The latest in the Bernie Rhodenbarr series by multiple-award winner Block has Bernie underestimating the difficulty of breaking into a posh East Side apartment to steal a blue leather-covered box. No box, dead body, bum murder rap. Not so easy. The New York Times Book Review has called the Rhodenbarr books, "A witty series. Bernie is incorrigibly adorable. Between his inquiring mind and his sticky fingers, Bernie is the ideal sleuth."

Book Description

Bernie Rhodenbarr is a personable chap, a good neighbor, a passable poker player. His chosen profession, however, might not sit well with some. Bernie is a burglar, a good one, effortlessly lifting valuables from the not-so-well-protected abodes of well-to-do New Yorkers like a modern-day Robin Hood. (The poor, as Bernie would be the first to tell you, alas, have nothing worth stealing.)

He's not perfect, however; he occasionally makes mistakes. Like accepting a paid assignment from a total stranger to retrieve a particular item from a rich man's apartment. Like still being there when the cops arrive. Like having a freshly slain corpse lying in the next room, and no proof that Bernie isn't the killer.

Now he's really got his hands full, having to locate the true perpetrator while somehow eluding the police -- a dirty job indeed, but if Bernie doesn't do it, who will?

5 out of 5 stars Mr. Block does it again!.......2007-08-26

This is the third Lawrence Block book I have read. He hasn't disappointed me yet. This is a nice page turner. Block's dialog is second to none. His character's are always intriguing, and his plots fascinating. Lawrence Block is a rare breed. I found this book a great introduction to the lead character "Bernie Rhodenbarr". If you are looking for a good mystery, this a a great choice. Happy reading!

What can I say. I am a sucker for dry wit and a nifty mystery. This book feature a great amount of both. This book was an enjoyable brisk read that left me wanting to read all of the books in the series. I have yet to try any of Block's other books or series, but if they are as good as this book, I am sure they are enjoyable as well. I really like books that teach you something, this book was no exception. Although lock picking is not something I have an interest in taking up, it was fun to read about the intricate steps involved.

3.5 stars out of 5.0

The first book in Lawrence Block's Burglar series is actually the second one I read. I picked up the Burglar in the Closet, the next book, thinking it was the first, and was a little ways in before I realized my mistake. But that book was good enough that I wanted to come back and read the original book that introduces Bernie Rhodenbarr.

This book has the same lighthearted attitude. It definitely doesn't take itself too seriously which is probably a good thing since the hero is a "bad guy" in most people's eyes. The mystery isn't your typical detective style. Rather, it is a mystery that must be solved to get Bernie out of the hot water that he shouldn't be in. Well, mostly shouldn't be in. He is still a thief.

Block does nice job of introducing and developing characters. Nothing seems too cliché, which is refreshing. And for the most part, the story is plausible. Where it lost me a bit is at the end when explanations are given. The coincidences are too, um, coincidental. As Block rounded out the novel, I felt as though some things were too much of a stretch and this lessened the surprise. He redeemed himself a bit as the explanation expanded but it was still a bit of a letdown compared with how the book had been going.

Overall, a very good, easy read. Eventually, I'll pick up the third book to read and see if I want to keep going.

3 out of 5 stars 3.5 stars - Good+.......2005-04-10

As long as one doesn't have a problem with the protagonist being a burglar, this is a cleaver, light series with a real sense of New York City, fully developed characters, and crisp dialogue. I would recommend reading the series in order. If you're looking for a quick, light read, these fill the bill.

3 out of 5 stars Very light reading; but fun.......2005-02-20

Although this book is over 300 pages, it is very light reading that can be finished in a day. The sentences are short and not very complex. The paragraphs are short. And most of the book is simple dialog.

So is it a good story and an interstesting read? Yes, it is.

This is your basic detective story with all the cliches....shady cops, crooked district attorneys, society women cheating on their husbands, racketeers, and the one honest schmo.

The twist is that the "detective" in this story is actually a burglar who ends up getting framed for murder and has to find the real culprit.

I have to admit, that although I was able to predict most of the twists and turns of the book, I was surprised with the ending and who the real murderer was. And although the girl in the book was everything that I predicted, how the hero handled her in the end was unexpected.

The ending really improved my rating of this book. Halfway through the book, I really did not care if I finished it. But, the ending was not good enough to make me that eager to go out and read another in the series...but I might.

Politics come to the forefront in the fourth Wild Cards book, as the World Health Organisation organises a fact finding junket to find out what impact the Wild Card Virus is having around the world.

