Book Description

A dazzling debut about the power of family and the pain of betrayal set within Manhattan's Fifth Avenue apartments, the opulent mansions of the new Moscow, and the pre-revolutionary palaces of Saint Petersburg.

Sasha Ozerovsky is a young expert in Russian art at Leighton's, an exclusive Manhattan auction house. When a dealer arrives from Moscow with an exquisite 1913 Fabergé figurine, Sasha immediately recognizes a rare masterpiece. But in the high stakes art world, the price of an object is tied to its history. If Sasha can determine for whom the bejeweled piece was made and where it has been hiding for the past century, its value -- and Sasha's career -- will soar.

But as Sasha moves between New York's high society and Russia's new rich, he discovers that the piece once belonged to his family, and he must face questions about their past that he never dared to ask.

Superbly plotted and evoking the elegance of Russia's gilded age, Object of Virtue is an enthralling tale that explores what happens to a family torn between vanity and virtue.

3 out of 5 stars Interesting, but not Mysterious.......2007-02-24

Based on the book jacket description of Nicholas Nicholson's Object of Virtue, I expected a historical fiction with a strong dose of intrigue, "While researching a priceless work of art, a young man stumbles upon mystery and dark family secrets." Sasha works for a high-end auction house in New York City as a Russian art expert specializing in Faberge craftsmanship. Anticipation mounts as Sasha traces the history of a legendary Faberge figurine that a Russian of dubious lineage has brought in to sell. The story alludes to old family feuds, and an unknown cousin associated with the Russian selling the figurine creates controversy, but despite various hints the secrets of the family are never fully revealed. A bit of danger and suspense are introduced as Sasha travels to Moscow to conduct research in the government archives, but you never get the impression he's placing himself in real danger. Nicholson has certainly produced a well written and researched book - my knowledge of Faberge has increased from nothing to a little bit of something as a result of this reading. Object of Virtue is certainly an interesting book, just not quite as mysterious as the jacket makes it out to be.

5 out of 5 stars champagne,caviar,and a shot of vodka.......2006-11-07

This fast paced and scintillating novel is great frothy fun. The mercenary world of New York's auction houses is peopled with Russian emigre aristocrats, New York society hostesses, new Russian billionaires and a shady character or two.Nicholson's look at faberge objects is told with authority as the expert he is.An eye for architecture, fashion, and the haunts of the rich and glamourous is grounded by real charm.Delightful!

3 out of 5 stars A Bit Shallow.......2006-10-31

A nice story with great potentual. The charactor developement is a bit shallow. Sasha is almost unlikeable because of this. The history surrounding it is wonderful, and he places you in the story with his visual discriptions. I would definately read another book by this author. I believe that he will grow and bring his charactors to life. As a showcase for Faberge' and faded opulence, it is a very nice read.

5 out of 5 stars Object of Virtue.......2006-08-26

This is a wonderful book for anyone, especially a serious Russophile. The author keeps you guessing about "who done it" until the very end of the story while weaving a fascinating tale of Old/New Russia. For those Russophiles out there, references are meticulously accurate right down to the type of tea used by the main character. I would highly recommend "Object of Virtue" for every reader.

3 out of 5 stars Object of Virtue.......2006-08-21

I really enjoyed this book. If you like books that have a puzzle or historical references then you'll like it too. I gave it a three because I've read a few others (not by this author) that I have liked more. I did learn a bit about Faberge eggs and other artwork, and it was fun to learn some of the ways in which a person can tell if a work of art is genuine or fake. I would recommend it to anyone who likes art and history.

3 out of 5 stars I've read better........2004-08-10

Well, there isn't much to say with this book. I could read it again, but I don't think I'd want to, and rather put my mind to another Dragonlance novel.

This book starts out with a great beginning, with the Thieves guild of Palanthas being destroyed. It puts an air of mystery on it, and it relates alot with the end of the book. Then it goes into a daring thievery of a rare subsance from this rich guy. But it all goes downhill from there.

Now, let's introduce the ultra-cocky knight, Arach. He knows everything, and I mean EVERYTHING. He knows more than Sherlock Holmes could even dream about. But he is portrayed as a cliche bad guy, the type who is too cocky for his own good and is easily frustrated ebcause he can't solve the simplest of things, even after his display of ingenuity, which was overdone.

