Could use a better editor.......2006-08-12
The copy of this book I purchased had "A mystery" on the cover. Now I'm no genius but if a mystery book is named "The Rasputin Relic" it isn't really a mystery what is in the bank vault. I'm not sure why the author dragged it out so long before the characters found out. It just made for boring reading. On top of this the characters seemed formulaic. A woman with a past, a cynical cop, a government agent with no heart, etc. Finally the ending completed eradicated any goodwill I had towards the book. I won't ruin the ending but I will say it is completely unbelievable.
As a side note Hampton Roads publishers has a note in the back of the book that they are a publisher of books on "metaphysics and visionary fiction". It hardly seemed visionary to me.
Curse or blessing?.......2004-08-22
I happened upon this book purely by chance, having never heard of either it or its author. It was a good purchase, for I really did enjoy the book. The plot is a bit confusing, but it's no secret that it involves the supposed severed right hand of Rasputin, the "Mad Monk" of Imperial Russia. When it's discovered in a bank vault, a wave of unusual deaths seems to follow. The hero, a police chief, discovers other murders seemingly possibly connected to the hand, and there are various nefarious characters flitting in and out of the story. I found the premise of the book quite interesting, and since the action supposedly takes place in a (fictional) town not tremendously far from where I live, it had the special cachet of local interest. It's a good mystery, and worth reading, for a different take on the legend of Rasputin.

Someone print Lyndon Hardy's books in hardcover please!.......2007-01-16
Lyndon Hardy wrote a wonderful trilogy
Master of the Five Magics
Secret of the Sixth Magic
Riddle of the Seven Realms
I highly recommend all three books and I hope someone out there will reprint them in hardcover editions! Hint Hint ;-)
Lyndon Hardy does it again.......2006-08-16
A strong sequel to 'Master of Five Magics,' we return to Alodar's world with a different protagonist -- Jemidon, (failed) apprentice sorcerer.
I remember the frustration I felt with Jemidon as he tried casting spells over and over again, getting them technically perfect, but still messing up. Like Alodar, we follow a hero who fails and fails but never gives up or gives in. The sort of person I can truly identify with and respect.
The world building is excellent, as we are introduced to the sixth magic, that of meta-laws. This may be a stumbling block for less intellegent readers, but I loved it. Complex, logical, and self-consistant, Hardy writes part of the novel as the 'hi-tech' of magic. We even do world jumping.
The setting are memorable, and I can still feel the desperation behind Jemidon's efforts as he constantly reconfigures his focus-puzzle, trying to escape one of the many traps that catch him.
The plot kept taking new unexpected directions, typical of Hardy, and the narrative pacing is everything you could hope for. The dialogue isn't the modern witticisms or biting sarcasm, but that makes the novel into a good story instead of a wannabe television scriptline.
This novel has my stamp of quality and recommendations. If you are a logical mind, such as an engineering student or scientist who enjoys fantasy, you will consider this Lyndon Hardy's best work.
A worthy sequel to "Master of the Five Magics".......2005-07-08
In his first book, the author not only detailed a heroic quest but also managed to apply great logic to the laws of magic.
With this book, the author takes his concept and expands on it, introducing "meta-laws" which govern the basic laws of magic.
In this tale, we're introduced to Jemidon, a young man with an unerring ability to fail in the simplest of spells in all of the arts. What he does posess, however, is a brilliant analytical mind that is excellent at solving puzzles. He puts this great mind to work when he realizes that the strange creature known as Melizar is slowly rendering each of the five branches of magic useless. So it is that Jemidon sets out to stop Melizar, and in doing so he learns about "meta-magic".
I would agree with one reviewer - in this novel the author gets a little heavy with his logical explanations and deductions, which can get a little confusing...the first time I read it as a kid, I didn't fully appreciate the novel. Now, I consider it a brilliant book.
Finally, the author once again shows how the smallest of things can have a great impact on the outcome of the quest!
I thoroughly recommend this novel to anyone :)
Good for the Analytical Minds.......2003-05-29
This book has one thing that so many other fantasy books are lacking - SOLID RULES. There are hard and fast laws that govern the actions of magic, and Lyndon Hardy has quantified them, and gotten them down to the point where they're considered more like a craft akin to blacksmithing than anything else. So for anyone who's ever wondered what's the guiding principles behind WHY somebody can just have a fireball appear out of nowhere... this is the book for you.
Classic Fantasy !.......2000-09-21
I found a copy I had read years and years ago, so I re-read it last night ... Probably one of the best pieces of Fantasy fiction I've ever read. The theories were well worked out, and the main character was developed enough so that you actually cared about what happened to him.

The man and his plan make sense.......2007-10-10
Prior to reading Solve Your Child's Sleep Problems, I have only heard negative comments about Ferber. "Oh, the 'Cry-it-out-Guy,'" people would comment whenever his name surfaced. However, I was getting desperate. I was tired of waking up at 12:00 am, 1:00 and 2:00 am to resettle my four month old daughter. She seemed to settle back to sleep only when I picked her up, and she nestled into my arms.
