Book Description

In a city where someone is murdered almost every day, attorney Michael Abramowitz's death should be just another statistic. But the slain lawyer's notoriety—and his taste for illicit midday trysts—makes the case front-page news in every local paper except the Star, which crashed and burned before Abramowitz did.

A former Star reporter who knows every inch of this town—from historic Fort McHenry to the crumbling projects of Cherry Hill—now-unemployed journalist Tess Monaghan also knows the primary suspect: cuckolded fiancé Darryl "Rock" Paxton. The time is ripe for a career move, so when rowing buddy Rock wants to hire her to do some unorthodox snooping to help clear his name, Tess agrees. But there are lethal secrets hiding in the Charm City shadows. And Tess's own name could end up on the ever-expanding list of Baltimore dead.

4 out of 5 stars Pleased with first read.......2007-04-02

This is the first book of Ms. Lippman's I've read and I was extremely pleased. Her latest, "What the Dead Know," arrived in yesterday's mail. Need to set aside to read in one sitting. I know it is a cliche, but "Blues" did keep me up until 2AM. I'm looking forward to catching up on her other Tess Monaghan books later this year.

4 out of 5 stars A great start to the series!.......2007-02-08

I had never read any of the Tess Monaghan series before this one, and I'm glad I started in the right place.

I love the blend of humor and character development this book provides for the reader. While Tess is not my favorite female protagonist of all time, she quickly became one of the most interesting. I like her little habits: she buys a new journal each year, writes her goals for that year on the first page, then promptly puts the book away with all the other journals and never writes in it again. Heh. I can respect that. ;-)

I like the fact that Tess is a character who kind of stumbles along and often knows as little about the realities of her life and personal interactions as we do. In a way, the reader comes to understand her life and her personal relationships as Tess does. That might not seem like a huge thing, but it's kind of neat. Some characters--you are told a whole lot in paragraphs of character description. Not so with Tess, at least not for the most part. Rather, she has things revealed to her or she uncovers facts she'd never known, and you learn what her life is really like at the same time that she does. Hope that makes sense to you.

You'll like Tess and her circle of friends/family. Try this series out!

5 out of 5 stars Fun Read.......2006-11-08

You will like Tess. This is a witty and fast paced read that left me wanting to read the whole series.

4 out of 5 stars Really liked it..........2006-08-02

I have to admit, I have had a copy of Baltimore Blues for years, I kept trying to get into it and couldn't. Well, once again I picked it up and couldn't put it down. It is a well written mystery, I love Tess, hope she stays independent and keeps her unique characteristics. I am now reading the 3rd in the series and haven't found it a problem with reading out of order. Although you really should read the 1st one at least. I intend to read all of the Tess series a new favorite for me.

4 out of 5 stars An introduction.......2005-08-18

This is a great introduction to what promises to be a great series. Tess Monahan is an ex-reporter who was dumped from her job when the newspaper she was working for went under and she was made redundant. For two years she has struggled to make ends meet by working part time at her aunts' book shop, scratching at the irritation of her boredom by rowing, her exercise of choice. Her rowing buddy, Rock, asks her to follow his girl friend Ava, who is behaving strangely, and to find out whether or not she is seeing someone else. Ava has several meetings with notorious lawyer, Michael Abramowich and when the lawyer is murdered, the blame falls immediately on Rock. Tess now begins to raelise her true vocation and future livelihood is that of being an investigator for a legal firm, and embarks on an involved course of action to clear Rocks' name. There's plenty of action and many twists and turns in this novel and, of course, I can't wait to get the next in the series.

Book Description

From the brilliant author of The Long Ball comes an unforgettable account of the epic World Series clash between the celebrated Los Angeles Dodgers and the perennial underdog Baltimore Orioles. Nobody expected the Orioles to win; after all, by 1966, the Dodgers had replaced the Yankees as the dominant team in baseball, winning two of the previous three World Series. Few outside of Baltimore gave the Orioles more than a fighting chance. What transpired over four games astonished and mesmerized a nation in turmoil. Baltimores young pitchers shredded the veteran Dodgers lineup, setting Major League records along the way. Nobody had ever seen dominating pitching like this before: In the entire Series, the Dodgers scored only two runs and collected a mere 17 hits. Their team batting average was a lowly .142, andincrediblyfor the last 33 innings of the series, they were held scoreless.

