Book Description
On his train journey back to Scotland for a well-earned rest, Inspector Grant learns that a fellow passenger, one Charles Martin, has been found dead. It looks like a case of misadventure -- but Grant is not so sure. Teased by some enigmatic lines of verse that the deceased had apparently scrawled on a newspaper, he follows a trail to the remote Outer Hebrides. And though it is the end of his holiday, it is also the beginning of an intriguing investigation into the bizarre circumstances shrouding Charles Martin’s death…

Character study with mystery vehicle.......2006-11-18
pp. 176-7: "It was Grant's experience that it was the irrelevant, the unconsidered words in a statement that were most important." One more quote for my collection--but it's relevant to this book. Most of this "mystery" is a character study of Grant's overworked psyche. It approaches literature in the high quality of the writing. However, she uses a great many unknown-to-me British colloquialisms which can be a bit annoying. As usual, this is not a Christie-like challenge mystery where the reader has to match wits with the detective & figure out whodunnit. I found this book rather slow moving--Tey's works have a dearth of action. However, the mystery is quite clever as is Grant's method of unraveling it. The ending is not, however, a big surprise except for the means whereby Grant discovers the truth for certain. This is probably one of Tey's (i.e.Elizabeth MacKintosh a.k.a. Gordon Daviot) better books but not, IMHO as good as "Brat Farrar" or the wonderful "Daughter of Time."
Tey's 8th and final mystery novel (1952).......2005-05-26
"The beasts that talk,
the streams that stand,
the stones that walk,
the singing sand..."
- found on an unidentified corpse, herein
I enthusiastically recommend the unabridged audio recording by Stephen Thorne. He speaks beautifully; he voice-acted Aslan in the 1979 animated version of THE LION, THE WITCH, AND THE WARDROBE.
As in THE DAUGHTER OF TIME, Grant isn't in the best of health, but this time he's on sick leave for work-related stress (in the form of claustrophobia) rather than physical injury. Unable to sleep on a train journey to Scotland, Grant has the honor of being present when the laziest railway employee in captivity discovers a corpse in a neighbouring compartment, taken at first to be dead drunk rather than merely dead - therefore not only escaping without tipping, but creating more work than 'old Yoghourt' has suffered in many a year. :)
That would have been the end of it - a dead man with an unusual face - except that Grant happened to pick up a half-written sonnet in the dead man's compartment: "The beasts that talk,/The streams that stand,/The stones that walk,/The singing sand..." *That* makes a change from Grant's daily round of investigation - what *was* the stranger up to? To Grant's eye for faces is coupled his hobby of analyzing character from handwriting style. (Hey, everybody has the right to be a bit quirky.)
Even without the mystery, I'd enjoy this as a novel; Grant is, of course, in Scotland to visit his married cousin Laura whom we heard about in THE DAUGHTER OF TIME. (Personally, if I'd been Tey's editor, I'd have recommended that she make Grant's health-related trip to Scotland the same trip he was planning at the end of his hospital stay in THE DAUGHTER OF TIME, rather than coming up with an unrelated health issue in the very next book.) Grant simultaneously struggles to conquer and conceal his claustrophobia while poking into the open-and-shut case of accidental death his colleagues aren't interested in.
Fairly good mystery reading.......2003-10-06
Good story, good characterization good descriptions easy to hold onto difficult to put down.
Oh What a Wonderful Tey!.......2003-06-07
This book is definitely my favourite of the Ins. Grant series. It is truly unfortunate that Ms. Tey was taken from us so young. Just think what she would have written! This book was published posthumously after her untimely death. It is as perfect a mystery as you will ever come across. In the book Grant is going on a holiday. On the train that he has taken to go to Scotland to visit friends, a young man is found dead in his room. It truly looked like misadventure, but something about it disturbed Grant and got him searching a trail that took him to the Hebrides, back to London, and to Marseilles. And what actually got him going on this impossible search were a few lines of poetry scrawled on a newspaper that the young victim had had with him before he died. Wonderful story!
It may take some time to appreciate.......2002-04-10
The concept behind Tey's *The Singing Sands* immediately drew me in. A bit of poetry written on a newspaper leads the inspector to solve a crime that only he believes is indeed actually a crime. Yes, very interesting. However, once I started reading I found the pacing a little slow. Grant was far more introspective, more concerned with his own fears, than most mystery protagonists. Which was not, by any means, a bad thing. I just had to adjust my mindset a bit. Once I realized that this was not to be a typical solve it and feel good mystery, I found myself sinking in, slowly. Admittedly, it took me a couple of days after finishing the novel to appreciate it, to find it a satisfying read. But one thing has definitely come from reading *The Singing Sands*--I'm now looking forward to reading more Josephine Tey novels.

