Book Description
"Monica Ferris has a talent for vivid detail," raves the Old Book Barn Gazette. And her heroine, needlecraft shop owner Betsy Devonshire, is "a great character" says Midwest Book Review. Now it's up to Betsy to unravel a five-year-old murder case that refuses to die.
Customer Reviews:
What a fun series! Great Characters!.......2007-09-20
I really love this series, and after taking a long break from it, it was terrific to read this 6th installment. This one seemed better than the previous couple, and makes me want to pick up the next one right away! Very entertaining and fun. And one doesn't have to be a needlework fan to enjoy them, though I certainly am and I love it!
once again the author gives us a good mystery.......2007-08-15
Betsy has solved a few mysteries since she has arrived in her new "home town" and it makes sense that she would tackle an old mystery. The old mystery is a good one, and kept me reading this book past my bed time.
Not one of her best, but still a good book.......2007-08-09
Monica Ferris is doing a great job of keeping this series fresh. It could get old quickly, with the troubles Betsy faces as a new-ish needlecrafter and a newer business owner. But I really enjoy how her characters continue to flesh out, and how Ferris disproves the "Minnesota Nice" by giving her recurring characters edges. Not everyone is sweet and simple -- they have prejudices, challenges, and troubles of their own.
In this "episode," Betsy is taken to task for employing a "known" murderer. She lashes back at the Monday Bunch and sets out to prove what happened, once and for all, in a five-year-old double murder.
The resolution is unique and the book kept my attention all the way through. Criticisms -- by taking on a five-year-old murder, in which she knew neither of the victims and isn't particularly well acquainted with the accused, Betsy loses some of our interest. Why should we really care about this couple, or Foster Johns? In the previous books, the need to find out "what really happened" was more critical. But all in all, a well-written addition to the series.
predictable.......2005-07-21
Anybody who has read the Sherlock Holmes story "The Problem At Thor Bridge" will have this one figured out in five minutes.
Old Crimes, New Clues.......2004-09-03
Betsy Devonshire now owns the building where her needle craft shop Crewel World is located. Unfortunately, ownership includes having to put a new roof on the building and she hires local contractor Foster Johns.
When Foster comes in to collect his payment, the Monday Bunch of needle crafters stop in their tracks. Didn't Betsy know that Foster was a murderer? That five years ago he had killed his lover Angela Schmitt and then a few days later her husband Paul Schmitt.
Angela was shot in the locked bookstore where she worked. Paul was beaten and shot by the same gun in their home. Foster admitted to having a romance, (they weren't lovers) with Angela but he didn't kill her or Paul. There wasn't enough evidence and Detective Mike Malloy had to let him go and the murders have remained unsolved.
Foster asks Betsy to investigate the crime and clear his name.
Betsy found it hard to investigate as everyone seemed to be certain Foster was guilty. Paul and Angela were such nice people, that there just couldn't have been anyone else who would have wanted to kill them. Angela was such a sweet, shy person. And Paul always had a smile on his face, willing to help everyone.
Betsy's investigation found that people aren't always what they seem to be and the clues led her to a solution that would surprise everyone.
Highlights:
The Monday Bunch telling Ghost Stories on Halloween. This group gets bigger each book and they're all great characters. Always help to Betsy, as they know all the gossip in town.
Every one in the Monday Bunch, especially Godwin melting over Rik Lightfoot, a gorgeous, rich man who does needlecrafts when he comes into Crewel World, making Betsy wonder if Godwin's boyfriend John didn't have a point about him flirting with other guys.
Godwin, still melting until Rik tells him a long, long story about his passion.
The mystery was very interesting. I enjoyed how Betsy had to go back five years and try and get people to remember things that weren't colored with their suspicion that Foster was guilty.
No Lowlights. A very satisfying mystery.

Product Description
This full-color book of photographs records Wisconsin from an unusual viewpoint. The camera was suspended from a kite and controlled by the photographer, Craig Wilson, on the ground. From fifty to a few hundred feet in the air, we see festivals, zoom close over "Wisconsin" on the capitol dome, get a seagull's eye view of sailors, and hover over the crowd at a University of Wisconsin-Madison football game. More than 140 gorgeous photographs offer a unique look at people and places around the state. Captions in English, Spanish, German and Mandarin Chinese.
Customer Reviews:
Great Book!.......2007-01-23
A very unique and fascinating book. Although the photos in the book are all of places and events in Wisconsin, there is a universality of subject matter that shoiuld make it interesting to photographers and anyone who likes photo books.
