Book Description
Seduction in Death (Engineer: Melissa Coates): Dante had been courting his victim in cyberspace for weeks before meeting her in person. A few hours later, she was dead. Detective Eve Dallas is playing and replaying the clues in her mind. The candlelight, the music, the rose petals strewn across the bed - he hadn't intended to kill her. But now that he has, he is left with only two choices: to either hole up in fear and guilt or start hunting again...
Reunion in Death (Engineer: Jill Sovis): At exactly 7:30 p.m., Walter Pettibone arrived home to over a hundred friends and family shouting, surprise! At 8:45 p.m., a woman with emerald eyes and red hair handed him a glass of champagne. One sip of birthday bubbly, and he was dead. The woman's name is Julie Dockport. Detective Eve Dallas remembers her all too well. Eve was personally responsible for her incarceration. And now, let out on good behavior, she still has nothing but bad intentions.
Purity in Death (Engineer: Jill Sovis): Louie Cogburn had spent three days holed up in his apartment, staring at his computer screen. When someone knocked at his door, Louie picked up a baseball bat, opened the door, and started swinging... The first cop on the scene fired his stunner twice and Louie died instantly. When a second man dies under nearly identical circumstances, Detective Eve Dallas starts racking her brain for answers and for courage to face the impossible...that this might be a computer virus able to spread from machine to man...

Book Description
The New Gambler's Bible is the smart gambler's ace in the hole. This comprehensive, up-to-date guide teaches both novice and experienced gamblers how to maximize their gains and minimize their losses at all forms of gaming, both traditional and newly popular, from blackjack, roulette, and playing the horses to video poker. Line drawings.
Customer Reviews:
Solid book, good advice, based on math - truly fantastic.......1998-11-14
This is a gambling book that looks at gambling in a realistic fashion. The first thing it does is to divide the games into those you can win in the long run (Blackjack (Barely), Poker, Sports Betting, etc) and those that you must lose in the long run (roulette, craps, baccarat, etc). It then explains each game in detail. It explains why progression betting systems don't work long-term, and why money management is psychological, not mathematical. For all the simple games (baccarat, roulette, etc) it provides all you'll ever need to know. For more complicated games like poker and blackjack, it provides all that most people will ever need to know and a firm basis for the serious student.
In the world of BS gambling books, this is a breath of fresh air.

Terrible.......2007-02-28
This book is useless. If you're looking at buying this book, most likely you already know what Akai MPCs and SP-1200s are, which is pretty much all there is to learn from this. This is supposed to be a 'how-to' guide, but it doesn't explain how to do anything. In fact, the only time the book even mentions MIDI is when the author mistakenly refers to the MPC as a 'MIDI Production Center' (as opposed to 'Music Production Center').
The book is also littered with grammatical errors and spelling mistakes.
great start up material........2005-06-22
This book will help the startup artist/writer with a few pointers on getting started. You will enjoy the reference material.
great startup book. .......2005-05-16
I got this book for my teenager, and he loves it. He always says how he wants to make beats, so I saw this and got it for him. The book talks about learning how to play an instrument, and gives you the basic foundation for getting started. I may get a few more for some nephews of mine. Thanks!

