4 out of 5 stars enjoyable read.......2007-09-17

This book works on many levels. It works as a mystery and as a story for anyone who has ever had to meet new in-laws and older friends of their new spouse.

5 out of 5 stars Kansas troubles.......2007-07-13

I enjoyed this book it reels you in as if you are a part of the characters. Definetly recomend the series to all mystery readers.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent!.......2006-01-30

This was my first Benni Harper book and I loved it! I will admit, though, I got to meet a lot of people in my next book since this one didn't have any of the major secondary characters. I love the dynamics of the Benni/Gabe relationship and how real it is!

5 out of 5 stars Kansas, Quilts and Murder.......2002-08-11

Benni Harper and her new husband, Gabe Ortiz leave California for a vacation in Kansas so that Benni can meet Gabe's family and old friends. The experience is stressful for Benni because she knows very little of Gabe's background or former life. As usual, Gabe is not into explaining things to Benni and they are constantly locking horns in between their flirting. Gabe's sister shares Benni's love of quilts and asks for her help in setting up a local quilt show. In the mean time, the murder of a young woman singer named Tyler takes place. She happened to be dating Gabe's old friend Rob and he is a suspect in her death. Tyler was also a runaway wife from the local Amish community and a superb quilter. When Benni sees the last quilt that Tyler made, she discovers some clues that could lead to the identity of the killer.

There's a lot of fascinating "quilt talk" in this book and some interesting facts about the state of Kansas. This is the third book in the Benni Harper series and I'm now committed to reading them all.

5 out of 5 stars Going home is never easy..........2002-06-05

Many people dread their first meeting with their new in-laws, it does not help that Benni and Gabe married after only knowing each other 3 months nor that Benni insists on keeping her last name (that of her dead husband) instead of taking Gabes. Meeting Gabe's family is hard enough, but after the murder of a beautiful young singer, Tyler Brown, Benni finds herself deep in a murder mystery where her husband's best friends are all prime suspects. She and Gabe struggle to find their footing in their marriage which seemed so right in California but under the scrutiny of his family seems ill advised. Discovering Tyler's true background as an Amish wife who has fled the community resulting in banishment from her family is startling. How did her life with the "English" lead to her death? Bennie is thrust into danger as she gets closer and closer to identifying the murderer. Will Gabe be able to protect her? Ms. Fowler's writing is fast paced and the story moves well. I did think there were a few loose ends in the story but nothing that will keep me from reading the rest of the Benni Harper mysteries. They are currently all on the top of my reading list. I love all the characters and enjoy seeing them fleshed out in each of the books, they have depth and multi-layers to them which I really like. Gramma Dove is an absolute hoot!

Border Troubles in Bourbon County Kansas Taken from a history of Bourbon County Kansas Cutlers History of Kansas 1883. 28 page booklet. In 1854 President Franklin Pierce signed a bill that would repeal the Missioui Compromise and organize the Territories of Kansas and Nebraska giving residents the right to determine the question of slavery for themselves. Passions ran high as supporters for both sides of the issue flooded into Kansas hoping to bolster support for their side of the issue. Elections in November of 1854 and March 1855 were fraught with abuse, as thousands of pro-slavery Missourians crossed the border and posing as Kansans forced their way to the voting booth at gunpoint. They threatened and browbeat judges and stuffed ballot boxes, turning the elections into a farce. Abolitionist forces shipped guns and ammunition to their supporters, and thus began what has come to be known as Bleeding Kansas. This report begins with troubles in the spring of 1856.

Dragonlance has always suffered from excessive cuteness and funny. The authors never really seemed able to render their story with the kind of dark and brooding ambiance that the story seemed to beg for.

This graphic novel gives people a chance to fall in love with the story as it was meant to be experienced. It's good, dark stuff, awesomely drawn and lovingly colored in the rich dark colors of well stained wood. It's lovely.

Being one who has never really much cared for Dragonlance, it means a lot for me to find a take on the story I can really get behind and enjoy. Congratulation to the creators, you've got a convert!

