Book Description
The classic depiction of the harsh realities of American life, the dark side of the American Dream, and one man's doomed pursuit of love and success...
"Mr. Dreiser is not imitative and belongs to no school. He is at heart a mysticist and a fatalist, though using the realistic method. He is, on the evidence of this novel alone, a power."-The New York Times Book Review
Download Description
"Theodore Dreiser's An American Tragedy (1925) is nothing less than what it purports to be -- the harrowing story of a weak-willed young man who destroys himself, a villain who is also victim of the values of a deceptive, materialistic society. Dreiser patterned the story of Clyde Griffiths on a real-life murder that took place in 1906, a charming young social climber who killed his pregnant young girlfriend in order to romance a rich girl who had begun to notice him. A powerful murder story, An American Tragedy is much more than that. For Dreiser pours his own dark yearnings into the character of Clyde Griffiths, while grimly charting the young man's pitiful rise and fall as he pursues empty ambitions to wealth, power and satisfaction. The Indiana-born novelist Theodore Dreiser (1871-1945) has never been a dashing or romantic figure in American literature, and he has no Pulitzer or Nobel Prize to signal his importance. His big, rugged novels were shocking in their day -- unapologetic in their sexual candor, antagonistic to the norms of conventional morality and organized religion, often banned or suppressed -- and challenging still to readers. Yet the brooding force of his writing casts a deep shadow across modern American letters. At his best, in An American Tragedy, Dreiser examines the flip side of The American Dream in a gathering storm of a story that develops with a power echoing Dostoevsky in Crime and Punishment. Inspired by the novels of Balzac and the ideas of Spenser and Freud, Dreiser became one of America's greatest naturalist writers, and An American Tragedy retains its rocky intensity and its devastating view of American longing almost a century later. PONDEROUS.......2007-09-24
Wow, what a ponderous read! I know this was the era of yellow journalism and sensationalistic literature, but OMIGOD, this could've been reduced to 1/3 its length with the removal of superfluous adjectives!
Outstanding.......2007-01-15
This is the ultimate "be careful what you wish for" novel as Clyde Griffiths, trapped in a detested situation of his own making, concludes that his only path out involves murder; but when he can't go through with it in a final demonstration of his "weakness," his intended victim dies anyway by accident - only to bring down upon Clyde a conviction for "murder" and a reservation with the electric chair. Clyde's dream is the classic American one of rising above one's lowly position to a higher status, but he is frustrated at every turn. He takes a mistress, the poor factory girl Roberta Alden, at about the same time he befriends rich society girl Sondra Finchley; he learns that Roberta is pregnant just as Sondra declares her love for him. He feels trapped with Roberta with no way out, until he schemes to take her to an isolated lake and drown her. In one of the most famous scenes in American literature, Clyde is unable to complete his plans while in the boat with Roberta - only she somehow falls overboard and drowns anyway. Clyde is frozen by the spectacle of her drowning and is unable to act. A long trial ensues in which perhaps the real American tragedy is revealed: Sondra's wealth protects her from ever having to get involved with Clyde's proceedings. This long novel (perhaps too long) is fascinating in so many ways, with the ironies behind Clyde's hopes, dreams, actions, and fate so dramatically and honestly detailed by Dreiser, that, as one critic said, it's "a great work worthy of a permanent place in any list of milestones of modern fiction."
As with all Library of America editions, this edition of Dreiser's masterpiece is definitive and constructed to last a lifetime.
A Good Book to Snuggle With for A Great and Long Reading [88][16][T].......2007-01-12
Before the advent of television or other amenities which distract one from the often requisite silence to snuggle down to a novel, books included extraordinary detail and covered entire lives of protagonists. Dickens, Fielding, Dostoevsky, and others of their respective generations could swaddle the reader with incredibly well versed novels of lengths which today's readers may find either offensive or oppressive.
Dreiser belongs with such a crowd. In this novel, we commence with little boy Clyde Griffiths and read about him until he becomes the gas-chambered Griffiths. We learn all about his love of women, love of money, and how those two loves collide with his Judeo-Christian instincts - leading to the devastation of his and his friends' lives.
Engrossing and beautifully written, this book enraptures the reader who loves to read and reads out of love. Griffiths' life bestows weaknesses similar to modern cinema's Ned Racine (William Hurt in Body Heat) or Frank Chambers (John Garfield in Postman Always Rings Twice). Women: can't live with them, can't live without them.
