I've promised myself for the past decade that, when I finally retire, my first major project will be to reread the entire Nero Wolfe canon in chronological order, a worthwhile occupation if ever there was one.

Although entirely different and not nearly as literary as Ross Macdonald's Lew Archer series or the Philip Marlowe novels of Raymond Chandler, the Wolfe saga deserves to be ranked with them as among the finest series of detective stories ever written by an American. Fer-de-lance introduces the brilliant, idiosyncratic, and obese armchair detective to the world and, while it may not be the best book of the series, it provides a wonderful murder set on a golf course and a cast of characters and laundry list of eccentricities that are an integral part of each novel and novella.

Rex Stout has managed to pull off a feat unparalleled to this day: the perfect combination of deductive reasoning--as exemplified by the classic Golden Age writers such as Christie, Sayers, Van Dine, and Queen--with the hard-boiled attitude and dialogue of the more realistic tough guy writers such as Chandler, Macdonald, Hammett, and Robert B. Parker.

The toughness is brought to the books by Wolfe's leg man and amanuensis, Archie Goodwin. The structure and ambience of the books is, quite deliberately, very much like the Sherlock Holmes stories that Stout so admired. The house on West 35th Street is as familiar as the sitting room at 221B Baker Street; his cook Fritz pops up as regularly as Mrs. Hudson; and his irritant, Inspector Cramer of the NYPD, serves the same role as several Scotland Yard detectives, notably Inspector Lestrade, did for Holmes. Fair warning: It is safe to read one Nero Wolfe novel, because you will surely like it. It is extremely unsafe to read three, because you will forever be hooked on the delightful characters who populate these perfect books. --Otto Penzler

Book Description

As any herpetologist will tell you, the fer-de-lance is among the most dreaded snakes known to man.  When someone makes a present of one to Nero Wolfe, Archie Goodwin knows he's getting dreadully close to solving the devilishly clever murders of an immigrant and a college president.  As for Wolfe, he's playing snake charmer in a case with more twists than an anaconda -- whistling a seductive tune he hopes will catch a killer who's still got poison in his heart.

4 out of 5 stars Remarkable.......2007-07-07

This book is remarkable in two ways. One is in how consistent the writing has been in the series, and the second is how true the television series on A & E had been in presenting the stories.

Unless you checked the chronology, or nitpicked throughout the story, most readers would not be able to find any discontinuity or breaks in flow or inconsistency in style in this story. I was hard pressed to believe that this is the first book in the series. Rex Stout made no special effort to introduce the characters that we all know and love in this book. They were introduced, but to no great fanfare, very little background was given, yet he was able to get the reader involved in the plot. Archie starts out in his inimitable style, as does Nero Wolfe. The intelligence, was there, the styling is there, and the eccentricities are there.

I came to the Nero Wolfe mysteries through the A & E series: Nero Wolfe - The Complete First Season and Nero Wolfe - The Complete Second Season. It struck me while reading this book as to how true to the stories the producers were in putting the same ethos and peculiarities. The furnishings were very well described in the book, and the show did a remarkable job filling in the blank spots.

The story itself was classic Nero Wolfe, lots of thing going on to derail the line of reasoning, yet everything falls together brilliantly. Stout doesn't overly indulge in springing surprises, always a turnoff in a good mystery, nor does he telegraph his hand until the very end. The mystery was well paced and the dialog was clever and streetwise, all at the same time. The book was written in 1933, so one would expect the dialog top be very corny and conspicuous in its datedness, but it wasn't really noticeable, besides, this gives the story a noirish spin that is both entertaining and cool sounding.

This book, being the first book in the series, is an anomalous book because one would expect something that is less than perfect from a first book. Even though this book isn't perfect, it is, however, quite satisfactory.

