sophomore slump?.......2007-08-01
I'd rate "Not a Girl Detective" a 3.5. In my opinion, it doesn't quite live up to the standard of "I Dreamed I Married Perry Mason". Since there is no "real" Carolyn Keene, there isn't much of interest there to wrap a plot around so the idea of Nancy Drew collectors is a pretty good one, but the execution in this case is spotty. Many threads were introduced, thinly developed and ultimately just sort of dropped on the side of the road. Mysteries need red herrings to keep the reader guessing, but these felt as though they were disjointed. Perhaps the author intended for there to be more ties linking the story threads and was unsuccessful. Some of the red herrings were more interesting to me than the actual "real" conclusion, so the ending left me a bit foggy. I still like Cece Caruso and her friends and will read the next book hoping that I'll like it as well as I liked the first in the series.
A Fun Read .......2007-03-25
Susan Kandel brings the Nancy Drew collecting world to life in a funny and engrossing mystery set in Southern California. Cece Caruso writes about dead authors and when she's invited to be the keynote speaker at the annual Nancy Drew fan convention in Palm Springs, Cece jumps at the chance. Cece is writing about the corporate authors of the Nancy Drew series, but her real fascination for the biography of Nancy Drew, is with Grace Horton, the young woman who was the model for Nancy Drew in the original book covers. Edgar Edward, world famous Nancy Drew collector, invites Cece to stay in his house for the weekend. Unfortunately, when Cece and her friends Lael and Bridget arrive at the house, they find Edwards behind his Palm Springs house with a bullet in his forehead and his current live-in boyfriend has disappeared. The Palm Springs police are eyeing Cece with suspicion, so Cece feels obligated to find the killer before she becomes the next victim. She has her own ideas about who could have murdered Edgar and why, and she's determined to make her case and get her murderer, just like Nancy Drew did. Man crazy, Lael and Bridget, her two friends, lend support to Cece's investigation along with Cece's boyfriend, detective Peter Gambino. It's evident that Kandal did plenty of research for all the Nancy Drew information in this book, but it doesn't intrude into the crisp narration. The mystery was not easy to figure out, and it galloped along to a satisfying conclusion. I didn't figure it out until the end.
Kendal has a good series going here and I really look forward to reading about the next mystery author that Cece decides to write about.
Not bad..........2007-02-17
While I enjoyed NOT A GIRL DETECTIVE, I did not think it was as good as I DREAMED I MARRIED PERRY MASON. I did enjoy the way the author used the Nancy Drew character throughout the story and it was obvious that she had done a great deal of research on the topic of who "Carolyn Keene" really was. Also, an interesting use of Salvatore Dali. I just didn't think the chapters flowed together wery well. Not a bad effort, but could have been better.
Fun Summer Read.......2006-05-13
This book was captivating from the first page. I wanted to know what Cece was up to in her latest adventure. It also brought back memories of my girlhood when I read Nancy Drew. I could not put the book down or go to sleep till I finished it.
Over-the-top.......2005-08-23
Let me start off by saying I love parody and pastiche. In fact, I actually enjoy some of the Sherlock Holmes pastiche and parodys MORE than Conan Doyle's original stories.
That being said, I have to say I was kind of disappointed in this novel. Cece Caruso is so over-the-top that she isn't a character, she is a caricature and not very believable. The author also depicts Nancy Drew fans much like the over-the-top Trekkies. The writing in general is choppy at best and I could never fully get into the spirit of the book. While there are some good merits, in general I think the author just tried to hard.

new age twaddle.......2007-06-21
I read some of this book, a real study in wishful thinking. One of the reviewers mentioned that the book is 'not new age'. Hmm ... begs the question, what his new age, considering the first page starts off with:
"The great unveiling is approaching, a time when the power structures of the world begin to crumble and people of the heart sing out a new truth. .... [E]ach of you plays a part in bringing forth the new dawn."
If it reads like new age, smells like new age and dances like new age --- it IS new age. In this case, Christian new age.
There is no compelling empirical evidence to suggest that human or global history is on the brink of any significant cultural or biological watershed. If anything it looks like humanity is poised for extinction. And that's not a bad thing.