If your attention span is guided by television's addicting ADHD-like compressed "mini-series" quickness, and only fast paced composition can keep your attention, this book is not for you. If you wish to snuggle beneath a blanket during the winter or bath beneath the sun's rays in the summer "with a good book" that could last the entire vacation, this would be a very good choice.
Human nature doesn't change.......2006-10-23
It's very rare that I will read a book strictly on the strength of the author's name. Theodore Dreiser's works captivate me with the same intensity that Anne Rice and J.K. Rowling elicit in their own legion of admirers. For me, Dreiser has yet to disappoint: "Sister Carrie", "Jennie Gerhardt", "The Genius", and "American Tragedy" never fail to evoke strong identification with the main characters.
I won't go into the plot of "American Tragedy" here: read other reviews if you're looking for spoilers. What I will say is that it's one of Dreiser's finest achievements. He never merely tells the story of one protagonist struggling against the odds to win the money, the girl, salvation, whatever the issue at stake is. He also holds the society that the character lives in up to scrutiny, shining a harsh light on prejudices, unfair mores, and inconsistent applications of justice.
The tragic drama of Clyde Griffiths and Roberta Alden, although set in the 1920s, could have transpired just as easily in modern times. Premarital sex, waning passion, the destruction of one former love to facilitate access to another deemed more desirable: these dark themes are prevalent today as well. Society may change, but human nature doesn't, and in focusing his work on the intricacies and cruelties of human nature, Dreiser has created a timeless book.
In my opinion, Dreiser has never had an equal, nor a successor.
One of the great American novels........2006-10-20
An American Tragedy is a lengthy novel, this addition at just under 900 pages, but it's a rewarding mental and emotional experience. It read quickly for me - I had trouble putting it down once I pushed past the first couple hundred pages. Dreiser's novel follows the life of Clyde Griffiths, an ambitious young man in pursuit of the American dream. It is a life of struggles, first to overcome his birth and gain social and material status, then for his own life, sold in the process of the first. The author deals with deftly with powerful and confusing emotions - lust, love, greed, shame - presenting in Clyde a sympathetic and interesting character, victim or villain. In such, Dreiser purposefully and effectively seeks out some of the dark underbelly of American culture and society's drive for status and success. Perhaps the tragedy is that the story begins and ends in much the same way. The life of Clyde Griffiths is forgotten, swept away in the heavy rush of mass and progress. Dreiser's novel, on the other hand, will not be forgotten. It's certainly one of the great American novels, well worth the read.

Product Description
Based on a real-life story, An American Tragedy takes us into the life of Clyde Griffiths an apathetic man, totally lacking in character. Brought up in poverty, he murders his pregnant girlfriend to marry a woman who will bring him into the world of riches and social recognition he has always yearned for. This is the classic depiction of the harsh realities of American life, the dark side of the American Dream, and one man's doomed pursuit of love and success, it is a portrayal of one of the darker phases of the American character, it demands attention.

Theodore Dreiser's significance in the history of American letters is no longer a matter for dispute. We may continue to debate his merits as an artist but his importance to American literature has been well established. Dreiser was the writer who by himself cleared the wilderness of Puritan denial.

I LOVE THIS BOOK!!!.......2005-08-04
It's been a long time since I read this book, but it has never left me. I was so impressed by it that I keep recommending it to people to read.
I think it has one of the most wonderful and intriguing beginnings:
It is said-and it is true-that just before we are born,a cavern angel holds his finger to our mouths and whispers, "Hush! Don't tell what you know."
This is why we have a cleft on our upper lips and remember nothing of where we came from.
Towards the end of the last century-in 1978, to be precise-a smooth-lipped boy appeared in the world.
Doesn't that totally make you want to read it??? ;-)
Favorite of Three Generations.......2004-11-12
My mom and I absolutely loved this book when I was a kid, and I'm now introducing it to my son. What a treat to revisit this story and to share it among three generations!
