Listen as Nero and Archie Goodwin, his able assistant, try to solve three mysterious deaths: the champion bull, Hickory Caesar Grindon; Clyde Osbood, who bet his life that no one would be eating Caesar-burgers; and Bronson, the blackmail artist. Fantastic Entry in Nero Wolfe Series.......2007-05-26
Some Buried Caesar begins with an auto accident as Archie Goodwin is driving Nero Wolfe to an orchid exhibition. Wolfe, in his own considerate way, loses no opportunity to tell everyone he meets that Archie has wrecked his car. While this definitely helps fuel some of the comedy in the book, it's not quite the central plot thread. It turns out that Wolfe and company get sucked into a murder investigation where the prime suspect is a prize bull. Wolfe knows that the bull is innocent but has to prove it to the police to earn his fee. There is plenty of enjoyable snappy patter and the story moves along at a nice brisk pace. Archie also picks up something of a girlfriend, Lily Rowan, who will be around off and on for the rest of the series.
Most Wolfe novels have him safely at home in the city but this one pulls him out of his cozy confines and this definitely helps add spice to the story. Speaking of the story, it's one of Rex Stout's best. The characters are varied and interesting and the murder mystery is just as baffling as you could hope for. Some of the dialogue is laugh-out-loud funny, just as you would expect from Wolfe and Goodwin.
If you've never read a Nero Wolfe book, this one would make a great introduction to the series. If you have read some of the novels, this one is well worth adding to your collection. In short, I would recommend it without reserve to almost anyone.
Nero Wolfe in a pasture, just perfect........2007-02-19
This is a great example of why this series is so enjoyable. Nero Wolfe proven right about automobiles, Wolfe trapped in a pasture by a bull, (Threatened by food, how appropriate.) Archie meets the one woman who sticks around (Lily Rowan) and a mystery that only gets solved with one of Wolfe's outrageous, but plausible (well, almost plausible) schemes. All the usual pleasures are just a bit better in this one, Archie gets arrested (as per usual) but instead of just suffering comically, he decides to organize the inmates. The banter between Goodwin and Rowan is another highlight (You'll see why Stout kept her around) and the twists and turns all have purpose. This one is one of the true classics of the series.
Archie Meets His Match.......2005-10-17
And it's not Hickory Caesar Grindon, the bull, either. This early Wolfe introduces Archie to his lifelong companion Lily Rowan.
Lily sticks with Archie (God knows why) for the rest of the series, which means from 1939 to 1975.
Some would say that Archie should be ashamed that he never makes an honest woman of Lily - I mean, isn't 36 years long enough? But that shows that they've not understood Lily - or Archie, for that matter.
Lily is a classic proto-feminist. She is independent and wilful. SHe thinks and acts for herself. Marriage, as she would define it, poses unacceptable terms to her: having to conform her actions to the expectations of someone else.
A great pleasure was seeing Kari Matchett play Lily in the much-lamented A&E series on Nero Wolfe. She was perfect: beautiful, self assured, charming and very much her own woman.
Oh, the story: a prize bull is killed and so is another person associated therewith...Wolfe, already grossly inconvenienced and in a highly uncomfortable place, must unravel this to assure that Archie does not languish in a provincial prison.
And, of course, a relationship begins which lasts a lifetime. The language and the characters in this story are irresistable, and Michael Prichard does his usual, wonderful job in capturing the spirit of Rex Stout's writing.
It's a story that stands up to multiple listenings. Enjoy!
Some Buried Caesar.......2004-01-24
One of Stout's best Wolfe novels. The mystery itself is not really entirely gratifying, but the story and the characters that inhabit the mystery make it all worthwhile. The conflicts and dialogue of the characters add to the realism of the novel as well. One of Stout's most accomplished novels.
Wolfe Stands the Test of Time.......2002-08-13
I'm not sure I'd tale the time to sit down to read Stout's old classics, but Michael Prichard's audiobook narration captures both Archie Goodwin and his rotund boss in a way that makes a long summer car trip seem a lot shorter. Tom Pratt, who owns a bunch of fast food restaurants circa 1938, buys Hickory Caesar Grindon, a champion sire of prized Guernsey cows, for $45,000. The Osgoods, Fred and his children Clyde and Nancy, old money riding out the Great Depression on thousands of family owned acres around Crowfield, NY, want to stop the sale to Pratt who intends to barbecue Caesar. Pratt's niece Carolyn tells Archie of a vamp named Lily Rowan, who destroyed Clyde Osgood and has her brother Jimmy in mind for her next conquest. Lily, a precocious presumably promiscuous fixture in future stories, is fascinated by Archie, her "Escamillo" whom she is meeting for the first time.
