5 out of 5 stars Joe Grey's most complex case yet.......2006-03-22

It starts with a murder: Kit, the youngest of the three talking cats of Molena Point, discovers the body of a former film star in the stairwell of the hotel she owns. But there's more going on in the arty little California town. Joe Grey's long-time friend and partner Dulcie has a secret that's affecting their relationship: a young girl is hiding out in a hidden room in the basement of the town library, and Dulcie doesn't feel free to tell anyone about her. Then Cora Lee French, one of three senior ladies living in a recently-purchased old house on the edge of the canyon, finds a grave in the back yard. Worse, it's one of several--and even worse, the remains are those of children.

To the police, each of these things is a separate case. But Joe and his friends know there's a connection. And so there proves to be, but only a cat could draw together the threads and bring this complex affair to a satisfactory conclusion. Meanwhile, Dulcie unexpectedly learns something of her own roots. And readers who are especially fond of little Kit will be pleased to find that she plays a large part in the ultimate success, although her role begins more or less by accident. This may be the best Joe Grey mystery to date (although hints about the upcoming one suggest it will top them all). As always, there's an excellent "sense of place" in the vignettes of the town, and all the familiar cast members--Clyde Damen, Wilma Getz, Max and Charlie Harper, Dallas Garza, Ryan Flannery--reappear as well. No fan of cat mysteries should miss it.

5 out of 5 stars My favorite so far..........2006-03-11

If you love cat mysteries, read this book. It's a great page turner, and you'll be sorry when it ends. Murphy keeps you guessing, and you'll be eager to know what happens. If you've never read her before, this is a good one to start with. This is my favorite book in her series (I have read all of them) and it follows the footsteps of some of my favorite cat mystery author, Lilian Jackson Braun's books. Murphy will surely keep her audience entertained and coming back for more.

This is one of the better Joe Grey mysteries. The action keeps moving along and the characters are starting to expand their personalities. The story line has interesting twists and surprises.

5 out of 5 stars Cat mystery without the fluff--a good one.......2005-04-16

Molena Point, California is an affluent community and proud of it's retired film star, Patty Rose. When Patty is murdered, the only witness is Kit, a tortoiseshell cat. Fortunately, Kit can talk--and dial the phone. Unfortunately, she doesn't get a good look at the killer--she's got to follow him and get the evidence. With Kit vanished, fellow talking cats Joe Grey and Dulcie worry--but Joe Grey has another worry--Dulcie has been keeping secrets from him. Could another Tom have moved into town?

The day after Patty is murdered, a woman's group turns up a child's skeleton--and evidence of more murder. And runaway child Lori hides in a secret basement under the library and worries about the strange twist in her father's reaction to her and about the dangerous people out there.

Author Shirley Rousseau Murphy tells a dark tale of murder--both recent and in the past. Once again, the three talking cats manage to do most of the detecting--informing the police by calling line-ID protected phones. Because although Patty is dead, the murderer(s) may be seeking more victims.

CAT CROSS THEIR GRAVES is not the usual fluffy cat mystery. Its darker themes of endangered children, deranged religious fanatics, and over-possessive paternal love are certain to disturb the reader. But the clever cats offset the dark tone and provide plenty of hope. Murphy's strong writing keeps the reader invested in the story and the cats are developing into fairly complex and three-dimensional characters.

CAT CROSS is a different cat mystery but in this case, that doesn't mean worse. I enjoyed this story very much.

5 out of 5 stars Charming.......2005-02-03

Ms. Murphy's books just keep getting better and better. This latest installment will keep your interest from the very first page. Even though the three cats have human characteristics, Ms. Murphy easily captures their natuaral feline characteristics. She describes Joe Grey perfectly as he has trouble understanding where his soul-mate, Dulcie, is spending her time lately. Kit is maturing and will probably be a force to reckon with in future books. I love this series; I hope Ms. Murphy keeps them coming.

4 out of 5 stars A great adventure starring a very small dragon :).......2006-05-11

A policier story in a fantasy set. The results : outstanding.
Liam Rhenford and his dragon Fanuilh carry a great gift for the dying king : an artifact of lost origins, a vial of the strongest remedy of all, the King's Cure.
The problem is Liam has no idea of it and is caught in a maelstrom of treachery and death, as every door closes to him, he's marked as an assassin and murderer, and the dangerous Pacifex gets ever more close to him, her quarry.
Liam can count only on Fanuilh's small powers, and on his extraordinary luck, to get through the three days following his arrival, until traitors are exposed and all plots come to light.
I couldn't let this book down until I'd finished it... I'm going to search for more :)
This is superb fantasy - even if small scale. But who needs and epic tale when this is available?

