Book Description
It's the spring of 1141 in Shrewsbury, England, where the celebration of Saint Winifred has brought a flood of pilgrims - and possibly a murderer. Brother Cadfael, who has taken religious vows and retired to the quiet, contemplative life, discovers a plot of retribution and is once again caught up in evil.

Revenge is a dish best...not served?.......2006-03-03
There's a saying among statisticians (a group I identify with from time to time): "You can always draw a straight line with two points." Loosely translated, this means that you should avoid drawing conclusions based on fewer than 3 observations. This being my third Brother Cadfael mystery (I obtained a random selection from a neighbor's giveaway bin), I feel I can now opine more confidently, knowing that my recommendations are probably not based on a coincidental selection of the best the author has to offer.
As always, the author provides us with a fascinating and unparalleled look into life in medieval England, with particular focus on monastery life. This installment, however, is less of a whodunit than the others. The principal crime was committed hundreds of miles away from Cadfael's home in Shrewsbury and all he has to go on are some second or third-hand accounts and some unusual visitors at the annual pilgrimage in honor of St. Winifred. In some ways, the mystery solves itself, with Cadfael simply providing a nudge here and there to bring the matter to conclusion.
For those interested in 12th century English history, there is an especially potent dose of it here, as the brewing civil war between Empress Maud and King Stephen comes to a head. Wading through these details makes this a bit more difficult of a read than usual. One interesting upshot of this part of the story is the implication that it is possible for political (if not military) enemies to be civil and gentlemanly with each other. What a novel concept!
The book also explores the nature of revenge, and the ultimate lack of fulfillment in it. This, too, is a concept that is mostly foreign in today's world.
Romance is again a significant feature, always a pleasant surprise given that the setting is a monastery. In this case, however, the romance is relatively conventional and only peripherally related to the crime. It does however, provide useful clues for resolving the mystery.
Another subplot relates to a mysterious visitor whose past is connected with Cadfael's, resulting in a surprise revelation at the end of the book. Cadfael also engages in a good deal of introspection regarding miraculous divine intervention, as befitting the occasion of the pilgrimage.
In summary, this book continues the tradition of solid storytelling and fascinating reading established by the author in the Brother Cadfael series. Both novitiates and long-time fans of the series will enjoy this book.
St.Winifred's miracle.......2006-02-24
In this, the tenth of the Brother Cadfael series, the year is 1141, and with King Stephen of England a prisoner in Bristol, the Empress Maud is negotiating with the people of London to be crowned at Westminster. Stephen's queen has sent an envoy to the bishop to plead her husband's cause when he is attacked in the street. One of Maud's own men, Rainald Brossard, is appalled at this unfair attack and goes to his rescue. In the ensueing melee, Rainald is himself stabbed amd killed. In the Abbey of St.Peter and St.Paul in Shrewsbury, the monks are preparing for the annual pilgrimage which is held to celebrate the anniversary of the day when the bones of St.Winifred, a Welsh, virgin saint, were brought to the Abbey. Cadfael is especially praying for a miracle to occur, as he has a slightly uneasy conscience about the actual retrieving of the bones which is explained in the first book of the series, A Morbid Taste for Bones.A strange pair of young men arrive at the Abbey guest house, one of whom is walking with bare, bloodied feet and bearing a very heavy iron cross around his neck on a thin cord. The other man never leaves his side for a minute, even during sleep. The mystery of the story is easy to work out but the whys and wherefores are more complex. It's another wonderful slice of mediaeval history brought to vivid life by Ellis Peters.
Complex story of time and people.......2005-08-16
