A murder in a ruined monastery, an FBI agent on the trail of stolen art, a British relief worker, an American billionaire in cahoots with a Chinese minister, and a beautiful woman with a dual heritage are the key ingredients in this thrilling new addition to Eliot Pattison's fascinating series featuring former Beijing detective inspector Shan Tao Yun. Released unofficially from a work camp in Tibet and now living with the forbidden lamas he has sworn to protect from Chinese efforts to eradicate them and their culture, the enigmatic inspector is caught in a web of political intrigue between the Chinese official who arranged his release and the pompous and corrupt Minister of Culture who will stop at nothing, including murder, to possess the ancient treasure believed hidden in the monastery. Shan becomes more complex and multidimensional as he faces new challenges in this adventure, including repairing his relationship with his long-missing son. The action and the central character move from the mountains and provincial capitals of Tibet, to Beijing, and even America. This is the fourth novel in Patison's unique and engrossing series; readers discovering him for the first time will want to read his backlist, especially the Edgar Award-winning The Skull Mantra. --Jane Adams
Book Description
Disgraced former Beijing Inspector Shan Tao Yun has been living in the remote mountains of Tibet since his unofficial release from a work camp. Without status, official identity, or the freedom to return to his former home in Beijing, he's lived with the forbidden lamas for the past year. But now there's apparently been a murder in a ruined monastery and the very officials who exiled Shan are after his help. In a baffling case involving the FBI, Chinese Ministers, and British relief workers, Shan travels from Tibet to Beijing to the U.S. to find the links between murder, missing art, his former gulag, and his own long-unseen son.
Customer Reviews:
an excellant series.......2006-03-22
i don't like stories that go into series as a general rule but this was well written and captivating enough to keep me entertained
Beautiful prose .......2006-01-24
The book is written with a beautifully eloquent prose. The author truly loves and understands the Orient. He painted an intriguing visualization, but in all honesty, this repetitive prose gets in the way of the character development and storyline. By page 167, unfortunately, the characters simply couldn't continue to hold my interest and I put the book away.
Fantastic!.......2005-11-12
What an incredible read. I feel as though I've missed out on so much by over-looking books involving the far east. I felt they would never appeal to me since I've never had an opportunity to explore the culture. Beautiful Ghosts took me on a trip that I did not wish to have terminated. I was enthralled. What a ride! Former detective Yun is a unique and intriguing character and I can't wait to read more.
The landscape and character descriptions are so vivid and real that the ability to imagine them comes so easily. By the end of the book I was tempted to contact my travel agent!
If you desire something different and want a unique mental trip away from the ordinary, I very highly recommend Mr Pattison.
A World Apart.......2004-06-22
Eliot Pattison's details quickly transport the reader to a world that seems so distant in time and space and yet sadly is a part of the world we live in now. He teaches the reader so very much about the Tibetan culture and the Chinese Cultural Revolution through his books while weaving a tale of intrigue and surprise twists. Pattison's stories tell of man's weaknesses and also celebrate the power of compassion and spirituality.
Engrossing.......2004-06-12
Pattison reminds me of Mitchner's early books, with his tremendous empathy for the people and culture. This is one of those books that you don't want to come to an end.

Fascinating, thorough, entertainingly written.......2006-08-10
In 1892, a young woman checked into San Diego's finest luxury resort, the Hotel del Coronado. Acting strangely from the first, she increasingly attracted the mystified attention and sympathy of the hotel staff who watched her deteriorate physically and emotionally. Four days later, after the most violent storm in memory, she was found dead on the stairs outside the hotel. Beside her lay a handgun, and in her right temple was a bullet wound. She was never definitively identified, and the reasons for her stay, and her larger concerns, were never established. She remains forever "the Beautiful Stranger" whose ghost haunts the great hotel to this day. Ghostly events involving her are frequent, and often result in a sudden move (a "dead move") by occupants of her room, who are terrorized by flickering lights and curtains blowing when windows are closed, and other phenomena. The Heritage Department of the hotel has done a superb job putting this well-illustrated book together from various official records. I have found this book very useful in putting together a novel entitled "Dead Move: Sherlock Holmes and the Haunting Mystery of Coronado" (Clockower Books, 2007).

