I was very pleased with the speed of delivery and the quality of the product. This book really looks like new, it is in excellent condition. I would definitely buy from this seller again.

5 out of 5 stars Best so far!.......2007-02-07

This book is by far the best so far in this wonderful series. Hill's characters are so very real, that they seem to come right off the page. His portrayal of Dalziel in this one is right on the mark. Dalziel is at his very best here - sharp, to-the-point, and oh so clever! Beware if anyone thinks they can pull a fast one on him. He has a nose for stories and fabrications like no copper you'll ever meet! This book won a Gold Dagger Award for the best crime novel of the year when this was written in 1990, and it well deserved this honour. It is stunning, and the climax is something that will leave you gasping. And Hill portrays his opposites (Dalziel and Pascoe) each at their own opposite ends of the spectrum. They are a formidable team, and beware to any crooks that try to get away with something in their patch! I can't say enough good things about this book. It left me breathless, and I can't wait to continue on with the series.

the language is a lit' bit confused for non-native english reader. I don't know about you guys, I cannot even digest the first 50 pages.

5 out of 5 stars Mystery play come mystery novel.......2004-03-28

This is one novel, I couldn't put down and finished in a little over a day. Hill has a great style. It was been sometime that I novel had me reaching for a dictionary to look up definitions. The Yorkshire dialect was just perfect.
The characters are well drawn and the plot winds in on itself just enough. I am looking forward to reading other Reginald Hill novels.

4 out of 5 stars Interesting, with an ending I am still not sure about..........2002-07-15

Regardless of other reviewers and the difficulty of Hill's linguistic excursions sometimes, Hill is still one of the top producers of well-written mysteries of this current batch. This particular book had its good points and its bad points, but overall the book was a great read. I enjoyed the introductions that use the York Cycle of Mystery Plays. Apparently, like many other European countries such as Germany, theatricals explaining the crucifixion and resurrection of Christ, and in this particular group of plays, the period of creation and Lucifer's involvement in free agency, was used because people at that time simply could not pick up the Bible and read it. It was written in Latin, and only the clergy (and some royalty) had the ability to read. I expect that these theatricals were an extremely popular change of pace from the daily grind and I look forward to learning more concerning them, now that Hill has brought them to my attention.

As usual Dalziel is his perturbing, acidic, and curmudgeonly self. He doesn't like it when he ends up on the other side as a witness to a crime, that he's having a heck of a time proving actually happened as a homicide and not an accident. Like most of us, we don't like it when the shoe is on the other foot, and Dalziel doesn't take well to being seen as wrong. In the end...well...that would ruin the story. Not going to give it away. Pascoe has his own set of problems to deal with. He's still recuperating from the last case that nearly killed him, and his more sensitive psyche has taken a beating. His wife gets him involved in some of her pet projects, which he is not crazy about...but it ends up being of some assistance to providing keys of understanding to Dalziel's witnessed crime, and to the person who is writing Dalziel letters about her future self-inflicted demise.

This side story confuses a few readers, but life is never so tidy as to give us one problem at a time. IF it were, I think more crimes and problems would be solved. Dalziel can't be bothered with figure out who the looney is who is writing him suicide notes (and the writer knows this). But as usual, Pascoe gets saddled with this annoying problem, and it weighs on him. I really am not sure what happened at the end...but it was certainly not what I expected.

A sign of a good writer for me is one where I deliberately go back and look for his other books, rather than just browsing through and picking up a mystery that 'looks' good. I did that for too long, and it ends up wasting my time. When I want a good writer with a good plot and decent characters, I know where to go look for one. Hill still has plenty I have not read yet. Time to go get another!

                    Book Description

The Rhinegold and The Valkyrie comprises Volume One of Russell's adaptation of the Ring cycle by German composer Richard Wagner. Woton has exhausted himself and his godly resources to have a mighty fortress built with the labor of the giants, Fasolt and Fafnir. But in his bargaining with them, he has promised the fair Freia, keeper of the golden apple tree whose fruit gives power and immortality to the gods. The giants come to collect their pay, and only Logé, the trickster god, can find something to offer the giants in exchange: the Rhinegold. The only problem is, Woton doesn't have the Rhinegoldyet!