There is also a story with an Australian flavor, "Down In The Dreamtime".

Senator Gregg Hartman, secretly 'Puppetman', a mind controlling ace. Along with his own plotting, his is caught up in violence and the plans of Ti Malice, a joker/ace with control powers of its own.

I have to admit, I was looking forward to reading about how the wildcard virus affected the rest of the world, and I guess a fact finding tour is a decent way to work it into the universe, but the premise seemed forced. Maybe the authors intended it that way; or maybe I'm a bit to cynical, but it seems like there would be a more creative way to fit Hartman in with the rest of the wildcard supers.

I liked the ideas that the book seemed to be reaching for...but in most cases the writing seemed flat and the tie-ins between the episodes felt awkward as well. I found myself rolling my eyes at some of the Diamond entries.

What really interested me was the possibility of some of the storylines where they are not shoehorned into the world of Tachyon and company. The idea of a joker nation in central america and the Russian superagent seem like they could really take off if explored further. I'm hoping that they are in future books.

                  5 out of 5 stars hooray the W.H.O. tour!..........2002-11-15

I LOVED this book in the series, because it explores (for the first time) how Wild Cards affected the rest of the world. We get to travel along with a World Health Organization Fact-Finding Mission, charged with documenting the global affect of Wild Cards. And through their eyes, we get to see how cultures around the world changed and evolved as a result of the virus; I found that was really the final detail I needed to flesh out the Wild Cards universe in my head as a complete alternate reality. The Wild Cards were alive for me after the first three books, but after this one, they were talking to me. =;>

4 out of 5 stars An International Wild Card Novel.......2000-03-18

Aces Abroad is exactly what the title says - American Aces going outside of the US. A delegation of Aces, Jokers, and Nats( all in a Boeing 747 names The Stacked Deck), goes abroad to see the situation of aces outside the US. They go to South America, Africa, the Middle East, Asia, Europe - in short, a 'round the world' tour. After three books that focused on the US, the much needed international perspective to the story was finally given. Perhaps the highlight of the books was the return of Greg Hartmann, masterfully written by Stephen Leigh. I really liked Leigh's Strings in the first Wild Card book, and his story here, is every bit as well written, and if it isn't as tense, that's a fault of the narration, not opf the author - but wait, we'll get there. Other things worth mentioning - for the first time we get a Joker perpective. Both the continous Journal of Xavier Desmond, and John Miller's story, have an Joker narrater(Des and chrytalis, respectively). We also get answers to several nagging questions - about the Huge Ape with the passion for Blonds, about Tachyon's past, and best of all - a little more information about the Envoy. Priceless. The average level of story telling was rather high. I thought there were only 1 stincker in that pack - Down in Dreamtime, a terrible story about Jack the Aligator Man's niece. I must admit I forgot her name. Ok, but what's wrong witht he books? The greatest complain is the lack of real plot. We get basically adventures. The Stacked Deck arrives at a country, bad stuff happends. then it arrives at a new country, and a new aqdvanture starts. There's little feeling of a continuous story, despite some attempts there. Especially bothering is the fact that at the end, all the stories seem to be about Terrorists. That was somewhat of an overkill. Tachyon, for one, becomes annoying. I won't spoil anything, but he turns out more and more annoying. Snodgrass writes a nice story about him, but I don't like the direction they're taking the character. A Final complaint is that George R R Martin doesn't write a story for the book, but only the journal of Desmond, which isn't good enough for a Martin fan like me. Overall, this is a strong volume. Not as strong as ACES HIGH, maybe, but stronger then JOKERS WILD and then WILD CARDS. If you like the wild Card series, this is a good addition.

The sad truth of all exercise programs is that you have to follow them to get results. This one is no different, but its well-designed, progressive strength-training promises the fountain of youth in two 40-minute sessions a week. An extravagant claim? Yes. But many women, especially those between age 40 and 80, can achieve certain measures of youth: denser bones, better balance and flexibility, more strength and energy than women years younger. The guidelines in Strong Women Stay Young are backed with solid--though small--studies and thorough explanations of how aging changes your body. Authors Miriam E. Nelson and Sarah Wernick include clear charts, instructions, and exercise illustrations featuring women who carry extra pounds and years gracefully.

                                Book Description

Turn back the clock in just two at-home sessions per week!

Based on results published in the Journal of the American Medical Association, this scientifically proven strength-training program:

                                * Replaces fat with muscle
                                * Reverses bone loss
                                * Improves energy and balance

What are the years doing to your body?

