One of the sweetest surprises of the recent Jane Austen revival has been the exquisite Jane Austen mystery series begun by Stephanie Barron's Jane and the Unpleasantness at Scargrave Manor. Fans of Jane Austen will appreciate the detailed and stylistic sensitivity of Barron's sequel. When a storm forces Jane to take shelter at the home of Geoffrey Sidmouth, she uncovers a mystery surrounding her host's character and a powerful romantic attraction as well. But this is Austen on the case, and you can count on propriety at every turn. Jane's ear for gossip and her careful manners make her a super sleuth in this romantic mystery full of Victoriana and literary charm.

Book Description

For everyone who loves Jane Austen...the second tantalizing mystery in a new series that transforms the beloved author into a dazzling sleuth!

Jane and her family are looking forward to a peaceful holiday in the seaside village of Lyme Regis. Yet on the outskirts of town an overturned carriage forces the shaken travelers to take refuge at a nearby manor house. And it is there that Jane meets the darkly forbidding yet strangely attractive Mr. Geoffrey Sidmouth. What murky secrets does the brooding Mr. Sidmouth seek to hide? Jane suspects the worst—but her attention is swiftly diverted when a man is discovered hanged from a makeshift gibbet by the sea. The worthies of Lyme are certain his death is the work of "the Reverend," the ringleader of the midnight smuggling trade whose identity is the town's paramount mystery. Now, it falls to Jane to entrap and expose the notorious Reverend...even if the evidence points to the last person on earth she wants to suspect...a man who already may have won her heart.

4 out of 5 stars Two of my favourite things.......2007-03-14

I love mysteries and Jane Austen books - so this series was a delightful find. It's a quick and enjoyable read. You almost believe that these events happened, and you'll find yourself rooting for Jane.

5 out of 5 stars The best Jane Austen mystery so far.......2007-02-19

Not only did this book offer tingling suspense, but it provided lots of information about Lyme, England, Regency mores, and early Free Trade. Stephanie Baron is remarkable in her ability to project Austen's personality as I know it into these mysteries. During my reading of the book, I "solved" the identity of the Reverend with every male character in the book and yet never considered the actual male who had that title. This mystery was thrilling and to end the book was bittersweet.

5 out of 5 stars Better than the first!.......2007-01-10

I was somewhat reluctant to read the Jane Austen mysteries at first, fearing the stories would be poorly written as some Austen sequels are. But I was pleasantly surprised with the first Jane and the Unpleasantness at Scargrave Manor. I liked the first well enough to indulge in reading this book, the second in the series - this one surpassed the original. More tension, more questions as to who is friend and who is foe, a little bit of romance, and the surprising twist at the end of who is the enemy and the aid of friends from the past. All makes for a wonderful book, a delightful mystery from beginning to end.

4 out of 5 stars 4.5 good solid stars from me.......2006-08-12

When I read the first Jane Austen Mystery (Jane and the Unpleasantness at Scargrave Manor) I knew that I had found a series which would keep me interested and reading as long as the author continued writing. I liked this second installment of this series and actually prefer to rate it a 4.5 star book.

The writing is still very well done and it must be quite a challenge for this author to block out the modern day style of speech and produce readable prose from another time period. Unfortunately, because the speech patterns were so very different during Jane Austen's lifetime some of the sentences in these books just go on and on and on. I understand that it is realistic, but I also know that I found myself feeling that perhaps Ms Barron could have shortened up some of the sentence structure. Often it seemed forced and did not flow naturally. Ms Barron is not Jane Austen. I'll bet she even knows this without any of us telling her. What she is though is a very talented writer and I greatly admire and appreciate her willingness to tackle something as difficult as these books to give so many people so much pleasure. Having said that, I will have to admit that the novel bogged down in the middle for me. Ms Barron had so very much going on in this book with so many characters and they all had to be kept fresh and moving along toward a conclusion. I had a choice of three villians. One Jane became romantically attracted to. One died. Guess what, tag you're it! The bad guy was the only one left. I really never believed that Jane would have been attracted to a murdering smuggler, therefore, I actually only had two villians to choose between.

