Book Description
To Don Raymonde Aprile's children he was a loyal family member, their father's adopted "nephew." To the FBI he was a man who would rather ride his horses than do Mob business. No one knew why Aprile, the last great American Don, had adopted Astorre Viola many years before in Sicily; no one suspected how he had carefully trained him . . . and how, while the Don's children claimed respectable careers in America, Astorre Viola waited for his time to come.
Now his time has arrived. The Don is dead, his murder one bloody act in a drama of ambition and deceit--from the deadly compromises made by an FBI agent to the greed of two crooked NYPD detectives and the frightening plans of a South American mob kingpin. In a collision of enemies and lovers, betrayers and loyal soldiers, Astorre Viola will claim his destiny. Because after all these years, this moment is in his blood. . . .

Mario Puzo spent the last three years of his life writing "Omerta", the final installment in his Mafia saga about power and morality in America. In The Godfather, he introduced us to the Corleones. In The Last Don, he told the wicked tale of the Clericuzio. In "Omerta", Mario Puzo chronicles the affairs of the Apriles, a family on the brink of legitimacy in a world cf criminals.
Don Raymonde Aprile is an old man wily enough to retire gracefully from organized crime after a lifetime of ruthless conquest. Having kept his three children at a distance, they are now respectable members of the establishment: Valerius is an Army colonel who teaches at West Point; Marcantonio is an influential TV network executive; and Nicole is a corporate litigator with a weakness for taking on pro bono cases to fight the death penalty.
To protect them from harm, and to keep an eye on his entree into the legitimate world of international banking, Don Aprile has adopted a "nephew" from Sicily, Astorre Viola, whose previous legal guardian made the unfortunate decision cf committing suicide in the trunk of a car. Astorre is an unlikely enforcer -- a macaroni importer with a fondness for riding stallions and recording Italian ballads with his band.
Don Aprile's retirement is seen as a business opportunity by his last Mafia rival, Timonna Portella. At the same time, it is viewed with suspicion by Kurt Cilke, the FBI's special agent in charge of investigating the Mafia. Cilke has achieved remarkable success in breaking down the bonds between families, cultivating high-ranking sources who in return for federal protection have violated omerta -- Sicilian for "code of silence" -- the vow among men of honor that, until recently, kept them from betraying their secrets to authorities.
As Cilke and the FBI mount their campaign to wipe out the Mafia once and for all, Astorre Viola and the Apriles find themselves in the midst of one last war, a conflict in which it is hard to distinguish who is o