In the comic book world it is mostly superpowered characters in tights fighting the forces of evil, but now DDP gives us a breath of fresh air with Dragonlance Chronicles being adapted to comic book form. I really felt attached to the characters, and found it hard to put down. If you like fantasy, you'll like this book.

4 out of 5 stars Good, but not great visuals.......2007-01-21

For the first time we get a glimpse of what the world of Draglance looks like visually. My big fantasy is that one day they make the Chronicles series into a movie series which could be successful considering how well LOTR did. As for this graphic novel, it is a good condensed version of the actual book. It lacks a little bit of the emotion of the book because of this but i still enjoyed it. I didn't really care for how Caramon and a few of the other characters looked since i had a different vision of them, but part of this is due to the artwork lacking consistency at points. At any rate, i look forward to the completion of Dragons of Winter Night!

4 out of 5 stars It's no substitute, but it is a worthy supplement.......2006-09-27

I share the opinion with many others that the Chronicles Trilogy is the defining fantasy event of the 1980's, and as such, I set about to read Devil's Due Publishing's new comic adaptation with more than a little anxiety. Does it live up to Weis and Hickman's original? Could it possibly?

Thankfully, as I sat down to read it I was able to convince myself that it couldn't possibly live up to the novel, simply due to format. A 192 page graphic novel cannot possibly contain the depth of the 400-some-odd page book. It is an impossibility. There simply isn't enough space for the trade to cover everything adequately. This realization led me to understand that I needed to approach the comic as something else entirely, as an alternate presentation of the same story rather than the exact same story. This should be your mindset as you sit down to read the comic adaptation, as the story will be enriched because of it.

Does it live up to Weis and Hickman's novel? In depth of character, no. In depth of story, no. But (I think) most importantly, does it live up to it in spirit? Absolutely.

I was thrilled to see that the spirit of the novels, the heart of the tale and the characters, remained intact. While neither the story or the characters contain the depth of the original, the adventure is still there, as is the wit, the camaraderie, and most importantly, the excitement. Chronicles was the fantasy event of the 80's, not because of stellar penmanship (although it was good), but because it is one of the most engaging reads in modern fantasy. Chronicles is a blast to experience, and so is this comic. It was fun to see all of my old favorites on the page together. I smiled as Flint dives into the water while running from the goblin horde outside Solace, I laughed when Fizban blasts their cage open with a fireball, was touched when Riverwind was brought into the temple a charred and dying mess, and was exhilarated with every word that escaped Raistlin's lips. The spirit of the tale can be felt on each and every page, and that's why it's worthy of your money.

As for the art, my only complaint is lack of consistency. Some panels look beautiful while others look rushed. I was simultaneously in awe of Raistlin's haggard appearance, and equally disgusted by the fact that he looked 100 years old in some frames. Admittedly, this actually makes a little sense considering his character, as the characters in the novels are at the same time in awe of and disgusted by him, but the inconsistencies can be said about the other characters as well. Don't get me wrong, more often than not they are painted beautifully, but there are times when certain characters look a little off. A small complaint, at best.

All in all, the adaptation is about as good as one could expect. Novel-to-comic transfers usually never work as well as one would like, but DDP did an admirable job with this, much better than their Dark Elf Trilogy. If you were a fan of Chronicles, I highly recommend this trade. It's a quick read, one that will have you turning the pages as quickly as you did with the novel. I don't think it's a worthy substitute for the books, but as a supplement, it's wonderful.

5 out of 5 stars my favorite series of all-time.......2006-07-11

I read the Dragonlance Chronicles and Legends as they came out many moons ago. Since then, I have reread them 3 or 4 times. Each time I read them I enjoy them more than the prior times. There is just something about them that makes you really understand and love the characters. I've never felt this attached to characters including the characters of The Fellowship of the Ring. While I do not think the writing is as good as Tolkien, it isn't as bad as some claim. I strongly recommend these books to any fantasy fan.