After this, this, we have the witty all powerful elf, Cael, who has the best weapon in the world, and nothing can stand against it. Att he beginning, he sees a girl, who instantly falls in love with his "good looks" and ends up kissing him at the end of a chapter. (Wow! Free cheesy romance!) Crook insists on repeatedly flaunting Cael's theiving powers, which gets old after reading it 3 times in the same chapter. And no thief can match him, because he knows how to steal swords, slay monsters, sneak around completely undetected, AND he knows CPR! It's annoying, because you don't see the suspense, and it is implyed that no matter what, nothing is capable of stopping him, even the Shoikan grove, because his staff takes care of that. The close calls are extremely annoying, and they happen too often, with things that he always escapes by some extremely lucky previous events, while everyone else just... dies.

Now, or Alynthia, she is one of the few characters I do like. She is one of those hard to get girls, which its into the cliche lines, but she stays hard to get, and you don't see her getting married and happily ever after at the end of the book. She stays to the guidelines, until, predictably, she turns on the guild. But her personality is overall good, even though she can barely do a thing.

As for the minor characters, they were writted extremely well, but they were minor, and more than hal fof them died, so you're stuck going, "But that was a great character!"

The plot was the thing that was the most dissappointing, however, in the fact that it started out good and just deteriorated when it could have been easily remedied. Up until Cael gets captured, it is quite good, with most things that are completely original and wouldn't be found in other stories. After he gets captured, however, I just wanted to take the book and throw it out a window. It fell into the plotline you'd see in the writing of those steriotypical stories of "This guy knows everything, and can do anything!" where you see his wonderful CPR skills. The plot "twist" is something you could see coming a mile away, and it wasn't even done tastefully. IT ends with the new bad guy dying, and Arach coming after Cael for the nth time, which his overpowered thief skills are thrown in again.

A sidenote: the battles were too short, with Cael just slaughtering the enemy with absolutely no resistance. In fact, the only wound he gets is from is an accident that happened with Alynthia.

3 out of 5 stars A boring series.......2002-10-27

I was almost tempted to give this book 2 stars but I only do that to really, really bad books.

Like the 1st book in the series, this book was too long word wise. Too many useless description, too little interesting plot movement. Unfortunately, this one didn't even had interesting characters like the 1st one.

There's little good to say about this book. There were a few good scenes but not good enough to make the book remotely readable. This series looked & sounded so intriguing I couldn't wait to read it. I'm very disappointed & feel cheated - a feeling I'm not used to when reading DL.

After about 180 pages, I just scanned the rest to get it over with.

1 out of 5 stars Boring.......2002-04-22

This book needed a lot more work before being published. Firstly, the character point of view used is so distant that it is impossible to get any emotional relationship with the characters. Even when they do something interesting, they don't seem to be acting out of any motivation than that the plot needs it.
The writing style is full of cliche.
There are too many mysteries about the main character that are mentioned, then forgetten, the answers to which you can't even guess at. The villians are boring, and heros just peole who are there.
When there is an attempt to create something truly fantastic, it is surrounded by boring charaters, and enshrouded in so much mystery that it just seems silly. All the powers of the staff are stupid, we're supposed to beleive here's this guy and he has the most powerful thing ever made, this thing can put the staff of Magius to shame, but the guy just has, given to him by his Shalafi. Throughout the book were told he's taught how to fight by his shalafi, given the staff by his Shalafi. It's not fantastic writing, just silly, not believable.

And the nonsense that he's Tanin's son. Instead of creating a charater that has an interesting points at all, the guy just claims to be Tanis's son, as if we should belive that (By his age we know that Tanis would have had to cheat on Laurana and I don't accept that) it's not said he's Tanis's son, the character claims it, but whether or not it's true has no impact on the story.
It's just so boring. Sol Stein who has written some amazing books on writing fiction says the job of the writer is to evoke emotion in the reader. At no part of the book is there any attempt to evoke any emotion. Perhaps we are supposed to get wrapped up in the action seens, but that are so contrived.
I only wrote this because I read the book after reading the other reviews. There are so many good books out there, read something written by an accomplished writer. I don't like saying bad things about writters, but Jeff Cook does not seem ready for novel writing, and this book remids me why I stoped reading every dragonlance book out there. Some of it's great, but the rest is just mass produced garbage that's made because TSR know if publish so many dragonlance books, they'll have so many sales.

5 out of 5 stars winner.......2001-03-28

This book just won the Darrell Award for best science fiction, fantasy, or horror for 2000.

