Book Description
What's a Girl to do when she's forced to be, well, a girl? That's what's hot shot freelance PR woman and amateur detective Temple Barr has to do when as a favor to top cop Carmen Molina she goes undercover at Teen Queen, the newest pop star-search reality TV show, all in the hopes of protecting Molina's 13-year old daughter. It's no picnic trying to be a teenager again, even after a punk makeover. To make matters worse, Temple's in danger of being uncovered by the show's celebrity judges, including her romance novelist aunt and her arch-enemy, Crawford Buchanan. And just to make life more interesting there are her fellow contestants, unnatural blondes aplenty who are all too willing to sabotage and backstab their way to the top. Unfortunately, someone has a real knife out for Las Vegas's young women, and it's up to Temple and her underfoot undercover partner, Midnight Louie, to ferret out the killer.

Ricki Loves This Book! And Midnight Louie!.......2006-09-29
So, Anyway, I was about to tell you about Midnight Louie's latest Caper! Let me first tell you that he, too, has a companion. Her name is Temple and she is one cool lady! She is a PR guru, but for some reason, she's always getting mixed up in something mysterious, dangerous...
This time, in the Hot Pink Pursuit, she was "bargained" into entering a teen queen contest. Geesh! Duh, she's, like, 30...but because she is so small and beautiful, she was able to pass for 19.
Now, why would this major professional lady want to do this? Why, for a man of course! You see, she's involved with a magician, Max--what a hunk!
Max is being pursued by the police; specifically, a policewoman named Molina.
Molina has a beautiful young daughter, named Mariah, who, without getting prior permission, entered the Tween contest, and was accepted!
So, here's the deal, Molina bargains with Barr to enter the contest so that she can guard and protect Mariah...and, in return, Molina will lay off of Max!
Sooooooo, you got it, the deal was made. Enter Xoe Chloe, pronounced Zo-ee Chlo-ee, with a Cher long black wig and "goth" makeup and "big" attitude. She and Mariah, backed by Molina's money, splurge on a wardrobe worthy of queen contestants, and fortunately wind up as roommates at the contest location.
Of course, my Midnight Louie sneaks along to protect them...because there is murder, no less! And he's on a hot pursuit of the killer!
Of course, an added benefit for him was being near Yvette and Solange, silver and golden persians that are soooo not worthy of Midnight Louie...You might know that they would be there too!
Meanwhile, another of Temple's love interests, er, I mean friends, Matt is on a hot pursuit of his own. At the stubborn insistence of his mother, he's tracking down information on his father, who is supposed to have died many years ago. The face-to-face meet with his father in a hallway as both men wait for an elevator is a cool scene!
And, wonder of wonders, Matt seems to have gained much needed confidence through this wild experience...for he later moves boldly in pursuit of Temple! Did I tell you that Max has been around, searching for Temple, not knowing that she is off "saving him" from Molina...
As always, this is a cool whodunit by Carole Nelson Douglas and somehow Midnight Louie figures it out (he's been tracking the pink fruit smoothie smell on suspects' shoes!) about the same time Xoe Chloe does!
So Midnight Louie is back at home, stretching his long black beautiful body on the couch when his companion Temple comes home with....Matt???
Now What?! Can't wait to read the next in this fantastic series! And, Oh! I'd just love to meet the super-star, Louie!
(As told by Ricki, one of Glenda's cats!)
one of my favorites in the series.......2006-07-24
This edition to the series is an amusing and clever update of the english country-house mystery, but set in the hot-house environs of a contemporary closed-set reality series. Free-lance public relations expert and amateur sleuth Temple Barr must scheme to catch a killer who is threatening contestants on the 'Teen Queen' reality show filming in Las Vegas. Big fun, but also contains serious ruminations on contemporary culture. The story provides a nice puzzle, but what really makes it go for me are the interesting and memorable characters.
Go Louie!.......2005-05-12
This volume in the ongoing Midnight Louie series is a strong novel with compelling characters and a complete plot which is comparable in quality to the preceding novels. Temple gets roped by Molina into playing a teenager in a reality-makeover-pageant show in exchange for leaving Max alone. Molina's daughter Mariah is a younger contestant. Murder and mayhem are present as always. Matt heads to Chicago seeking information on his unknown and supposedly deceased father. Max is sort of on the sidelines, building up to something in a future novel no doubt, dealing with the magician retirees. Louie is helping out Temple and is "reunited" with the Divine Yvette and her sister Solange. The ever-perky Midnight Louise also arrives on the scene. Max lurks around Temple's apartment, reminiscing, and wonders if it's all over. Matt surprises Temple at the end, but you'll have to read it to know what he does.
riveting amateur sleuth .......2005-04-27
In Las Vegas, anything goes and usually does. A new reality show is coming to town Teen Idol, a program that involves teens competing in two age groups to become queens of their respective divisions can be picked. Unknown to Lieutenant Carmen Molina of the Las Vegas Police Department, her daughter Mariah entered the teen competition and made the cut. Molina reluctantly allows her daughter to go for the two weeks in house event but worries because someone is mutilating the advertising posters and a girl was killed on the site where the audition occurred.
