in particular. The more Steve investigates, the deeper he sinks into a mystery as old as the town itself. The seemingly peaceful forest haven was once a hotbed of treachery, and ill will only ripens with age. As he gets closer to the murderer, Steve learns the hard way that whoever killed Paul Passoja is more than willing to do it again. But Steve Martinez's Native American ancestors were never ones to fold, and neither is he.

3 out of 5 stars Not a holiday mystery.......2004-02-27

In the Upper Peninsula of Michigan, a wealthy and politically powerful man is found dead in a campsite. He died of a heart attack after a bear attacked his tent. Deputy Sheriff Steve Martinez notices a trail of bacon fat leading to the tent and wonders if this was actually murder. He investigates.
The locale of the Upper Peninsula is well portrayed in this well written but routine character driven crime drama. The book is packaged as a Christmas tale and this is really misleading. Parts of the book take place during that time of year but the holiday plays no significant role in the story.

5 out of 5 stars A Suprising and Gratifying New Mystery.......2003-10-13

I discovered Henry Kisor some years ago, and a pleasant experience it has been indeed. I started with his book, "Flight of the Gin Fizz," a tremendously appealing tale of a solo flight across America in a small plane, and of the fascinating people he encountered, not least himself. That lead me to his other works, which I also enjoyed, leaving me waiting his next.

A new Kisor book has just been published, "Season's Revenge". To my surprise, the book is a crime novel, a most excellent one, and unlike anything else Kisor has done. Still, Kisor, outside of his own writings, is perhaps best known as a book critic of mystery novels.

The book proved a gratifying read. Being a long time fan - as is obvious - of Kisor's work, none the less "Seasons' Revenge" is a treat. Let me be honest. I read few mysteries, save Tony Hillerman, which really are rather what I am told are considered police procedurals rather than mysteries of the classic Agatha Christie style.

Kisor's hero, Deputy Steve Martinez, is a recently hired Lakota Sioux sheriff's deputy in Da UP, Michigan's remote Upper Peninsula to those not from the Midwest. Martinez, raised in upstate New York, is escaping a failed romance and trying to start a new life.

The novel opens with the discovery of a grisly death scene of a local stalwart of the community, killed in a vicious bear attack. Though the death seems to clearly be nothing more than a tragedy of events, Martinez is dissatisfied. Things just don't quite add up. Yet, he really has nothing to go on, nothing to point at.

Keeping his dissatisfaction to himself, Martinez keeps his ears and eyes open as the UP eases from Fall into Winter, largely becoming cut off from the outside world. A developing romance with the local historian proves both satisfying to Martinez (and the reader) as well as filling Martinez in on the background of the community and the players of the story.

The local community, largely Finnish, have still not entirely managed to put the Great Depression and a major community conflict behind them. Kisor brings a fascinating bit of history to light here largely unknown outside the UP. It seems that during the 30's a significant number of UP residents of Finnish descent were invited to emigrate to the then Soviet Republic of Karelia, bringing the technology of modern lumbering with them. A number of men accepted, and in doing so created a considerable amount of rancor among the UP Finns, some supporting them as being men looking for a better life and others reviling them as Communist stooges. The aftermath of this failed gambit leaves people in the UP unreconciled to this day.

The plot is a clever mix of old wounds and modern passions that Martinez uncovers and sorts out in his unofficial and indeed rogue detective work. At the same time, his personal life gets more and more entwined with plot developments. All are deftly wrapped up at the conclusion, leaving the reader well satisfied. Kisor does the reader the favor of actually continuing the book several chapters after the denouement, sorting out the personal details of the protagonists to the reader's considerable pleasure. A nice touch indeed, compared to the usual practice of dumping of the reader prematurely.

I sincerely hope this appealing book is the first of a long series.

    Book Description

The Hundredth Woman is the playful, passionate, and soul-baring story of three gutsy women. Clarissa, a mixed-blooded Cherokee activist, must stop a nuclear dump to save her town. Serena, a cranky multimillionaire and shack-dwelling hermit, has three missions to accomplish before she turns sixty. One is to find the daughter she abandoned at birth—Clarissa. Morgan, spirited and almost wise, is ClarissaÂ's counselor. Her life is good—but not right. In fact, her man-of-the-moment has just turned violent and she has no plan of escape.

