Book Description
Thanks to her recent adventures in Dying for Chocolate, Goldy Bear, the premier caterer of Aspen Meadow, Colorado, is no stranger to violence--or sudden death. But when she agrees to cater the first College Advisory Dinner for Seniors and Parents at the exclusive Elk Park Preparatory School, the last thing she expects to find at the end of the evening is the battered body of the school valedictorian.
Who could have killed Keith Andrews, and why? Goldy's hungry for some answers--and not just because she found the corpse. Her young son, Arch, a student at Elk Park Prep, has become a target for some not-so-funny pranks, while her eighteen-year-old live-in helper, Julian, has become a prime suspect in the Andrews boy's murder.
As her investigation intensifies, Goldy's anxiety level rises faster than homemade doughnuts. . .as she turns up evidence that suggests that Keith knew more than enough to blow the lid off some very unscholarly secrets. And then, as her search rattles one skeleton too many, Goldy learns a crucial fact: a little knowledge about a killer can be a deadly thing.

Class ranking can be deadly!.......2005-03-03
Keith Andrews is the valedictorian of Elk Park Prep School, where caterer Goldy Bear's son Arch attends. When Keith is found dead, the supposedly tranquil environment of the school is shattered. Goldy suddenly finds herself surrounded with frantic parents whose main goal in life seems to be to get their child into the best college possible. Dirty tricks abound as Goldy's house and vehicle are vandalized and her boarder Justin finds a dead snake hanging in his locker. Goldy's love interest, homicide detective Tom Schulz is concerned for her safety and he urges her to stop investigating the murder. As usual, Goldy ignores his advice and soon finds herself in danger. The characters in this series are being nicely developed in this third entry, and this book offers up the usual tasty read by author Davidson.
Good read-really 3 1/2 STARS.......2004-04-20
I've actually started reading the Goldy Bear Culinary Series in order, which is unusual for me, so this is my third, and so far my favorite. The characters, town and overall setting really come together. Major personality development with Julian and Arch, which is very satisfying and offers some humor. Less mean old ex-husband which is a nice change and the set up for more between Goldy and Tom will keep fans coming back for more in this series.
The only disappointment is the premise for the mystery is a bit far fetched -- who in their right mind would leave their kid in an "exclusive" prep school after 2 murders? Because the author writes this with humor and a bit tongue and cheek, most will get by this litle snag.
Okay, but ..........2004-04-14
I relish my down-time from a high-stress job, I love novels and mysteries and fantasies, I love to escape into the pages of a well-written, intelligent, funny, engaging book, and okay, a bit of romance is just fine too, thank you. Having heard about the Goldy series from a friend as light diversion with yummy recipes, I took this book out of the library (a great source to check out books before I may want to purchase them and make them part of my personal library), and started with number 3 (which I ordinarily disdain) since numbers 1 and 2 were out. I did go into this with an open mind, and although I plowed through, wondering who the murderer was and where Goldy's relationship with Tom was headed, and would the kids be okay, I was generally disappointed in the prose and, finally, the mystery. The latter was a bit of a stretch, and the former just felt rather pedestrian. There were some good lines and evocative moments, and some of the culinary passages were tasty indeed, but perhaps my disaffection comes from having just whipped through the 4 truly erudite, hilarious mysteries by the late Sarah Caudwell, which kept me stimulated and entertained (AND I found that I had to consult my dictionary several times as well!). I am also a huge fan of Elizabeth Peters and the Amelia Peabody series----witty, clever, funny, romantic, and educational (I know a lot more about Egyptology, archeology, and turrn-of-the-century history than I did before reading those books). So, although there's NOTHING wrong with ligher, less challenging offerings, I found the Cereal Murders overall less satisfying (for me) as a mystery and as a novel than the books by Caudwell & Peters. If your tastes run more to the latter, Davidson may not be a writer you want to spend oodles of time with. Not bad, but not great. Me, I'm passing on any more Davidson books and opening up the new Kinky Friedman book...
A Tasty Read.......2004-03-24
When Goldy Bear, owner of Goldilocks Catering, caters a college prep dinner at Elk Park Prep school she gets more than she bargained for when after the dinner she finds the murdered body of the school's valedictorian. Things only get stranger from that moment on as Goldy the caterer tries to solve the mystery and keep up with the threats to her and her family.
