Book Description

It’s spring in Buffalo, New York. At sprawling St. Paul’s Hospital, new interns rush through the halls, staff doctors scramble to catch their protégés’ mistakes, and everyone is aware of one unrelenting threat: A new and vicious strain of severe acute respiratory syndrome (SARS) has hit America hard and is menacing the hospital like a wolf at the door. Wrapped in spacesuit-like garb to search for every possible source of infection, the hospital staff desperately tries to protect the lives of patients–and of each other. Yet despite St. Paul’s best efforts, people are dying.

In this chilling medical landscape, no one notices the slight spike in the death rate in a palliative care ward. The prevailing attitude is “They’re supposed to die. That’s why we call them terminal.” When these same patients complain of terrifying near-death experiences, the hospital staff attributes it to delirium caused by medication. But when ER chief Dr. Earl Garnet gets blamed for the unexpected death of a patient, he defies protocol and opens an independent investigation. He quickly becomes suspicious that something far more sinister than disease is killing the hospital’s most vulnerable patients.

For Garnet, looking into the deaths means rattling relationships that have been built over years–relationships with several men and women he once trusted but now must doubt. With the SARS epidemic spinning out of control and a storm of suspicion, fear, and mistrust raging through the corridors of St. Paul’s, the hospital is rocked by a horrifying crime: A respected researcher is found brutally murdered. And his executioner may be ready to strike again.

With brilliant pacing, scalpel-sharp suspense, and an unmatched knowledge of the workings of a big-city hospital, Peter Clement is a thriller writer in a league of his own. In his new work, he takes us on a galvanizing, frightening, and constantly fascinating journey set on the front lines of medicine–where some dangers can be prevented and others can only be feared.

5 out of 5 stars Great book.......2007-09-05

This was my first book by Peter Clement, it was great. Grabs your imagination from the first page and holds it to the last! I have been a Robin Cook fan for a long time, Mr. Clements is giving him serious competition.

4 out of 5 stars Very thrilling and a page turner but..........2006-05-10

As a registered nurse and thriller enthusiast, I was eager to read Peter Clement's 'The Inquisitor'. It is the first book by Clement that I have read.
As far as keeping your attention, I totally think the author nailed it. There are numerous twists and turns in the plot to make you read one more page before going to bed, and then another page...
The medical information is fairly accurate although there were a few times reading it I thought to myself, "Has he worked in a hospital lately?" Some of the terms he uses seem antiquated but once I got over that, I enjoyed the book immensely.
A last note is that the author generally depicts nurses as a group of not-too-high-of-calibre people who surely are lower than doctors. However, he does balance this out somewhat with a few nurse characters who are liked and well-respected in the book.
This all said, I definitely recommend this book!

5 out of 5 stars Being a Detective?.......2006-04-15

Dr. Earl Garnet in this book uncovers some amazing situations through the hospital which lead to various functions of the hospital, and how they are able to handle cases that come into the hospital. The hospital administrator is able to work in connection with Earl to look for some of these disturbing, yet interesting adventures that helps brings things to a closure. This book is recommended for anyone who is wnating an exhilirating, yet mysterious book to read.

2 out of 5 stars book is not well written.......2006-02-05

Peter Clement might be considered a wonderful novelist when it comes to medical thrillers, but I found his work to be full of cliches. He also switches point of view between first and third person which I found to be very jarring, completely taking me out of the story.

He tries the red herring approach, but that doesn't work either because the threads he weaves aren't all that believable to me. It's true he has the medical background, but he characterization felt stiff. His characters were flat, plus he told more than showed the action...or he did both.

I don't want to be told he's angry, I want to be shown. Also, his attempts at showing romance, I felt, were clumsy. I've read several books by Michael Palmer, Robin Cook, and a few other authors, and when I placed one of Palmers and Clements side by side, I couldn't help but notice that I felt as if I was peering over Palmer's characters' shoulders whereas with Clement felt the need to explain absolutely everything. Very annoying. One last thing, he needs to keep his exclamation points in check.

5 out of 5 stars "Inquisitor" will keep you on the edge of your seat turning pages..........2006-01-04

St Paul's Hospital in Buffalo, NY is under seige by the SARS virus. Staff and patients alike have to be gowned and protected from an invisible menace.

Death tolls are rising. It's expected people will die at St. Paul's no matter how hard the docs fight against it. But, Dr. Earl Garnet, the new VP/Medical and Chief of the ER is seeing patterns he doesn't like. Terminal patients in the Palliative Care Unit are passing sooner than they are supposed to--and some who are not dying are reporting Near Death Experiences. Digging just a little further, he discovers many of those patients report a person hovering over their beds asking them questions as they are dying.

