Book Description
Architect Chris Meadows has the bad luck to see an old girlfriend get hit by a car full of drugland hitmen. He has the worse luck to see the face of her murderers. Because in a town as violent as Miami, a witness doesn't stand a chance--especially when the cops who ought to be protecting him are more interested in dangling him as live bait.

Drugs and Murder in Miami.......2001-04-24
A shadowy figure with immense power and money decides to take over the cocaine trade in Miami. It requires, of course, killing his rivals. Chris Meadows, a young, Miami architect, is only dimly aware of the drug trade until an old girlfriend and her child are accidentally killed before his eyes by hitmen. Worse, he can identify the killers, so he becomes their target. When a police detective seems more interested in using Chris for bait to catch the killers than in protecting him, Chris decides that he is on his own. His terrified twists and turns to evade the killers take him through the deadly world of Miami's drug scene. Hiaasen and Montalbano, writers for the Miami Herald, put an authentic edge on a Miami that tourists don't see. This is not the Hiaasen who writes biting humor about Florida's developers and politicians. This is the Hiaasen who gives us a thriller steeped in Miami. The story will keep you reading.
Powder Burn, rewiewed by Geir Elseth.......1998-01-23
After having enjoyed other books by Carl Hiaasen, I had certain expectations about this book. I was not disappointed, but Powder Burn is not in the same league as Tourist Season, Doubble Whammy, Skin Tight, Striptease and Stormy Weather. But it was interesting to note the similarities between this book and the later ones mentioned above. It is the cuban cop, journalists playing a part, the plot taking place in Florida (Miami) and the focus of a theme that, I belive, the authors feel is a threat to the Florida region. This time it is drug war and dopers, in the other novels it is the disadvantages of tourism, the destroying of nature, the search for beauty by operations and corruptions among politicians. One major difference is that the main character in this book, an architect named Chris Meadows, is not the tough hero type, but rather a more human hero driven by fear. So if you are a fan of Carl Hiaasen, you should read Powder Burn. On the other hand if you are not a fan, you might find the book a bit ordinary.

On the face of it, this is the story of unsolved arson at a high-glamour resort, a mystery packed with suspects that range from crusty ski bums to radical tree huggers to the resort's own corporate honchos. But underlying this entertaining true-life plot is a greater theme that is playing out across America. Here, tensions mount between the progress-minded shareholders of Vail Resorts Inc., environmentalists, and locals who simply pine for the days when they weren't priced out of having a meal--or a life--in Vail, Colorado. Elsewhere, similar hostility brews over conflicting interests in pricey tourist regions like Taos, New Mexico; the Florida Keys; and the Hamptons of New York. So while Powder Burn is an intriguing tale on its own, it also serves as a snapshot of our country as it struggles with its final growing pains. The modern corporatization of Vail Mountain is in direct contrast to its past, when a hard-drinking fellow could ride his horse into a bar and turn himself into local legend. Daniel Glick, a special correspondent for Newsweek, masterfully uses his reporter's eye for detail to deliver the spirit and breathtaking scenery of the Rocky Mountain West. He introduces personalities in rapid-fire succession, but, to his credit, the reader never feels overwhelmed or confused. The descriptions are so vivid--from the environmentalist tracking lynx paw prints through the snow to the vacationing company president staking out a Disney World pay phone as he receives updates on the 1998 fire's damage--that they remain fixed in the reader's mind as the story unfolds. It's a story that makes interesting reading for skiers, environmentalists, or anyone intrigued by the unfolding drama in our last wild places. --Jodi Mailander Farrell
Book Description
In October, 1998 an arson caused $12 million in damage at Vail, the country's largest ski area. A shadowy radical environmental group called the Earth Liberation Front claimed credit for what the FBI called the costliest act of ecoterrorism in U.S. history. But as it turns out, credible suspects were everywhere, since Vail was owned by a New York investment firm that had alienated a wide swath of Colorado's high country residents."Who couldn't have done this?" wondered a local sheriff's investigator. More than a clever whodunit, Powder Burn scrapes away the glitz of America's premier ski destination to reveal a cautionary tale about runaway opulance and rapid change in the New West. As the Denver Post put it, "Vail is a microcosm of the disputes over growth raging across the Rockies, and Glick's take on the fire helps to fan the flames." Packed with odd characters and paranoia, with beautiful mountains and despicable actions, Powder Burn is about corporate greed, the environment, a small town and a mysterious unsolved crime. As Vail celebrates its fortieth anniversary with a full season of hoopla and self-promotion, this book makes compelling reading for skiers, true crime enthusiasts, or anyone interested in the environmental, social, and political issues raised by the evolution of the new West.
