Book Description

The fourth book in the popular Elm Creek Quilts series explores a question that has long captured the imagination of quilters and historians alike: Did stationmasters of the Underground Railroad use quilts to signal to fugitive slaves?

In her first novel, The Quilter's Apprentice, Jennifer Chiaverini wove quilting lore with tales from the World War II home front. Now, following Round Robin and The Cross-Country Quilters, Chiaverini revisits the legends of Elm Creek Manor, as Sylvia Compson discovers evidence of her ancestors' courageous involvement in the Underground Railroad.

Alerted to the possibility that her family had ties to the slaveholding South, Sylvia scours her attic and finds three quilts and a memoir written by Gerda, the spinster sister of clan patriarch Hans Bergstrom. The memoir describes the founding of Elm Creek Manor and how, using quilts as markers, Hans, his wife, Anneke, and Gerda came to beckon fugitive slaves to safety within its walls. When a runaway named Joanna arrives from a South Carolina plantation pregnant with her master's child, the Bergstroms shelter her through a long, dangerous winter -- imagining neither the impact of her presence nor the betrayal that awaits them.

The memoir raises new questions for every one it answers, leading Sylvia ever deeper into the tangle of the Bergstrom legacy. Aided by the Elm Creek Quilters, as well as by descendants of others named in Gerda's tale, Sylvia dares to face the demons of her family's past and at the same time reaffirm her own moral center. A spellbinding fugue on the mysteries of heritage, The Runaway Quilt unfolds with all the drama and suspense of a classic in the making.

5 out of 5 stars The Runaway Quilt.......2007-09-22

The Runaway Quilt: An Elm Creek Quilts Novelis well written with characters you care about. In addition, it provides a history lesson about the underground railroad that is anything but boring.

5 out of 5 stars Awesome.......2007-07-26

I thought this book was the best one so far in the series. If you have never read any of the Elm Creek Quilt books, then be sure to start at the beginning with The Quilter's Apprentice.

Great book.....a must read for those who are into quilts and good stories!!

5 out of 5 stars I love this book.......2007-01-15

I have read the three first books in this series. I loved them and was eager to read this one too. This book has answered some questions I had about Anneke and Gerda. The history about the Underground Railroad was interesting and it was facinating to see how it impacted the family.

5 out of 5 stars The Runaway Quilt.......2006-07-18

Jennifer Chiaverini is amazing. This book was yet another that I couldn't put down. Who knew that an author could be so talented as to write novels based on quilting that would be so riveting? Jennifer Chiaverini is now one of my favorite authors because she mixes two of my favorite things (reading and quilting) so well!

Free the slaves from the alien Alpha overlords. Rise up, with spaceships. That sort of thing.

Rose Rico has managed to pull together enough of an effective force
to do something about the situation for the maligned and put-upon
throughout the galaxy.

About as unlikely a leader type as you coulud imagine, to begin with.

4 out of 5 stars Consistant with the first two in series.......2005-07-10

If you liked the first two books in this series then this book should please you. The quality of writing and the characters are very consistant. That said I was more interested in the characters and the cultures they were from than the military and battle encounters. I also still felt that too many characters and too many cultures were being juggled for me to truly get into any of them. The result is that I know the lead female character is Rose but I didn't feel like I really got to know her over the course of three books.

5 out of 5 stars Slavery As Experienced By Slaves.......2007-01-09

Amazing book. I've never read one like it. Quite interesting. Honest experiences. An eye-opener. Anyone interested in history will enjoy this. I am.

5 out of 5 stars A wonderful historical collection.......2003-07-02

In this beautiful, historical collection of slave narratives and photographs, we are given a look inside the lives of actual slaves being interviewed as part of a project conducted by the Works Progress Administration. With more than forty interviews, UNCHAINED MEMORIES is a work of art that provides a well-rounded look at the lives of slaves. It includes insight into their living conditions, thoughts about slavery, their families and even the details of actual slave auctions. It is a sometimes sad collection, but much needed to help us understand the progress our ancestors have made in the world.