Clyde is found dead in the pasture with Hickory Caesar standing over him. Wolfe's only there because Archie ran his car into a ditch on the way to an orchid exposition, but he decides to stay on to prove the bull didn't kill Clyde. He finds a letter telling of a debt owed to Bronson, a mysterious man of questionable character who came to Crowfield with Clyde. The next day Bronson is found dead in a barn stall with a pitchfork through his chest, a stall Archie was in the day before.
Police Captain Barrow believes Archie is holding out, which he is, arrests him as a material witness to murder and throws him in the county jail. A fun sidebar develops when Archie meets Basil, a con man who's mastered a game with three spoons and a pea. Basil shows Archie how to get things done in the lockup, and within a day Archie is organizing the inmates in the Crowfield County Prisoner's Union.
Wolfe appears in DA Waddell's office in his "customary unhurried waddle" and browbeats him to release Archie with the notion that he needs him to solve the crimes the DA and Capt. Barrow cannot. They do, of course, and the solution seems so obvious once Wolfe ties together all the facts he saw that others missed. Isn't that what Nero Wolfe is all about?

An early crowd pleaser.......2003-07-11
I could call this my favorite Wolfe if my mind weren't set to love whichever I am reading at present best. This is a wonderful Wolfe from the early stages. Archie still smokes, Wolfe is still taking full glory, and it has the first truimphant entrance of the lovely Lily Rowan. The antics in the novel are even more than usually hysterical and this is a must read for any Nero lover. As a college student whose first introduction with the supreme egotist and his delectable assistant was the wonderful (alas now defunct) A & E series I would recommend it to all.
Best Wolfe book - no bull.......2002-05-26
Put Nero Wolfe in the cornfield and watch the comedy and mystery erupt. Wisecracking Archie flirts with the girls while Nero uses his wits to solve two murders and the mystery of a prize winning bull. I loved this book - one of the best and most intriguing mysteries ever! And it also had excellent comedy value. The ending was just, and Nero came up with several impressive conclusions along the way. You must read this classic!

Great plot - poor writing.......2003-03-08
I would love to give the book 4 stars. The characters are likable and the plot is good. However, the writing is very simplistic. I almost felt like I was reading a teen book. But if you feel you can ignore the writing style and concentrate on the storyline, read this book.
Hartstone & Saber.......2001-11-06
A really good first book. Pretty easy to read. Has pretty good smutty parts. it is a little choppy in places, but definately an enjoyable read!!
Entertaining Lesbian Fantasy.......2001-10-24
I found this book very entertaining. The characters were well described and very likable even down to the minor ones. Also, the way the author built up the sexual tension around Cydell and Elayna was breathtaking.
In this novel, both men and women can make their partners pregnant. This is a theme I personally have no problems with. However, I thought that since she went to the trouble of telling us that this was possible, I would have liked a bit more information. Eg. How do the women make each other pregnant? & perhaps even could men also become pregnant? If Jacqui Singleton had elaborated a little more on that topic this book for me would have gone from a very good read to an Excellent one. None-the-less, if you're a lesbian who loves fantasy books with magic spells, dragons and sabers than this book is well worth the read.
Excellent book.......2001-08-17
If you like fantasy novels and you're a lesbian, this is the book for you. The story and the characters are well developed. You wish the book was longer so that you could know them better. And this is a world where women can get other women pregnant. Interesting concept. It was interesting to read a story set in a world where women and men were truly equal and all sexual preferences were accepted. Of course, it has to be fantasy. Unfortunately, there is no sequel to this book yet, but readers can always hope.
Sword & Sorcery for Lesbians.......2001-04-09
Heartstone & Saber is traditional sword & sorcery fare, right down to the language and plot. What's not traditional is that it's obviously written for lesbians to enjoy. I do like finding lesbians in S&S mainstream books like those by Mercedes Lackey, but it's also wonderful to have a book written especially for me. I didn't even know that books like this were being written. It was a wonderful discovery. Heartstone & Saber is exactly what it seems to be, and anyone who enjoys the genre will like it.

Amazing Book.......2007-07-03
This is a must read for all parents and physicians. Dr. Fuhrman explains in plain english how to keep you and your children healthy for now and your lifespan with the simple vehicle of sound nutrition. He dispells most mainstream misinformation that is still provided to the general public with correct information that is unfortunatly not widely talked about in mainstream media/America.
definitely great read.......2007-05-25
this is an incredible book that should be read by all parents. it has forever changed how i feed my children. very eye opening. my only complaints are that soy (which i personally don't believe to be healthy) is heavily used and recommended and he bases the diet on you breastfeeding your child up to atleast 18 months. but still wonderful wonderful book - please read!!
"Children aren't responsible for poor food choices--their parent's are.".......2007-03-18
This book should be required reading for everyone who has a child (or one on the way) or who works with children. Rather than pumping our children up with sugar, toxins, carcinogens and frankenfood and then medicating them for the side effects, why not just feed them what nature intended and watch them thrive. Behavioral issues as well as serious health concerns can be resolved, alleviated, or completely avoided with a few lifestyle adjustments.
