Greed, Land and Oil.......2006-07-13
That's what this first book in the Father John O'Malley series is about. This is an excellent mystery with a wonderful storyline as well. Ms. Coel's characters are believable and she keeps the plot moving along at a really nice pace. I really enjoyed this look at the life of the Native American on the Indian Reserve and also it gave me a chance to learn a little more about the Arapaho history. Father John is a wonderful character, and I look forward to reading more of his adventures in future books. And he and his sidekick Vicky have lots of motives to follow up on when an Indian tribal chief is found knifed in his tipi.
An enjoyable, satisfying read.......2005-08-17
Margaret Coel's mystery novel debut is a well-crafted, compelling thriller about how the ghosts of the past continue to haunt the present. I cared about all of her protagonists, but what's more, I also cared about the fates of minor characters. I wanted to know if Ernest would get his act together and reunite with his family and if Homer Lone Wolf's baby would live as much as I wanted to see all my questions about Harvey Castle's murder answered.
Coel lets her readers in on who the villains are fairly early in the novel, but the story remains compelling because you want to learn about the motives behind their actions. What terrible information did Harvey find in his historical research that someone would kill him for it?
Coel also excels at capturing the quiet dignity of the Arapaho people and at describing the Wyoming setting. I grew up in Wyoming, and her writing stirred memories of the bleak, oddly beautiful landscape I once knew so well.
A New Western Master.......2003-11-22
This is a first in a new series set in the Western US. It centres around an Arapaho reservation. The principal characters are a Jesuit priest and an Arapaho lawyer. The story itself is well written, the plot moves along at a good pace. The clues are fairly given, allowing the reader to follow along with the protagonist. If there is one thing that I found a little sterotypical was that all that the white people, with one exception, are out to rip off the Natives. I have no doubt that this goes on and went on. Yet, it would be better to have a mix, such as in the Tony Hillerman works. Still, an excellent read and an author I would continue to read.
Enjoyable mystery.......2003-11-13
Margaret Coel hits all the right notes in this first book of her series which takes place on an Indian Reservation in Wyoming. Father John O'Malley has been sent to the reservation after his battle with alcoholism during his previous post in Boston. His struggles with drinking have given him insight into the alcohol problem which is so prevalent among the Arapahos that he serves. Just before a festive powwow is to begin, Father John discovers the dead body of Harvey Castle, one of the tribal council members. He teams up with an Arapaho attorney, named Vicki Holden, and the two begin an investigation in order to protect Harvey's nephew who has been accused of the murder. Coel creates interesting characters, and both Father John and Vicki have past problems which give them more depth than many characters in mystery stories. Coel also does a good job of portraying the Arapaho culture and adds interesting details about things such as funeral customs, "Indian time", and the "moccasin telegraph". I look forward to reading the other books in this series.
Good start to series of mystery stories..........2003-09-05
My mom gave me six Margaret Coel novels, all about Father John O'Malley and Vicky Holden. Let me say, that at the time of this review I have already started the second book and it is even better than this one.
First off, the characters are realistic, painfully so. Real problems and real life issues insert themselves through-out the story. Yes, there is a murder on the reservation but Father John O'Malley has to worry about everything from a new assistant to his fight against the bottle.
The detailed pages within these books allow me to feel the wind off the plain, smell the food at the powwow and see the colors of the sky. A mixture of Rex Stout and Zane Grey!

Using Native Indians like this is just another form of murder - cultural murder. What is it with these people who get it into their [bad] brains to convert the people from their ways? Have they not done enough harm. Native people must resist being used like this. It is a disgrace.
Strong writing, powerful message.......2000-04-19
Dan Red Eagle has not only proven effective at reaching its original target audience of Native peoples in North America but is a great comic book in any case, regardless of race. Opops'kan leads his intended readers toward faith in Jesus Christ using their own style of language and familiar symbolism.

Enter the darkness and lose yourself in the dark path! Robert Stanek is perhaps one of the best writers of our time. His blockbuster debut book sold over 150,000 copies and worldwide sales of his books are quickly approaching 1 million.

A Significant Achievement and a series that deserves more praise and understanding........2007-06-06
Stanek has made and continues to make significant contributions to fantasy. He had a vision of a world with alternate histories and he put these alternate histories down in print in the form of alternate paths for readers - a novel idea of pure genius. Original ideas that good always are copied (and so this novel idea has been copied), regardless the genius and the implementation of this novel idea is hard to deny.
