Twenty-five years and 26 books into the Spenser series, Hush Money dishes up another solid installment that is sure to fulfill the cravings of Parker fans new and old. This time Spenser and his buddy Hawk are helping a couple of troubled friends (i.e., they're working without a fee). The first case involves the denial of tenure for Professor Robinson Nevins. While tenure meetings are always closed-door affairs, Nevins assumes that the recent suicide of graduate student Prentice Lamont (who some claim was having an affair with Nevins) ruined his chances for a coveted permanent position. Spenser and Hawk cut a brawl-strewn path through the members of the tenure committee on their way to the surprising truth of the Nevins case. The other investigation pits Spenser against the unknown stalker of K.C. Roth. Spenser's girlfriend, Susan, has known K.C. for a while, and while the PI finds Ms. Roth a bit melodramatic, he's always eager to help a damsel in distress. The only problem is that after he's apparently resolved the case, K.C. begins a little stalking of her own--of Spenser.
The book is driven by the controversies surrounding political correctness that Parker always loves to confront, and it's fun to watch Spenser struggle (a little) to resist K.C.'s advances. It's also a (slightly disturbed) pleasure to see Spenser and Hawk address some academic hypocrisy with their own special brand of reasoning. Not a mystery for the cozy-loving palette, Hush Money's literate, tough-guy dialogue shows why Parker is the rightful heir to the throne of Chandler. --Patrick O'Kelley
Amazon.com Audiobook Review
Sometimes a detective's life is all work for no pay. As a favor to his buddy Hawk, Spenser agrees to investigate a man unjustly denied tenure. Then Spenser's girlfriend, Susan, asks Spenser to help stop a stalker. Plenty of work, sure, but all done pro bono. "Two cases at a time. I thought about having 'Master Sleuth' added to my business cards." As the cases unfold, Spenser (and Hawk) charm and batter their way past policemen, stockbrokers, hit men, white supremacists, an unstable woman, and a stuffy tenure committee. Author Robert B. Parker tells a good story, but his real strength is in his dialog--the rhythm of which Burt Reynolds captures perfectly. A fantastic reader, Reynolds uses a wide range of voices and accents to bring Parker's characters to life. (Running time: 9 hours, 6 cassettes) --C.B. Delaney
Book Description
Spenser has his hands full when he takes on two cases at once. In the first, a high-minded university might be hiding a killer within a swamp of political correctness. And in the other, Spenser comes to the aid of a stalking victim, only to find himself the unwilling object of the woman's dangerous affection.
"One of the great series in the history of the American detective story!"--The New York Times
"Spenser can still punch, sleuth, and wisecrack with the best of them."--Publishers Weekly
Customer Reviews:
Double the action.......2007-08-19
Spenser takes on two cases in "Hush Money," both as favors and both free. First Hawk comes to him with a request to help out a man named Robinson Nevins, who believes he was denied tenure inappropriately. Apparently a rumor was started that Robinson was responsible for the suicide of a young man; the rumor being that they were romantically linked and when Robinson broke it off, the young man (Lamont Prentice) killed himself. When Spenser begins to investigate, however, he quickly uncovers evidence that not only was the death not a suicide, but also that Lamont was running a blackmail ring where he would threaten to out closeted homosexuals unless they paid.
Secondly, Susan asks Spenser to help a friend of hers - KC - who is being stalked. Spenser has to discover who is stalking KC while at the same time fending off her ever-increasingly obsessive advances.
Plenty of twists and turns make this quite a story. The despicable Amir Abdullah made for some great comedy relief at times - at least I got a lot of laughs out of him. I'm not certain he was meant to be funny, but I found him to be.
Twist and Turns.......2007-02-06
Very good book. Lots of action twists, moral turns, ethnic turns, action and a tidbit of the human side of Hawk. Typical Parker with multiple plots, subplots and a . . . motivated woman.