4 out of 5 stars An Entertaining Read.......2001-02-11

The Thieves Guild by Jeff Crook details the rise and fall of a great crime network and how the most skilled of thieves survive through the adversity. In the huge metropolis of Palanthas, Cael Ironstaff, son of the revered Tanis Half-Elven, takes up residency as a cutpurse ready to compete for the great treasures of an ancient city. Yet his overwhelming confidence, marvelous skill, and dashing charm can only take him so far...

I liked The Thieves Guild because it gave me an intricate and pleasing image of Palanthas, my favorite city in the world of Dragonlance. Crook describes the social structure and customs in a way as not to bore the reader and in fact, moves the plot very quickly filling it with exciting and meaningful action. The first and final chapters are each slightly separated from the rest of the book and provide a nice acclimation to the plot and closure.

The Thieves Guild is a solid fantasy book with all the major elements of such: fast action, involved plot, and a special characteristic uniqueness marking the work as Crook's own. Like most books of the genre, the middle portion of the plot dips slightly into being boring but this ends quickly. I recommend The Thieves Guild to anyone interested in good, solid, fantasy, especially those keen to the Dragonlance universe.

    4 out of 5 stars IT Professional.......2006-11-26

The blend of fantasy and religion is the best I've read since C.S. Lewis; which makes this very impressive for such a young author. The book ended without the usual resolution which suggests I didn't get it or it is an unfinished work; but the ending did leave me wanting more -- but not necessarily in a positive way. Through most of the book, I was disappointed in the heavy Christian presence but was pleasantly rewarded when threads of Buddhism also started appearing; this is when I realized the author was genius! The book has themes of battle, faith, and love, due to the author's young age, his real world experience in war/human conflict and faith vs. non-believers is weak; on love he is mature beyond is age. I would hope he spends some time getting more life experiences (like Hemingway or London) as he could become an outstanding author. I look forward to this author's next work primarily to see what happens to these characters but also to see how the author matures; that's an unusual feeling.

4 out of 5 stars Has lots of potential.......2006-09-10

For a first time author, this is a really good book. It has elements from many of my favorite Sci-Fi and Fantasy books, and the creativity of Mr. Liaboe is astounding. I hope he has more in the works.

5 out of 5 stars Fast pace gripping read.......2006-09-08

This book is a great moving, fast reading adventure. It is written in a style that holds you to it and causes you to explore the character's thinking at the same time. It brings in some classic life tensions and has you joining with the characters in their struggles.

A prominent M.D. helps us tap the power of the miracle hormone leptin.

Dr. Rosedale's program is the optimal diet for quick weight loss and lifelong health. A diet high in healthy fats eliminates heart disease, hypertension, diabetes, weight gain, and other medical problems associated with "natural" aging. Leptin is a hormone produced by fat cells which tells the brain when to eat, how much to eat, and, most importantly, when to stop eating.

Flipping this "hunger switch" means a diet high in healthy fat and low in carbohydrates, saturated fat, and trans–fatty acids often found in processed foods. It also means "teaching" our bodies to burn fat rather than sugar, leading to a healthier and potentially longer life. Finally -- the ultimate diet for fast, safe weight loss, lifelong health, and longer life, based on more than twenty years of research and the latest findings on appetite and weight. Metabolic specialist Ron Rosedale, M.D., has designed the Rosedale Diet to regulate the powerful hormone leptin, which controls appetite and weight loss by telling the brain when to eat, how much to eat -- and when to stop. New research shows that leptin may be one of the body's most important hunger control mechanisms. Control leptin, and you control your weight.

Most people's leptin levels are out of control, causing them to overeat and to store fat rather than burn it. The only way to flip the ""hunger switch"" back to normal is through a diet high in healthy fats and low in carbohydrates, saturated fat, and trans-fatty acids often found in processed food -- plus just 15 minutes of daily exercise.

Dr. Rosedale's 21-day diet plan is simple: Just select from the many foods on his ""A"" list, including ""healthy-fat"" foods such as avocados, nuts, olives, lobster, crab, shrimp, goat cheese, Cornish game hen, venison, and more. Then gradually add foods from the ""B"" list, such as steak, lamb chops, fruits, beans, and so on. A 28-day menu plan and more than 100 recipes, such as Dilled Salmon and Fresh Asparagus, Gingery Chicken Soup, Lasagna, Black Bean Wrap, Raspberry Mousse Cake, and French Silk Pie, make eating the Rosedale way deliciously easy.