4 out of 5 stars Clever Dialog with So-So Mystery.......2007-06-25

Nero Wolfe is one of the most famous detectives in fiction. Wolfe is a genius for solving murders but that is not what makes these books worth reading. It is Wolfe's eccentricities combined with the narration of Wolfe's assistant, Archie Goodwin. Rex Stout displays clever and funny writing (especially the dialogs), to keep the story moving. Nero Wolfe is, of course, the incredibly obese detective who rarely leaves his apartment in Manhattan but sends Archie Goodwin, (his hardboiled, skirt-chasing assistant) to gather evidence for him so that Wolfe can sit in his chair and solve the case.

Fer-De-Lance is the first book in the Nero Wolfe series (there are 73 in the series) and it is amazing how fully developed the characters were even in this first book. It has been said that that you can pick up any of the novels in any order and you won't feel out of place. In this story, Wolfe is short of money (a perennial problem as he lives in an expensive apartment, with a chef, a gardener to maintain his precious orchids, and Archie on staff). Wolfe first needs to find a case that can pay him enough and he is lucky enough to find a convenient murder and even better he has a clue that the police don't have as he knows another murder is linked to the first. Slowly, and yet inexorably, Wolfe reels in the murderer and solves the case.

But solving the murder is only a small part of the story. It is the narration of Archie Goodwin, the wonderful dialog, and the uniqueness of Nero Wolfe, that make this a fun story to read. There is little mystery in the actual murder but watching Wolfe crack the case and figure out how to get the evidence against the killer is pure joy.

4 out of 5 stars The first, if not best, Wolfe novel.......2007-06-01

Rex Stout didn't just create a character when he thought up Nero Wolfe, but a major franchise that endures to this day. Fer-de-Lance is the beginning of it all where the reader is first introduced to Nero Wolfe, Archie Goodwin, Fritz, Saul Panzer, and the rest of the supporting cast. Introduced may be too strong a word, however, because things pick up as if these characters' adventures had been published many times before. The team is in place and Archie Goodwin actually says that he's been with Wolfe for 7 years so we certainly aren't there for the beginning of the relationship. In this way, Fer-de-Lance is structured much as any other Wolfe novel.

The plot begins with a young woman asking Wolfe to help find her missing brother. We learn pretty quickly that her brother has been killed and shortly thereafter we learn of a second murder that is connected to his. Thus begins the typical process of the murder plot revealing itself layer by layer like until we know who the murderer is. Even though this is the first Wolfe novel, the characters are surprisingly mature and little changed from what you would read in later stories.

It is worth noting, however, that this book does have its shortcomings. First, the snappy patter and humor that is so characteristic of the series is present but not quite as sharp as it would be later. Also, Stout makes an error in pacing the novel as he reveals the murderer to both Wolfe and the reader nearly 100 pages prior to the end of the book. The rest is largely taken up by Archie and Wolfe trying to gather the proof they need to definitively convict the murderer. This made the last part of the book less interesting and when it should have been building up tension for the big reveal, it is instead a bit tired despite a slightly unexpected outcome in the finale. On a petty note, this edition is also marred by several typographical errors that are largely unimportant but always irritating and the editors should have caught them.

All in all, Fer-de-Lance is well worth reading for a fan of Nero Wolfe but I would not recommend it as an introduction to someone who has never read one of his novels. There are others that are more entertaining (e.g. Some Buried Caesar) and there is nothing here that you need to know to enjoy the stories written subsequently. Save this one until after you've read a few and are curious about how it all started.

4 out of 5 stars delightful book, annoying typos in this edition.......2007-05-29

After watching the Nero Wolfe episodes from A & E, brilliantly rendered by Timothy Hutton and company, I am finally getting around to reading these terrific books. I am starting at the beginning, and am enjoying myself enormously. According to many readers and Amazon reviewers, I have a lot to look forward to, because they get even better than this book. Hooray! But one star off and a poke in the eye to Bantam Crime Line. There are irritating and unnecessary typos in this edition. These wonderful books, and their fans! deserve better.