Customer Reviews:
Great book for beginners.......2003-05-19
Considering myself a beginner, I find Ms. Ada Kulleck's book one of the best book for beginners. I like Chapter 2 especially because there are some great tips on eliminating horses that don't have the potential to win. By eliminating the potential losers, the few horses that stand out gives you the opportunity to narrow your focus to find the potential winner or to play them collectively on exotic wagers. I combined what I learned from Ms. Kulleck's book and also established my own system. One handicapping system will not work all the time. This is a good [$$$] investment.
Nothing New.......2003-01-26
Unless your a novice this book will give you little. It is one of the few books on handicapping harness races that is readilly available but this is a weak work. Ms. Kulleck consistently contradicts herself and she seems to only skim the surface on most topics. Also it seems most of her research with her husband were done years ago and have probably become irrelevant over time.
A lot of work for little return.......2002-10-01
The book describes a method for rating horses that is very time consuming, with results that do not justify all the work. I did a dry run, handicapping several race cards, and had I bet real money, I would have been very upset with the results. Although I am not an expert, I hold my own when I study the past performances in the track program or The Daily Racing Form. By following the book's method, I did significantly worse than I would have on my own. Not recommended.
Is it worth it?.......2001-06-27
I have very low expectations of handicapping books. What makes me think that this person knows so much? What are their real credentials? Look at all these books on roulette, where there is no real way to beat the system and it takes 10 pages to teach you to play and what bets are slightly less efficient. Having said that, with horseracing, a book if not teaching you how to win, can at least help you have fun handicapping more informed. If it doesn't improve your chances, it can at least guide you along the way to doing so with more commitment.
I think this book partially accomplishes this limited expectation. The book lays the ground work in an understandable manner for how to read and understand the rudimentary relevance of horse statistics (eg, those in the Daily Racing Form). The author gives us the big warning signs not to bet on horses and positives that suggest better chances of winning. These insights, for the most part, is simply a summary of what most handicappers know and bet by, and will only help you eliminate big longshots or understand why a particular horse was bet a favorite. If this interests you, its probably better to read this book than go to the track and ask alot of people questions. Though, some of these basics can be obtained for free online without any excess fillers. You can tell the author really stretched this book out to get the 181 pages (including a 28 page glossary) that would make the book look worth it in the stores.
However, the author's statistics and in some cases logic falls short. For example, on one page she suggests that class in harness racing is irrelevant. Yet on another page, she suggests that a horse moving down in harness horse moving down in class should be viewed as a positive. Which is it? Should this tell you there was not a great deal of thought put into the book? One of the few (and I mean few) cases when she goes against conventional and basic wisdom, is when she suggests that post position is irrelevant in harness racing. Real statistics that I've seen published by tracks show otherwise, especially in twice around tracks (she doesn't even mention twice around tracks and their effects). While I give this book credit for having 4 chapters on harness racing (most books don't), which may have been useful if I was new to that sport, I cannot say that as a semi-experienced harness racing player, I gained any huge new insights.
Many of her thoughts on thoroughbreads maybe flawed too, but I do not know because I am still learning the basics of the thoroughbreads. As a beginner in this area, I did benefit more from the section on thoroughbreads then on Harness Racing, though I must read and/or experience more to weed out what's really important in this book.
However, overall I would say that the book lays out a few of the basics of handicapping. Don't consider reading this an intellectually intense experience (which is positive and negative at the same time) but you can get some grains of common sense and practical knowledge of how to read and look for the most important statistics in the forms.
Those I think should buy: casual trackgoers who want to learn the minimum and have fun, novices who need a "beach head" to read more advanced books or sharpen some very basic fundamentals.
Those who should not: Someone who already knows as much as the average schmuck who goes to the track alot and has an IQ over 100, someone who is really into the statistical side of horse racing and odds making, someone who is on a winning streak (the book could jinx you).
beginning at the horse tracks.......2000-11-11
This is a great starting place for beginners to horse racing, of which I add my name. I didn't know a from b.This book took me through the steps, in a very easy to understand manner. How to understand that racing form was a problem for me, this book over all the others I've read, guided me in very understandable language. I highly recommend this book especially for the beginners.

Track Classic.......2005-02-10
War & Peace, Wuthering Heights, Beat the Racetrack...a list of classic books. Beat the Racetrack reviews market inefficiencies associated with place and show betting. Empirical formulas for evaluating inefficiency and sizing bets are given. Guidelines for conditions where bets are not recommended are made. The book reviews similar studies by other statisicians and refines their work. This book really does not detail how to select winners or bet in exotic pools. The book specializes in place and show betting. Watch out that you either receive the detachable charts in the back of the book or you will need to program some quadratic formulas.
This title routinely sells for multiples of the list price.

