A love token.......2006-03-11
The tenancy of a substantial house near the Abbey of St.Peter and St.Paul in Shrewsbury, has been given to the Abbey by it's owner, young widow, Judith, who asks in return that a token, single, white rose should be given to her each year, on the feast day of St.Winifred. This is purely a sentimental gesture on her part as the married years that she spent in the house were so happy that she wanted to be reminded of them. The present tenant, Niall Bronzesmith, a widower with a small child, finds the rose bush chopped up in an attempt to kill it, but manages to rescue the main portion of it. Unfortunately, the murdered body of a young monk from the Abbey is found next to the bush, evidently having died in its defence. Two days before the rose rent is due, Judith is kidnapped, forcing Sheriff Hugh Beringar to send his men and the townsfolk scouring the buildings and outbuildings of the town in search of her. That same day, the body of a young man who is employed as a weaver, by Judith, is found on the bank of the river with the mark of a blow to his head. Brother Cadfael, who has taken a very keen interest in all of these doings, takes a wax inpression of a heel mark, left in the rose garden, and is trying to tie together all of the clues available to help to resolve all of these connected incidents. Again, the mystery is easy to solve for the reader but the surroundings, the customs of the age and the very people themselves, make this a very pleasurable read, especially for one who is as hooked on Cadfael stories as I am.
Another Nifty Cadfael Tale.......2003-08-21
THE ROSE RENT is the thirteenth book in the Brother Cadfael series. As such, it is much like the others in a general way. That is, the mystery isn't difficult to see through, so you'll probably have figured out "whodunit" before the solution is entirely revealed, and twelfth century living conditions are probably a bit idealized. On the other hand, the historical events are "right on", the prose is elegant, and the characterization is outstanding. Indeed, for those who have read most, or all, of the preceeding books in the series, Brother Cadfael and the other Shrewsbury regulars are like old friends.
The Brother Cadfael mysteries aren't (in my opinion, at least) the most intricate or baffling of mysteries, but they work so well on other levels that they're a pleasure to read just the same. An editorial quote on the back cover of THE ROSE RENT mentions the "lively characterization" and "graceful, literate prose". I think that sums these books up pretty well. I have read them all up through this one and I plan on reading the rest, so it's safe to conclude I'm enjoying them. I recommend this one along with all the others. I also recommend reading them more or less in order from the beginning, as later books sometimes refer to earlier ones and personal histories build from book to book.