Read it!! You won't regret it a bit.

5 out of 5 stars A Dying King & the Cure that May Save Him..........2002-07-10

This is the fifth book in the Liam Rhenford/Fanuilh (Liam's dragon familiar) series and continues Daniel Hood's fabulous fantastical mystery series. In this tale, we join Liam in Torquay, the nation's capitol. He has been charged with delivering a package for the Duke and rather resents his position of errand boy. But Liam quickly realizes that this is no ordinary package. In short order he is accused of two murders, the disappearance of his friend, attacking the Chief of the Peacemakers (Police), treason and much more! When Liam realizes that he is carrying one of the legendary treasures of the Empire, the King's Cure, and that it may be the only thing standing between the dying King and death's door, he is in a race against time to get the potion delivered to the King. The only problem is - who is his enemy and who can he trust?

This is simply a fabulous book. For those of you who enjoy mysteries, this is a great fantasy to start with. And for those of you who enjoy fantasy, this is a great fantasy and a great mystery. Daniel Hood has a beautiful writing style, very clear and easy to follow, yet full of evocative descriptions and details. Hood's characters are very well developed and the reader can immediately identify with them. Although this book is part of a series, this one can easily stand on its own as all of the characters (except Liam and Rhenford) are new and Hood does an excellent job of giving just enough background information for new readers to understand, but not so much that dedicated fans get bored. Most of Hood's books are out of print, but they are readily available through used books stores and are well worth the little bit of time and effort needed to hunt them down. Buy this book - you won't regret it!

5 out of 5 stars Unexpectedly Special Delivery.......2002-01-08

"The King's Cure" is the fifth in Daniel Hood's series, starring Liam Rhenford and Fanuilh, his dragon familiar. It opens with Liam's arrival at Master Cade's home in the capital city of Torquay, to deliver a package from Liam's employer, Vespasianus, Duke of the Southern Tier. Whatever the package is, Cade inspects it and then promptly asks Liam to carry it one step further. This time Liam is to take the packet to a man named Bairth, and he is warned to avoid notice.

Liam's irritation at running errands vanishes when his visit to Bairth's house puts him in the midst of a murder from which he barely escapes with his own life, helped considerably by Fanuilh's facility with spellcasting. As Liam avoids the Peacekeepers, he discovers that the package is a small vial containing the King's Cure, a remedy specific to those of royal blood. King Nicanor's health has been failing quickly and apparently the Duke had decided to offer aid. Unfortunately, someone else is determined to prevent the vial from reaching the King, and has set up Liam as the scapegoat.

Violent death seems to pursue Liam everywhere as he tries to resolve the crime and deliver the vial. Not only does he face betrayal, but his every move seems to be anticipated by the Pacifex Warden. He and Fanuilh are driven to the most extraordinary measures to avoid capture as they flee from place to place in Torquay. Rarely is there enough time for Rhenford and the dragon to formulate a workable plan of action as they are foiled repeatedly by the brilliant Pacifex.

I wish that Liam's relationship with Fanuilh was a bit better developed. The little dragon has considerable intelligence and many glints of personality. But Liam shifts from affection to master/servant with little rhyme or reason. Given the size of Fanuilh's part, more character development is called for to avoid him becoming a deus ex machina.

King's Cure is not really a true mystery story, but more of a fantasy adventure tale with a bit of a mystery at its inception. This hardly harm's the plot, but the reader should not anticipate another Lord D'Arcy. Instead enjoy it for what it is. Daniel Hood spins an inventive and engaging tale. Liam Rhenford is a character with depth as well as resourcefulness, much enhancing the tale. The reader will also enjoy the vivid scenes of the city of Torquay. The story stands quite well on its own. Recommended.

5 out of 5 stars One of the best fantasy writers around!.......2001-10-18

Dan Hood is one of three authors on my "must buy" fantasy list. The others being Steven Brust and George R.R. Martin (Though I will say that George has the potential of going the way of Robert Jordan and taking far too long to tell his story). His world is skillfully developed and feels both real and fantastic at the same time. His characters are interesting and well defined but remain mysterious - leaving a reader with the desire to learn more about them. (I REALLY want to know more about Liam's past as the scion of a noble house fallen on difficult times...)