I greatly appreciate Dr. Fuhrman's book and his willingness to step beyond the drugs and surgeries to show people that there is a better way to cure our modern diseases of affluence - let nature and the natural ability of our bodies help. This book contained a great deal of specific information on all the top killers and how they can not only be prevented but also reversed by stopping what we're did that caused them. It's a modern take on what we knew hundreds of years ago. Amazing. Thank you, Dr. Fuhrman.

This book contains some amazing stories of people who have recovered relatively rapidly from all sorts of serious health problems through fasting. The fasts recommended in this book last 10 days or more, on water only, and under medical supervision. The longer fasts, during which you drink only water, have the most remarkable effects on the body. The medical supervision is recommended particularly if a person is suffering from a serious illness and taking different medications. If you are in reasonably good health and are fasting to cleanse your body, and improve or maintain good health, then you may go on shorter fasts or even on modified fasts, if fasting only on water seems to challenging in the beginning. It is easier if you give your body time to adjust, by first eliminating heavy food, then fasting only on liquids, and then practicing fasting on water only perhaps a couple of days at a time, while monitoring how you are feeling. You may be surprised to discover that as your body adjusts to fasting, the less you eat, the less hungry you feel and that as you develop a habit of fasting, you actually enjoy the process. Cleansing your body, cutting down on food and regular fasting, to the best of your ability, is bound to contribute to better health of your body and of your mind and to a greater level of energy. I generally fast for 5 - 10 days each month, not as often on pure water as on modified fasts (sometimes I drink chamomile tea throughout the fast). Most people who fast (myself included) do not fast under any kind of medical supervision - but again, for people who are taking any kind of medication, medical supervision may be advisable.

This book also provides tips on nutrition and has some helpful food suggestions for people who are suffering from different ailments - e.g. what to eat (and what not to eat), to relatively easily stop migraines even if you've suffered from them for years and nothing else helped before.

5 out of 5 stars Fasting and Eating Healthy is the way to go. Believe it!.......2007-08-13

It works. Just finished a 14 day fast and went raw. I could not believe how much toxins exited my body. It was rough for me almost 12 of the 14 days of fast, but worth the cleaning it did. Lost 19 lbs as well. Feeling better than ever. My diet has also changed because of this book. Will be going on another fast shortly of 21 days. Feel I still need some more work. This book has been a great guide and motivation. At 60 years of age and going onto 61 next month, I feel I might just have a few more years to live even though I have had two heart attacks, a hip replaced and numerous other things that were wrong that have improved. My hats off to DR Fuhrman and this book as well as his other books. By the way, my cholesterol is down to 113 and my bad LDL at 58. Hmmm, might just not have another HT..........yahoooooooooooo!

2 out of 5 stars Not what I was looking for.......2007-07-30

I bought this book on accident with two other purchases, wanted a different title, but I read this because I have been sick and wanted to see what fasting could do. I was shocked with how long Dr. Fuhrman suggests fasting, although to his credit it is always recommended to be under a doctors supervision. If you are sick and at wits end, it may be worth looking at, but it is highly involved and must be with doctors supervision. I love Dr. Fuhrman's other nutrition books, however, and think he is fantastic overall.

5 out of 5 stars Best Book on Pure Fasting.......2007-05-18

I am a clinical psychologist and the author of a book on dieting.
This is not Fuhram's diet book- "Eat to Live" Some reviews posted here are confusing the two. This is his earlier book about NOT eating anything at all for prolonged periods- how to do it and what happens to your body as a result.

This is a terrific book, overflowing with medical information and how to do it advice. It contains far more specific information on pure fasting (water only) than than any other book I have seen. My only criticism is the binding is weak and my copies keep falling apart from constant use.
I just finished a 7 day unsupervised fast. For anything longer Fuhrman advises you to partner up with your personal physican.

                    PS-
Recent evidence (may 2007) suggests that alternative days of eating and
not eating lowers total caloric consumption and body weight in animals
The resulting caloric restriction extends their life span.