3 out of 5 stars All the elements are here. They just need a bit of polish........2007-02-19

FER-DE-LANCE is our introduction to the realm of Nero Wolfe and his capable assistant Archie Goodwin. Al, the elements are here, the office, Fritz and his culinary skills, Theodore and the orchids, and the general idea of Wolfe's eccentricities are well-conveyed. There are a few oddities, like Saul Panzer being on salary and Archie lacking the sophistication he shows later, that are forgotten as the series continues, but the overall tone is set. The mystery itself with a rather far-fetched murder is not the strongest, neither are the loose ends left dangling, some kind of denouement for Carla Maffei perhaps, and some rather unfortunate stereotyping make this one of the weaker outings, but there is definitely enough here to make Nero Wolfe a character that mystery lovers will be willing to follow for many years to come.

When a fer-de-lance, one of the most dreaded snakes known to man, is given to Nero Wolfe, Archie knows he's getting very close to solving the clever murders of an immigrant and a college president. Book Description

T.E. Bearden claims in this work that the Soviet Union developed scalar electromagnetic technology during the Cold War. He discusses how Nikola Tesla originally elucidated the theory of scalar electromagnetics at the turn of the century, but was largely ignored in the west. The Soviets however, saw the utility of Tesla's theories and applied them to the development of weapons of mass distruction heretofore unseen in the western world. The author explains both the theories involved and details about the successful Soviet weapons projects.

                  5 out of 5 stars VERY INTERESTING.......1999-07-31

Seemed to explain a lot of things that are taking place in the Pacific Northwest and Southern States right now. Also the thoughts about magnetic propulsion without fuel are very thought provoking, since I have seen this demonstrated in the form of an electrical generator, which ran for a year without any energy consumption, except the use of the electromagnetic waves supplied by the Earth's rotation and gravity. Too bad Tom Edison beat Nikoli out in the energy race electricity might be much less expensive today.

5 out of 5 stars A revelation of Russian use of the HAARP capabilities........1999-02-01

Tells how Russia was ahead of the USA in perfecting our HAARP technology. Has pictures of the weapons and protective devices created from the low frequency technology of Tesla.

3 out of 5 stars Weird science describes super weapons.......1996-05-22

This book is presented as a set of presentation slides that describe a tremendous weapons capability developed by the Russians based on a solution to the grand unification of forces. Supposedly the weapons use the theories to create gravitational beams which penetrate armor and then convert into electromagnetic beams frying the insides of tanks and missiles. A lot of doubtful assumptions go into making the theory work and the supporting evidence is questionable. I have to rate the book as neutral. It is definately bad science but I'm not sure yet that its goal was to be good science

In Guinevere, Sharan Newman told us the story of that lovely and legendary woman's childhood up until her wedding night. Guinevere is now the beautiful young wife and queen of King Arthur, a position much-coveted by all women of Camelot. But nothing in life is ever certain, and soon Guinevere discovers--most alarmingly--her deep and passionate love for another man: Lancelot, the most beloved Knight of the Round Table in all of Camelot. Here Sharan Newman brings the legend of Lancelot and Guinevere to life with the same blend of magic and history that has made her Catherine LeVendeur medieval mystery series such a success. As ambitious and striking as The Mists of Avalon and The Hollow Hills, The Chessboard Queen is a beautiful rendering of the world's most timeless romance, a tale of earthly passion and spiritual love like no other before or since.

3 out of 5 stars A bit better than the first installment.......2003-06-05

Newman did a little better with this second part of her trilogy than she did with the first book. While the writing is still very simplistic and many characters remain undeveloped, I found a bit of interest in the subcharacters. Guinevere continues to be a self-absorbed dimwit but at least the unicorn is finally gone. How in the world the unicorn gave it's love of Guinevere to Lancelot is still a mystery to me. It seemed to be nothing more than Newman's weak effort to get rid of the unicorn character - for which I was grateful. Let's see - there are so many silly points...Lancelot goes insane because Guinevere has suffered a flashback of post tramatic stress disorder involving her long dead nurse Flora. However, we had no idea that the Flora episode ever bothered Guinevere in the first place. Luckily Lancelot is saved by the Lady of the Lake and then suddenly gives up his efforts to find his birth mother. Guinevere's brother who returned from "the dead" vanishes from the story opting to live in the wilderness where he has no contact with the rest of Britian...or with the author apparently because she completely forgets about those poor people living in the wilderness. Sound scattered? Sound childish? IT IS! However, Arthur's character was somewhat interesting. It kept me ready....I'm not quite sure why.