1 out of 5 stars Utterly disappointing piece of kitsch.......2006-11-08

The text is OK and the way the story is cut up in frames and assembled is competent, but the drawings are the work of a hack, often tacky and always styleless and garishly colored. The costumes and settings are totally lacking in imagination and carry no semantic weight. The attempts to create a visual equivalent for the musical leitmotifs of the operas are too literal and very much in the spirit of a mechanical translation from opera to comic book. An affront to connoisseurs of either opera or comics or both. Only valuable as a kitschy curiosity.

5 out of 5 stars Fresh adaptation of a cool opera.......2005-05-23

Ring of the Nibelung is the first of two books that make up a very literal adaptation of Wagner's opera to comic book form. It may seem strange to adapt an opera (all sound in most forms of distribution) to an all visual medium, but in many cases the sets and the visual element were a huge part of opera. This is a very visual opera and the comic does it right.

The plot: Mermaids who guard a small piece of gold in the Rhine river pass the time by making fun of a Nibelung (a little dwarf type thing) who thinks they are hot. The gold they are guarding is very beautiful but also powerful if it can be forged into a ring. This ring would give who ever wear's it the power to command the entire race of Nibelung. The catch is the ring must be made by someone who has given up love forever. Love isn't doing the Nibelung much good, since he is not at all good to look at and so he ends up making the ring. From then on everyone wants the ring. It passes hands again and again and always in bad circumstances.

Despite questionable material (all of it comes from Wagner) this is an excellent comic for school libraries. It is a well done adaptation that could spark interest in the subject and is definitely very readable. There is also a short introductory section about techniques that were used in making the comic, that was interesting for me and would appeal to teens who are interested in drawing their own comics.

I highly recommend this adaptation. It keeps the detail from the opera, and the visual nature of a comic book says more than just words could. I finished this and I was like - where is book two? I want it now.

                    5 out of 5 stars Buy This!!!.......2005-01-19

This is a coupling of the excellent graphic novel of The Ring.
Do yourself a real favor, and buy both parts-immediately.

There is something that hearing this monumental work only hints
at, and that is the graphic, ie. photorealism of the staged work
itself, a precursor to films. If you are new to The Ring, or are an old veteran, this, and other, graphic novelizations of
The Ring, will help bring it to stunning life.

                    5 out of 5 stars Admirable Work!.......2004-09-22

                    P. Craig Russell has created a masterpiece of comic book out of a materpiece of Opera. A absolute delight in every opera fan's colelctions! (BTW, I love P. Craig Russell's other opera adaptions, but Ring of the Nibelung is the best by a mile)

4 out of 5 stars Opera Manifests In New Form.......2003-05-11

The story of one of Wagner's timeless operas, adapted here into comic form. I do not know the original, but this version makes me wish to find out more. It is comprised of 4 parts collected into two books, corresponding to the original 4 operas, which were independant but held together in a loose confederation to make on complete whole.

The first quadrant, The Rhinegold, begins with the founding of the gods and the tree of life, before advancing to when the story begins, in the middle ages. A dwarf, Alberich, is spurned by a trio of mermaids and steals their precious Rhinegold in order to make a ring of power from it, with which he can rule the world. The scene changes to Voton, leader of the gods, admiring his newly built Valhalla. The price for this was his wife's sister, who gives life to the gods, and when the giants come for their payment, Voton attempts vainly to talk them out of it. Finally, an agreement is made; if the god can get Alberich's ring, they will exchange that for the girl. And so Voton and Loge the Trickster climb down into the depths of the earth, where the dwarves are held under cruel sway. They trick the new leader and steal his ring, along with a tiara of shapeshifting and all of his gold, but not before the ring is cursed to bring death upon whomever else wears it. Voton is mesmerised by the power, but finally convinced to give it up by the eldest spirit; immediately the ring brings death, when one giant kills his brother coveting it.