The lush North Carolina summer pulses with possibility as the lives of these three women unravel, then unite, in surprising and wondrous ways.

Children, lovers, work, friends, ghosts from the past, and their own overworked emotions tug at their attention.

As an otherworldly foe seeks to destroy them all, the three women face an extraordinary challenge. They must tip the balance in the critical mass needed to usher in—on a global scale—the womanly values of compassion, connectedness, intuition, nurturing, and stewardship of the earth.

The Hundredth Woman is a page-turning adventure, a get-down gab fest, a transcendent vision of womanhood, and an inspirational good time, all at once.

5 out of 5 stars Amazing and Empowering...A Must Read!.......2005-03-16

The Hundredth Woman is an inspiring novel about women finding themselves, connecting with friends and lovers, and embracing the spiritual world. They tap into the strength of all women, present and past, to follow their chosen paths and become the women they are supposed to be. This is an amazing and empowering book that every woman over the age of 13 should read. Throughout the book, author Kate Green weaves many lessons for us all. Lessons many of us know but tend to forget. It's an excellent pathway to claiming our best lives. Bless you, Kate Green, for putting your soul into this. May you be phenomenally rewarded for your efforts and for bringing such an important work to us.

5 out of 5 stars An Important Book for These Times.......2004-09-03

I loved The Hundredth Woman! Weaving women's history from the witch hunting craze in Europe with the lives of three modern women, Kate Green has created an action-packed adventure sure to entertain. But The Hundredth Woman is more than "just" fiction because the world she writes about is our world, the trials and tribulations of the characters are ours as well, and their process of awakening and growth can be ours, too. Kate asks, "What if women hold the key to our future?" By the end of the book, it's clear that we do.

5 out of 5 stars The Feminine Spirit.......2004-08-17

The Hundredth Woman is a celebration of the Feminine Spirit. With sobering insight Kate Green paints a portrait of moral wisdom which empowers and enlightens. It is a journey of discovery that resonates with emotional authenticity. A rich and provocative tapestry that is original and evocative.

Kate is a first rate storyteller and The Hundredth Woman is a novel that inspires and impresses. It is a magnificent statement , a testament to the strength , honor , courage and spirit of women. It is a poignant tale of inexhaustible spirit and the will to triumph over adversity. With remarkable gentleness , honesty and humor Kate has created a supreme masterpiece that embraces the Goddess in us all.

Infinitely compelling and intellectually honest , this is a novel that inspires us to look within. Kates descriptive powers are lyrical , lucid and richly poetic. Her thoughts are overflowing with absolute positivity , conveying to all who read this a work of art in harmony with the soul. The Hundredth Woman is a beautiful expression , tremendous in scope which echoes across the literary landscape like a song for all souls to sing.

I honor what she has accomplished.

Goddess Bless The Hundredth Woman and Goddess Bless us all.

5 out of 5 stars Clearly a book whose time has come!.......2004-08-07

In The Hundredth Woman, Kate Green has masterfully woven the stories of three women whose lives intertwine in an exploration of their feelings, desires, strengths and passions as they come to grips with the true essence of who they are. The book draws you in right from the beginning and it doesn't let go. Far more than just a novel of fiction, Hundredth Woman brings to light the power women have always had and the power that is being positively reclaimed today. I found myself mesmerized by the characters and the story, but far more than that, I found the message exciting, empowering, and impactful on many, many levels of my being. The book is a celebration of women and life. And this `hundredth woman' is sharing it with the other `hundredth women' in her life!

5 out of 5 stars Women discovering their inner strengths.......2004-07-09

In The Hundredth Woman Kate Green has uniquely crafted three goddess characters full of passion, drama, and beauty. They are real-life women enduring real-life battles. Well-written with a clearly defined plot, Kate's novel is much more than a book "just for women." There is no hardcore male bashing -- only hardcore women discovering their inner strengths and how to use them -- powers the author experienced while traveling the world learning from indigenous female spiritual leaders. The story includes women confronting ghosts from the past, women learning how to rebuild their lives, and women trying to save the planet -- all entwined together in this highly spiritual life-changing novel.

