4 out of 5 stars Dark and gritty romantic suspense.......2006-09-19

Depth Perception is a dark, scary and depressing book. It's also very, very good, both in the suspense and the romance department.

Considering the book deals with child killings and that two the dead little boys were actually the sons of the hero and heroine, the book can't be anything but dark. Nat Jennings husband and son were killed three years ago, and after becoming the main suspect Nat tried to kill herself. This left her in a coma for over two years, and when she woke up, she discovered something had altered in her mind. She periodically has "fits", in which she writes messages from her dead son, Kyle. And Kyle is telling her his murderer has killed other children, children whose deaths everyone thinks were accidents.

One of those children Kyle mentions is Nick Bastille's son, who drowned while Nick was in prison after being set up by his former partner. Nick escaped Bellerose as soon as he could, and had made it big in New Orleans, but now he has nothing, so he returns to his father's farm in the town he hasn't seen in 18 years.

When a strange woman approaches him and tells him his son didn't die accidentally, but was murdered, Nick's first reaction is to get angry. Where does this woman get off, telling him that? But Nat soon proves to him that she does have a psychic connection with her son, and she and Nick join forces to try to find the murderer.

Both Nick and Nat are very well done characters, two very damaged people who, nonetheless, manage to find immense strength inside themselves. And it takes lots of strength to even be in Bellerose, especially for Nat, because this is a town full of people who think she killed her husband and son and who don't hesitate to punish her for it. This is a truly awful place for them to be in, with corrupt police harassing them and powerful people (including Nat's former father- amd brother-in-law) making their lives hell. I've read plenty of books in which one of the characters puts him or herself in a similar position and I usually just want to scream at them to just leave, why on Earth are they in that disgusting town with those disgusting people? Think Linda Howard's After the Night, for instance. I enjoyed the book, but I never really bought that Faith would put herself through the awful experience of moving back to that small town just to investigate the disappearance of that guy who meant nothing to her.

In the case of Depth Perception, I never had that feeling. Nat started out the book as someone who was completely empty, except for a burning need to see justice done and her son's murderer punished. And Nick, while not damaged to the level that Nat was, was pretty desperate, too, especially once he accepts that what happened to his son wasn't an accident. This all justified that they wouldn't immediately hightailed it out of there. And I really liked that they don't decide to stay in Bellerose at the end of the book, once the truth comes out. I would have liked it better if I could have seen them rubbing their innocence in those judgemental people's faces, but all right, I see why Castillo would leave things where she left them.

In spite of the frustration of seeing Nat and Nick battle against unhelpful police and vengeful neighbours, I really liked the investigation aspect of the book, especially because the psychic element of it was intriguing and very satisfyingly done. I especially liked that there was no "am I going crazy" wonderings on Nat's part. By the start of the book, she has already dealt with the doubts and has very logically managed to prove to herself that she's not just writing things down that she already knew. This means that when she convinces Nick, they are able to use her psychic abilities logically and do the best they can with them to help their cause and find the villain.

And speaking of the villain, I thought that he wasn't particularly subtly drawn. I mean, we do get some insight into why he became what he became, and I did like that he wasn't just someone who was evil just because he wanted to be evil, but the whole thing about his childhood was a bit over-the-top. The final confrontation was well done, though.

As I mentioned above, this is romantic suspense, and the romance very definitely does not get overwhelmed by the suspense. After only a couple of pages, seeing just how grim the story was going to be, I wondered if the romance wouldn't feel inappropriate. Well, it didn't, even though it was quite a steamy one, too. I think what I liked best was how there was an element of healing in it, how it was a way for them to console each other. But, and this is important, it wasn't all it was. It wasn't just healing, and I bought that these two were going to be together after a while, and I appreciated that we didn't get some kind of saccharine epilogue showing them deliriously happy. What we got was just perfect, and went well with this very good book.

4 out of 5 stars Good read.......2006-08-13

Depth Perception was an enjoyable read. It's on the tragic and dark side, but not excessively so. I was pretty hooked into the story.

