Customer Reviews:
much better read than the last title.......2007-08-15
This title is third in the Chocoholic Mysteries series, and a great addition to the series. The author's description of a frog-like character was interesting. I read this book in one sitting and was happy to find that the fourth title in the series was available.
I will continue with this series in spite of the heroine's annoying habit of substituting words with other words when she is nervous.
I wanted to like this book.......2007-07-28
Ever since reading the Diane Mott Davidson books I've been looking for more books that combine a love of food with good mystery reading. I was very disappointed with this one -- poorly written and clunky characters. I've tried several other authors of culinary mysteries and will have to keep trying...
good beach reading.......2007-07-12
this is in a series of several by nom de plum joanna carl - very fun and you can read in a day at the beach or pool this summer -
Is love in the cards?.......2005-11-26
Every time Lee and Joe make plans for a romantic night or something special to do, it seems someone is out to get them, after the town annoyance is found murdered. Is someone framing Joe for the murder?
Someone sure has it out for him. It was comical to read and I loved the parts about chocolate. Made me crave it!
This is a cozy mystery to read and you will enjoy it!
A Great Book.......2005-06-16
I think this book was a real page-turner, with the descriptions of the chocolates making my mouth water. This story is a suspenseful mystery story with a love story twisted cleverly into it. I highly recommend it to mature kids and above. Overall, this was a great book to read.
Book Description
Three thousand years before, the monstrous Dark had sprung from loathsome underground lairs to destroy most of humanity. Now they were again ravening and ruining in their blood-hunger. Only a few thousand people had managed to find refuge in the ancient fortress Keep of Renweth.
There, even the magic of the wizard Ingold Inglorion could offer them little hope against the Dark.
To defeat the savage horror, they must gain help from the Hidden City of Quo, to which all other wizards had been summoned. But Ingold could not pierce the walls of illusion that separated Quo from the world.
With his student, Rudy Solis, the old wizard set out to cross two thousand miles of dangerous desert to the City of Wizards.
What he might find there he could not know -- and dared not guess!
Customer Reviews:
Pleased.......2007-01-05
This is a great and entertaining book! The Characters all have well thought out personalities. The same goes for the plot. I enjoyed the book very much.
An excellent follow-up to The time of the Dark.......2004-10-04
This book got to me more that the first one. All the characters have been introduced in The time of the Dark. What lacks in action in this story, drama more than makes up for it.
The two reluctant heroes are separated in this second chapter of the trilogy. Rudy, with Ingold, has to travel to the Quo, the city of wizards in order to find counsel. Wait until you see what he finds instead! Meanwhile, Gil stays at the Keep of Dare and explores the secrets and mazes of that ancient structure millenias old.
As seen before, there is constant bickering between the factions stationned at the Keep and most of the times, we can see a similitude with how people act here in 2004. It doesn't matter where we are, humans will still be humans, with their weeknesses and strenghts.
I can't wait to start The armies of Daylight. What is the secret of the Dark? What ancient technology will Gil and Rudy uncover?
Riddles and secrets..........2003-07-28
This second book of the original trilogy really gets things moving in this world; the crisis of the Dark is fully upon the harried survivors. Only a hanfull of them have a possibility of coping with the situation... not Saving the Day, mind you; just coping. And they don't all play together nicely.
This book is about tangled messes and Gordian knots.
There are problems of politics, civic order, communication, isolation, betrayal, the mystery of the past, the terror of the present, the uncertainty of the future, and of course, the alienness of the Dark. The principal characters struggle to gain vital knowledge and help, while having to circumvent those in power (who have taken more immediate tactical solutions). In some ways, this is your classic Crisis Story situation. But it's all the details and discoveries specific to this world that make this one fascinating.
During the tale, several unsettling suspicions and implications draw together and begin to form a horrifying net of facts; things are even more bleak than we thought! Sure, not ALL of humanity will be killed, but the survivors (and their possible descendants) are gonna have a nasty time just staying alive in the crowded safety of the Keep, since nobody knows how people managed it last time this happened!
A good series, but not the best book in it.......2001-02-09
"The Walls of Air" is the sequel to Hambly's "The Time of the Dark". Although the characters are just as interesting to watch as in the previous book, the events move along much more slowly. I'd say that this book suffers from middle-book-itis, as it mostly spends time setting things up for the third book, "The Armies of Daylight".
I think that the SF Book Club published this trilogy in one volume many years ago; if you are new to the Darwath books, try getting that one volume instead of buying this reprint edition.
