For each is eager to implicate the other in Makino's death. But Sano must determine whether the death was indeed murder, and if so, whether it was motivated by politics, love, or sex. When a second violent death occurs, Sano is faced with several suspects, each with a compelling motive. Was it Agemaki, Makino's stone-faced second wife; Okitsu, his beautiful young concubine; Koheiji, his handsome male houseguest; or Tamura, his faithful retainer? Or was it a political assassination? With the help of his wife, Reiko, Sano must solve the murder as he discovers just how intertwined desire and danger really are....

gripping mystery from a master storyteller.......2007-01-04
Rowland has delivered another wonderfully crafted mystery set in the fascinating world of medieval Japan. highly recommended.
Starting to get obsessed .......2005-09-28
I am an admitted fan of all of Rowlands earlier works and she does a great job of translating Japan to a western mind. However in her most recent works she seems to be fixiated on the homosexual or bisexual aspects of the culture. Not so much in the way she writes about it or assigns it to her characters as much as the repetition with which she refers to it. I am a student of ancient Japanese culture and history and have no problem acknowledging this aspect of the sexuality of men and women in ancient Japan. That being said, I feel in her latest work exhibits some preoccupation with deviant sexuality that I did not either see the need for or I felt it as a distraction from the story. Again, the mention of it was not my issue. It is the constant referal to it which annoyed me. This was present in a few of her other recent works as well. I will continue to read her however, because she does the world of Japanese history justice and I loved the ending in perfumed sleeve.
best book of the series so far.......2005-04-08
Sano is back and he's got a particularly messy mystery on his hands. A high court official with an complex sexual past and a slew of enimies is dead. The old man was beaten to death and no-one, not his wife who was sleeping next door, his half witted concubine or his handsome houseguest will admit to knowing anything about it. Sano finds himself attempting to deal with the crime while carefully walking a thin line between two opposing factions and the weaked willed Shogun. If he finds the murderer it may ruin his career and life. If he doesn't the country may be plunged into a war. Only his samuarai code can offer him any comfort.
Sano's wife Reiko is also back and her character is much improved. She's no longer the annoying brat that she used to be and has become a real help to her husband's work rather than the added headache she once was.
Other reviewers have mentioned the sex in this novel. It is very graphic and on occasion, revolting. If that bothers you, be prepared to either skip whole sections or skip the book. This is not a Harlequinn romance and it isn't Nancy Drew or a cozy Agatha Christie.
One thing that Rowland does very well is to get into the heads of widely different characters. The villainess does terrible things but is really a victim herself. The villain is a fascinating, twisted character who does disgusting and vicious things and almost convinces himself and the reader that he has no other choice. And of course, Sano and Reiko's relationship continues to be interesting.
I don't know if I'll continue with this series but this was a pretty good mystery and it has a totally unexpected ending.
Wrong genre............2004-08-03
I've followed the series, finding that Ms. Rowland's characters interest me. Hitherto, her sexual situation depictions have not been so far into gratuity that we couldn't either ignore them, or claim they worked somewhat within the plot, but in this book, we are served an entirely new level of graphicly lurid sex that might well qualify this book as pornographic. She's certainly using this book as a vehicle to explore presenting explicit and detailed accounts of sexual behaviour,(bordering on and crossing over into perverse), including an account of an incident where Reiko,(our heroine, disguised as a maid), is forced to voyeurism of sex that includes insertion of a hard-boiled egg into a woman's genitalia.
While I am not a proponant of censorship- I think you can read whatever you want- I DO think that some note as to graphic content of this kind should be made by the pro reviewers and Amazon's commentary, and I think that Ms. Rowland might do better to decide just what she's offering us here. Is she a mystery writer? Or a purveyor of erotica? This book might best be classified as the latter......
As for the rest of the book, the plot itself is again, of interest, her details are beautifully written and rather prosaic, her characters are fun,(although the mimmering, insipid, melodramatic women sometimes become irritating), but once again,Ms.Rowland indulges in the tiresome device of constant "questionmark endings". Could she have--? Will he find--? Will our hero--? Chapter after chapter, this becomes a bit on the insulting side, and I found myself cringing each time, thinking "how trite, there's a better way."
It's likely that I'll keep buying the series, because I'm a compulsive character follower and enjoy period fiction,(REALLY fiction-this book isn't particularly accurate about Japanese culture, but then, Ms. Rowland isn't Japanese...),like to see how they turn out, but I'm certainly hoping that Ms. Rowland realizes that erotica doesn't excuse a sophomoric writing style and is not a substutute for scenario developement. It's just rather cheap book thickener and I found myself wondering if I wasn't being forced, along with Reiko, into voyeurism, as I kept reading in an effort to not miss something pertinant to the mystery. She might actually consider studying up on period Japanese history between books.......
