Good Series.......2006-11-16
I enjoyed the first installment of this series, and the second one didn't disappoint. Persia is a good lead character, and the supporting characters are interesting and fun as well.
The only problem I had was that I was a bit let-down by the ending...I thought it was very predictable and easy to figure out.
Looking forward to the next installment.
review of blush with death.......2006-09-16
i love easy reading mysteries....this book and author has all the potential but disappointed me with "blue" words, and sex scenes that really didn't need to be put in..i was very sad that it was in the story line...i won't buy the series...too bad i loved the idea of the character's skill in aromatherapy
Will they love Venus Envy?.......2006-09-11
Persia and Aunt Florence are struggling to keep Venus Envy open. Why? Bebe Wilcox has opened her own boutique and is hell bent on putting everyone else out of business. She and her workers stop at nothing. They steal and sabotage without so much as a second thought.
Then one of Bebe's pushy saleswomen ends up dead. The "game" has advanced to a new level.
In an attempt to save Venus Envy, Persia and her aunt stage a public falling out. Persia applies at Bebe's Boutique and is hired. Can she snoop around without getting caught? Can she find the stolen goods and enough evidence to put Bebe away and close down her shop for good? Can she do all this before the killer finds out and comes after her?
I like Persia. She is a fun character and very well constructed by the author. She is three-dimensional and her friends and aunt are terrific as well. I love the small-town feel of this book. The boutique is a great setting for the story. The feud between the two boutiques is very believable and there are plenty of twists and turns in the plot to keep you guessing. I highly recommend this book.
Not Too Cozy Cozy.......2006-09-02
If profanity, cavalier sex and New Age attitudes don't bother you then, you might like this series. But if you like your cozies G-Rated, then this series probably isn't for you. Possibly only PG-17, this second installment in the Bath & Body Mysteries series is peppered with profanity and casual sex. Although parts of the plot were a bit weak (the altercation between Aunt Florence & Persia), it was interesting enough to keep me reading until the end.
A good story on its own, a great sequel..........2006-07-25
The second in the Bath and Body Series can be read independently and enjoyed on its own but fits great in the series. Relationships developed in the first book evolve naturally and new characters appear to add intrigue and romance.
The plot centers around corporate espionage in the beauty industry. Venus Envy, the spa owned and operated by the main character Persia and her aunt Florence, is struggling to make ends meet and being outdone by a new player in town - Bebe.
The first part of the book is a little slow for readers who've read the first book. The final showdown between Bebe and Persia is, however, intriguing and entertaining. Overall the book is a good second in the series and leaves you anxious for the next book.
Book Description
By the end of the 15th century, the remains of the ancient gods littered the landscape of Western Europe. Christianity had erased the religions of ancient Greece and Rome and most Europeans believed the destruction of classical art was God's judgment on the pagan deities. How, then, did European artists during the next three centuries create such monumental works as Botticelli's The Birth of Venus and Raphael's Parnassus? In The Mirror of the Gods, Malcolm Bull tells the revolutionary story of how the great artists of Western Europe--from Botticelli and Leonardo to Titian and Rubens--revived the gods of ancient Greece and Rome. Each chapter focuses on a different deity and sheds dazzling new light on such familiar figures as Venus, Hercules, and Bacchus. Bull draws on hundreds of illustrations to illuminate the ancient myths through the eyes of Renaissance and Baroque artists, not as they appear in classical literature. When the wealthy and powerful princes of Christian Europe began to identify with the pagan gods, myth became the artist's medium for telling the story of his own time. The Mirror of the Gods is the fascinating and extraordinary story of how Renaissance artists combined mythological imagery and artistic virtuosity to change the course of western art. The Mirror of the Gods profoundly deepens our understanding of some of the greatest and most subversive artwork in European history. This delightfully told, lavishly illustrated, and extraordinary book amply rewards our ongoing fascination with classical myth and Renaissance art.
Book Description
Contemporary Western culture is seeking a new paradigm of manliness relevant to both men and women, at all stages of life. More and more we question the models provided by our personal and collective fathers. We have been trapped in too narrow a definition of the masculine. We are ready for a new one, one that does not diminish the essence of maleness, but is also broader than the too-pervasive limits of toughness, defensiveness, rigidity, rationality and aggression.
Our very survival may depend on growing into a broader sense of the masculine, one that welcomes equal partnership with women, lifting from them the burden of hiding their own fullness of character so as not to intimidate the men around them or be the targets of their aggression. One that encourages the growth of the new generation, the new idea, the new crop, the new art, with the confidence of understanding that none of them can emerge without receptive fathering. An enlarged concept of masculinity is the promise of this most engaging book.