2 out of 5 stars Poorly Researched Book.......2007-10-03

This book takes a wonderful story about major league baseball and a city and turns it into a minor league work. Adelman apparently never visited Baltimore, consulted a map or talked to anyone who was directly involved in the events he attempts to describe. He relies on second-hand sources and commits enough factual errors (Frank Robinson's Mother's Day home run off Luis Tiant, Baltimore as the capital of Maryland?, etc.)to be put into the DH role. If you are from Baltimore or have fond memories of the 1966 World Series, you'll want to read this book - but you'll be frustrated and angry once you do because the book is a slap at the intelligence of baseball fans everywhere.

THIS IS BOOK IS ABOUT THE 1966 WORLD SERIES, ORIOLES VS DODGERS. IT WAS A CLASSIC MATCHUP OF THE HOMERUN POWER OF BALTIMORE AND THE BEST PITCHING STAFF IN BASEBALL, LOS ANGELES. IT TURNED OUT TO BE A VERY LOW SCORING AND BORING SERIES, IF YOU DON'T LIKE PITCHING DUELS. THIS SERIES WAS A DREAM COME TRUE FOR FRANK ROBINSON AND THEIR VERY YOUNG PITCHING STAFF OF THE ORIOLES. IT ALSO MARKED THE LAST GAME SANDY KOUFAX WOULD EVER PITCH. THE BOOK COVERS IN DETAIL EACH GAME AND ALSO GIVES US MUCH INSIGHT INTO SUCH PLAYERS AS BOOG POWELL, THE DAVIS BOYS AND THE TRUE STAR OF THE SERIES, FRANK ROBINSON. THEIR ARE SOME MINOR ERRORS IN THE BOOK BUT IF OVERLOOKED, IT IS WELL WORTH READING. I SUGGEST IT FOR ALL ORIOLE AND NOSTALIGIC FANS.

3 out of 5 stars Where was the editor? The proofreader? Hmmm???.......2007-05-14

The subject of this book is one that resonates with me more than four decades later --- the year the O's finally broke through, launching 20 years of excellence.

That is why some of the factual errors are so annoying. Admittedly, most of you probably don't care that Frank Robinson's record-setting homer flew out of Memorial Stadium on May EIGHTH (rather than the 7th, as the author claims). However, it is important to me, for two reasons. One, you cannot change the calendar. And, two, I was there when it happened. (Also, F-Robby didn't homer on Luis Tiant's FIRST pitch. The count was 1-1.)

As some of you have stated, it is confusing for Oriole fans of that era if someone refers to "Robby", without clarifying which one ("B" or "F"). Frank was certainly better-known nationally, but, in Ballmer, "Robby" means "Brooks", and "F-Robby" means "Frank".

Finally --- come on --- Baltimore is NOT the capital of Maryland. (Annapolis is the capital. You know ... the city with the famous NAVAL ACADEMY?)

5 out of 5 stars Great Book.......2006-11-06

I bought this book for my husband and he loved it! He talked about it so much that I later purchased it again for my brother.

3 out of 5 stars Black and Blue, The Golden Arm, the Robinson Boys, and the 1966 World Series that Stunned America.......2006-09-18

The title is one mouthful. Being from Baltimore I was expecting a good read about my favorite baseball team and one I grew up watching and listening to. It is a shame the book was written by someone not at all familiar with Baltimore or one would assume baseball for that matter. Continually refering to "Jack Robinson" in the book instead of the name we all know him by as Jackie Robinson was an unbelievable gaff. Then calling Baltimore the capital of Maryland over and over again. Couple these with the other errors that pop out to anyone that lived through the 1966 season and lived in Baltimore and you gotta wonder about the research that actually went into this book and who was responsible at Little John for proofing it. One has to assume that the behind the scenes facts and the interviews were accurate but were they? I guess we will never know until someone writes another book about the 1966 season so that we can compare them. I enjoyed the book for the memories that it rekindled for me about the 1966 baseball season and the personalities on the Orioles team and those in Baltimore. The read for me was a nostalgic trip down memory lane for one that lived through it.
If you want to read a great Baltimore sports book, pick up a copy of Johnny U, The Life and Times of John Unitas by Tom Callahan. It will bring a tear to a true "Baltimoreon!"

    Book Description

In 1948, the Orioles, a Baltimore-based vocal group, recorded "It's Too Soon to Know." Combining the sound of Tin Pan Alley with gospel and blues sensibilities, the Orioles saw their first hit reach #13 on the pop charts, thus introducing the nation to vocal rhythm & blues and paving the way for the most successful groups of the 1950s.

In the first scholarly treatment of this influential musical genre, Stuart Goosman chronicles the Orioles's story and that of myriad other black vocal groups in the postwar period. A few, like the Orioles, Cardinals, and Swallows from Baltimore and the Clovers from Washington, D.C., established the popularity of vocal rhythm & blues nationally. Dozens of other well-known groups (and hundreds of unknown ones) across the country cut records and performed until about 1960. Record companies initially marketed this music as rhythm & blues; today, group harmony continues to resonate for some as "doo-wop."