One of the best books I have ever read!.......2004-06-08
Bentley Ellicott embodies the soul of the child, wanting at the same time to grow up and remain young forever. He has an impossible task ahead of him from square one in his life and he's known it since before he traveled the birth canal to join this mortal coil! I have read the book over 10 times since I found it in 1984, and I never grow tired of it. Every character is so special--from Polly to the misguided Mrs. Tally, to Bentley and Slally, the rememberer. I don't understand why Roderick MacLeish didn't write hundreds of books--I was so disappointed to find that there are basically only two or three. However, even if Prince Ombra were the only one MacLeish ever wrote, he spoke VOLUMES to our hearts as readers and humans. Don't miss this book--keep a copy on your book shelves, give it to your friends AND your enemies. You'll be doing the greatest mitzvah of all--teaching people to love each other, even when all the odds tell you NOT TO. Peace. . .
Unbelievably Good and Under-Advertised.......2004-05-28
While some ads have likened this book to a cross between J.R.R. Tolkien, H.P. Lovecraft and Piers Anthony I found it to be closer to Ray Bradbury and some Stephen King.
Good and Evil have fought many times. Sometimes Good has won and sometimes Evil has. The time is fast approaching for the one-thousandth battle. A young boy will be the champion for Good. He remembers all that has occurred in these battles of the past. To prepare for his own battle he will have to find a teacher. Then he will have to steel himself to face the champion of Evil which will take the form of that which he fears the most.
As this secret war develops in a small American town we are given small glimpses of how the town, and the world in general, are being affected by the struggle. Eventually the final conflict occurs. I will not say how the battle goes or what the representative of Evil is, you'll just have to read it.
PRINCE OMBRA, while being a tale of Good vs. Evil, is also an interesting look into history. The book makes some very interesting points, including the true nature of Arthur and Excalibur. I have recommended this book to quite a number of people over the years and all who took my advice enjoyed it. It truly is one of the superior fantasy novels.
Ssslllloooowwww.......2004-05-17
This book was a little slow for me at times, or boring. I must confess, I never finished it. But when I read a book I don't like I always seem to remember all the parts that I DID like. Some fave details were the 'philtrum' myth. You know that little thing above you lip and below your nose? Well you supposedly get it before birth when an angel presses her finger there and says 'shh' to keep you from telling the secrets of the world. Bently doesn't have one. One of my fave characters was Slally, the girl who talked in gibberish. Well, Bently UNDERSTOOD her gibberish. I never finshed the book but near the end I saw a sentence that added suspense to the book. I won't tell you what it is though. :) But I've seen good reviews for this book. Some like it, I didn't. Whether or not you like this book depends on your taste in style of writing. So it could be your fave food or that yucky stuff that Mom insists that you'll love and 'eat it up now you'll thank me later.'

Worth Your TIme and Money.......2007-08-23
Dr. Emmons explains depression and anxiety disorders in terms anyone can understand. This book was laid out well and provided the reader with great information on the chemical responses to stress or depression, prescription information, and alternative treatments. Whether you suffer from depression or not, this book is a must read for anyone looking to improve their quality of life.
Very Helpful.......2007-04-06
I see Dr. Emmons as a regular patient. He is a gifted doctor and healer. His book goes on to further demonstrate his ability to combine western medicine with eastern logic only to achieve amazing results.
A Saving Grace - a must read for any one who suffers from depression/anxiety.......2007-02-28
This is a fantastic book. For anyone who has every experienced the "prisoner in you own mind" feelings that come with anxiety, this book really lends a helping hand. Like the other reviewers mentioned, it is well written and concise...but perhaps most of all, it gives you some very empowering tools amid an otherwise desperately helpless-feeling time.
Amazing Book!!!.......2006-12-22
Anyone looking to improve their lives should definetly take a look at this stuff. This book literally changed my life. Whether you suffer from mild or severe depression, the small suggestions offered in this book are priceless and very easy to follow (plus, they're fun to try).
I've spent years battling severe depression. I dropped out of college for a year, and recently ended up in the hospital with suicidal thoughts. I'm not sure if I would be here if I hadn't accidentally picked up this book. It was refreshing to find so many extra steps that I can take to improving my lifestyle, other than just medications and therapy. The book is easy to read and fascinating. Since reading this book, I've meditated daily and even sought out an ayurvedic practicioner to help me (something I would have considered "quack" science before).