Will Ms. Rowland continue to escalate her level of graphic erotica? Will she learn that plot complexity and technical accuracy are far more interesting to mystery readers than sexual disgust? Will she ever figure out how to avoid the chronic question mark? Will Amazon identify the sexually explicit books a bit better in future?
???????????????
Best yet.......2004-08-03
After having devoured the other 8 books in the series, I found that Perfumed Sleeve gave a refreshing twist to the Sano Ichiro series. It finally gave the reader some relief from the mounting tensions of the previous books and opened up a new chapter in Sano's life. I am waiting with bated breath for Laura Joh Rowlands next book and am curious to see where she takes the new plot line.

Interesting.......2006-01-27
The bit of info this book offers is interesting, as well as valuable in getting to know the people & culture. My knowledge of both areas is increased. The reading is interesting enough to maintain one's interest. I didn't want to put it down until I finished the little book, once I started to read it.
Get some culture, Hispanic-style!.......2002-09-19
These 73 "points" on Hispanic Culture give insight in areas you may have puzzled over. The alphabetical arrangement of points may seem awkward, e.g., the second point is "Approaching strangers in public to ask something," but it does yield a pleasing eclecticism.
And there's a fine index to zero in on particular topics along with a helpful bibliography. The emphasis is on "little-c" culture -- those subtle elements of behavior in daily interaction that can add to culture shock if not understood. The points pertain to the entire Spanish-speaking world, and distinctions are often made between different countries. This will be a great help to you if you are traveling in a Spanish-speaking land.
Passport has put out other books in this series: The Russian Way, The German Way, The Italian Way, The French Way, etc. I've gleaned fascinating tidbits from several of them, but haven't found them intriguing enough to make part of my home library as I did The Hispanic Way.
Great little book!.......1999-06-18
I work at a Spanish language school in Costa Rica (ilisa.com) and we give this book to students on special occasions. It deals with and explains a lot of issues that people encounter when learning Spanish here. If you deal with Hispanics a lot or are going to live in Latin America, get this book!

An easy-to-use guide especially meant to be used and enjoyed by bird lovers.......2006-08-07
Hardcover for durability and spiral-bound to lay flat for easy reference, The Songbirds Bible is a straightforward, visual directory of 100 of the most common and beloved songbirds in North America. Ornithology professor Dr. Noble S. Proctor applies his 40 years of field experience to create detailed entries for each species, including descriptions of distinctive plumage colors, origin, behavior, distribution in North America, feeding and migration habits, how to attract a given species to one's garden, and much more. Highly detailed color illustrations of each species aid in visual identification, and an accompanying music CD of birdsongs will help both novice and seasoned birdwatchers recognize different species by song. An easy-to-use guide especially meant to be used and enjoyed by bird lovers.
Well done!.......2006-05-07
No matter how many bird identification books you own, this one is a new treasure to add to your collection. It is well presented - especially for the beginner birder - and makes it easy to learn how to match the call/song with the bird. Simplistic, yet very specific in it's information, The Songbird's Bible is much more user friendly than any of the Peterson CD's on Birding By Ear. Illustrations are wonderful.
Well done!

Customer Reviews:
Disappointing--better alternatives.......2003-10-11
I have three Spanish verb books: this one as well as Christopher Kendris's "501 Spanish Verbs" and Alfredo Gonzalez Hermoso's "Spanish Verb Manual." "The Complete Handbook of Spanish Verbs" was a real disappointment, and my least favorite of the three. It looks like oversized typewritten pages reduced to fit an already large 8 1/2 x 11 inch format, so the type is small and difficult to read and there is a tremendous amount of wasted white space (I wish Amazon.com would allow one to "look inside" this book, to prove what I am saying). But aside from the poor layout, the book is badly organized and frustrating to use, especially when compared to my favorite of the three, the "Spanish Verb Manual" by Hermoso, a great book that is half the physical dimensions but contains more information, is expertly organized and contains very helpful visual aids (color highlighting of specific persons and tenses of verbs that are irregular) which makes it is a pleasure rather than a pain to use. Interestingly, BOTH books are published by the same company (Passport Books / NTC), but "Spanish Verb Manual" by A. G. Hermoso is much better.