The Valkyrie begins with a hotblooded young man finding shelter from pursuers in a lonely house, telling of deeds done in misguided honor; his host gives him shelter in waiting for a duel on the morn. That night Siegmund and Sieglinde fall in love, the former taking the ancient sword and with it his host's wife. Fricka, goddess of marriage, demands that Voton avenge this, even though they are his children; finally his will is overcome and he demands that a Valkyrie give Siegmund defeat in battle. She defies him, but Voton steps in and lets him die. As her punishment Brunehilde is taken from godhood and locked on a cliff, to be wed by any hero to find her.

The mini-series is continued in Vol. 2.

Even such a long summation can barely do this dense and powerful opera justice. Rather than the standard practice of rewriting or removing speech in parts, nearly everything is kept, translated directly from the original words of Wagner. The translation itself is very nice, keeping an archaic and formal syntax, while remaining accessible to modern readers. It is similar to Shakespeare or any contemporary, high without pretnetion. While the music cannot be included, the songs remain, to be fleshed out instead by lush art. The parallel goes deeper, in fact; as mentioned in the introduction, where Wagner's music has its lietmotifs, quickly recognizable strains that pull the whole together, so does the art include its own repeated motifs.

The story is classic, and told as well as befits a master. The politics between the gods is as fierce or more than that between men, and between them battles and intrigue rage. No major point is left unexplored, nothing forgotten and left to the wayside. Each character introduced comes back to play at least once, most exiting only through death. So much goes on that it is dizzying to keep up, but the intention is never to leave the reader behind, so it isn't overly difficult to follow. Even the reintroductions that catch the reader up on the events of each previous part are handled deftly. The art is vivid and colorful, very detailed and realistically shaded and textured. At times it seems more like acrylic paint than simple color press. The scenery is well detailed, matched by the people, whose actions and expressions are each striking and individual. While characters are seen from many angles and perspectives, anatomy of each is still proper. The story is very visual and cinematic; some places are very dense and wordy, while sometimes pages go by with no words needed. The fights in particular flow this way, becoming very abstract, yet the action clearly laid out. Russel is very comfortable with his ability to tell a tale however it needs to be told, certainly.

4 out of 5 stars Great book for a certain mindset........2001-12-02

I deeply enjoyed and appreciated "Rheingold" when I first read it. It's a well worded retelling of the myths, to be sure. But the main strength here is the sincerity and devotion to detail. Grundy writes as one who respects and knows the people and Gods that the myths deal with. One probably needs to be Forn Sidh/Asatru to fully sympathize with the spirit this book is writen in. True, the Gods are presented mythically as well as mystically, but the devout will approach this book with holy recognition. At the least, one should have a background in migration era Teutonic culture to see the well used details.

True, Grundy will probably never be as good a writer as Wagner was a musician. But Wagner's christianized, Romanticized, bowdlerized wanna-be Ring Cycle plot is far flatter than the mythic awe Grundy compells. (I love HEARING the Ring Cycle, but the libretto is egregious.) What Wagner treated with sublimated condescention, Grundy exposes and reverently handles. That alone is worth the ticket for those who see the greater truths in the stories.

If one is looking for a "sword and sorcery" romp, "Rheingold" is bound to be a disappointment. Many historical novel types will probably be neutral on it's metaphysical emphasis as well. It's a specific and special audience that will understand "Rheingold"'s importance.

4 out of 5 stars Strong story but a little weak in the character department.......2001-06-16

Stephan Grundy seems to have gotten much better at writing by the time he got to 'Attila's Treasure'. The characters and dailogue are a little weak here, but he has done a superb job of making a coherent and consistent narrative given the diversity of the sources and their contradictory nature.
Overall, the story is presented and told very well. Grundy's strong point is his proficiency at creating imagery with words.

                    3 out of 5 stars Rhinegold, Grundy.......2000-11-12

I am reading this book now for the third of forth time now. I think it is a nice book: a strong story and easy to read. However I miss the spark. Wagners telling of the same story grabs you and holds you. Even when the music stops after 15 hours. Grundy couldn't do that to me. I read this before I go to sleep, to relax. Some parts however are strong: I like the part about Runes very much, although I wanted something more than just the translations of the old Icelandic verses. And the again, sometimes the use of Runes is coming back in the story itself. I think the Gods are a little to human: more focused on women than on the education of mankind. Also Sigmund and Sinfjotli's life in the woods is a little disturbing (can't think of a correct describtion of the feeling) to me. All together: I like the book but I think it is not more than that; a likeable book.

