Book Description
As an early winter slices though the old city of Hereford, a body is found in the River Wye, an ancient church is desecrated, and there are signs of a dark ritual on the hill overlooking the city. Meanwhile, there are reports of psychic unrest in the city’s cathedral that speak of an undying evil lying close to the heart of the Church of England. In this second electrifying tale, exorcist Rev. Merrily Watkins must tread in places where an intangible malevolence thrives uncurbed by the forces of law and order.

Merrily, Merrily We Row Along-- Ok I Couldn't resist--- Story and Audio Reveiw.......2007-09-18
Having first met Merrily Watkins, Vicar or Priest in Charge, of Ledwardine in The Wine of Angels (A Merrily Watkins Mystery), the book that introduced the inhabitants of Ledwardine, a village under stress as locals and incomers struggle for control, this book sees her coming to grips with modern church politics and an ancient evil. Meanwhile, her daughter Jane befriends a girl who is newer in school than Jane is and Merrily performs her first deliverance on a dreadful old reprobate who is dying in the hospital.
There is some genuinely scary stuff here-- Merrily's struggles with the aftermath of her encounter with Denzil Joy for instance-- as well as a good mystery. Rickman also introduces another interesting character in the form of a highly placed civil servant who has retired from the world in a very modern way to study mysticism. Also readers might want to know that St. Thomas de Cantilupe, see, The Watkins Dictionary of Saints was a real bishop of Hereford Cathedral and the base of his shrine, which figures prominently in this book, can be seen there to this day-- or on line if you Google for it.
I had one objection to the book and that was to the ending which seemed overly long and drawn out. This is a long dense book which is a pleasure to listen to but it could have used a bit of pruning toward the end.
As for the audio download: The narrator is Emma Powell, is a British actress and voice over artist. Her voice is husky but clear. While her accents are sometimes not easy to place-- or maybe I just lack an ear for the subtler British dialects-- she does a very good job of denoting male and female characters without obvious strain. I did not find her diction to be difficult or mumbling. It might, of course, come down to the quality of the playback equipment-- I use an iPod nanowith a set of after market headphones, JBuds Hi-Fi Noise-Reducing Ear Buds (Black) or a Monster iCarPlay Wireless Plus FM Transmitter/Charger for iPod with my car radio.
Supernatural mystery with strong characters.......2007-09-13
Merrily Watkins, a female vicar of the Church of England, is asked to take over the role of Deliverance Consultant, a position formerly known as Church Exorcist, in this atmospheric supernatural mystery. Merrily has a lot to contend with, including a worldly, but spiritually bankrupt Bishop who just happens to be her boss; and her predecessor, an old man forced out of the job who adamantly believes that Merrily, by virtue of her gender, is incapable of being Church Exorcist. Merrily also has a teenage daughter, Jane. While it is clear the two have a strong bond, Jane also has absolutely no respect for her mother's vocation. In fact, Jane believes the Church is the last place one could go to find genuine spirituality. One of the underlying themes of the book is the declining influence of the Church of England and its struggle to be seen as relevant in today's society.
One of the strengths of "Midwinter of the Spirit" is its characterizations. There are several other compelling and interesting characters I haven't even mentioned. There are also multiple storylines, which the author does a nice job of tying together. I do have to say, though, that if you are looking for chills and thrills, the book is a bit underwhelming in that department. The book builds to what is supposed to be a climactic confrontation in the cathedral, but that scene was a disappointment. I felt it lacked drama when the reader is led to assume something more exciting would happen then actually does. There were also two scenes towards the end of the book which ended in cliffhangers for two of the characters. Then, when those storylines were picked up again the crisis was over and the reader is merely told what occurred rather than having the events described as the characters actually lived them. I don't know if the author just wanted to wrap the book up without taking the time and trouble to actually write the scenes or what, but it was irritating and I felt somewhat cheated. Overall, though, I do recommend "Midwinter of the Spirit," especially for those interested in issues of faith and spirituality in the modern world.