Something is killing grazing animals . . . and has begun to attack humans as well, leaving nothing but the bones of its victims behind.Hosteen, aided by his telepathically linked animals, knows that if he can't stop the killings Arzor will be decimated. His only ally is a young woman who has beast master ability, but was raised to mistrust others with such a power. At stake is the safety of all those on Arzor, and on other colony planets as well. Because Death-Which-Comes-in-the-Night is a scourge that if not stopped here, could spread . . .

A wonderful continuation.......2007-07-30
This is a wonderful continuation of the Beast Master series, and I hope to see more works by the young writer who helped Andre Norton on this and Beast Master's Circus (Hosteen Storm/Beastmaster, Bk. 4). I loved the strong woman character who ended up being a suitable counter for Hosteen Storm.
Read them all, in order.
Problems with Creepy-crawlies.......2006-08-24
Beast Master's Ark (2002) is the third SF novel in the Beast Master series, following Lord of Thunder. In this novel, the Arkship is trying to collect genes from every available Terran species. This collection started with unauthorized samples of species used by the Beast Master Command and expanded to include all Terran species. After the flaming of Terra by the Xiks, the Ark became an official instrument of the High Command.
Tani is the niece of Brion and Kady Carraldo, the couple running the Ark. She is the daughter of a Beast Master who died with his whole team on Trastor. Tani's mother went a little crazy after his death and she has told Tani that the High Command deliberately sent her father on a suicide mission. She also tells Tani that most Beast Masters send their beasts into combat without regard for their safety. Then her mother is killed by Xiks on Terra.
Tani has been working on the Ark for her aunt and uncle as a biogenetic technician, collecting gene samples and splicing gene sequences for various species. She is a good worker, but she still has an attitude toward Beast Masters. When an effort to obtain samples from one team on Fremlyn was mishandled and a beast died, Tani blamed the Beast Master rather than her uncle.
With this attitude of disdain and distrust for beast masters, Tani comes to Arzor to collect samples from the team of Hosteen Storm. While Hosteen had been scheduled to greet the Ark crew, a local rancher reports that something is killing his frawn and asks for help from the Beast Master and his team. Hosteen finds evidence of something eating both animals and men down to the skeleton. The natives are also suffering from its hunger and are totally mystified.
When he is not present at their arrival, Tani decides that Storm is being rude toward her aunt and uncle. However, she learns to like Brad Quade, Hosteen's stepfather. After Storm arrives and encounters Mandy, the paraowl, Tani reacts defensively and abruptly asks his business. Then she foists him off to Jarro, an unimaginative prig, who snubs the Beast Master and sends him on his way.
Although Tani continues to see Storm as an arrogant and self-centered man, Hosteen learns more about her and begins to treat her as a victim of war trauma. When the mobile lab vehicle arrives at the Quade ranch, Tani relaxes her defenses and spends much time with Logan Quade, Hosteen's half-brother. They go for long rides and Logan tells her about the Norbies and other aspects of Arzor.
Then Tani starts to have trouble sleeping. When her aunt gives her something to help her sleep, she has a full-blown nightmare. From her description, Hosteen suspects that she is picking up the feelings of both the victim and its killer.
Tani grows tired of being confined to bed and decides to go for a ride. She sees a young duocorn-bred filly in the corral and makes friends with the animal. The filly is entranced by the young women who displays no trace of fear. Tani presents the riding tack to the filly and then saddles her. Although the filly is slightly startled as Tani leaps into the saddle, Tani is a good rider and the filly is soon satisfied. They walk out of the corral and they speed up a little. Finally, Tani lets out a war whoop and they take off into the brush.
Tani, the filly, her coyotes and Mandy enjoy the ride and the subsequent meal. However, Tani drops off to sleep and wakes up too late to ride back; she doesn't want to chance riding the filly at night for fear of hidden holes and obstacles. They settle down for the night. The next day four Nitra warriors appear and Tani welcomes them to her camp.
No one has told Tani about the Nitras. Since she has been told that the natives are friendly, she treats them as such. They are impressed with her lack of fear and her respect for tradition; the leader tells the others to treat her with full courtesy. One young warrior, however, tries to ride the filly without permission and the filly kills him for his arrogance. The Nitra leader accepts the death as justified for the defiance of his orders and he invites Tani to accompany them back to his camp.
This novel is an action adventure, but is also a romance. Despite the poor start, Tani and Hosteen gradually develop a deep affection for each other. Of course, both doubt that the other reciprocates such feelings, but the intimate mental linkages soon resolve such doubts.
Highly recommended for Norton fans and for anyone else who enjoys tales of high adventure, alien cultures and romance.

