Agatha Raisin, the crusty, yet perversely self-conscious Londoner who has resettled in the ostensible calm of a Cotswold village stars in her seventh adventure by M.C. Beaton. In this episode, Agatha has agreed to come out of retirement to manage the publicity for the launch of water bottled from a village spring--much to the chagrin of some of her neighbors. Worried that the commodification of at least part of the village's charm might wreak havoc on their peaceful existence, some of the community try to stop it once and for all. Still, killing off a member of the village council and leaving the corpse in the spring itself seems a little extreme, especially as it makes Agatha's paying job a bit more difficult. Believing that a dead body might destroy the chances for a successful campaign to market her product, Agatha begins an investigation into who might have wanted the victim dead.
Agatha Raisin continues to be an engaging and slightly puzzling heroine in The Wellspring of Death. She careens around the Cotswolds asking impertinent questions regarding the personal lives of her neighbors, all the while wondering why so many of them are unpleasant to her. She manages to muddle her own romantic affairs to such an extent that she finds herself in bed with her young and handsome employer--to the dismay of her former fiancée. Yet, in spite of all this, she engages in the occasional humorous assessment of what life among charming façades and lovely vistas is really like (crowded shopping in too small stores) and has a peculiarly British obsession with class and accent. There is much to appreciate here and little that is daunting or dismal. --K.A. Crouch
Book Description
This time, the feisty sleuth stumbles upon the victim of an unnatural death in Cotswold village's famous natural spring. Who was the unlucky corpse? The Ancombe Parish Council chairman-and the only uncommitted member voting on whether to allow the Ancombe Water Company to tap into the town's spring. Add ex-fiance James, watery politicians, and slippery entrepreneurs to the mix, and you have Agatha up to her neck in a murky murder mystery.

Agatha Drinks from the Fountain of Youth, Adds a Toy Boy, and Explores New Facial Treatments.......2007-07-19
At the end of Agatha Raisin and the Terrible Tourist, Agatha realizes that James Lacey is probably not going to become her husband in this lifetime. That realization leaves her feeling flat and depressed. When her former assistant, Roy Silver, calls to offer a job doing PR for a local water company, she's mildly interested. That flicker of intrigue is soon fanned into a bonfire when a trip to the water company's source causes Agatha to find the dead body of Mr. Robert Struthers, chairman of the Ancombe Parish Council, a group that was about to hold a key vote on allowing the new water company to use the spring. What better way to sleuth than to have the chance to use PR as a cover?
Agatha is soon attracted to one of the owners of the new company, Guy Freemont, who is "tall and slim, with jet-black hair and very blue eyes, a tanned skin and an athlete's body." Guy takes her out and they end up spending the night. This becomes a routine that keeps Agatha worrying about her appearance while others tell her she's making a fool of herself.
Agatha's suspicions soon focus on the parish council, whose members are a particularly nasty and unfriendly lot. Motives and bad behavior abound. James Lacey chooses to investigate without Agatha and turns up even more motives for murder.
One of the hilarious events of the book builds around Agatha trying to make a local fete into a large PR event, as circumstances and villains conspire against her.
The resolution of the mystery includes some good drama that will delight Agatha's fans.
I found that the reduced emphasis on James Lacey in this book gave this series a new shot of adrenaline and brought back the awkwardness and earnestness of Agatha Raisin into center stage where she reigns so well.
Not my cup of tea.......2006-07-04
The mystery itself was fine, but Agatha really grated on my nerves. I understand she's self conscious sometimes, but she overcompensates by lashing out and being rude to people who didn't even provoke her. And what in the world does she see in James Lacey? (and vice versa, what does he see in her?) They are suspicious of each other, insult each other, yet it's supposed to be a love story. I didn't get it.
I prefer M.C. Beaton's Hamish MacBeth series instead.
Another great Agatha tale........2005-11-17
In the Wellspring of Death, Agatha and James investigate separately, only coming together now and again for the usual misunderstandings and lack of communication regarding their relationship. I don't mind the on-and-off nature of their "love",it makes the stories interesting. Agatha may be insecure, but she's sure enough of herself to love a man who at least is intelligent, mature, handsome, etc. She could do a lot worse than James Lacey, though I prefer Sir Charles, myself.