Focusing in particular on Baltimore and Washington and drawing significantly from oral histories, Group Harmony details the emergence of vocal rhythm & blues groups from black urban neighborhoods. Group harmony was a source of empowerment for young singers, for it provided them with a means of expression and some aspect of control over their lives where there were limited alternatives. Through group harmony, young black males celebrated and musically confounded, when they could not overcome, complex issues of race, separatism, and assimilation during the postwar period.

Group harmony also became a significant resource for the popular music industry. Goosman interviews dozens of performers, deejays, and industry professionals to examine the entrepreneurial promise of midcentury popular music and chronicle the convergence of music, place, and business, including the business of records, radio, promotion, and song writing.

Featured in the book's account of the black urban roots of rhythm & blues are the recollections of singers from groups such as the Cardinals, Clovers, Dunbar Four, Four Bars of Rhythm, Five Blue Notes, Hi Fis, Plants, Swallows, and many others, including Jimmy McPhail, a well-known Washington vocalist; Deborah Chessler, the manager and songwriter for the original Orioles; Jesse Stone, the writer and arranger from Atlantic Records; Washington radio personality Jackson Lowe; and seminal black deejays Al ("Big Boy") Jefferson, Maurice ("Hot Rod") Hulbert, and Tex Gathings.

        Book Description

Although it was America's first public railroad, chartered in 1827, the Baltimore & Ohio did not enter the lucrative Philadelphia and New York City markets until the 1880s, long after its rivals, notably the Pennsylvania Railroad, had established themselves in the Northeast corridor. In order to compete, B & O executives realized they would need to create a railroad like no other, and in 1890 they launched the Royal Blue Line, offering premier passenger service between Washington, D.C., and New York City. Boasting the company's fastest locomotives (designed specifically for the line and featuring the country's first mainline passenger diesel engine), its most luxurious passenger cars (the first in the nation to be air-conditioned), and dining cars that served exquisite regional cuisine--as well as a motor coach service that took passengers from the line's New Jersey terminus into Manhattan, still fondly remembered by many as the most civilized way to enter the city--the Royal Blue Line was, as advertised, the "Finest Daylight Train Service in the World."

In Royal Blue Line, Herbert H. Harwood, Jr., recounts the 70-year history of the B & O's showcase service, detailing the creation of the "Royal Blue" image, the design of equipment and services appropriate to this image, the B & O's distinctive marketing campaigns, and its stubborn corporate pride in the line, which led to questionable business decisions and, ultimately, financial collapse. Generously illustrated with over 250 evocative photographs, advertisements, menus, timetables, and maps, Royal Blue Line vividly recalls America's most regal railway journey.

5 out of 5 stars Like fresh snow in an empty playground.......2005-01-13

The writing is deceptively simple and the reading is quick at first blush. However, the subject manner and the method of delivery allows the reader an opportunity to view the world in an entirely different way. It is a crushingly honest and ruthlessly leathal description of life, space, and the consequences of choices made and more importantly - not made. Haunting and powerfully real, I'll never think of Baltimore the same way again.

              5 out of 5 stars A life force.......2004-05-14

When I think about how some writers are, I wonder if they are pale and etiolated, if their words are a lacy veil over a sleepy continent of unconcern. With J Tyler Blue I have rather more the sense of facing a charging tiger, who hasn't eaten for several days. These stories are sun flares of passion. I think the expression down south is "makes you want to slap yo' momma."

              5 out of 5 stars Baltimore renaissance.......2004-05-13

I think Blue is one part of a Renaissance in arts around Baltimore...speaking for himself only, but perhaps unwittingly for a generation.

His prose is like an uncut diamond---rough edges, not "pure" but corrupted, like the narrator himself. A world-wise Eggers, perhaps? I don't know, that might not be an apt comparison.

I think with time this will be looked back upon as the first in ever-improving works by the author. Heartily recommended.

              5 out of 5 stars Tuesday Perfect.......2004-05-09

This kid has some range. From brute and violent and obscene to gentle and romantic, even delicate, Blue paints word pictures of raw human emotions and actions with about as true and direct a brush as possible. Some things whisper and beckon ghosts. Others caress and penetrate. Others wield sledgehammers and start fires. But nothing is ever dull or ordinary. Even the simplest things left out in Blue's prose are bathed in worldly, exquisite light.