I really do not understand this desperate urge to save the human race, which has arguably caused more damage to the planet than any other species ever has or ever could. If you want to save the planet, let the human race die off. If you want to save humans and the planet, you have your work cut out for you and even if hundreds of thousands of new-agers contemplate a better future, it is highly unlikely to change the course the human race has set for itself over the last century.
A Really Nice Surprise.......2007-06-04
I began reading this book expecting to find another goddess spirituality book telling us about how we need to go back to the "good old days" when women ruled the world, when we were one with nature in idyllic Roussean bliss, and how the presence of male energy on the planet should be eradicated so that women can create a perfect paradise - just like they once used to.
What I found was something else altogether - a detailed and balanced account of the historical, cultural and philosophical development leading to our current culture. While she uses the metaphor of the chakra system to trace this development, it is perfectly syncronous with Spiral Dynamics and other sophisticated models of human development. In other words, there is a total absence of magical, New Age superstition and a great presence of balance, perspective and wisdom.
The book is a clarion call to action, to understand the context of our emergence, appreciate the gravity of our current situation and take total responsibility for it on the level of our personal lives. This is all done without guilt tripping or demonizing any aspect of our development, while not denying much of its brutality.
Having studied both Ken Wilber's and Don Beck's work, I find this book in perfect alignment and the author another in a growing chorus of voices urging us to evolve at the level of consciousness in service of the entire race.
Elegantly written, full of heart and perspective, this book is a must read for anyone who wants to understand why we're where we're at and what the next step must be.
An Invitation to Kindom........2006-11-08
Waking the Global Heart creates an understandable picture of cultural evolution. More importantly it creates a hope for what humanity can yet become, if we can begin to awaken to what is possible instead of living with what we have come to accept. As a United Methodist pastor, I found Judith's anaylsis of Christian history to be especially helpful for revealing the process of adjusting Christianity to fit political purposes of the Roman Empire. While Judith's summary of this history could not possibly cover all the nuances of that history, her approach reminds us that the heart message Jesus proclaimed and lived was co-opted by the love of power that dominated that time and this. From the perspective of Jesus message of the heart (the power of love), I have long struggled with the use of the word "kingdom"of God to describe Jesus' goal. While Jesus' call is clearly to create a world based on God's love, "kingdom" carries too much of the "love of power" model. I especially appreciated Judith's coining of the word, "kindom" to describe the goal of social evolution. Waking the Global Heart gives us an excellent model as to what the world can be, if we can move past doctrine to discover unity of spirit in the image of the heart chakra. Dana Wimmer
A roadmap for what humanity needs to JUST DO! .......2006-09-24
WAKING THE GLOBAL HEART, will be kept were I can refer to it often. Anodea Judith has touched all the right nerves to awaken humanity's sleeping giant. As J. Krishnamurti put it, to produce "A radical mutation of the mind." She describes the human condition as an adolescent emerging with the crushing awareness of adult choices. Like a teen age girl staring in disbelief at the drug store pregnancy test that signals a personal Tsunami, a 9/11 and a New Orleans, humanity stands in the postmodern era with no MAPS and no consensus. Like a deer frozen in the headlights, we trouble in disbelief at the chaos we see rushing at us with hurricane speed. Anodea's book is a welcome new MAP, and her words ring true as I recognize the truth of her message: "Humanity's Rite of Passage from THE LOVE OF POWER to the POWER OF LOVE." At first glance her three-part index seems to over simplify the world problematique, but the depth of this luminary volume soon changes everything. One realizes, even in the preface, when she describes her love of untangling strings in her mother's kitchen drawer, that Anodea manifested early the tenacity and the patience needed to create this master work. Thank God she had the perseverance and the chutzpah to write this book! It is a handbook for navigating the transformations urgently needed to heal a world in crisis. Anodea draws frequently from some of my favorite visionaries, Fr. Pierre Teilhard de Chardin, Dr. Fritjof Capra, and Ken Wilber. Her depth of understanding spans the ancient wisdom, years of experience as a therapist soothing pains of the soul, and the history of humanity's rise to walk on the moon where we saw island earth as the only home we have. Read it once, read it twice, and then take my advice and simplify your Christmas shopping. Keep it close at hand as you struggle to come of age in the generation needed to save the world from ourselves. Anodea's book reminds me of the famous line from Walt Kelly's cartoon character POGO, "we have met the enemy and he is us." She makes it clear in her passionate hope, "Someday we will be the ancestors that I pray will be remembered with gratitude rather than resentment." and "...the current crisis will call forth global cooperation like nothing ever has before." I pray she is right! If she is it will be because she and thousands like her with compassion, love, and a noble spirit inspired us all to create the world our children's children can love in peace and joy.