This is one of my favorite series by one of my favorite authors. If you have a low tolerence for journeys mental and spiritual, you'll find this book pretty sleep-inducing.
I actually liked it, but I like to watch Ingold work, and I find Gil's learning process and scholarly work facinating. There's lots of both in this book, unlike the more exciting first and last books.
One of my favorites!.......1998-04-19
This whole series is delightful and if Ms. Hambly writes as many of these as Anne McCaffrey's Pern and Andre Norton's Witch World, I wouldn't complain. An excellent sequel.

Escape to West Berlin
ASIN: 1550378090 |
Book Description
Based on true events from the time of the Berlin Wall.
When King Frack and King Frick divide their kingdom with a tall wall, Tamala and her brother send balloon messages over the wall to their beloved grandmother.
Then Tamala decides her family can reach their grandmother the same way: in a hot-air balloon! The family gathers all the materials they will need: cloth for the balloon, straw for the basket. But where to find a gas burner? With spies everywhere, their work is extremely perilous.
Nevertheless, Mother sews the material, Father weaves the basket, and Tamala and Abalon discover an old gas burner in a junkyard. After many nights of labor, their craft is ready and rises into the air. Guards on the wall spot them and fire their weapons, but the balloon sails safely over.
Happily, they successfully reach their destination, just as two families from East Berlin did in 1979! An endnote ties this story to the dramatic true event.
Key features:
Based on a true escape over the Berlin Wall in 1979
A captivating, page-turning suspense story
Stunning, evocative illustrations
Customer Reviews:
Not so fantastical!.......2004-06-20
This story seemed utterly fantastical to me-then I read that it was based on a true incident! (I know, I know -"Truth is often stranger than fiction.")
King Frick and King Frack have each inherited half the kingdom. They build a great stone wall that slices it in two. No one may cross the wall. Unfortunately it divides families from their relatives-in this story, little Tamala and Abalon and parents from Grandma and cousin Peter. The family sews together a huge balloon, attaching it to a basket outfitted with a gas burner.
One night they take off in their hot-air balloon, and sail over the wall, even while soldiers below attempt to shoot them down. They are reunited with their relatives.
The story is based on the wall constructed in 1961 to divide Berlin in two. In 1979, two East German families sewed a balloon four stories tall and sailed over the wall. (In 1989, the wall came down.)
"The Balloon Sailors" illustrates the bizarre circumstances that ideology and politics can visit upon citizens, and how some use great imagination and perseverance to overcome the barriers imposed upon them.
The heart-felt illustrations evoke folktales of old, depicting simple village folk and stereotypical kings.

A Wonderful Biography by Gen. Scott!.......1998-07-11
I have a autographed copy of this book and it's one of my most treasured books. It is a wonderful follow up to "God is My Co-Pilot". I have read it at least 10 times in the year that I have had it. It is a very compelling book... I just don't know how to desribe it. Every library that I know of has it, as well as God is My Co-Pilot. It's really not all that hard to find. If you are even the slightest remoteness interested in what it was like in China between 1942 and 1945 this is a exellent book. I don't know how to put it into words... I just love his books. I'm sorry to say that I've never been able to read any of the others (Flying Tiger: Chennault of China, Boring a Hole through the Sky, God is Still My Co-Pilot, just to name a few). He's now over 90 I know that he flew a F-15 Eagle at age 89. Your really not supposed to.. but somehow he convinced them he could. Most everyone I've told says that there must be another seat for the navigator that somebody else went sat in. But, I garrenty you that there is only ONE seat in a F-15 Eagle. In short he is a incredible man, and has a incredible life. And I quote:
"Claire Lee Chennault was a indivialist, and some of that indiviualty must have rubbed off on me because I to have been a indiviaulast.. a mavrick general, in my carrer. But first I had to meet him, and that took some doing. I had to lie cheat and surely steal. There is a saying "never steal anything small" well what I stole was a B-17E FLying Fortress. Right or wrong, under the surrcumstances I did it. It is a long story and I have to Start at the beginning."
this is his best book of all!.......1998-05-14
This book is the Generals best by far because it chronicles pretty much everything about the man himself. His story is proof of what happens if you persist. If you want to get the whole snapshot of my hero, Gen Bob Scott- then this is the book you need to read!! Trust me.