None better.......2002-05-30
Absolutely the finest verb handbook available. What it lacks in polish (it's not an attractive layout), it gains in its thorough treatment of Spanish verbs. They're all there! Bypass the "501" books and use this instead.
Extremely Helpful.......2000-03-21
I found this book extremely helpful once I went over it with a friend that is Hispanic. I needed help with the different tenses but once we went over it, it was of great help.
It is a shame that most beginning classes only teach the present tense of a verb. I would recommend this for anyone that wants a better understanding of Spanish Verb Cong.
I am a beginner that is teaching myself. This book may be easier for students with more of a background.
All spanish verbs you can possibly think of are conjugated!.......1998-11-17
I think this is a truly amazing book, since not only does it give all the conjuagated verb forms and the lists of verbs following the same pattern, but also makes you think, how to conjugate verbs in certain tenses and translate them in english, even though English translation is there anyways. It's a great help to me in university level spanish and I think it would be to anyone who wants to learn the language and speak it correctly, verbs being very essential parts of the sentences. The authors are geniuses for making this book really worthwhile!
This book enabled me to learn and function in 12 months........1998-07-07
This book was the essential piece of enabling me to learn spanish in 12 months. With manufacturing plants in Mexico, I needed to add Spanish to my English and French. This book enabled me to use 80% of all spanish verbs and all their tenses within 2 months. I have used this book in teaching spanish courses at my work and will vouch for its use.

Customer Reviews:
The Best so far.......2007-08-27
I have studied nutrition for 40 years and this brings it all together. It is the best book on the subject of the four that I have read. Unfortunately, it does not mention that FARMED salmon usually contains 5 to 7 times the harmful fatty acids that the same amount of wild salmon has, and that flax seed is not a good substitute for omega-3 fish oil, because humans cannot convert it efficiently. Mice and fish can and that had not been taken into accoount until recently.
Review of Challem's The Inflammation Syndrome.......2007-06-27
In my view, even his trademarking of phrases does not distract from his comprehension of nutrition biology. Howwever, his review of supplements reminds me of the writing of automotive columnists. There are few commercial products to which he is opposed. This is a useful and well written book. I'd also highly recommend Stop Inflammation Now! by Dr Richard M. Fleming. I'd avoid the book entitled The Anti-Inflammation Diet and Recipe Book by Jessica K. Black. I have no problem with her N.D. credentials, but question her biases and abandonment of scientific method to support her assertions.
Inflammation Syndrome by Jack Chellam.......2007-06-22
Jack Chellam's "Inflammation Syndrome" is one of the best books on diet I've read. The author focuses on the discovery that most diseases start with an inflammatory process and emphasizes how certain foods cause inflammation in your body. Mr. Chellam discusses many diseases such as cancer, allergies, diabetes, obesity, sports injuries and depression to name a few. "The Inflammation Syndrome" helps the reader rediscover the way humans ate prior to the agricultural boom and mass production of so called "food items" that have led to many diseases we have today. Each chapter is filled with helpful information that can help direct oneself to a better life diet.
The anti-inflammatory diet outlined in the "Inflammation Syndrome" has reversed a chronic digestive problem I've suffered with all my life. I was first attracted to Jack Chellam's book because he discusses that most vegetable oils (corn, soybean, safflower etc) can cause inflammation and the frying of them is a double-wammy. The author discusses proper diet, anti-inflammatory supplements, and the side effects of some anti-inflammatory medications. For example, aspirin is known to cause permanent cartilage deterioration in the joints.
The "Inflammation Syndrome" is filled with useful information and is a must read.
View of another nutrition writer.......2007-04-12
Inflammation is an important topic, and until recently, badly neglected by the medical community. Now there are too many books adding to the prattle by those who know too little. This one stands out as comprehensive and easily understandable. Jack Challem does better than I do in HONEST NUTRITION.
Informative.......2007-02-23
I enjoyed this book and would recomend this highly to anyone who is interested in improving the quality of their health.
Book Description
Crook's Corner is a landmark in North Carolina and beyond. Bon Appetit called it "a legend." Travel and Leisure described it as "country cookin' gone cool." A reviewer for the Washington Post said, "I have yet to eat an average meal at Crook's Corner—the food is consistently outstanding, sort of nouvelle down home." And Delta Sky rated it "the best place to eat in Chapel Hill, in North Carolina and possibly on earth."
It's that good, and it has sustained its reputation since 1982, when legendary Southern chef Bill Neal, author of three popular cookbooks, opened the restaurant with partner Gene Hamer.