An astutely researched and superbly reasoned study.......2004-03-07
The Irish Bull God: Image Of Multiform And Integral Masculinity is a scholarly exploration by Sylvia Brinton Perera of contemporary Western culture's need for a paradigm of maleness that best serves men and women at all stages of life. In an era that increasingly questions or rejects the images of masculinity put forth by its individual and collective fathers, The Irish Bull God: Image Of Multiform And Integral Masculinity is an astutely researched and superbly reasoned study of human psychology, identity, and changing societal needs. Also very highly recommended is Sylvia Perera's three earlier works: Descent To The Goddess: A Way Of Initiation For Women; The Scapegoat Complex: Toward A Mythology Of Shadow And Guilt; and Celtic Queen Maeve And Addiction.
Book Description
MOMMA DOESN'T TALK ABOUT THAT PARTY...
When gods still walked the Earth, a king could pray for a sign and have a white bull rise from the sea to confirm his claim to the throne. But a god's price was high, and when Minos did not keep his promise to the god Poseidon, the god meddled with Minos' wife...and the Minotaur, a child with the head of a bull, was born. The question is, did Poseidon intend his son to be worshiped as a new god, or is he the god's curse on Knossos, a monster that will destroy it?
Ariadne was the Minotaur's half-sister, the only one who would touch him and care for him when he was born. She was also high priestess of Dionysus, sworn to interpret his Visions, but one Vision destroys her peace. Dionysus Sees that the bull-head must die or bring disaster upon the realm. Can Ariadne agree to the slaughter of the deformed half-brother who clings to her as the only one who cares for him? Can she protect the Minotaur in defiance of Dionysus' vision and dare the god's wrath? Should she?

Another Winner.......2001-09-25
Roberta Gellis' mythological novels are some of my favorite readings. I have never seen any other writer who uses the Greeks gods and goddesses as settings and characters of their plots and she does such A GREAT JOB. "Bull God" is focused ont he minotaur of Crete and the reason he came into being and how he was gotten rid of. Totally engrossing and left me wanting more. Thanks to Ms Gellis for creating such imaginative plots and characters. I'm looking forward to the next one.
Best Yet.......2000-08-26
This is Roberta Gellis's fourth novel in a series of reinterpretations of Greek myths. It's the best of four very good books. What makes these books so good is that Gellis is able to get inside the myths and look at them with fresh eyes. The story she then tells is what could have happened, what the story was (or might have been) before it was condenced into a myth. As usual, the characters are fully realized, the plot cleverly constructed, and the relationships both intriguing and satisfying. Bull God is a great read. No Gellis fan will be surprised that the Minataur is the character you will remember longest and most fondly.
More than the Minotaur.......2000-08-24
"Bull God" is a wonderful tale, intriguing and full of compassion. It is the story of the Greek gods of Olympus, humans on the island of Crete and the power of the Earth Mother, with a few Roman and Egyptian deities and stray Athenians thrown in. Truly evil characters meet merely selfish ones and still others are simply misunderstood. Of course, some are purely good and devout, but the essence of each character is surprising. This makes for an unusual story. Even the Minotaur, the false Bull God had a name at birth and for a time was capable of human speech. It is hard not to feel Ariadne's horror when she finds her mal-formed brother enjoying his first taste of human flesh! This is not a grisly book, but is mostly a love story showing the taming of the god of fertility, ecstasy and wine. Dionysus teaches Ariadne the true nature of the Olympian 'gods' and she grows into a courageous heroine whose dreams are fulfilled. I really like this book, but, as yet, will only buy future works of Roberta Gellis in paperback, hence the 4 stars.
The Minotaur's story from Ariadne's viewpoint.......2000-05-27
Having just taught the story of the minotaur this month, I was fascinated by Ms Gellis's twist on the story. Ariadne is the daughter of King Minos of Crete in the age of heros (almost 4000 years ago). She is picked to be the acolyte of Dionysus after her grandmother Europa dies. Much to the amazement of everyone and the jealousy of her mother, Dionysus actually answers her call. But King Minos has angered Poseidon, resulting in the birth of a monster -- the Minotaur. Gellis goes beyond the myths we studied in high school and ferrets out the details of the original stories, spinning them into a rich tapestry. All of the legend plays out for her readers: the labyrinth, Theseus (as a smooth-spoken jerk), the arrogant King Minos and the tormented Dionysus. Great fun, but don't expect a typical romance.

Animal cruelty for the sake of science.......2007-10-01
Animal cruelty has been in the news once again but with this book, the reader realizes that the cruel use of animals for sporting purposes pales in comparison to the cruelty that continues day after day with animal testing. This book is a poignant portrait of lonely medical student, Elizabeth, who meets her "soul mate" in an experimental lab. She quickly decides that the dog, Damien, deserves a chance for a better life without being subjected to torture in the name of science. Sufficient explanation into Elizabeth's seemingly sudden willingness to detour from a promising medical career is a bit shallow but does fit these circumstances. From a dog lover's perspective, her devotion to Damien is pure and fulfilling. Insight into the mind of the pit bull is magnificently handled by the author and serves to reinforce the notion that pit bulls have gotten a bad rap from society. This book is not an easy read but the reader will come away with an experience that will linger for a long, long time after the book is returned to the shelf.
The Dog Who spoke with Gods.......2007-09-21
Great Book ! All those people that question the breeds love for man needs to read this book! One of the better books that I read.
awful.......2007-07-29
I love books and have many in my collection. This may be the only book I have ever thrown away.
A book for a lover of dogs.......2007-06-03
If you are potty about dogs you will love this book.Actually i'm a cat person so i was waiting to be convinced although i don't dislike dogs.I found myself pleading with this book not to become sentimental although the dog seemed precocious but normal. Then it started talking about animals being tortured.Animals in fear or pain freaks me out so i couldn't continue.I skipped ahead to be soothed by a rescue in progress but landed on a page where the dog talks.More than sentimental it was daft.Being an adult book i assumed the title was a metaphor.
AMAZING!.......2006-04-02
AMAZING!, is the only way to describe this book. I laughed, I cried (more than I care to admit)and I will always carry with me the feelings and emotions that this book brought out in me. To know that someone else understands the everlasting bond of TRUE friendship, a TRUE mate touches my heart more than I can express. Diane, thank you.