James Beard Award winner Ed Giobbis passion for fresh, seasonal fare, lovingly prepared, was nourished in a family to whom food was a sacred pleasure. Craig Claiborne, the late New York Times food critic, said, Some of the most memorable meals of my life have been taken in Eds kitchen. Now, 30 years after Giobbis first cookbook, Italian Family Cooking, became an instant classic, he and his daughter, Eugenia Bone, have produced a wonderful companion volume on the art of preparing fabulous seasonal meals. Taking as inspiration the Italian countryside in Liguria where the Giobbi family has its roots, Italian Family Dining will show the reader how to combine dishes to put together unforgettable spring, summer, fall, and winter repasts. Scrambled Eggs with Scallops and Morels, Mesclun Salad, and Strawberry Flan make a delicious quick spring meal, while Grilled Duck Breast, Warm Beet and Potato Salad, and Sliced Pears with Cheese combine spectacularly for a fast fall dinner. 5 out of 5 stars Fabulous recipes for Italian cuisine lovers with adventurous palates.......2005-11-26

The first thing that struck me about this book is how beautifully designed it is. It's quite substantial, a good size without being unweildy. It is printed on good-quality cream colored paper with dark green ink, and nearly every page features hand-drawn illustrations. However, the proof is in the recipes.

The premise of this book is that "Italian meals are structured in a way that keeps family and friends at the table." Italians sit down together to eat; a custom that is rapidly becoming obsolete in our busy American lifestyle. Viewed that way, cuisine because one of the most important ways to spend quality time with your family. The book is in itself a family affair, a father-daughter collaboration.

Italians acknowledge that food tastes best when prepared with fresh, seasonal ingredients and to that end the book is structured around the four seasons, featuring recipes and menus for spring, summer, fall and winter. It also features special recipes and menus for the major holidays of each season. There are many other menus build around themes such as "A Quiet Fall Dinner," "A Simple Summer Dinner for Company," or "A Sexy Winter Dinner."

The recipes are fabulous, although I was challenged by many of the ingredients. A good many of the recipes called for ingredients I simply cannot get at my local supermarket, such as tripe, fresh morels, onion blossoms, cardoons, puntarelle or cranberry beans. Some of these things I have never even heard of before! However, adverturous palates with access to gourmet food stores and farmers' markets will delight in the recipes that will allow them to make use of the variety that is available to them. There were enough recipes that didn't call for more exotic ingredients that I didn't have any trouble putting this book to good use. One thing is for certain, this is no mere book listing different ways to prepare pasta!

Some of the recipes in the book are: Leek and Chestnut Soup, Butternut Squash and Rice Soup, Farfalle with Green Tomatoes, Eggplant Rolls, Chicken with Lobster, Duck Baked in Salt, Linguine with Blue Crab Sauce, Spaghettini with Maine Shrimp, Risotto with Crabmeat, Parchment-Wrapped Sausage with Fennel and Onions, Orange-Clove Souffle, Pannettone Bread Pudding, Lemon Sorbet with Spumante, Jaques Pepin's Rhubarb Galette, Strawberry-Rhubarb Coffee Cake.

Adventurous chefs wanting to try something new, healthy, and at the same time homey in a uniquely Italian way will delight in exploring this excellent cookbook.

The statistics for things like heart disease are significantly lower in Italy than they are in the United States. This comes as a surprise since the general concept we have of Italian food is that it is high on foods that we don't normally consider healthy.

This book, on the other hand, in on the foods that Italian families have on a daily basis. It features fresh seasonal vegetables, small but reasonably sized portions and only on special occasions a light desert. There's a lot of fish. Where oil is used, it's olive oil. And surprisingly, these dishes are easy and fast to prepare. The Italian mother is busy also. She wants things that don're require her to spend every afternoon in the kitchen.

Ed Giobbi is a James Beard Award winner as a culinary professional. He worked on this book with his daughter Eugenia Giobbi Bone and in addition to the recipies shares warm family memories and a philosophy of good times together.