Omerta, the third novel in Mario Puzo's Mafia trilogy, is infinitely better than the third Godfather film, and most movies in fact. Besides colorful characters and snappy dialogue, it's got a knotty, gratifying, just-complex-enough plot and plenty of movie-like scenes. The newly retired Mafioso Don Raymonde Aprile attends his grandson's confirmation at St. Patrick's in New York, handing each kid a gold coin. Long shot: "Brilliant sunshine etched the image of that great cathedral into the streets around it." Medium shot: "The girls in frail cobwebby white lace dresses, the boys [with] traditional red neckties knitted at their throats to ward off the Devil." Close-up: "The first bullet hit the Don square in the forehead. The second bullet tore out his throat."
More crucial than the tersely described violence is the emotional setting: a traditional, loving clan menaced by traditional vendettas. With Don Aprile hit, the family's fate lies in the strong hands of his adopted nephew from Sicily, Astorre. The Don kept his own kids sheltered from the Mafia: one son is an army officer; another is a TV exec; his daughter Nicole (the most developed character of the three) is an ace lawyer who liked to debate the Don on the death penalty. "Mercy is a vice, a pretension to powers we do not have ... an unpardonable offense to the victim," the Don maintained. Astorre, a macaroni importer and affable amateur singer, was secretly trained to carry on the Don's work. Now his job is to show no mercy.
But who did the hit? Was it Kurt Cilke, the morally tormented FBI man who recently jailed most of the Mafia bosses? Or Timmona Portella, the Mob boss Cilke still wants to collar? How about Marriano Rubio, the womanizing, epicurean Peruvian diplomat who wants Nicole in bed--did he also want her papa's head?
If you didn't know Puzo wrote Omerta, it would be no mystery. His marks are all over it: lean prose, a romance with the Old Country, a taste for olives in barrels, a jaunty cynicism ("You cannot send six billionaires to prison," says Cilke's boss. "Not in a democracy"), an affection for characters with flawed hearts, like Rudolfo the $1,500-an-hour sexual massage therapist, or his short-tempered client Aspinella, the one-eyed NYPD detective. The simultaneous courtship of cheery Mafia tramp Rosie by identical hit-man twins Frankie and Stace Sturzo makes you fall in love with them all--and feel a genuine pang when blood proves thicker than eros.
This fitting capstone to Puzo's career is optioned for a film, and Michael Imperioli of TV's The Sopranos narrates the audiocassette version of the novel. But why wait for the movie? Omerta is a big, old-fashioned movie in its own right. --Tim Appelo
Customer Reviews:
Good read, but not on par with his best work.......2007-06-13
Omerta is an entertaining read, but it leaves you wanting for more. Puzo also missed out on some colorful characters that begged to be explored more, like the two corrupt cops, which got maybe 1/10th as much attention as the FBI agent.
I read this book in One sitting........2007-03-10
I remember borrowing this book from my job at a bookstore. I thought I would read a couple pages before going to bed. Turns out I didn't finish till 5am I read the whole book in one sitting no lie. Enjoyed it from beginning to end. Kinda makes me wonder why I haven't read all his books maybe I'm afraid of another all nighter. lol!
Nothing compares with The Godfather: Every bit as good as The Last Don.......2006-12-14
It is only natural that anything that Puzo wrote after The Godfather would be compared with that epic work. But The Godfather is the type of work that is in a class all by itself. Puzo, wisely, does not strain to make subsequent works in the mold of The Godfather hoping to ape that success. It would not work.
That being said, Omerta is every bit as good as The Last Don; a real page turner with plenty of intrigue.
The characters are rich and complicated, the dialogue is crisp; plot and sub-plots keep you engaged, without confusing the reader.
This work of crime fiction was the crowning work to Puzzo's stellar career. Puzzo has an intimate grasp of not just the criminal mind, but also human nature in general.
Don't let reviews that try to compare this work with The Godfather scare you away from an awesome read. I finished the book in 1 1/2 days. You won't be able to put it down.
geez luis.......2006-10-27
this book wasnt as fantastical as i thought it was going to be. I had heard puzo was a good writer so picked it up and got bored about three quaters the way through the first page. Im not saying not to read this "novel" but it might work better as a coffe table...

Book Description
Another mafia novel from the author of The Godfather. This novel aside from colorful characters and snappy dialogue, it's got knotty, gratifying, just-complex-enough plot and plenty of movie-like scenes.