We learn some of the history of Hawk.......2006-10-08
While this Spenser novel follows the same formula as the others, there is one significant difference. In this one, we learn much more about the enigmatic Hawk. When he encounters a man that tried to sexually abuse him as a child, Hawk roughs him up, an action that puzzles Spenser. Hawk explains, describing some of the events of his youth and how he became a boxer. There is less wisecracking in this story as there is in some of the others, which is unfortunate. The best Spenser novels are those where he interacts with officers Quirk and Belsen, which seems to bring out the best in wisecracking repartee.
Spenser is once again the noble crusader, risking his life to help a friend, in this case Hawk. The man who took Hawk off the streets has a son who was denied tenure at a university. Believing it to have been unfair, the man denied tenure goes to Hawk, who goes to Spenser. This begins a trek into the undercurrents of gay life and the hypocrisy of so many of those who consider it a scourge of civilization. There is also a second plot line that has a woman very aggressively pursuing Spenser in an attempt to get him to engage in sex. Like the gallant man he is Spenser maneuvers the situation so that Susan is given the opportunity to deal with it. Which is does, in a manner that impresses Spenser.
This is not the best Spenser novel, parts of the plot are a bit too exaggerated. Nevertheless, it is very good, and is one that I will probably reread in a few years.
The Young & The Jaded. Minors & Minorities Seethe in Stereotype City. Compulsion, Coercion, Connivance, Corruption........2006-04-13
This one began with a smoothly captivating, yawning weather "report" brought to the reader through the ambiance of a baseball game singing over radio waves. Spenser was bemoaning the contrast of slower ages passed, when a sports announcer could linger leisurely around springtime baseball news, between sudden screams of stand-up-and-cheer, bat cracking action. But, that day, as Spenser narrated, the radio voice was sliding so fast through a long list of ads, the endless promotions threatened to overrun notice of ongoing fly-balls busting and bursting through air.
A few of the early chapters took off slowly, mesmerizing-ly, with Spenser's sensual briefs of weather reports giving lazy home-runs to the sleepy emergence of spring, as money was extorted subtly in underplots.
Loved the way Parker posed Spenser slipping into such a still mode of respect as to consciously quiet his breathing as Hawk opened an accounting of a childhood experience with one of the suspects who had triggered a brief loss of control in Hawk's steel-studded cool.
The dual cases in HUSH MONEY, one a favor for Hawk, the other a favor for Susan, were a switch from the usual focus on a single client case, which has been the deal in the 7 Spenser novels I've read, with each additional one making me more glad I have around 26 left to read, with Parker still penning posh. The alternation of cases was a tantalizing treat of contrasts, especially as I wondered if a connection might emerge between them, even though the way each was introduced would, in "reality" cause them to have no cross over, no bleeding through, as it were.
Well, except that in the real world serendipity and synchronicity exist. And in fiction there's always the Right Brain at work, which causes authors to slip in amazingly cohesive, subtle themes which they weren't aware of as they were writing, maybe weren't aware of after the book was published and selling for a few decades. Then a sneaky reviewer comes along and sees a shiny silk thread woven through the words, visible only after the activation of some type of predestined ray to The Spectrum of Light, brought into reality by a time-release "code" built into the Laws of Physics during Day Two of Implementation of The Plan of The Genius.
Okay, all right. This is a P.I. novel. It isn't sci fi. But. Physical Reality is. Sci fi. It's the best sci fi in the evolution of life. What I'm v-rooming and v-rooming and v-rooming to say is that two totally disconnected cases which a detective is working simultaneously, whether in fiction or in reality, might have Right Brain, serendipitous connections. And, I, of course, having written a series of sci fi novels, with a couple of stand alone sci fi mss in progress, have a brain which looks around every fictional word for clues to the glue which connects seemingly unrelated happen stances.
So. For a time in my reading of HUSH MONEY I admit to having wondered if a seemingly nice, quiet lady in the gay (was he?) professor's case may have actually been the stalker in the "rescue me" conniving female case.