Agatha Raisin is not promiscuous. In fact, she suffers marked guilt each time she has sex with any man besides her "true" love, James Lacey. But come on, give the woman a break! She's come a long way from her crappy beginnings. Doesn't she deserve a little fun? Agatha is a bright, go-getter with a soft heart beneath the rough exterior, and I cherish the character for both her realism, and her strength of spirit.
Who Wants to Buy This Water?.......2003-07-02
In this 7th book in the Agatha Raisin series, Agatha is asked to come out of retirement to help a local firm promote its spring water, bottled from a historic village spring. The parish council members are divided on whether to agree to the deal, and one of the members soon turns up dead...in the spring! Agatha must put a spin on this P.R. disaster, and in the process once again steps in to blunder her way to solving the case.
The Agatha Raisin series is one of my favorite cozy mystery series on the market, and I have enjoyed the character development of Agatha throughout the series. I like that Agatha was able to use some of her P.R. skills in this book, and the fact that the premise to the case was fresh and interesting. After reading several books in the series I began to wonder how Ms. Beaton would develop new cases for Agatha since it would be odd to have a village where everyone went around killing one another. (Who would want to live there?) However, I think that each case Agatha stumbles across (she always happens to be in the wrong place at the wrong time!) is entertaining and somewhat believable. Agatha is a rich character that is not at all what she seems on the outside, and I believe that it takes several books to get to know the true goodness of this character. If you enjoy cozy mysteries, you will find that this series is a humorous delight.
The first book in the series is "Agatha Raisin and the Quiche of Death". Enjoy!
Quite The Title!!.......2003-02-16
This is a good Agatha Raisin story. I found myself enjoying it immensely. Of course it helped that James Lacey was not in it as much as he is in some of the other stories. I don't like him and I wish Agatha would forget him and get on with her own life. Agatha's a mix of city sophisitication and small town vulnerability and that is what makes her so appealing.
In this book Agatha is working freelance on public relations for a new spring water company in a neighbouring village. The commercialization of the spring has opened up a Pandora's box of bad feelings in the village and results in two murders (in true Agatha fashion). In this one though we see a mosltly solo Agatha working on solving the mystery. At the very end she is joined by her village friends to unmask the killer.

Great for dragon lovers of all ages!.......2003-12-11
A truly indispensable tome if you are going to be picking out a pet dragon. Wonderfully illustrated and very informative. Another big favorite around here. If your child has dragon fever you simply must have this book!
How to Choose Your Dragon.......2003-06-08
Excelant, it made me want a dragon. This book was worth the money. The dragons are written about like breeds of cats or dogs.
If you can't get a pet but have a good amagination this is the guide for you.
Great Read Aloud.......2000-06-20
I am an elementary school librarian and always feel very lucky when I find a book like this. I like that it is not a story book. I get tired of reading stories, so do the kids. Second through fifth graders love this book. The first time I read it to a class I don't know who laughed the loudest, me or the students. They especially liked Sparky and what happens when he sneezes. I enjoyed the Dweeb myself. It is a refreshing twist on dragon stories.
Cute........1998-07-20
This was a good book even though I am a little too old for these kinds of books, i had fun reading it and looking at the differ. kinds of dragons in the back of the book. I liked the Nidget the best. My friends and i had fun picking wich ones we liked the best and naming them. (dont tell the boys that though). This was a good book.
A dragon as a pet? You bet!.......1996-08-08
The husband-and-wife Lindahn team have produced another colorful, fun book. This one is a little more of a story book than The Secret Lives of Cats: In it, Melissa, a twelve-year-old whose uncle owns a pet shop, gets the assignment of test-driving the new shipment of dragons. Melissa's report shows that there are dozens of species to choose from, including some very large Thumpers and some very tiny Nidgets. The illustrations are detailed, super realistic, and just plain funny, and Melissa's earnest (and sometimes exasperated) report on what each type of dragons demands is nice, too. A great gift for dragon fanciers or fantasy lovers

Penelope Leach's Your Baby & Child has been a beloved favorite for years. With this new, revised edition, Leach has updated her information and approach to reflect new findings in the field of child development, and to respond to the changing needs of today's families. Leach has utter respect for children and their parents; she explains development, child care, and parenting concerns clearly and without condescension.