So, what's happening? Do they have an Angel of Mercy euthanizing their patients or is their resident NDE researcher engaging in some extracurricular activity?

What I really like about this story is while Clement lays out the clues, there are so many hospital workers tied in the situation and guilty for reasons both good and bad. This book not only provides a good read, but gives the reader some pause to consider paincare and the end of life. Very well done and worth looking into more of Clement's stories to find out what else Dr. Earl Garnet has experienced.

3 out of 5 stars Not the best story!.......2002-08-19

New reader of the Battletech series. A decent book, the story was pretty good until it got near the end. The mech battles toward the begining started to get less descriptive and some enemy commanders seemed to become invincible. The commander's mech in the last battle would take loads of damage and knock the other ones out with a couple shots.

This is a good book but probably not the best in the world.

1 out of 5 stars This book was terrible!.......2001-10-30

As a Battletech fan of more than six to seven years, I have seen many books written by many authors. This one though, is by far the worst i have ever seen before. Gressman has consistently disappointed me with his poor, immature writing style. Not only is his style that bad, his editors are possibly even worse. I apologize for the harshness of my criticism but as a high school freelance writer, even I could write better than this.

In DaggerPoint, the dialogue is poorly written and very melodramatic. The action is short and exaggerated. Seeing Colonel Paul Calvin in an 80 ton Victor go toe to toe with a 100 ton Atlas and Calvin coming out virtually unscathed is very unrealistic. Gressman tries way too hard to make the HORRORS of WAR so TERRIBLE and so VERY CHEESY (sarcasm). He tries to show it with the most melodramatic of scenes and disgustingly sappy display of dialogue and imagery. I've written things at 3am better than that. Christ, Gressman needs to either go back to high school level creative writing or get a job elsewhere cuz his writing is poisoning the minds of young readers.

3 out of 5 stars Good start bad ending.......2000-11-16

Personally I enjoyed this novel, that is until I got to the end. It was too quick and rushed. The story ending itself was confusing and plain stupid. The ELH were sent to Milos to take the world for a further staging ground inro the Capellan Confed. but at the end of the novel General Edwin was forced to give up the now taken planet because Arden Sortek said so, and would not send in the rest of the Brigade to help. Put simply, there was no point to the raid at all. They got there took the planet, defended, lost many troops and the left leaving behind proberly a Battlion or too destroyed units. Still. up until that point it was a good book with Mr Gressmen, improving his writing style amazingly well.

      1 out of 5 stars Quite a letdown.......2000-08-23

I'm a huge fan of the Battletech novels, I enjoy the evolving story line and snatch up new books as fast as I can, unfortunately I wish I had skipped this one.

The story takes place on the planet Milos with the ELH, one of the crack mercenary units in the inner sphere sent to retake a planet conquered from the St. Ives compact by the Capellen confederation. Sent there by Victor Davion and Theodore Kurita, on a promise of a change in the star league which is never mentioned later in the novel. The characters are bland, the mech combat is even more bland and the ending is slow and boring. There are a number of historical and technical mistakes, along with the 'Immortal warrior' type of combat (the enemy commander dropping mechs in a single shot while shrugging off massive amounts of damage).

My biggest problem, and if you're going to read the novel I suggest you skipping this part, was the way the ELH was handled the author quoted the Light horse motto countless times on "never leaving a man behind", which they do, with hardly a second thought. During the final battle their drop ships, their only passage off the planet are destroyed by 2 men running through a chain link fence, past 2 sentries into an open door and planting a bomb. Excuse me, but the ELH are a CRACK military unit, as mentioned by the author probably 10 times throughout the novel. They are on a hostile planet, under siege by a Capellan line regiment and the only protection they have for their multi billion c-bill drop ship are *2* sentries, and a chain link fence? laughable.

This novel contains none of what makes the battletech universe fun and exciting, no politics, no heroes, no massive mech battle, nothing.

3 out of 5 stars Decent, yet not nearly the best.......2000-07-21

This was about the tenth book in the Battletech series, and it is NOT the best book I have read. The rushed feeling in the end made the plot lose a fraction of it's luster.

Also, Mr. Gressman needs to research into other books and clan history. The Tau glaxy was not from the Nova Cats, but was the Smoke Jaguar's galaxy, commanded by Devon Osis, the was beaten severely by the joint efforts of the Nova Cats and the mercenary group, the Northwind Highlanders.

However it was still a decent book, and kept up with the continuing battle against the Cappellan Confederation.