A peppercorn rent paid in roses.......2003-01-28
If you're interested in an audio edition, check that you're getting the unabridged recording narrated by Stephen Thorne. If you're interested in the Derek Jacobi video, I warn you that the BBC rewrote the backstory of both Judith and Niall to make them more melodramatic; as compensation, they came up with one additional clever ploy on the part of the murderer that's worth seeing.
This May of 1142, spring has begun late; winter's prolonged grip has been reflected in human affairs. King Stephen, freed by a prisoner exchange after _The Pilgrim of Hate_, raised the Empress' hopes by falling ill, but her move to Oxford was premature; he's now in fine fettle, picking off the empress' outposts. While these events, and the war at large, have little effect on this story, they'll be relevant in the next book, _The Hermit of Eyton Forest_. Cadfael's worries are more immediate, but easing now that the crops have finally been sown and it looks as though the roses will be out by the 22nd of June, the feast of St. Winifred's translation.
The Widow Perle - 25-year-old Judith Vestier that was - lost her husband to a terrible fever four years ago, despite everything Cadfael could do, then lost her only child in miscarriage shortly thereafter. In the depths of her grief, she couldn't bear to stay in the house where they'd been happy, so she deeded the place to the abbey in exchange for an annual rent of one white rose from her favorite rosebush, to be paid into her hand each June 22nd. (As heiress to the Vestier clothier business, Judith has ample property even without the house; she moved in 'over her shop', as it were, with her widowed aunt and her cousin Miles.)
Since it pays for the lighting of Mary's altar all year around, brother Eluric - the altar's custodian - has always delivered the rent, but this year brings a small crisis. Eluric, given as an oblate to the abbey as a young child, grew up in the cloister; his annual meetings with Judith have been his first prolonged exposure to any woman. Despite his overly sensitive conscience, the inevitable happened, and he's asked Radulfus to relieve him of the duty since he can't help worshipping Judith from afar. Radulfus, not wanting to embarrass the boy publicly or to have a repetition in a few years' time, consults Cadfael and Anselm; Cadfael suggests that the abbey's tenant, Niall Bronzesmith, deliver the rent directly. After all, he's a widower and a decent man...
Unfortunately, other men of Shrewsbury aren't as innocent as Eluric or as decent as Niall, and seek Judith's hand in marriage for mercenary purposes. Godfrey Fuller, whose business complements Judith's very well, proposes marriage as a business proposition. Her chief weaver, Bertred, has an eye out for advancement. Even ne'er-do-well Vivian Hynde is trying to turn his charm into a soft spot for life. Small wonder that Judith has thoughts of the cloister - or that her aunt is gently nudging her in that direction. Both Cadfael and Sister Magdalen advise Judith against it, although from rather different points of view. :)
Then Brother Eluric is found dead in Niall's garden - not a suicide, as the brothers at first fear, but murdered, stabbed by someone who tried and failed to cut the rosebush down with a hatchet. Judith, calling on Niall to pick up a belt buckle he'd repaired for her, stumbles upon the scene - and when Cadfael tells her why Eluric crept out to see the rosebush one last time, she feels guilty that he suffered so much and she never noticed. Turning it over in her mind, she resolves to go to the abbey in the morning and make the house an outright gift - but the word gets out from her servants' gossip, and the next morning she's kidnapped, by someone who'd rather take a chance on forcing her into a marriage and getting *all* her property instead of only half. (Her cousin Miles is beside himself - getting a new boss like *that* isn't something anyone would want, even without a cousin's safety to worry about.)
My compliments to any reader who deduces what happened to Judith before Peters reveals the solution. Eluric's murder - and another later on - are fair puzzles. (Ever the forensics expert, Cadfael takes a wax impression of a distinctive footprint from the damp earth beside the rosebush, to give the town cobblers a chance of catching Eluric's murderer by the heel, for instance.) Niall Bronzesmith, quiet as he is, has problems of his own; after his wife's death in childbirth, he fostered their daughter with his sister Cecily's cheerful family outside town, since he couldn't take care of a small baby alone, although he loves her very much. She's too little to understand why he only comes for frequent visits, and he needs to arrange to bring her back to live with him before she starts thinking he doesn't want her.
Lovely story.
My favorite of the Brother Cadfael Mysteries.......2002-02-06
You know how when you read a series of books the plots begin to run together ... not with Ellis Peters. Although I recommend reading each of the books in the Brother Cadfael series in order, this is my favorite.
In many ways the plot is actually quite trite, female widow needs husband who's not interested in her money. But the way Peters puts her elements together is unique to her and our hero. Her stories are just a way to convey her love of history, not only the factual information but also the mood and atmosphere. It is the latter part that she does so well.

Book Description
Lickin Creek, Pennsylvania, is light-years from New York City, where Tori Miracle earned her first fifteen minutes of fame as a novelist. Now Tori and her two cats have come to Lickin Creek to visit her friend Alice-Ann--and to attend the town's annual Rose Rent festival honoring Alice-Ann's obnoxious husband, Richard. Generations earlier, Richard's ancestor, worried about the state of his soul, allowed churches to build on his land in exchange for one red rose as rent. Now the town has made it an annual celebration. But Alice-Ann is celebrating something else: She's about to divorce Richard--until Richard turns up dead, his body adorned by a single red rose.
Now Tori is being pulled into a homicide investigation spearheaded by an unnervingly handsome cop, crowded with aristocrats, wanna-bes, and some ghostly presences of the past. In fact, all of Lickin Creek, from its historic castle to its labyrinth of Civil War-era tunnels, is haunted by secrets, including the one that won't stay dead and buried--and hasn't stopped killing yet. . . .