These practices have kept me on track in graduate school, and many people have told me I look better than I ever have (I'd bet everything that it has to do with my better diet and meditation practices). The book was just a start, but it's the only book I've ever seen that allows that kind of start. I've read extensively on depression, and I've never learned more than I learned in one little book.
Most of all, I feel better than I've felt since I was 16 (before the depression). This book has opened new doors for me and I feel well enough to take them all!!!
Wonderful! Not all depressions are created equal..........2006-11-08
At last! A doctor that differentiates between different types of depression...
Most doctors rate depression according to its severity. They may state that you are experiencing a major depressive episode or a mild depressive episode, or perhaps you have seasonal affective disorder (SAD).
Dr Henry Emmons has a different approach. He classifies depression as follows:
Anxious Depression
Agitated Depression
Sluggish Depression
This is a potential break-through in diagnosis and the possibilities it offers for treatment. According to Emmons you may be a combination of the above three types but most likely show a preference to one type or another.
More significantly, each type of depression is attributed to an excess or deficit of chemicals (neurotransmitters) in the brain. Many people will already know that low levels of serotonin, otherwise known as the happiness brain chemical, can lead to depression and disrupted sleep patterns. However Emmons suggests that dopamine and norepinephrine also have a role in depression. This is not entirely new, however the attribution of specific types of depressions and tailored treatment is new.
Anxious Depression is characterised by low levels of serotonin and feelings of inadequacy and excessive worry, together with insomnia and potential carbohydrate cravings.
Agitated Depression is said to result from an excess of dopamine and norepinephrine resulting in restlessness, anger, irritability and digestive problems.
Sluggish Depression is characterised by increased sleep, withdrawal and passivity due to low levels of dopamine and norepinephrine.
In Emmons' book The Chemistry of Joy he suggests eating plans for each type of depression, together with generalised recommendations for vitamin supplementation. Most of the information on vitamin supplementation will be familiar and include the usual mainstays, such as B complex, folic acid, omega 6 (fish oil) and the like.
Interestingly Emmons speculates that Selective Serotonin Reuptake Inhibitors (SSRIs), which are commonly prescribed for depression, are not effective long term. This contradicts accepted wisdom, however his reasoning is sound. He hypothesizes that SSRIs simply manipulate existing stores of serotonin and do not help create new sources of serotonin. Accordingly, if an individual has difficulty manufacturing serotonin then over time the existing stores will be depleted as the SSRIs can not stop re-uptake indefinitely. It's an interesting theory. I couldn't find any source for this from published research and it appears to be based on Emmons' observations of his patients but I think the theory has merit.
Emmons favours a combination of lifestyle changes and supplements to treat depression. He does not rule out medication but seems to prefer a diet rich in tryptophan (the precursor to serotonin) together with 5-HTP. If you have a deficit of dopamine and norepinephrine then dopamine/norepinephrine enhancing foods and supplements are recommended.
Although the dietary information is good I am concerned that some people may opt to stop their pills in favour of the diet. Please don't stop your medications without supervision from your doctor!!!
Emmons' book also recommends `Mindfulness Mediation' and making lifestyle changes according to your Ayurvedic body type, a philosophy made popular by Deepak Chopra in several books including Perfect Health.
The final step proposed by Dr Emmons is the daily use of Mindfulness Meditation. In his discourse on the benefits of Mindfulness, Emmons claims that in as little as 5 minutes a day, 5 days a week you can feel calmer, sleep better and get on better with your family and workmates. I couldn't wait to put it to the test!
Emmons uses Jon Kabat-Zinn's definition of mindfulness which he describes as:
"awareness from moment to moment, on purpose, without judgement"
He also suggests that we give up on self-improvement and instead focus on accepting ourselves and loving ourselves, as we are, complete with faults. Instead of trying to fix ourselves Emmons suggests that we will find happiness in self-acceptance. An interesting concept. My own take on it is that self-improvement IS essential. After all, mindfulness and self-acceptance involves learning new skills and changing the way we think. These are simply self-improvement tools. I don't see how one can be separated from the other.
On the subject of the practise of meditation Emmons makes some good points. He advises that you may not always feel restful and relaxed when you meditate. Also that sitting meditation (which is usually the first type of meditation that most of us are taught), is one of the most challenging forms of meditation. That's good news for me - I have to confess there are days I can not sit still to meditate. Instead I enjoy meditating while moving. Most people are led to believe that seated meditation is the ONLY type of meditation. This is not true - you can benefit from a variety of forms of mindfulness meditation.