It is A.D. 1141. A year that brings a tide of pilgrims to the Abbey.
This is the tenth mystery in the series. You may want to start from the first to let the interacting mysteries reveal themselves in chronological order. This is the second one for me after "The Morbid Taste for Bones." I do have to warn you that the synopsis to "A Morbid Taste for Bones" and "Virgin in the Ice" is played out again somewhat in the first two chapters of this book.
What can not be portrayed in the short Cadfael movies and would make marvelous reading on its own is the inter action between the forces and reasons behind the vacillating positions of Empress Maud and King Stephen. This is also a crucial part of the story; as the loyalties and logistics play a major part in the mystery and people's lives.
I will not compare and contrast the people in the story or the differences in the film adaptation as the fun is finding out for your self, all the actions and interaction of people. I will say that none of this would have been possible with out the grace of St. Winifred.
A great story, even without the mystery.......2002-02-11
If you're interested in an audio edition, check that you're getting the unabridged recording narrated by Stephen Thorne.
Ideally, read all the preceding books in the series, in order, before reading this one. At a minimum, first read #1 (A Morbid Taste for Bones, the story of how the monastery came to have St. Winifred as its patroness) and The Virgin in the Ice, to avoid the biggest spoilers.
This June of 1141, the feast of the translation of St. Winifred dawns upon a time when the civil war between the Empress Maud and King Stephen for the throne of England may finally draw to a close: Stephen was captured at the battle of Lincoln, and even now Maud is negotiating with the city of London for her entry into Westminster for her coronation. The papal legate, Bishop Henry of Blois, brother to Stephen, has called a legatine council (including Abbot Radulfus from Shrewsbury) and is working on turning his allegiance to the empress, for the sake of peace. Hugh, sheriff of Shropshire for Stephen, broods on ways and means of getting a man into Bristol to free Stephen, and prays for a miracle, while using his friend Brother Cadfael as a sounding board.
Cadfael, too, is praying for a miracle - any miracle - at this feast of St. Winifred. Not from a desire for the abbey's glory, or from any faltering of his own faith, but as a sign that the saint took no offense from the events of _A Morbid Taste for Bones_, when he accompanied a delegation from the abbey to the saint's grave in Wales to bring back her mortal remains as holy relics. (Since that was before Hugh's arrival in Shrewsbury, Cadfael summarizes the story for him, so it's possible to follow the plot of _Pilgrim_ without reading _Bones_. But be warned that Cadfael reveals the ending of _Bones_ to Hugh.)
Abbot Radulfus returns in time for the festival, bearing word of a cowardly murder at the legatine council. The attempted murder of the envoy of Stephen's queen failed, but Ranulf Bossard, the brave man of the empress' party who foiled the attempt, was himself cut down in the street.
All the brothers are busily preparing for the huge influx of pilgrims at this time of year, many of whom are ill and seeking miraculous healing. Brother Cadfael, as herbalist, sees some of the more noteworthy cases: Rhun, a devout half-Welsh boy with a twisted leg that might respond to treatment; his sister, Melangell; a young Welsh clark, Ciaran, traveling barefoot and wearing a large iron cross, on his way to Wales to die; Matthew, Ciaran's faithful shadow. There are less savory characters, as well, petty (and not so petty) career criminals who prey on the credulous and the frail. (Credulous, as in, people who trust a stranger's dice.) Some may even have fled from a city too hot to hold them.
Into this festival atmosphere rides a young envoy of the empress' party, on a twofold mission: to sound out Hugh on the question of his fealty, and to seek Bossard's young heir, who disappeared in this direction after his lord's death. But even if he is among the pilgrims, how can he be identified by those who have never seen him? And was he involved in Bossard's death?