Beast Master's Ark.......2004-08-18
When I first saw the advertisement for this book, I was skeptical as to it's quality. When I picked it up and actually started reading it, I didn't want to stop reading. It was that good.I also enjoyed Beast Master's Circus also written by Andre Norton. You can't read one with out reading the other.
Teamwork, both with Animals and Co-Authors, Sometimes Works.......2004-07-13
The first two volumes in this set, The Beast Master and Lord of Thunder, are some of the best of Norton's science fictional work. So it was with some trepidation that I picked up this sequel, written with a co-author and many years after the original two, as my experience with this type of thing has not been good. I was pleasantly surprised.
The story picks up almost immediately after the events of Lord of Thunder, with Hosteen, Brad, Logan, and Dumaroy still much in evidence. A new major character, Tani, is introduced, child of another Beast Master, but mainly raised by her gene-scientist aunt and uncle. Her father was killed during the Xik war, and her mother, believing his death was a product of high command malfeasance and most beast master's attitude of treating their teams merely as tools, inculcated in Tani a belief that beast masters were not good people and that animals should never be used for war purposes.
The Ark, a gene bank of just about every Terran species, was put together during the war as a fail safe to ensure that life forms were not permanently lost. Tani and her aunt and uncle bring the Ark to Azor, both to collect new gene specimens and to possibly create mates for Hosteen's animal team. But on Azor, a strange set of killings, both of animal life and Norbie/humans, has started to occur, seemingly originating out of the Deep Blue, causing some Nitra tribes to move into the area around Hosteen's ranch. This sets the stage for Tani to become deeply involved in the Norbie tribal culture, and for her to find and use her own beast master talents to combat the threat.
Tani is a well realized character, with enough background to allow understanding of her feelings and positions, who changes during the course of the action in a believable manner. Hosteen also shows some development, to a mature man who knows at least some of what he wants out of life. The plot is comparatively simple, but there are certainly enough thrill points and dramatic moments to hold your attention, and it is not just another re-hash of plot lines Norton has used many times in the past.
Thematically this work does not tread much new or deep ground. Those familiar with Norton's work will certainly recognize her themes of the sacredness of life balanced by practical necessity, of the need for honesty and the room to be distinct individuals, of the value of cultural heritage, of respecting the beliefs of others, and the sometime power of belief in the unseen. This is not necessarily bad, as profoundness of philosophical thought in this work would have worked against its basic nature of being an adventure tale, and the level provided still gives enough food for thought to be useful.
The ending was perhaps a little too pat, with certain relationships easily predictable, and the primary mystery's resolution too easy given the earlier books in this series background. Also, I found myself missing any real involvement of the ancient vanished alien race that created the Sealed Caves that was so prominent in the first two books.
Not as strong as the first two books in the set, but a very nice addition, and has helped restore my faith in sequels written with co-authors.

Disappointing.......2003-11-29
Some of the continuations of Andre Norton's worlds have been gems, and some of them have been disappointments. Beast Master's Ark is the worst to date. The original Beast Master was one of my favorite books, with Norton's classic complexity of phrase, her textured and troubled main character, and her believable yet alien world. This sequel has simplistic language, startling to someone expecting Norton's turn of phrase, and no plot to speak of. The story never generates tension, and there is no climax. McConchie does a great job with characterization, but good characters are not enough. There must be some story. To add insult to injury, there are multiple typos, and some editing mistakes like tense switching that add to the general sense of a book that is not well written. I am sorry that Andre Norton put her name to this one.

