Caterer and amateur detective Goldy Schulz is at it again in this tasty treat of a novel. Although catering two events more different than a hockey party (complete with the guests chasing pucks on blades) and a decorous breakfast for a doll collectors' convention would be hard to imagine, Goldy manages each with aplomb, Goalies Grilled Tuna and Babsie's Tarts included. While this would be plenty for anyone's plate, Goldy is also trying to decide whether she wants her abusive ex-husband arrested for his current girlfriend's murder. Certainly Goldy is perfectly willing to believe that the Jerk (as Davidson's fans know she has dubbed her former spouse, John Richard Korman) could have done the loathsome deed in one of his violent moments, but she is torn by the desire both to see him brought to justice and for their son not to have a convicted killer for a father. So, between letting the pizza dough rise and baking treasures such as Chocolate Comfort Cookies, Goldy sets out to make sure the police have indeed got the right man.

Davidson's fans will recognize the pattern while new readers will relish her witty, recipe-filled, searing plot. Old friends (all of whom suitably appreciate good food) make their reappearance, including Korman's other ex, Marla, and Goldy's shrimp-peeling husband Tom. While apprentice Julian Teller has left for his restaurant management degree at Cornell, his place in the plot is filled with the more lethargic--if equally good-natured--Maguire Perkins. New characters revolve around the murder itself: Korman's predictably shapely assistant Ree Ann and the very serious doll collectors play a role, as do the administrators of the health maintenance organization Korman has joined. A pleasure to read, even if Goldy's imaginative concoctions make you hungry long before mealtime. --K.A. Crouch

    4 out of 5 stars I enjoyed this.......2007-03-26

After trying some "Susan Henshaw" and some "Blackbird Sisters" mysteries and being disappointed, I found this book. It was "meatier" if you'll pardon the pun and I felt that I knew the characters. I will be reading more of Ms. Davidson's books.

    5 out of 5 stars Tastfully done!.......2005-08-28

This is my first book by this author, but won't be my last. My stomach rumbled the whole time. The recipes sound yummy and the book was hard to put down. I read it in 24 hours. It was a light read but enjoyable and entertaining.

The plot is see-through. I think we can all see that the Jerk is a JERK indeed, but everyone knows somehow he didn't do it, deep down I think. All the fingers point to some of the other characters we meet along the way. I really felt I was at the health food store, and I loved the details. Colorado being my home state, I really loved all the descriptions.

I read the little blurb of Prime Cut, and already got it from the library! These recipes will be added to my collection!

3 out of 5 stars Great book for a rainy day.......2005-07-11

This is my first exposure to Diane Mott Davidson and I enjoyed it. I love to cook, so I plan to try some of the recipes from the book.

I agree with the other reviewers in that it is a light, easy read. If you're looking for something with a real deep plot, better pass this one by. On the otherhand, if you are looking for something that doesn't require a lot of concentration and that can easily be read in a week or less, I recommend this book.

I will be back for more of Goldy.

This is the first book of Diane Mott Davidson that I have read.
Terrific story, fast moving, interesting characters, and last but not least a good plot. The recipes are an added bonus, I tried her Chicken a la Orange last night and both my husband and I loved it! I'm looking forward to other books in her collection.

4 out of 5 stars The return of "The Jerk".......2005-04-19

Caterer Goldy Schultz is understandably leery of her abusive ex-husband John Richard whom she calls "The Jerk". When a woman named Patricia McCracken wants to sue John Richard for medical malpractice Goldy has mixed feelings because she knows that any blow to her ex-husband's income will eventually effect her child support. Things become even more complicated when John Richard's girlfriend is found dead, and the police have him pegged as the #1 Suspect. Although Goldy feels that John Richard is capable of such a deed, she also realizes that for her son's sake she must try to clear him of the murder. Diane Mott Davidson serves up the usual intriguing mystery, along with some delectable recipes in this, the 7th. book of the series.

                    3 out of 5 stars Interesting, but I didn't finish it.......2006-09-14

I came to this book from the bibliography in "Sorcerer & Sword", so I had high hopes. I figured it would be something a bit unusual and something with a lot of struggle and character defining choices.