Most readers expect that, in the world of The Novel (feel very free to read my review of James A. Michener's book of that title) sub plots will religiously cooperate toward a tied-together denouement, ultimately joining with the main plot in an ever twisting vine of cranial convolutions contrived within the mind of the author.
The main theme of this novel, under which all the machinations play, seems to be a dramatization of sexual variations among various levels of human purity and pollution, with these variations brought into a cross-stitching pattern laid over stereotypes and sub-cultural demands, with the saffron thread of hypocrisy overcoming all within a tight weave of labyrinth proportions.
It was amazing how Parker brought out the admirable and the putrid within multiple types of sexual exchanges among multifaceted characters. But, KC Roth took the cake of the conniving female. As Parker described her, she had so many layers of contrivances, if they were all peeled away, nothing would be left. And yet, Spenser found a simple, natural a way to "save" KC from her "rescue me" contrived cries. However, after that didn't last, Spenser had to call in Susan, the "Big Gun," who played a few extraordinarily delightful scenes in this one.
The reader is required to make do with only one cooking scene rearing a fry pan and pasta pot in HUSH MONEY, but what an entry! My menu of it would drool in describing, "Black Bean Linguine, with the beans olive-oil-sauteed with garlic cloves, laced with Sherry, finished with fresh cilantro."
Yep, "Leftovers R Us." Given his perpetual ability to take whatever ingredients are at hand and gourmet the heck out of them, Spenser began joking about his new catering business taking over his not having a single clue to chew.
Spenser again ran through his evolving ethics of "to kill (in cold blood but with `just cause') or not to kill." And he made no bones about Hawk's willingness to kill (without a license, sans cultural sanction) human vermin. As usual, creativity won, and Spenser found ways of less bloodletting to solve injustices and end problems, which sometimes required more than one application of solutions. With two cases to juggle in HUSH MONEY the plots became so convoluted I wasn't sure how/if they interconnected, except to make the point that race, color, creed, and sexual persuasions had nothing to do with a person being a pig, or human with integrity (I don't mean to denigrate the cleaner species).
Layers upon layers of excellent pig interviews exposed their stench so plainly the pages reeked (entertainingly, of course). With that setting established in stinky spades, when a real human being stepped into a session with Spenser the fresh air was so evident my eyes literally widened (and quit watering). I was hugely impressed that Tommy (David) Harmon seemed so absolutely real. I've met only a small number of people like him in my life. Every word of dialogue in that interview refreshingly set David aside and above, but one reply stood out. It was David's reply to Spenser's repeated ease-setting promise that, in his line of business he wouldn't get far if he blabbed heavy secrets divulged in an interview.
Spenser said: "I can avoid mentioning your name."
Harmon replied: "If I said it, I'm responsible for it."
Being responsible for everything one has ever blabbed or written, wow. Given my overboard spontaneity, and foot-in-mouth tendency, I've had some tough chewing eating certain words I've spewed without proper clues. Ohhhh. Myyyyyy.
I'll conclude by quoting my nephew Lonnie, with his adorable 5 years-old voice still speaking clearly in my mind nearly 40 years later. He had been spouting off at the mouth into my tape recorder for several minutes when he stopped suddenly, face glowing, and grinned around the words, "Shut my mouth."

4th Book in the Liam Rhenford/Faniulh Series.......2002-07-04
In this book, Liam leaves the town of Southwark to investigate crimes on the court circuit in an official capacity as one of the Duke's Quaestors. His first town involves two capital crimes: A brother and his wife charged with conjuring a demon to kill his brother and a wizard found dead in his bed with a hideous smile stretched across his face. Liam is able to solve the crimes and the court travels to the next city. But, as they travel, Liam begins to feel that all is not right in the court. His fellow Quaestor, in particular, is acting suspiciously. Before Liam knows it, he is accused and convicted of summoning a demon to kill the Duke's Aedile! How Liam solves the mystery and saves himself is an action pacted adventure that you won't want to miss!