Customer Reviews:
Intriguing, but too much vulgarity and profanity.......2004-01-28
The book is interesting as an unsolved mystery, but everyone cannot be as guilty as they sound. I struggled a bit with the writing, and did not like all of the vulgarity and profanity. It did not add anything to the book, except to make me feel like I was overhearing conversations in a cheap bar. It was also apparent from the start that Glick does not like rich people (some peoople might call them successful). He could hardly talk about them in a civil tone. He used phrases like "Outrageous luxury", and "Trophyest of trophy homes."
Powder Burn.......2003-05-15
Powder Burn was a GREAT book that provided me with the information that i needed to know about the mystery of who tourched vail. I learned some stuff in my political geography class about this that is what got me interested in it and made me read it. I recommend it to all people who like mystery books with a small twist of history.
Rocky Mountain Whodunnit.......2002-08-08
Vail/Beaver Creek is probably my favorite vacation spot on earth in the summertime...about the only time of year I can afford it (and even then barely). This is a fascinating book, part history of Vail, part meditation on the issues surrounding growth in the affluent west (ie, how a resort for the rich and famous affects the locals and the environment), but largely a whodunnit surrounding the 1998 arson on Vail Mountain.
I wouldn't go so far at to call this a "Rocky Mountain version of "Midnight in the Garden of Good and Evil' " - Glick's writing isn't that smooth and his character development isn't that deep. But I am fascinated by this part of the country and it's a good story that he has to work with. In the end he presents all the available evidence and lets you draw your own conclusions - probably the best way to end considering that the arson itself remains unsolved.
Great Title, Great Epilogue.......2001-08-12
My room mate asked me why it was taking so long to read this book, and my reply was that it was hard to stumble through Glick's clumsy writing. My interest, however, lay in my previous residency in CO and my interest in the subject, so I struggled through the chapters (many with very clever titles). I lived near Telluride for several years, and watched many of the same actions take place as did in Vail, re: the disparity of money and living conditions and in the attitudes of the haves and have-nots. Environmental issues are just one of the many issues in combat with residents and eco-groups against many of these new conglomerate ski companies, some with owners based far from operations.
Glick does a great job with the interviews and investigation; but his long, run-on sentences left much to be desired. If I didn't have an interest in his viewpoint on the subject, I would have put the book down in the third chapter. If you want the gist of it all, just read the epilogue, which - IMO - contains the best information and most well-written part of the book. This, alone, is worth the money, as well as the information. I'll never drive past Vail again without remembering the issues and the personal stories in this book.
Long live the lynx.
Powder Burn.......2001-07-10
Dan Glick writes an impressive highly interesting treatise on the 1998 arsons on Vail Mountain. This book not only covers the fires but also the money lust and greed of Vail Associates (VA) and serves as a political-social commentary on big business in small Colorado mountain towns. For Coloradans and residents of the Rocky Mountain west, those interested in current social activism, and money hungy Wall Street-ers this is a must read.

Pitch Black's anthologies: a pleasant surprise.......2007-06-15
Sages and Swords (edited by Daniel E. Blackston) was the second pleasant reading surprise for me in a week. I was about to go to the field and needed something to read in my off time. Since I didn't have anything new in my usual series, and wasn't in the mood to reread anything, I thought about taking a crack at the Pitch Black anthologies. Flashing Swords was pretty good the few times I'd made time to check it (that's not a reflection on my interest or the quality of that e-zine, it's because I'm just not one of those reader that enjoys to read on a computer screen)...I figured it was worth the risk. If it seems like I was predisposed to be less than impressed, well, I was. Neither this nor Lords of Swords were published by "big name" houses, I only recognized a couple of the names in the Table of Contents, they were trade paperback sized...I'm sure I'm not the only one so reticent. However, I'm happy to say that my hesitations were completely unfounded and that I enjoyed the hell out of both of them. All of the stories in this one were good, but I particularly enjoyed those of Stiennon, Felts, Tarbox, Nazarian and Jones. Not to make this sound like a CD you buy for just one song, you can enjoy this anthology in its entirety. Don't take my word for it though: order one of them. You'll probably wind up getting the other.