Product Description
The last hours of any war are often its bloodiest, with acts of treachery and revenge commonplace. England's civil war, which has for years pitted village against village seems to be drawing to a slow, painful close. At Shrewbury it is the occasion for the Feast of Saint Winifred, an annual celebration that attracts pilgrims from all across England who come seeking after miracles. Two such seekers arrive at the abbey and Brother Cadfael's herbarium door - a brief respite on their journey into Wales: the dark-eyed Ciaran, who has vowed to walk there unshod as a kind of penance and his companion, Matthew, close on his heels and brooding. Cadfael senses there is something more to their relationship that meets the eye. When his old friend Sir Oliver arrives with a tale of murder, the youths' intense association becomes darker and more insrutable. This book is recorded on 6 cassettes and is a library edition

Yvgenie: Death-in-Life.......2001-07-22
A stupendous achievement! Cherryh brings her Rusalka series a step further with this fantasy novel, evoking mythological roots that nurture us all. The premise of wizardry being a matter of mere wishes in the pre-Christian Russia is the precursor to the practice of Christian prayer. If a wizard is forbidden to wish for anything for himself, that is the corrolary to the Lord's Prayer. Wizard emerges as sacred priest, which in fact the witches and artist's were in the pre-Christian world. Sasha at last finds the reward he deserves for all his self-denying loyalty to his friends Pyetr and Eveshka.
The dual nature of Pyetr's legitimate daughter's lover, (uncorrupted youth and evil, but redeemable spector) leads us to a deep understanding of the nature of love and of life--mortality consists not of the foreknowlege of death in the future, but the awareness that death is always with us, even as we breathe.
It also resonates on the Ressurection: love and loyalty engender rebirth.
The plot comes to a delightful conclusion, nimbly assisted by ubiquitous and adorable vodka-guzzling Yard Thing, Babi. (I seem to remember being a House Thing at my Grandmother's, called "Hoppy".)
Although the characters in the trilogy, "Rusalka", "Chernevog", and "Yvgenie" seem exotic, being wizards, ghosts, and former ghosts, they serve as a reflection of our own deeper nature: Eveshka has no powers any ordinary woman does not have. Having been alive once, then a ghost, then alive again, she is simply more aware of her connection with what Clarissa Pinkola Estes terms 'Veshka's "life-death-life nature", in Estes' wonderful treatist, "Women Who Run With the Wolves." Moreover, when Eveshka had been a ghost, in her rusalka mode, she was the classic study of an anorexic maiden, with the same parental influences that bring about anorexia in a real child.
The fact that Pyetr had the courage to face the dangers inherent in living with a rusalka and in befriending a wizard demonstrates that he earned the right to enjoy life as the head of his somewhat unconventional household.
Cherryh is a great lady, and a great writer. There is plenty of room left here for a sequel: "Et tu," Hwiiur?
The best in the series; readable but still flawed.......2001-06-07
The essential premise of this series, set in a medieval Russia-like world, is that wizards can do magic just by wishing. This sounds easy, but in fact it's the source of a lot of problems: a casual impulse or a child's unconsidered desire can have unforeseen, possibly disastrous consequences. In this third and best installment, Ilyana, the daughter of a non-magical man and a mother who is both a wizard and a revenant from the dead, tries to deal with old, dangerous magic and new magical threats as well as more traditional teenage problems. The family stuff -- not only between Ilyana and her parents but involving her grandparents' generation as well -- is sometimes a little too much like a talk show. The plot here also has a nebulous quality. It's much more comprehensible than the prequel, Chernevog, which was utterly confusing at times. Still, though, the exact nature of the challenges facing the characters is often unclear and the final outcome is hard to understand. Readers don't need everything spelled out for them, but they do need a little more clarity than this novel offers. Still, I found all the characters appealing (except for the mother, Eveshka) and the magical creatures are particularly well done. This book is better than the others in the series in that the characters do less apparently pointless jumping at shadows (though there's still some), more people and places are introduced, and the plot makes a little more sense.
Awesome series!.......2000-07-26
Chernevog, Rusalka, and Yvgenie are the greatest books. I enjoyed the atmosphere. An old-time russian fairy-tale. This series pulled together bits of all folklore I know, and even taught me some things I wasn't aware of. The characters are likeable, even the truely evil ones. You can imagine where they are coming from and why it is they are acting like they are. Perhaps it is a bit predictable, but it's a fairy-tale.
a uniquely written fantasy.......2000-07-13
C.J. Cherryh's style of writing in Yvgenie (and in the first two books, Rusalka and Chernevog) is unique. It might be off-putting at first, but you get into the structure really quickly, and the style works well with the story. I liked this series, especially Yvgenie, because I liked seeing Sascha as a mature wizard. Not only the structure is unique; Cherryh's take on magic and wizardry is also. It's a refreshing break from the usual book-and-spells magic found in most other fantasies. All in all, a fun, worthwhile read.
A good light read.......2000-04-18
This is the first book in the series I have read, and I found it immediately engrossing. It was nice to see a teenage character who actually had flaws. I was a bit disappointed by the ending. The final conflict was confusing.