Once again, Daniel Hood has used superb characterization and wonderfully evocative language to bring his fantasy world to life. The characters are very three-dimensional and are normal people with strengths and weaknesses. This book stands alone (and Hood does a splendid job at giving new readers a quick synopsis of previous adventures when necessary), but will reward dedicated fans with more fascinating glimpses into Liam Rhenford's cloudy past. Take the time to find and buy this book - you will love it!
it was great.......2001-06-11
I love the Liam rhenford series. liam is a queator which is like a police detective and solves a case adn gets arrested and thrown into the dungeon, but saves the world from an evil demon. yay. i hope more buy his books so that manuscript on Hood's shelf doesn't get really dusty.
Hood does for Fantasy what Asimov did for SF.......1999-07-25
A legitimate puzzler whodunnit in a fantasy realm? At first glance, preposterous. It would be too difficult to avoid cheating. Which is what they said of mysteries in Science Fiction before Asimov showed how it could be done. Daniel Hood has pulled off the equivalent feat with his novels of Liam Rhenford, crafting fully satisfying mysteries in a detailed and vivid Fantasy realm. I should confess--I first discovered these stories when the publisher sent me a copy of Beggar's Banquet for review (not understanding that I do not do SF&F reviews). I was first intrigued, then hooked, then wowed. I spent my own money on the other two novels in print, will buy the fourth (actually the 2nd) if it becomes available again, and will snap up those that follow.
Expanding the world of Hood.......1999-06-15
Daniel Hood again succeeds in creating a world which is as fascinating as it is accessible. Hood's talent lies in making fantasy meet reality - his characters are accessable, his settings imaginative, his tales spellbinding but never beyond the grasp of reality. It is easy to imagine oneself inside the story, riding alongside Liam and his hilariously humorless "sidekick," Fanuilh.
Most importantly, each successive novel builds on the previous and encourages frequent re-reads, but doesn't necessitate the new reader to buy the set. Pick one up. You'll soon want them all!
Have Dragon, Will Travel.......1998-03-11
Dan Hood has created a wonderful cast of characters that resurface anew in this fourth book of the series. Liam Rhenford and his dragon familiar are "on the road" for a bright new change of pace, and the action and intrigue make for a compelling read. I missed the banter between Liam and his friend Coeccious, but enjoyed the expansion of characters and settings within the wonderfully intersting fantasy world created by Dan Hood. High Recommended.

Great series!.......2002-11-15
I loved the adventures of Liam and Fanuilh and eagerly await more :) Great merge of Fantasy and Mystery genre. I highly recommend this author.
A refreshing fantasy series.......2002-08-14
I'm very impressed with Daniel Hood's success in placing the traditional detective story in a fantasty setting. I wonder how many fantasy series there are out there that don't revolve around the very much over-used "quest" theme...? Thebook all the usual components of its genre, but they're placed in original situations-- the end result being that, instead of groaning "Another one of these same books again!!", the reader is simply enjoying the story.
A Fantasy Murder Mystery!.......2002-07-02
When one of Liam's few friends/acquaintances (a wizard) is murdered in his bed, the wizard's familiar bites him on the leg and steals part of his soul. So begins the partnership between Liam Rhenford, a traveler/soldier/poet/historian, and Faniulh, a dog-sized dragon. Faniulh promises to teach Liam some simple spells and such in return for finding Tarquin's (the wizard) murderer.
The story isn't long and is quite simple, yet very engaging. The characters are well-fleshed out and cared for and it was fun to read a mystery story in a fantasy setting. This book is the first in the series and comes as part of a trilogy in A Dragon Familiar. If you enjoy fantasy and mystery this is the perfect book for you!
Good characters, but a predictable ending........1999-10-25
This book had excellent characters; I really enjoyed meeting Liam, Fanuilh, Coeccias, and the lesser characters, too. Unfortunately, it didn't make a good mystery. I knew how it was going to end from the moment Liam met the killer.