sages of Swords revives action fantasy adventure.......2006-05-26
Daniel E. Blackstone's Sages & Swords: Razor-edged Arcanum is packed full of the sort of fast-paced, action-filled, fun fantasy that you just don't hardly see anymore. After reading this book you will wonder why. Fourteen Sword and Sorcery thrillers from writers as well known as Tanith Lee and Harold Lamb to newer ones you've probably never heard of, but should have. Tucked behind these are a few articles of interest mostly to the novice writer but the meat of this volume is in the stories.
Starting with Joeseph A. McCullogh V's "The Gates of Katawael" and running right through to the reprint of Harold Lamb's 1933 novella "The Golden Horde" with nary a mistep in between this book is a treasure for lovers of fantasy and for readers who used to love fantasy but don't really seem to enjoy it anymore. Sage's will bring fantasy back into your world.
The best stories in the book, for me, were Robert J Santa's "Game of the Krillhitchkin"- a nicely done tale about a dragon and a wizard, Barbra Tarbox's "Detour At Abbinford" and Howard Andrew Jones's "The Thief of Hearts" but truly there's hardly a weak tale here. Some fantasy fans may be a bit put off at the Lamb novella, at fifty-five pages easily the longest peice in the book, and historical adventure with no real magic in evidence in it, but once you start that one you will forget all that as you discover one of the great masters of the adventure tale at the height of his prowess. There is plenty of sorcery in the other tales to make up for Lamb's lack and no one writes a better adventure.
Sages is more than a long evening's read, the stories here will have you coming back again and again. A worthy follow-up to Pitch-Blacks earlier Lords of Swords anthology, this one will have you seeking out that earlier, excellent work. I can not reccommend it highly enough.
Sword & Sorcery Rides Again! .......2006-05-19
This is the second anthology compiled by Daniel E. Blackston of Pitch-Black Books, following the enjoyable Lords of Swords. While some of the same authors are in this book, we meet none of their previous characters. It's an all-new cast swinging swords, facing demons, conversing with gods, and stealing fabulous gems. There is much to entertain here, provided by a wide range of writing skills. You'll find established classics and first-time works. I found five of the stories to be spectacular, containing characters that I'm eager to interact with again. There were only two offerings that I found lacking. Of added interest are two articles on fantasy writing, one regarding realism in fantasy writing and one to help aspiring fantasy authors become acquainted with their market. In addition, there is a great interview with R. A. Salvatore. I've seen some complaints on a few forums about these articles stealing space from more short stories that could have been included, but I found the articles to be good reads and beneficial to me as a novice writer. My advice to those not interested in writing fantasy - don't read the articles. Just enjoy the fantastical stories. I found Sages & Swords to be a great delight and would recommend it to my friends.
The 5 stories that moved me most were:
Ed Knight's "The Morgwa", a terrific tale of a warrior's sacrifice to do what is right, what he must, without knowing if it will even be enough. This is the code of honor and sense of duty no matter what common to all warriors. I can envision Etu's life, the spirit-warrior constantly on guard, always protecting his people - all without their knowledge; in fact, in their ignorance, with their scorn.
Rob Santa's "Game of the Krillihitchkin" is a very intelligently well-written story. I found myself rooting first for one character, then the other, then both, then finally for the ultimate winner of the game. I liked that I could picture myself there in the cave with your characters, a quiet observer.
"The Sultan's Well" by Sean Stiennon is an engaging, well-paced story, smoothly written. A straight-forward action tale with a practical and capable protagonist, it is a good read that I envision as part of a larger work.
