Lillian Jackson Braun never seems to run out of ideas for her popular series of mysteries featuring journalist Jim Qwilleran and his feline cohort, Koko. In this latest, The Cat Who Tailed A Thief, Koko again exhibits his preternatural intelligence by trying to tip off Qwilleran to important clues to a murder. That Qwilleran is not possessed of the same mental acuity as his cat is what makes this series work. Braun may not be noted for refined prose, perceptive characterizations, or stunningly original plots, but what she does do well is cats. Fans of felines in general and Koko in particular will find this book, the 19th in the Qwilleran series, almost as irresistible as, well, catnip. Some would even say it's purr-fect.

5 out of 5 stars Haggis Anyone?.......2006-07-17

There's something very odd going on in rural Moose County and that something is thievery. The people of this area just aren't used to this kind of behavior and normally don't bother locking up anything but the times they are a changing. At first it isn't anything big that goes missing and most people including Jim Qwilleran can't understand why anyone would steal a pair of cheap sunglasses or a bag of old clothes. Then things get serious when the local banker who is a newcomer to Pickax City is killed in a mugging. Since the murder occurred while that banker was on a business trip to a big city down below however most people just write it up to how terrible things are in big cities. The ever-alert Koko however smells a rat.

As the plot thickens there is as always lots of other action in progress. Qwilleran and Polly have an argument over her cat's name, which prompts him to write a column in the local paper about the subject, which brings in a deluge of postcards with appropriate names for cats. The area is planning a huge ice festival, which is threatened by the possibility of an early thaw. Qwill and the cats are ensconced in the Indian Village apartments for the winter because their barn is so hard to heat and they end up living next to the radio weatherman whom Qwill does not care for. The weatherman, Wetherby Goode by name has been a background player in this series since the action moved to Moose County but in this installment he plays a major role and he and Qwill become fast friends.

When one of the leading citizens of Pickax dies the action becomes fast and furious and Qwilleran doesn't believe it was natural causes for a minute. Koko has been trying to tell him all along but as usual he just didn't get the point. Koko ends up being so frustrated that he starts walking over to Yum Yum and bopping her on the head like it was her fault that Qwill is a little dense at times.

All in all this entry into this lovable series will keep you guessing while at the same time tickling your funny bone as you read of the antics of the local residents. People of Scottish decent will particularly like this book as the normal Scottish flavor of the stories is kicked up a notch and Qwill finally makes his public debut in a kilt.

In the end of course the guilty are thwarted and justice prevails but this road to justice is one of the most enjoyable journeys that you will ever take.

5 out of 5 stars Fantastic Story to Read When It's Cold Out.......2004-04-29

When new banker, Willard Carmichael, and his young wife Danielle move to Pickax, they are the talk of the town. Literally. Especially with the rash of petty thievery that began the minute the two of them moved in. However, now Willard has been murdered in a suspicious mugging Down Below (in the city), and Qwill begins to investigate, seeing as how Willard's house-restoration project has now conveniently fallen into the hands of Danielle's flashy cousin, whose rich wife suddenly kicks the bucket on their honeymoon. Now, with Koko and Yum Yum's help, Qwill intends to catch the murderer, and the thief, before anyone else loses their life.

I will admit that I bought this book mainly due to the fact that it's takes place around Christmastime (my favorite time of year), and that it featured a deaf cat (I have a deaf cat), even if only for one sentence. However, I received quite a surprise, as I absolutely adored the book, and have now become a Lilian Jackson Braun fan for life. Qwill is an interesting, and exciting character, who's constant work on his articles for the MOOSE COUNTY SOMETHING, keep the reader quite entertained, as well as his work on collecting stories for his newest book. Koko and Yum Yum are also fun characters, who spend their days playing, and being quite vocal. Cat lovers will adore this book, as will all fans of cozy mysteries.

5 out of 5 stars Winter with Qwill and the kitties.......2004-01-01

Come spend the winter holidays (Christmas through Valentine Day) in Moose County! Be there for Hixie Rice's First Annual Ice Festival, celebrate Scottish Night and Lynette's wedding! If you haven't got the faintest idea what I'm talking about you will probably not give this a five star rating but if you have visited Moose County before you'll enjoy this latest trip to 400 miles North of everywhere.

The action begins with on December 23rd as Qwill is Christmas shopping. A series of petty thefts is plaguing Moose County. The crime escalates from minor nuisances to grand thefts and a respected member of a beloved County family is accused. A sudden death of a new Moose County citizen occurs during a trip 'Down Below' interrupts the more immediate concerns of the up-coming local theater production, a newspaper write-in poll of intriguing cat names, and preparations for the Ice Festival. When a popular member of an old Moose County family dies Qwill and Koko increase their efforts to get to the bottom of things. They solve all and bring the culprits to justice before the spring thaw. Of more importance to Moose County devotees is the addition of 'Wetherby Goode' the local radio weather forecaster.

