Book Description
Life is hectic enough for suburban single mom Jane Jeffrey this Christmas season--what with her having to survive cutthroat church bazaar politics and finish knitting the afghan from Hell at the same time. The last thing the harried homemaker needs is an unwelcome visit from old acquaintance Phyllis Wagner and her ill-mannered brat of a teenage son. And the Wagner picture becomes even more complicated when a dead body is woven into the design.
Solving a murder, however, is a lot more interesting than knitting, so Jane's determined to sew the whole thing up. But with a plethora of suspects and the appearance of a second corpse, this deadly tapestry is getting quite complex indeed. And Jane has to be very careful not to get strangled herself by the twisted threads shes attempting to unravel.

Well Written and Plotted Cozy Mystery.......2007-09-05
This will be the first Christmas since Jane Jeffry lost her husband in a car accident and she's determined to make it a good one for her three children, Mike, Katie, and Todd. Jane thinks she has everything under control (as much as anyone can during the holidays), even having time to crochet an afghan for an upcoming Christmas bazaar, but she is thrown for a loop when an old friend, Phyllis Wagner, tells Jane she is coming for a visit. Jane hasn't seen Phyllis in years and is wondering why Phyllis would want to spend Christmas with her instead of her rich and seemingly devoted husband. However, Jane gets an inkling of what is going on when Phyllis shows up with her long lost and extremely obnoxious son, Bobby. Phyllis settles in quickly, quickly buying a house in Jane's neighborhood, but is just as quickly murdered. There are plenty of suspects, including Bobby, Phyllis's husband Chet, and Chet's son John. A second murder narrows the list of suspects even further. Jane has been involved in murder investigations before and doesn't mind helping hunky detective Mel Van Dyne as he investigates this one.
"A Farewell to Yarns" is the delightful follow-up to Jill Churchill's first Jane Jeffry mystery Grime and Punishment (Jane Jeffrey Mystery Series #1). Jane continues to grow as a character - she can be strong willed yet find herself agreeing to open her house to someone she hasn't seen in years. Jane's friend Shelly Nowack also continues to grow as a character - she is a voice of reason when Jane isn't strong enough to do it herself and her helping Jane's kids plan a Christmas surprise for her was a great touch in the book. One of the things Churchill does best in the series is when she describes the world of the suburban housewife - most of the women in the series are stay at home mothers and I love the glimpses into their lives as Jane juggles carpooling for three children, volunteer activities, Christmas decorating, shopping, and crocheting an afghan for the bazaar. Mike's Christmas concert is a good example of how the small details make the book better. I also loved the details about the bazaar, especially when to came to pricing the items for sale. The minor characters are all well done especially Chet, Fiona and Albert Howard, Jane's "Uncle" Jim, and the always-delightful Suzie Williams. The romance between Jane and Mel is a nice, slow one, understandable because of the recent death of her husband, and it takes a step forward by the end of this book. The mystery is well plotted and had several intriguing twists, especially at the end, that will surprise readers.
"A Farewell to Yarns" is a well-done cozy mystery.
Christmas is the Season in this Warm Cozy Mystery.......2007-08-26
A warm home with 3 kids, pets, and Christmas in the air, Jane Jeffry makes a cozy home for her family. There are also warm friendships, a church bazaar, a school band concert . . . All the things that make for a cozy family life and a cozy book.
While Jane and her friends are putting together the church bazaar, the atmosphere gets even cozier. Jane's long-ago friend comes to visit for the holidays and helps with the bazaar.
Murders happen, and Jane is determined to find out who and why. She and Officer VanDyne are cooperative and friendly with each other. Once the mystery starts to unfold, you cannot put the book down. The interesting twist at the end will keep you reading until you are finished.
This is a wonderful, satisfying book. The atmosphere is superb and the mystery is clever. The whole book is entertaining. I am so glad I read it.
Very well done.......2006-03-17
Quick, enjoyable and well written. I liked it, and I don't like a lot of mysteries I read.
Afghan Anomaly; Angels & Angst; Tis the Season.......2005-07-13
What a way to pull a reader into a story, by using morning home sounds of an abandoned Today Show on a TV in the kitchen, an upstairs bedroom stereo blaring a Queens album, a burbling coffee maker, furnace blowing full blast ... As Churchill writes:
"... and from the basement there was the sound of some lonely item of clothing with a metal button thrashing around in the dryer."
The kitchen phone's ringing and ringing to the backdrop of Max the cat twitching deaf ears to his world, as he fishes for tidbits in the garbage disposal.