                  2 out of 5 stars terrible.......2003-05-08

When I bought this book I thought it would be a story about Guinevere being torn between two men. As far as I can see she didn't love Arthur at all. As another reviewer said, she's spoiled, selfish and an airhead. Lancelot also gets on my nerves. Ugh. I am disappointed in this book because most of the other novels that I've read that involve the Arthur/Guinevere/Lancelot love triangle are at least interesting. This one wasn't, sadly.

                  4 out of 5 stars Very Passionate.......2000-08-31

I loved this book. I have always been intrigued by the legend of Sir Lancelot and Lady Guinevere, it was nice to actually read exactly what I wanted to read without all the garbage that goes with it.

2 out of 5 stars A mixed bag, even for Arthurian romance lovers........1998-06-21

I was disappointed with this novel, which I expected to be "a beautiful rendering of the world's most timeless romance," as the cover advertises. Aside from Arthur and Gawain, few characters are likeable or well-drawn. The characters themselves seem to spend most of the novel being exasperated with one another. Merlin is not wise or admirable, just hypocritical in his hostility to Guinevere for her selfishness. As for her, why would any reader be captivated by a spoiled, conventionally gorgeous airhead with a phobia of blood? Or a bunch of shallow relationships, few of which make much emotional sense? Readers find two things compelling: mystery and struggle. We would love to see truly deep female character wrestle with jealousy or, say, conflicted love for two men. This element is what keeps many readers absorbed in, and called back several times to, Bradley's The Mists of Avalon. Unfortunately in The Chessboard Queen what we get is a couple of whiners (Elaine was one too) complaining about their lives and inexplicably drawn to a ridiculous caricature of knighthood, the rather stupid Lancelot character. The only struggle here was the reader's, to try not to skip too many chapters. Not astoundingly well-written, or vivid, and with few if any memorable scenes (to be fair, transport and viewing of the Round Table were pretty effective). As a period piece, pretty superficial. But it passes the time, I guess. END

                  Book Description

Over the past thirty-five years, Between Parent and Child has helped millions of parents around the world strengthen their relationships with their children. Written by renowned psychologist Dr. Haim Ginott, this revolutionary book offered a straightforward prescription for empathetic yet disciplined child rearing and introduced new communication techniques that would change the way parents spoke with, and listened to, their children. Dr. Ginott’s innovative approach to parenting has influenced an entire generation of experts in the field, and now his methods can work for you, too.

In this revised edition, Dr. Alice Ginott, clinical psychologist and wife of the late Haim Ginott, and family relationship specialist Dr. H. Wallace Goddard usher this bestselling classic into the new century while retaining the book’s positive message and Haim Ginott’s warm, accessible voice. Based on the theory that parenting is a skill that can be learned, this indispensable handbook will show you how to:
                  • Discipline without threats, bribes, sarcasm, and punishment
                  • Criticize without demeaning, praise without judging, and express anger without hurting
                  • Acknowledge rather than argue with children’s feelings, perceptions, and opinions
                  • Respond so that children will learn to trust and develop self-confidence

5 out of 5 stars Who was Dr Spock???.......2007-09-18

I so agree with you. My childhood was not exactly a fairytail story. And I was scared that I wasn't going to be a good parent. But, I was going to change that! My husband and I brought 3 little boys into the big world in 3 years. They were going to be great, fantastic, successful human beings. Dr. Spock just wasn't cutting it in my world. What did he say again??? Then, I heard Dr Hiam Ginott on tv and knew I had to get his book. I watched him every time he was on tv. He was good. Then he died. That is too bad because even my children's parenting generation can learn great details from him. I had friends who commented that they liked my techniques. Mine? Not. Dr Hiam Ginott's.