I love the weetzie bat books..but.......2004-07-08
This book, like Goat Girls has 2 previously published stories:Missing Angel Juan and Baby Be-Bop, both in which are fantastic. Missing Angel Juan is a story about Angel Juan and Witch Baby who fall in love. Baby Be-Bop is just as amazing as Angel Juan but has 3 different parts. It has a really interesting plot with Francesca's amazing writing style. If you want to buy this book, I'd reccomend Dangerous Angels instead because it has all 5 stories, and not just 2 like this one. All the weetzie bat stories rock.

Great Book for young adults; its not about vampires.......2003-03-13
I enjoyed this book. I enjoyed the relationship between the grandfather and Johnny. This book is not about vampires but about the alienation that is experienced because of ones race. Johnny is Native American who finds it difficult to understand what that means; and Rebecca is half human and half vampire who finds it tempted to blend into the human world despite the pressures from her vampire world. This book explores the challenges they experience and the solutions they try to come up with. Great book.
Uniquely Gothic.......1999-12-22
The Vampire's Beautiful Daughter is about a teenage boy named Johnny who realizes that his identity crisis is miniscule compared to Rebecca, the exotically beautiful half-vampire who has only a few days to choose whether she should be a vampire or remain mortal. Together, the two diverse teens each find their own painfully right paths. This book has humorous twists on the serious realities of being different.
A Great love Story with a modern gothic twist.......1998-11-20
I thought The Vampire's Beautiful Daughter was an excellent book. I picked it up and read it all the way through without stopping. It's about a boy who moves to a new town and has to go to a different school. He meets. well, a half-vampire. He falls in love with her and screws up her choice to stay half human or become a full vampire. You'll have to read it to find out the details, but I truly reccommend it.

Book Description
Dietrich's Ghosts is the first major English-language study to look at the star system under the Third Reich. Erica Carter argues that after the Weimar period, the German star system was reorganized to foster an anti-modernist mode of spectatorship geared to an appreciation of the beautiful and the sublime.
Carter discusses the reconfiguring of film production and exhibition around idealist aesthetic principles and offers case studies of three stars. Emil Jannings figures as an exemplar of what Carter terms the völkisch sublime, while Marlene Dietrich emerges as a figure at the crossroads of modernist and idealist conceptions of beauty. A provocative chapter on Zarah Leander in the feature films of the early war years portrays this star as a post-Dietrich emblem of the supposed sublimity of a fascist war.
This unprecedented new study reassesses existing paradigms in German film history debates and throws suggestive new light on the icons and popular culture of the Third Reich.

A Beautiful Writer.......2002-04-11
I became hooked on Armanno's writing with the incredibly sensual novel, Gabriella's Book of Fire. I have since undertaken to read all his work. Though his books are hard to acquire in this country, any motivated reader will find the effort more than rewarding. My Beautiful Friend is a gothic ghost story set by the banks of Lake Geneva in a cold, cold winter. There is a dead man around and he is working his way into the hearts of two estranged lovers, Rebecca and Aaron. During the course of this descent into a cold and lonely darkness we are slowly drawn into a world of broken dreams, ghostly visitations, and weird stories of the dead. Vladimir Nabokov even makes a (sort of) appearance, as does the artist and architect Gaudi. Barcelona provides a wonderful setting for a brilliant flashback: this novella within the novel called "The Story of the Dead Man" is one of the most brilliantly sustained pieces of creepy writing that I have ever read - and I have read and loved hundreds of the "classics". Armanno's world is a chilling yet strangely beautiful one. He writes like a poet - with the sensitivity to understand what dreams inspire us and what nightmares terrify us. And these aren't the nightmares of ghoulies or monsters - only the ghoulies and monsters of our own needs and desires. The dead writer, Marcelo Mansini, will stay with you and perhaps haunt you. If he doesn't, then Armanno's writing style certainly will. One day he will be discovered by a wide readership. My Beautiful Friend is a modern classic.
A fine gothic tale of suspense.......1998-01-03
Armanno creates an atmosphere in this novel which feels somewhere between H.P.Lovecraft and Ernest Hemingway. There is an eeriness surrounding the scenes, all of which are set in Montreux, Switzerland. I couldn't wait to turn the page to see what would happen next and seldom before has a novel involved me enough to want to visit the place where the story is set. A story of love gone sour and the intrigue of a lust that can never be, My Beautiful Friend is one of the best books I have read for a very long time.

