Classic Maigret.......2007-10-04
I am a long-time fan of Inspector Maigret, having read all of his advetures that I was able to get my hands on. I lived in France in the 1950s but over the years have lost most of my French language skills. I despaired of ever picking them back up until I remembered the deft, spare style of Georges Simenon. Not only am I enjoying the truly delectible story of Maigret in America, I am quickly relearning my lost skills. Kudos to you for making the French-language editions of popular fiction available!

I'm french and this superb novel gave me two impressions on USA :
- On the one hand USA is the country where it's struggle for life (more than in Europe),
- And on the other hand, USA is an incredible source of vitality and creation.
May be these impressions are false, but it's not a problem for me : I never go to the USA and the most important, for me, is that this novel seems to present the truth.

Book Description
Thraxas would rather be anywhere than at the Assemblage of the Sorcerers Guild, but the perpetually indigent private eye badly needs the fee. Business is a bit slow for Thraxas, but he perks up a bit when he learns that the Sorcerers are meeting in the city to decide who should run their outfit.
Thraxas, to quote, was 'as happy as an elf in a tree'. He knew that this would involve mayhem and murder, and as overflow, he was likely to get a job out of the whole situation.

terrific private investigator fantasy .......2005-06-16
In wintry Turai, the Transport Guild hires Thraxas the Investigator to uncover which of the sorcerers is stealing precious dragon scales. Thraxas freezes his butt off hiding at the docks to observe what happens. He captures Rexox in the act and refuses a bribe although the criminal confesses owning senators to do his bidding; all Turai wants is a warm bed by a fire perhaps with a beer to ease his going to sleep.
Deputy Consul Cicerius hires the Investigator as an Observer at the upcoming Sorcerer's Assemblage that gathers to elect a new leader. The city trying to regain its once influential position insists the next chief come from Turai; however the best candidate Lisutaris is addicted to thazis. Named a tribune so he can get inside, Thraxas is to insure Lisutaris is elected. However, the Tribune has a new issue to deal with; an unknown assassin has stealthily begun murdering folks using sinister magic, but the sorcerers are all at a lost as to how, who or why. Thraxas is on the case.
The eighth Thraxas private investigator fantasy is a terrific tale as the hero seems as fresh as ever. This time he "defeats" the daughter of his client in a battle of words, stops a connected thief, embarrassed to be amongst the sorcerers having flunked their entry test years ago, and challenges a silent serial killer. The story line is action-packed and the magical world of Turai seems genuine (a trademark of the series). However, the reason this tale and its predecessors are fun and intelligent is the consistent asides based on observations and conditions from the beer-bellied star.

Martin Scott, Thraxas and the Sorcerors (Orbit, 2001)
What a fantastic idea. Take a hardboiled detective, put him in a swords-and-sorcery setting, and see what happens. Unfortunately, a fantastic idea doesn't always work out, and this particular fantastic idea seems to have hit more than its share of potholes. In fact, not a single fantasy hardboiled detective that's crossed my desk to date has stood the test of time (or even the test of fifty pages).
The most recent of them is Thraxas, the title character in Martin Scott's series of comic novels. Thraxas and the Sorcerors is the fifth novel in the series, but I don't think I lost anything major by not starting with the first book. Actually, I think I saved myself four books of cliché, execrable editing, plot holes, and various and sundry other devices that make this, perhaps, the least interesting and exciting book I've read since I had the misfortune to inflict myself with the pain of Iris Johansen.
Someday, someone will manage to write a great hardboiled fantasy story. And I will happily subject myself to the swine to find the pearl (as I know it will be). Now it's time to move on; I have to keep looking. (zero)

An Ounce of Prevention is Worth a Pound of Cure.......2007-08-28
And "prevention" (of aging and disease) is the underlying message of this makeover program.
The Dr. Roizen (who partnered with Dr. Oz for the successful "You" series of books) provides easy to follow guidelines for doing the things you know you need to do for better health.
This isn't necessarily a book you'll sit down and read cover to cover. It may work better for you if you turn to the chapter that addresses your most pressing concern (weight, smoking, etc.), and start there.
Because the other underlying message is that you have to start SOMEWHERE to get your health under control.
With this book, the plan is laid out for you in easy to understand language. The implementing may not be quite as easy. That part takes determination.
So if you're determined to do something about your health, you'll find what you need here.
(So why 4 stars, not 5? Because, unlike the "You" books, this one has no "cute" illustrations, and it is dense with text. Something that may be off-putting for readers who like their medicine to go down smoothly, and with a touch of humor.)

I was hoping for a good seafood cookbook that I can use, what I got was a seafood cookbook that is more of a picture, coffee table book. Sure the color photos are beautiful, but many of the ingredients are way too exotic. How often have you seen paw-paws for sale? Do you know what they are? Sure, I may be able to go out in the woods of southern Indiana to get this "Indiana banana" when it is in season, but alas, I work full time and get most of my food at a grocery store.