5 out of 5 stars My favourite parenting book.......2007-02-25

This book is a wonderful addition to any parents' library. I am a child psychiatrist who recommends it frequently to parents. It clearly discusses how important language is in our relationship with our children without being judgmental or preachy. It clearly outlines verbal patterns that many parents get into and helpful strategies to get out of those patterns. The premise is simple --- we need to listen more. However, if you are someone who recognizes this is easier said than done, I recommend reading this book. I get hundreds of books out of the library; there are few that I ultimately purchase. This was one of those few.

2 out of 5 stars Some good info but light on correction.......2007-01-09

I thought there was some good information but I think it was light on correction. While I believe that we need to create a loving, safe, and encouraging environment for our children I also believe that there are times when children defy authority and need to be corrected. This book tries to combat the problem before it happens by the way we communicate with them. Although communication is key to the Parent/child relationship, children need to know that the Parent is in charge, that they must obey the first time and without argument. Don't get me wrong, children are a beautiful blessing from God and they need to be nurtured so carefully. But along with that nurturing comes this demand for obedience because I am their authority. The book was light on parental authority and presented parents merely as guides in a child's life rather than an authority to be obeyed and to protect them. I think our society could use a bit more respect for authority.

5 out of 5 stars Best Parenting Book I've Read.......2006-08-18

The whole premise of the book is that love and common sense are not enough to raise most children well. Good parenting skills need to be *learned*. This book gives terrific examples of good and not so good parenting with each topic it covers. I've read at least a dozen parenting books (I have a very "highly spirited" 9 year old boy) and this one has made a big difference for me in my parenting. The emphasis on validating children's feelings somehow resonated better with me with this book than others, I think because the authors are particularly gifted in presenting the child's perspective. Using just a couple of the techniques in the book, I have been able to keep my son's emotional outbursts to a minimum -- and therefore my own, too. Better for me, and clearly better for him! I understand him better now.

5 out of 5 stars Wish I Had This Sooner.......2006-03-18

My first visit with my daughter after I read this & I used one of the principles learned. Instead of her being mad at me for days because of my reaction to a situation, she was mad at me for 5 minutes.

Get this book, it will save you hours, days, years of grief and your child will be much the better for it.

4 out of 5 stars Great for all phases of your life!.......2007-08-27

I purchased this book in December of 2005 and am still religiously using it at least once a week. I do agree with another woman that left the comment that the recipes take much longer to make than the estimated times given in the book and that the recipes make much more than the recommended serving size. All in all though this is by far my favorite cook book - I know that we are eating healthy and that we are eating a variety of food groups. I also like expanding my cooking knowledge and using the ingredients that are uncommon!

5 out of 5 stars we love this cookbook.......2006-01-08

We love this cookbook. The nutritional info is great and the recipes are delish. My husband and I like it so much that we use it even when I'm not expecting.

4 out of 5 stars Good Addition to My Cookbook Shelf - Husband Happy Too!.......2005-03-07

THE PREGNANCY COOKBOOK is a good book, but not a great cookbook. It consists of two main sections, the first on nutrition and the second on recipes, plus appendices that list which recipes are particularly rich in each of four key nutrients (iron, folic acid, fiber and calcium). The Nutrition section contains good, readable information on nutrition. Even if you already have a good command of nutritional basics, as I did, this is good material.