Each developmental stage--newborn, settled baby, older baby, toddler, and young child--is discussed in terms of feeding, teeth and teething, growing, excreting, crying, sleeping, playing, and everyday care. For each stage, an additional set of appropriate topics is discussed, including muscle power, speech, child care, and appropriate toys. Colorful and expressive photos display infant, childhood, and toddler behavior. With her common-sense, child-positive approach, Leach carefully dispels negative parenting attitudes, and teaches readers how to stop, listen, and learn from their children. --Ericka Lutz

Better Guide Than Your Mom.......2007-08-12
This book is a wonderful source for everything about newborns and their care. The British author has a non-judgemental tone and is very reassuring. I used this book daily when my children were little. There are great ideas for easy toys and "secret weapons" to use as the kids get older. Your Baby and Child is a wonderful baby present to give. I know you will enjoy the book and it will become your most important and favorite guide. Now try to get some sleep new parents! Good luck.
Don't worry too much.......2007-05-25
I came across this book while listing other books and decided to read it since my husband and I just became new parents 18 months ago. Nowadays, most medias focus on breastfeeding, autism, congenital deformity and etc. Making new parents worry too much about their babies might have something wrong. This book relieves that worry. It's not abnormal your baby still crawling on the floor after 12 months or doesn't use cup yet. Parenting is a hard work but shouldn't be a stressful one. Do what you can and trust you instincts but not to wear yourself out. Kids should have happy parents not frustrated ones. I think this book as least give parents that. Your Baby & Child.......2007-03-17
This book has a lot of valuable and common sense advice for every imaginable facet of a young child. There is not a lot of technical "stuff" so the reading is smooth.
Still a wonderful resource........2007-03-10
I purchased this book the first time 27 years ago. I used it as a resource over and over. I loaned it to young woman who was expecting, and she kept it, so I had to get another one. This purchase went to my niece and her husband who just was expecting at the time. The book gave her great insite, and she still refers to it frequently. She says it's the best of all her baby books. (Her baby is 2 months old now). I recommend for any expectant parent or as a refresher for a Grandparent.
A Baby Bible.......2007-03-08
The very best baby book for someone who doesn't have a clue.

Phenomenal!.......2007-05-13
I would tell anyone with a fussy baby to read this book. From cover to cover Dr. Sears nailed the definition of a "high-needs" baby. I felt as if he wrote the book about me and my baby. It was so encouraging to know that there wasn't anything "wrong" with my baby or with the feelings I had about her being so fussy-which is a big deal to parents of a high-needs child; most people just don't "get it". I still (my baby is now 9 months) pull this book out when we are going through a rough patch; it's very reasurring to me and reminds me that I am doing the right things for my baby.
The Opposite of Reassuring.......2007-04-21
My daughter was "colicky" for exactly 4 months and 9 days. Yes, you may not believe it when people say stuff like that, but it literally disappeared overnight. During these 4 months I was tired, stressed out, and confused as to why she was so unhappy all of the time.
Unfortunately, "The Fussy Baby Book" was the first book I read to try and find some answers and help. I couldn't even finish the book because by three-quarters of the way through I felt so guilty that my instincts seemed to differ so much from what the Sears' were describing. I needed a book that would tell me that this was just a phase that would eventually pass and I would get through it a stronger person, but instead I was told that my "high needs" baby was always going to be this way and I better learn to deal with it. Talk about a feeling of hopelessness!
There is a lot of good information in the book as well, which is why I gave it 3 stars, but most of that information I found during internet searches before I ever bought the book anyway. The overall feelings of guilt and hopelessness that I got from this book stuck with me a lot longer than any of it's good information did.
If you read this book and do not find it to be the answer, please be sure to check out these books:
1) "Your Fussy Baby" by Marc Weissbluth (Scattered writing, repeats himself a lot, and not so good as a reference, but he's really onto something with his sleep research and it will probably make you feel better about your overall situation because you will probably be able to relate to a lot of what he says - and a big point he makes is IT'S NOT YOUR FAULT AND THIS WILL END, which is definitely what I needed to hear after reading "The Fussy Baby Book"!)
2) "The Happiest Baby on the Block" by Harvey Karp (I rented the DVD, which is probably the better way to go since you can actually watch him using his techniques. They really are amazing and although they don't always work with a colicky newborn unless you practice A LOT, the basics are good and we still use some of them to this day - and my daughter is 14 months old now!)