Through their accounts, we are able to see the pain and suffering as well as the spirit and pride of those born into slavery, learn from it, and pass it along to our children. This is a wonderful resource for not only African American families, but for anyone interested in history and the period of slavery and its impact upon the African American race. It is compiled with the grace and dignity deserving of a people who have been through so much!

3 out of 5 stars Sickening true stories of depravity.......2003-06-29

This book is hard to read. It is hard to wade through the cruelty.

There are stories here of families being split apart by an uncaring master class. Children were callously sold and permanently separated from their parents. Husbands and wives were similarly split up.

Frankly, it makes you sick.

Then there are the stories of brutality. Again it makes you sick. How could the slave owners have sunk so low?

If you are looking for well written stories that bring the institution of slavery to life for you, this is not the book. What you get here are very short and very simple reports by individuals. There's nothing here that you didn't know already. This is not a great work of literature.

This is just a punch right in the nose to make you wonder how slave owners could have been so cruel.

5 out of 5 stars A Beautiful Book.......2003-02-26

"...Oh freedom, Oh freedom, Oh freedom over me. And before I'll be a slave, I'll be buried in my grave and go home to my Lord and be free"
__Old Negro Spiritual

The words of the spiritual above must not have been uttered to these beautiful human beings who have graciously allowed interviewers from the 1930's Governments Works Progress Administration to chronicle their life stories. For if the words above had been uttered, the slave experience, from an intimate and painful point of view, would never have received the credence they due. Tales of slavery are still passed down from generation to generation, and traditions still are followed but to see a book like Unchained Memories is special. Quite simply, this is a beautiful book. I'm so thrilled to have been given the opportunity to read it and experience it and learn from it. I can treat the book as a textbook, a factual accounting of the lives of former slaves who have wonderful stories that they don't mind sharing with the world. For that reason alone, this book has earned a permanent place on my coffee table, for all who enter into my house to experience. Something about the actual words of former slaves bound in book form validates an agonizing time in American History.

Unchained Memories is well researched and magnificently laid out. At the beginning of every chapter is an introductory text that accounts for the tenure of the time, followed by a poignant quote and then brief narratives begin. My one regret is that the narratives are so short, when biographers obviously spent a great deal of time with these people. I am grateful that there is an extensive bibliography at the back so that I can, at some point, go and read the entire account by the former slave. Oh where will I find the time? If you read this book, I would highly suggest that you get a copy of the HBO documentary of the same name and watch it as well. There is nothing like "hearing" the words spoken by African American actors of today in the vernacular of the time.

I'm glad that Unchained Memories was published, and quite fittingly made its debut during Black History Month. These former slaves are the reason why Black History Month is perpetuated now and a fitting tribute for remembering from whence we as a nation have come.

5 out of 5 stars Exceptional bridging of history and experience.......2003-02-16

An exquisite pictorial and narrative exploration of the institution of American slavery, this book provides readers with the opportunity to experience from personal recollections what it was like to live under conditions of slavery. The text format, an artistic balance of photographs and primary sources, is composed of interviews with former slaves conducted in the 1930s by the Federal Writers' Project. Each chapter focuses on a particular aspect of slave life - auctions, work, family, special occasions, providing a deeply etched portrait of hardships and abuses as well as examples of strength of character and quiet dignity. A worthy addition to one's library!

Bill Phillips had been publishing bodybuilding magazines and marketing nutritional supplements for years when he had a weird revelation at a trade show: many of the most loyal and enthusiastic readers he had were totally out of shape. From that uncomfortable realization came his popular Physique Transformation Contest (top prize that first year: Phillips's own Lamborghini), now world famous, and this book.