The time is NOW for co-hearts in the kin-dom to ACT!.......2006-09-12
Anodea Judith is a noted teacher and author on the subject of the ancient concept of the chakras. The chakras correspond to various energy centers of the human anatomy and map to various levels of consciousness and stages of development.
Anodea has taken the same chakra system and applied it to the history of mankind's social, political, religious, and technological development over the past 30,000 years. She has mapped this history against various chakras chronologically demonstrating man's social evolution from the lowest chakra (Earth) to the highest (Spiritual) chakra.
Ms. Judith's thesis is that humankind is in the process of an evolutionary transformation, presently in a state of adolescence and entering a challenging time - the rite of passage - moving to adulthood, where the "higher" chakras, in particular the Heart chakra, will come to dominate mankind's future evolution of political, social, economic, and spiritual systems.
Her conclusions are unapologetically optimistic in citing that there is in-fact a groundswell of individual action towards the attitudes and behaviors necessary to reverse the chaos and conflict endemic in the world today. Indeed, today's chaos is seen as symptomatic of mankind's adolescence and necessary transition to adulthood.
That the jury is still out as to whether we make this transition before we destroy ourselves and/or the planet's ecosystem is clearly acknowledged, but the conclusions overall are highly optimistic that the long-term outcome will be positive. The rite of passage may be rather unpleasant however!.
The book is eminently readable and the various mappings of the chakras to human history are helpfully summarized in numerous charts and tables.
For me, the first three chapters (part one) and the conclusions in part three were by far the most powerful portions of the text. The actual chronological mapping of human history to the chakras was intriguing and indeed the core of the thesis being advanced. However, the passion and intensity of Anodea's arguments come through loud and clear in the first and third parts.
Regardless of whether one is convinced that the mapping of the chakras to historical time periods is firm evidence of an inevitable path of human evolution or a convenient model for the purposes of advancing the conclusions is, I believe, less critical than the heartfelt plea that it is getting very, very, late in the game and that "we", the human species, have little time to clean up our act.
That a significant "transformation" is about the only thing that will save the human species seems abundantly clear to most interested observers. Whether framed in the model of the chakras and the transformation to "species adulthood" or some other form, the central thesis is really that things had better happen fast. Utilizing the chakras, and in particular the Heart chakra, provides a compelling set of guideposts with regard to the direction and types of changes that must occur.
Now from a, "glass half-full, glass half-empty", perspective one is left wondering whether this book and many others like it, are desperate attempts to see light at the end of the tunnel - where there is none - or whether humanity really has the will to manifest the enormous transformation that the author believes is essential. The analytical model used - the chakras - indicates that it is not only desirable, but an inevitable result of an evolutionary process. Let us hope she is right!
Once again, the "think globally, act locally" idea is presented. This book may greatly assist those who are concerned, but immobilized at present, find the will, energy, and determination to organize and act decisively in order to be a part of the essential transformation.

A great book.......2002-04-07
I have to admit, the beginning was a little boring, forcing me to leave the book behind in favor of the others that I had ordered, but when I got a little bit into it, the book was impossible to put down. I loved it, it had great details and a great plotline with great characters. I give it a four because of the beginning.
This is one to read for a good laugh........2000-04-03
I could not help but laugh when I read this book. Victor Milan wrote this book with a great sense of humor which made it that much more enjoyable for me to read. I request that you read this book, you might like as much as I did.
Good fun.......2000-03-21
In my opinion, this is one of the funniest books I've ever read. Just look at it disconsidering everything you ever read about battletech rules, and it's fine. The book is well written, rich in characters and plots, but it is on the verge of being ridiculous by batlletech combat standards. One single, unarmored person, with a vibroblade as primary weapon, with a whole battlemech BATTALION of worth of kills? I think perhaps the main character was the inpiration to the FWLM unit, the Second Oriente Hussars insignia of a person running after an Atlas with a knife.