Better than a birds eye view!.......2007-01-18
How refreshing to see a perspective in photography that profiles the life and times of Wisconsin and the residents with such clarity and storytelling. Hanging by a Thread brought so many great memories back to someone who has since relocated East. Absolutely amazing that the photographs can capture the life of Wisconsinites on a kite and string. The stories behind the photos added a refreshing prespective on Craig's art. And behind each photo is an inventor, an entrepreneur who's passion in flight and photography has brought me back home again within these pages.
Thank you Craig for capturing my memories in a fresh perspective through the pages of your book.
A Gem!.......2006-12-31
As a native Wisconsonite now living in the tropics, I've tried to keep a balanced view of the state. Of course--it's beautiful. The people are great. There's no lack of interesting things, crackpot ideas, places to go and things to do. But hey--there are other places in the world, right? As my brother once said, "hey, I've never seen a place where people were so INTO their state!" Sometimes, the cult of Wisconsin can be a little heavy.
But then along comes this book, and I'm completely entranced.
The photographs are great. The perspectives are amazing. The text is understated and fun. And the stuff photographed brought tears to my eyes. Especially the Mississippi River covered in fog.
And the stuff people do in Madison--Opera in the Park and the Concerts on the Square and jogging for this that and the other thing and ice fishing and...on and on. All of the oddball things and places and events are endearing.
If you've lived in Wisconsin and loved it...well, buy this book!
Unexpected.......2006-12-08
When I first heard about this book I was not enthusiastic. Pictures from a kite? It sounded like sort of a hobby project, or a curiosity piece. I figured the photos would be lousy.
I was wrong! I'm not sure if the pictures are National Geographic quality, but they are darned nice pictures. Don't think "pictures from a kite" think about the pictures you'd take if you could float gracefully over the landscape.
As noted by another review, the pictures are much more intimate than normal shots taken from above. They are much more elegant and personal.
My wife is a recent immigrant and has come to love Wisconsin. I bought this for her because I haven't seen any other book that so gracefully and truthfully captures the spirit of Wisconsin. Thanks Mr. Wilson!
I'm enjoying the views!.......2006-10-11
Most of the aerial photography we see was taken from an airplane. These photos usually lack the detail that Craig Wilson has captured in the images taken from his camera attached to his kite string. Giving us a unique perspective of common objects and areas. The patchwork of picnic blankets, the aerial view of a frozen lake, a closeup of the top of the capitol building in Madison are just some of the fantastic photos in this book. This book gets two thumbs up!

Book Description
You can take the girl out of Queens. . .
Or can you? Because for five years, fashion. . .what?--assistant?--Ellie Levine was taking a halfhearted stab at it, commuting to Manhattan by day, trying desperately to keep secret her outerborough accent, hair. . .daughter! Until the day fate landed her back in her Richmond Hill neighborhood, the very place she'd sworn to escape.
Only now she had a business to run there-not the business she had in mind, perhaps, designing wedding dresses for Fran Drescher wanna-bees, but a business nonetheless. And the boy next door, who for years had been the married-man-next-door, was suddenly available. And interested?
So maybe there really was no place like home. So maybe the life she wanted and the life she had were starting to merge. And if she wasn't a success by anyone else's definition? Maybe it was time to throw away the dictionary. . .
Customer Reviews:
A lot of heart.......2005-12-02
Hanging by a Thread is a rare thing in chick lit. It gives the reader a lot of credit. The heroine isn't perfect and unlike the others in it's genre which follow a formula, this one doesn't. Ellie works a dead end job in fashion dreaming of a more glamorous life. Not so far away from her job in Manhattan she has a 5 year old daughter, Starr and a grandfather who she affectionally calls Leo whom she lives with in Queens. Ellie works hard and her life isn't all that complicated until the life she settled for starts giving her complications. Her two best friends Luke and Tina begin to have marital problems. Ellie's worst fear is realized when someone she's close to dies and she gets to the bottom of some old family secrets. Ellie is put in some not so shining positions in this book such as she's in love with a married man, there's some question as to the paternity of her daughter, but her razor sharp wit and good heart help her through. Don't pass this one up. Not your average chick lit.
Hysterical!!!.......2005-07-20
This book is so funny I found myself laughing out loud without realizing it and folks would turn and stare at me. If you want an easy read, a good heartwarming story, and an absolutely great laugh, read this one.
unconventional story, enjoyable read.......2005-04-01
This is not your average "girl meets boy" chick lit. Ellis is independent yet sheltered. She knows what she wants, but is scared to go after it. By the end of the book she is learning to go after what she wants as she emerges from her cocooned life. Her grandfather's death, something she had feared for a long time coming actually became the catalyst for Ellie to finally start *living* her life instead of just simply drifting along. The romance was a tangle, and definitely not a situation most writers would put their characters into for fear of alienating the reader. I felt that it made the character seem more *real* though, because real life IS messy that way. It made it seem that much more believable. I wish that the romance could have come sooner in the book, but it would have made Ellie seem like an unsympathetic character so I understand why they author had to wait it out until nearly the end. Altogether I really enjoyed "watching" all of the relationships Ellie had (with her family members and friends) evolve. Plus there were some really fun "twists" to the story!