fascinating, dense, and very challenging.......2003-11-28
This is a look at the ways that secrets are maintained in the modern French democracy. It involves corruption, intimidation (legal, employment/career, and physical), and simple standard operating procedure that allows the elite to (apparently literally) get away with murder. The authors refer to "the chokers" (les etouffeurs) who maintain this apparatus that pays them off, employs them, and keeps them in power without too many irritating questions. It is indeed an extremely bleak assessment of modern France as in thrall to an interlocking "nomenclatura" of polticians, bureaucrats, and the press. Anyone who talks is intimidated and crushed - in most cases.
For example, in the mid-1980s, when it became apparent that blood provided to hemophiliacs (to enhance their blood clotting factor) was tainted with the AIDS virus, it was known that the bureaucrat in charge was in cahoots with the blood companies. Together, they had refused to use an available technology to superheat the blood, thereby destroying the virus, for business reasons and simple laziness. The top journalist - of Le Monde - was directly in the pay of this group (for PR services) as a supplement to his income, apparently a standard practice among French journalists that is akin to the "speaking engagements" that some American mega-journalists do. The legal apparatus was afraid to touch the issue, and meanwhile thousands more were inflected via transfusions. Finally, some people spoke and it became one of the biggest scandals of post-war France. This is a truely shocking and horrible story.
Similar stories can be told about Mitterrand's secret second family (housed at taxpayer expense in a chateau), Giscard's diamonds (from the cannabalistic dictator Bokassa), a long-ignored though well known ring of sex abusers of chidren in Provence, and payoff scandals like that of the recent Elf trial. Of course, what the reader wonders is what stories don't get told and what impact it all has on the political process. It is a very ugly picture.
If you are not quite sure what events the above paragraph refers to, you are forewarned about the knowledge level required for this book. Hundreds of recent events are referred to with little explanation - I was educated at one of the top political science schools in Paris and not even I was certain what such phrases as the "Balladurian debacle" should evoke. In the same way, names of media and political personalities are reeled off in such rapid succession that it made my head spin. Thus, you must have read the French press regularly over the last 30 years or so. That limits the audience, to say the least, but it is very very interesting indeed. I gained a completely different perspective on a country I know very well (and love and hate), including how the institutions work and how people manage their careers, often those of individuals that I watched on TV and whose books I read.
That being said, there is a relentless quality about the outrage in this book that is tiring. It is 500 pages of denunciation, laments, and righteous anger. It reads much like a book by Seymour Hersh, which is akin to whipping a subject so hard and long that it is reduced to sludge. Moreover, the title "Omerta" refers to the behavior of the mafia in S Italy, which keeps people silent through both kinship loyalty and naked fear - people can get shot in broad daylight and no one will talk. I think this overdoes it a bit, but that is a subjective judgment.
Recommended warmly for specialists in and lovers of France. It is also very well written.

The best in historical fantasy.......2000-04-07
Frankly, I don't understand how any of Judith Tarr's books can ever go out of print. I own everything of hers that I've been able to find, and I read them all on at least a yearly basis, sometimes even more frequently. The Dagger and The Cross continues the story of Aidan and Morgiana, who met in Alamut. Aidan is a prince from the West, and a Crusader; Morgiana is a Muslim, and a former Assassin. One of Ms. Tarr's most marvelous gifts is the ability to weave basic human conflicts into the fabric of history and fantasy, creating an incredible tapestry of wonder and truth. Aidan and Morgiana's problem, the difficulty of reconciling their enormously different belief systems and moral codes, despite their love for one another, lies at the heart of all relationships. This is historical fantasy par excellence; a book not to be missed.

When this mineral is part of your diet, you are guarding against–and helping to alleviate–health threats such as heart disease, stroke, osteoporosis, diabetes, depression, arthritis, and asthma. But while research continues to reaffirm magnesium’s irreplaceable contribution to good health, many Americans remain dangerously deficient.
In The Miracle of Magnesium, Dr. Carolyn Dean, an authority on this mineral who has used it with dramatic success in her own practice, explains the vital role that magnesium plays in the control of many serious ailments–from painful muscle spasms and bladder problems to traumatic brain injury and complications of pregnancy and childbirth. Customer Reviews:
the best book on health.......2007-09-14
This is one of the most important books on health I have ever read and I have read a lot of them. Very well written and easily understood. This is very important info for modern lifestyle people, find out why we are so sick with unexplainable ailments and how to correct them. Every doctor should read this but they can't make money on it, so they won't. Help yourself and enjoy.
My personal success with this book.......2007-07-19
My mother recommended this book to me after I complained about "wriggling" chest pains near my heart every now and then. Actually, it had been increasing in frequency when we spoke.
The passage in question is found on page 99, specifically Prinzmetal's angina. Since taking magnesium daily these chest pains have completely gone away, for years now. I believe I was magnesium deficient and this book helped to convince of that fact.
Thank you,
Randall Lusson
What Is With The Sellers of This Book?.......2007-05-02
At the time I write this review, this book is not available through Amazon directly, and there are only 2 Amazon partner sellers listed for the book, one selling it for $63 and one for $278. However, if you look at "what others bought," the book appears to have been reprinted under the name "The Magnesium Miracle" (same author), and sells through Amazon for $10.17. Don't get ripped off by sellers who think this book is some rare find.
Miracle book.......2007-02-06
The Miracle of Magnesium is a wonderful book. Magnesium supplementation has been very important to my overall health and well being. This mineral has helped me deal with such symptoms/conditions as muscle weakness, anxiety, low blood sugar, insomnia and asthma.
Magnesium Miracle Reciew.......2006-07-17
Easy to read quick facts about magnesium and health. Helpful topical entries for medical conditions effected by magnesium.