Hood's plots, however, are the real reason you should buy his novels. He combines logical mysteries with the fantasy world he created and weaves puzzling and challenging plots which leave a reader always wanting to keep on turning pages. One reviewer of an earlier novel (Fanuilh - Hood's first) said it was predictable. I disagree, there were always several possible murderers until near the end - at which point the focus was more on how Rhenford was going to handle the situation.

These novels are great for fantasy enthusiasts and mystery lovers alike. Those who are both are in for a rare treat.

Unfortunately Mr. Hood has recently noted on his website that his publisher is suspending the series due to lower than expected sales. For this reason I suggest that all lovers of good fantasy get out their wallets and buy King's Cure - it is a great read and maybe we can get Liam Rhenford a second chance.

My reason for this is, of course, purely selfish: I want to read more Daniel Hood novels!

5 out of 5 stars Hood continues his fresh approach to Fantasy/Mystery........2001-06-18

King's Cure is the fifth of the Fanuilh series but there's no need to read the earlier novels to enjoy this - however, you'll want to read them because they're pretty good! Liam is tasked by the Duke to travel to the capitol to research old trade routes. And, as long as you're going there, might as well deliver this unimportant package to a friend of the Duke....

In short order Liam is accused of treason and multiple murders , pursued by the police and their eerily efficient leader who always seems to be one step ahead of him, chased by the bad guys who have infiltrated the police and discovers Fanuilh thinks the whole deal is pretty funny!

Some things that impressed me about this novel... A brutally realistic brawl in which Liam makes the mistake of bringing a knife to a sword fight. Liam's narrow escapes from his pursuers which compared favorably with similar scenes from movie, "The Fugitive" (the Harrison Ford version).

Can't wait until the next Fanuilh book!

5 out of 5 stars Actually quite good for a Chimera Book ...........2004-01-28

This is a wonderfull little story of a young woman wanting to escape from her world after the death of her husband in a tragic accident. Set in modern day Egypt, Evelyn manages to quickly tie herself up with a young photographer,Mark, that actually turns out to be a sexual and erotic enigma for her.

The reader quickly learns that maybe her dead husband and his younger brother are not all tender and sweetness as one may have though considering the mourning agony our heroine is trying to escape from. Young Mark manages to understand some of Evelyns hidden desires and he has no problem stepping into Richards shoes or his widow ....

This is not what I would call one of the hottest of erotica books since the sex scenes are somewhat short and subdued .... ther is however a wonderfull little story that keeps the reader interested as our heroine suffers her 'Eternal Bondage' from really one man to another ....

5 out of 5 stars Erotic BDSM excitement with a good story.......2003-03-27

An aspiring Egyptologist, Evelyn Taylor retreats to the sands by the Nile to heal and cleanse her spiritual self after the death of her husband. The ties of passion (and ties of leather) to her husband Richard are too strong for this world, and Evelyn deals with consuming emotions of her past love, and a new mysterious stranger who seems 'bound' and determined to take the place of her [now] not-so-stiff husband. Evelyn's all-consuming visions and mistrust sew easily into the mysterious fabric of Egypt and weave historical tales with hauntings by her lovers, then and now.

For anyone with even a passing interest in Egyptian history, the words and scenes in ETERNAL BONDAGE will delight. The descriptions of the ancient world set in modern times, laced with the graphic telling of the world of the submissive woman and the domineering man, give good counterpoint of different worlds merged.

Scene descriptions take the highest praise, the main character development comes in second... the erotic passages of violence within sexual play are done fairly well within the context of the story---the erotic writing itself borders on the crude, but the subject matter itself is by nature somewhat less than 'soft'. The bondage scenes are framed with the nature of Evelyn's passion, and then journey into the psychological realms for the reader to enjoy. The sex itself ties the intricate, keep-you-guessing plot together, and the reader is left with a mystery to solve between the spankings and tomb touring.

To the true S&M/bondage world enthusiast, this book will deliver erotic excitement with a story line... the title of the book is wonderful and ties together many possibilities of the words 'Eternal Bondage".

From a review written for SENSUAL ROMANCE

5 out of 5 stars An Absorbing Novel with Depth.......2002-11-14

Evelyn Taylor is still distraught one year after her husband's death in a car accident. Traveling the world, she goes to Egypt to lose herself in the ancient tombs. However, she begins to see visions of her deceased husband, and a photographer tries to help her to solve the mystery of her visions.

This quite nice erotic novel by the author of "Thorsday Night" is somewhat similar to her earlier work, except that this novel takes place in Egypt instead of Miami.

Mark O'Brien, an American Photographer working in Egypt, meets Evelyn in a hotel. After dining together, he seduces her, and discovers that she is used to mild D/s. She then begins to see visions of her husband Richard, and the story deepens from there.

