Good Hard Case Crime Formula read.......2007-09-30
It is another workmanlike example of the new Hard Case Crime series. Once again there is not real hero but there are characters that keep you interested. I have to mention my pet peeve, the jacket blurb leads you to believe there is some humor in the book. This seems to be mandatory these days. There is no humor or wit in the book it's pretty much of a downer (with a late exception). That isn't knocking the book it's knocking the book's marketers. A good popcorn read, you'll like it while your reading and forget it two days later. Great for a trip or a grey weekend with nothing to do.
A cocaine related crime novel that takes place in Miami? No way!.......2007-08-12
I dug DUTCH UNCLE a lot, but it did have a few weak points. Mostly that there isn't any really big twist or turns (not something I always look for, but it couldn't hurt to have ONE surprise in a crime novel).
In the end, though, it's going to be compared to Elmore Leonard and Carl Hiassen by association. This author hold his own though and seems to have his own distinct style, even if it's not such an original story.
Fun read though.
McDonald, Willeford, Leonard....Pavia!.......2006-05-17
Some shmo at the top of this page called Peter Pavia's great modern Miami tale, "Dutch Uncle" a rehashing of Elmore Leonard and Carl Hiaasen. The first mistake is that Hiaasen himself is the weak imitator of Leonard. He takes the outsized characters and laconic elliptic dialogue, throws in an environmental issue, some stock characters, corrupt politicians, mellow leonardian heroes, and everybody says "Genius!"
If you wanna talk about Florida hard-boiled, let's say Dwight MacDonald, Charles Willeford, and our boy Elmore Leonard. And if you're looking for the next great one: here he is: Pavia. This is a Miami that wasn't written about by Leonard, it's a little after his time. This is true 90's and 00's lowlife Florida, the tourist bars, Swamps, vicious Redneck Crackheads, Cuban lady cops with sensible shoes, aspiring fashion models and the creeps that surround them, and lots of cheap cocaine. Florida.
Pavia's next one is supposed to be about the Bay of Pigs, looking forward to it. Historical.
Savor This Book.......2006-03-09
Read this book slowly. Relish every sentence because books like this do not come along often. As a crime fiction writer, I appreciate a good read, I search for it and when I find it (which isn't often) and the book captures me as DUTCH UNCLE did, I savor it. I kid you not. Peter Pavia constructs a tight, page-turning mystery that captured my attention to the last page, the last sentence.
To me the strength of the book is how Peter Pavia never telegraphed his punches and is never predictable. Hell, enough analysis. DUTCH UNCLE is a damn good book from a damn good series of books. Hard Case Crime is redefining our genre ... for the better.
A quick, compelling read.......2005-10-07
Dutch Uncle is a story about making decisions, then living with the consequences of those decisions. Three days out of prison and down on his luck, Harry Healy reluctantly makes a decision to act as a delivery boy in a drug deal between buyer and seller. A simple proposition, thinks our hero, until the manure hits the fan. Making the delivery, he encounters an unruly customer who threatens him with a Colt .45. Quick witted and able bodied, he handles that situation. Returning with the payoff, he finds the seller, one Manfred Pfiser (the "Dutch Uncle" of the title), dead on the floor of the hotel room that served as the dealer's base of operations. Harry finds himself in the middle of the murder investigation, trying to stay one step ahead of the law, and of the thugs who set him up.
Like Mary Poppins, Dutch Uncle is "practically perfect in every way" (I know you were wondering where I was going to take that). Fast paced, well crafted, and, above all, realistic, it's one heck of a read, perfect entertainment for connoisseurs of hard boiled pot boilers. Comparisons to Elmore Leonard and Carl Hiaasen are inevitable, but Pavia's voice is unique, allowing him to carve out his own niche in the wider universe of crime fiction. If you're in the market for a quick, compelling read, Dutch Uncle should fit the bill.