Gorgeous book!.......2000-09-22
Full of depth and dimension. Figuring out the game is as engaging as the plot of the novel itself. I read this as a teenager, and ten years later Ajibawr and the desert tribes Gregorian describes still intrigue and entice. Better than the first book - more complex. I haven't read the third in the series; I'm a little concerned that it will be a letdown...
Wow! How did I miss this one?.......2000-08-28
I first read Broken Citadel when I was in Jr. High. I loved it then and have since been trying to locate my own copy. I finally found copies of both The Broken Citadel and Castledown. I, too, had to read the second book right away. I couldn't put it down! Now I am seeking a copy of the third book. If you know where I can locate one, PLEASE let me know!
A return to the land of Treclere and Tredana.......2000-03-09
First of all, I am the niece of Joyce Gregorian, the book is dedicated to me, and therefore I am a biased reviewer. Years after her first trip through a broken window in The Broken Citadel, Sibby unexpectedly returns to the alternate universe she thought was only a dream. No longer an elementary school student, she views her old friends differently. And someone from her own universe has followed her this time. A more mature version of The Broken Citadel, some inrigue and romance, but still geared towards the mature younger reader. (Or the escapist adult reader.) As The Broken Citadel was structured around Tarot, Castledown is structured around a chess-like game of Joyce's imagination. The fianl book of the trilogy, The Great Wheel, is structured around the zodiac.
I loved it when I was in Jr. High...EXCELLENT SCI-FI !!!.......1999-03-11
THIS BOOK WAS SO GOOD I HAVE BEEN LOOKING FOR A COPY SINCE I WAS 14!(I AM NOW 33) THE STORY LINE PULLS YOU RIGHT ALONG AND THIS BOOK MADE ME FALL IN LOVE WITH SCI-FI/FANTASY BOOKS. ALSO TRY CHRONICLES OF NARNIA AND ANY URSULA K LEGUIN....HAPPY READING : - )
A fantastic read.......1999-02-03
I absolutely loved this novel. I don't think I even took a full breath in between the Broken Citadel and this. They're both fantastic. Unfortunately it leaves you at such a cliffhanger, and the sequel doesn't seem to be around anywhere...