For more than a decade now, Bill Smith has presided over the kitchen, bringing his creative cuisine to an ever-growing, always enthusiastic crowd who have come to associate dining at Crook's with good company, great food, and a belief that every meal is reason for celebration.
Bill Smith's recipes are marvelously uncomplicated: Tomato and Watermelon Salad, Fried Green Tomatoes with Sweet Corn and Lemon Beurre Blanc, Pork Roast with Artichoke Stuffing, Scallops with Spinach and Hominy, Really Good Banana Pudding, and Honeysuckle Sorbet. Structured around the seasons and inspired by the abundant local produce, these recipes reinvent classics of the Southern culinary tradition and offer up imaginative interpretations of bistro fare.
Seasoned in the South captures the flavors of the freshest seasonal foods and the spirit of one of the South's liveliest and most innovative kitchens.

Well done.......2007-02-06
It's a good, readable cookbook about an unconventional style of cooking. It doesn't have Crooks' recipe for shrimp & grits, though, which I was hoping to find there.
A gathering of unique recipes from Catfish Amandine to Corned Ham.......2006-01-09
Seasoned In The South isn't just another cookbook compendium your usual Southern fare, but a representation of the 'new bistro' cuisine of the South: light, airy, and gourmet. Crook's Corner has been a Southern restaurant since 1982 and author Bill Smith is one of its cornerstones; so he's in the perfect position to present this new bistro food to a wider audience than the South. Traditional melds with classic Southern dishes in a gathering of unique recipes from Catfish Amandine to Corned Ham.
Favorite Recipes (so far).......2005-12-01
Sauteed Leeks with (Savoy) Cabbage was wonderful at the Thanksgiving table. We added a little spinach too. A few other tastes I've fallen for completely and often: Wild Mushroom Pasta and Mashed Rutabagas. The Persimmon Pudding. Fresh Tomato Pasta -- love the addition of a little butter to this quick dish. Fried Green Tomatoes ... great alongside a big breakfast of good bacon and eggs. The rest of the fall recipes I haven't tried (though will go-to masa for Fried Oysters this weekend and Aunt Hi's Osyter Stew very soon.) ...Looking forward to the Winter chapter and am most interested in the house-cured ham.
This is a keeper!.......2005-10-17
For those who don't know, Crook's Corner is a well-known eatery in Chapel Hill, North Carolina. It has received much national attention and praise for the fabulous food and its chef of more than ten years, Bill Smith.
If you've read my cookbook reviews you know that cooking is not one of my talents or interests. Consequently I enjoy cookbooks that are simple, use ingredients that everyone tends to have in their kitchen and make me look really, really good (like I actually know what I'm doing and I do it well.) Oh, and the food must taste wonderful when it's served.
Bill Smith's Seasoned in the South: Recipes From Crook's Corner And From Home is not only all that, it is truly country cooking for everyone! And the very best thing is that if you don't like to cook or just don't want to, you'll have a wonderful and mouth-watering time reading it like a novel. Smith has included bits and pieces of personal stories about himself, friends, family members and even former President Jimmy Carter. This cookbook is lip-smacking scrumptious and you'll be saying, "Ah, that's how it's done!"
My favorite recipes: Baked Winter Squash Soup (I can't wait for autumn!); it makes me think of crisp fall days with leaves gently falling from the trees. Pork Roast with Sauerkraut; I have everything but the pork roast in my kitchen and it reminds me of Saturday night supper. Ah memories! Now meat loaf is one of my specialties. But Smith's meat loaf with mushroom gravy is a winner! Sorry Mr. Smith, I still like mine better, but this one is fantastic! My Mashed Potatoes are grand and I can picture my grandmother at the sink chatting and mashing them by hand. The Quick Jambalaya is easy and mighty tasty. The pineapple upside-down cake is a must make and the Persimmon Pudding From Crook's Corner sounds scrumptious. I haven't made this one yet, but I will! Thank you, Bill Smith, Armchair Interviews says your cookbook is a keeper, and I will continue to use it.
A culinary reputation fulfilled...........2005-10-06
An intriguing selection of marvelously simple recipes -- organized by season -- from famed Chapel Hill restaurant "Crook's Corner" and creative chef Bill Smith. The varied influences of Southern, fusion, Latin and French country-esque styles are apparent in a range of dishes from Fried Green Tomatoes with Sweet Corn and Lemon Beurre Blanc, Figs with Ham and Sauce Bellevue to Soup Dakar, a mulligatawny-like chicken soup. The Green Tabasco Chicken is deceptively simple and tasty. Next spring I plan on trying the Honeysuckle Sorbet....