Had to stop reading it.............2005-03-01
I was enjoying this book and made it all the way to page 31. As a baby boomer I loved the reference to Ellie's mother's Villager sweater.
And then, on page 31, there it was. Usually authors wait a bit longer. Yes, it was the obligatory insult to conservatives. I am really get sick and tired of every "chic lit" writer feeling the need to stick insults of Republicans and conservatives in their books. Newflash to writers: some of the people who buy and read your books may happen to be conservatives and/or Republicans. You are limiting your book sales by this practice. If this review makes just one author or budding author think twice about what they write then it will have served its purpose.
Not for readers looking for "fluff": 4 1/2 stars.......2004-11-17
A guest review by Mary K. Bryson
Heroine: Average
By day, Ellie Levine is a middle-level designer's assistant on Seventh Avenue. By night, Ellie is a single mother living with her Grandfather in Queens, still neighbors with the people she's known her whole life. Independent in her vintage fashion and career determination, Ellie is stylish, educated, and witty. She is also resigned to staying in Richmond Hill, since she can't afford to move her family to the city, and really, deep down, home is where all her childhood friends and neighbors are.
Themes of motherhood, fatherhood, truth and honesty, friendship and romantic love, and a whopping dose of city chic add up to a second-chance romance, difficult relationship choices, and a surprising career path. Despite an edgy and sarcastic voice, Ellie is sincere and shows integrity of
character-although it doesn't spare her from getting caught in a web of well-intended deception with her two best friends. Karen Templeton writes about single motherhood, a young woman's creative ambitions, and romantic confusion while balancing the everyday ordinary reality of Queens with the fantastic flash of New York City. Ellie's life drastically changes, and change certainly isn't always easy.
What worked for me:
Ellie's voice and her relationship with her daughter are endearing, as is her satisfying tendency to fight back when pushed. Compassionate and normal, she is the perfect heroine to root for as she faces the issues of both the big city and the close-knit community.
What didn't work for me:
My only real beef with this book is that Red Dress Ink opted for a stick-insect cartoon heroine on the cover, when Ellie describes herself on the first page, in the first paragraph, as "short, pudgy," not able to fit into a size 8 by a long shot and short enough to eschew flats forever. As she puts it, "without heels, I look like I'm standing in a hole."
Overall:
Red Dress Ink has published another great addition to the Chick Lit genre.
Warning: Readers should be aware that this is not a cotton candy coated romance. Characters deal with hard issues from dealing with affairs and unwanted pregnancy to sexual molestation between five-year-olds. The situations are not clean cut and the characters face difficult decisions, which add to quality and reality of this novel, but may not meet all Chick Lit fans' expectations.

EXCELLENT PARENTING BOOK W/ GREAT CHILDREN'S BOOK LISTS........1999-10-25
You do not have to be catholic to totally become absorbed in Mrs. Marx's comments. The book breaks the year into weeks/with timely family topics, bible verses, and excellent childrens' book recommendations and follow-up family discussion questions. Adults and children alike will be enlightened by the variety of circumstances discussed with a very open mind. This is the first book like this that I have seen and you won't be disappointed. Topics range from baseball and the "Amazing Mets", to miscarriage, abortion, death, Christmas, discipline,moving..and on and on. It's a wonderful book for today's busy families.
This book offers wonderful insight into family values........1999-08-24
This is a book that touches the reader's souls. The author opens her and her family's life stories and tells of the trials and tribulations and you quickly realize she is telling your story as well.
I was touched by the compelling passion in her work. She weaves her stories in such a manner that makes you feel a part of it all.
I found the book references to be invaluable. For every topic she covers, there are guides to more specific works that you can study.
I would highly recommend this book to all families.

Can't put it down.......2006-07-26
An amazing series that just consumes you. Try and put it down, I dare you! :)
A follow-up on her first (and Excellent!) Fantasy Novel, 'Destiny Denied', this adventure moves into the realm of Sci-Fi, with the nonviolent practioners of the 'mind sense' locked in an ideological struggle with a decaying and morally bankrupt galactic empire.
A must read!
Gripping Adventure.......2006-07-12
A thrilling adventure, mixed with conspiracies, intrigue, and romance; her trilogy unfolds a noble battle against unbeatable evil. I couldn't put them down! I read all 3 books in about 2 days... The story is clever and flows smoothly, the characters are complex and vivacious, and the author's message is beautiful and simple. Truly a tale that can apply to our world today. What an artist! I want more! :)
Enjoyed Tremendously!.......2006-03-30
Have read tons of fantasy and science fiction (Hobbs, Le Guin, Tolkien, Eddings, etc...) and these books are some of the best out there. A great blend of action entertainment and philosophical reverie. Loved the diverse characters. The ending leaves you wanting more. Looks like a new author - hope there is more coming! Z.M.