From England to Holland to Africa.......2003-09-18
This book opens with the murder of a small time crook. Patrons in the pub did see the murderer--a man wearing a false beard and dark glasses. Newly promoted Superintendent Henry Tibbett is puzzled by the murder, but even more puzzled by a friend's request to investigate the deaths of two elderly politicians. His friend is convinced the two men, both members of PIFL, a mythical division of the UN or something that solves minor border disbutes, were actually murdered. Henry is not convinced, since there appears to be no logical motive. But he investigates anyway, and soon, finds a link between the death of the crook and the deaths of two men involved in an African border dispute. Two beautiful sisters, one an employee of PIFL and one a frequent visitor to the pub where the man was murdered, know a lot more than they're saying. Henry follows the clues to Holland, accompanied by his wife, Emmy. Emmy should have stayed at home, though, because she become involved in the final confrontation with an international criminal determined to escape one more time.
I enjoyed this murder. The plot is really hard to summarize and probably sounds quite confusing, but it really works out quite well in the book. The pace is a little slow, but once the characters get to the Netherlands it proceeds very quickly. I really like Patricia Moyes. Henry and Emmy are great characters. If you like old-fashioned mysteries without a lot of graphic violence or sex and not as dark as many modern writers, I think you'd like this book. I am only sorry it's not in print.
Book Description

Widowed businesswoman Hetty Henry teams up with young Boston minister Increase "Creasy" Cotton to investigate Colonial Albany for suspects. Could it be the wife, who keeps her own name and her cool at news of her husband's death? Could it be his father-in-law, who detested his philandering son-in-law? Could it possibly be one of his jilted lovers, stolen mistresses, or their husbands? Or could it be blackmail? De Noyes was not above a little extortion. Hetty and Creasy undergo Indian attack, kidnapping and Piracy on the High Hudson before they uncork the criminal with a doctored dram of their own.

Delighted.......2007-05-31
Fans who love mysteries will be delighted with M.E.Kemp's newest book set in early colonial times. You will be surprised the twists and turns of the plot.
Wonderful.......2007-05-31
Loved it. Couldn't put it down. Fast-paced and easy read, history buffs and non-history buffs alike will enjoy it. M.E.Kemp has busted the myth that the puritans were all a stoic and dull bunch. Her characters are anything but, especially sleuth Hetty Henry who is strong and independent (and lusty). Hope there's more to come.
Hetty returns!.......2007-05-19
Our wonderful, independent business woman, Hetty Henry, returns for more adventures in the colonies. This time Hetty leaves the confines of Boston for the wilds of Albany, New York.
The historical references, highlights of life in that time, reveal a much more permissive, less straight-laced society than one might think!
An interesting contrast is presented between Hetty's two "friends", the proper (shall we say clueless?)Creasy Cotton and her gorgeous Native American business partner.
It's an engrossing and fun read, and especially suited to those who enjoy historical mysteries and a peek into those early American times.

Like Father, Like Son.......2005-05-19
Well, not really...
After a five year lapse, roger Zelazny returned to the Amber series that had done so well before. One thing that you will notice in reading these is that the author has matured considerable. If the first five volumes, the story of Corwin, Prince of Amber are a bit simplistic and mostly a fantasy adventure story, this return to Amber is much richer in personalities and sub-plots. Fans who have followed the series so far will find they are in for an even bigger treat.
This time around the narrator is Merlin, son of Corwin. He has taken up residence in earth, gone to college, and even worked as a computer designer. With his father gone wandering, Merlin's connection to Amber is slight. But someone has made an attempt on his life for the past eight April 30th's and Merlin has decided it is time for a change of venue. But not before an ex-girlfriend has her head bitten off and a mage has made an attempt on his life.
Merlin returns to Amber to discover that this time April 30th isn't enough and that at least one someone is intent on his life. Somehow his best friend is involved and his royal aunts and uncles also come under fire. And Ghostwheel a construct he has created in shadow has developed self awareness, and a nasty sense of self preservation. To put it simply, Merlin is in serious trouble, and no one seems able to hlp him out.
The story shifts from place to place with considerable speed as Merlin tries to find the pieces of the puzzle and goes from one crisis to another. He lacks his father's more irritating traits, but has a tendency to jump into things headfirst without much planning. Of course, he is quite a bit younger than Corwin, which is both his charm and his Achilles heal. You will meet both old friends and new as the story develops, and see Amber through a different set of eyes.
If I have a criticism, and I really don't, it is that Zelazny triggers the ending to quickly and suddenly you are in a whopper of a cliffhanger. This was intensely frustrating back when I has to wait for the sequel, but a wise reader will have all
A triumphant return to Amber.......2003-07-03
Trumps of Doom marks the return to the setting of Roger Zelazny's Amber series. The first five books told the story of Corwin, prince of Amber. This sixth book in the saga deals with Corwin's son Merlin. Having spent a number of years on our earth, Merlin has been dealing with a series of assassination attempts. As he tries to resolve the issue he is drawn into a deeper plot threatening the very heart of reality, Amber itself. If you have not read any of Zelazny's Amber novels previously I highly recommend them. I found this to be one of the most exciting, becoming even more so as this second series progresses. Merlin is a much easier character to relate to as he is a little more like an average person. All of the characters of Corwin's generation are a little too experienced, cynical, and aware for the average person to empathize with. Merlin on the other hand bumbles his way through a number of problems, often surviving through sheer luck. While powerful he is a a much easier character to relate to.
merlin is not corwin.......but he's still interesting.......2002-03-07
of course merlin isn't corwin, thank god, if he was then what would be the point of a "sequel series"? i found this book to be the most interesting of books 6-10 other than the 9th book in the series. granted the "2nd series of the amber chronicles" isn't as inspired or original as books 1-5, but its still way better than most of the other sci-fi/fantasy novels out there! zelazny always seemed to be on top of his form, he never betrayed his style and ceaselessly used "logical" surprises, not contrived surprises, as well as incorporating a sense of humor. the only qualm i have about the book is that its too short!!!
The Amber Chronicles.......1999-10-28
This is the sixth book of the Amber Chronicles (the first one is Nine Princes in Amber). Get ready to read four more (Blood of Amber, Sign of Chaos, Knights of Shadows, Prince of Chaos) - you will not be able to stop!
Some things, thankfully, stay the same..........1999-07-02
Don't dismiss it out of hand simply because the hero-role has been passed on -- in some things, Zelazny has no peer; writing is one of those things. Perhaps the 'new' Amber series doesn't give a sense of closure, but allow for the unfortunate and sudden closure. The skill, the power, and the vision are his. Now and forever.