A Sacrifice of Crows.......2004-08-22
Phil Rickman is an author of British horror stories who has the ability to put together a 500-and-some page novel (with small print) without grinding down the reader. He does this without giving way to the temptation to spray everything with gore, and spends time building both interior and exterior structure and characterization. Even so, I approached Midwinter of the Spirit with some trepidation, because the central plot device, a female Episcopalian vicar turned church exorcist sounded a bit too sensationalist to me. Now that I've actually taken the time to read one of the Merrily Watkins stories I can honestly say that this is some of his best work.
Midwinter of the Spirit is the first of the exorcist novels (not counting the one that introduces Merrily as a vicar). After suffering through a visitation of her own, Merrily is offered the position of exorcist by the young bishop of Hereford (in modern times we don't call them exorcists, though - Merrily is a 'deliverance consultant'). After a short course in creatures of the night Merrily is thrust right into the middle of Hereford's occult world, hampered by her predecessor who is a misogynistic curate of the strictest kind. He doesn't hesitate to throw her into a confrontation that is over her head and from that point on we leap from crisis to crisis.
In addition to Merrily's issues within the church, her sixteen-year-old daughter has become determined to try out her own wings. Jane begins to dabble into exactly the kind of spiritualism that Merrily is expected to oppose. Lured into the world of the craft by a new friend, Jane's first steps trigger a series of events that quickly go beyond family spats. And in a third subplot, Moon, a somewhat spooky young archeologist with a history of instability moves into a barn haunted by her own past. She is intent on writing a history of the Neolithic culture that lies beneath modern Hereford. But somehow she finds herself trying to make a connection to her father's suicide - with disastrous results.
The publisher's description calls that the first 'spiritual-procedural' thriller, and that is very much what it is about. Far from being overdosing the reader with huge amounts of ritual magic, Rickman manages a deft mix of magic, the personal lives of some interesting people (Merrily is nothing like what you would expect a vicar to be), and a set of puzzles that read almost like a spy thriller. The blend is surprisingly believable despite a string of sacrifices, psychic events, and magical powers. I was delighted with the work, and am looking forward to the other volumes in the series.
Mysterious, spooky ,fascinating and addictive.......2002-02-05
This book began for me, a fascinating journey through Phil Rickman's writing. The real strength of this book, and Phil Rickman's previous books, is that they stay totally believable, even as they take you on a journey into the depths of spooky rituals, mysterious deaths and dangerously creepy people.
Merrily Watkins is a normal, thirty-something single parent, who also happens to be an Anglican priest and diocesan exorcist. She is at once a believable and vulnerable hero, relying more on her wits than on any supernatural powers.
Exciting, intriguing, fascinating and scary - I loved it!
Intriguing Tale.......2001-07-26
When I first began 'Midwinter of the Spirit' I wasn't sure that I would continue reading it...I found it a little confusing and disjointed. But as the plot opened up I began to become more and more intrigued. Rickman wove corruption, exorcism and spiritism into a great tale, and each of his characters played an important role all the way to the concluding twist. It also made the reader aware that men & women of the cloth are only human after all and vulnerable to the vices of the world.

New Sci Fi Authors - Excellent Read.......2005-10-04
I had a very enjoyable read of this book. It reminded me of the imaginative storyline and sword play of Edgar Rice Burroughs John Carter of Mars series. I found it difficult to believe that it was written by two teenagers. Looking forward to more from the two authors . . . either a continuation of this story and perhaps another imaginative leap into an alternate universe. Highly recommended.

This book is a horrid display of an attempt to copy other genres in literature. What story these days does not speak of fantasy fiction adventures. To start off, the plot in the story was horribly constructed while the character development goes nowhere. I finish the story not knowing who anyone is. I feel as if i were reading a horrible novel in 8th english class being taught by Mrs. Van. I will not be looking forward to any sort of sequel none the less recommened it to anyone of my colleagues. As far as the editing for this poor piece, one might advise the editor to have some knowledge of constructing a decent piece of literature. As a note to the authors of the book, I greatly recommend you stay in school and learn more about writing good literature.