The three-times-a-week weightlifting program in Body for Life is deceptively simple. If you've spent any time in the gym, you've already done all the exercises. But Phillips includes a couple of high-intensity sets at the end of each exercise that should compound the training effect on each muscle group. Same goes for the cardiovascular exercise he recommends: just 20 minutes, three times a week. But those 20 minutes are spent jacking the intensity up and down, accomplishing more in less time.

Phillips arranges all this into a 12-week program, along with nutritional and motivational tips. Be warned that the nutritional advice gets a little spacey. For example, he puts "carbohydrates" and "vegetables" into separate categories, and recommends three daily doses of a nutritional supplement called Myoplex, which his company manufactures. (Fortunately, he gives tips on how to make each dose taste different, such as by adding drops of peppermint extract.) Despite this strangeness, Body for Life still motivates because so many others have achieved astounding results in similar 12-week windows, and the pictures and testimonials are here as evidence. --Lou Schuler

Amazon.com Audiobook Review

Bill Phillips is many things to the people who listen to this audiotape: personal trainer, motivational guru, nutrition consultant, personal-success coach. As he reads his bestselling book, he inspires, cajoles, instructs, and sometimes gives listeners a kick in the gluteals. The goal is for the listener to transform his or her body in 12 weeks, and in the process learn that changing one's physique can help one make other changes. The audiobook is spiced up with the comments and testimonials of those who've already done it. The effect is something like an infomercial, except that you've already bought the product, and you don't have to listen to a hired audience clapping. If you follow Phillips' program, you're your own audience. And, if you like your performance, the applause is what you feel inside. (Running time: 2 hours, 2 cassettes) --Lou Schuler

Excellent, excellent plan for those who want to lose weight and transform their bodies; difficult, and so the more people you recruit to do with you, the better. I bought this book for 6 people, and we all started together. It has a very nice nutrition plan; weight-lifting regimen that the novice can start yet equally challenging for those that have lifted for years. Highly recommend this 12 week program if you really want to transform.

5 out of 5 stars My review........2007-09-28

Applying the principles of this book resulted in, easily, the greatest life changing experience of my entire life. The book is an easy read, and the principles are easy to follow. The principles of the program, by the way, may seem strange, but follow them to the letter, they work remarkably well. The results will amaze you and everyone else that knows you.

5 out of 5 stars Good book with great insight.......2007-09-04

I workout a good bit, and this book helps you keep up with your routine. Phillips is a master at putting things simply and setting goals.

4 out of 5 stars Great exercise plan.......2007-08-23

Book was well written and easy to understand. Exercise plan is great and easy to keep up with. I don't totally agree with the eating plan, just a little carby for me. I am pairing the exercise plan with the Protien Power eating plan and it is working well for me. I am about 1/3 of the way through my first 12 week challange and am really starting to see some lean muscles popping out. :)

5 out of 5 stars The Real Deal.......2007-08-04

This is the Real Deal, no BS weight loss promises like no working out and eat all the food you want and still lose weight junk. He tells it like it is that you don't get the body you want by sitting around, you need to start working out and eating right. He has a fitness plan set up for you as well as menu's with recipes. Also buy his Eating For life book, some GREAT recipes in there let me tell you. He has a website you can also go to and get information and tips from too. Great book. No gimmicks, eat healthy foods, exercise, High intensity workouts lasting 20 mins cardio and then strength training by RPEs

4 out of 5 stars Companion book to "Body for Life".......2007-08-14

Regardless of whether you've gotten the men's or women's version of "Body for Life", you now need a way to keep track of your progress and boost your morale. This book lets you track your weight lifting achievements, your cardio, track all those caloric indulgences but then gives you a success story as told by real people. It even includes the folks that needed more than 12 weeks to get to healthy and fit. Without the tracking, you can't tell where you were or where you're going. I don't give it 5 stars only because I'm personally annoyed by the "mindset" exercises. Others tell me that it helps. Whatever.