I'm currently reading Rhinegold for the second time and I can't put it down. I wish I had picked up a hardcover copy when I had the chance. If you are a fan of Tolkien or fantasy in general you owe it to yourself to pick up a copy of Rhinegold. It may take a little effort to keep track of all the characters and how they relate to the story but the effort is well worth the reward of this rich tale.

                                  Book Description

NOCH EIN BIER: (Another Beer) describes the struggles of misunderstood, hardworking but alcoholic men responding to demands and pressures of families, religion, wars, prohibition, advancing technology, addiction, and community derision. From little on, in and around Walsrode, a small and very ethnic town, four men develop into confirmed alcoholics. After they are involved in an accident, a barber who knows them and nearly all else about the town, retraces their lives to answer questions such as how and why their addictions developed, was God punishing them for insobriety, and on balance, did each contribute more than he took from family and community. The main characters are a former farmer who was 'brained" by his wife, a farmer with too few resources, a conscientious carpenter, and a successful businessman. Their responses to changing conditions in a small town and surrounding farms from 1900 to 1953 are described in relation to their drinking problems. An easy, nostalgic read for long reflection.

These bestselling doctors walk you through their ten proven stages to recovery from codependency that results from external circustances. Humans are susceptible to codependency because of our sinful tendency to use defense mechanisms to fool ourselves. In codependent relationships, deceitful games are played, and important Christian principles are often taken out of context and abused. God wants us to have healthy relationships with a balance between being dependent and independent. The doctors describe how the most effective means of overcoming codependent relationships is to establish or deepen a relationship with Christ Himself. They describe the causes of codependency, pointing out the factors that perpetuate it, and lead readers through their ten stages of recovery.

This is a must read for individuals with codependant issues. It is written from a biblical perspective by three Drs. Is uses scripture all the way through it. It is very easy reading and very simple to understand. The very best book on codependancy I have ever read. I use it to counsel people.

5 out of 5 stars Very helpful without being preachy.......2005-12-28

I found the information in this book very helpful. It is easy to read and understand. It is encouraging. It provides insight into what's going on when you're trying to cast off old ways of living that hold you back.

This book is worth reading, not only for the information to help you grow personally, but to be more aware and understanding of others in your life.

Although the authors may be religious, this does not come across heavily in the book and would not complicate a non-religious person using the information and insights to change things they don't like.

5 out of 5 stars This book really is ground breaking.......2005-06-08

Having been raised in a home with an alcoholic father and abusive parents in general, I was left in a codependant stuper. At thrity-something and after the birth of a fourth child I found myself in a serious depression I couldn't shake. Having gone through years of counseling and having dealt with much of my past, I was suprised to see it creep up again. This book gave me some powerfully accurate information as well as some great tools for dealing with my situation. I highly recommend this book to anyone who wants to finally be rid of the old tapes in their head.

5 out of 5 stars It certainly is a choice.......2004-03-01

Don't let the title fool you. Although this is a book about dealing with failed adult relationships, the main emphasis in on the phenomena of co-dependency. Unresolved issues of childhood are the primary cause, and Drs Hemfelt, Minnerth and Meier go through many real life case studies that lead the reader to examine their own life, as well as the life of thier "significant other". Realizing how your lowly filled "love tank" is affecting your life is a powerful tool for recovery. Realizing you have a loving heavenly father is a key to recovery as well. I think this book is excellent for anybody experiencing a significant problem with a marriage or other long term relationship.

5 out of 5 stars Shines a Whole New Light on Vegetarian Cuisine.......2007-02-18

Last week I went through my cookbooks, to see if I could weed some out, because I have too many to mention. It's hard getting rid of a cookbook, especially one with a few recipes in it that you've come to love. But I've scanned the recipes I need to keep forever into my MacBook. However, there were an even dozen I couldn't part with. These are books I turn to time and time again, even though I consider myself somewhat of a gourmet chef.