Self-improvement guru Phillip McGraw knows you're looking for "something that melts fat off like sun melts ice," but, he reminds you, "losing weight is not 'quick and easy' and you know it." McGraw, one of Oprah's favorite sidekicks and host of his own television show, promises that you will succeed with his methods, because you will change "from the inside out." McGraw's 7 Keys are sound--not quick. First, you have to understand and face your "personal truth"--what you think about yourself and your weight--and replace toxic messages with positive thoughts. Next, step by step, you learn how to counter emotional eating, change your environment, master impulse eating, choose foods, adopt an exercise habit, and assemble a support circle. Each step is clearly explained and personalized with case studies, fill-in charts, and self-tests. His nutrition plan emphasizes foods with high nutritional yields for few calories, and that cannot be eaten quickly (generally because they're high in fiber), so you're less likely to overeat. McGraw is the author of Life Strategies, Relationship Rescue, and Self Matters. Here he offers his unique, , tell-it-like-it-is, take-no-prisoners style to help you change "what you eat, why you eat, where you eat, when you eat, and how you eat," all in an individualized approach that's bound to be effective. Highly recommended. --Joan Price

Definately have to be a Dr. Phil Fan For this One:.......2007-05-19
I was extremely skeptical of this book before I bought it because frankly I think Dr. Phil is a jackass.
Diet and excersize can be a drastic change for some people and this definately has the ability to work you into a healthier permanent lifestyle if you can see past his rambling and raving. If it were more straight to the point it would probably be a good start because it addresses emotional triggers as well as actual life style change.
If your seriously looking for a change and havent already read previous books about nutrition, diet and excersize I would highly recommend-
"Small Changes, Big Results: A 12-Week Action Plan to a Better Life" by Ellie Krieger It will help you get through a 12 week program that is a realistic start without having to read past Dr. Phils mind babble.
Great Book, Great Service.......2007-05-06
THis book came so much faster than it was supposed to! It was a great book at an AMAZING Price!
IT WORKS!.......2007-04-17
No surprise here --- as usual, Dr. Phil's writing is hard hitting, no nonsense and intelligent. The program works and I'm here to testify! It even works for a woman (myself) over 50! Pamela D. Blair, Author The Next Fifty Years: A Guide for Women at Mid-Life And Beyond
Better Than Expected.......2007-04-02
I'd like to start off by saying I was biased against this guy like many people are. I mean, solving people's mental breakdowns between commercial breaks, who's kidding who? But, I have to admit, this is really a pretty darn good book about weight loss.
Let's start with the first two obvious objections about Dr. Phil's weight loss book. 1) He's fat (at least chubby). 2) He knows nothing about nutrition. The rebuttal to these two objections kind of work together. I'll address them by quoting from the book. "There was an eight year period in my career during which my work focused particularly on people who were 100, 200, 300, or more pounds overweight. . ." So he's had lot of experience with weight control, but mostly (if not only) with people who were "grossly" overweight. In his world, when you compare him to someone 100 pounds overweight, he's thin. You could say that the book is aimed at people who are extremely overweight rather than the type of client I often see, who is about the size of Dr. Phil and wants to go down from there.
I wouldn't say that that makes the book unusable for those who want/need to lose 25 pounds or so. I think the "principals," the basic ideas of the book, still apply. Also, it's interesting to note that, according to the 1999-2000 National Health and Nutrition Survey, about 59 million Americans (31%) are obese, with 64% of Americans (about 120 million) counted as either overweight or obese. [...]A hundred million people is no small market.
Mostly what the book is about is the psychology behind eating. Most people agree that this is no small thing. Often people have a good idea about what they should do to be thinner, but actually doing something about it is the hard part. A lot of people (including me) put Dr. Phil down because he seems to encourage a quick fix, but that's clearly not what he's suggesting in this book. I think this quote from the chapter "Weight Is Managed, Not Cured," will make that clear. "You must go through many years of maintaining your weight loss to get over so many years of staying so heavy. What your weight is five years from now will be a function of how well you actively manage these things from now until then."
I think synopsizing the "seven keys" will give you a good idea of what this book is about.
1) Right Thinking. A lot of really sensible ideas abut self-talk, self esteem, and other internal tricks and attitudes that can help people change their mind about food and exercise.
2) Healing Feelings. A lot like right thinking, but more focused on the emotions that surround food, exercise, and body image.
3) A No-Fail Environment. I really liked this one. Clients often tell me they want to stop eating junk food, and then later confess that their house and cupboards are full of the stuff.