5 out of 5 stars Great "Helping Hand".......2007-05-30

I am so glad I bought this book. It gives me a place to chart my progress with detailed plans for eating and exercising. It also has great daily inspirations and stories. I wouldn't be so successful on my Body for Life Journey without it!

I strongly recommend these books (Body for Life and the Body for Life Journal). I was one that never finished an exercise program. I would join a gym with all good intentions, but never went. These books give you all the information you need to succeed. I found that following his routines gave me the direction I needed and I began to feel great about myself. The program is easy to follow. I go to the gym now (can do from home) religiously. Body for Life also offers an 800 number and a web-site (listed it the book) for any questions or for program clairification.
Don't forget to take your before picture and join the challenge. GOOD LUCK!

          Book Description

There were, and still are, great restaurants all over Europe, but the greater part of Blue Trout and Black Truffles is devoted to the eating-places and vineyards of France. It is a vicarious experience less enjoyable only than the real thing to read in the pages of this book of the culinary wonders of the notable establishments that have become the last epicurean haven in this materialistic, mechanized world of fast-food chains and frozen-food dinners.

Mr. Wechsberg practiced the art of dining and wining in the greatest of Europe's gastronomic sancta sanctora and proved himself a master. He reaches back to the twilight days of the Habsburg monarchy, when those splendid monuments to the haute cuisine in central Europe, Meissl and Schadn of Vienna and Gundel's of Budapest, were in their prime. At Meissl and Schadn twenty-four varieties of boiled beef could be ordered, and in Vienna a person who couldn't talk learnedly about at least a dozen different cuts of boiled beef was "beyond the pale"-no matter what titles had been conferred on him by the Kaiser.

Almost every chapter in this heart-and-stomach-warming book takes the reader to a place that is worth a special journey-a place where he can savor the great art of graceful living.

          5 out of 5 stars A Facinating History.......2006-11-07

Though Blue Trout and Black Truffles is billed as Culinary journey, and it is at that, it is also something completely unexpected, an introduction to European life in the 1920s through 1940s. The exploration of food and wine is coupled with vibrant characters and unforgettable settings.

          5 out of 5 stars Fun! Fun!.......2004-05-17

What a romp in the world of food! You'll feel satisfied at the end of the book... like a good meal.

5 out of 5 stars Evocative and beautifully written.......2003-11-14

Wechsberg's name ought to be mentioned alongside M.F.K. Fischer's. His writing is evocative, precise, and vivid. Reading this book makes me wish I could board a time machine and eat in the restaurants he described in the 1950s. Like many Viennese, Wechsberg loves the old city, the city that vanished after the wars, and resurrects it in memory.

5 out of 5 stars Classic enjoyable gastronomic essays and interviews.......1998-12-16

Wechsberg's book is an established classic on a par with those of A. J. Liebling and Waverly Root. Like those other authors, Wechsberg was a journalist who wrote about food, restaurants, and food cultures in the mid-20th century, and his insights and great storytelling give the writing a permanent appeal. This can be seen from the reaction after this essay collection (whose chapters were originally written as magazine articles) appeared in this reprint edition in the mid-1980s. I was at a Christmas party with some accomplished food folks, including Paul Bertolli of the Chez Panisse in Berkeley, and was recounting to someone one of the stories ("Tafelspitz for the Hofrat") from this book. When I finished I found that most of the room was listening, and that many of them, independently, had recently read the book too. That particular essay, by the way, has lately been re-discovered in Vienna, where it was set, and has been proudly adopted by some restaurants there. In this book Wechsberg interviewed, and popularized to US readers, the legendary Fernand Point, chef and owner of the 20th-century's most famous and influential restaurant in France (and for whom the _Guide Michelin_ reportedly debated adding a fourth star to their rating system for premium restaruants). Some of the chapters are interviews, some experiences and some celebrations of food. This book is well known and indispensable to food fanatics and those seeking more of the background and context from which contemporary western culinary culture -- high cuisine as well as comfort food -- emerged.