Vera Nazarian and "Demonkiller" are wonderful! This is a very intersting tale that introduces Agnias, the best character in Sages & Swords! I thought the first half of the story to be great, with a good beginning, set-up, and character description. The second half did seem to taper off a bit, but never lost me for an instant. I definitely want to follow the story of Agnias' life.
"The Ugly Truth", by Michael Boatman, is a fun read! I liked this story a lot, although it took a little work to get into, as the presentation of information at the beginning was somewhat confusing. Once I understood things, however, the story built up quite well and ended strongly. And I got to meet Molo, the character who gives Agnias a run for her money as the best character in the anthology! What could be better than an unpretentious, unperfect, even unknowing, hero?
I read every word in the book and applaud each of the contributing authors for their works. Congratulations to the outstanding duos of publisher and editor David and Daniel, and artists Storn and Loren for their efforts.

Fitness trainer Jorge Cruise has helped 3 million cyberspace clients lose weight, and now he's headed for your bookshelf with the same goal in mind. In just eight minutes a day, says Cruise, you can drop two pounds of fat per week, change your shape, and gain muscle and energy. His secret formula: an inspirational "wake-up talk," followed by strength training two muscle groups per day, eating according to his "eating card" program, and keeping a journal. For exercise, Cruise presents a varied, 28-day program of illustrated exercises using dumbbells. Why the emphasis on strength training? While aerobics burns calories while you're exercising, adding muscle revs up fat burning at rest by increasing your metabolic rate. Every pound of muscle you gain burns an extra 50 calories per day. You'll look better and feel younger and more energetic, resulting in more activity, burning more calories, he says. Cruise's eating plan emphasizes "good" (omega) fats, complex carbohydrates, high-quality protein (low in saturated fat), and vegetables, with dairy, fruits, and "treats and cravings" in moderation. His "Eating Card System" gives you an allotment of portions from each of the food groups. If you're the kind who likes the regimentation of following a specific program every day, Cruise will get you moving, eating better, and losing weight. --Joan Price

Customer Reviews:
It Works!.......2007-08-07
I purchased the book over 2 years ago and it collected dust on my bookshelf. Just a little over 3 weeks ago I decided to use the program. I have to say that IT WORKS! My clothes are much looser and I've lost 5lbs. give or take. The eating portion I'm tweaking but if I were to follow it precisely I'm sure I would've lost more. The book is worth the price and Jorge is very encouraging with the daily talks noted in the book. I highly recommend this book for anyone struggling with losing weight!
very efficient.......2007-07-26
I have contemplated this book for about 2years, I hesitated to spend 12 dollars on yet another excercise plan that probably wouldn't work. I found the book on the bargain rack 2 1/2 weeks ago so I got it. I have not followed his eating plan, I was going to ease into that. Instead, I have cut back on carbs and tried to add more lean protein. I also allow myself one day per week to eat those things I was craving. This helps me stay on track the rest of the week. The excercise are fairly easy, I like the abilty to use different weights and the variety of muscle groups worked is great. By the end of the first week my husband said he thought I had lost weight, I said nah, it's only been a week. At the end of week 2 I had to agree that I lost at least 2 pounds. My goal is to lose 10 lbs. This is the first time that I have tried to loose weight and actually succeeded!
Very motivating!.......2007-07-13
I found this book on sale at a bookstore for $2.50. I had seen it before in my book club and it caught my interest. I bought the book...and read the entire book that evening! I did not realize how strength training can reshape your body. I was convinced! So, I took the book to work with me the next day and showed it to my best friend. I went back to the bookstore that night (a 60 minute drive) to buy the last copy for my friend so we could do this together. We made copies of the food cards and stapled them together (very similar to WW points trackers) and vowed to wake up 15 minutes earlier to exercise. We shared our love/hate relationship with Jorge daily. Several weeks after following the program, my mom told me that she could tell a difference in my arms--that they were more defined. My friend and I followed the program for several weeks--11 or 12. We both lost weight, but not the 2 pounds a week. Since Jorge, we have both aquired different jobs. It's funny though--when we talk, we still bring up Jorge. Our books have been leant to friends and although we do not daily follow his program anymore, we both think this is a very valuable book. The exercises are the best part. I now follow the WW plan for diet, but his exercises are really great! Super book! (I have 3 of Jorge's 8 Minutes books and believe this to be the best).