Fantasy Murder Mystery -- Perfect!.......1999-07-23
I loved the book. I enjoy fantasy and I also like a good murder mystery. I really do wish there were more books like this.

Great if you have all day to cook..........2007-10-06
This is a recipe book, and that's it. Perfect if that's what you're looking for, but if you live in the real world and eat out from time to time there really are no good tips in here. Essentially what you get is, "cook for yourself" or "learn to punch your way out of a wet paper bag" (I choose the latter for hopefully obvious reasons). Thinking for yourself isn't overrated after all!
Great gift!.......2007-10-04
Purchased this book along with the "what to eat" publication as an early gift for a nervous mother-to-be. It was received with much appreciation by this first-time mommy who was seeking information in order to have a sucessful pregnancy and a healthy baby. A useful tool in gaining knowledge from one source rather searching thru many others. It's also something that can be appreciated as it is passed along to another mom-to-be.
Good Menu, but Very Expensive Ingredients.......2007-07-22
Buying 2 days of food using this cookbook cost over $90 in our local grocer. So while the recipes are good, we are using them in extreme moderation as many of the main ingredients are hard to come by and expensive.
A Definite Must-Have for Expectant Moms.......2007-07-22
I wish I would have had this during my first pregnancy. I had asked all of my health care professionals what I should eat and how I should take care of myself during that crucial time, but the standard reply was always, "Eat healthy and exercise." This book defines what eating healthy and taking care of yourself during pregnancy involves. It includes tips on weight gain, pre-pregnancy and postpartum nutrition, information on low carb and vegetarian diets as well as family-friendly recipes.
you know it anyway.......2007-01-15
Got this book by mistake. It is OK but there is nothing in it that you don't get at the ante netal classes. Would reccomend what to expect when your expecting instead.

Delicious Island Barbecue You Can Grill Up in Your Own Backyard.......2007-02-18
Last week I went through my cookbooks, to see if I could weed some out, because I have too many to mention. It's hard getting rid of a cookbook, especially one with a few recipes in it that you've come to love. But I've scanned the recipes I need to keep forever into my MacBook. However, there were an even dozen I couldn't part with. These are books I turn to time and time again, even though I consider myself somewhat of a gourmet chef.
Dunstan Harris' and Brooke Scutter's ISLAND BARBECUE is one of the books I kept. One because the recipes are so delicish, and two, because it's informative and well written. I like the way the author's tell you about and how to use the fuels used in barbacue -- charcoal briquettes, mesqjuite charcoal and other hardwood charcoals. I like the little essays, like the origin of sauces for example, but most of all I like the delicious recipes, like the "Spicy Barbecued Tuna with Mango Salsa". You just have to try that. A favorite of my hubby's is the "Spicy Jerked Steak". Actually he likes most of what I make him from this very fine cookbook and you will too, I'm sure of that.

Wow - that is great barbecue.......1999-11-29
The marinades and sauces that are in this book make the most mouth watering barbecue that I have ever had. Most of the ingredients you can find in supermarkets. If you like a zing in your food, try this book out.
Island BBQ is a must for daydreamer's. Fun! Good source.......1998-03-23
This was a fun book to read for me. The stories that were read made the visualization process much more appealing. A cookbook should not be just recipies, but an inspiration to the craft. For me, Island Barbeque has been an inspiration as well as good source of information. I have used it to make wonderfully hot jerk marinades and sweet and spicy ginger beer, among other fantastic dishes.

The Book of Carribbean Cooking (Book of...)