I liked the two main characters. Both are strong leads. There was definite chemistry between the two, but the book is not overly romantic. Castillo focuses mostly on the plot and all that's going on. With all that, there's not much time for romance between the two characters. Even so, I was still able to believe in the feelings that developed between the two.

The suspense aspect was nicely done. Nat's ability to receive messages from the dead added a nice dimension to the book and upped the urgency of the story. Castillo didn't spend too much time pushing suspects at the readers, just some vague accusations. I think it might have been better if she'd given us more solid suspicions. But saying that, I had a pretty good guess who the bad guy was. There was a certain detail that made it rather obvious fairly early on. Another drawback in the book was that there were one or two details that were contradictory, that didn't fit with other details in the book. But they were fairly minor things.

Overall, a good read. I enjoyed it.

4 out of 5 stars Great Book.......2005-09-22

I love Linda Castillo. I have most of her books. This one and "Don't Tell" are my favorite. It's hard to put the book down.

3 out of 5 stars Good read........2005-02-28

Two people, both falsely accused of crimes, find each other in Depth Perception. Fresh out of jail, Nick Bastille comes home to try and make a new life for himself, but innocent or not, he still has the shadow of crime looming over him, as well as the grief resulting from his son's death while he was in jail. Nat Jennings never served prison time for the crime she is believed to have committed, killing her child and husband, but she did spend two years in a coma after grief drover her to try to kill herself. Upon waking, she realizes she has a gift, to somehow automatically write words her son sends from beyond. The child's message is chilling, whoever killed him also killed Nick's son, and is going to kill again.

*** Now, these two lost souls must work together to stop a killer from striking again. This is a fast paced read with sympathetic, scarred characters built on an intriguing concept. Though the romance is more of a background element, it does add depth to an engrossing story. ***

4 out of 5 stars GOOD SUSPENSE BOOK.......2005-02-20

This book has lots of suspense with a little romance thrown in. A good read if you like romantic suspense.

5 out of 5 stars A powerful collection; should be back in print.......2006-12-12

It's a shame that Robin Morgan is best known for her feminist essays and editorship at Ms. Magazine, because she's a fine enough poet that she should be regarded foremost as such. This collection transcends its genre. It is beautiful and strong and conveys her sensibilites with greater grace, insight and compassion than her very solid prose ever does.

There is no other book that takes this useful approach that applies to film-makers and critics alike.

                Book Description

Kevin Griffin, a Buddhist meditation teacher and longtime Twelve Step practitioner, weaves his personal story of recovery with traditional Buddhist teachings. The book takes us on a journey through the Steps, examining critical Twelve Step ideas like Powerlessness, Higher Power, and Moral Inventory through the lens of Buddhism. One Breath at a Time presents potent ancient techniques for finding calm and clarity and offers a vision of a Higher Power not tied to traditional Western Judeo-Christian concepts. One Breath at a Time describes the convergence of two vital traditions, one ancient, the other contemporary, and shows how they are working together to create a rich spiritual path for our times. Certain to resonate with both meditators and those whose mantra is 'One day at a time,' One Breath at a Time should find a large, welcoming audience.

                5 out of 5 stars A Truly Spiritual Journey.......2007-09-16

This is one of the finest books I've read linking the 12 Steps of AA with the practices of Buddhism. Kevin Griffin has a magnificent grasp of both and presents them so clearly that it truly is a thrill to read. Excellent writing as well, sometimes poetic. Well done!

                4 out of 5 stars hidden gem.......2007-05-10

I bought this book for my bf as he was coming out of rehab, and ended up reading it myself as well. It has lessons and guidance that even a non-addicted person can apply to their everyday life. I highly recommend this book, it is a quick read, and you'll leave knowing things about yourself you didn't before.

5 out of 5 stars Great Intro to the Twelve Steps and Western Buddhism.......2006-11-25

Kevin Griffin and friends put a lot of thought into integrating these two approaches. However, what makes the book a Five Star instead of a Four Star is the totally honest portrayal of his own life by Mr. Griffin as he tells of his misdeeds and how he hurt others in his bouts with alcohol and drugs. He offers hope and redemption to the rest of us and you will love his happy ending. Were we all so open, humble, and acknowledging of our faults and missteps. A great read for us recovering folks who also would like to focus on Step Eleven, especially through a Buddhist perspective.