                                * Have you lost strength?
                                * Does a busy day leave you worn out?
                                * Must you eat less to maintain your weight?
                                * Are your favorite sports less fun than they used to be?
                                * Do you notice fat where there used to be muscle?

These changes are not inevitable.  They can be prevented—and reversed!

From the famed research labs of Tufts University, here's a scientifically proven strength-training program that turns back the clock for women aged 35 and up—replacing fat with muscle, reversing bone loss, increasing strength and energy, improving balance and flexibility—all in just two at-home sessions per
                                week.

Miriam E. Nelson's research created news worldwide when the results were published in the Journal of the American Medical Association. After a year of strength training twice a week, women's bodies were 15 to 20 years more youthful. Without drugs, they regained bone, helping to prevent osteoporosis. They became stronger—in most cases even stronger than when they were young. Their balance and flexibility improved. They were leaner and trimmer, without changing what they ate. What's more, the women were so energized, they became 27 percent more active. No other program—whether diet, medication, or aerobic exercise—has ever achieved comparable results.

Strong Women Stay Young shows women how to get the same remarkable benefits at home or in the office, working out just twice a week. Individualized instructions get couch potatoes started—and help exercise buffs break through plateaus. Significant improvements are seen after just four weeks. This major new book features:

                                * Eight simple, safe exercises done standing or seated—no sweat, no special clothes
                                * Fully illustrated step-by-step instructions that any woman can customize to her needs
                                * Important new information on muscle, bone, balance, and fitness—explaining why this program works
                                * Progress logs for the critical first 12 weeks
                                * Bonus: complete strength-training program to do at the gym

This scientifically tested program is proven safe and effective for beginning, intermediate, and advanced exercisers. All it takes is two short sessions a week to improve how you feel, what you can do, and how you look—for the rest of your life!

This is the revised edition of "Strong Women Stay Young", and in this edition there have been quite a few changes in the basic weight-training routine offered in the original edition of this book. The author offers a series of eight weight-training exercies which can be performed at home with equipment consisting only of a set of ankle weights and a set of dumbbells. The basic workout includes a new and very effective warm-up exercise, then three leg exercise done with ankle weights, theee arm exercises to be perfomed with free weights, and finally a calf-stretching exercise done using your own body weight. The instructions for doing each exercise are very clear. Another great feature of this book (compared to some other weight-training books for women) is that the models shown doing the excercises look like real women , and many of them are even older women.

This book is aimed primarily at older (post-menopausal) women who want to maintain their bone density. However, as a woman in my forties who wanted to start a weight-training program at home, I found it to my right on target for my needs as well. I've been using the program for a few months, and now I've added some additional exercises for the abdomen given in the last part of the book.

I've used the techniques in this book for many years and at 45 years old am still capable of lifting and carrying 75lb boxes without strain or injury. Practicing these exercises and making them part of my daily routine has given me the strength, stamina and confidence to continue to work in my field of expertise.

I do not diet. I think fad excercises are dangerous. The excercises and tips in this book will be with me the rest of my life. My strength has increased, not my bulk. It's sensible and anyone can do it regardless of age. I have been on this program for 5 months and inches of me are gone! This is practical and necessary for all who wish to stay active and live a better life.

"Sometimes our inside-the-head world gets so crammed with what other people think that what we think gets squished out our ears or something." So laments the young protagonist Molly-Be-Gone in C. Drew Lamm's "Stay True," the title story in this impressive collection of short tales about teenage girls finding strength within themselves (and bringing it forth for the whole world to see). The contributing authors read like the women's wing of a young adult literature hall of fame: M.E. Kerr shows us a girl who rejects her parents' strait-laced culture and follows her true love; Rita Williams-Garcia tells the exuberant story of a young woman whose crazy dancing earns societal ostracism but brings her inner happiness; and Norma Fox Mazer offers a compelling tale about Grace, who learns to rise above the stigmatism she receives because of her size. Marian Flandrick Bray, Andrea Davis Pinkney, and Peni R. Griffin are among the other writers who make an inspiring appearance. The particulars of family structure, ethnicity, and geography may vary widely, but the young women in these stories are all fighting the good fight toward becoming independent women. As Molly-Be-Gone remembers, "We were fighting the alien girls living inside our heads and racing around in our guts. But we made a pact that night to try. To stay true to ourselves and each other." (Ages 12 and older) --Brangien Davis

This is a series of short stories about girls, and especially about girls who are strong and able to take care of themselves.