This book is boring.......1999-06-19
This book was so boring than i cant finish it
Great Book! Milan writes outstanding Battletech stories........1999-05-04
Milan does a great job in this second book featuring the freewheeling 17th Recon Regiment. Rich in plot (and sub-plots) Milan weaves a compelling story populated with the eccentric and colorful characters of Camacho's Caballeros.
The 17th Recon is unlike any other outfit in or out of the Inner Sphere and Milan's stories require more attention span than some of the one dimensional Battletech books around. But for a good story with some of the best Mech action around you can't beat Hearts of Chaos.

This series of Novels by Gav Thorpe Starts out strong but does not finish well. Heart of Chaos almost seems like Gav gave up and just ended it. This book leaves you feeling cheated out of a good ending. I would suggest Gav's Other books to anyone. However the end of this series reminds me of the end of the Last Chancer's Novels. So if you read Blades and Claws you might as well punish yourself and read Heart of Chaos.

Book Description
In his 20 seasons on ESPN and ABC, Dick Vitale has been synonymous with college basketball. Through his passion and devotion to the game, Vitale has earned an ever-growing following with an enthusiasm for the game, its players and coaches never before seen in television.
Having coached at the high school, collegiate and professional levels. Vitale brings an insider's perspective to each broadcast, and his lifelong relationships with the administrators, coaches and players provide him a wealth of knowledge few can equal.
Behind every "get a TO, baby" and the "slam, jam, bam" resides in Vitale a growing concern for the sport that reels when yet another misguided underclassman announces he's going pro or a new recruiting or academic scandal arises. As much as Vitale is a fan courtside, he's also a champion of the game away from it, spending countless hours lobbying for rules changes or talking with athletic directors about ways to improve the game.
Being so close to the sport, Vitale is infinitely aware of the big-business pressures that affect it today, from the billions of dollars spent by television networks to the controversy surrounding the entrance exam requirements.
And having played and coached basketball, he truly cares about the kids and knows that the success of the sport rides on the shoulders of those student-athletes who proudly wear their school colors into battle.
Here are Vitale's heartfelt thoughts on how to halt the off-court technical fouls of the sport he loves so deeply.
In short, discusses the following:
* clean up gambling * control agents and boosters * keep players in school * reform recruiting * restructure NCAA rules
Customer Reviews:
IT BREAKS MY HEART TOO BABY!!.......2005-01-19
Annotation: Dick Vitale writes an awesome book that comes straight from his heart. It is mainly about the sudden abundance of college basketball players leaving early for the NBA. The worst is when high school kids start skipping college altogether. The book also describes the way that individual boosters are paying athletes to attend their school of choice illegally. It just breaks his heart BABY!
Info about the Author: Dick Vitale joined ESPN during the 1979-80 season; just after the September 1979 launch of the network. Vitale called ESPN's first ever NCAA basketball game in December of 1979. He has announced almost 1,000 games in his career including a few NBA games. He graduated from Seton Hall with a degree in business administration. He coached high school teams until he was an assistant at Rutgers. He got his first college coaching job at the University of Detroit. After 6 years there, he coached the Detroit Pistons for a few seasons and then became an announcer. He currently is in contract with ESPN for college basketball games until 2006.
Evaluation: How can you not love this book? If you appreciate college basketball or any college sport at all you have to love this book. It comes straight from the heart of one of the most prominent men in college sports of all time. Dick Vitale calls out a problem in college sports that is very evident. He has a plan to fix all of this, but it does not seem that anyone is going to do anything at all. If the game of college basketball is not cleaned up, sports fans could lose the most exciting college sport. This would be a shame and Dick Vitale is right, it needs to be cleaned up. Read it to find out all about the game of college basketball and what needs to be done to clean it up and make it successful again.
Maestro of the Hardcourts.......2000-03-02
Dick Vitale's enthusiasm and love for the game shines through in the book Campus Chaos - Why the Game I Love is Breaking My Heart. The book disects the problems currently plaguing today's hardcourt action and shows how far the game has transformed from the one developed by Dr. Naismith. The book step-by-step expounds intelligently and informatively on how the current negative aspects of the game can be remedied, bringing the game back in line with its proud heritage. The book which was recommended to me by a friend, did not disappoint this Hoosier basketball lover. This book is a must read for those that love the game as much as I do and in the words of the immortal Dick Vitale, "This book is a dipsy doo dunkaroo."