In 1985 William Styron fell victim to a crippling and almost suicidal depression, the same illness that took the lives of Randall Jarrell, Primo Levi and Virginia Woolf. That Styron survived his descent into madness is something of a miracle. That he manages to convey its tortuous progression and his eventual recovery with such candor and precision makes Darkness Visible a rare feat of literature, a book that will arouse a shock of recognition even in those readers who have been spared the suffering it describes.

        Book Description

A work of great personal courage and a literary tour de force, this bestseller is Styron's true account of his descent into a crippling and almost suicidal depression. Styron is perhaps the first writer to convey the full terror of depression's psychic landscape, as well as the illuminating path to recovery.

5 out of 5 stars Darkness Visible, only by the light of day.......2007-09-27

Having suffered with, what is now called Rapid Cycling BiPolar I since my earliest memories, the depths of darkness and pain that Mr. Styron so eloquently conveys was something I had not found in another until the reading of this book. I have felt it in his novels and in those of many other writers. I have sensed it in film makers not knowing their particular experience. Birds of a feather I suppose. However reading his own very personal internal experience transported me to a place of strange kindred perception. Not having known the man himself, his expression of that void - that place that transcends flesh, ego, personality, separateness - provided a comfort thus far elusive. Being there, one is alone, and one is reminded of how alone we all are, thereby rendering death a place void of fear. The only existing emotion is pain, excruciating yes, avoidable never. He creates a haven for those of us unfortunate, or fortunate, enough to experience this place. From it springs an understanding one cannot vocalize, yet Styron manages to convey it through the rich, textural and intimate development of his characters. It is an understanding that transcends traditional learning and plummets to depths of what it is to be human, to be alive as two people, one within and one without. His ability to remove and don the mask and his inability to do so gave him the most valuable insight one can have into the nature of being, and not being. A brilliant writer; his pain, a gift of understanding, and his gift to us, to write that pain with such an eloquence that it can transport the reader into the souls of the people to whom he penned flesh and blood.

This is a crucial read for not only for we who know this place, but also for those who love us and exist with us side by side. Their pain, though it cannot comprehend our own, is as exquisite and "real" as our own. It is not only we who need to be understood, but also those who love us. Thank you Rose, for standing next to him, with him. Your gifts to him are also gifts to us all. You are as courageous as he.

        With much Gratitude and Respect,
        Kristina

        4 out of 5 stars eerie..........2007-09-18

lot's of big words throughout this book. i haven't read any other of styron's books, so i wasn't aware of his style. it was very readable, however, and i still took away from it a good sense of clarity. that clarity being that depression is as unexplainable and undescribable as i've always felt it is. having been someone who suffered from the illness for a good part of my life, so severely at one point that i made a serious attemtp to end it, this book was pretty eerie. a lot of his
thoughts mimicked my own. some of his were even more intense (or perhaps it was just a result of his high-quality vocabulary), but still it's
always comforting to know there are others who have gone thru a similiar experience, if you can call it that. this isn't really a book you pass along to another for bedtime reading, but if i knew someone who was coming out of the darkness, or who has already succeeded in doing so, i would recommend it.

        5 out of 5 stars Very nice........2007-09-17

I thought I would'nt get anything out of this book because he's so much older than me but I really enjoyed it a lot. I got a different perspective on depression from someone older.

4 out of 5 stars Am I losing my mind?.......2007-07-14

The book describes the symptoms of depression from the viewpoint of one who has experienced it. It does not attempt to explain the 'why' but rather gives the 'what'. If you want to know what someone suffering from depression feels and thinks then this is the book for you.

5 out of 5 stars Described his pain perfectly.......2007-05-06

I did not read this book. I gave it to my son who suffers from depression. He said it described him perfectly, authenticated his feelings, and gave him a clearer understanding of his own condition - plus offered him hope for getting out of the darkness.

George Foreman is a world boxing champ--and a cookbook author. For his Big Book of Grilling, Barbecue, and Rotisserie, the genial endorser of the widely popular Grilling Machine offers 75 recipes for meat, poultry, fish, vegetables, and more--dishes devised by his coauthor, Barbara Witt. "In this cookbook you will travel with me and visit Europe, Mexico, the Caribbean, Africa, Latin America, and finally home to America," says Foreman. That's a lot of travel, but Witt's accessible recipes are full of big, exciting flavor and should become favorites of outdoor and indoor grillers alike.