Miranda is struggling to find something wrong with her mother's new boyfriend so she can convince her mother to drop him. Bebe would like to be an engineer, but her grandmother has never heard of any black female engineers, so she won't let Bebe follow her dream.

Tory thought she had her whole life mapped out, but then she meets the son of her family's maid and begins to rethink her entire future. Grace struggles with the fact that she is so large and awkward compared with the rest of her family.

Cindy gets a fairy godmother to make her beautiful and popular on the night of a big dance. Marguerite was always the crazy one in her family, and never cared what anyone else thought of her. Now that she is in college, she's set her sights on a handsome, quiet boy.

Consuela struggles against her traditional Latino family. Liz goes to live in a home with domestic violence. Monica fights to be allowed to go to Paris as her parents promised. Molly is sad that her childhood friend has changed, until she accidentally ready her friend's notebook and realizes she hasn't changed on the inside.

Princess Rowena is courted by many wonderful met, but she wants to make a good decision about who to marry, so she gets advice from a witch.

This was a good group of stories. There was some high quality writing here. I especially liked the stories that were takes on fairy tales, although some of the realistic stories were good as well.

4 out of 5 stars Stay True: Short Stories for Strong Girls.......2006-12-16

When it comes to a book of short stories this book really deserves the rating I gave it! How would you say what's going on in a girls mind well than in this book. When I say that this was a really good book I mean it. The content really says a lot because it is very well written, and the editor choose great stories that really portrays the imagination and feeling running through a young girls brain. When a girl whose mother is single and has a problem with some of her mom's boy friends and so she drives them off and the most recent guy she really hates but then he gets bitten on the job by some lunatic and she feels sorry for him and she finally approves of him. Or when Cindy a girl who never fits in to the crowd gets a fairy godmother who makes her popular and the most beautiful girl in her high school, when she gets a taste of this new life at the high school dance, she decides that she doesn't want to be "cool" and the importance of being her self! When a mother decides to follow her dream and she forgets her promise to her 15-year-old daughter whom she promised to send to Europe for her 16th birthday. She stands in a protest until her mother will send her to France. "Why am I so different," this thought runs through all our minds at some point in time in our lives. "When I look at my siblings I wonder why it looks like I don't belong in this family, I mean look at me!"
I still say that this editor choose some meaningful stories that portray the true thoughts in all of us.

4 out of 5 stars Sad in a Good Way.......2004-01-31

Have you ever been looking to become one with the stars and ended up saying good-bye to a horse who would have the chance to reach them? Then you are amazingly like Consuela, a young teen (from the story "The Pale Mare") who lives in a Latin American community on the outskirts of Los Angeles California. Conseula dreams of being an astronomer. But in her family such an idea is frowned upon. Her parents' idea is to have her work for them at the "Charreada" (an event where people rope horses and pull them to the ground hurting them.) and then to marry a "nice boy" and have children. Well Consuela thinks that the nice boy and astronomy should go hand in hand.
I really enjoyed the book. Most of the stories in this collection are heart wrenching and sad, in a good kind of way. The endings touch the heart and make the soul truly feel for the protagonist. Also most of the stories had such great detail that you felt as if you could actually be at the protagonist's side at that exact time. There were a few stories that were so realistic that you could almost feel the pain and anguish that the main character felt. Like the story "The Transformations of Cindy R." The detail gives you such a sense of how Cindy felt and the atmosphere that she was in. Although the book was amazingly written there were a few stories with absolutely no detail at all. Like the story "Crazy as a Daisy", it says that Daisy is unique and special but doesn't tell you how she is either of these. I think that all around this collection was an awesome book that is a must read for those who love sad stories.

4 out of 5 stars This book can give you a big impact!.......2002-02-01

I feel that by reading this book it has made me stronger. There was alot of differnt side stories that got kind of confusing. But I think over all it was a really good book. I don't see myself reading it again though. The book started with a story about this girl that lived her her mom and dad in a pretty ok neighborhood, exept for her family. The Dad was an alcoholic and the Mom wasnt much better so the girl had no one to turn to. One day the police came and took her parents away so she was forced to a new family... The book mostly talked about how she came to adjust to the new life style. This book really made me realize as the reader about whats going on in this world. A lot of people dont realize it because there familes arent bad, but I think this book was a really big eye opener!

4 out of 5 stars Better when you read them all........2001-05-23

Each story in this collections seems to represent a facet of a girl's youth, whether it be dealing with her self imagine, or standing up and fighting for her dreams. When read as a collection, I think these stories pull together to present a realistic picture of the trials faced by teen girls.