Although I thought his work wouldn't apply to me -- I mean, hey, my baby doesn't have "sleep problems" -- she falls asleep very easily when it comes to naps and nighttime, and I only have to rock her back to sleep in the wee hours. But I realized that this was the problem!
Babies don't come into this world knowing how to do anything. Think about it: whether we're breastfeeding or bottle feeding, often times a lactation specialist has to come in to teach our babies how to latch on and then they (babies) have to learn how to take a bottle.
So why would we expect them to know how to sleep?
Ferber explains just this, giving very informative (and interesting, mind you) info on baby sleep cycles. Through anecdotes and analogies, he explains why "sleep associations" (rocking, holding, pacifiers, superfluous late night feedings) need to be stopped in order to help your baby learn how to fall asleep by himself.
After reading, I asked myself, "What's my goal?" If it was to simply get my child back to sleep when she woke up, I could surely keep picking her up and rocking her for the next couple of years I suppose. But I realized that my goal is to get her to be able to put herself back to sleep. And Ferber taught me how to do this.
By putting your awake (but tired) baby down to sleep and consistently checking in on her according to time intervals with which you are comfortable, you essentially teach your little one how to soothe himself or herself.
This is day two and already I've noticed a remarkable difference. Last night at 7:00 my husband and I put my daughter down, and after 3 minutes of crying, I did a check. Just stood there so she could see me and kept making a "Shhhh" sound. Left after a minute. What followed were 5 minutes of crying. Again, another visit, same deal. More crying followed, but before 10 minutes were up (my next scheduled check), her cries became staggered. They turned into little mumbles. With a quick check on my video monitor, my sweet pea was asleep!
She woke up for a feeding at 11:30. I treated her wakefulness as interrupted sleep until I realized she had her hungry cry -- you know, the "Nyah, nyah, nyah" sounds. Fed her and didn't see her smiling face until 6:00 in the morning.
Notice I say smiling. She hasn't spit in my eye or given me the ol' stink eye for that matter.
We've been following the routine with naps. Ferber includes fantastic help on how to handle naps.
All in all, do yourself a favor and just get this book. You will notice a difference in literally a couple of days.
For those people who claim that their child only got more agitated when they came into the room -- well, yes, that did happen. Sometimes my daughter would begin smiling and laughing. I didn't return her enthusiasm, just kept a straight face, shhh'ed and left. I wonder if those people had problems with the program because they went in at the inappropriate times. (In other words, just because your child is making noise doesn't warrant a check-in. He/she needs to be crying or calling for you. As long as your baby is safe -- no arm/leg hanging out of a crib slat, etc... -- those other noises might be attempts at self-soothing and sleep!)
Hope this helps.
worked for me!.......2007-10-10
My son never really had sleep issues until he about 3 weeks ago when he turned 4 months old. Even though it's tough on me getting up every night to give him a bottle, I didn't really mind that, it was the going to bed that was getting more and more difficult. No matter how many books we read or how long we rocked, he still screamed every night when put in his crib for up to an hour (I would go in and comfort him of course during these times) and then wake up screaming after sleeping for an hour or so. I was worried, thought he was having nightmares. At four months old I wasn't sure if he was just too young to address any sleep issues but I bought the book anyway thinking if he was too young, at least I would be prepared for when he got older. To my surprise, the book addresses babies as young as 3 months old and how they should be sleeping at that point. The funny thing is the first case study addressed in the book was my son to a tee. Of course I wanted to jump ahead and read about how to fix this but I persevered and read the entire book, and found the information very helpful. I do admit, as soon as I go the basic idea, I began to adjust his schedule and changed how he was put down and within 2 days I could see a difference!! The first night was horrible but as the nights went on I had to go in his room less and less, and as of now (it's been about a week and a half) my son goes to bed very easily and is sleeping through the night!! (an added bonus) The book does get a little tedious when talking about the medical aspect of it but overall it was a lifesaver, I already recommended it to to friends.
Very Helpful - tips worked within the week!!.......2007-10-09
After reading just a few of the tips on getting my child to sleep ... we were sleeping through the night that weekend!
Key take-aways were positive re-inforcement using the gate at their door - bribery after a good night and sometimes just letting him cry it out!
Amazing!.......2007-10-08
My husband and I had tried pretty much every method for getting our one-year-old to sleep through the night, so I was skeptical that we would get results with this book. The first night he cried for about 15 minutes, and every night after that it was less and less. These days, there's no crying at bedtime. Now he's sleeping through the night (YIPPY!) and naps are great. He seems so much happier and feels so much better now the he gets such good sleep. If you're at your wits end like we were, try this method. You'll be glad you did!
Read before you pass judgment.......2007-09-17
There are so many debates regarding the ferber method, however, you must read the book before you make a judgment! Many think it's just letting a child scream their head off before he/she falls asleep, not the case. At 2 months my son (breastfed) was getting up 1x per night consistently. However, at 3 months he went backwards getting up 3-4x per night. So we decided to make a change. I read Dr. Ferber's book and there were so many things that made so much sense...My husband and i were not enabling him to fall asleep on his own, he needed us to fall asleep and get back to sleep once he woke up. After reading the book we made a few minor changes and he's doing wonderfully, major difference within 3 days! He is napping like a champ and nights are a JOY!! The most he ever cried was 15 minutes. He's still a happy baby with a strong attachment to my husband and I. Actually, he's happier now that he is getting healthier sleep. I would strongly advise anyone to read this book if you're having any problems with sleep. It made a huge difference in our family's life!