Weight loss is just the beginning. The Rosedale Diet will make you feel satisfied, reduce cravings, and put you in control of your ""sweet tooth."" It can even help eliminate or reduce heart disease, hypertension, diabetes, and other conditions associated with ""natural"" aging, as many of Dr. Rosedale's patients can attest. You'll find inspiring stories from them -- and the power to control your weight and improve your health -- in this groundbreaking book.

5 out of 5 stars Great diet for those who need to understand and remedy food cravings.......2007-07-27

I discovered this diet book through a magazine article a couple of years ago. When I finally got motivated to actually follow the advice of this M.D., it was astounding at how easy it was - the hunger switch is turned off like he says. For those who have had the yo-yo syndrome, here's a diet that actually works and yes, it was always about the hormones!

4 out of 5 stars The Rosedale Diet.......2007-05-06

We are currently on the diet and it seems to be working. However, the book has some conflicting data in it...as far as what you can eat each week. It does have meal plans and menus which are helpful...not all the recipes are usuable (they aren't that good).

                1 out of 5 stars Hopelessly impractical.......2007-04-02

The diet is an Atkins variation, more limiting and restrictive with fists full of supplements to take that he sells. It also comes with the usual dietary myths, i.e. after 6 weeks of no carbs, no sweets, no fruits, no starchy veggies, you'll adjust and be repulsed by the dessert tray and your palate will awaken to the full range of flavors found in celery...... Don't count on it.

The diet leaves you with very very limited choices (spinach and almond salad 5x week?). No question weight loss will follow. I just don't believe anyone with the tremendous willpower to follow this diet would need it. Few people would be satisfied on a permanent diet of limited lean meat and green leafy vegetables.

5 out of 5 stars The best diet for Diabetics bar none!!!!.......2007-01-16

This diet is not at all like the Atkins Diet. In fact, Dr. Rosedale warns against consuming saturated fats and strictly limits bacon, fatty red meats etc. So please don't pay attention to the reviewer who labeled it Atkinlike as they clearly did not read thru the book, let alone give it a fair try. The book does a marvelous job of telling us the pitfalls of consuming a high carbohydrate, high saturated fats and high protein. It is all about the right fats, balancing the hormones insulin and leptin, eating the right amount and kinds of protein and carbohydrates that produces weightloss in those who need it, reduces harmful triglycerides like no medication I have ever been on, lowers insulin to normal levels... in summary, to those of us who have these problems, this diet is no less than a life saver. A year after following this diet, not only have I lost weight, but more importantly I am off Lipitor, my blood sugar has stabilized and I am so grateful to Dr. Rosedale for his hard work and dedication that led to this book. It is a book you need to read, not just leaf thru... yes, there is work involved, purchasing and preparing whole foods, but its your life, isn't it worth it?

                2 out of 5 stars atkinslike.......2007-01-14

Being brief. It is atkin's like. I don't think eating that much fat is good for a person. I never really got into it. Try YOU on a diet. by michael f. roizen and Mehmet oz, it's an amazing diet. It works. I wish I could return the book.

4 out of 5 stars Good introductory book on hypoglycemia.......2007-06-30

This book is a great source if you're looking to learn about hypoglycemia. The author writes from her own experience, and shares some experience from other hypoglycemics. Her overview of the disease and its symptoms is easy to read, and doesn't overload on medical jargon. The book includes a discussion of how hypoglycemia is diagnosed, and gives tips about how to talk with your doctor or health care professional about it. Tips are also included about diet, including some review of often suggested diets for hypoglycemia. Tips are also included in some detail about possibly helpful supplements. The author advocates eliminating sugar from the diet completely, and following a complex carbohydrate & protein based diet. I thought the book was very informative, but found myself wishing for more detail about the diet - specifically regarding those foods that fit the suggested parameters. A helpful read nonetheless.

5 out of 5 stars Terrific Book on Hypoglycemia.......2007-02-19

This is an excellent book on hypoglycemia. It is comprehensive, balanced, and well written. People with hypoglycemia typically abuse sugar. I'm a recovering sugar addict with a genetic tendency toward low blood sugar. Anita's suggestions are helping me get the low blood sugar aspect of sugar addiction under control.