Book Description
Based on the breakthrough understanding that virtually all headaches are forms of migraine--because migraine is not a specific type of headache, but the built-in mechanism that causes headaches of all kinds, along with neck stiffness, sinus congestion, dizziness, and other problems--Dr. Buchholz's Heal Your Headache puts headache sufferers back in control of their lives with a simple, transforming program:
Step 1: Avoid the "Quick Fix." Too often painkillers only make matters worse because of the crippling complication known as rebound.
Step 2: Reduce Your Triggers. The crux of the program: a migraine diet that eliminates the foods that push headache sufferers over the top.
Step 3: Raise Your Threshold. When diet and other lifestyle changes aren't enough, preventive medication can help stay the course.
That's it: in three steps turn your headache problems around.

Best Migraine help I ever found.......2007-09-28
This book about migraine relief has changed my life. I was getting 3 or more migraines a week. After 3 months of doing the 1-2-3 program, I am down to at most 1 migraine a month if I do not watch what trigger foods I consume or my stress levels.
A great book for learning about all kinds of headaches, not just migraines too.
Life saver for me.
Best Doctor on the Subject!.......2007-09-18
This book is really all it's hyped up to be! It makes more sense than any other headache help book out there and best of all the Dr.'s plan works! It honestly worked for me and I have not even completely cut out regular coffe yet. I'm down to one cup a day and soon that will be zero. I've been following most of the book's advice and have not suffered a migraine over the past 2 weeks since I finished reading it. I normally suffer from "classic migraines" at least 3 times a month, especially when Aunt Flo visits. I'm happy to report she's now gone and I did NOT HAVE ANY migraines! I am a true believer in the 1*2*3 Program! Buy the book and improve your health!!!
Great book.......2007-09-06
I bought the book Heal Your Headache: The 1-2-3 Program because my mom told me about it. It is very informative and has really helped me with my migraine headaches. I found, through reading the book, that it is bananas that trigger mine. Bananas were actually causing the worst headaches of my life. I have also noticed that cheese triggers a bad headache for me but not a migraine. I never knew that allergy meds can cause headaches until I read the book. I recommend this book to anybody that suffers with headaches. It will inform you on what causes headaches and the best part is it teaches you what to do to prevent headaches. Even migraines. I will say that I have not had a migraine headache since I bought the book. I thank David Buchholz for writing his book. I am sure he has helped lots of people other than myself. He is a gift from above.
He Solved my Migraine Problem.......2007-08-31
David Buchholz book changed my life!! After weekly (2 to 3 times a week) headaches for many years, he has given me the tools to get rid of my Excedrin and the many triptans that I took every week. When one tablet didn't work, I went from 2 to 3 and then 4 was not able to get rid of the headache. I just knew that there had to be a better way. His book was recommended to me and the rest is history. I stopped cold turkey, his recommendation, and I have tried to stick to his diet. Aside from some bearable headaches, I am doing fine. I have been doing this for less than a week, but I will never go back to abusing those terrible drugs again. I have tried to tell my former neurologists (the best of Boston) and they have not returned my calls. I guess they are not interestsed in hearing about an approach that works without drugs.
So true...........2007-08-30
The more I read this book, the more angry I was at my neurologist for being so prescription happy. I am thinking of taking a copy of this book to him on my next appoinment along with all my unused quick fixes. I admit I cannot follow any diet to the letter, or even come close. But, since I eliminated the presciption and OTC quick fixes, red wine, chocolate, and the biggie CAFFEINE, my headaches have been DRASTICALLY reduced to the point where every now and then I need an ibuprofen. This makes life so much more enjoyable.

Not very useful.......2007-02-23
This book fell apart as soon as I opened it. The glue wasn't strong enough to keep the pages together, and they fell right out of the book. And that was just a foretaste of the fact that the recipes were not going to be very useful at all. The problem is that it is very poorly organized...there is a heavy concentration on the countries involved instead of the dishes I was interested in trying. The author couldn't decide whether it was a cookbook or a historic and geographic tour guide. She needed to make up her mind, but didn't.