      4 out of 5 stars Jael's journey continues.......2006-08-08

This is the sequel to Dagger's Edge, in which Jael finds out the truth about her heritage while dealing with the crisis a religious cult brings on Allanmere, the city of which she is a princess. Now, one of her siblings has been chosen as heir, and Jael is free to do as she wishes. Inspired by her "Aunt" Shadow's wandering ways and her own desire to come to terms with her exotic heritage, Jael sets out on a journey for the furthest anyone from Allanmere has ever been... to the place where her father is from.

Tanis, her best friend, insists on going with her, and the mysterious assassin Blade gives her a request as well. (If you can call it a "request".) But Jael is determined to make it on her own terms and discover who she really is, no matter what. Unfortunately it's a wide, harsh world they live in, and traveling through it is no easy task. Then there's the fact that Jael has no idea how welcoming her father's people will be, what her father will be like, or what challenges she will face in order to find the piece of herself that she needs. Does she have the courage and perseverance to make it that far?

It would be hard for any book to replace Dagger's Edge in my heart anyway, but I don't feel that this book is as good as the first. There's some good character development of Jael and Tanis, with the difficult relationship developing between them, and seeing more of Anne Logston's magical medieval world is interesting, but there just isn't as much charm to this novel as the one before. Still, if you liked the first, I'd recommend reading this one. There are plenty of memorable moments, and you get to see Jael growing up while she and Tanis weather the ups and downs of their somewhat pell-mell journey.

      4 out of 5 stars Cool.......2005-02-24

I really enjoyed this book when I was younger, I've been trying to find it in stores. It's out of print, but it really should be reprinted. It's a good book for teens who like fantasy novels.

3 out of 5 stars Qiietly abrasive tale of murder and deception.......2005-05-19

Margaret Yorke ,while an Englishm woman who writes crime novels ,should not really be bracketed with the so called Golden Age writers like Christie or Allingham .She is less interested than such writers in creating classic whodunnits ,and instead looks at the deceptive reality that lies behind the peaceful outward apearance of things .The Point of Murder-originally published in the US as The Come on -illustrates this neatly .There is no secret as to the identity of the killer ;the murder is described and the book ,on the action level is really the tale of two separate hunts .One is the police hunt for the killer and the other is the tracking by the killer of potentila witnesses and his attempts to eliminate them .
The novel opens with two sharp pen portraits .Kate Wilson is a middle aged spinster looking after her venomous and deeply selfish mother who is nowhere near as ill as she pretends and compenstaes for her deep disappointment with life by treating her daughter like a skivvy ,one constantly at her beck and call .But Kate has a secret -at regular intervals ,feigning visits to a friend who is in the know ,she vanishes for weekends at a small hotel in the countryside where she has assignations with Doctor Stern a partner in the medical practice where she works as an administrator .One time she comes across a woman,Sandra King .who is struggling to change a puntured trye on her car .She is unable to be much help but a passing encylopedia sal;esman ,Gary Browne ,comes to the rescue .
Gary is a plausible young man who thinks women are fair game for his charms and he follows Sandra home and kills her when she resists his increasingly forceful attempts to get her into bed .
He rememebers Kate as a witness and also that she had mentioned the hotel whwre she was staying ,under the name Mrs Havant ,and he feels he must find and kill her to eliminate a witness able to connect him to the dead Sandra
The trail takes him eventually to Kate and he takes her prisoner with thre aim if killing her ;meanwhile the police are on his trail.
The book is as much character study as police procedural or crime novel ;Gary is an opportunist ,a man whose several jobs bespeak a footloose man with grandiose ambitions he is not dynmaic or clever enough to transform into reality ,not evil; just predatory . He is a man who sees no reason why he should not have what he wants ,simply because he wants it and rationalises his attack on Sandra on the grounds that she was " asking for it " Kate is a resourceful woman ,clear thinking and realistic ,able to take care of herself in an emergency
The book is also a study in hypocrisy -beneath the facade of middle class British life sexual secrets and snobbery abound and there is no real sense from the book that justice will be done .Browne may well escape lightly ,it is hinted ,and Kate a relatively blameless figure ,seesher vestiges of happiness threatened by events over which she has no real control

The prose is uncluttered and clear .The characterisation is diamond bright .The police work is accurately shown if undramatic
Lovers of the crime novel may feel happier with books where the stress is on detection rather than the consequences of criminal acts but overall this is a well written book that will appeal to those who like UK crim novelists, such as Rendell and James where detection is secondary to social analysis

This book was so informative. It walks you through every step of the process, from deciding which surgeon and procedure to the actual surgery to recovering and going home. There are even recipes and pages what you can expect to be able to eat at different stages of the recovery. Like all of the "Dummy" books, it is in regular every day English, not a lot of technical words. I took this book to a support group meeting the other day and one lady came up and said "Isn't that a great book". So if you are considering the surgery, I would highly recommend this book.