5 out of 5 stars Freedom from Mara (Illusion).......2006-10-17

This is an interesting dimension on the 12-steps which were Christian in origin and spiritual in nature. One Breath at a Time is a Buddhist slant on the one day at a time approach in recovery. One primary lesson from Buddhist philosophy is that attachment and craving are at the root of suffering. Addiction is both an attachment and a craving whose compulsions take over and trap an individual in an endless cycle. Whether the addiction is to a substance or a behavior the illusion that it frees the person from pain is what mara is ... a mirage promising bounties that are empty. So ... for those who are interested in other perspectives of recovery - this is one read to consider.

                5 out of 5 stars Recommended.......2006-09-29

This book is well written and easy to read. I relapsed with 13+ years in a 12 step program and having a difficult time getting reconnected. As someone with Buddhist leanings who never quite bridged the gap between the steps and Buddhism I found this book to be of great help. If you are even remotely interested in working the 12 steps from a Buddhist perspective I highly recommend this book.

5 out of 5 stars The Best Grilling Book I Own.......2006-11-22

I bought this book on a whim and have been amazed at how comprehensive, easy to read and execute, and just fun the book is. My husband has really gotten into grilling in the last year, and we have a small library of top grilling titles, and this is always our go-to. When, for example, we wanted to grill Cornish game hens, this book was the only one with a recipe (and a delicious one at that). If you like grilling, you must own this book!

5 out of 5 stars Best book for developing the skill of grilling.......2006-11-10

Over the last several years I have been working on developing the skill to really make grilling work. I have collected a lot of books on grilling and honestly have found most to be a list of recipes rather than useful information about using the grill. In fact, a lot of them seem to just say "then grill for x minutes" after spending a page on the prep.

This book is different in that it really helps to develop an understanding of how grilling works. This allows me to develop skill, rather than just repeat instructions (with mixed results).

I am most fond of the "101" sections at the beginning of each food type. It really helps to lay out the process. These sections often repeat information shown elsewhere in the book, which at first annoyed me. However, I now find that having it all in one place allows me to quickly review before grilling.

On the negative, I think they went a little overboard with the number of recipes. For example, there are several steak recipes that really are just about how to make a sauce to put on the steak after grilling. The book is fairly priced even if I never use them, but it does force me to sort through a lot of these "quasi" ideas to find the good recipes. Related to that, the attempts to personalize each recipe became tiring. In a few places it was kind of nice, but after a while you feel like you are reading her diary. As my rating shows, neither of these was a big enough issue to detract from the overall excellent nature of the book.

I will be giving a copy out to many people on my Christmas list.

                5 out of 5 stars I should know, I tested the recipes!.......2006-01-12

Culinary school did not teach me how to man handle the grill, Elizabeth Karmel did! This book will light your fire and keep it burning; even in mid February when you're sporten your long undies.Taming the Flame is full of great tips, tricks, and techniques. If you don't own this book my guess is you're just flat out grilling wrong!

5 out of 5 stars Fabulous Flame Tamer.......2005-10-25

If you follow the clear step-by-step instructions from lighting the fire to clean-up and select any recipe in this well written, fun to read book, you will have a wonderful meal and increase your confidence about grillilng.

5 out of 5 stars Catch the Passion & Heat.......2005-07-22

Having sizeable Grill/BBQ cookbook collection already, it takes something to catch my eye and add at this point. Browsing through this one did it.

She is definitely into it, and conveys this energy and expertise in this over 350 page offering. It will provide basics for initiate and wealth of great recipes and tips for all up to expert.

Begins each unit with a 101 intro, as well there is great intro to types of grills and smokers, and glossary and sources along with a menu suggestion section. Nice style with about 20 4 color photos of some dishes makes for an attractive cookbook. Further, great grilling time charts in every section which are very useful!