I was not as impressed as I had hoped to be. Nothing wrong with the book and some interesting pieces. But I usually finish almost anything I start and I was easily able to put this one down. Tomoe seemed like just a drifter; I couldn't get into a quest for her honor.

                    4 out of 5 stars The Mikado's Samurai.......2005-09-01

Tomoe Gozen, the Wikipedia tells us, was a legendary woman samurai in the service of Minamoto no Yoshinaka who attempted to seize the throne of Japan from his brother in 1184. Now Jessica Salmonson has written about an alternate world where Japan is much the same as it was back then, but magic worked and demons and trolls lurked in the shadows waiting for their opportunities.

The story opens with Tomoe and her companions in the service of a warlord - Shojiro Shigeno - helping him in his conflict will Huan, a magician who hates Shigeno and wants his wealth. Tomoe is stricken fatally in a battle and her friend Ushii carries her off to the castle of the wizard to demand her healing. But the wizard drives a tough bargain, Tomoe lives, but she becomes his own samurai. By magic he forces her to turn against Shigeno in a horrific battle, betraying her honor and making herself a masterless samurai.

From this point Tomoe's story is of one who seeks the keys to her own redemption. Ugo Mohri, the Shogun's Champion, tells her that she must wait to serve the Mikado in his need, and that one day they will test each other's skill. Tomoe's begins a journey across Japan with a variety of companions, righting wrongs and creating her fate. Deeply hurt by her weakness to Huan's magical skill, Tomoe is so fearful of being around magic that she becomes its victim in spite of herself. Until she can conquer her fears, she cannot face Mohri, and until she faces Mohri, she cannot regain her honor.

Salmonson does a very nice job of recreating the storytelling of the ancient courts of Japan. The style is reminiscent of an older time when legends were treated with a certain amount of ritual and respect. The story has its own rhythm, one that provides an alien atmosphere. While not precisely authentic it appeals to American stereotypes of ancient Japan and the reader will find Salmonson's dreams of Naipon are addictive.

                    4 out of 5 stars Excellent Saga.......2004-09-25

The Tomoe Gozen saga, consisting of "Tomoe Gozen", "The Golden Naginata" and "Thousand Shrine Warrior" is an excellent piece of fiction set in an alternate universe - one where magic exists and works, where monsters, devils, spirits and gods exist and intercede in human affairs.

In Naipon, that universe's version of Japan, Tomoe Gozen, a female samurai, battles to retain her sense of honor and self.

Salmonson writes vivid character descriptions, but the style is at times a bit flat. Mostly, this seems due to the tale occurring from the point of Tomoe, who puts her bushido before her own wants and needs. Very rarely, that flatness interferes (I think) with the storytelling. Still, this is a tremendously underrated work and I always love recommending it to people who are at all interested in epic fantasy.

4 out of 5 stars Fighting her way back to honor and glory.......2003-05-27

Salmonson writes of an alternate world, Naipon, using her knowledge of Japanese culture and traditions. As a woman, Tomoe Gozen, the heroine of this tale, is an unusual samurai warrior. The differences between her and other samurai go beyond her sex, however.

When Tomoe Gozen dies in battle, serving the great warlord to whom she is pledged, her good friend Ushii makes a deal with an evil magician: Bring her back to the land of the living and he will serve the magician, the enemy of the warlord. Little does he know that the deal also means that his friend will not only end up losing herself, but she will also have to serve the same evil lord. When she finally comes to herself, Ushii is doomed, and she leaves to wander the country as an unpledged warrior or ronin. During her travels she experiences many adventures through which she regains both her honor and her place at the side of the daughter of the now dead warlord she had once served.

It becomes Tomeoe Gozen's duty to regain her mistress' inheritance. In doing so, she can enhance her own reputation and further redeem her honor.

The battle scenes are quite vivid. Although the overall writing style may be somewhat passive for some of today's readers, the story is well worth any needed effort. Salmonson brings samurai and Naiponese culture to life and gives the reader insight into those cultures as well as a good story.

There are three novels featuring Tomoe Gozen, of which this is the first. Readers who enjoy these would also enjoy Salmonson's "The Swordswoman." Readers who like strong female characters might also enjoy "Deathweave" and "Darkloom" by Cary Osborne or "Winter Queen" by Devin Cary.