The Cereal Murders was a good read. It is suspenseful and full of mystery right up to the end. The characters of Goldy, Arch, Julian, and Tom are very well developed and connected. They seem like people next door. They are very believable and dimensional. The storyline was good and moved along at a fast pace. It was easy to keep reading because the events and happenings flowed easily from one to another.
This was my second Goldy book and I was not disappointed. A good book to read for the mystery lover!
Excellent!!.......2004-01-13
Along with being interesting, this is a very suspensful book. My stepmom actually purchased this book for me at a store because she thought I might find it interesting. I'm glad I started reading this book because I found it to be one of those books I am unable to put down. One of my favorite parts of the book are the recipes, which all look delicious. This book kept me guessing until the very end and is one fo those books that constantly make the reader have to keep searching different angles in order to find the identity of the killer! It was an excellent book and I suggest it for any person that likes murder mysteries. I give this a 5 star!

The Texas Remake Massacre.......2005-07-26
Sorry, the title just came to mind and I felt i had to use it. This book isn't brilliant, it is a bit muddled, with exclamation points and capital sentences where it's not needed, but if you just read it without paying attention to it, it's not that bad a book. Unfortunately, I just feel at the end it could of been better.
Passable adaptation of a passable movie........2005-07-25
Other than the induction of the crazy Sheriff Hoyt (memorably played by R. Lee Emery) into the horror villain pantheon the 30th Anniversary remake of Tobe Hooper's classic The Texas Chainsaw Massacre really did not have much to offer. It was just another slick and empty slasher movie that resembled the dozens of TCM knock-offs that have cluttered the grindhouses, drive-ins and video rental shelves since the original film's release. A group of youths (each of a distinct stereotype) are returning from Mexico, via a trip to Dallas to catch a rock concert, when they almost run over a disoriented girl walking in the middle of the road. The traumatized girl commits suicide in their van and that is only the beginning of the nightmare as they search for help, but only find the persons responsible for putting the delirious-with-fear girl into her final mental state. There are a few minor differences in the story (mainly Henrietta living alone in the trailer rather than with yet another member of the crazy clan) and an odd anti-meat stance, which basically infers that anyone who delights in the eating of meat is no different than any of the Hewitt's. Was the term Vegan even around in 1973, when this story is supposed to take place? I don't recall hearing it until the nineties, at the earliest. Fans of the movie might enjoy reading this, but it really isn't an improvement on the experience of the film - which wasn't all that to begin with.
Pretty Good Adaptation.......2004-08-11
This book is a pretty good adaptation of the screenplay by Scott Koslar. Stephen Hand doesn't copy the movie on the screen, but the movie the way the screenplay was orginally written. Overall I think it is a great book and adaptation of the movie.
The Texas Chainsaw Massacre.......2004-06-18
The Texas Chainsaw Massacre was a really good book. It was based on the new TCM (2003). If you read the book and think it's better than the original movie than just wiat until you see the new movie!
Creepy!!!.......2004-05-30
Is This Like The movie? I Was Wondering If It's Like The Old Or New One? And If It's Like The Old One At The End Does It Have The Girl Go In The Track With Latherface Having A Fit?

OK--but not so great for older onset alzheimers.......2007-04-20
My mother is nearly 90. She's just beginning to develop Alzheimer's. This book would be good for those whose loved ones develop Alzheimer's at an earlier age, but I didn't find it very helpful.
36 Hours.......2007-01-25
Have not finidhed thid publication but have covered approz 125 pages. The info conveyed is excellent and has caused me to modify my approach to my wifs's condition. Unfortunately she has several other probems that complicate the situation. Rgardless this bookis vey helpful so far and I expect the balance to be the same.
Excellent Resource.......2006-12-02
Many books have been written about Alzheimer's disease. However this book gives the reader an easy to understand yet thorough explanation of what a family or caregiver should do when someone (s)he loves or works for has been diagnosed with Alzheimer's disease.
Susan Berg is the author of "Adorable Photographs of Our Baby, Meaningful Mind Stimulating, Activities and More for the Memory Challenged, Their Loved Ones and Involved Professionals".
Alzheimers Early Stages.......2005-09-17
A really informative book that points you in the right direction as far as finances, estate planning etc. I would recommend this book to family members who are caring for someone with this condition.
a godsend.......2005-06-07
I know my family is going to benefit so much from this book. It has what we are looking for -- all types of basic information, about the disease itself and practical caregiving information, presented in a very calming manner. We are in the tricky situation of the affected family member's refusal to go to a doctor, so we don't even have a professional as a guide through this situation....not yet anyway. It is great to have Mr. Kuhn's experience and depth of knowledge, in an easy-to-read and comprehensive guide.