A Winner!.......2000-06-15
Death Pays the Rose Rent is one fantastic mystery! From the very first page I enjoyed Tori Miracle's transition from a struggling author to a successful detective. In this latter role I wanted to help her solve each crime. Tori's detective skills become apparent in the quaint little town of Lickin Creek where she delves into the distant past to uncover hidden clues that help her solve the crimes.
Some books have many boring pages, but not this one. Every page is alive and exciting. I highly recommend it.
Tori Miracle is likable and the local history is enjoyable........1999-09-28
I am from Chambersburg,Pennsylvania. Death Pays The Rose Rent is a a very enjoyable book. Both the book and the author are delightful. Great job, Valerie.
this book was a treat !!!!!.......1999-02-17
It's refreshing to pick up a book by a writer you have never read before and find it to be a terrific surprise. I enjoyed my time in Licken Creek, the characters were full bodied, the story was well crafted. I will be looking for Valerie S. Malmont again ! B.S. Milton
A great heroine, a good mystery w/ a rich history backdrop........1999-02-17
Being a resident of Chambersburg, PA, I was very interested to read a no vel by a local author, and I immediately became hooked by the remarkable resembla nce the town of Lickin Creek had to Chambersburg. Many of the places and people mentioned gave me the real feeling of experiencing a wonderful murder mystery set in my home town. For those who love local history mixed with good suspense and rich, quirky characters, I strongly recommend this book. But to be fair and a li ttle critical, I must say that a few of the situations seemed a bit contrived and hard to believe. Still, overall, a fun, fast read!
Great fun!.......1998-10-16
I like Tori Miracle. She's adventurous, spirited, likeable. Of course, she also has her crabby side, and a past that occasionally prevents her from moving forward. In short--a fully fleshed out character, and someone you might even like to have as a friend. Tori's adventures in DEATH PAYS THE ROSE RENT take her from Hell's Kitchen, NY, to Lickin Creek, PA; from present day, to spooky legends of the past; from the physical to the metaphical -- and it all flows quite seamlessly. I can't wait to share Tori's next adventure. -- Kris Neri, mystery writer.

Book Description
Brave men, one and all, have been dispatched on what the king promised was a glorious quest. But Xena knows the truth--Menelaus is using the questers to hunt down Helen, the wife who fled from him years ago. Now the Warrior Princess must risk the wrath of her sworn enemy, the god Poseidon, as she takes to the sea to warn Helen...
Customer Reviews:
Super Reader.......2007-08-07
Menelaus and his scheming priest Avicus have a scam going. They want young men to believe they are going on a hero's quest, when all Menelaus wants to do is get Helen back.
Joxer is dumb enough to fall for this, and given the priest knows who he is, and that he can manipulate Xena through him, he takes full advance. Xena's old lay Draco, the warlord, and a young Bellerophon are also involved.
As the first of a trilogy, it ends with the travelling three on a ship travelling further towards where Menelaus wants them to be.
Xena???.......2005-10-26
Ru Emerson is maybe a good writer but she dont know anything about Xena! All those books suck, By the gods!!!
Just Doesn't Cut It.......2004-05-18
I Just finished reading the first two books based on Hercules and Xena. BY THE SWORD by Timothy Boggs was the better of the two. THE EMPTY THRONE by Ru Emerson was not quite as enjoyable.
Having seen Xena rescue the arc of the Covenant, Defend Troy, save Helen and meet Homer, Xena goes to Ithaca and gets involved in the Odyssey (Homer is still a young boy and has never met any of the heroes). Unfortunately it lacked the fun and silliness that runs throughout the series. Although I do like the way Homer was in diapers at the start of the Trojan war. Really.
I had hoped that books based on the series would get better with time (like they did with Star Trek) but there were only a few and now the series has ended. Oh, well. If you really liked the show, you should probably skip this one. Ru Emerson is a talented writer but the nuances of are just not her style.
Crappy.......2004-02-13
Ru Emerson knows nothing of Xena's attitude or style and she changes chakram in to her own version of shakra. There were also several spelling or typing errors. Obviously she's too cheap to have anyone proofread her work. It is like that in all of her other books as well. RU EMERSON STOP WRITING ABOUT WHAT YOU DON'T KNOW A THING ABOUT>
Great Book!!!.......2001-10-01
This book is very interesting. I thought it was very well written and that Ru had done a fabulous job with the characters and the story line. The characters especially, they were exactly like they were on the television show. I would recommend this to any die hard Xena fan!!!