3 out of 5 stars A fascinating, if confusing story........1999-10-16

Tomoe Gozen travels through fictional Naipon with all theinevitability of Conan in a really bad mood. Swinging two samuraiswords, there is no opponent she can't out-fight, even to the point of conquering a whole army single-handed! The story is often confusing, with scenes taking on the feel of a dreamscape.

That said, the story has a charm that kept drawing me back to it. The author transports the reader to her world, immersing them in its rich distinctiveness. If you are interested in a high-fantasy story, set in an Oriental setting, then I would recommend this book to you. (I just wouldn't be able to give you a summary of the storyline.)

                    4 out of 5 stars One Samurai's Road.......2005-09-13

This is the second volume in Jessica Salmonson's fantasy series set around the life of Tomoe Gozen, a semi-legendary woman Samurai in 12th Century Japan. Gozen is believed to have become the wife of Minamoto no Yoshinaka who launched an unsuccessful struggle to gain lordship over Japan and the Minamoto clan that culminated in a massive battle near Kyoto in 1184.

This part of the story starts with Tomoe's refusal to accept a husband. In Feudal Japan a woman was permitted to be a samurai until she was married. At that time she must put aside her weapons and become an obedient homemaker - hardly the kind of role for which the young woman was suited. Instead she storms off and becomes enmeshed in fighting the efforts of one sword smith to destroy the life and works of Okio, the most brilliant sword smith of the age.

In a mid-book climax where Tomoe and her companions battle the 55 samurai who took the life of Okio she discovers the one of her new friends is actually Kiso Yoshinaka, to whom she was promised as bride, and who invites her to join him as a full equal instead of a subservient child bearer. Tomoe accepts, and joins in Lord Kiso's conquests as he gradually builds the strength he will need to challenge his cousin.

In the process of this struggle Tomoe is granted the use of the Golden Naginata, a weapon that will blind anyone who see is unless it has been coated with the blood of the magical kirin that is its guardian. While the weapon often grants victory it seems to collect a toll on its wielder, not in strength, but in anger and self-doubt. Thus this isn't just an adventure story but a tale of Tomoe's efforts to find herself in a culture that always seems to limit her choices.

Aside from an overly long battle scene that seems to be more concerned with its emulation of Japanese convention than stimulating interest, this is a better book than it's predecessor. It is more of a novel, and Tomoe Gozen reveals a great deal of character as she follows her own difficult path. She is atypical, even for a female samurai and never falls into the role of romantic heroine.

4 out of 5 stars A Student of Modern Day Naginata - Australia.......2002-01-29

A rare and beautiful adventure of a warrior in a world of Japanese goblins, samurai's and a truly glorious weapon that Jescia Salmonson has written in The Golden Naginata.
I treasure this Japanese fantasy, it's the most colourful fantasy adventure I've entered. It's one of those books that will remain on my shelf for years to come.

4 out of 5 stars The Golden Naginata.......2000-04-03

This is a delightful and thoughtful story set in the mythic world of Naipon where the myths and dreams of the Japanese are real. The story is about the woman warrior Tomoe Gozen and how she came to wield the wonderful sword called the Golden Naginata. This book is the second in the series - a compelling story - I enjoyed being immersed in another time and another way of life.

Tomoe Gozen travels through fictional Naipon with all the inevitability of Conan in a really bad mood. Swinging two samurai swords, there is no opponent she can't out-fight, even to the point of conquering a whole army single-handed!

Dr. Weil has raised dispensing health advice to an art form. Instead of making his audience feel inadequate or guilty about bad habits, he seems to subconsciously convince readers to do better merely by presenting health facts in a non-threatening way. Healthy Aging is his most scientifically technical book yet (you'll learn all about enzymes like telomerase and cell division and the chemistry behind phytonutrients like indole-3-carbinol, and the connection between cancer and other degenerative diseases like diabetes) yet by far his most fascinating.