5 out of 5 stars Covering All the Bases.......2007-08-22

Of all the books I've read regarding WLS, this is, by far, the most comprehensive. It covers everything from making the decision and dealing with insurance companies to post-op healing and the life-long impact surgery has.

I can't speak highly enough about this book and would suggest it for anyone having (or considering) bariatric surgery.

5 out of 5 stars WLS for Dummies.......2007-08-22

I LOVE this book. I have referred to this book more than any book I have ever owned! It was my go to book before surgery, and I refer to it often since my surgery March 2007. This book covers everything! I highly recommend this for anyone considering surgery, or has had the surgery.

I couldn't find my favorite recipe for gingerbread this holiday season, so I tried the one from this book. It was truly awful. I think there must be an ingredient missing, perhaps some baking powder.

5 out of 5 stars Simply the best!!.......2004-05-17

I have to admit that when I bought this book years ago, I was disaponted because it has no pictures. (And I love pictures). But...something cought my eye: Ann Hodgman says in her book "My feeling is that every main dish is better if you add some bacon" and actually another million funny coments, but that is why I kept reading and reading.
First recipe I tried was the "Best Banana Bread", page 23 (my book opens at that page all by it self)"FANTASTIC".
Carrot Cake, page 47: OUT OF THIS WORLD (and I don't even like carrot cake).
I seriously belive that by the time I finished trying all this recipes I would be able to say that they are "all" magnificent.
Thank you Ann Hodgman for you great palate and your incredible sence of humor!

5 out of 5 stars A cookbook that fills all the senses.......2004-01-24

Love all the other 5-star-rating-reviews out there, for me, same same! This and Beat That are two cookbooks that you will want to read right through (and try every recipe) Hodgman is not only super funny, but she also seems to pipe up at exactly the right time during a recipe. You know, when you are asking yourself, "Hmmm, is it supposed to look like *that*??!!" Ann typically has a comment such as, "it's supposed to look like this..." Many of the techniques that she suggests in her recipes are ones that I have used again and again in my cooking without a book experiences. She just know how to tell it so right.

Some of the recipes are pretty involved, and she always says so up front, so at least you will know what you're getting yourself into. Run, to buy this book and get cookin' I tell ya! Then you will just have to have Beat That! as well.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent. One of my favorites.......2002-05-13

This is the type of cookbook you can sit around and read and really enjoy. It's funny. The directions are easy and very few recipes call for anything exotic. These are not the most low fat recipes or the most easiest recipes- but the best of the best recipes. But, that doesn't mean the meals are all hard or difficult to make, just that if they are a little bit time consuming, it promises to be worth the time. A fun read and great recipes. Enjoy

5 out of 5 stars A huge pleasure to read and cook from.......2002-04-04

For those of us who like to lie in bed and read cookbooks like other people read novels, Ann Hodgman's superb "Beat This!" is a surefire winner. You will find yourself nudging your bed partner to read aloud the funny parts--which is most of the book (I can't think of any other cookbooks you'd want to read aloud from, with the exception of Hodgman's wonderful sequel, aptly entitled "Beat That!").

Hodgman has been launched from the late lamented SPY magazine to writing cookbooks and although her trajectory might seem a little strange, I think she has landed exactly where she should. I love this woman AND her cookbooks! The title of the book refers to Hodgman's challenge to readers to come up with better recipes than she provides herein. It's a real challenge, believe me--everything I've tried from both this cookbook AND the sequel has been wonderful.

I can't finish this review without quoting at least briefly from Hodgman. The woman is a hoot:

[On Mom-Style Chocolate Cake] "This cake is straight out of a Norman Rockwell painting, but it tastes even better than . . . uh . . . paint and canvas, I guess. Even for a nice traditional cake, the best mixing method can be found in Rose Levy Beranbaum's 'Cake Bible,' which is such a good book that I think the Gideons should put it in hotel rooms instead of the regular Bible."

[on Perfect Fudge, if You're Lucky] "My problem has always been that 50% of the fudge I make turns out creamy and delicious, and 50% turns out like chips of flint."

[On The Best Regular (Or I Guess I Should Say Classic) Apple Pie] "Remind me why people like apple pie so much? Well, partly because of the cinnamon, or at least that's why I like it. It took a McDonald's apple pie, of all things, to make me realize how important cinnamon is. (I'm saying 'of all things' to make it sound as though I never eat at McDonald's.)"

Buy this book and cook and laugh--what a great combination!