What caught my perusing eye was such creative entrys as "Beer Can Turkey" (already into the Chicken on the Can); Sweet Pork Sausages in a Dijon-White Wine Sauce; French Onion Dip burgers; Jack and Coke Soaked Pork chops; Portobello Mushroom Dip with Pita Points; Italian Grilled Cheese Skewers; and a terrific twenty source rub and sauce recipe section.

This adds much to the spectrum already out there, including Bobby Flay, James Purviance, Chris Schlessinger, Steven Raichlein, et al. Neat to see the ladies really into great grillin and BBQ, e.g. Karen Adler and Judith Fertig.

Fun book to read and use.

                  Book Description

The slow cooker has been a true boon for the busy chef, but until now most slow-cooker recipes have been developed with an eye toward “forgetting” about the cooking rather than creating memorable dishes. That's about to change. With Secrets of Slow Cooking, author Liana Krissoff presents classics, both American and international, as well as new tastes, all featuring the freshest ingredients prepared in a satisfying and, as she puts it, “soulful” manner.

Beginning with easy tips for slow-cooker success, Krissoff then offers more than 60 recipes for extraordinary slow-cooked food. From appetizers to vegetables to main dishes to desserts, here are foods that will delight family and friends—Soy-Glazed Beef Short Ribs, Wild Rice with Cherries and Orange, Easiest Corn Chowder, Cassoulet with Homemade Sausage, Apricot and Chocolate Bread Pudding, and Chewy-Fudgy Brownies, to name but a few.

Also included are recipes that take full advantage of the slow cooker's capacity for even, low-heat temperature. For example, Tuna Poached in Extra-Virgin Olive Oil showcases an excellent method for cooking firm-fleshed fish, while Sake Punch demonstrates how a slow cooker becomes the perfect punch bowl for serving hot drinks.

Secrets of Slow Cooking will take your slow cooker from a convenient appliance to a treasured kitchen necessity.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent and Easy To Use Recipies.......2007-01-16

I gave this book to my daughter-in-law as a gift. I also own a copy. I use this book extensively with my slow-cooker. The recipes are very good and very easy. When I found the book at amazon.com, I was very excited.

                  5 out of 5 stars The best I've found!.......2005-07-21

I have two slow cookers, and always want to use them, but can never really come up with much more than your basic Pot Roast or Beef Stew. When summer hits I would love to be able to use my slow cookers more, to keep from heating up the kitchen AND to keep my prep work to a minimum. I have seven or eight slow cooker cookbooks, and most seem to be variations on the same old recipes. This book is so different! The recipes are unique and intriguing, and the photos are gorgeous. I've made two recipes in two days and both are keepers! The Cantonese Pork is wonderful, and the Spicy Italian Beef was the easiest and most flavorful beef we've had in a long time! I've got another 10 or 15 recipes marked to try in the coming weeks, and I can't wait! Some recipes call for some so-called 'convenience foods' like Cream of Mushroom Soup or an envelope of Italian Dressing Mix, which I appreciate. I love making things from scratch, but sometimes lowfat or low-sodium convenience food options are practical and tasty, and they can speed up preparation. I highly recommend this cookbook for anyone looking to expand their menu options for their slow cookers!

                  5 out of 5 stars Great Slow-Cooker Cookbook.......2005-02-05

This was my first slow-cooker cookbook and it's better than the newer ones that I've received since then. There are plenty of photos for those who need pictures with their recipes. I have marked about 30 must try dishes already from this book because they all look so easy and appetizing at the same time! And I'm hardly through it! This will definitely be an asset in our kitchen for years to come!

I absolutely love this book. It can be hard for my family and I to agree on a recipe: my husband and I have opposing tastes, I can be very picky, and I have two toddlers so the food must be kid-friendly. There are very few recipes in this book that I am not interested in. Everything I have made so far is simple, quick, and delicious! Plus, you don't need a lot of exotic or expensive ingredients to make exquisite meals. This is definitely a worthwhile investment!