His main mission here is to recommend "aging gracefully," which he considers accepting the process instead of fighting it. As the director of the country's leading integrative-medicine clinic (combining the best of traditional and alternative worlds), of course he disses Botox and the slew of $100-a-jar face creams out there. It's also no surprise that he focuses on proper nutrition, moderate exercise, and meditation and rest among his "12-point program for healthy aging." (Triathletes and exercise addicts should take special note of the research linking excessive exercise and ALS, or amyotrophic lateral sclerosis.) He occasionally references his earlier works, including 8 Weeks to Optimum Health. But the most eye-opening sections are those that discuss the spirituality of aging and its emotional aspects. "Aging can bring frailty and suffering, but it can also bring depth and richness of experience, complexity of being, serenity, wisdom, and its own kind of power and grace," he writes. At 63, Weil is still a bit shy of senior status, but is aging well indeed, with the legacy of his late 93-year-old mother (who's touchingly eulogized by Weil in this book) to guide him.--Erica Jorgensen

                      Book Description

Spontaneous Healing . . . Eight Weeks to Optimum Health . . . Eating Well for Optimum Health . . . The Healthy Kitchen–in each of his widely acclaimed, best-selling books, Dr. Andrew Weil has been an authoritative and companionable guide through a uniquely effective combination of traditional and nontraditional approaches to health and healthy living. Now he gives us a book about aging that is unlike any other in the breadth and depth of its information and understanding. Hugely informative, practical, and uplifting, it is infused with the engaging candor and common sense that have been the hallmarks of all his books.

At the heart of Healthy Aging is Dr. Weil’s belief that although aging is an irreversible process, there are myriad things we can do to keep our minds and bodies in good working order through all phases of life. To that end, he draws on the new science of biogerentology (the biology of aging) as well as on the secrets of healthy longevity– diet, activity, and attitude–that he has gathered firsthand from cultures around the world.
In Part One–“The Science and Philosophy of Healthy Aging”–he explains how the body ages, and he explores the impact of gender, genes, environment, and lifestyle on an individual’s experience and perception of the process of aging. He describes the various would-be elixirs of life extension–herbs, hormones, and antiaging “medicines”–separating myth from fact and clearly delineating the difference between the spurious notions of preventing or reversing the process of aging and the real possibilities of inhibiting or delaying the onset of diseases that become more likely as we age. He writes movingly about the ways in which an acceptance of aging can be a significant part of doing it well, and of recognizing and appreciating the great rewards of growing older: depth and richness of experience, complexity of being, serenity, wisdom, and its own kind of power and grace.

In Part Two–“How to Age Gracefully”–Weil details an easy-to-implement Anti-inflammatory Diet that will protect the immune system and aid your body in resisting and adapting to the changes that time brings. And he provides extensive practical advice on exercise; preventive health care; stress management; physical, mental, and emotional flexibility; and spiritual enhancement–all of which can help you achieve and maintain the best health throughout the lifelong process of aging.

Healthy Aging–a book for people of all ages–is Andrew Weil’s most important and far-reaching book yet.

4 out of 5 stars Another interesting angle on aging and acceptance.......2007-09-14

Dr. Weil gives a straight-forward, no-nonsense take on everything from cosmetic surgery to cosmetic complusions to vitamin supplements and all the silly crap in between.

He fortifies a long-standing belief that had I've for years that if you over-power your body with supplements and vitamin-chemicals, you can actually cause much more damage than if you just ate healthy and exercised even occasionally. Many people believe that if you overdo vitamins and supplements, you simply excrete and eliminate any amount over what you can use. It's simply not true and Dr. Weil tells you why it's not true and what the real cost to your body can be.

Weil gets into the oxidant/anti-oxidant discussion (along with a number of other "now" subjects") from a place of intelligence and medical experience that can make the most ardent supporter of supplements feel downright silly. He thoughtfully attacks the "more is better" crowd and pulverizes the opposition who insist on stuffing huge quantities of fish oil, Vitamin A,B,C and K into their mouths at every turn. Can you say "overload?"

A chilling truth comes out when Weil starts detailing how you can cause damage and disease by taking that route. And his sobering tales of stupidity for people who mess with their "ph" levels is dead-on. Example in that line of thought: If your body is naturally wired to work at maintaining a neutral ph level, and it is, why in the world would you take supplements or eat certain foods to mess with it? If you eat foods or substances that claim to alter your ph levels, your body will fight to re-establish a neutral ph state. The resulting stress that you can cause your own body thinking you're doing a good thing can be deadly!