As the prose continues, perfectly posed details continue to surface like gifts unwrapped and abandoned under a holiday tree, in this Normal Rockwell presentation of a suburban sanctuary, a lifestyle nearly abandoned to extinction, a lifestyle which Jill Chruchill has deftly preserved in her Jane Jeffry cozy mysteries. The suburban housewife may have been stigmatized by a culture gone manic, marveling only at the more macho role-playing-pursuits for the female side of society's equation.
But, thanks to Jane Jeffry, the suburban housewife has regained her status, she's been regenerated with a smirk of satisfaction, at least for this reader.
And what is the time of the year for the metropolis rejected homemaker to be in full regalia with an ungodly number of holiday balls juggling in the air? You got it. Christmas is fast approaching. The season's just-like-clockwork overwhelm for those heroic Moms harrying homemaking routines carried on beyond the boundaries of skyscraper heaven has just surged to the hosannas for Jane, as an old school chum sets up housekeeping in Jane's home, tagging along a new found son who's packing into a chip on his shoulder more hostility than Goldy's Arch (from Diane Mott Davidson's series) could ever dream to drudge out of his derriere.
The plot weaves through Jane's ongoing projects, the main one setting up a charity bazzar for her church, her teenagers' ongoing noises of various symbolic and real expressions trailing behind their paths through hormonal oblivion, and the interjection of this old friend she hardly knows, her son from Hell, and I can't recall what all else.
With each Jane Jeffry novel I read, from the early offerings to the latest, I'm amazed at how easily her plots spread along under fingertips turning pages, how simply and lightly entertaining they seem to be, while subtle symbolism and thematic machinations seethe under the fast rhythmic flow of the surface. It's so EASY to miss the depth. But, make no mistake; it's there. You may want to look for it. Finding it might be more rewarding than the entertainment buzzing through the pages as they flip themselves so you can read with less effort.
These JJ novels seem to parallel the constant and pervasive underestimation of the suburban housewife, that role which can be played successfully only by the most complex personalities among us.
This book is ripe with the ambiance of holiday cheer mixed inexorably into the deepest wells of human angst and anomaly. Please forgive my repetition, but I'm still in conundrum about how this series can be called light, while I add my conclusion that it is. What a magician of a flickering glow and contrasting darkness Jill Churchill weaves into A FAREWELL TO YARNS, as she contemplates fame Vs abandonment and anonymity, as she pulls an amateur afghan into a last minute, real and symbolic success.
Cheers to you, Jill; my hat's off to your subtle skill,
Linda G. Shelnutt
Curl up with Jane Jeffry.......2003-02-18
The second mystery in Jill Churchill's series is equal to the first--fun, easy to read, and with just enough "hmmmm" to keep the reader guessing til the end. Churchill's dry sense of humor and good writing make for a relaxing and enjoyable mystery without the gore and violence.

Book Description
John Shirley takes us on a journey from the mildly bizarre to the downright weird and then some in this, his latest collection of short fiction. The book incorporates some of Shirley's classic stories along with some revised and hard to find material and is highlighted by nine never before published works. A must have for the Shirley reader or collector. Includes art work by Alan M. Clark. "The 37 stories in this mind-shaking collection are grouped into four sections of ascending weirdness, from Really Weird to Really, Really, Really, Really Weird. Considering that the first entry, I Want to Get Married, Says the Worlds Smallest Man, concerns a 28"-tall midget who weds a full-size, crack-smoking whore, to brutal effect, readers may rest assured that an unforgettable trip awaits them from cover to cover. But weirdness per se doesnt seem to be Shirleys aim, except insofar as outr subject matter (as in Skeeter Junkie, wherein the mind of a heroin addict enters the body of a mosquito) or prose style (e.g., the sentences of the potent and moving Ten Things to be Grateful For, as long and sinuous as anacondas) can wrench readers from their habitual frame of reference to experience the world afresh. The author of last years Black Butterflies demonstrates throughout a fecund imagination, wicked sense of humor and thematic seriousnessregarding the malleability of reality, the hellishness of drug abuse, the fragility of human constructthat render these tales as profound as they are sensational. Selected from 26 years of output, ranging from SF to dark fantasy to crime, drawn from books, magazines and a Web site (and with 10 entries never before published), the collection isnt all aces. But the majority of stories are, making this another virtuoso offering from a writer whose daring and originality continue to astonish." - Publishers Weekly Contents: * The Author Wants to Tell You... Customer Reviews:
Multi genre collection from horror, sci-fi, fantasy, and splatter.......2007-01-28
The most astonishing detail of this book is that, out of all the stories available, two stand out so startlingly clever that the two alone gave me cause to raise my rating by one star. 'Skeeter Junkie' is a fascinating tale of a heroin addict's transformation into the body of a mosquito. 'Ten Things To Be Grateful For' is one of the most hard-impacting shorts I've read in a long time. "Be thankful, because this could be you", Shirley warns, as he covers being beaten and having your spine pulled apart, being sold as a child to a $ex factory, being a multiple diabetes amputee ignored by health care, and other equally heinous scenarios.
