A great story.......2007-09-13
This is an outstanding lost (and found) treasure story. In many ways it reminded me of B. Traven's classic "The Treasure of the Sierra Madre." This is a realistic, well-written, fast-moving adventure novel. And the lost treasure details are excellent and accurate. One reviewer here didn't exactly go for the Inca treasure history. That's a shame, because the history is the backbone of the story.
Highly recommended for anyone looking for a very good yarn - and while this is a great "beach book" it is quite a bit more than that, as well.
Action pulp.......2007-08-12
PLUNDER IN THE SUN's cover seems to tout an action packed adventure involving ancient treasure and it DOES have that. It also, however, has needless and repetitive passages about ancient Inca and how it was destroyed making it seem like you needed history lessons to understand why these guys were going plundering for the treasure. Also seemed to get pretty predictable about halfway through.
I just felt like there had to be better worldly adventure pulp out there begging to be reprinted than this mediocre offering.
PLUNDER OF THE SUN.......2005-06-30
First, let me say that the Hard Case Crime series is excellent. It certainly opens up the opportunity to obtain great hard boiled detective fiction from the past and the present. This book is not really a detective story, it is more of an adventure story with a hero that could have been a hard boiled detective. The formula is simple: a fortune in buried treasure and a bunch of characters that no one should trust. The author seems to want us to learn the Spanish language while we read this book. There are a lot times that he tells what something is and then gives us the Spanish word to go along with it.
Good story. Good pace.
An underrated noir crime-fiction novel brought back from obscurity.......2005-06-25
I am not sure how one goes about the process of having a particular institution declared a national treasure, but I would love to get the ball rolling today for the Hard Case Crime imprint. Over the past several months Hard Case has published a riveting mix of reprinted and original hard-boiled, noir crime fiction in mass market paperback form, drawing readers in with out-of-print titles by familiar names such as Lawrence Block and Erle Stanley Gardner while encouraging others to take a chance on both new and under-appreciated authors and works.
PLUNDER OF THE SUN is one of those works that has fallen into undeserved obscurity, a state that will hopefully be remedied by its new incarnation in the Hard Case Crime catalog. David Dodge was a frequent and fairly prolific writer of hard-boiled fiction from 1940 through 1972. His best-known work, TO CATCH A THIEF, was adapted for film by Alfred Hitchcock. But he was also famous for a series of novels featuring detective and tax expert James "Whit" Whitney. Dodge was also a popular travel writer, and his mystery novels soon became recognized for their exotic backgrounds. Dodge created a second series of mystery novels featuring Al Colby, an American detective and fixer based in South America in general and Chile in particular. PLUNDER IN THE SUN is a Colby novel, and is a stellar example of Dodge's talents as a travel reporter and mystery writer.
At first blush PLUNDER OF THE SUN appears to be a bit of a departure from most of the fare of Hard Case Crime to date. It is more global in scope, taking place in Chile and Peru as opposed to the usual hard-boiled environs of New York or Los Angeles. There is also a bit more at stake here; instead of drugs or a bank heist, it is concerned with smuggling and buried treasure. But all of the other elements that make noir what it is --- deadly situations, treacherous men, beautiful but deadly women --- are here. Dodge transforms Colby, his itinerant soldier of fortune, into a competent stranger in a paradise where the act of turning over a rock can bring either wealth or a sudden and painful death.
PLUNDER OF THE SUN begins with Colby being retained to smuggle a mysterious package from Chile into Peru. It doesn't sound like much of a job; all that Colby has to do is take the package from his erstwhile employer, sail on a ten-day cruise to Peru, and give the package back when they land. By the time the cruise is over, however, Colby's enigmatic employer is dead and he is on the run from at least two gunmen. Even worse, he has been betrayed by two beautiful women. The package that Colby is carrying is worth more money than he can imagine, and incidentally contains the answer to one of history's greatest mysteries.
Colby can trust no one, but he doesn't know this, an element that gives the novel some added twists and turns. Additionally, the people who are trying to separate Colby from his package cannot trust one another; alliances shift and turn, with the only constant being Colby's rough sense of honor and decency. Dodge navigates his reader through a complex plot, keeping a sense of wonder present throughout the proceedings. One cannot read the book without spending at least a few moments wondering how such a work could have gone out of print for so long.
Hopefully the response to PLUNDER OF THE SUN will be such that Hard Case Crime will see fit to reprint in its distinctive format more of Dodge's works. This is a great story, by an under-acknowledged master. Highly recommended.

Another Hard Case Crime winner!.......2005-05-19
Originally published in 1949 and recently reissued by Hard Case Crime, Plunder of the Sun is a story of an ancient Quechua manuscript, long-buried Inca treasure, and greed.
Al Colby, an American living in South America, is hired by an antiques dealer, Alfredo Berrien, to smuggle a small package from Chile to Peru via the ship Talco. Once in Lima, Colby is to turn the package over to Berrien, but something happens to Berrien aboard ship, and Colby must decide what to do with the package. Several other key players know of the manuscript and will stop at nothing to take it from Colby.
Dodge, best known for his novel, To Catch a Thief, wrote three Al Colby books (Plunder of the Sun is the second in the series), but they read well as standalones. This book does a marvelous job describing the Peruvian countryside and its people, and Dodge goes into some detail about the Incas and their destruction at the hands of the Spaniards.