Stanek writes openly about the dark and light paths through the story. Elf Queen's Quest represents the start of the dark path. Keeper Martin's Tale represents the start of the light path. This was clear in everything I read about the early releases of both books, and should have been clear to early reader such as those 1-star reviews have been plastered at the top of this book's product page for almost six years now. Such reviews or not only unfair, they are tacky.
As others have said, the proper reading for adult readers of this sequence is Keeper Martin's Tale, Kingdom Alliance, Fields of Honor, and then Mark of the Dragon. Elf Queen's Quest is meant to be read last as a start to the dark path. In the years since this was released, I have waited expectantly for the sequel dark path books. I can only hope Stanek will listen to fans and not naysayers and soon publish the dark path sequels.
This is a fantasy series that renewed my faith in fantasy. It has made a new fantasy lover out of me, and every fantasy reader should give it a chance. Overall, this is a very impressive series with depth and realism.
Good but not the place to start.......2006-09-15
Robert Stanek's Ruin Mist books are fantastic. The books are available in adult and children's editions. For adults, the books are the ones in the Ruin Mist Chronicles:
Keeper Martin's Tale
Kingdom Alliance
Fields of Honor
Mark of the Dragon
Elf Queen's Quest is the first book in the Ruin Mist Dark Path, which is an alternate telling of the story. Read Elf Queen's Quest only if you enjoyed the previous four and can't wait for the new Lost Ages series.
If you've read the Ender books by Orson Scott Card, you probably understand how good an alternate telling of a story can be. In Stanek's Elf Queen's Quest, the differences in the telling are more subtle, but if you've read the other books, you can see the differences, and can guess at the direction of the dark path.
Good with caveats.......2005-12-16
Ruin Mist Chronicles is an excellent series, but you need to read the books in proper order. It goes Keeper Martin's Tale, Kingdom Alliance, Fields of Honor, Mark of the Dragon. The Ruin Mist Dark Path if you've read it, provides an alternate telling of the story of Ruin Mist. I have an original edition of Keeper Martin's Tale and Elf Queen's Quest. Both begin with a preface that explain this, but a friend of mine who got the books recently has a different edition and there's no preface.
What the Keeper Martin's Tale preface says is:
In 15 BD, the Watcher, Xith, is recorded as saying that "History belongs to the teller and is only as reliable as the teller's recollection of it." This is the truth of the matter, and why Keeper Martin, head of the lore keepers, chose to pen his own version of the histories of Ruin Mist before and after the return of Dalphan the Wanderer. Through Keeper Martin's gathering of history from various individuals, the story of Ruin Mist is retold in these pages. Keeper Martin would like you to think that his version of the history is the only truthful and correct account but then again, history belongs to the teller and is only as reliable as the teller's recollection of it.
The Elf Queen's Quest preface doesn't tell where this version of the story originates. The preface is about Queen Mother and the book's prologue does begin with Seth, so that may be a hint.
If you read and liked the original 4, this is a good follow up, but it's not a sequel series.
Anyone notice all the strange negative reviews of this and other books by this author? .......2005-10-20
Has anyone else noticed how many strange negative reviews/comments Stanek's books have received on Amazon and other places recently? They're all similarly worded and use similar phrasing. Most finish by basically telling people to go read George Martin instead. That's very strange. Even stranger is I found the same similarly worded negative reviews/comments when I want back through the old reviews of this book and Keeper Martin's Tale. Again, many reviews end by telling people to go read Martin or other authors but more times than not Martin is also included in the list.
Strange also how, Keeper Martin's Tale had three small reviews, basically one or two lines, in the 2 months after it was published and then a fourth review in April from "Bifford the Mage" that says this:
--
I've Been Had., April 7, 2002
There is something fishy going on here. This is nowhere near a 5-star book. The writing is extremely amateurish, with awkward phrasing, stilted language, and grammatical errors throughout. The style seems more suited for the 9- to 12-year-old crowd than adults... Save your money and skip this poorly-written book.