Customer Reviews:
The best Cuban recipes I have tested in a long time!!.......2007-09-12
I have eaten Cuban food for a very long time, growing up in Miami with my best friends that were Cuban and continuing to create my own recipes through trial and error, AND I can definitely say that Ms. LaFray knows her Cuban food!! The recipes in this book are extremely authentic. I definitely do not agree with the reviewer before mine. Trust me, Ms. LaFray could not be more authentic with her recipes in this book. And from following many of her titles and reading about her years of experience with food from several different cultures., I know that you can't get much more authentic than obtaining your knowledge straight from the one and only CUBA!!! I would recommend this book to anyone that loves authentic Cuban food....
Disappointing.......2007-04-21
Ms Lafray is lacking in authenticity, in addition for a reviewer not to have so many mistakes, even in issues a simple as the correct spelling of the restaurant that started the Elena Ruth, she has it misspelled. Proof reading anyone, and the recipes are not authentic.
An excellent cookbook from one of Floridas top food critics.......2005-08-07
As a native Key Wester, most of my knowledge of Cuban cooking has been passed on to me via my family and local friends. When I moved to Tampa, (and on many trips to Miami) I noticed many differences and interpretations of classic Cuban dishes of my youth. Such differences are natural due to the verbal, generation-to-generation passing of Cuban cooking. It is very nice to see a cookbook that records this tradition and its variety.
Joyce LaFray's book is the best example that I have seen of capturing true Cuban cooking. I have made a few of the recipes and can honestly say that they are excellent! Her recipe for "Erasmo's Black Beans" is out of this world - having sampled a hefty portion recently at a food tasting event.
If you are experienced in cooking Cuban food; or a beginner who wants to look like a brilliant Cuban food chef - this book is for you. Go ahead and order it - you will be glad you did!
This is it--best Cuban recipes!!!!!!!!!.......2002-10-12
Cuba Cucina has not only the best traditional recipes, but also incredible neuvo Cuban cuisine--the hottest food in South Beach, Miami. The black beans are the best! The recipe came from none other that from Castro's private chef. My guests were transported by "Hemingway's Daquiri" . It's out of this world delicious! Of all the Cuban cookbooks I've tried this unquestionably has the best recipes and is the most fun reading. My compliments to the chef/author!
All of Cuba in a cookbook........2001-05-22
Don't let the French sounding name fool you. I've met this author a couple of years ago in Philadelphia and she brings together a fusion of flavors that make the old classic Cuban recipes come to life as well as some new `nuevo' items that will make your taste buds dance a mambo.
Cuban Cocina - the tantalizing world of Cuban cooking - yesterday, today and tomorrow is written by Joyce LaFray and is a deceitful cookbook only because it contains about 250 pages filled with close to 500 recipes. The book begins with a section on the ingredients and techniques that will be used some of which are non-traditional. There is also an English to Spanish shopping list dictionary, although hard to read with the green color, it is fun and educational, let alone helpful.
Some of the many recipes include: Cilantro Mayonnaise; Pickled Chicken, Havana Style; Marinated Fish with Cilantro; Fresh Conch and Lobster Seviche; Crispy Yuca Ham Croquettes; Lime Avocado Dip; Hearty Galician Soup; Yucassoise; Fried White Bean Cake; Cuban Rice; Marinated Garbanzos; Saffron Rice Salad; Baked Red Snapper with Garlic and Cumin; Grilled Swordfish with Mango and Blueberries; Plantain-Coated Fresh Fish; Sofrito Chicken; Oxtail with Peppers and Capers; Ginger Sherried Roasted Pork; Baked Calabaza Squash with Apples and Cheeses; Sweet Potato Pudding; Pineapple-Citrus Chutney; Pepper Corn Muffins; Banana Flan with Coconut Rum Sauce; Coconut Bars with Guava Jelly and a variety of beverages.
The cookbook is well designed, not breaking the cardinal sin - No pages need to be turned to finish a recipe. Some of the ingredients are not readily available at all grocery stores, but should be from any Latin grocery store. For anyone that wish to add some terrific ethnic foods to their repertoire, Cuba Cocina is a great addition to the bookshelf.