Book Description
When Judith Herman's Trauma and Recovery was first published five years ago, it was hailed as a groundbreaking work. In the intervening years, Herman's now classic volume has changed the way we think about and treat traumatic events and trauma victims. In a new introduction, Herman chronicles the incredible response the book has elicited and explains how the issues surrounding the topic of trauma and recovery have shifted within the clinical community and the culture at large. Trauma and Recovery brings a new level of understanding to a set of problems usually considered individually. Herman draws on her own cutting-edge research on domestic violence, as well as on a vast literature of combat veterans and victims of political terror, to show the parallels between private terrors such as rape and public traumas such as terrorism. The book puts individual experience in a broader political frame, arguing that psychological trauma can be understood only in a social context. Meticulously documented and frequently using the victims own words as well as those from classic literary works and prison diaries, Trauma and Recovery is a powerful work that will continue to profoundly impact our thinking.

An excellent foundation book.......2007-08-10
This book has been around for a while (first published in 1992), but it's still an excellent resource for understanding trauma. I believe that reading Trauma and Recovery will be helpful to trauma victims, although it does not cover current treatments such as EMDR, Somatic Experiencing (SE), and Energy Psychology (EP). --Fred P. Gallo, PhD, author of Energy Tapping for Trauma: Rapid Relief from Post-Traumatic Stress Using Energy Psychology
Trauma and Recovery: The Aftermath of Violence--from Domestic Abuse to Political Terror.......2007-04-05
Judith Herman has done an incredible service to all mankind with this book.
This book is a must for women who have been victims of abuse and trauma.
Her amazing ability to understand and articulate trauma is nothing short of empowering!
Toss out the rest and stick with the best.......2007-03-29
I've read lots of books about trauma but this, by far, is the best I've found. It is written with great compassion and without bias. This is a well written clinical analysis of trauma in all it's forms and the recovery process which follows. I highly recommend.
Enlightening.......2007-02-20
This book was a suggested read from a counselor/pastor, and I'm glad I did. The author offers the reader an enlightening description and understanding of Complex PTSD. It is a great educational tool. It was exactly what was needed at the time. It can also be a good "first step" item. It helped pinpoint the issue and explain the authour's theories on addressing the issue. It set a great course to also find appropriate assistance. Armed with a name, understanding, and appropriate language the enlightened reader can pursue even more education and professional assistance if needed. This book turned out to be a light in a very dark place and I have already recommended it to others.
Cause and Effect.......2007-02-18
Dr. herman looks at the molestations of people and describes the affects, both long term and short term, with a look at the recovery process. The atrocities are detailed. This book is very conclusive, scientific in its approach.