Be prepared to dust-off the old college biology textbook in a few dicussions. Weil takes us to the cellular level right through the cell membrane and into your own mitochondria. And this isn't a multi-level marketing presentation at your dinner table with the crazed neighbor who won't leave. It's human biology, physiology and common sense.

He zeroes-in on our culture's phobia toward aging gracefully and it hurts because it's so true. His anecdotes about how uncomfortable some poeple get when they're around the elderly are painful to read when he hits the proverbial nail on the head with a proclamation that many of us are uncomfortable around old people because we see how we're going to turn-out...if we live that long. Ouch!

If you're at that stage where aches and pains that you would have shrugged off at age 19 are a part of your daily routine, read this book. If your significant other is spending otherworldly amounts on "anti-aging" creams and potions, read this book. If your goal in life is too get a tummy-tuck, a eye-lid surgery or you're constantly dyeing your hair, read this book.

But only if you want to change those expensive and systematic annoyances and learn to grow old gracefully. His story about the old pine tree outside his home in Arizona will bring it right to your front door!

5 out of 5 stars Tonic for those who fear the future.......2007-08-16

Dr. Weil does an excellent service with this book - he provides his readers with reasonable goals to set as they foresee their aging years. And he evaluates a range of approaches - diet, exercise, dietary supplements - debunking some and recommending many. Add to that his personable voice (I listened to him narrate the Book on Tape version). Use this book to plan for your own future.

                      5 out of 5 stars Good Advice.......2007-08-02

The first part of the book was a little scientific, although I understand why it's in there, but I really enjoyed the 2nd half of the book. Very informative. I really appreciate how Dr. Weil doesn't say his way is the only way. There are also good resources in the back for further study. I've been looking up and reading many of the in the book list and reading them!
I'm also going to be reading Dr. Weil's other books.

                      5 out of 5 stars ex-biochemist review............2007-07-24

I currently work in the field of psychology, but I was educated as a research scientist in the area of biochemistry. Prior to that period, I was a teaching fellow in physiology and have had a strong interest in integrative medicine as well as integral psychology.

I think this is probably Dr. Weil's best book to date. The suggestions he make are very practical and wise. He also frames aging as something positive, which is unusual in our culture. I think his suggestions for supplementation are also quite good and he provides a lot of good references throughout the text.

While the book is more technical than some of his earlier works, it is also very accessible. The technical material that is presented is fascinating and relevant. For the most part, this material is related to the aging process, particularly of cells. He also talks about how turning off these normal processes relate to cancer.

I also like this book because it is well-rounded. It covers every sphere of life including exercise, diet, the need for touch, social connection and even spiritual needs. It is comprehensive, yet easy to follow and impliment. The advice seems very sound and responsible to me.

This is a great owner's manual for aging. It's a very small investment for a potentially very high return. Also, it's not a lot of hype about staying young forever and making false assertions to prey on people's fear of aging. In short, it's very well done.

5 out of 5 stars Dr. Weil actually visited some of longest lived cultures, to learn what contributes to their health.......2007-07-18

Okinawans reportedly live longer than any other culture and Dr. Weil has spent time there, observing their culture, diet and lifestyle, unlike many armchair researchers, who merely read what others publish. He contrasted the Okinawan diet, with the Japanese diet and diets and lifestyles of other longer lived cultures.

I would like to see someone examine why the counties with the longest average life span, in the United States, are high altitude areas, in Colorado, 2 counties, in Iowa and one, in Maryland. Hawaii was the state, with longest average lifespan, with Minnesota second longest. Perhaps, Dr. Weil will examine this interesting phenomenon.

Dr. Weil refocuses antiaging medicine from an obsession with cosmetics and physical appearance to a focus on actual biological health. He makes an important personal observation that all of the ALS patients he has encountered were exceptionally lean and athletic and speculates that extremely low body fat, may reduce protection from fat soluble neurotoxins.