3) "Good Night, Sleep Tight" by Kim West (We didn't use this book until my daughter was 6 months old, but it was such a miracle that I wonder what would have happened if we tried out the "Sleep Lady" methods when she was going through her colicky phase! Definitely useful to have around as it is a quick read and it covers sleep issues from birth to age 5 and for the most part is adaptable to most parenting styles.)
Good luck!
A little disappointed.......2007-03-23
After reading this book I was a little disappointed. Yes it talks about how to work with a "high need child" The Book should probably been titled more like that. I have a fussy baby, but after reading the book, I realize he is not a "high need baby". The problem is due to earlier medical issues and now problems with finding a good formula and introducing foods. The chapter that they said would cover this topic was mostly centered around breastfeeding issues, and very little on formula fed babies and feeding solids. I know that once my son "feels" better than he is not fussy. I have taken him to the doctor and they have said he is just "colicky" and thats that. I am looking for other things to try and more solutions...turning to this book I had hoped to find it and was disappointed. It is not for a "fussy" baby its for a "high need Baby".
Attachment Parenting Helps Colic Symptoms.......2007-01-19
I am writing this for my daughter who had a colicky baby even though she was totally breastfed. Life was miserable for months. Vicki purchased the Dr. Sears colic sling and tried all of the other suggestions. Within a week, peace was restored! We now have a happy baby and happy parents. Symptoms are almost gone. They were all so stressed and exhausted, they were in a vicious cycle...like a dog chasing it's tail! Thank God for William & Martha Sears!
A Life Saver.......2007-01-09
Dr and Martha Sears saved my life. Gabriel is a high needs baby and without their affirmation that what I am doing to raise my son, I would be lost. I feel very comfortable with my parenting style now and will defend it to anyone. If you have a 'colicky' baby, please order and read this book. You'll be glad you did!!!!!

Down home cookin'.......2007-10-04
I purchased this book in hardbound when it came out years ago. I used it until the pages fell out. Now, I'm older and can't consume so much butter and sugar other artery clogging ingredients, but for special occasions I pull this baby out and go to town. Mmmm-mmm-good!
A great first cookbook.......2007-04-05
My mother gave this cookbook to me when I was in college. She wanted me to learn how to cook. I was a bookworm who was more interested in history than cooking so I always resisted.
She gave me the first edition of this cookbook a small paperback with the yellow cover and the same picture of the Darden sisters. Once I began reading this book I fell in love with the idea of learning to cook.
The recipies all worked great for me but what I really loved was how they tied each person to a group of recipies and how their family history was inter-connected to cooking.
It is a great cookbook yes but an even greater celebration of family.
Spoonbread and Strawberry Wine.......2007-03-08
This is definitely a keeper. I really wanted a good recipe for macaroni and cheese and my family loved the one that is in this book and requested that I make it again. It has that old fashioned consistency and taste just like my grandmother use to make when she was living. I can't wait to try the others. You can't go wrong with this book. If you don't know how to cook, people will think you can.
Spoonbread and Strawberry Wine.......2007-01-10
Great book. Was a little dissappointed to know that there was no recipe for Peach cobbler. Other than that, I love that the recipes. They are easy to follow and remind me of my Grandmother's lessons when she taught me to cook.
My all-time favorite cookbook!.......2006-10-24
Although I own well over a thousand cookbooks, this is unequivocally my favorite. The recipes are tried-and-true family favorites, preceded by brief descriptions of what makes them so special. However, the family stories are incredibly moving and priceless. A blue-eyed blonde from the northeast, I never knew that Black Americans used to have major problems traveling, since they could not stay or eat in most establishments. Town preachers would help provide assistance -- which is how pastor's daughter Aretha Franklin met many celebrities as a child in Motown. The authors' own family is unbelievably impressive -- and all the more so when you realize that they started with NOTHING; absolutely awesome, and incredibly inspiring. This book provides a moving, inspiring, and awesome account of a century in the lives of a wonderful African-American family ANYONE would be honored to know, and would be WELL worthwhile for that, alone -- but the sensational recipes are equally precious; tried-and-true family favorites anyone would be proud to serve. I have often given this book as a gift, and the recipients love it as much as I do. Don't miss this one; it is truly extraordinary.