A man of Rabelaisian appetite, with the exquisite palate of the true gastronome and the literary flair to match, A.J. Liebling (1904-1963) was a formidable eater and a remarkable man, and his nostalgic recitation of his years and meals in Paris is a pleasure to read, dream on, and drool about.
Liebling treasured a good appetite as a prerequisite for writing about food, as his accounts of substantial meals (two portions of cassoulet, one steak topped with beef marrow, and a dozen or so oysters, for example) attest. For the poised, precise, literary, and humorous flavor of his writing, you need only crack open the book--any page will do. Liebling recounts how to dine superbly without being lead astray by too much money, and he digresses magnificently on the evils of abstemiousness ("No sane man can afford to dispense with debilitating pleasures; no ascetic can be considered reliably sane"). In this age of diets and pragmatic health care, it's refreshing to read such an inspired and inspiring ode to pleasure. As a means of savoring a love affair with Paris, sparking an interest in a trip to France, restructuring your priorities for the trip you've already planned, or gearing up on the flight over for the gastronomic debauches to come, Liebling is unsurpassed. --Stephanie Gold
Book Description
New Yorker writer A.J. Liebling recalls his Parisian apprenticeship in the fine art of eating in this charming memoir.
Customer Reviews:
A Treat.......2006-07-30
Did anyone ever love Paris, or at least eating in Paris, like Liebling. I share his love for the city and for the cuisine. Perhaps this colors my view but I really enjoyed this book.
reading between the meals.......2005-06-08
This book was strongly recommended to me by a friend who is from Europe and is very discerning when it comes to American writers. I'm glad that I have it.
While not nearly as zany or as challenging as Kerouac or Burroughs, this work, at its best, is rich, insightful and intensely funny: "What he called his pipes("ma tuyauterie"), being insufficiently excercised, lost their tone, like the leg muscles of a retired champion. When, in his kindly effort to please me, he challenged the escargots en pots de chambre, he was like an old fighter who tries a comeback without training for it."
The language is elegant and piercing, despite what the hypercritics have said; and the work stands as an opus to epicurean bliss.
It's well worth the read before, after, or in between the wonderful meals!
A Taste for Life. .......2004-12-21
I have to say first of all that I'm a sucker for all of the "Paris in the early part of the twentieth century" literature. I love Celine and Miller, but my favorite was Hemingway's A Moveable Feast. Well, Between Meals is no A Moveable Feast but it certainly is a high quality read that I can unquestionably recommend to you.
Liebling, make no mistake, is a top notch writer and his sentence structure, use of metaphor, and style have much to offer aspiring wordsmiths. He has an eye for the essential and this is particularly true if you're at all like me as far as food is concerned. Liebling is a true gourmand and, even though I am completely unlearned and unappreciative in regards to fine dining, I still enjoyed his narration and memories of that splendid age.
The best of these essays is "Passable" where he recalls his old girlfriend from his student years. Liebling informs us that he does a poor job in reconstructing her but his description of their romance is quite compelling. I loved that essay just as I did the one on Mirande. This is a world long gone but we're fortunate that books like this are still in print. Reading it will give you a snapshot of beauty that will hang like a Renoir in the corridors of your mind.
Makes you long for the good old days..........2004-09-30
This is a fantastic book, but if you've never cracked The New Yorker open before, you might not like the style. Very in the moment and tongue in cheek, Liebling is a master wordsmith leaving no offense done to him by the onset of modernity unheckled. Some of the greatest tidbits come when he derrides the famous Michelin Star rating system for French restaurants, now a standard that chefs have literally killed themselves over - Liebling reminds you that its just a rating from a TIRE manufacturer and that he feels it marked the decline of real French cooking.
I read passages of this book out loud to friends and family, most notably the ones dealing with the immense amounts of food, and always got a laugh. This is not a book dealing with the upper crust of French high society, but rather a street wise, in the guts little tome that entertains and educates - though sadly, it is unlikely one can find the Paris that Liebling describes anymore.
What a bore! One star is an over-rating!.......1999-12-07
Before purchasing this book, I read all the customer comments which gave nothing but praise. I just don't get it. I wish one of the reviewers would have given me tips on how to stay awake while plodding through each sentence/paragraph, along with where to find a single nugget in these pages worth remembering. Okay, I'll probably always wonder how the author's love of boxing was deemed worth inclusion, but then I wonder why the entire book was printed. I feel suckered! And can't think of anything to recommend this book. My advice is to spend your money on ANYTHING written by M.F.K. Fisher, "The Tummy Trilogy" by Calvin Trillin or "Blue Trout and Black Truffles" by Joseph Wechsberg for much more pleasurable reading.