Repeats the same things over and over.......2007-09-13
Not a very good resource on Magnesium. The author repeated the same points over and over and the food lists were minor. They should have included a pull out sheet for the foods that have a lot of magnesium in them.
A must read for everyone who cares about their health.!.......2007-08-28
This is a very well written, easy to understand, explanation of this most critical mineral to the health and well being of the human body. Everyone who cares about their health, needs to read this. I couldn't put it down and have already made improvements in my own health, since reading it. The principal is so simple and so basic and yet so overlooked. We need to start taking responsibility for our own health and the best way to start is by reading this book.
I wish every form of health practitioner read this book .......2007-06-01
This is another book I bought after reading a the previous version from our local library. It is amazing and has really helped us out so much. I use the magnesium products from Joan Schrader at Health and Wisdom and it is rebuilding my health so much in needed ways. It also enabled us to conceive again! Magnesium is directly related to infertility and a host of other health problems that are consistently prescribed for or treated in other ways including by homeopaths and naturopaths because not enough is known about this most vital mineral, magnesium.
It is so very readable and many, many 'ah-hah!' moments will follow as it is read. It is important, as with anything, to not read with any resentments or negativity, but to read in order to discover and learn.
Educational.......2007-03-09
I am impressed with this book. It's easy to read and understand, and I learned a lot about the importance of magnesium and how it helps us to function. I have shared this book with friends and family so they can improve their diets and learn how a magnesium deficiency affects their health. My daughter has NOT had a migraine since she has incorporated this mineral in to her diet. That in itself made the purchase worthwhile.
Highly recommend.
Great, thoroughly referenced book.......2007-03-09
I was already sold on the importance of magnesium. This book was filled with solid references and explanations on the workings on magnesium. I wasn't aware of how many diseases (like asthma) magnesium might be helpful in. The sections about how magnesium is measured were also very informative.

the recipes are easy and really delicious. a nice addition to your baking books collection.
We're Not Worthy.......2007-03-18
Absolutely love this book. I've owned it for years and whenever I need to bring something sweet to some event, this is the book I go to. The Lemon Squares on pages 152/153 are the best I've ever had. Everything in this book is so good and fresh tasting. Nothing is over cooked, or bland or ordinary. I love Peach Crumb Pie and the Very Short Shortbread Cookies.
The frosting recipes in the book is also pretty great.
Delicious recipes!.......2007-01-05
I've baked several recipes from this cookbook and they have all been divine! The cream cheese pound cake has made me "famous" with my family and friends. I bought 5 of the cookbooks to give as gifts this past Christmas.
Southern Woman Makes Cheesecake.......2006-10-11
Judy Rosenberg doesn't leave anything to guess work. Everything that I have made out of this book has been amazingly delicious. So many bakers give complicated instructions and yet still manage to leave something out. Judy is not like that. I have never met her but I feel like I know her after reading her book. She is with you in the kitchen. It is like she is sharing her recipe with somebody she really likes and she really wants it to be good.
Her Cheesecake Ala Rubens has become my signature recipe. I make it with her Pumpkin cheese cake gingersnap crust. People go crazy over this cheesecake. Even before anyone has tasted it the buzz will start with this cake because it is a show-off cake even unadorn. My children have been heartbroken many times at Church because they couldn't get in line fast to get a piece.
Not being from the south, she is almost apologetic offering her Pecan Pie, but it ended my search for a classic recipe. She might not be southern but her Pecan pie is. It is firm, smooth, tall, and proud, versus shallow, sticky, runny and sad. I live in Georgia and I grew up in Virginia and every time I take her pecan pie anywhere women ask me how I made that pie, and want the recipe.
I love this book.
I love this cookbook!.......2006-05-01
I don't know if there is a better way to attest to how good the book is than to say: I have made things in this book for special occasions without testing it first. I know her recipes are that good! I don't make any desserts that the recipe didn't come out of this or the cookie book. I just wish she'd write a third! Everyone loves my baking, and I owe it to Rosie.