DELICIOUS JAMAICA is one of the books I kept and to my way of thinking it's just about the best vegetarian cookbook out there. If you like exotic cooking and you've given up meat or just plain don't eat it, then this is the book for you. Veggies don't have to be bland, just try the "Callalu Run Down" on page 30 and you'll see what I mean. Then there's the "Yam Run Down Casserole" which is simply too tasty to be true. If you're not a vegetarian, you can make a lot of the recipes in this book as a side dish. The "Spice Rice" for example works very well with just about anything. There is a whole lot more in this nifty cookbook that belongs with any serious collection of Caribbean cookbooks.

                                    5 out of 5 stars Great cookbook.......2003-01-21

When I became vegetarian I worried about missing out on some of my favorite flavors like jamaican jerk. This book has a number of terrific recipes for doing jerk potatoes, jerk vegetables and even jerk tofu (I haven't tried that yet but certainly will). It has all the classics in here - pepperpot soup, plantains, etc.I've only scratched the surface in terms of making my way through the recipes but so far so good.

                                    5 out of 5 stars A practical Jamaican Cookbook.......2000-03-18

We bought this book last year before leaving for a vacation in Jamaica. In Jamaica we had rented a house that had a cook. She was a wonderful Jamaican woman unfamiliar with vegetarian cooking. We showed her this book. She was familiar with many of the dishes in this book, but in non-vegetarian forms. With this book she was able to adapt her recipes and we had a wonderful week of home-cooked Jamaican, vegetarian meals. At the end of our vacation she was delighted when we left her our copy of this book.

5 out of 5 stars "A Great Cultural Book on Great I-Tal Food".......1998-05-13

I had the pleasure of meeting and dining in the home of Yvonne Mc Calla Sobers of Kingston, Jamaica in July 1997. It was indeed memorable, to sit and rest after the long drive from the northcoast, in the hot midday, and enjoy the quiet breezy veranda of the Lingunea Mansion gifted to her by her childhood friend, Prime Minister Hon. Michael Manley, Chatting in depth about Jamaica, Food and Life, with her Sons and Herself, and reminesing of a childhood in Jamaica when "Bustamante Backbone" was a treat.

The Ben Johnson Vegetable Stew, made of all the great leftovers and pieces of vegetable in the fridge made for an adventurous treat on a hot afternoon, when shopping was out of the question. Sweet, Flavorful, Rich, Filling, Heaven in a bowl.

Yvonne treated us to her Fried Breadfruit, and some creamy vegeterian Solomon Gundy, which I have yet to locate outside Jamaica, namely in Kingston. Her conversations about the 38 different Mango's that were introduced to Jamaica and the West Indies, assures you that this isn't just some Local Cook.

We brought with us 2 bunches of country Gynip to the dinner party, and that was the payment for the truly fabulous country delicacies. approximatly $1.00 u.s. Unbelievable.

Indeed Mrs Sobers, is an internationally known consultant, responsible for bringing many international development projects closer to the people of Jamaica, instead of just the Tourist Regions. Hearing Her name mentioned daily on the radio stations in Jamaica, and seeing her Photograph in the Newspapers Islandwide, makes one know this is a Very Special Lady, and to be invited to sit on her special part of the earth and enjoy the treat of her hand is truly a dream come true for this aspiring cookbook writer.

I Advise, if you are looking for a Great New concept in Vegeterian Healthy Cooking Buy This Book and Share it With someone You Love.

My Recommendations - Hot and Spicy Shepards Pie, Ben Johnson Stew, Cashew and Gungo Loaf, Jamdown Curry, JamaicanStyle Veggy Burgers, Maro! ons, Callalalu - in all the styles; and of course Breadfruit, Tropical Gingerbread, Number 11 Mango Chutney named for one of the 38 types of Mango found in Jamaica; and Chef Yvonnes' Special Ital Rasta Pasta; (much better than that place on the hill in ochi.) This book is recommended for Senior Citizens, Dieters, Fat Free and Low FatDiets, Diabetics, Children, and Fussy Folks. The food is so delicious they will never know how healthy it really is. Guaranteed.