As a beginner seafood cook, I found this book very useful! TONS of pictures throughout, and pics of how to prepare many types of seafood. If you eat gluten and/or diary free there are many recipes one can use in this book. Every recipe I've tried has turned out great, I highly recommend it.
Great Seafood Resource.......2005-05-19
Can any seafood lover have too many great seafood cookbooks? I don't think so! This is one to add to the collection or start one with.
It has all the basics such as how to buy, prepare, from soups to dips to pates to frying to poaching to casseroles to grilling. One can have specialty books on each of these, but here combined in very nice color layout with over 300 pages of wealth of seafood info. The glossary which has color photo os each variety is worth the purchase alone, but don't stop there.
Recipes range from standard fare which are valuable to have including multiple variations of each, e.g. New England Clam Chowder; However, there is even some knockout unique recipes here, e.g. Prawn Burgers with Cocktail Sauce; or "Salmon and Pasta Frittata'.
Other nice features of this are its excellent layout and photos, each recipe has difficulty rating as well as prep and total cooking time and serving listings.
The interested seafood beginner or lover will find much too delight one's tastebuds with in this excellent seafood compendium cookbook.
And at $20, makes a great gift!
Simply the best seafood cookbook ever!.......2005-04-03
This is currently my favorite cookbook and I believe the entire "The Essential .... Cookbook" series is magnificent for beginning cooks and more experienced ones alike.
Pros:
1) Every recipe includes a very high quality photo.
2) Every recipe has a 1 to 3 star rating indicating the difficulty and includes the preparation and total cooking time alone with the total servings.
3) It is very diverse in the recipe styles, from stir fry to southwest to Mediterranean and from soups to grilling to casseroles.
4) It offers a number of brief special feature sections: Seafood sauces, coating & batters, seafood platters, etc.
Cons:
1) If you enjoy this cookbook as much as I do and begin to expand your "The Essential ... Cookbook" collection you will find that many of the recipes are repetitive. For example, The Essential Wok Cookbook and The Essential Seafood Cookbook have some of the same seafood stir fry recipes.
2) There is no nutritional information section.
3) In connection to my earlier comment # 3 in Pros, since it is so diverse, some of the recipes will clearly never make it into my kitchen. Anyone for Garfish with Rice Stuffing? (If you are even considering this, wait until you see the picture!)
I listed the Cons for informational purposes, but I clearly think they are dwarfed by the Pros that I have outlined above. FYI - The Chilli Crab and Tomato Dip on pg. 59 is a definite crowd pleaser!
A BEAUTIFUL AND RICH BOOK NO SEAFOOD LOVER SHOULD MISS.......2003-04-25
I own this book and every time I open it I always get impressed by the amount of work in it.No wonder since this is a book by KONEMANN.All their books are "CREME DE LA CREME"!!!It has virtually hundreds of recipies ,all with beautiful full colour photographs about every living thing in the sea.There are loads of information on techniques and ingredients and the recipies are delicious and diverse.Don't be fooled by the price, there are lots of books costing twice as much as this and they are not even worth looking at.KONEMANN'S books are always underpriced!It's worth buying this book even if you never cook a single recipe from it.The richness and beauty of it alone are worth the price.

The Best Seafood Cookbook in the Best Cookbook Series.......2000-05-05
I have all of the other cookbooks in the Essential Cooking series and each and everyone one of them is the best cookbook for the type of cooking they cover that I have ever read. The Essential Seafood Cookbook is not exception.
I love how the essential cookbooks are laid out in terms of their content and graphical design. The pictures of the dishes, in particular, provide the chef with incentive to actually cook the recipe it depicts.
Best of all, the recipes are easy to follow, work every time and the ingredients are readily available. Best of all the recipes have fantastic flavours without using a whole host of ingredients that, once purchased, are likely to rot on your shelf.
I was looking for a seafood cookbook for a beginner. This cookbook is perfect for me becuase the recipes are so easy to follow. They are also ideal for the more advanced seafood chef because the recipes are for fantastic seafood dishes that one would be happy to purchase of a restaurant menu.

... this attractive cookbook is a real winner as well as a bargain. It's filled with easy to use and scrumptious recipes (I loved the "Tangy Lime-Peppercorn Catfish"), interesting and fun catfish lore, cooking tips, tips for the diet-conscious, you name it. The subject of catfish cooking is thoroughly covered, from Deep South and Cajun/Creole dishes to foreign dishes. What I love the most about this cookbook is that it contains every recipe you will need to cook a complete catfish meal--soups, condiments, main dishes, side dishes, even desserts. Congratulations to the authors on a job well done!

I was searching for quite some time for a seafood cookbook that was simple to follow and had color pictures of the dishes. Finally, I found it. This book even tells you what fish to substitute for another in a recipe. Love it.