The Recipes section is what I bought THE PREGNANCY COOKBOOK for, and what I give mixed reviews to. On the plus side, there are some very good, very nutritious recipes in here, including a number of dishes my husband gives an enthusiastic thumbs-up to. Issues I have with the recipes:
                  - Some of these recipes took me 1 1/2 - 2 hours to prepare, at least the first time. The time estimate given was nowhere close to that.
                  - The author's short time estimates for prep time either assume that you already have everything peeled and chopped/sliced or that you prep foods much faster than I do. Perhaps they are based on your having a food processor?
                  - Many recipes contain ingredients that I cannot easily find in a mainstream grocery store.
                  - Uncommon ingredients are not always glossed with an explanation, and no substitution is offered. For example, a recipe using pappardelle looked appealing. I had a vague idea that pappardelle was a type of pasta. Googling it confirmed that for me, and also let me know that fettuccine is a workable substitute. Checking at my grocery store, I found that indeed we do not have pappardelle, and I will be trying that recipe with fettuccine.
                  - Not all recipes are as well written a set of instructions as they could be. For example, starting the water for pasta was listed as step 7 of 8 on one recipe I tried last week. Fortunately, I preread the recipe and realized that needed to be step 1. Another recipe had me scrambling when it told me to do something with "the vegetables," except that it turned out that "the vegetables" did not include the red peppers, which were being reserved for another step.
                  - Serving sizes seem to be overly generous. Recipes described as providing "four main course servings" offer more like six at my house. I don't mind this a lot, but I have learned to plan for lots of leftovers when using these recipes.
                  - Sections could have been more clearly labeled visually. Finding the first trimester recipes was easy enough, but the only way to find the low calorie first trimester recipes is to find the end of the section and then flip forwards to look for the page that states that the low cal recipes start there.
                  - The introduction says that this revised version contains simpler recipes. For me, many of these still seem fairly complex. I use this for a couple of special dishes a week, rather than a source of everyday help. At my house, the pregnant woman is also the cook, so simpler is more of interest to me!

There are some recipes in here that I think are very, very good. If you get THE PREGNANCY COOKBOOK, I recommend trying: potatoes stuffed with spinach and broccoli (p. 195); spaghetti with turkey sausage, red bell peppers, onions and tomatoes (p. 207; my husband loves this); chilled sesame noodles with vegetables (p. 241, another winner with my husband, though we like a less sweet sauce); rigatoni with wild mushroom ragu (p. 244); chicken, broccoli and mushroom stroganoff (p. 247); turkey sausage with white beans, tomatoes and basil (p. 278; we didn't find lean turkey Italian sausage so we use lean turkey sausage and throw in some Italian spices).

As you may be able to guess from that list of recipes, my other comment would be that THE PREGNANCY COOKBOOK has a definite Italian-American slant. There is nothing wrong with that, but you do want to know!

3 out of 5 stars No All Foods Safe--but everything looks delish.......2004-10-18

I looked through this book and while it has some very tasty looking recipies in it, they are no all safe. The goat cheese thing another reviewer brought up is debatable (if it is pasturised or used cooked it should be fine), as is the wine (alcohol does boil off), but the big fish (swordsfish, fresh tuna--or for that matter regular canned tuna more than once a week) that are featured in a number of these recipies are no nos for sure for pregnant women. Mercury poisoning is a VERY serious thing especially in the first trimester, and the big fish are full of it.

That said, if you buy it as an educated pregnant person who knew what to avoid, it looks like it would be great!

2 out of 5 stars Be sure to read the warnings.......2004-04-24

This book is schizophrenic! She (the doctor) wrote the first half, a solid nutritional guide for pregnant women. He (the cook) wrote the recipes -- many of which include wine and goat cheese, items she tells you to avoid! Page 51 warns against feta and goat cheese -- so why do they appear in the recipes at all? And page 52 tells you to be sure to simmer red wine before cooking with it, to remove alcohol, but that warning doesn't show up in the recipes themselves. There are tasty recipes in here that are simple to make, including some good vegetarian ones (spinach fettucine with wild mushroom sauce; penne with swiss chard and pine nuts). But I hope no pregnant women skip the dietary warnings in the beginning, or rely on this book as their sole source of information.