Bone Gnawers are not what I thought they were..........2007-05-31
The book gave me a better scope at what a Bone Gnawer really is, and the character of Carlita is really enjoyable. Not all the werewolves have to be so blue blooded and perfect to be honorable. Carlita proves that while she's an easy-going type of character, fan of the Mc Donalds hamburguer she can also be a noble beast.
It was really a very good book to read.
The Star Gazers was like walking out and lying to get a rest of the pace of the book, with the background of Antonine Teardroop and his peaceful way of thinking calming the nerves of the readers before things get started up again.
A really good read! ;)
Best tribe novels yet.......2004-05-16
This is easily the best white wolf book I've read. Tribe novel: Bone Gnawers is about the young werewolf Carlita, and her new pack's assignment to defeat an evil wyrm creature. It has great imagery, humor, and dialogue, and it tells of the beginning of one of the most important packs in the werewolf series. Tribe novel: Stargazers is about Antonine Teardrop and his discoveries through the umbra. This novel has great description, and it starts off talking about kailindo, the martial art of the garou (though it's kung-fu termonology is inaccurate). This one has more about Carlita and her pack as they help Antonine. This novel proves that the stargazers are the best tribe! :)
Really Pulls Together.......2003-01-17
The characters and plotline in the story really pull together beautifully. The Bone Gnawers half of the book is particularly hilarious, and Stargazers helps pull the myriad characters from the past volumes together as the prophesied characters struggle against the Wyrm and other foes. Definitely my favorite book, I think, as volumes 1, 2, and 3 just get you ready for the setting. The books overall are so intense they'll keep you up all night reading to see what happens next. The books are also very well written, considering that each little tribe mini-novel is written by a different author and the characters stay consistent personality wise.

So disappointed.......2007-10-02
I was so looking forward to this book but found it too vulgar to enjoy.
CoVer Art sPokE tO Me.......2007-06-19
I have to admit - the cover art grabbed my attention. I'm new to knitting and who doesn't like an adult beverage from time to time. I have to agree with a review I read after reading this book - but before I wrote this review...it wasn't exactly what I was expecting if I judged the cover, but was pleasantly surprised! I loved the characters and came to care about all of their story lines.
I was fascinated with the autism story and the little boy took hold of my heart and gave it a BIG tug or two!
I think the only thing I might have had a teeny tiny issue with was her use of the "dash". I have to admit that I never payed attention to the amount that I use it - (like this) - until I read a book that was chalked full of them. I think I understood her usage of them, but found it a little distracting. But, don't let that stop you from reading a really, really great book!
Must read!
In fact, I'm fixing to check out her other book!
e.
I must agree with Evelyn from Ohio.......2007-06-12
I found that this book was only loosely related to the craft of knitting and found the plot and dialogue to be shallow and crass. I also and am avid knitter and no one that I know would relate to the themes in the book. The ending is also lackluster and weak.
Definitely skip this one and read either Kate Jacobs' The Friday Night Knitting Club or Anne Hood's touching book entitled The Knitting Circle.
I am happy that I checked this book out of the the local library rather than purchase it.
Not a lot of knitting, but good nonetheless........2007-04-26
This is the first fictional book I have read in a LONG time on my own. I was hesitant at first, but I was drawn in after a few pages. It's not the best book I have ever read, but I found myself not able to put it down. I read it in about 4 days. I read about 100 pages a night!
I was expecting more knitting in the book, but I am fine that it wasn't a major part of the book. It is a part of the character's lives. When they get together every Sunday for their little group, just the three of them. So I would recommend this book to people who don't even knit.
I would not recommend this book to children or young teens. There's references to sexual acts and defamation. I do not like reading about people's personal lives in detail, even if they are fictional, but it didn't bother me TOO much because the author didn't get too specific and her choice of words were good, in my opinion. Nothing about the actual "act" of sex itself, but the moments leading up (with clothes on).
The book didn't end in the way that I was imagining. There was no abrupt ending or anything. It actually seems like their life goes on. I wanted to know more about their futures, but that's okay. I liked how it ended anyway. I was just sad to have to return it back to the library. I really liked the story and got pretty involved in the way the characters think and act.
I cannot relate to the drinking because I do not drink and I am not irresponsible (like one of the 3 main characters), but the author wrote in such a way that you can believe the situations can happen and that there really are people like that.
The book's really about three 27 year old women who are finding who they really love and how they want to spend the rest of their lives. It's a book about emotional growth as 3 women grow together.
Kathleen is a slob who is finding her independence from her two twin sisters (whom she is a triplet of, but they came out to be identical twins). Sari works at an Austistic clinic who grew up with an austistic brother, meets a guy from high school in the clinic (who used to beat up her brother). Lastly, there's Lucy, who works in a rat lab with two coworkers - James, the highly acredited young scientist (who gets yelled at by people against killing rats), and David, a lab worker.
Skip One.......2007-04-02
If you enjoy Debbie Macomber, Mary Kruger and Maggie Sefton - skip this one. There is nothing in the least little bit funny about getting drunk on a regular basis. The language leaves a great deal to be desired. As an avid knitter and having many friends who knit, none of us would relate in the least to this book. The knitting aspect of it is an aside and drew me in with the title. An extremely disappointing book with shallow characters with almost no redeeming qualities. Sari is by far the more interesting character and the information on children who are autistic is good but the rest of the book is a waste of time - in the language of knitting - skip this one.