I don't think I have ever read a book where so many people were so wet and cold so often as in this book. (We are in the midst of a very dry summer and I found myself distracted by thoughts that I coveted some of that stormy, wet, cool weather!) It really did make me wonder how they went about drying their clothes. How long did it take a wool cloak to dry out? Lots of things distracted me from being totally concentrated on the book and especially the mystery.

There seems to be a very even split among reviews as to whether this second book is stronger or weaker than others in the series. For me, I vote weaker. I still loved it but I was easily distracted and very often wanted it to move along at a faster pace. I will be reading all the books and highly recommend that anyone even vaguely interested in Austen or her contemporaries do the same.

3 out of 5 stars Rather Ponderous.......2004-07-09

The author is still struggling with the right touch of lightness Ms Austen stroked over her characters. The mystery is too slowly revealed as well.

5 out of 5 stars Well written and very engrossing.......2006-01-09

This book collects a fine, five-issue mini-series that gives Doc Ock his most in-depth origin story yet. Going back to Otto Octavius's preschool days, the first chapter shows him as a pudgy egghead, tormented by cruel kids and big bullies all the way through high school. A side story about an abusive, insensitive ogre of a father rings a bit false, but otherwise the lengthy comparison between Ock's miserable school years and Peter Parker's is an interesting touch.

Mainly it's the quality of the writing and artwork that stand out here; this is a very wordy, yet totally engrossing story, well complimented by Kaare Andrews' fine, fluid artwork. I was glued to this book from start to finish, and thought it was an excellent addition to the ongoing Spider-man saga. Recommended!

5 out of 5 stars The best Doc Ock mini-series from Marvel's summer of '04.......2005-04-22

Last year when "Spider-Man 2" was due in movie theaters the film was set up by every Marvel Spider-Man comic book when Doctor Octopus showed up as the villain. If that was not enough publicity for the film there were several mini-series published as well, of which "Spider-Man/Doctor Octopus: Year One" was the best of the bunch. The advantage that this five-part story by writer Zeb Well sand artist Kaare Andrews had over the others is that it focuses much more on Doctor Octopus. In fact, as you can guess from the title, this is essentially a retelling of the origin of Doctor Octopus.

The original origin of the character in "Amazing Spider-Man" #3 was that Otto Octavius was a brilliant scientist ("atomic genius") who designed his mechanical arms to allow him to work safely with radiation. But an explosion bound his arms to his body and affected his brand, turning the scientist bitter. In Stan Lee and Steve Ditko's story Octavius only has a pair of thought balloons before the explosion and the indications are that he was a brilliant atomic scientist that everyone admired. But in "Spider-Man/Doctor Octopus: Year One" the accident does not come until the end of the second issue.

Looking back before that fatal moment Wells and Andrews tell the story of a young Otto Octavius who was already deeply disturbed. He is a smart little boy who is tormented by the other kids and a great disappointment to his sadistic father. Fortunately, even as a little boy Otto knows something about acid, which explains why he would love science. In this story Otto is picked on his entire life and when he and a young Peter Parker have a chance encounter it is clear despite their common problem of having people break their glasses they are destined to go in different directions.

It also turns out that his over protective mother has done more harm than his abusive father, which is proven when she attacks her son's feelings for his young assistant, Mary Alice Anders. When Otto picks his relationship with his mother and his work over his love for Mary, he breaks her heart and literally seals his fate. Confronted with his mother's hypocrisy, Otto is not in his right mind when he gives a demonstration of his four-armed cybernetic apparatus and Doctor Octopus is born. What emerges is Otto's ego unleashed and when he breaks free from his holding cell he almost kills a young Spider-Man. Haunted by nuclear-tinged visions, Doctor Octopus believes he is being called by his creator and decides a nuclear power plant in Queens is where he can set the power of the atom free. Standing in his way, of course, will be Spider-Man.