--
The second review of Elf Queen's Quest says this:
--
Not that good. April 11, 2002
I have read many times how people compare this book and "Keeper Martin Tales" to the "Ice and Fire" trilogy by G.G.Martin. Let me tell you something: Stanek's books are NOTHING like Martin's masterful works. "Elf Queen" and "Keeper Martin" are not even as good as "Wheel of Time" by Jordan, and I got sick of "Wheel" a long time ago! It is not as these are bad books, but certainly not what I expected after reading those glowing reviews.
--
This book, Elf Queen's Quest, had exactly 1 review when the above review was written. Many similarly worded reviews have been submitted since. Seems like some people (or more likely one person in particular) write bad reviews of books to get their kicks and push other authors, and that's just plain wrong. It takes a special kind of psychopath to keep writing bad reviews of an author's books under a variety of pseudonyms. Since this pattern has continued for the past 3 years here on Amazon, on forums, on other sites, this person or persons seem to still be at it, and that begs the question why?
The answer is probably this simple: Stanek has written a worthy epic fantasy and it had strong positive word of mouth. His books were probably pushing down some other book or author that was trying to a) break in to the market or b) compete in the market. So how do you kill the success of good books? You repeatedly bad mouth them on Amazon and other review sites, in a variety of forums and discussion boards post nasty comments, you get your friends and other people to do the same. Also, I'm not convinced it's George Martin fans doing this. Martin may just be the point and shuffle scapegoat.
Problem is these books are good, and they have continued on, but modestly and not with the success they started with. When I first saw this book and Keeper Martin's Tale, both were on the Amazon SciFi bestseller list. They remained on the list from about Feb 2002 to about Oct 2002 and then dropped off after several months of dirty tricks and negative publicity campaigning. There can be no doubt the dirty tricks and outright lies abouth these books have had their affect. They've tarnished the image and reputation of a good author, and probably ensured that the success of whatever competing book or author was trying to make it.
I picked up this book and the others in the series when I saw the same dirty tricks being used to harm sales of this author's books on Audible. At Audible, it was the same story. I saw this author's books on the bestseller list from about March 2005 to early October. The same dirty tactics of flooding the books with negative reviews, bad mouthing the books on discussion formums, and elsewhere was used to knock the book down. I haven't seen it on the bestseller list since. I guess it's mission accomplished for the dirty tricksters who for whatever reasons don't want this author's books to be successful. Problem is, these are good books and they continue on because of this, but the author will probably never get the critical success he deserves.
I read a lot of fantasy and sci-fi, and I can promise you that this series of books is among the best. This tale takes place mostly in the Kingdoms and the Reaches, lands of men and elves. The history of these kingdoms is expertly blended into the plot, and you effortlessly become emersed into the world. I can't overstate the skill with which the author draws the reader into his world. It feels as if this land, with its people, traditions and history is as real as our own. The series is supported to be four books - Keeper Martin's Tale, Kingdom Alliance, followed by The Fields of Honor and The Mark of the Dragon. Elf Queen's Quest is a retelling of the story in what the author calls The Dark Path.
who would possibly give this 5 stars?.......2005-10-04
It's been a couple of years since I was suckered into buying Robert Stanek's books. As a result, today I only buy one book in a series until I see if the author is worth reading. If I like the author, I'll go back and order more of his books. But I won't be buying any more of the Stanek books. They are just dreadful. Be wise. If those 5 star ratings have convinced you to buy his books, just buy one. If you like him, you can place another order. If you don't like him (and you won't) you'll only have thrown away a little money.

Customer Reviews:
I found this book offensive.......2007-02-27
There are two hypothetical families that the book follows throughout the course of the program. Lengthy backstories are given for both. One is a family where the wife dropped out of jr college when she married, and supported her husband financially through college, dropping her job as a secretary when she has her first child. This family lives in the midwest. The other family is ultimately a single Mom, living on the coast, who's husband leaves her because he feels emasculated by her career success. She gets the kids, since they "both know even without discussing it that they are primarily her responsibility".
I'm not looking for a book that covers every type of family everywhere, and I don't need it to be totally politically correct. But enough of a backstory is given here, that we can pretty much predict how these folks vote. (I'd also venture a guess as to how the author votes.) And the stories are completely irrelevant. Other books (like Supernanny's) focus on behaviors and techniques, and family dynamics are only discussed as they pertain to the children. This book devotes too much time to guilting women back into the kitchen, IMHO. While this is a fine choice for some, there are many modern families that this doesn't work for, for whatever reason.