Customer Reviews:
Excellent.......2007-10-11
This is considered by many to be a classice self help book on cognitive psychology, meaning changing our thoughts about the situaion and playing more positive more helpful "tapes" in our mind. I recommend this book highly.
Just what I expected.......2007-09-10
I was instructed by a counselor to order and read this book. So far, it is helpful. I was pleased with its condition and the promptness in delivery.
Life Changing, Enlightening, Motivating, Real.......2007-09-02
You are not alone anymore when you read Feeling Good. The keys are clearly given for the root causes of depression and anxiety and then you are lead to hope to unlock the door of feeling good. It will take effort and belief but it is truth that will get you out of the pit if you really want out and want to feel good instead of bad. It is one aspect of overcoming depression. I would also recommend lifestyle therapy such as diet and exercise changes.
Book buying customer.......2007-08-28
My shrink suggested I buy Feeling Good so I did. It's a good book that has obviously been written by someone who's done a lot of research on the subject of depression. But that's the problem, for me it's too much research.
The book is longer than a depressed person has patience to read. It's over 700 pages and all that is packaged in a small paperback. All I want is the results of the research not hundreds of pages of studies and survays and research. I know it's good to know all this stuff but as a depressed person I don't really care about it. All I'm interested in is in dealing with the depression. Bottom line, I havn't finished the book yet because it's too much like a text book and that's hardly what I need.
Other than that, as I say, it's a good book with a lot of information if you have time to either read it all or try and find the info you're looking for without putting it away for later.
Excellent - this one's a great size for carrying in car, backpack or purse.......2007-08-27
Down to earth, everyday helpful, and the reverse role-playing exercises Dr. Burns uses with his patients and relates to us in this book are not only funny, witty, amusing and interesting, they are spot-on in their usefulness.
LOVE this book!

Please read this.......1999-12-17
Dr. Burns challenges us up front with a notion: we can change the way we feel if we change the way we think.
If you follow through on the "Feeling Good Handbook" you'll have little room to disagree with him. Dr. Burns' thorough review of mental fallacies should force you to retreat to complete self cognitive analysis.
If you make an concerted effort to apply what Dr. Burns' suggests. you should notice a difference in every day life.
This is a book that requires more than one read. To completely absorb and then apply what he recommends in one reading would be impossible. Keep it on a shelf within near reach.
One of the best self-help books on the market today!.......1998-04-22
This book is excellent. It uses time proven cognitive therapy principles and lists them in an easy to understand and use format. This book is a must for all readers. The money you save verses seeing a therapist makes it a great bargin. I'm not saying it should replace your therspist. But it follows cognitive therapy to a tee--it helps to teach you to become your own therapist

From the supplier: Cognitive therapist David D. Burns said that moods are formed by thoughts. In 'Feeling Good: The New Mood Therapy,' Burns identified a number of cognitive distortions that result in depression. Burn's therapeutic book renders extensional foundations in general semantics in that human evaluation and misevaluation are pivotal elements of mood formation and that the very same perceptions may be regulated to acquire inner peace.

Good Stuff!.......2005-07-08
I really like this book, and always keep it in easy reach. I already have several favorite recipes, including Ravioli in Sage Brown Butter Sauce (my fav), Dessert Wontons (my husband's fav), and Ham and Swiss Pockets (so easy!). Most of the recipes taste like they were so hard to make, and they weren't -- and I am a novice cook, so if I say it's easy, it is!
As far as an earlier reviewer's complaint about the "copious use of butter, oil and heavy cream," this isn't a Lite Cooking Recipe Book, and it never claimed to be. It claims to have "simple and sensational recipes," and it fulfills that claim just fine. And, by the way, butter? tastes goooood. :)
"Everyday cooking?" Give me a break!.......2005-03-24
Don't be fooled by the title of this cookbook. First, it is filled with exotic and gourmet, not to mention expensive, recipies. The choice of ingredients might be fine if you live in New York or San Francisco, but here in northern Wisconsin many ingredients just aren't available. (And if they were, would you fix squab or fried rabbit for Tuesday night dinner for your family?)
A second disappointment is the copious use of butter, oil and heavy cream.
This is the first time I've ever been so disappointed in a book I ordered that I will be returning it.
Fantastic!.......2005-01-29
This is a great cookbook for the beginner and experienced cook. The recipes are easy yet elegant. The variety is excellent.

BRAVO!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!.......2005-01-19
Awesome you two Hildebrands!!!!!!!!!!!! Great simple recipes. Useable with small people wanting to help. Delicious and able to create something on a whim with what is available in the house to entertain with also!
Keep it on the counter........2004-11-24
The Hildebrand cook book is very useful to me. I'm not a gourmet; I don't even like to cook that much (yet must do it three times a day). Somehow knowing that any of the interesting dishes in this fat book can be created with just three ingredients actually makes me want to whip something up. Even I can manage three ingredients! I like the fact that they include "add it in" items beyond the three. The add-ins are still simple, but make me feel like a real cook, by deciding whether to embelish. This is the only cook book I actually keep on my counter.