Overall this story really is about the inner struggles of Otto Octavius and his transference of his obsession about atomic power to his super-powered opponent (the same way he thinks a nuclear reactor is his "mother"). Spider-Man is barely a minor character in this story, but that is appropriate for tale being told. Likewise the artwork by Andrews is extremely effective because this is not a Spider-Man story so it should not look like one. Andrews's artwork is better suited for a horror story than a superhero gig (I kept think Mike Mignola's "Hellboy" more than any other artistic point of reference). Granted, this version of Otto Octavius is totally whacked from page one, which makes it both over the top and inconsistent with how the character is usually portrayed in Spider-Man comic books, but Wells and Andrews do such a good job of running with it that you just go along for the ride and enjoy.

This is a fairly good book with a very good selection of supplements and a decent amount of info. for each one listed. My only complaint is that the index is hard to use, in other words,, if you are looking up a certain thing, you may have to look at several different names for it,and sometimes have to thumb through the index under different headings. The big expensive hardcover book found in health stores is essentially the same thing, only this softcover version is significantly cheaper, a plus for the paperback version.

In the past I have purchased the first 2 volumes and they were fantastic. This one left me cold. It was small in size and was not as easily readable. Locating different herbs was difficult and frustrating. I much preferred the layout in Volumes 1 and 2.

Prescription for Nutritional Healing should be a staple in every home. These are the same reference books they use in the health food stores to help you choose what supplements to take for your particular ailment. Everything is listed by symptom which makes it very user friendly. There are listings for critical "must haves" and also some options for things that could be useful. I've used it many times and have found it to be the authority on wellness that might save you a trip or two to the doctor. I can't live without it.

I owe this book for four years and loved everything in this book before I run in a trouble. I have followed this book advise for bowel cleansing and injured my colon by using a prescription for cleansing enema, listed in this book. I think author never tried this recommendation on him self and never used it on his patients. Otherwise he would never suggest to other people use this enema recipe and even more on weekly basis. I done it only once and cannot recover already for three months and probably never will. I looked for information on the Web unfortunately after I done this procedure and every piece of information I found says about straining your colon with this procedure. I cannot believe such a prominent doctor would not know that. This make me think this book is dangerous for public.

In chapter about "fasting and cleansing" authors of this book suggests do cleansing enema with lemon juice every week. I did only once with much less strong concentarion of lemon juice. I have strained my colon and muscles so bad, I am not sure I ever recover.

A must have compact version of the "big book" to take with you to the health food store, the supermarket or your health care provider. Quite a lot of valuable information on vitamins, minerals and herbal supplements is contained in so small a book. Well worth every penny.

                Book Description

Microwave ovens are in over 90% of American homes--but too often relegated to the role of re-heater, defroster, and popcorn maker. No more. Victoria Wise and Susanna Hoffman, authors of The Well-Filled Tortilla with over 200,000 copies in print, spent three years exploring the possibilities of the microwave, and they've created a collection of 350 innovative, flavorful, at times whimsical recipes that take full advantage of the box and what it does best. And what the microwave does best, as the authors have discovered, is pretty terrific. Perfectly cooked fish. Creamy no-stir risottos. Luscious sauces for pasta. Crunchy pickles and relishes in a twinkling. Soup with an unexpected depth of flavor. Hasty puddings. And all without much of the time, mess, fuss, and demanding attention of conventional cooking. Then, marry these virtues with the sensibilities of two truly imaginative chefs, and the box really does become magic: Cuba Seafood Soup with Black Beans, Sweet Potato and Yam, Burmese Curried Chicken, Fish Filets Brazilian, Tahini Spice Cake with Orange Glaze, Double Chocolate Pudding. 43,000 copies in print.

I found 2 recipes in this entire book that are quick, easy-to-do recipes. If you're looking for fancy dishes you can make in the microwave, this is for you, not for the college kid looking for something simple.

Yes, I really cook in my microwave now. This book is so wonderful. I make my soups in here all the time, Chicken Tortilla, Minestrone... There are the how to's for vegetable cooking. I like this book because it tells you what you can and can't cook well in the microwave. And the price is fantastic! This is great for a first time cook too.