This long running (this is the 19th installment) series of cozies has a loyal core of fans who wouldn't dream of missing a trip to see Qwill, the semi-retired journalist who is also one of the richest men in the 'North central eastern United States' and his friends both human and feline. If you like your murders in series and cozy join the annual trek up north, but if you prefer your crimes to be challenging or graphic travel elsewhere.

5 out of 5 stars Delightful.......2001-07-08

I love it! I am a big fan of The Cat Who series and this is another in a long line of terrific books, great mysteries and cute cat antics. Koko makes me laugh and Lilian Jackson Braun has a great way of writing about him. Such as, "Even before he unlocked his front door, he knew there was a message on the answering machine. Koko was announcing the fact with yowls and body-bumps against the door panels. Given the condo's quality of construction, it was doubtful how much battering the door could take." I love these books... one of the neatest things Koko does is to boot people out of the house!

5 out of 5 stars Koko and Qwill do it again!.......2001-05-30

It's winter in Moose County, 400 miles north of everywhere, and there's a petty pilferer around! But when a charity jar with almost $2,000 is discovered missing, the investigation really gets going. Soon some of the pilfered items show up in the work locker of one of the community's best-loved young men, leading Qwill to suspect a frame-up. But there are plenty of other twists and turns in this book, including a mugging that turns into murder, a suspicious wedding between a young gentleman and a middle-aged widow (with plenty of money), and finally another murder. Of course, Kao K'o Kung knows what is really going on long before Qwill figures it out, but then, if you've read this far in this series, you should be used to that by now.

5 out of 5 stars A Must Have Book For The Macross II and Robotech RPG.......2006-03-08

Once again, Dreampod 9's was brought in to help design the Deck Plans 3 sourcebook for Macross II and it shows. In comparsion to the deck plans featured in the Robotech RPG Books, the Macross II deck plans are like night and day. With a much better layout and more detailed illustrations/cutaways, the Macross II deck plans put the Robotech ones to shame. This book features the deck plans of the SDF-01 (including the layout of the internal city) and ARMD space platforms, both being a particular interest to Robotech RPG fans as this is the only place where these deck plans were ever published. In addition, layouts are given for U.N. Spacy's Earth and Moon bases, as well as Earth's culture park. Finally, a 2 part adventure involving a Maruk Emulator (with NPC stats) is included that originally began in Deck Plans 2. Quite, honestly, I can't find anything wrong with this book. The SDF-01's information is very thorough, (as is the ARMD's) and the background information given is enough for people to get a basic understanding of the battlefortress's history without having to watch/rewatch Robotech/SDF-Macross. Plus, the adventure scenerio is really quite good, and can easily span into a long campaign session. (Also, enough information is given where you don't necessarily need Deck Plans 2 to start the scenerio.) The only reason why you wouldn't want this book would be if you're not a fan of the RPG/series or you find no use for the content listed. If neither listed above fit you're criteria, then by all means get this book.

It's Sunday after dark. Your baby is sick, hurt, or acting strangely, and the doctor won't be in until tomorrow. How can you find out what to do when your healthcare professionals are unreachable? You may only need to go as far as your bookshelf. The revised edition of Caring for Your Baby and Young Child: Birth to Age 5 (the American Academy of Pediatrics' reference book for infancy through preschool), provides a wealth of authoritative child-care information in an easy-to-use format.

The first half of this hefty text serves as a comprehensive parenting manual, and includes a month-by-month guide to the first year, nutritional information, basic care instructions, and physical, emotional, and social developmental milestones for children up to 5 years old. While the American Academy of Pediatrics represents the mainstream child-rearing philosophies embraced by thousands of baby doctors, it does not reflect the entire gamut of child-rearing theory. (There's no discussion, for instance, of breast-feeding past the first year or co-sleeping.) The second half of the book includes a thorough, easy-to-navigate emergency first-aid section, plus detailed information about childhood illnesses, immunization schedules and side effects, and family structures, as well as a discussion of behavioral issues. Caring for Your Baby and Young Child is useful, sensible, and carefully researched, and makes a trustworthy addition to any parent's bookshelf. --Ericka Lutz

It's unfortunate that the American Academy of Pediatrics would use this book to push their political agendas about gun control. On page 394 it says "The American Academy of Pediatrics strongly supports gun control legislation. We believe that handguns, deadly air guns, and assault weapons should be banned. Until handguns are banned, we recommend that handgun ammunition be regulateed, that restrictions be placed on handgun ownership, and the the number of privately owned handguns be reduced."

People who are buying this book are looking for baby advice, not political garbage. It's sad that AAP would stoop so low to include comments such as this.

We received this book as a gift, and I'm sorry that anyone spent money on it.

5 out of 5 stars My "Bible" for the first 5 years and then some!.......2007-09-14

We bought this book when my 9-year-old was an infant and still use it when she gets sick. I also buy this for every friend and colleague who is expecting. It's true what the summary said. In the middle of the night, when my child spiked a fever or was screaming due to a mystery illness (and couldn't talk yet), I'd have this book open in my lap while calling the advice nurse. And the information from both sources would usually sync up. Sometimes it was just another great way to gain a balanced perspective on what was "normal" when I was a new mom.