Molina asks Temple Barr to go undercover and enter the contest as a teen so she can watch over Mariah; she agrees because Max is nowhere around and hasn't been in quite some time. Her friend Matt is in Chicago looking for some clue that will lead him to the identity of his biological father. A serious of mischievous threats culminates in the murder of the contest's dietician. Temple with the help of her feline companion Midnight Louis investigates to stop the killer from murdering others.
Carole Nelson Douglas always keeps her series fresh by taking her characters in different directions and CAT IN A HOT PINK PURSUIT is no exception. For long time fans, secrets are finally revealed and the heroine makes a life alternating decision. The story is told in the third person point of view except when Midnight Louis is on stage and he gives his first hand perspective. This writing technique is deftly handled by Ms. Douglas so that this charming and entertaining mystery is a must read for people who like creative and riveting amateur sleuth tales told mostly by one with a tail.

two fantasy books in one volume [no spoilers].......2005-12-09
"The Book of Years Volume #1" combines two stories "The Horse Lord" and "The Demon Lord" by Peter Morwood. Although the charming narrative has both imaginative and conventional heroes and terrorizing creatures, misspelling and repeated words unfortunately lace the poorly edited text.
"The Horse Lord" details the journey of Aldric Talvalin, distant heir to an outlying Horse Clan. The storyline develops as a small party quest involving magic, including various necromantic spells, and swordplay with legendary beasts and fascinating foes to find key artifacts. On the other hand a quickly introduced romance undermines the tension between characters.
"The Demon Lord" continues the saga of Aldric Talvalin about two months after the preceding story. Aldric's assignment begins as a relatively straightforward task yet escalates into a confrontation with a werewolf and ends up battling an ancient evil for a realms survival. As before, a hasty romance undercuts a perilous mission.
Military and political figures play essential roles however the political drama asserts minimal activity. A detailed map of the significant terrains and comprehensive appendix would have been useful.
I highly recommend this series to any fan of the fantasy genre.
Thank you.
Finally Morwood returns!.......2005-08-22
I read the "Book of Years" over 15 years ago when in highschool; I loved it then and I still read my old originals now. This series in my opinion is one of the classic swords and sorcery stories and sadly one of the "lost gems" in the genre. Thankfully DAW republished it. Hopefully they wisely republish Morwood's "Clan War" series which is a prequel to the "Book of Years" and the supposed sequel to the latter called "The Star Lord". This series is reminiscent of Brian Daley's duology "Star followers of Coramonde" and "Doomfarers of Coramonde", and if anyone out there knows about those, then you know what I mean! Peter Morwood has written an action filled series with characters you will both love and love to hate.

But what do you do when the person you love..........2007-09-12
makes false allegations that they were sexually abused based on "recovered memories" as encouraged by Courage to Heal?
Excellent Resource for the Non-Abused Partner.......2007-08-13
This book has brought sanity back to an insane process. This book will help you cope and understand what your partner is going through when engaged in a sexual abuse recovery. It brings hope back into what can feel like a helpless situation. It is a must read for those intimately involved in the recovery process.
No "Hypocrisy" Here.......2006-09-24
Anyone who has read any part of this book would know that it does address the needs of both people in the relationship, whether one - or both - were abused. To say that this book doesn't address the partners of survivors is ridiculous. This book is loaded with insightful information for both survivor and partner to assist in learning and dealing with the abuse. Indeed, parts of this book may not truly relate to your personal situation, but there parts that will, guaranteed.
Being a good partner means being open and receptive, to even the things we fear the most. While there are parts to this book that open new doors and create new challenges, this book provides great insight in how to face those challenges, and come out ahead. Can a book fix everything? No. But this is great place to start.
The book is loaded with quotes like: "You will also need to shift your focus from the survivor and the survivor's problems to yourself - your needs, your feelings, your history, and places you can grow." AND "Don't take care of the survivor. That's not your job in life. Take care of yourself."
Anyone who says this book can't help either didn't read it, or is too narrow-minded to know any better. Read this book. Read it with your partner, and share what your learn together.
Disputing Hypocrisy in Action.......2006-07-01
I just finished reading Allies in Healing. I feel it is an excellent book for both partners and survivors. So when I read the review Hypocrisy in Action I thought it was about a different book! The whole book is about the partner NOT giving in to the survivors every demand and taking care of their own needs, in addition to being supportive.
He stated he just broke up with his girlfriend. I'd say she's better off without such an angry, closed minded partner, who wasn't capable of being a true partner at all!
Don't let that review influence you! I think you'll get A LOT of helpful incite from this book!