Book Description
For the legions of harried moms who have tossed in the dishtowel on cooking healthy meals (or any meals!), the easiest-ever guide for bringing super nutrition back to the kitchen.
Getting dinner on the table night after night can be a challenge. So it’s no surprise that busy moms often rely on fast food, takeout, and convenience meals like macaroni & cheese, chicken nuggets, and fries. The kids love it but the drawback is that little twinge of guilt moms feel every time they feed their family another not-so-healthy meal. At the end of the day, many children end up with a poor diet high in sugar, saturated fat, and calories … a major factor in the rising rates of obesity.
Finally, here are realistic guidelines designed to give families a healthy meal makeover.
The Moms lay out a 5-Step Meal Makeover Plan, explaining how to market good nutrition to kids, establish food rules, and make life easier in the kitchen.
In The Best of the Bunch chapter they reveal which brands of kid convenience foods–hot dogs, frozen pizza, and more–are the best tasting and most nutritious ones out there.
The Moms show how to stock a healthy pantry and whip up delicious anytime meals using pantry staples.
They even serve up 120 reworked recipes for family favorites such as Fast-as-Boxed Macaroni & Cheese, Squishy Squash Lasagna, Cheesy Broccoli Soup, Sweet Potato Fries, and Chocolate Pudding with Toppers.
Customer Reviews:
I love this book!.......2007-05-29
I have had the hardest time trying to get my family to eat healthier (until now). My son is horribly picky and my husband doesn't want to eat "diet food". This cookbook has made everyone happy. We have liked almost every recipe we've tried so far. I feel so much better now that I can fix them healthier meals without them feeling like they are being punished :)
Not just for families with young children.......2007-03-16
As a nutritionist, I recommend this book to families who want to eat healthier, but wouldn't feel comfortable at the local health food store buying groceries. I also recommend this book to older adults who due to blood pressure, diabetes, or heart disease find themselves needing to change their diets to be more healthful, but have always eaten a traditional meat-potatoes-vegetable meal. These recipes are great for taking recognizable food favorites and making them tasty and more heathful. I particularly love the oatmeal chocolate chip cookie recipe.
What's Not To Love?.......2007-03-03
There is so much to love about this book, it's hard to know where to begin. As a working mother with two children (aged 7 and 13) I am too often tempted to lower my standards for healthy eating just to save time. This book has helped me to maintain -- and raise! -- my standards. The individual recipes are fabulous, and many have become ones that I turn to time and time again. The Have It Your Way Tacos are delicious and easy to prepare, and the spice mixture for flavoring the meat means I will never again buy the high-sodium store-bought taco seasoning mix. The Blueberry Banana Pancakes have become my children's favorite way to begin a weekend or school vacation. The Ham and Cheese Pinwheels are great for home eating, or for bringing to potluck dinners and work luncheons. I always thought I'd come up with the world's greatest roasted chicken until I tried the "Mom The House Smells Great" Roasted Chicken recipe! I also adore the Best of the Bunch section, which really helps me evaluate the "all natural" claims on so many labels. The nutritional information throughout the book is an invaluable resource. I have consulted the index to find out how much calcium my daughter should be getting, whether I should believe the hype about flax seed, and what the difference is among the various kinds of fats. This book has more than earned its treasured spot in my kitchen, and it is a favorite gift for friends and family! And, the authors' website has added even more treasures to my cooking, including an Oatmeal Power Breakfast that I eat most mornings. Bravo!
Where have these recipes been all my life..............2007-03-02
I recently discovered the Mom's Guide to Meal Makeovers and absolutely fell in love with the recipes. The Easy Enchilada Bake is my favorite. I have served it to friends and family to rave reviews. The best part is that it is so healthy and good for you too. The walnut crusted salmon is also delicious. I have never liked salmon as it is too strong, but prepared this way, it's fantastic.
Looking forward to a sequel!!
Tasteless food, good information.......2007-02-15
I checked this book out from the library with high hopes of finding new, healthy and tasteful recipes for my family of 5. I have prepared 12 of the dishes and there hasn't been one that I would repeat. I will say that we have eaten most of the dishes, but they are very tasteless and not worth preparing again. The 2 stars are given because of the general information in the book. Definitely get this book from the library before buying. Not worth the purchase if you buy.
Customer Reviews:
Just a little dated........2006-12-31
The recipes are certainly easy enough. But with all the emphasis on precision--a few seconds either way can spoil a dish--its a shame that none of the three basic, recommended Corningware utensils are currently available. I'm sure something can be substituted but we're not off to a good start, here.
Microwave Cooking for One by Marie T. Smith.......2006-08-30
This book has not been updated for the new microwave ovens of today. Although the recipes are satisfactory the cooking times can't be used. The food would be cooked into a brick. Needless to say, this book should be rewritten.
Life changing!.......2006-08-29
Marie Smith's groundbreaking cookbook will surely win the heart of many a white supremacist, serial killer or secret Al Qaeda cell member too stupid to realize there's a whole grocery section of meals that are a) microwave-ready and b) portioned for one, and only one, psychotic loner.
Really a great help.......2005-09-14
As an elderly gentleman who lives by himself in a condo I found this book very helpful in planning my daily meals.
Since owning this book my microwave does more than just heat up left overs. And this was essentially the purpose of this purchase.
A Great Cookbook!.......2003-06-14
If you are single, this cookbook is a must for you. The recipes are easy to prepare and don't require any fancy ingredients. Most of them are recipes you wouldn't mind serving to a guest either, and doubling the ingredients for such a purpose is easy. I had no idea my microwave could do so much!

Book review.......2000-10-30
This book is geared towards small households that rely on the microwave for preparing convenient meals. Of course, larger households can also make use of this tome whenever they need to cook in small batches.
A six-page first chapter deals with tips and techniques. Here you will find information on microwavable utensils, shopping and storage. The rest of the chapters are about hearty main dishes, minimain dishes, side dishes, and snacks and sweets.
One of the positive points of this book is that the ingredients for the recipes are listed in separate columns (for one and two servings) in order to avoid confusing the novice cook. I also find helpful the fact that the charts include information on power level setting, procedure and time although I miss the one regarding nutritional values. The illustrations in full color are a plus too.