Here's the lineup:
Really Weird Stories:
1) "I Want To Get Married" Says The Worlds Smallest Man
2) Will The Chill
3) Tapes 12, 14, 15, 22, And 23
4) Don't Be Afraid
5) Lot Five, Building Seven, Door Twenty Three
6) Kindred
7) The Word "Random," Deliberately Repeated
8) Voices
9) The Last Ride

1) ... And The Angel With Television Eyes
2) The Sweet Caress Of Mother Nature
3) In The Cornelius Arms
4) Quill Tripstickler, Out The Window
5) I Live In Elizabeth
6) Morons At The Speed Of Light
7) Silent Crickets
8) Screens
9) Brittany? Oh: She's In Translucent Blue
10) Ticket To Heaven
Really Really Really Weird Stories:
1) Ash
2) Triggering
3) When Enter Came
4) Skeeter Junkie
5) What Joy! What Fulfillment!
6) 199619971998
7) Preach
8) Preach: Part Two: The Apocalypse Of The Reverend John Shirley
9) Modern Transmutations Of The Alchemist
Really Really Really Really Weird Stories:
1) Just Like Suzie
2) Cold Feet
3) The Peculiar Happiness Of Professor Cort
4) Tahiti In Terms Of Squares
5) Equilibrium
6) What Cindy Saw
7) The Almost Empty Rooms
8) Ten Things To Be Grateful For
9) The Sea Was Wet As Wet Could Be
There are more than just two good stories in this collection, but many of them were simply too disjointed for me to relate to, and I'm a Shirley fan. This is Shirley's most comprehensive collection, comprised of shorts and some flash fiction.
Some other talented pieces are "I Want To Get Married" Says World's Smallest Man, a tragically doomed marriage. 'Lot Five, Building Seven, Door Twenty-Three' is an excellent vampire tale, with one of the most unique and grotesque vampires. '...And The Angels With Television Eyes' has a shudderingly well described Metal Man. 'Sweet Caress' is a nice kitty tale, and 'In The Cornelius Arms' is a great tale of goth culture.
In 'Ash', a criminal runs the streets, insane from the Yoruba inflicted revenge for his crime. 'Just Like Suzie' is probably the grossest of the tales, and worth a drippy mention. Ending the collection is the flash fiction piece 'The Sea Was Wet As Wet Could Be', a haunting tale of expansive demise.
If you're a first time reader of John Shirley's short fiction, I'd have to recommend 'Black Butterflies' over this collection. Some of these tales seemed to border on unintelligible rather than just weird.
Thanks to Alan M. Clark, there's some nice cover and a few pieces of very bizarre interior art that add to the flavor of the book. Pick this up if you're a Shirley fan, or just a fan of 'way out there on the edge' bizarre tales. Enjoy!
What a ride!.......2004-12-15
Shirley's best work lies in his short stories, and RRRWS includes thirty seven of Shirley's finest taut tales of the desperately demented. For fans of New Noir and Black Butterflies, this collection is sure to please. While RRRWS may seem like merely a cathartic romp through Shirley's miswired grey matter, digesting these stories merely for their shock value would be a mistake. The true beauty of this collection lays not so much in the horrific scenarios Shirley dreams up for his unfortunate protagonists. Its real heart lies in the compelling attempts of these unfortunate characters to make sense of unspeakable plights. Just be sure to give yourself a breather between stories. Reading them in one sitting could prove hazardous to your health.
Not so very weird.......2001-11-20
I don't know why he would call this book really, really, really, really, weird stories. The stories are ok and the writing not so bad. But not worth reading.
What a collection!.......2001-08-11
This was my first John Shirley experience. It has left me both eager and afraid to track down more of his work. I'm eager to read more Shirley because he is master of stories. He can write in any genre. His stories are fascinating. I like them. I'm afraid to read more Shirley because the stories are so engrossing that I lose track of time. That, and the fact, that many of his stories are quite disturbing.