Sports medicine.......2006-08-25
Runners, weight lifters, bikers, golfers, and other exercise buffs (I'm a runner) need serious guidance about injury prevention and how to improve your performance. I found this to be a great guide, not from an amateur enthusiast, but from a doctor who has seriously taken on the problem, even beyond the typical exercises I was familiar with from physical therapy over the years. And yes, they told me I'd likely have to do exercises for the rest of my life. And that's what makes this book so handy, you don't have a therpist with you day in and out.
This book is very specific on how to do the exercises, how to progress, and what not to do. The advice is practical and well researched, and very much consistent with everything all the specialists have told me during my decade of back problems .I found the guidance to be in depth, but still accessible to lay person
Exceptional benefits include the exercise alternates; free weights, exercise balls. Given the constraints of travel and gym availability, alternates are needed. Also, the guidance toward good nutrition and "healthy living" is on the mark.
Backsmart book.......2006-08-22
I have had recurring back issues for quite some time (12 years) and have done lenghty research to help aleviate pain and improve performance. With that being said, I found this book to be entirely too basic for me. Much of what's covered are sretches and abdominal and bicep exercises.....very little lower/upper back exercises. If you're an athlete or somebody who's been active consistently, you probably won't find your answers in this book. However, for older or non-exercising individuals, this book has decent basic guidlines and is decent starter information.
Great addition to any training library.......2006-07-07
No matter what type of exercise program you are doing or starting, this book will help you do it better. The pictures really help to get your mind focused on what's happening during specific exercises and everyone seems to agree that is a good thing. Great layout. When you are ready to vary your routine this book can help you by identifying substitute exercises for those you are unable to perform the exercises yet due to back or neck weakness/ pain or simply don't yet have the strength to perform them yet.
You are given many number of different routines to follow, but rather than repeating the same exercises over and over I liked the writer's method of giving me choices of a wide variety and visually pointers throughout numerous exercises that will be the staples of just about any resistance training program. The information on common training injuries - is also indispensable.
Check it out .......2006-07-05
I am reviewing this book - recommending that you check it out - because I believe that the information in it, when combined with some determination - will get you the results you've been after. At least that's what it did for me.
For the novice to the seasoned gym goer, The chapter on Pilates and ABS is something you should very much consider adding to your workout schedule. ESPECIALLY if you are an athlete! Core conditioning and stability (and we're not talking six pac abs) will prevent you from getting injured, regardless of your sport, be it running, boxing, rowing, basketball, tennis, swimming, golfing, everything.
This book will challenge you physically and help get you toward the best shape of your life. His diagrams/cueing/benefits/skill levels are meticulously presented.
Great descriptions.......2006-07-04
This is not only an excellent book for strength training, it also has good guidelines for performing exercises correctly and tips for getting more out of each movement. It goes beyond most similar books in detail and the diagrams are great without being overly complicated.

Waste of Paper.......2007-07-13
I was surprised by the "size" of this book when it arrived. I think it was over-priced based on the contents. I didn't find much information that I will use in this book. It will probably be added to items to be given to charity or my next garage sale.
Cook Book.......2007-05-10
For the most part I was pleased with this book. It had a lot of good ideas for recipes. I just wished it had more. The only downside is that even though it says that it is 96 pages the book is small (hand sized). The author has good ideas (even though they are few because of size). Otherwise a good read for the price.
disappointed.......2006-08-10
I expected a more simplified version of a ccokbook with common ingredients found on a camping trip. This book may be better suited for an adult crowd with gourmet camp food in mind. I should have selected another book geared for families and kids.
Pocket-sized disappointment.......2002-12-05
When I saw this compact book on-line, I was thrilled with the prospect of having a handy PORTABLE cooking book to add to our Boy Scout Troop grub box.
The size is just right, but there are very few recipes that typical boys would make. The cover shows a fish ... and recipes tend to that direction -- more 'elaborate' than most boys are interested in ... or often, have the TIME to make during camping events.
I gave it to the Troop, but don't feel it was as useful as it could have been.
Useless information.......2001-07-30
I was very disappointed in this book. It was way too basic.