Book Description
Threatened with a rare and life-threatening cancer, a scientist works with his doctors to make decisions in the face of uncertainty
After patients are diagnosed with a dread disease, they learn two daunting facts: (1) that no doctor has all the answers, and (2) that there are no answers, only odds. For the patients (and their families) who want to be involved in the key choices regarding treatment, Stephen Schneider is the ideal guide. A climate scientist, his life's work is decision making in the face of great uncertainty. This important book is both his own gripping story of working with his doctors to get the best care possible, and also a brilliant critique of the flawed system under which most doctors must now practice.
The vital, even life-saving lessons of the book include: advice on obtaining and interpreting odds; how to seek better treatments that may not fit the usual "standard of care;" ways to get treated as a unique individual and not the mythical Average Patient; how to recognize the decisions that you rather than the doctors must make; and, most important, how to build a partnership with a sometimes reluctant doctor.
"Both I and my wife [a cancer survivor] find your book terrific. In many ways, it is without precedent." -Gary Schoolnik, M.D., Professor of Medicine, Infectious Diseases, Microbiology and Immunology, Stanford University School of Medicine
Customer Reviews:
A useful, special case.......2007-08-16
Clearly, Schneider is not an ordinary patient to begin with, so his is a special case. Nevertheless, there is plenty of good stuff to think about and much good advice given. You can't do it his way, but he can point you in helpful directions.
I enjoyed reading it and learned from it.
One Man's Journey.......2007-05-14
I sent this book to a friend when he was diagnosed with squamous cell. He did not like it. He said it was very specific to that particular patient. To be fair, he only gave it 50 pages.
An Amazing Story.......2007-02-23
Most of us at one time or another will have to navigate the medical system that is more concerned with making money than health care. The author shows you have to be on your toes, learn as much as you can, and be able to challenge the doctor. For your own health, read this book.
If you doctor doesn't like you questioning, better to find one who doesn't mind before the need is urgent. I've found that if you challenge and question your hired talent, they will do a better job. In this context, questioning the doctor may get him to say "no- you can't do that, but why don't we try this instead?"
It always helps to be an intelligent consumer. Even if you aren't treated as well as the author was as a male, a Stanford professor and a PhD, you'll still get better care than if you are passive and let the doctor make all the decisions.
The Patient From Hell.......2007-02-12
Not well written, I flipped past pages of dialog, opinion , politics
(global warminng?) cutsey remarks and lots of attitude to find nuggest of facts. We all cheer his successful treatment, no doubt about that, but thanks to modern science, certain facts in his experience are already out-of-date and no longer in use. My oncologist listens to me and all options are on the table. Why Mr Schneider needs cudos or takes credit for changing procedures at Stanford University Teaching Hospital by simply talking to his oncologist is beyond me. Since I had purchased the book, I wrote a book review in the cover and donated it to the bookcart at the cancer center where I am treated. O.K. reading.
A very educational book.......2007-01-31
This is an excellent book for the following reasons:
1 - It explains step-by-step, the cancer treatment experienced by the author himself, and includes chemotherapy, surgery, radiation treatment, and finally a bone marrow transplant. I found the treatment for cancer much more complicated then I had expected. It is also no joy-ride.
2 - This book could have been called `Negotiating Medical Treatments' as the author successfully negotiates with doctors for better treatment procedures, and better cancer drugs, resulting in a better outcome for his serious condition. His personal journey highlights the failings of the current HMO-style medical systems that provides an ordinary level of treatment, whereas he seeks a premium service for his life-threatening condition as a Stage IV cancer patient. His options are to go to an advanced cancer clinic in say Europe to get very high quality care but at his own cost, or use his current medical service and negotiate premium treatments every step of the way. He chooses the latter.
3 - The author is a very astute person, a PhD scientist, who uncovers many of the flaws in his cancer treatment protocol, as he progresses through the treatment over several months.
This book will help those who require treatment for cancer, by helping them to navigate through the medical maze of doctors and hospitals.

Over the Open Fire.......2007-01-04
I was very satisfied with my new cookbook, however I was expecting to also receive in the back of this book a DVD that I thought was a part of all of the Over the Open Fire cookbooks. I was a little disapointed that this was not a part of MY book. I reviewed this book at a Lodge cooking store in Pigeon Forge TN, where the DVD was a part of the package. The next time I will be a little more careful in my selection of where the purchase is made.