Medically, body fat below 5 %,is very unhealthy and associated with increased cardiac risk. Anorexics have excessive dopamine neurotransmitter levels and considerably increased death risk.

Many of the people, on the covers of the muscle magazines, are less healthy, than they look. Some of these people abuse thyroid, testosterone, human growth hormone and even insulin! One of our Florida Detox patients suffered dangerously high blood pressure, apparently due to an iron overload, secondary to testosterone abuse, although he possessed an impressive physique, due to bodybuilding.

Weil focuses on healthy aging, not immortality. He discusses the lifespan limits imposed by telomeres. Much of the information found regarding reducing inflammation, protein glycation, free radical oxidation, etc., can be found in other books, but Weil provides a good comprehensive, readable discussion of most of the present knowlege, of healthy aging. Weil has an extensive knowlege of nutrition and herbal medicine.

                              Book Description

With over 939,000 copies in print, used and recommended by more than 5,500 hospitals, and now completely revised and updated, Don't Eat Your Heart Out Cookbook is the bible for anyone seeking a heart-healthy diet.

Incorporating the latest scientific and nutritional studies, lay expert Joe Piscatella outlines an effective plan for life-long heart health and explains the science behind it in plain-speaking language we all can understand.

Packed with 400 healthy, low-fat recipes-soups, salads, sandwiches, poultry, seafood, and even red meats and desserts-painstakingly developed by Joe's wife Bernie, this indispensable book is a step-by-step guide to achieving a permanent change in dietary patterns. The author provides countless tips on adapting everyday recipes, ordering judiciously in restaurants, decreasing salt and sugar intake, losing weight and keeping it off. The new edition pays special attention to women and heart disease, explains HDL and LDL cholesterol and what the numbers really mean, and discusses coronary regression, the benefits of aspirin, and lifestyle factors vs. genetics. It dispels food myths--that shrimp is a no-no, alcohol is always unhealthy, and ground turkey is better than ground beef--and shows how to make use of low-fat food products. <

5 out of 5 stars good food for the heart patient.......2003-10-30

In this cookbook designed for the heart patient, Piscatella devotes the first half to discussion of heart disease, cholesterol, unhealthy elements of American diet, and a seven-step plan to change eating habits - including reductions of fat, salt, sugar and even restaurant eating.

The second half introduces the recipes, accompanied by nutritional information, variations and serving suggestions. Recipes range from Italian vegetable soup to grilled swordfish steak, chicken curry and barbecued lamb roast. There's even a pie crust recipe. With an emphasis on herbs and judicious use of small amounts of fat, recipes are attractive as well as healthy.

I started using this book for my husband. He as a combination of bad genetics and scant will-power. The dishes are very easy to make, most of the ingredients are already in your kitchen, and best of all, they are delicious. It is very easy to follow and you can't believe you are eating so healthy because it tastes so good.

5 out of 5 stars New to Heart Healthy information? This is your book!.......2001-03-19

After my father had an emergency triple-by-pass, our entire family experienced a "wake-up call" and finally decided to start learning about our hearts and how to eat for better heart health. One by one, each of us has bought a copy of this book--it is SO well written and Mr. Piscatella explains everything so well that it makes you excited about eating healthier. He is also very realistic about what it takes to change habits you've developed over many years. The first half of the book is all of the background information you need and the second half is the cookbook portion. The recipes are a helpful way to get started in your new appraoch to cooking and eating! Do yourself a favor and get this book--and get one for others in your life who need to take better care of their heart!

I just bought this book for my husband and me, and I can't put it down. The information in the first half of the book is priceless. It goes in-depth about not only the workings of the heart and the causes of coronary heart disease, but also contains a step-by-step guide for how to change your lifestyle to prevent, control, or even reverse heart disease. The recipes in the second half are delicious and practical, if somewhat pricey. The author's focus is on presenting a practical, "do-able" approach to health, and he certainly achieves that. If you aren't buying it for yourself, buy it for your kids... their future dietary habits are determined by how they eat today. And "traces of the disease are common in American children by age 10" (p. 25). I'm buying another one for a friend.