4 out of 5 stars This book has been a good guide for me .......2007-09-14

Definitely a must for every mother or father who wants to know about his/her daughter/son's growth yearwise. Everything is explained in detail...

A big book and a bit heavy to carry around..but if you are not moving around with this book, then a good buy.

Author of the popular vegetarian classic Moosewood Cookbook, Mollie Katzen now offers Mollie Katzen's Vegetable Heaven, another celebration of nature's bounty. The book (also illustrated by Katzen), presents more than 200 approachable recipes for a wide range of vegetable dishes, from openers, soups, and side dishes to pastas, condiments, and entrees. The recipes draw freely from diverse culinary styles, and cooks of all kinds should enjoy the dishes, as well as Katzen's casual, spontaneous tone. Standout recipes include Roasted Eggplant Salad with Mustard Vinaigrette, Tomato-Fennel Consommé, Giant Mushroom Popovers, and Frittata with Red Onions, Roasted Garlic, Greens, and Goat Cheese. The book's "Side-by-Side" chapter, a collection of small dishes meant to be served together, features bean and grain delights like Coconut Rice with Ginger, Chilies, and Lime, Tuscan Bean and Pasta Stew, and "Don't Knock 'Em Till You Try 'Em" Soyburgers. Condiments and sauces are used to enliven simple vegetable fare and Katzen accordingly offers recipes for such flavor boosters as Red Onion and Shallot Marmalade, Summer Fruit Salsa, and Chipotle Cream. There are dessert recipes, too, for old favorites like Ginger Thins and Homemade Butterscotch Pudding and "newer" enticements like Mexican Chocolate Cake, Pineapple Pomegranita, and Blueberry-Lemon Mousse Pie. With a selection of seasonal menus and useful ingredient notes, the book brims with modern vegetarian cooking ideas presented in Katzen's much-loved style. --Arthur Boehm

5 out of 5 stars A Katzen book for Vegans.......2007-08-02

In this book's introduction, Mollie Katzen explains how she has evolved as a chef to cook and eat lighter, vegetable based meals. As a huge fan of the original moosewood cookbook, I have likewise evolved in my eating and cooking habits and find Vegetable Heaven to be a delightful and essential compliment to her previous books. As always, the majority of recipes I have tried from this book are delicious - my favorite being the lentils with carmelized onions! The book also includes time tables for cooking and preparation time which are very useful in recipe selection. Many of the recipes are easy and quick to prepare, and have few ingredients. Katzen continues to deliver the best vegetarian recipes around. Vegans will find this book more useful than other, more dairy heavy books of Katzen's (although only roughly four dessert recipes are vegan).

4 out of 5 stars Mollie has done it again!.......2006-08-14

This book is a delight, introducing new and exciting ingredients e.g. Quinoa and unusual vege's to my cooking. Mollie has changed her cooking format (I think it comes with age) since the days of "Enchanted Broccoli Forest" and "Moosewood Cook Book", she displays more of a purest cooking form today. It is certainly packed with receipes to test any vegetable's limited, and as always the flavours are exciting and suprising to the pallet. Mollie has made me receive many compliments from friends and family over the years using her receipes and I will continue to do so.

                    2 out of 5 stars Disappointing.......2006-07-25

I love Mollie Katzen's earliest cookbooks - Moosewood and Enchanted Broccoli Forest. Dishes I make from those are relatively easy and very tasty. I have tried a lot of recipes in this cookbook and I have been very disappointed. They just...don't taste as good. I have served some dishes from this cookbook which have remained uneaten on the table. On the other hand, when I use the other two, people usually enjoy the food, and ask me for the recipes. I have learned my lesson, and I don't use it anymore. If you actually want to buy a cookbook which is a useful source of recipes, I do not recommend this one.

2 out of 5 stars Love Mollie and Moosewood, but this one is a miss for everyday cooking.......2006-05-25

Some of my Moosewook books are so well used that they look as if they've been through the food processor so I think I can say with substantial credibility that I am familiar with this writer's previous work. That may, however, be the root of the problem. I should have taken heed of the word "uncommon" in the title. I mistakenly expected the every day home cooking approach of previous volumes. In my casual home these are recipes for special occassions and entertaining.

It's a pretty book and the combinations of ingredients are tantalizing, but when it came down to execution something was lacking. Every dish turned out not quite right; seasoning a little bland, texture a little watery, colors unappealing. I suspect these recipes will yield better results in the hands of a serious cook who has the skill to adapt to the variable characteristics of fresh produce which can vary in flavor, color, and water content based on geography and season and who has the time and skill to watch the cooking process carefully to get just the right textures.

                    5 out of 5 stars Yummy Vegetarian.......2006-04-26

This cookbook is truly a celebration of healthy eating. I am not vegetarian but still enjoy this food. Mollie's other cookbooks were hit-and-miss, in my opinion, but I have loved everything I have made out of this one. My one complaint would be that she severely underestimates prep time.