Book Description
For thousands of years, Chinese women have trusted traditional Chinese medicine to help them conceive. A recent medical study found that women who augmented Western fertility treatments with TCM, traditional Chinese medicine, doubled their chances of a succesful pregnancy. THE INFERTILITY CURE gives women an effective, natural means of supporting their efforts to get pregnant. Based on techniques and remedies drawn from traditional Chinese medicine, this program shows readers how to increase their overall health and well-being, strengthen the organs and systems vital to reproduction, heal specific conditions that may affect fertility, and even support Western-based reproductive technology such as IVF and hormone therapy. Dr. Lewis' easy-to-follow program begins with diagnosis, using an extensive questionnaire to determine each reader's unique diagnostic category. The next three steps involve bringing a woman's body back into balance through diet, acupressure, and Chinese herbs. By following this program, women will be able to create a welcoming physical and emotional environment for what they desire most: a child.

Excellent Resource for Alternative Fertility Treatments.......2007-08-21
I just put my 6 week old son to bed-- the result of following a combination of this books' practices as well as an endocrinologist' testing and -- I believe-- just plain grace from the Lord-- While I am sure you could follow everything to a "T" and not get pregnant, I found her holistic advice to be a great counterpoint to Western medicine's sole focus on getting your eggs, uterine lining, and his sperm to behave-- But I DO think it is important to start any fertility journey by getting tested to be sure that all of your "parts" so to speak are in order. (ie HSG, ultrasound for ovaries and uterine lining, post coital test, etc) What she proposes isn't easy and involves reducing stress, radically changing your diet, and taking gross herbs, but I found all of the treatments would compliment Western medicine. In my personal case, I followed all her advice-- with the guidance of a licensed acupuncturist. (I would NEVER attempt to decide myself about the herbs, acu points, etc. ) from reducing stress to diet change. In addition, once I had naturally achieved pregnancy-- I continued treatment and monitoring from my RE for low progesterone.
Good information.......2007-07-23
I bought this book while I was struggling with infertility. I'm happy to say that I finally have a beautiful baby girl. It's been a while since I read this book, but I attribute it to me living a more natural lifestyle and really thinking about how the chemicals around us could have affected my fertility. I recommend this book to anyone looking for a way to help the process along, naturally.
Didn't cure me, but comprehensive nonetheless.......2007-07-18
I can't say that I was cured after reading or applying the information from this book, however, I still suggest this for people in the midst of struggling. One of the things that I really needed when I first began treatments was to feel that I had a sense of control over what felt completely out of my hands. Reading this book gave me that enpowerment. I worked through the surveys and learned an alternative way of thinking about my body. I was then able to take that information to an acupuncturist and have an intelligent conversation about my condition.
While I know very little about TCM, this book was comprehensive and carefully thoughtout. I did not feel overwhelmed by the material and it provided me with an education on an area of fertility treatment that has worked for many others.
The only downside to this book was that it tried to deal with too many possible diagnosis situations. Many of the chapters did not apply to my situation and therefore not necessary for my reading. I did, however, pass the book onto others, making the entire book worthwhile.
Buy before trying to conceive.......2007-07-16
This book is one of the best that I've read regarding fertility. Since it's marketed as "infertility", I didn't read until I had been trying for a while, but recommend this book as one to read BEFORE you start trying to conceive.
Wonderful book and resource!.......2007-07-16
This is wonderful book for both practitioners and laypeople alike. I initially found this book through a patient and have used it extensively with every fertility patient I've seen since then. Dr. Lewis has information that ranges from dietary changes that anyone can get started with immediately to Traditional Chinese Medicine patterns in infertility and acupuncture protocols that any practitioner who uses acupuncture can use. This is also a great book for patients to bring to their doctors, naturopaths or acupuncturists. Acupuncture and (sometimes) herbs are now being encouraged by many mainstream fertility clinics and this book allows me to have much of the information I need at my fingertips.
If you are trying to become pregnant or if you are a practitioner that uses Traditional Chinese Medicine with your patients, this book is a must.