Unbelievably Helpful.......2006-02-27
This book is unbelievably helpful for the partner of a sexual abuse survivor. Being able to focus on your feelings again seems selfish at first for a partner, but staying strong as an individual makes your support for the abuse survivor even more possible in the long run. You realize that you are not alone, and that there have been other partners who are showing courage by sticking with someone who is going through (or neeeds to be pointed toward) the healing process. The writing is very clear and well thought through. Because the author is a sexual abuse survivor, and provides clinics for partners of sexual abuse survivors' partners, she is very knowledgeable of the feelings that people on both sides of this trauma end up living with. I would highly recommend this book to both survivors of sexual abuse and their partners so that both people in the relationship can better understand the impact of trauma on their loved ones.

Restaurant Terra provides fine dining in a century-old former foundry. The very personal creation of husband-and-wife chefs Hiro Sone and Lissa Doumani, the Napa Valley dining spot is noted for its relaxed yet sophisticated cuisine--French- and Italian-influenced cooking that also reflects Sone's Japanese culinary heritage. Terra tells the restaurant's story and offers over 175 of its recipes, from appetizers such as Goat Cheese and Artichoke Spring Rolls with Arugula and Tomato Salad to desserts such as Chocolate Mousseline on Pecan Sablé with Coffee Granité. The authors are unapologetic about the work required to prepare many of the recipes, but they've also made them models of clarity and, better still, instruction. Readers who like to cook and those who enjoy armchair restaurant touring will welcome the book.
Beginning with a day-in-the-life restaurant diary--work starts at 4:30 a.m. and ends some 20 hours later--the book then offers recipes organized by course or food type. Standouts include Mussel Seafood Soup with Caramelized Onions, Bone Marrow Risotto with Braised Veal Shanks, and Chinese Egg Noodles with Gulf Shrimp, Shiitake Mushrooms, and Pea Tendrils. Desserts, which should bring any meal to a delirious close, include Fig Fritters with Ginger Ice Cream and Feuilleté of Caramelized Bananas with Chocolate Fudge Sauce. Present also is a particularly useful chapter on basic techniques--photos depicting various vegetable cuts are a valuable bonus--as well as basic and pantry recipes. Illustrated with color photos throughout, the book provides a sense of a restaurant performing at the top of its game, plus a blueprint for preparing its most delicious fare. --Arthur Boehm
Customer Reviews:
Outstanding.......2006-03-04
A book of artistry and inspiration, Terra is sure to please the intermediate to advance chef and their diners. A cookbook and a reference, simply wonderful.
Great resource for special occasions.......2002-12-14
Great cookbook for those special occasions where you want to spend the time and resources on making something special. The recipes are a little more time-consuming, the ingredients a little harder to find, but the result is wonderful. Jacques Pepin is simpler (and excellent) and French Laundry Cookbook is even more complicated (but also excellent) - Terra is a great in-between.
I've cooked over 10 of their recipes already and every single one has turned out really well. They're not simple nor for a beginner cook, but if you have a little experience, it'll make for some very memorable dinners.
The desserts are especially great, as are the appetizers.
A Masterpiece for the Kitchen.......2001-03-25
For those of you fortunate enough to have dined at this world class restaurant, Hiro & Lissa'a book needs no introduction. I was fortunate enough to have found Terra shortly after it opened in 1988 (living in St. Helena at the time) & have been hooked ever since. The BEST dishes of their menus past & present are included in this beautifully illustrated book. Most importantly the instructions are well detailed & the dishes turn out exactly as they do in the restaurant. What more can I say? THIS IS A FABULOUS BOOK!!!!!
Awesome and amazing..........2001-01-03
Much like it's worthy counterpart's book (Tra Vigne), this wonderful piece should not fail to delight and please all those who happen across it.
First, if you are lucky enough to have dined at Terra, you'll already understand the beauty of (and behind) this book. Quite simply, this is a work of art. Why is that the case? Well...
Design--Beautiful graphic design and photographs. The layout is incredible and the photos are enough to make you drool.
Dialogue--Add to that delightful text and dialogue. Much closer to what this book achieves is the word "prose" as opposed to merely "text." The stories and dialogue are true pleasure to read. It makes this much more than simply a "cookbook."
Recipes--The recipes are, much like the food at the restaurant, exquisite. They are just delicious. Their difficulty ranges from relatively easy to moderately difficult. But, they are very easy to follow, making even the harder recipes accessible to the average "joe."
I strongly urge those considering this one to just go ahead and make the purchase. You will not be disappointed. It will be book you will treasure, and will reach for time and again.
Also, look into the Tra Vigne cookbook. It too is on the same level as this piece.
Drool.......2000-12-22
A mouth water sensantion to read and view - before you even get to cook a dish. If you'v ever been to Terra you know what I mean and if you ever go to Napa Valley - you won't want to miss the opportunity to dine at Terra.