Beginning with useful information about grilling equipment--the recipes are tailored to work using rotisseries, open-flame, and indoor and outdoor electric grills--the book then dishes up winners like Kingwood Skirt Steak with Grilled Bananas, Barbecued Spicy Lime and Cilantro Chicken, and Ginger Shrimp with Mango Mayonnaise. A chapter on burgers and pizza offers a particularly innovative assortment of those treats, among them the Open-Face Catfish Burger and grilled pizzas like the knockout (how else to put it?) pie topped with charred red and white onions, prosciutto, and black walnuts. Throughout, the book provides useful tips and nutritional breakdowns for the recipes, which take advantage of the microwave and other timesaving preparation techniques. This is another Foreman winner. --Arthur Boehm

                    Book Description

King of the ring and king of the grill, George Foreman joins forces with chef Barbara Witt to provide all-new dishes for grill and rotisserie cooking. The recipes in this book can be prepared indoors, using an electric or stovetop grill; or outdoors, on an electric, charcoal, or gas-powered barbecue.

Grilling is healthful and quick. If you do a little work in advance, once you fire up the grill, dinner can be ready in a matter of minutes. So dishes like Rib Roast with Rosemary and Roasted-Garlic Wine Sauce, Chicken Breasts with Peanut Sauce, Ginger Honey Duck, and Curried Salmon Steak become easy weeknight dinners instead of party fare.

Foreman and Witt have created delicious recipes for grilled meats, poultry, seafood, vegetables, innovative grilled salads and pasta sauces -- even pizza. Complete with full nutritional information, the recipes reflect an international range of flavors -- Caribbean, Pan-Asian, and Latin -- and provide new twists on all-American favorites. In the recipe introductions and in the vegetable chapter, there are suggestions for side dishes, some of which can be prepared on the grill alongside the main course.

You'll find everything you need to know about equipment; ways to maximize flavor by using seasoning rubs, pastes, marinades, and brines; and there are sources for the best meats and ingredients. While these dishes are full of big flavors, the ingredients can be found in any well-stocked supermarket. Whether you want a quick-fix family meal, a backyard barbecue feast, or an elegant dinner party, you'll find the perfect recipe in George Foreman's Big Book of Grilling, Barbecue, and Rotisserie.

                    3 out of 5 stars home cooking.......2007-01-15

Book was first class- just not for me-not my type of food choices. It is just me at home now and the recipes were not for me- not saying they would not be great- but not for me.

                    3 out of 5 stars Not what I expected.......2007-01-12

I wanted a basic "how to" not a cookbook of exotic dishes.

                    4 out of 5 stars I'm loving this rotisserie.......2006-10-28

I ordered this and actually received this on the next day without paying any shipping and handling. That was amazing! It came fully protected, no problems.

We used it that very night. I had a little difficulty in putting the rotisserie spit back when i placed a chicken on it - but after that it worked well..

We also used the skewers for hot dogs and the kids loved it. Tasted like ballpark dogs from a stadium.

Cleans well - i use al. foil in the drip pan - and taking the back shield off is sometimes difficult, as well as cleaning the front glass, but all in all it is definitely worth the money.

2 out of 5 stars Big Book of Grilling, BBQ and Rotisserie Cookbook.......2005-05-31

Just bought a rotisserie and was hoping to find how to use it and good recipes. Only found about 4 or 5. I would've liken to know different types of meat you could cook in it and for how long you cook it for.

5 out of 5 stars Totally Surprised at how great this book is.......2004-03-23

I got this book on a bargain table at Borders, and probably bought it because it was practically the only cookbook I don't already own. I was SHOCKED at how great it is. I expected simply a book of promotional recipes hocking his grill machines and written by staff writers--but then I read the introduction and wow! It never ocurred to me how influential his early travels as a boxer had been on his palate. The combinations of flavorings and grilled fruits are amazing, pulling fully on his travels through Africa and Asia. And honestly, most of the recipes can be made without the use of a grill or rotisserie' an oven, stovetop and/or broiler will do. Good job, George, write me another one!