4) Mastery Over Food and Impulse Eating. This chapter contains a lot of really good, practical concepts teaching people to look at how and when they eat.
5) High-Response Cost, High-Yield Nutrition. This chapter is similar to many other diet books, identifying the difference between high caloric, and high nutritive food.
6) Intentional Exercise. This chapter contains some good, common sense reasons to move the body, however not quite enough time or intensity for my taste.
7) Your Circle of Support. I thought this was a really good chapter. This is often overlooked when helping people with weight loss. The basic idea is that you have to gather people around you who will support you in what you're trying to do, and sometimes those who don't will have to go.
So all in all, despite my reservations about Dr. Phil, I'd recommend the book. I don't think it should be the only diet/weight loss book someone who is serious about losing weight should buy, but it is certainly a good one to have around.
Why we overeat.......2007-03-31
This book takes a look at the psychological side of overeating and weight loss, as well as other reasons, such as hormones.

The successful father and son franchise of Dr. Phil and Jay McGraw continues with The Ultimate Weight Solution for Teens. Here, Jay translates the seven keys that made Dad's diet book a mega seller into a smart, supportive teen manifesto for tackling unwanted pounds, body image problems and eating disorders. He uses examples and web postings drawn from his survey with 10,000 teenagers to underline a powerful message: "Weight is not about the size or your Levis or a number on the scale. It's about whether you use food to take care of your body or to abuse it." McGraw's approach is mind over milkshake, skewering the negative thoughts ("I can't have fun if I have to watch what I eat") that keep teens from experiencing "weight freedom." He examines self-defeating filters (denial, approval seeking , perfection, comparison)that distort a healthy approach to weight and also suggests a "peer and parent response plan" to avoid sabotage. He teaches how to scan the environment for eating cues. Even when McGraw rounds up the usual suspects--exercise and a sermon about sugar--he conveys a fresh and relevant message of self-knowledge. The wisdom of McGraw's approach to teen readers is this focus on thoughts and feelings, rather than on the third helping of pizza. --Barbara Mackoff
Book Description
Weight issues are one of the leading causes of teen depression.
Since you are reading the back of this book, I'm guessing that you picked it up because you relate, at least in some way, to some of the following statements:
I can't stand my body!
I don't know how to lose weight!
The other kids always make fun of me and call me fat!
I hate myself!
Well, I have some good news for you. Actually, I have some great news.
By picking up this book, you have taken the first step to deciding to do something about your weight and your self-image. This book will give you the answers to the many problems that you have been facing. And it will give you a plan for dealing with those problems. And I will go through it all with you. Now get psyched!
You are about to begin one of the most life-changing experiences of your life. -- JAY MCGRAW, FROM THE INTRODUCTION
As Jay McGraw says, The Ultimate Weight Solution for Teens is a book that will change lives. Weight issues are one of the leading causes of teen depression, and The Ultimate Weight Solution for Teens is being published at a time when weight is the top issue in so many teens' lives. Inspired by the enormous success of the #1 bestselling The Ultimate Weight Solution by Dr. Phil McGraw, Jay McGraw has written a book that deals with the specific issues teens face when it comes to weight matters. It's hard enough to be a teen, it's even harder to be an overweight teen. No one knows that better than the young people who suffer the teasing and name-calling that seem to resonate daily through their school halls. But what do you do when your friends are scarfing pizza and cheese fries and you're trying to lose weight? With this book, Jay addresses this and other problems in a way that they have never been addressed before -- in a way that actually works! Just as he did in his bestselling books Life Strategies for Teens and Closing the Gap, Jay talks directly to teens and young adults in a way to which they can relate. Jay gets it and he knows how to give it to them straight. The result is a book that can do what teens all over have been looking for -- a way to totally transform their bodies, minds, and lives.
Customer Reviews:
Great book even for adults.......2007-01-12
Out of all the diet books that I have read, I love this the best. I am a 31 year old adult and used this book over dr. phils and lost 15 lbs. Very easy and clear cut well worth adding to the library.