I don't want to give too much away, but I will say that this is an absorbing novel with some depth to it. The author has done her homework about ancient Egyptian history and the Valley of the Kings, so this isn't a simplistic story at all.

Plenty of good sex and discipline scenes to keep the story moving, as Evelyn finds herself used by many other of the male characters in the novel. A must read, if you like the supernatural sex type Erotica...

5 out of 5 stars BRIAN HITS IT ON THE NAIL........2003-02-18

A terrific read. Brian really hits it on the nail. As a sales training company owner, and book author myself, who is at a crossroads right now in his life, Brian King's story and advice is one for any 30 something. An extremely perceptive individual, Brian reminds us that our "issues" are everyone's issues. His lessons remind us to not wait until we are confronted with physical crises before we address our emotional crises. Lessons such as helping others - WITHOUT THE GOAL TO BE HELPED BACK - are huge. His "Hara" of the only two things you can control- Who You Are and What You Do is dead on accurate. For anyone who has ever thought they are alone in the world and seeking human fulfillment, this is a must read.

5 out of 5 stars A Book of COMFORT and HOPE.......2001-06-15

"Everybody Has a Tumor" is an inspiring book about this authors ordeal with testicular cancer and how he overcame it. I recommend this book not only for all cancer patients and their families, but for anyone who has been through anything tragic in their lives. Overcoming tragedies in life is not easy - this book offers COMFORT and HOPE for all who read it! While it teaches anyone suffering from an ailment that they must not allow their minds and their spirit to feel the same way their body does, it also teaches those whove suffered a tragedy in life to move on and not allow that tragedy to break their spirit.

5 out of 5 stars Hope Beyond Our Trials.......2001-05-06

Brian King's personal story is not only inspirational but offers the most important component of overcoming, and that is hope. Without hope we have nothing. Brian also shares some of his wisdom , based on his personal experiences, to guide us along the way. Take the journey and experience the hope.

              5 out of 5 stars Powerful Reading.......2001-03-01

I would highly recommend this book to anyone who truly wants to improve themseves and the quality of their lives. The book is written in a interesting and sometimes humorous way so that it is not like an average self help book.I would say this book is an absolute must for anyone with Cancer or any other life altering disease. It is widely known in the medical field that attitude is largely responsible for survival of a dread disease. This book can help you Cure your negative feelings to enable you to work on getting well.

              5 out of 5 stars A Journey Worth Taking.......2001-02-24

While the title is decidedly ominous, the author doesn't really mean to suggest that we are all doomed to suffer the ravages of a life-threatening illness. Rather, we are given a poignant account of a young man's encounter with testicular cancer. We journey through the author's passage from physical illness to physical and spiritual wellness, beginning with an emotional narrative of his disease and how it affected his life as well as the lives of those around him. But the underlying metaphor, in fact, the reason for this book lies in the subtitle: "Cures for the Negative Thoughts That Are Cancerous to Our Lives."

Like Dorothy in The Wizard of Oz, many of us are looking for a wizard to help light our way, to provide answers to better help us cope with life's pitfalls. And, like Dorothy, at the end of a long, and sometimes arduous voyage, (King does suggest a bit of homework) the reader discovers that true power and wisdom come from within.

Then why bother to take this trip? Well, for many of us, the answers we seek are not as accessible as we would like. King imparts a perception that helps us tap into a component of ourselves that is sometimes cleverly hidden. He becomes a friend, offering compassion and a beam of light, so that we know we are not alone in our travels. And, if given the choice, most of us would rather travel with a companion.

                    Book Description

This book, the first ever written for savers and their families, provides an overview of compulsive hoarding and how it relates to obsessive-compulsive disorder. It discusses hoarding broadly, offering readers perspectives on the physical, behavioral, and value-oriented aspects of the condition. Readers can use its assessment tools to help decide why they or their loved one hoards. Skill-building exercises help readers determine how to beat the hoarding problem by addressing issues that often underlie compulsive saving. Even though this is fundamentally a self-help book, it contains a frank discussion about the need for professional help in some hoarding cases, how to find it, and what medications have been proven effective for savers.

5 out of 5 stars digging out of a mountain.......2007-05-12

Compulsive hoarding is a dirty little secret in America. If you have a friend or family member who will never allow you into their home, that is a big red flag warning you that they are afflicted with this disorder.
Someone who cannot bear to part with anything someone else would consider minor, such as junk mail, twist ties, broken pens and pencils--to the point there are literally hundreds or thousands of such items and it affects their ability to walk through their living space is a compulsive hoarder.
Everyone has a bit of the pack rat in them, this book helps the person, and especially the families of such individuals, identify this disorder and gives a method of dealing with the consequences.