The best plan out there.......2007-09-11
Me and my 3 daughters have really suffered with systemic candida, as a result of intensive and long antibiotic therapy for treating Lyme Disease. My Candida was so bad it was in my lungs, as one doctor said well be grateful it is'nt in your brain!!! After combing websites for 8 weeks, Dr. Jeff's plan seemed to be the most thorough and comprehensive. I bought the book and the suypplements and followed the diet to the letter and did not stray once and the four of us have had complete success!!! We have been symptom and candida free since June. My youngest daughter, had some difficulty with returning yeast after the diet and I contacted Dr. Jeff and we backed her up on the plan and she stayed on for 3 more weeks and is doing well.
[...]. If you e-mail you through that forum he will respond with in 24 hours. I emailed throughout the entire diet and he always got right back to me.
God Bless

I really enjoyed reading this book. It covered a broad spectrum of your health. I agreed with everything I read. Topics I read in other books matched. I like the way the book starts and gets right to the point.
A concise understanding of Candida.......2007-07-10
This book gives a concise understanding of the scope of candida. It is written in language that is easy to understand. I found help for my long term problems of asthma and allergies and fatigue. I have read quite alot about sugar and antibiotic use and its consequences; I really liked the format of the information for quick review of major details of candida and the reccomended program.

LIFEFORCE: A Place to Begin.......2007-03-17
The reader who can best benefit from LIFEFORCE by Jeffrey McCombs is one who has been sick or at least considerably far removed from vibrant health for many years and has no idea of the link between good health and detoxification. McCombs' thesis is that nearly everyone suffers from varying degrees of toxicity brought on by eating chemically altered food which in turn cause the growth of Candida fungus. Further he argues that the indiscriminate use of antibiotics exacerbates the worsening cycle of the body's ability to eliminate toxins. I have no major issues with any of these areas but the slimness of his book (about 100 pages) does not permit him enough space to delve into areas that need further light. I would have appreciated, for example, more explanation on why he deems beef a needed nutrient for numerous antioxidants when nearly all nutritionists suggest that beef simply contains too much animal fat, which for McCombs is a virtue and not a vice. Further, even with his focus on the plusses of beef, he scants a much needed warning that not all beef is created equal. He might have added that organic beef coming from free reign cows should be the first choice of beef shoppers. Still, I do not intend to be too picky. In his relentless urging of his readers to detoxify, I can only applaud such single-minded devotion. After reading McCombs, one might wish to look elsewhere for a more complete consideration of the need to detoxify. I recommend THE NEW DETOX DIET by Elson Haas and the 7-DAY DETOX MIRACLE for a conventional approach. And for an unconventional (and controversial) approach, I suggest NATURAL CURES 'THEY' DON'T WANT YOU TO KNOW ABOUT by Kevin Trudeau.

Cakes Get Rave Reviews.......2007-02-20
I spotted this book at the local library and it inspired me to bake a birthday cake for a coworker. The carrot cake was a hit and I heard, over and over, that it was "the best carrot cake I've ever eaten in my entire life!" Requests followed for the next birthday and once again, I heard, "This is best cake I've ever had in my entire life." Past attempts have received compliments, but never to this extreme. I certainly couldn't take the credit for Purdy's recipes, tips and variations. As previous reviewers have written, Purdy goes beyond the recipe to explain (simply) the chemistry behind things. I learned that the processing of the cocoa makes all the diverence in achieving the red velvet color of the cake of that same name. The only negative comment that I could possibly have is to say that I was disappointed to not find a recipe for a German Chocolate cake. I've checked this book out repeatedly from the library and now plan to buy my very own copy!
It Really Is a Piece of Cake!.......2005-04-23
I borrowed this from the library and have renewed it twice. I'm ready to buy! My son and husband fought over the last slice of the 1-2-3-4 Cake and want me to make it again. I prefer to bake cakes from scratch; they prefer that "light, airy" texture of boxed cakes. This cookbook convinced me to sift the flour - and it made the difference. I like the detail given; it's not just do this, do that. I got an understanding of why the steps were included. A really terrific cake-recipe book!
Wow! This book rules..........2005-01-04
The recipes in this book are just plain yummy! Simply delicious cakes that are not too hard to make. Try the chocolate buttermilk cake--it is DIVINE! Mmmmm...so good:)
Pretty Good Cake.......2004-05-20
The aeration process advocated for shortening type cakes really turns out a light fine textured cake. In addition to great extra cake recipes this book also marches pretty much in lock step with the Betty Crocker Red Book basic tutorials such as for egg, cakes and the ingredient sub list, which is something that I really like.