Great book, especially for the appropriate reader........2007-01-08
Prior to reading this book, I had read Dr. Phil's adult counterpart. As an 18-year-old reader, however, I often felt that the book wasn't wholly appropriate for me as it referred to having responsibilities such as a career, kids, bills, etc. It also would include phrases like, "I want the body I had when I was in highschool!" This is obviously not relevant to someone that is still a teenaged student. At the time, I wasn't aware that Jay's book existed, but as soon as I saw it, I decided that I had to buy it.
Although this book is definitely more appropriate for a teenager, I think it is certainly written for a younger teen. Upon first starting the book, I was annoyed by the colloquial tone it used to establish a, "Hey, I'm young too!" type deal. He started the book with a line like, "What's up?" and uses words and phrases like "crap," "bs," "stuff," etc. He also frequently interjects anecdotes about his friends, family, and life experiences, and repeatedly talks about his involvement in school as a law student. Although I do think it's admirable that he is trying to establish a connection with his reader, it is a little over-done.
Aside from this being written for a younger person, it seems also to focus on severely depressed people with low self-esteem. For me, as someone who has never been picked on, has never had an issue with low self-esteem, and has no means to relate to the quotes in the book like, "I hate myself!!!," I found most of these parts boring. There is also an entire chapter devoted to those suffering from anorexia and bulimia that I completely skipped over.
You definitely get over it fast though, and this book was somewhat amusing and as easy read (written on probably a sixth grade level). I was able to read it in two days and found it difficult to put down. My above comments were not at all to criticize the author or discourage someone from reading this, but I would advise an older teenager to perhaps look into other options or even consider reading Dr. Phil's book and deal with the irrelevant parts.
The bottom line, though, is that this book is definitely helpful to anyone of any age. I personally liked the suggestions of ways to distract myself when I want to snack (I now will take a shower, go for a walk, or paint my nails). The nutritional plan is well-organized and easy to follow, and I actually like this chapter more than the one in Dr. Phil's book. There are certain "fluff" keys I think are used only to make the book longer, but the ones that help really do get the job done. I wish the best of luck to anyone embarking upon a weight loss journey; this book will definitely give you the push you need!
Very good information........2004-08-16
This book was filled with a lot of information. Even though i'm not currently sticking to the "program", I found out a lot of information that I could share with others who are trying to get into a healthy life-style. If I ever get sick of being so over-weight, then I would find this book very useful. The only thing it did not do was make me realize how much I need to lose weight. But that isn't the book's fault. It's mine because nobody can get it thru my head that if I don't lose weight, I could have very bad health problems later on.
Great Book.......2004-04-10
Really hit the nail when it comes to helping teenagers cope witht their weight problem. Jay addressess everything from how to have a positive out look on life to ways to start taking control of your weight. I was surprised at how much sense it made to me. It was like this book was written with me in mind. It addressed all the feelings i had towards myself and my weight and made me realized that their more to me than just how much i weighed. This book was surprising well written. Jay is a really talented writer and I thought this was just a knock off of Dr. Phils book, but this book really addressess teens and their issues in a way that is easy to relate to. Well Done.
Awesome Book! Really Helpful!.......2004-02-09
I am 12 years old and 35 pounds overweight. I got this book about 2 months ago. It had alot of great ideas that really worked. I put this book to the test and in the past month i've lost 10 pounds. I reccomend this to teens(or preteens) who have tryed to lose weight with other diets and had no success. Overall, I think this is a wonderful and really helpful book.

Mrs. Rigante and my husband's grandmother were aquaintances in her Brooklyn neighborhood; they lived just a few blocks from one another. Grandma didn't write down a lot of her recipes, so Mrs. Rigante's cookbook is a lifesaver. Their recipes are so similar it's like having a bit of home every time you open up the book. We can't look through it without getting hungry! Every recipe we've tried is excellent, and I love the family anecdotes and pictures. This is a staple for every cookbook collection.
The Best Italian Cookbook you can buy! Period!.......2004-01-08

I grew up in SW Pennsylvania. My paternal grandparents came over on a boat from Italy. As I read this book, it brought back many memories of my childhood. Among these, all the old Italian men pooling their money to buy a boxcar load of grapes from California to make wine. I recommend this to all who'd like to reclaim a little bit of their Italian heritage.