Anita Flegg's book, "Hyperglycemia The Other Sugar Disease" is a timely, must have book that everyone should read.
The author chose to share the knowledge she learned from experts in the field as she is a fellow Hypoglycemic. The book mainly covers chronic Hypoglycemia and how you can control and live with it by making changes in your lifestyle and diet.
The beginning of each chapter showcases a person with the disease and their story. "Hypoglycemia" defines what the disease is, the cause and effect of it and how to recognize the symptoms that may point to a diagnosis.
An informative, useful, step-by-step workbook is included. It gives you a symptom checklist and teaches you how to track your eating habits by using a food journal. You are shown how to change when and what you eat, reduce your sugar intake and find hidden sugars in foods.
This is a well researched book that lists all of Ms. Flegg's sources. She also supplies the list of organizations where a Hypoglycemic can find support groups.
This is a book everyone can benefit from as they take care of their health. A definite help and one you will turn to time after time in your quest for a better life. Congratulations Ms. Flegg for giving the public a definitive book on the disease.

5 out of 5 stars Support Is Sweet.......2007-01-10

If you are wondering why you feel lousy, have mood swings and can't master your cravings for certain foods, this book may hold your answer. I tried for years to figure out if I had a food allergy or some other problem. Even doctors didn't seem to understand my symptoms. What a relief to read Anita Flegg's excellent book about "The Other Sugar Disease". Armed with information I put her suggestions to the test -- and THEY WORKED! It has changed the quality of my life. I wish I had found this book years ago.

4 out of 5 stars Mayra Calvani -- TCM REVIEWS.......2006-12-03

This informative book will be of interest to sufferers of hypoglycemia as well as anybody who is interested in knowing about the disease or suspect they may have it. The author is not a doctor or expert, so the book is more a practical guide that offers general information without being too detailed or technical. That said, the book seems to be well researched, as one can guess from the extended bibliography.

Major topics include what hypoglycemia is, the symptoms, diagnosis, testing and interpretation, the Do's and Don'ts, the use of supplements, among others. Flegg compares various diets like the South Beach Diet, Rosedale, and Atkins and their influences on hypoglycemics.

At the end there's also a helpful workbook to help hypoglycemics keep track of their dietary progress step by step. The information is well organized and structured, the language straight forward, and the style engaging.

If you're new to hypoglycemia, this is the perfect book to begin with before jumping into heavier books. It will give you a general, clear idea of this misunderstood condition that strikes so many people.

                      5 out of 5 stars Southern Italian.......2007-01-19

I gave this cookbook to my husband for Christmas and he loves it. We visited Mandola's Winery just south of Austin, TX, and were so impressed we had dinner at Mandola's restuarant in Austin that evening on our way back home. Both are delightful and are fully reflected in the cookbook showing how you can mesh 2 totally different cultures (Italian and Southern American) in food and have a very tasty mix.

                      4 out of 5 stars great find..........2006-05-07

I generally buy my books for the dessert recipes. This was no exception. It has some dolci that I find interesting and unique. I started with the Lemon Rosemary Pound Cake and it was fabulous. It has a fluffy moist tender crumb that we swooned over. Well worth the price of the book.

I also tried a couple of other dishes and was not impressed...but still know there is a lot of great cooking to do from this book.

5 out of 5 stars Best gumbo I've ever made.......2005-01-24

I have to confess to a huge crush on Damian Mandola, but after making his gumbo, I may be in love. I followed the recipe exactly except for the crab (too much $, so I used 8 oz. of packaged crabment) and I added andouille sausage because my cooking's biggest fan loves it. The time it takes to make the dark roux he says to use is worth it. The recipe is fabulous. I haven't made anything else in the cookbook yet, but the directions are beautifully thorough; the photographs and quotations from the guys are delightful.

3 out of 5 stars Italian-Inspired Creativity in the Kitchen.......2003-03-11

An expansion of Carrabba's Italian Restaurant opened in New Hampshire about six months ago. Sitting down for dinner, I was struck by the authenticity of the food. Thick, spicy sausages were served with strips of colorful peppers and onions, flavored richly with a good, pressed olive oil. I knew that I couldn'g go wrong with the cookbook written by Johnny and Damian Mandola.

This book is accented with full-color photographs. The recipes are organized by course: Appetizers, Soups and Salads, Side Dishes, Entrees, Pasta & Pizza, and Desserts. The book also includes a Foreward, Introduction, Basics, and Techniques.

The recipes are not limited to Italian Cuisine. While you will (of coruse) find recipes for Sicilain-Style Tomatoes, you will also find recipes for Cornbread and even a Trio-Layer Cake.

Each recipe includes a number of servings, ingredients list, step-by-step procedures on how to prepare the recipes, serving suggesions, and quotes from the authors about the origins and tastes of the recipes.