Oddly accessible, and a quick read, this is simply Baltimore up and down: naked, honest, raw, and beautiful.

              5 out of 5 stars Windsinger's Quartet.......2001-08-30

The fourth of the books about Ki and Vandien - previously met in the Windsinger's Trilogy (Harpy's Flight, The Windsingers, The Limbreth Gate), which is now obviously a quartet.
If you have never read any of them and you like lots of fighting, plenty of blood, minimal plot, unbeatable musclebound heroes, and a story about as deep as a puddle, then don't bother with these. However - if you enjoy fantasy which is fresh and well-drawn, is packed full of interesting characters, creates a world that you will want to visit and explore, and has an outstanding and complex pair of heroes in Ki and Vandien - you will love Lindholm's work. Vandien is a fun-loving and surpisingly honorable rogue with an eye for a pretty girl and a penchant for getting himself into and out of trouble. He meets and ends up travelling with Ki, who appears to have no discernible sense of humour, doesn't trust anyone, can hold her own in any fight, and carries a secret even she isn't aware of.
If you love the books as much as I do you will be greatly disappointed that there are no further Ki & Vandien adventures. Lindholm now writes as Robin Hobb and her books under this name are so popular I doubt we'll end up with a Windsinger's Quintet.
For those who have shared the couple's previous adventures, this is a worthy addition to them - and we learn a great deal more about Vandien's fighting skills, sense of honour, and love for Ki. There is also a certain amount of softening in Ki's character - not only does she actually show that she cares for Vandien, but she has also developed a sense of humour! This addition to the series is, as in the other books, packed with plenty of humour, lots of action, and great characters - many of whom could star in their own trilogy or quartet. I loved it and found it a worthy addition to the others - but I would still like to know what happened to the Windsingers!

3 out of 5 stars Swordplay in and Exotic World.......2000-10-13

After fleeing the enmity of the Windsingers, Ki and Vandien agree to transport a despised and feared adolescent boy to live with a relative. Along the way, they become enmeshed in a conspiracy against a local tyrant. Luck of the Wheels is a very good adventure story. As in all of Lindholms' books which I've read, the reader is drawn into the characters' experience intensely, and we can't turn away from terror, anger, or even hate. Ki and Vandien continue to grow in their loving and tempestuous relationship.Readers of the Windsinger trilogy will definitely want to read this book as well. I was a bit disappointed that Ki and Vandien did not go on to challenge the Windsingers. I was also disappointed somewhat by the emphasis of the book. Lindholm paints a fascinating world, full of strange beings. For example, this book introduces us to the telepathic Jore. I wanted to know more about them. I wasn't all that interested in the fencing and swordplay, which there is plenty of in fantasy. Nevertheless, I am glad that this book is due to be re released in 2002, and I hope Lindholm someday will return to write more about Ki and Vandien.

4 out of 5 stars Luck is what you make of it.......2000-01-21

Book four of this series finds Ki and Vandien far to the South, trying to make a living as teamsters in unknown territory. Breaking their own rules, they take on passengers and find out more about this region than they wanted. If you liked the first tales of this egalitarian couple that started in the outstanding Harpy's Flight, you should enjoy this adventure. Characters are complex, alien races abound, conspiracies and oddities are everywhere, and Ki and Vaiden's relationship continues to change and grow. I only hope that the author, now writing as Robin Hobb, will one day return to the world of Ki and Vandien.

5 out of 5 stars A GREAT GIFT FOR THOSE YOU CARE ABOUT.......2007-08-03

I bought this book through a book club years ago. Then I bought the revised edition. I found that my family and friends would come over and ask to use it to find out about some disease or condition they have heard of. That's when it became the perfect gift. Large print for older adults. Best of all - IT'S EASY TO UNDERSTAND. It answers questions you may forget to ask your doctor. By no means is this an alternative to visiting your doctor, but it is a great way to educate yourself. It's also kind of fun to consult when you are watching your favorite crime dramas and the criminal has some fatal disease. Really great reference material.

Part of my hand became permanently numb. I found Merck manual narrowing the problem down to a few options. I knew which kind of doc I needed to see - a neurologist. I asked if he minded me telling him what I thought it was before he did... damaged ulner nerve! Yes! I had prepared myself for that possibility & understood the basics so we could quickly go from there. (I literally find myself reading this book for hours it's so interesting and has many diagrams).

But Careful, the paperback version I have is about 5 x 3.5 x 3 inches with tiny print. If you can swing it, get the larger paperbound version or hard cover.