The life story of an American hero!.......1998-03-13
Robert Lee Scott is one of the heros of our century who faded from our collective memory long ago. His 1943 best-seller, God is my Co-pilot, made him famous during WWII, and The Day I Owned the Sky brings the reader up-to-date (Well, up to 1988, anyway) on the further adventures of this magnificent Flying Tiger. This book will take the reader from his humble beginnings in Georgia, to his wartime exploits, and into his fun-filled retirement. If you love books like Yeager and Press On! you'll love this one, too!
Great book. I know where some are........1998-01-10
This is another great book by Gen. Scott. I feel that I am right in the cockpit with him. The last time I looked, there was a limited number of autographed editions available in the Air Force Museum gift shop at Robins AFB. Ga. Contact the gift shop for availability.
Book Description
On the demand side, exporters and strategic planners focusing on self-contained, window or wall-type air conditioning machines in Australia face a number of questions. Which countries are supplying self-contained, window or wall-type air conditioning machines to Australia? How important is Australia compared to others in terms of the entire global and regional market? How much do the imports of self-contained, window or wall-type air conditioning machines vary from one country of origin to another in Australia? On the supply side, Australia also exports self-contained, window or wall-type air conditioning machines. Which countries receive the most exports from Australia? How are these exports concentrated across buyers? What is the value of these exports and which countries are the largest buyers? This report was created for strategic planners, international marketing executives and import/export managers who are concerned with the market for self-contained, window or wall-type air conditioning machines in Australia. With the globalization of this market, managers can no longer be contented with a local view. Nor can managers be contented with out-of-date statistics which appear several years after the fact. I have developed a methodology, based on macroeconomic and trade models, to estimate the market for self-contained, window or wall-type air conditioning machines for those countries serving Australia via exports, or supplying from Australia via imports. It does so for the current year based on a variety of key historical indicators and econometric models. In what follows, Chapter 2 begins by summarizing where Australia fits into the world market for imported and exported self-contained, window or wall-type air conditioning machines. The total level of imports and exports on a worldwide basis, and those for Australia in particular, is estimated using a model which aggregates across over 150 key country markets and projects these to the current year. From there, each country represents a percent of the world market. This market is served from a number of competitive countries of origin. Based on both demand- and supply-side dynamics, market shares by country of origin are then calculated across each country market destination. These shares lead to a volume of import and export values for each country and are aggregated to regional and world totals. In doing so, we are able to obtain maximum likelihood estimates of both the value of each market and the share that Australia is likely to receive this year. From these figures, rankings are calculated to allow managers to prioritize Australia compared to other major country markets. In this way, all the figures provided in this report are forecasts that can be combined with internal information sources for strategic planning purposes.
Book Description
Shortly before her death in 2004, Elisabeth Kübler-Ross and David Kessler, her collaborator, completed the manuscript for this, her final book. On Grief and Grieving is a fitting completion to her work. Thirty-six years and sixteen books ago, Kübler-Ross's groundbreaking On Death and Dying changed the way we talk about the end of life. Now On Grief and Grieving will profoundly influence the way we experience the process of grief.
On Death and Dying began as a theoretical book, an interdisciplinary study of our fear of death and our inevitable acceptance of it. It introduced the world to the now-famous five stages: denial, anger, bargaining, depression, and acceptance. On Grief and Grieving applies these stages to the process of grieving and weaves together theory, inspiration, and practical advice, all based on Kübler-Ross's and Kessler's professional and personal experiences, and is filled with brief, topic-driven stories. It includes sections on sadness, hauntings, dreams, coping, children, healing, isolation, and even the subject of sex during grief.
"I know death is close," Kübler-Ross says at the end of the book, "but not quite yet. I lie here like so many people over the years, in a bed surrounded by flowers and looking out a big window....I now know that the purpose of my life is more than these stages....It is not just about the life lost but also the life lived."
In one of their final writing sessions, Kübler-Ross told Kessler, "The last nine years have taught me patience, and the weaker and more bed-bound I become, the more I'm learning about receiving love."
On Grief and Grieving is Elisabeth Kübler-Ross's final legacy, one that brings her life's work profoundly full circle.