As a practicing Family Physician, I have been recommending this Book to my patients. The book has 2 sections, the first part is an excellent resource of helpful information regarding coronary artery disease and dietary and lifestyle changes helpful in improving the health of the heart. The writing is easy to understand and backed by solid research. I would not call this a diet book so much as a Lifestyle change book based on a healthy Mediterranean approach to eating. I have tried a couple of the recipes so far and found them delicious. I highly recommend this book.

THE ROAD TO A HEALTHY HEART provides cardiac patients and their loved ones with a step-by-step guide to cooking which links culinary issues with health and heart connections, and represents a complete revision of the classic DON'T EAT YOUR HEART OUT COOKBOOK - a revision some ten years in the making. The Piscatella diet is at the heart of the matter and while 300 recipes pack ROAD TO A HEALTHY HEART, plenty of details on diet and nutrition are included too. A 'must' for any serious about health.

                              5 out of 5 stars Heart-worthy.......2006-02-28

This is the book for those looking for a sensible and doable approach to a heart-healthy lifestyle. There is plenty of detailed yet understandable information about your heart and how to treat it. The recipes provide flavor with their healthfulness. If you want a book with the facts without the fluff, this is the one to get.

1 out of 5 stars The book is nothing more than a "talking points memo" for the FDA.......2006-01-30

Very disappointed in his research. All of his studies were conducted by a government research group of somekind.

Mr. Piscatella states on page 51 that he recommends Canola Oil. Really? Is he not aware that Canola was developed from the rape seed and is thus unsuited for human consumption. Why? because it contains a long-chain fatty acid called erucic acid, which under some circumstances is associated with fibrotic heart lesions coupled with a very high sulphur content and goes rancid easily (Nourishing Traditions, 2001). Not to mention Mr. Piscatella condemns tropical oils which are high in lauric acid which are not only stable at high temperatures but has high antifungal and antimicrobial properties. Guess where lauric acid also can be found? Mother's milk and we certainly don't condemn that.........yet!

On cholesterol, he's just wrong. Or should I say the FDA is wrong. On page 21 Mr. Piscatella emphasizes the importance of LDL and HDL ratios. This is a typical FDA propaganda tool. In the book, The Cholesterol Myths by Uffe Ravnshov, MD,PhD, Mr. Ravnshov states, "LDL-cholesterol is neither centrally nor causally important, it has not the strongest and most consistent relationship to risk of CHD, it has not a direct relationship to the rate of CHD, and it has not been studied in more than a dozen randomized trials..."

Mr. Piscatella is mistaken regarding soy. He never distinguishes the difference between fermented soy products (tofu, miso) and unfermented soy products (soy milk). Asians rarely consume unfermented soy products, if at all.

One thing Mr. Piscatella is correct on is the importance of triglyceride levels and margarine and shortening products. Those products should be banned.

In my opinion, I would take this book and do almost the opposite it says and recommend the book, Nourishing Traditions, Sally Fallon/Mary Enig, Ph.D.

5 out of 5 stars Good, healthy advice in simple terms : - ).......2006-01-28

I like Joe Piscatella because he explains things in an easy to understand, clear manner. He is very health concious himself, because when he was 32, he had triple bypass surgery. He was on the tennis court on a Monday and then the Wednesday on the operating table. This completely changed him and his life and learned everything he could to help himself beat the odds.
He talks here in laymans terms to explain why we should avoid butter and use soft margarine. Why to avoid white bread and use wholewheat or multigrain instead. Why to eat fresh fish and why you can (only from time to time) fry foods if they are done in a non-stick pan with olive oil. He says that there should be no sodas because he believes that's why we are primarily overweight.
He says we think too much about foods we can't eat and don't think about those that we can eat and he says there are plenty we can eat. Beautiful coloured fruits and vegetables because they have anti oxidents and help prevent heart disease and cancers and these foods should be the center of how we eat.
Anyway, if I go on, you may not need to read this book, but I will say that apart from all the good information in here that I've mentioned, it also has really nice recipes that are easy to follow. The classic pasta salad recipe and the cranberry crisp are two that I've tried and loved. I can't wait to try more because it's showed me that there are healthy foods out there that can taste great (Now if only I could give up Coca Cola!!!). Highly recommended book.