5 out of 5 stars Quick Help in the Kitchen.......2007-01-18

I have 3 copies of this book. One for my kitchen, one for my office and, as a practicing counselor, one to loan to clients when I tell them they need to have family meals and they say they don't like to cook or don't have time. I have tried about half of these recipes and there wasn't one my family didn't like. Also, these recipes don't just say they are quick and easy, but they really are. They don't use weird ingredients. This is a cookbook for anyone who wants great food and not a lot of preparation.

                                        5 out of 5 stars An all-time favorite.......2006-06-26

This has been one of my favorites for years, a real go-to book. Unlike most cookbooks that make time claims, most of the recipes here really do come in close to their ten-minute limit, and I'm not a particularly fast cook. The book is divided into eight sections: Appetizers and Snacks; Soups and Chowders; Salads; Chicken, Turkey, Beef, Pork and Lamb; Fish and Shellfish; Pasta; Vegetables and Side Dishes; and Desserts. It also has a sturdy interior spiral binding so it lies flat when open.

I've tried maybe a dozen recipes (some standouts: curried carrot soup, broiled scallops with bread crumbs, berry gratin, caramelized apples) and would have no qualms about serving them to company. I have four books in this series, and though they're all quite good, I find this to be the best.

I'd like to respectfully address reviewer Jim Owen. I'm sorry for his poor experience with the book, but I looked up the recipe he referred to, and he's a bit off. The noted amount of butter mixture was to be spread on SIX FULL pita breads, not four halves. That's three times the amount he apparently mistakenly used. It's unfortunate that he based his opinion of this exceptional book on faulty information. If you're trying to decide whether or not to buy it, please note that his was the ONLY negative review among a dozen. Seems quite unfair that it was chosen for a spotlight review.

I have a couple of quibbles with the book: It has no page headers to tell you what section you're in, and the index is less than comprehensive. But I still unequivocally rate it five stars on the strength, variety, and reliability of its recipes.

4 out of 5 stars Easy to Follow & Simple.......2003-12-30

These are great to use for a busy person.

And Jim Owen --- writer of review about orange butter.... you need to mix the ingredients, if you had all the OJ left, that's why there was no flavor in the butter.

                                        Think about it.

5 out of 5 stars Full of unique, delicious, and (pretty) fast recipes.......2003-08-15

When I checked this book out from the library, I was expecting your typical Campbell's Soup casseroles and whatnot. After the first five recipes I made were fabulous, unique, and restaurant quality, I knew I had to buy the cookbook. By the time it arrived, my mom had already fallen in love with the recipes I'd been making, and ordered her own copy as well!

The title is a little misleading; most of these recipes have taken longer than 10 minutes, between pounding chicken breasts, peeling shrimp, boiling pasta, etc. Still, they're quicker than most meals, and they avoid the horrible casseroles that all end up tasting the same. The skillet recipes are particularly good, and the seafood dishes really are 10 minutes from start to finish. The cookbook often calls for more sauce (and particularly, more butter) than is necessary, but the real charm of the book is the novel combinations of just 5 ingredients that make delicious and unique tastes.

                                        2 out of 5 stars Disappointing.......2003-01-29

I'm surprised to be the only one here giving this book a less-than-stellar rating. I find most of the recipes impractical in 10 minutes. The authors seemed so bent on their 10 minute goal that they skimped a lot of places, (while on the other hand, there are numerous instances where ingredients were added that were completely unnecessary). If you're looking to make a dish in 10 minutes, get over it - these recipes CANNOT be done in 10 minutes, most of them.

Take for example recipes which call for roasted peppers. OK, you can't roast peppers in 10 minutes, so they suggest buying them in a jar. Good enough, but then the recipe calls for the actual number of red peppers to use, which is not the way they are packaged in a jar.

Also, I'm sorry, but even a pounded chicken breast cannot be properly cooked in 4-6 minutes. And they aren't really counting the prep time - getting them out of the package, cleaning them, pounding them, etc.

Lastly, I have encountered many recipes in the book which call for amounts of ingredients that are unnecessary. For the pita breads with orange butter, the recipe calls for, I believe, 1/2 cup butter and 1/3 cup orange concentrate (which, incidentally, not one person at my party could taste), then the instructions say to brush 4 pita halves with the butter-orange mixture, which leaves about 98% of the liquid unused.

                                        A big disappointment.