                  Book Description

This book will change the way you cook and eat! In a perfect world everyone would have as much time as they wanted to prepare delicious meals for themselves and their loved ones. Unfortunately, at the end of a day's work most people don't have time to create a fine meal from scratch. This book will teach you how to make edible building blocks that will enable you to prepare sophisticated meals at a moment's notice. What are the building blocks? Succulent roasted tomatoes and peppers; luscious mushroom duxelles; sweet and meltingly soft onions, shallots, and leeks; creamy roasted garlic; rich chicken and vegetable stocks; and fragrant herbal marinades. The building blocks can be used right away, or kept frozen, ready at a moment's notice, your own mise en place. Think of them as sunshine in your freezer. The building blocks will allow you to turn a steaming bowl of soup, some pasta, and a chicken breast into a feast in short order.

Written for people who enjoy good, simple food with a Mediterranean accent, this book consists of two parts. The first part of the book focuses on how to prepare the edible building blocks. The second part of the book is filled with recipes designed to allow you to create fine meals from the building blocks. Quick, easy, and delicious, you will love the results.

5 out of 5 stars Great for using fresh produce from your garden!.......2006-10-19

I love this book. I'm an avid cook and have many wonderful cookbooks -- some fabulous classics and some innovatively new -- and this is one of my very favorite cookbooks. I've learned a lot from this book, as it utilizes a different approach than many cookbooks in its use of building blooks. The building blocks (which can be cooked ahead & frozen) for which the author gives instructions are tasty and versatile, and we have really enjoyed the recipes he provides for using the building blocks. We had a lot of veggies from our garden at the end of this summer, and this book helped me make the most of them. I found the book to be well-organized and easy to use. Note: when I contacted the author by email to let him know how much I've enjoyed his book, he responded and noted a correction on page 146: the recipe for basic frangipane requires one cup of nuts, not two cups as stated.

1 out of 5 stars Nothing new or interesting.......2006-03-03

Not well organized and uninspired. Any seasoned home cook will know these tips and tricks. Based on the reviews of praise I felt mislead. I would not recommend this book to any serious home cook.

                  4 out of 5 stars Beginner's Cookbook Delivers.......2005-08-30

If you're like me, you drool over visions of hot, steaming, flavorful 'real food' as you're pulling into the drive-through for the 4th time in a week and dejectedly bleat out "Yes, I'll have fries with that."
For me, 'food'when I was growing up meant Lucky CHarms out of the box in front of a "Three's Company" or "Laverne and Shirley" rerun. I bought this book looking for vegetable based (in other words, healthy/light)recipies that also made use of the 'freezer cooking' method. I have NO kitchen skills, so cooking an elaborate homemade meal is a challenge for me in all respects. If it's too complicated - I quit!
This book meets all my needs and I'm pretty happy with it. I think the secret here is that there really is no magic secret to cooking - just most of us don't have this sort of home-economics knowledge anymore of how to select vegetables, prepare them for multiple uses later, and freeze them. This book delivers all that and more - nice, basic recipes that aren't drenched in mayo, cheese, and ground beef like you find in all the other freezer cookbooks. 'Mediterranean-inspired' - is a selling point here - the flavors are upscale but not pretensious, great for people who want to cook healthy meals every day for their families. A good tool to help get out of the fast food lines. Stocking your freezer with the prepared 'basics' does help, as promised, make you feel like a chef!

5 out of 5 stars What a terrific set of tasty recipes!.......2004-03-10

I love "There's A chef In Your Freezer." It has really changed the way I cook. I'm a working mother and I really appreciate how the book helps me prepare delicious meals quickly. I don't know how I ever lived without roasted garlic in my freezer before -- it adds so much flavor to food. I use it sometimes to jazz up store-bought food and frozen vegetables. The roasted garlic and marinades are my favorite recipes in the book. I use the marinades all the time. They are very easy to make and add so much flavor.

I find myself making roasted vegetables and potatoes often; roasted chicken parts are delicious with the rosemary thyme marinade. Even the children love them. The caramel chocolate sauce is to die for and easy to prepare.

I appreciate all the humor in the book as well, and I find the recipes are clear and easy-to-follow. I highly recommend this book to anyone who likes to cook. For those who have time to cook, they'll find it's full of recipes that sound delicious.

                  2 out of 5 stars A Dissappointment.......2003-03-08

Based on the other reviews, I'd expected something really special. There's nothing wrong with the recipes and techniques in this book, but I learned nothing new. I already keep frozen mushrooms, herbs, onions, and peppers on hand. And the recipes for using those ingredients were fine, but again - nothing new. This would be a fine cookbook for a person who is just learning to freeze, or whose repetoire needs expanding. For the experienced cook - NOTHING NEW.