If you're looking for a book with step-families, blended families, multi-cultural families, same-sex parents, stay-at-home-Dad's, extended families, dual-income families, or any other perfectly valid variation on Ward and June, look elsewhere. You won't find any of those in this book. You *will* find them in many parts of America.
Very Good.......2006-12-01
I do think that the book was very very helpful. It had comprehensive information written in a clear and friendly way. I am pretty sure every parent has something to benefit from reading this book. Even if you do not follow the 5-week program strictly, you can walk away with the general principles that the book draws your attention to. Very highly recommended.
Parenting the Strong Willed Child.......2006-08-04
Book is in great shape and shipped immediately!
Thanks,
This Book is a Lifesaver!.......2006-04-24
Some people think they can just let their kids do whatever and they'll just naturally be angels. Attachment Parenting is the term for that. Well, I tried that and ended up with kids that had the attitude "I can do whatever and get away with it." In other words, my kids ended up being, I hate to say it, spoiled! I checked this book out at the library and read it word-for-word and I cannot begin to tell you how much this book has changed my life. I don't say that lightly. My family has done a 180! All because of this book. This book has literally since Day 1 transformed me into a better mother, better wife, and better friend. You think the tips you get out of here will just make your kid better, no, it makes YOU BETTER! It gives excellent tips on how to communicate with your child, how to make yourself more patient when you feel like you are about to lose it, and how to improve your relationships overall. I feel like this is a more loving family. I am definitely going to go out and buy this book! I can't thank Rex and Nicholas enough. They are parents themselves and they really know kids.
A must!.......2006-04-06
Any parent with a strong-willed child really should read this. It shows you that you can help your child direct their actions. It gives hope -not to mention, suggestions that do work!

Fantastic cookbook!.......2007-07-03
I just bought this cookbook for a friend. My copy is well used already and is one of my favorites. I haven't made a recipe in it that we didn't just love. Some of the recipes are now standard company fare in our house, especially the whole grilled beef tenderloin with fire and spice and the black bean salad with mangos and shrimp. There's a lot of fun background information to read about the different ingredients and recipes, too. An excellent cookbook - highly recommended!
Good information.......2007-03-14
Good information about tropical fruits and vegtables. It reads like a good novel.
There's a Whole Lot of Florida in this Book.......2006-10-13
Miami Spice is one of the five best Florida/Gulf Coast cookbooks out there. Well, that's my opinion. I've been updating my Amazon "So You'd Like to Guides" and I have one on Key Lime Pie. Take a look at it if you want. Anyway, I've included fifty cookbooks (the maximum Amazon will allow) in all my guides, so I've had a chance to go through my collection. And quite a collection it is, I've got hundreds of cookbooks and I go through them all the time. That's my problem, how to organize them. While going through what I wanted to include in my guides, I started separating them into piles, the ones I couldn't live without and the ones, if I absolutely had to, I could give away as gifts, you know, like if we moved into a very small place.
Miami Spice is one I could never part with. I love the food and the atmosphere of Florida and the Gulf Coast, have spent a lot of time there, as I'm a sailing lady. I'm also somewhat of a gourmet chef. I spend a lot of time in the kitchen, or galley, depending if I'm at home in the States or on our boat in the Caribbean. The recipes here will make your family, or even just yourself, if you live alone, drool. They are mouthwatering good and that's the truth.

It's real, and real good........2006-05-23
The stunning chimichurri recipe alone makes this book worth buying. This trendy dish is showing up on menus around the country, but I've never had one better than this. Every time I've made it, folks have howled for the recipe. Plenty of other great and simple dishes, from adobo to fried garlic sauce to tangerine tuna.
An excellent resource that has never steered me wrong.......2005-02-23
That about sums this up. This book has it all. Very simple recipes with fantastic results. No pictures really, but that's not really a fault in my book. I've tried many, many of the recipes in this book (as well as in the author's "Healthy Latin Cooking" book) and have never been disappointed. As a spearfisherman, his recipe for Florida Lobster was truly appreciated by me and it is downright excellent. I have used it much to the delight of family and friends.
Definitely, if you enjoy latin-fusion type of cooking, and don't have the tweezer-food mentality of cooking (hello French Laundry and Nobu), then this book is for you. Get it without hesitation and you will be delighted. There's a reason why it was a Julia Child award winner.