Customer Reviews:
A most comforting and deeply empathic book for all those who grieve the loss of a loved one........2007-09-28
When my father died of aortic stenosis six weeks ago, I was devastated. I had not anticipated my loss to be felt as intensely, for my grief to be so deeply experienced, so raw and debilitating. Having been a Masters-degreed level social worker for 28 years I knew, however, that reading books about grieving, seeking out grief counseling and attending bereavement groups would be profoundly healing experiences for me. Dr Kubler-Ross's and David Kessler's book ON GRIEF and GRIEVING has been the sixth book I have read about grieving and it has been the most helpful. Their stating "we believe with all our hearts that even in death, our loved one still exists..and that "the body is just a coat, a suit of clothes that we wear during our lifetime...a shell, a cocoon..." helped me like you would not believe. I had suffered a great deal of guilt about not being as helpful and supportive to my father as I wish I could have been in his final days. The book touched my core by giving me permission to forgive myself, that regret is a part of loss and that "no matter how much you did for your loved one, how much you cared for them and loved them, there will always be something else." The book concludes that "the pain of loss is so intense, so heartbreaking BECAUSE in loving we deeply connect with another human being and grief is the REFLECTION of the connection that has been lost. Grief is the healing process that ultimately brings us comfort in our pain. That pain and our love are connected forever. To avoid the pain of loss would be to avoid the love and life we shared." I, therefore, STRONGLY recommend this book to ALL who grieve the loss of a loved one and have a need to be comforted. The Bible itself says "Blessed are those who mourn, for they shall be comforted." This book IS one of the ways that one can feel that comfort.
Excellent resource for basic information.......2007-08-06
This is an easily readable, thoughtful resource covering a great number of topics in short passages. Good examples. Great for professionals - mental health clinicians, funeral directors, clergy, anyone experiencing, or supporting someone for whom the death of a loved one has occurred. Great topics for support groups. Explains relevance of Kubler-Ross's work in today's world.
relief for the grieving soul.......2007-07-16
This is a very gentle and reassuring book for anyone trying to come to terms with the loss of a loved one. I lost my father to cancer last year, and during his illness I read "On Death and Dying" by the same author. That book helped me greatly to understand what I could do for my father at a time when I felt helpless. "On Grief and Grieving" is clear and easy to read, and gives very practical advice in a gentle way to help a grieving soul find solace, by pointing out that each person grieves in a different way and at a different rate, and that no one else can tell you when it is time to get over the loss...Indeed, the authors clearly state (and I agree) that there is no getting over the loss so to speak..only a learning to live with it. In a world where many are uncomfortable with sadness and tears, this book tells us it is okay to feel and express both. Anyone who has lost a loved one, or is trying to support someone who has experienced such a loss should definitely read this book.
Probably the Very Best but Lacking.......2007-06-13
I lost my mom several weeks ago and it was a very sudden death. At this point I'm going through denial, anger, and depression. More than likely depression is hitting me the hardest at the present time. One of the big reasons that I'm rating this book so very high is that it notes that there is never any true closure after a death. Never. Even within acceptance, closure is never there. There are so very many other points that this book covers so very well that space will not allow me to go into them.
However a very large reason reason that I can't give it a five star is that I went through a very severe shock time period recently where I lost several hours of time when I was crying with people on the phone, driving, etc., and I can't remember a thing about any of it. I was basically "out of it" for about 4-5 hours and my therapist told me that I was in shock due to my mom's death and yet one part of my brain was operational and the other part was blocking everything out. I ended up making my sister irritated at me because of the length of time I was on the phone with her asking questions like, "When did mom die", "Who was at the funeral?", "Who spoke?" (I was one of the speakers, etc. I wore her down emotionally) and I had no idea that I was doing it. I also spoke with my wife who told me that I was in hysterics and a good friend. I remember none of what happened and what was said for about a 4-5 hour period. This book mentions nothing at all about the possibility of being in shock. For those who are now in grief, let me warn you that shock is a real possibility within grief and I wish that this book, as wonderful as it is, would have mentioned the possibility of it. My therapist told me that there are people who do go into shock at some point after a loss. It is because of the many wonderful qualities of this book that I give it four stars, however I can't give it five stars because of its' lack of even touching on shock which was an experience that I went through and, from what I understand, can be common.
Continuing wisdom and gentle reminders.......2007-05-19
This was published after I journeyed with my mother along the last lengths of her earthly path, but I was already familiar with Kubler-Ross's earlier work.
Brought to my attention recently, this new classic, by Kubler-Ross and Kessler, is a wonderful extension of her first book. Here the "five stages" are presented as pertaining both to the surviving and the dying, with many stories. Of course, not everyone necessarily experiences all the stages, but this book illustrates how subtle and multi-faceted the stages can be.
It is excellent for reviewing one's own perspectives and emotions after-the-fact, as well as providing simple, thoughtful, supportive information beforehand. Easy and comforting to read, I recommend it to anyone wanting to understand or re-evaluate the concept of loss and grief surrounding death, regardless of their circumstances.