Great Memories in this cookbook............2007-05-12
If you've ever been to the Hali'Imaile General store, you know this is going to be good. It's a great souvenir of your trip, even if you can't cook. The photos of the restaurant are wonderful as are the little opening stories Bev writes before each chapter begins. You do need to know a bit about cooking for some of the recipes.
ATaste of Heaven.......2003-01-03
After many trips to Maui over the years we finally tried Hali'Imaile General Store. It was my Birthday and wanted to try a new place. What a treat! The service was the best Joan was our fantastic Server and made us feel like Royalty. Her suggestions made our dinner the very best it could be. Since that first trip we have had many, many dinners and taken our Clients and family there for dinner, we get such rave reviews we seldom take new Clients anywhere else except when in a hurry on time or for a little more casual bite we go to "that other place" they have ribs too! We enjoy the fantastic variety of foods. I fell in love with the fishcakes at first bite had to go back the next day and ordered them just for me NO!sharing. My family and friends know if you want to please me with a "gift" a dinner gift certicaate works.Where else would I want to go. One of my favorite deserts Pina Colada Cheesecake this was the most Heavenly taste. I tell people when we take them to the Restraunt its WONDERFUL and still they cant believe how good the food and service is. Mahalo for all the great times we have had at your Place and they other place too! Bev & Joe you have really done a great job keep up your part and we'll keep up ours "eatting at your places with family, friends and clients" My best Friend gave me a gift certificate after 2 trips to the restraunt in a week we had to go back to Portland, Joan sujested since I love the food why not take a cookbook back so I did.My daughter who loves cooking stole my book. Beautiful as it is good!.......2001-10-01
The Portuguese Bean Soup recipe is really the best I've ever had.
The book is broken down by seasons which I found to be more authenic as well as easy to use. Most people don't realize that Hawai'i does indeed have seasons-other than the tourist season.
My step-father, a native of Hawai'i, and I have had much fun shopping for some of the ingredients here on the "mainland". We have been able to find just about everything to make several of the recipes (and neither of us live in a large town).
For some great Portuguese Bean Soup, you have to get this book!
WowWee Maui.......2001-06-05
I purchased this book several months ago in anticipation of hosting a baby shower with a luau theme. I spent several months agonizing over which of the many amazing dishes I should make. I settled on the soba noodle salad, pork tenderloin with pineapple chutney (I omited the mushroom polenta) Paella and pineapple pie. It was amazing. although the recipes involve a boatload of chopping, and in some cases, a lot of ingredients, most can be made one or two days ahead. Anyone interested in fresh, complex flavors and textures should buy this book. My guests ran the gamet of tastes and ages, but I ended up with very few leftovers. I am a cookbook affeciando and I say this is a Great Great Book. I'd even fly to Maui to have them cook for me.
Upcountry Bounty.......2001-02-28
Just returned from "Paradise" (Maui)and had a chance to visit the wonderful "Hali'imaile General Store" restaurant-what a experience!! Outstanding meal (didn't get a chance to sample the 'crab dip'-and unfortunately, it's not in the cookbook),amazing artwork, unbelievable floral arrangements and excellent service!!I just had to buy the cookbook and I'm so glad I did-the same wonderful foods, artwork and floral arrangements are in the cookbook-wait until you see the pictures-breathtaking!! It's more than a cookbook (with some wonderful receipes)it's a picture book to enjoy!!