Making nutritious, homemade baby food has never been so easy!
Baby food doesn't have to come in jars, and making your own at home is not difficult. Baby food is strained, puréed or mashed adult food - just a different version of the food you prepare for yourself.
Here are three good reasons to make baby food at home:
- Knowing what's in it, therefore ensuring healthy and wholesome meals.
- Tailoring the texture to your baby's preferences.
- Shaping baby's tastes and helping him/her learn what fresh foods taste like.
Whether choosing to make all baby's food at home, or just some of it, the blender is a great way to offer new flavors in a baby-friendly texture. Once a child begins to eat table food, there is always an occasion for a fruit smoothie or a nutritious blended dip.
Here's a sampling of the deliciously easy recipes:
-
Six Months and Older: Peach and Pear Bananarama, Melon Madness, Zucchini and Nectarines, Roasted Vegetable Purée
-
Eight Months and Older: Vegetable Paella, Humus for Beginners, Chicken with Red Peppers and Corn, Beefy Broccoli
-
Nine Months and Older: Lemon Raspberry Yogurt, Over the Top Applesauce, Spinach and Tomatoes with Ricotta, Fisherman's Pie
-
Twelve Months and Older: Orange Banana Smoothie, Very Berry Pears, Broccoli and Cauliflower Melt, Veggie Cream Sauce
All the recipes in
Blender Baby Food are accompanied by suggested age guidelines. Also included are lots of great tips for making baby food, storage and freezing guidelines as well as the appropriate way to thaw and reheat food. Plus, none of the recipes calls for any of the salt, sugar, starches or fillers found in many commercially prepared baby foods.
Blender Baby Food helps parents give their baby the best nutritional advantage.
Customer Reviews:
Easy to use~.......2007-10-11
I am a first time mom and a first born. I want details and instructions to work from!
While some might find the details in this book common sense, I love to have exact measurements and formulas. Once you are comfortable with the process you can mix and match your own recipes...the possibilities are endless.
For those of you who may think making food takes too much time, just incorporate this into your normal cooking times. For example, if I am boiling or baking for dinner, then I can easily peel a couple of sweet potatoes and throw them on the stove to boil at the same time.
The book has helped our family save money on baby food from the store (I do buy a couple of jars for eating on the go). AND because it's so much more affordable to make baby food I feel like I can splurge on organic veggies for my little man.
You can do it and this book is a great resource!
Tons of great recipes.......2007-08-28
I have two other baby food cookbooks, and this one has the best selection of healthy, simple food combinations. When your baby is too old for blender food, there are tons of suggestions on how to serve the recipes for older kids and even adults. They also have sample meal plans if you are starting from no knowledge of what to feed a baby. They use lots of different ingredients too, like celery root and beets but mixing them with other foods that make it taste good for kids. The recipes are easy and healthy which is what baby food should be.
Wonderful!!.......2007-08-23
This book is absolutely wonderful. I have been using it often, making a variety of foods straight from our friends and families gardens! It's great to know exactly what is going in my childs food. The chapters are very clear to understand, simple recipes too, with food that we eat on a daily basis. I have already purchased 2 more of this book for gifts and so far they love it too!
Perfect Starter Book.......2007-08-14
This book is simple, and told me exactly what I wanted to know to get started. How long to boil/steam, about how much water to add, etc. I would recommend reading the intro chapters as that is where you get the tips on nitrates, what food you can store (she makes notes on the recipes that don't freeze well), etc. As a first time mom making baby food, it was worth it.
Looks like a pretty good book.......2007-07-27
I haven't tried this cookbook but did read through it. The recipes look rather simple and still flavorful, but there are no pictures, nor does it tell you if each prepared meal can be frozen (like other books I have). I think it's going to be a great reference but probably won't be as popular for me to use as Annabel Karmel's "Top 100 Baby Purees." I look forward to giving it a try and think the recipes will probably be tasty.

wonderful easy cookbook.......2007-09-15
If you are in a hurry or trying to teach someone to cook, this is a wonderful book. Recipes are very simple with 4 ingredients, there are also tips if you want to add more ingredients. I bought this for my daughter who is learning to cook and I was amazed at the nice variety of recipes. I bought one for myself too!
Easy and Tasty.......2007-07-30
The recipes in this book were both easy and tasty. The book is written clearly and all of the recipes are quick and easy. This book made me a star with my teenager. She likes the stir fry recipe and everyone likes the munchy chocolate cookies.
Easy and tasty recipes.......2007-07-16
I've made several recipes from the 4-Ingredient Dinners cookbook and all have been well received. Tonight my kids lapped up the Breaded Pork Chops prepared using Bisquick, saltine cracker crumbs, salt and pepper, egg and a bit of water. The pork chops turned out tasty and relatively healthy since they were cooked over medium-high heat in a nonstick skillet sprayed with nonstick cooking spray.
I am already planning to buy several copies as Christmas gifts.