As other reviewers have noted, this collection is not made up of all winners. In any collection of nearly 40 stories, there will be some poorer stories. While this collection does not have any bad stories, there are several short vignettes that perhaps should have been left out of this collection.
Several of the stories in this collection left me reeling. 'Lot Five...' is a marvelous story that really defies description. There are several acolytes of a cult-like leader who are attempting to wend their way through a maze of doors, hallways, and security guards to reach the guru. I loved this story. It was weird and horrific at the same time.
Another of my favorites was '...And the Angel with Television Eyes', a story about a tele-screen actor who's been plagued with bizarre dreams. He wakes one morning to find an iron griffin on his balcony. The griffin tells him that he's being summoned by some sort of ethereal lords. Before the actor can act on the summons he's kidnapped by hideous harpies and taken to a rooftop balcony where a metal man, Lord Thanatos, tells him that the griffin is attempting to trick the actor. A large battle ensues in which the actor learns of his true identity and the large mystery behind the events of his morning. I am excited to hear that Mr. Shirley has recently completed a novel expansion of this story, due in 2002.
As the title of the collection indicates, many of the stories in this collection are very weird. In fact, the stories are organized by their weirdness. The first section is Really Weird Stories. The second is Really, Really Weird Stories...and so on.
Those of us who love weird fiction, and you know who you are, should pick up this collection. It's full of great weirdness. I should point out that many of the stories in this collection contain explicit sexual content, so if that's not your thing, stay away. On the whole, I found this collection to be a mind-blowing trip through the works of a brilliant author, John Shirley. Immediately after finishing this book, I jumped online and ordered several other Shirley titles. I fully expect to enjoy them as much as I did this one. Recommended.
Uneven.......2001-04-11
Not Shirley's best work but worth the price of the purchase. Some of his stories seemed little more than pointless vignettes, drug or booze addled memories or simple nonsense. But when Shirley is on his game (more misses than hits) its the genuine stuff. I think a little more editing before a rush to publish may have payed dividends or at least discarding half of the stories in favor of quality over quantity.

The Sugar Busters! diet lets you eat just about anything except certain carbohydrates, including refined sugars, red and white potatoes, corn, white rice, highly processed grains, beets, and carrots. This cookbook offers a variety of Sugar Busters!- acceptable recipes, averaging about 40 percent "correct" carbohydrates, 30 percent protein, and 30 percent fat. These recipes won't keep you in the kitchen all day, though most aren't produced in a flash, either. Breakfasts are predominantly egg dishes. Lunches include Stir-Fried Ginger Chicken, Chesapeake Crab Cakes, Whole-Wheat Spaghetti with Olive-Tomato Sauce, Fourth of July Macaroni Salad (colorful with red onions, tomatoes, green bell peppers, and onions), and Bayou Spicy Boiled Shrimp. Dinner entrées emphasize meat, fish, and poultry, with some regional and international dishes. The collection also includes separate recipe sections for vegetables, appetizers, salad dressings, sauces, and holiday dishes.
Many recipes are high in fat, especially saturated fat, such as Green Chilies Cheese Casserole, which uses six large eggs and four cups of grated cheese to eight ounces of green chilies. No nutritional breakdown is provided, so if you're trying to keep your fat intake to 30 percent, you'll have to guess. The authors suggest finishing the meal with "dessert of a simple green salad coated with a subtle olive oil and milk herb dressing or a few bites of cheese" or "a few nuts." If those don't hit the spot, there's a choice of seven dessert recipes, including a high-saturated-fat vanilla ice cream made with six egg yolks, a quart of whole milk, a quart of cream, and a cup of artificial sweetener.

Not a guide.......2004-04-29
When one is researching culinary schools it helps to have some sort of a way of classifying them. Unfortuneatly the author decided to only list the schools, with almost no other information. I now know the name of every culinary school in texas, and he missed a couple(!), but I know next to nothing about them. All the information listed is what degrees or certificates they offer. No real information on quality.
Frankly I found better information for free online. Unless you can't locate information online this book is largely worthless.

This book is an excellent source of information for any cook looking for schools or educational programs, whether at the professional level or just for fun. Information is separated by Career/Professional Programs versus Recreational Programs and is indexed by state and country. It includes costs and contact information. Only additional piece of information I would have liked would have been assessments or recommendations on quality of the programs offered.