Great Exercise--I'll Pass on the Diet.......2007-06-28
I love the exercise plans in Jorge Cruise's books, but I really dislike the somewhat dishonest way the dieting aspect is presented: he says aerobics and dieting are out and adding lean muscle is in. Granted. I agree whole heartedly. But, he then proceeds to recommend a VERY low calorie diet. And, he goes on to say that your newly added muscle will be burning 2 lbs. per week. Yes, I agree: add that muscle back and you will rev up your metabolism and burn off the fat. That is why I bought his book in the first place. But, then why does he put us on a diet (the very thing he said doesn't work??). The diet alone is restrictive enough to cause the 2 lb. a week of weight loss, folks, without doing any exercise at all.
Having bashed the diet plan, I really do like the concept of adding simple strength training exercise on a almost daily basis, and certainly at least three times a week. I am not a big fan of cardio and the way it can't really reshape your body, but I do add 3 days of 20 minutes for heart health.
Bottom line: if you're looking for a way to add some simple, and effective exercise to your life, by all means I recommend Jorge Cruise's books. The theory is good. It is the very restrictive diet that I have a problem with especially in view of his blatant statement that diets don't work and diets are out. It seems that you are working at cross purposes here: trying to rev up the metabolism with added muscle while semi-starving the body enough to get it to go into starvation mode and slow down the whole process. I think the far better way to eat is to calculate the calories necessary to maintain your goal weight and start eating at that amount. For me, that would be around 1500 calories, based on doing almost no exercise. Whatever your goal weight, the calories to maintain it will be a reduction under what you are currently eating and will lead to weight loss, but will not be so restrictive as to cause your body to go into starvation mode. Lean Bodies has a good diet plan that has worked for me in the past. That plan starts women at 1500 calories a day and men at about 1800. It is a low fat diet recommending lean protein, some carbs and lots of veggies at each meal. For me, that plan, coupled with Cruise's exercise are a really sane approach to the diet/exercise dilemma.
i am pleased with this book.......2007-04-23
this book gives you a good plan to change your life and eat healthier and exercise daily. the exercises and eating plan are both pretty easy to follow and as long as you follow it, you do lose weight. i am pleased that i purchased this book and would recommend it to others.

Book is better.......2007-05-06
I like having the cards but you need to buy the book, I would not recommend this kit over the book. I have both and follow the book daily but also like having the nice cards in front of me. The book has lots of info not in this kit. Let's say it's a good but not necessary companion!
great product.......2005-09-11
I exercise regularly and have used several different programs. With four kids and one on the way, I often have a hard time squeezing in time to spend an hour at a time working with weights. This is a great alternative if you want to stay in shape but don't want to spend hours a week working out.
I also love that there is a great variety of exercises. You won't get bored and if you do it right, you'll work up a sweat.
The cards are good quality and the directions are easy to follow. I'd recommend this program to any busy mom (or dad, or college student...etc).
Good exercise program.......2005-01-22
I am already on the South Beach diet, so I purchased this kit to add strength training to my routine. I have been using the 8 minutes in the morning kit for two weeks now, and I already feel stronger. I like the kit a lot, because I am able to take out the cards I need for the next day and set them out with the dumbells as a visual reminder. My guess is that the book is harder to stick to. I didn't pay much attention to the CD, and the diet seems a little odd, but then again I didn't try it. I did tape a before picture and a motivational after picture in the little booklet that came with it, and that is really helpful. 8 minutes may not seem like a lot, and it really isn't, but it does add up to 48 minutes a week, which isn't too shabby. I think this program is a great easy way to fit exercise into your daily routine.
On week 2.......2004-03-09
I am on week 2 of the kit, and I haven't seen any changes. I think that this program is really meant for persons who are really out of shape...I just wanted to firm up and lose maybe 5 lbs. The diet would probably be hard for people who overeat, but since I eat fairly well, I don't think it was much of a change from what I already eat.