ASIN: 0895944006 |
Book Description
In the bustling markets of the Caribbean islands, plaid-clothed vendors call out in singsong voices to advertise thick slices of pepper-strewn fish, warm fritters, and sweet coconut confections. Blending African, Indian, Chinese, and Amerindian influences, Caribbean cooking is as richly complex as the people who live there. In ISLAND COOKING, native Jamaican Dunstan A. Harris has collected a sampling of tantalizing spark-and-spice recipes from each region of the Caribbean. Try Chicken in Coconut Milk from Martinique; the French Caribbean's favorite Stuffed Crabs; a Blue Mountain Cocktail named for Jamaica's highest mountain range; or the ever-popular Sweet Potato Balls, adored by islanders everywhere. With more than 200 recipes and a glossary explaining island-specific ingredients, ISLAND COOKING brings a taste of the tropics home to your table.

Treat Yourself to a Taste of the Islands.......2005-06-07
My sister has this book and I was impressed by the range of recipes it carries. (see the Search Inside the Book for a sampling)
The format is easy to use, with the list of ingredients down the side of the page next to the instructions. At a glance, you can see if you have on-hand what the recipe requires.
Some ingredients are not on the average American's cupboard shelf, but the author tells where to search for them (Hispanic grocery stores) or suggests a substitution. The glossary goes into more detail on this, such as explaining the six forms of coconut (grated, shredded, coconut water, milk, cream & oil).
Cook up an island feast for a party of friends or just treat yourself. This book makes it easy.

best $15 spent, if you like to cook, and enjoy Thai food, etc........2007-09-05
Have you ever purchased a colorful asian cook book from the discount bin at the local bookstore, to find it's all pretty photos, but otherwise filled with aimless, unremarkable yet needlessly complicated or unclear recipes? I have.. to the point that most of my cooking involves going online, to find at least 3 recipes for whatever I have in mind that evening, and to use the best parts of each found recipe to come up with my own.. Well, I need to do so no more so far as Southeast Asia is concerned, thanks to the Laursens wonderful, concise, yet roomy-enough-to-allow-me-to-experiment recipes. As my wife knows, i HATE following recipes, as most 'exotic' recipes usually call for at least ONE vital mystery ingredient I will never stock, so I usually end up chucking the recipe and instead blaze thru my own rebellious trail. Well, the Laursens allow me the breathing room to make substitutions, letting me know which ingredients are key, and why, and how to make do when you don't have them all, and it's all very reassuring, aiming primarily at providing a basic, straightforward foundation for south east Asian cooking. Food the locals eat, yet with just the right amount of westernization, this book was written for me.. No wild look-at-me recipes that you will either make once and never again or not dare to make at all.... I was such a geek I took the book to my local asian supermarket and was found in the sauces/spices aisle thumbing thru pages to make sure I knew which soy sauces/fish sauces/chilli pastes to weed thru... Enough of my quirks.. the recipes? I've had this book but two days, and have made 2 meals, that will make my local thai/vietnamese restaurants sadly miss a good chunk of my business, as they came out flawless; amazingly so, given the simplicity and conciseness of the recipes...Again, best $15 spent.
THE BEST book in my kitchen.......2007-03-13
I have savored so many recipes from this book. I absolutely amaze my dinner guests with the recipes!
Great book with simple, straightforward recipes.......2006-10-18
I find myself reaching for this book quite a bit. I've made quite a few recipes from here with great success; the flavors are fresh, bright and bold, and many of the recipes are inherently healthy. There's great stuff here for weeknight meals, but some of them are still nice enough for casual company dinners. This is not an entirely authentic cookbook, but it's still all very tasty. If you don't have an Asian market locally (or large Asian section at your local mega-mart) you might find some of the ingredients hard to source, although that's not a problem for me being in the Seattle metropolitan area. Make sure you try their recipe for Saigon cinnamon ice cream - it's foolproof and to die for.
Southern Girl in Colorado.......2006-03-30
This book is fantastic. It is practicle and easy to use. It convinced me to make my first attempt at homemade Thai and it was contagious. Our friends loved the recipes (they usually eat Mexican) and now love thai dishes. I need MORE receipes, please do another cookbook, and thanks!
Culinary diversity and ethnic meal-time authenticity.......2004-06-06