Customer Reviews:
Best Book To Improve Drinking Habits!.......2007-07-31
This is the best book I've read about moderate drinking and how to get there.
Most of the time I don't have a problem with alcohol but sometimes it takes
over and I drink too much. I have found the suggestions in this book invaluable,
especially pre-planning my drinking behavior with the tips in the program,
eating while I'm drinking and watching the clock to slow down my drinking.
That's just for starters. Cornett gives lots of tips and also works on your
attitude about alcohol and its importance in your life.
I think this book could change the world and have given it to friends who
drink too much.
Not for hard drinkers.......2007-05-17
The book is well written and includes good guidelines to follow if you are not a serious drinker.
Problem Drinker or Alcoholic? It Doesn't Matter!.......2006-07-04
I don't know if I was a problem drinker or alcoholic. I don't care - I'm not into labels. But I do know I wanted to drink less and become less dependent on alcohol. And 7 Weeks helped me. One message in the book is you've got to take responsibility for your drinking instead of chalking it up to genes or a bad childhood or whatever. Another message is you can change if you want to. And Cornett gives concrete tips to cut down.
Who care if you're a "problem drinker" or "alcoholic"? If you want to drink less and have a healthier relationship with alcohol, 7 Weeks is for you. I'd pay twice the price for this book if I had to do it all over again.
A Winner for Anyone Questioning Their Drinking.......2005-11-30
This book has been a lifesaver for me. For years I enjoyed social drinking without problems, but the last couple of years I've questioned if I was drinking too much. This program showed me how to pace my drinking, how to make a drinking plan in advance before I started drinking(which really worked)and how to stick to my limit fairly easily. It also made alcohol less important to me - a huge step in the right direction to get back on the healthy social drinking path again. I recommend this book to anyone questioning their drinking. It's a straightforward approach to drink less and drink appropriately.
Loved this book!.......2005-08-11
I wish I had discovered this book 10 years ago. It spelled out how to achieve moderate drinking. It was easy to follow and best of all it worked for me! There are only a few books out that cover the subject of changing drinking behavior. One is filled with stats, boring and hard for me to stay interested in. Another one was too general - no specifics to help me manage drinking. 7 Weeks held my interest and gave specific tips to keep alcohol consumption down and to beat problem drinking.

Women under the influence.......2006-07-01
Book was very 'DRY' in the reading. It is informative, but the way that it was written was a bit too much. Author uses long vague descriptions before you finally understand what they are trying to say. Like using 500 words when 10 words would have explained the same thing in a better way.
Where is my books??????.......2006-03-17
I never received this book or two others that I purchased!
Substance Abuse among Women.......2006-03-14
This is a thorough report of scietific research on the differences between men and women and their reactions to the use of tobacco, alcohol and illegal drugs. It is essential reading for anyone needing to understand the topic and those who are caught up in this problem.

Flavorful.......2007-01-24
Many recipes, I enjoy all of the day parts as many good books forget we eat breakfast and lunch at times. Many recipes complex but others simple and full of flavor. No doubt much passion and care from the author in regard to his craft. The forward if people read such things written by another chef is one of the best I have seen and really captures the author and what he is about, well done. Great photos and the chef displays a knack for plating and displaying food he should do a book just on this subject. It is a must book for the culinary libary.
Now that's cooking.......2006-07-09
No food stylist here, real food cooked and shown by a chef who by the photos and the opening of each chapter loves what he does and cooks from the heart. I have many cook books being a fan of food and chefs and those TV chefs pump them out, doubt if they even write them on thier own.
By reading this book, cooking from it I can tell that it is a labor of love from a chef who truly cares, I did not know such top cuisine was served at private clubs as well.
I am use to this with books fom Europe so it is great to see a Amercian chef have so much heart and the ability to ceate good tasting food with flavors that make sense.

So much passion!.......2006-06-26
This chef rocks. I have attended two of his lectures and demos with class mates on cooking and food. He has so much passion and love for what he does. He said to us in his class I cook with water I do walk on water we are here together to share and learn from each other with a simple thing called food. The man is full of talent, love for his craft and this book shows all of his. We love you chef!
Good Cooking.......2006-06-26
This is a fist class cook book. With so many out there, this book has a nice designe, great pictures that show food you want to eat! It even has breakfast and lunch items, not all meals revolve around dinner.
The chef knows his stuff and knows how to harmonize flavors while show creative food that works.
Good cooking Chef
Awesome.......2006-06-26
I am a fan of the man no doubt.
This chef has done much for the profession, gives back and now shares his cuisine at the club he works at. He has made club cuisine come alive and be noticed. I am a chef in a club and Chef Leonard has helped club chefs all over the country.