Even though I haven't lost any weight, I do plan on continuing the weight training. Haven't noticed any changes in muscle, but I definitely feel sore after some days...so it must be doing something!
8 Minutes in the Morning Kit.......2004-03-01
Bought this product. It's sensible, helpful and mindful of the time that people don't have for getting into shape. The only gripes I've got are the UK price, £13.00 plus instead of $13.00 plus dollars and the presentation. The green, yellow and brown undermine the message on the kit. Instead of get fit, the presentation is more like a 50s version of how to be a frump in 30 seconds, which most people do effortlessly! Those colours need changing!
Book Description
The authors of Atomic Cocktails strike again, this time with a feminine twist. Highballs High Heels combines '50s cocktail party nostalgia with career girl independence. Order up a Bikinitini when you're feeling sassy, get naughty with a cool Gin and Sin, or a Shirley Temple's Evil Twin, for those times when you just want to be left alone. And for girls with "inner" spirit, there's an entire chapter devoted to nonalcoholic drinks. In addition to the 50 fabulous swizzle-stick sensations and an essential essay on women and the art of drinking with style, this guide is also bursting with hip party-planning ideas for cocktail soirées, dinners, and summer bashes, including a how-to section for setting up a swanky bar at home. Highballs High Heels is perfect for any woman longing to release her hidden grrrlll.

Girls Just Want to Have Fun (and Cocktails Too)!.......2006-06-01
What a cool, fun book! I picked this book up as a bachelorette gift for a friend and was not disappointed. What a hoot! I loved the titles of the cocktails, and it was fun to read the descriptions of the recipes and the background of each. The colorful pictures really added to the book, and the information regarding garnishes, infusions, and syrups was excellent.
Some of our favorites included: Silky Stockings, Hot Lips, Choco Locos, Creamsicle Margarita, Bad Hair Day Blaster, and Power Shower Punch. Enjoy!
Drink retro style....cheers!!.......2005-08-12
My favorite parts of the book are the very retro names for the majority of the drinks. I am a fresh and new martini drinker and my boyfriend bought this book for me. Some of the drinks are familiar but tagged with different names many others are different and unheard of. This book outlines the necessities you'll need to get started. But Even for the novice martini drinker (like myself), you'll me mixing and shaking like a pro in no time.
hip and sophisticated.......2001-11-30
"Highballs High Heels" is what it says: a smart, witty cocktail guide for girls (and the authors mean anyone female, not just the young 'uns). I own this book and "Atomic Cocktails" by the same writers, and both are terrific, but "Highballs" is funkier and less basic, though still very easy to use. "Highballs" is not exclusively for women, but then, neither is "When Harry Met Sally"- it's just unlikely that men will have the same appreciation for these that we do. With recipes like Minivan Mom Meltdown Mixer and Shirley Temple's Evil Twin, these recipes are as much fun to read as they are to make. The graphics are so cool that it practically qualifies as a coffee-table book. "Highballs in High Heels" is now the first book I grab when I have the yen for a cocktail- you really can't go wrong.
...as well as a boys guide........2001-11-29
OK so maybe I like to wear high heels every once in a while, but that's not the only reason why I thoroughly enjoyed this book. The simple and articulate writing, the flow of the layout from page to page and the tasteful vintage-like illustrations makes this book a really great gift or just to own for yourself.
Here are a few reasons why I love this book.
#1 It looks a lot cooler than having the Sports Illustrated (Swim Suit edition) laying around.
#2 It shows that I am sensitive to certain women's issues.
#3 I finally learned how to make a decent drink.
#4 It impressed all my gay friends as well as my female friends and left all my buddies wondering (gotta love that!)
#5 It shows how I can be in touch my feminine side.
Highballs High Heels is for everyone to anyone.
A beautiful book with a very practical nature.
Do not let the title fool you.
If you are a pseudofeminist then this book is for you.......2001-07-17
Before I read this book the complicated art of mixing drinks simply made my head spin. All those gadgets and gizmos, LORDY. Now I have it all...a career and the ability to please a house full of freeloaders while wearing heels and burning my bra.