I find meditating while dancing or walking is easy. Meditating while stuck in one spot makes me want to wriggle and squirm. Oh, and the itches and the aches and pains that I swear I feel when I am confined to a chair!
This is Emmons' own account of meditation:
"I can testify from my own experience that sometimes you'll feel deeply relaxed, and other times you'll be so restless you wonder why anyone bothers with this annoying practice. Sometimes when I meditate I feel real contentment; other times, I feel bored; still other times, I ache with the pain of difficult emotions, troubling memories, or just a diffuse grief that seems to have no source."
Regular mindfulness meditation has not cured my insomnia or magically improved my relations with friends and family but I do feel calmer and more positive and my coping skills have improved. It definitely works, although perhaps not quite as well as Dr Emmons suggests.
The Chemistry of Joy by Dr Henry Emmons is an excellent book - 5 stars - and a wonderful resource for anyone looking to combine Eastern and Western philosophies and make lifestyle changes to reduce or eliminate depression and anxiety.
Book Description
While home freezers were almost unheard of before the 1930s, they are now a common appliance in North American households. In fact, some 3 million freezers are sold each year.
What accounts for their popularity? Simply that freezing is the easiest, most natural way to preserve food -- whether it's fresh summer produce saved for enjoyment in winter or prepared meals that can be easily thawed and reheated when needed. Freezing also provides a number of economic benefits, allowing consumers to buy food in quantity at the best prices.
What many people don't realize, however, is that some foods are more successfully frozen than others. And of those foods that do freeze well, using the proper techniques can make a big difference in their flavor and texture. That's why just about anyone who owns a freezer needs
The Best Freezer Cookbook.
Here you'll find comprehensive reference to the various techniques for freezing fruits, vegetables, meats, poultry, fish and seafood. In addition, the book provides over 100 recipes -- including appetizers, soups, main meals, side dishes and desserts -- all specially selected to give the best possible results when frozen. Each section is designed to help you get the maximum benefit from your freezer, with helpful suggestions for easy entertaining, meal planning, simple heat-and-eat dishes for busy weeknights, and freezing baked goods. And, of course, no freezer cookbook would be complete without recipes for homemade ice cream!
The perfect book for everyone who wants the best from their freezer.
Customer Reviews:
Look elsewhere.......2005-08-16
Where to begin? Her Muffeletta - an olive-based sandwich -- had NO OLIVES in it.
These are not recipes adapted specifically for the freezer, they are compiled from various other authors and adapted to this book. Not necessarily a bad idea, but it was in this case.
The book is also sprinkled with recipes that can't be frozen! They have fun comments like this one for Salad Nicoise: "Freezer Tip: It would be great if you could freeze a salad and have it ready to go at a moment's notice. Unfortunately..."
The real problem with this book is that it gave me no insight. If you happen to like things like "Hawaiiwan Tuna Wraps" (with cream cheese, pineapple, and sunflower seeds) or very basic recipes like "lazy lasagna" that isn't really lasagna, you might like it. I was hoping for some insight about how to really adapt the freezer with my own recipes. While the book does offer a list of foods that don't freeze well and tips on freezing individual ingredients (which is why I won't just throw it away), the mission was not accomplished.
Excellent Recipes!.......2003-03-23
I used this book along with the 30-Day Gourmet and Frozen Assets book for my first freezer cooking adventure. This one has the BEST recipes- can't go wrong! It is not formatted for bulk cooking though, so I used the 30-Day Gourmet book's format (which is excellent!)and some of its recipes AND information and some recipes from Frozen Assets for my adventure. I am very pleased and am going to cook more and more of the recipes from the Best Freezer Cookbook. Make sure you try the Best Meatloaf (or whatever the name is) recipe!!! I used it for loaves and balls and have served them with sauces found in the 30-Day book to our delight every time!
Very busy freezer book.................2001-09-30
A lot of the recipes were good but had a lot of ingredients and alot of stuff I would never freeze any how. If you are looking for freezer book I would use the Ball Book of canning, freezing and dehydration. Mostly I freeze what ever is left over in garden and don't spend tons of time making stuff for my freezer but if that is what you are looking for this will do.