Excellent starting point for the emotionally abused........2007-09-03
This book is wonderfully helpful! It can be really hard to understand that you are abused when it's not physical. Because the bruises are not visible you can fool yourself into thinking that you're crazy for feeling like a victim.
This book helps you delve into:
1. types of abuse
2. types of victims
3. types of abusers
4. why we keep repeating patterns
5. how to break those patterns
6. how to recover from the abuse and make a healthier and happier life for yourself.
Written in plain language, easy to read and relate to the text. Lots of good examples. This is a great tool. There are special assignments throughout the book to do as tools for recovery as well as a good resource page. I totally want the rest of her books now!
Very Informative.......2007-07-26
As a psychologist I provide copies of this book to clients that haven't recognized that their situation is abusive even if it doesn't include physical violence.
THIS BOOK HAS OPENED MY EYES AND HELPED ME TO CHANGE MY LIFE!.......2007-07-15
Because of a very verbal abusing/controlling relationship, I bought this book. It has opened my eyes in more ways than one. I highly recommend this book. Another reason that I bought this book is that since being in this controlling relationship for 5 years, I have had migraines and muscle aches 5 times per week or more that kept me bedridden! My self-esteem went from a healthy 10 to a minus 2 these past 5 years. Moreover, because I was "ill" so much, I did not exercise and gained 35 pounds. Eating had become my comfort, even sickness became my comfort. This book has helped to discoverer:
By ALLOWING this person to verbually abuse me and control me, it caused illness in my body and very often! I was tired of being ill most of the time. You see, I used my "illness" to gain control by:
1) Getting him to feel sorry for me so I could have my way for a change--I would not be forced to do what he wanted when I was "ill". (This "illness" method has stopped working in the last year).
2) I told my "illness" BYE BYE because it was controlling me! Now, I choose the healthy and honest way to control my life: "Stand up for myself with no need to explain myself."
3) I used the "illness" as an excuse to go to bed and "hide" from this person. Also, it was an excuse to not have to go to work so this person would continue to "take care of me." Now, I am walking 2 miles a day and physically and mentally I am healthier. I am getting in shape mentally and physically--I can go to work with no problem. And take care of myself with no problem.
2) After reading this book, I realized that I had ALLOWED this person to control me for 5 years and be verbally abusive to me when we were alone and in public. I have taken back my power now and I am now in control. Today, for the first time, I stood up to him and said "No" about something I did not want to do and told him what I CHOOSE to do instead. And I felt wonderful inside, my self-esteem went up quite a lot! YES!!!
If you are in a relationship or taking any kind of verbal abuse or control, I highly suggest that you purchase this book. I has truly been an eye-opener and life-saver for me as I learned that I had allowed this person to verbally abuse and control me, I gave him this power because I let him do these things. No more, now, I am in control of my life and my thoughts. This book is so very highly recommended and I believe it will help you. Also, may I suggest that you consider Louise Hay CD's" Self-Esteem, Stress-Free, 101-Power Thoughts", these have also been a big help to me and I listen to them often. May my story help others who are hurting right now, may you find the peace and love that you need.
Excellent Book For the Emotionally Abused.......2007-06-10
I found this book extremely helpful as an emotionally abused woman. I highly recommend it to anyone who has ever experienced that kind of abuse. It made me understand how the abuse occured and what I can do to prevent it in the future. This is a must read.
Flawed premise.......2007-04-08
While this book touches on many truths regarding emotionally abused women and thier abusers, it starts from a flawed premise. That premise being that ALL emotionally abused women were abused as children in one way or another and that is why the woman choses abusive partners and even friends all through her life. Not ALL women who are emotionally abused come from an abusive childhood, to say so is an irresponsible commentary on the subject. I find the book "Why Does He Do That?: Inside the Minds of Angry and Controlling Men" by Lundy Bancroft a more in depth and on target handling of the subject.

Peanut butter Planet serves it all from Soup to Nuts.......2007-07-08
I discovered Robin Robertson's "Peanut butter planet" while I was hunting for cook books at my local Barnes and Nobel. As a self-proclaimed peanut butter lover and vegetarian (Robertson is a vegan herself as are all 80 receipes with optional variations to add meat), I felt as though this book had been written with me in mind. Robertson's chatty style, her easy-to-follow directions, and delicious varied receipes make this book a must have for anyone who can not bear to have the roof of their mouth be anything but sticky.