This book is so good, I couldn't read it all in one sitting, in that I didn't want to distill the feeling that it gave me in the beginning, for fear the author would destroy it all with nonsense words. It has opened possibilties I'd never before considered. It's made me think differently about why I can't let go of things. And after reading this book, for the first time in my life, I'm coming closer to understanding why what is material is important to me.
And by "material," I mean, just old photographs, my grandmother's wedding gown, my great-grandmother's piano, stuff like that. This book explains how it's not important.
But maybe this author didn't go through watching almost everyting destroyed through three hurricanes, two floods, and an absent-minded tornado. So I also feel a bit of angst when someone living in a highrise in New York writes a book explaining to me why "material" things are important to me....and shouldn't be.
At the same time, the writer made some good points and I'm going to try and follow them. Honest.

Covering a limited range of emotional reasons for this compulsion & how to address them. Useful to those particular sufferers..
But if like me, hoping to help a family member with their hoarding, whose particular attitudes & reactions aren't mentioned anywhere, not really much help.
I did learn a few things - the difference between OCPD & OCD.. Not the book it claims to be..
Strongly suggest reading review by Betsy1479 (Jan. 18th).

                    5 out of 5 stars Extremely Useful.......2007-02-05

Being a long-time hoarder, I found this book to be quite helpful and very practical. It shows people how to: interrupt obsessive thinking; change compulsive behavior; and confront distorted beliefs. It is clearly written, very user friendly and quite effective. I do recommend it to anyone with hoarding issues. I also suggest 'Brain Lock' by Jeffrey Schwartz as helpful for this problem. Frankly, I am very glad to have found this book - it is helping me turn things around. It really is never too late to change.

2 out of 5 stars No understanding of hoarding or related emotions.......2007-01-19

From reading this book, I would guess that the authors have not really worked with any hoarders, but thought that they could write a book about behavior modification, and sell it to hoarders. They do not understand the hoarding syndrome or the thought processes involved.
The book covers a few generally accepted theories about hoarding, has a brief section on medication, and then describes a few behavior modification techniques and tells the reader to apply them to hoarding. But the examples are not what most hoarders think or feel at all! Then they throw in the old chestnut of the three box sorting technique, making it "new" by calling it three and a half box organizing.
The only reason I gave it two stars, rather than no stars, is because I guess it would be better than nothing, especially if you have never heard of behavior modification, or would like to learn a little about medications that might be helpful to hoarders.
"Conquering Chronic Disorganization" by Judith Kolberg, is a much better choice for hoarders. Her section on "Emotional Organizing" is brilliant. She handles the topic with humor and understanding. If you already have Kolberg's book, and know about medications, then save your money. The techniques in this book won't be much help.

                    4 out of 5 stars Well seasoned.......2007-07-22

I like this cookbook. Most of the recipes have sophisticated flavors without an all-day cooking extravaganza. Moreover, it's organized by season, so it's easy to find something that includes those items readily available during all times of the year.

4 out of 5 stars Pretty good, but lots of focus on grilling.......2006-04-10

This is a pretty good book. There are a variety of recipes for beef (including steaks, roasts, ground), pork, poultry (primarily chicken, but some quail, duck, etc), lamb, and veal. The Williams-Sonoma publishers are masters at selling pictures to the audience and getting you to buy the book based on the picture (hey, they sold me! :) ). Each recipe is accompanied with a beautiful picture of the dish. Sometimes the pictures have side dishes in them that look equally appealing, but there is no recipe in the book for the side dishes (so the title is strict: this is only meats and poultry). There also is a small section in the front for creating sauces that are used in the dishes. I have made a few of the beef recipes and the chicken sausage fettucine with white wine (amazing and VERY quick to make), and have been happy so far.

My only major qualm with this book is that many of the recipes are geared for grilling. I know WS has other books on grilling, and this book seems to encompass many of the recipes. I do love grilled foods, but living in a small apartment, I don't have the luxury of firing up the grill like others may have. Most of the recipes that require grilling also have instructions for broiling or searing/grilling indoors, so you can likely still make the recipe--it probably just won't taste as good. Overall a good book for the money. However, it seems like a good portion of these recipes are in other WS cookbooks, so if you already have some WS meat, poultry, and grilling books (I do not), this may not be for you.