Dr. Fuhrman drives home an important point: it's one thing to trash your own health with poor choices, but it's negligent and irresponsible to trash the health of trusting children.
The tone of the book is not scolding however, just direct. In fact when he's done explaining the consequences of poor food choices (diabetes, heart disease, cancer, etc.), he comes accross very upbeat and and encouraging with ideas for coping with the bombardment of toxic food out there. He also has great suggestions for meals and treats.
Forget about what one reviewer said about nut allergies. This book not only has alternatives for eating nuts, but offers suggestions to help Prevent nut allergies. I also don't agree with the person who says it's "difficult". It's very simple and straightforward and really the only thing making it difficult is lack of education, unscrupulous marketing techniques, and the limiting belief that children won't eat healthy food.
This is a book full of hope and an important work. At long last, an MD is addressing children's diets in a real way. Two books that go along quite nicely with this one is THE CHINA STUDY by Campbell and GREEN FOR LIFE by Boutenko. The former illustrates in great detail with hard evidence why a vegan diet is necessary and the later focuses on greens. GFL gave me the idea for green smoothies (example: bannanas and greens such as kale or swiss chard) which are a fantastic way of getting the daily comsumption of greens Dr. Fuhrman recommends. I have never been a fan of Kale, but you honestly cannot even taste it when prepared this way and kids Love it! You will need a high powered blender for this (Fuhrman recommends Vitamix, but I prefer the Blendtec) which is expensive, but worth every penny. In the end, this diet is way cheaper than the standard American diet (SAD).
This book is the real thing, nothing gimmicky at all. Read it and thrive!
A "must have" book........2007-03-09
Every parent not only should own this book but keep it within easy reach as it will become a valuable resource as you navigate your way through the bewildering world of feeding your child.
If only I would have had this book when my children were little I could have spared myself those constant trips to the pediatrician for ear infections, colds, allergies and asthma and saved myself a bundle on antibiotics.
Not to mention the pain and suffering of my children!
So do yourself and your kids a favor read this book and get yourselves on this life changing diet and good health will be one of those worries you will be able to scratch off of your life list.
Find out why the Standard American Diet is really just SAD food for you and your child.
The back of the book has recipies to help you on your way to a happy, healthy, long life.
No child need suffer these common childhood complaints Dr. Furhman tells it like it is...tells it like your doctor probably won't, your childs nutrition is the key to their good health.
A must read for parents.......2007-02-16
We, as parents, have to step up and start educating our children about healthy eating. As a mother of 3 boys I have to say you can do it.
Even my 3 year old loves fruits and veggies. We simply don't have junk food in the house. The boys eat on average 10 fruits and vegetables every day and they really enjoy them. When they occasionally eat junk food at parties they moan about feeling sick. As their bodies are no longer use to junk food.
Some of the recipes in the book seem a little hard and I consider myself a good cook. However, you can make modifications and still eat really healthy.
My kids are rarely ever sick and I truly believe that the healthy diet has something to do with that.

Wonderful and easy!.......2007-02-11
I bought this book based on the other reviews, and because over the years I have enjoyed baking with the holiday season baking magazines put out by Better Homes & Gardens. I have had this book about two weeks and have made the Pecan Bars and the Banana Bars. I took the Pecan Bars to a party and within 2 minutes of putting the cookie platter down I had three people ask for the recipe. I made the banana bars yesterday, and thought that I had died and gone to heaven. They are so rich and wonderful especially with the browned butter frosting. I know that I am going to find all kinds of favorites in this book, and that I will have lots of fun baking new things!
Great and Original Recipes.......2006-09-01
The Snickerdoodle Pinwheels recipe (p. 174) is one of our favorites. It's better than the traditional Snickerdoodles.
There's something for everyone. Nut lovers, nut haters. Chocolate lovers. etc.
Good Cookies.......2005-07-06
I like this book very much, and recommend it highly. It is a rare combination of 2 things that I enjoy every much: rich and fattening cookies, and recipes that work.
This book has 475 cookie recipes that have all been thoroughly tested by the test kitchens at Better Homes and Gardens. As such, every recipe I have ever done from this book has worked the first time through. With this many cookies, you are sure to find a recipe that fills the bill, and you will find rarities such as rosettes, cookie gun recipes, and pizzelle. There were some that I did not like, but that is not because the recipe was faulty, but because I just didn't like the cookie (this is especially true of the some of the bar cookies). This is also a handy book if you have youngsters who want to help you make cookies: the recipes won't fail you, and there are several "smiley face" sort of cookies that will appeal to children, and also many bars that are easy to do, even for children.
Also commendable is the format. The book is plastic spiral bound, which means that the book lies flat on the table when you are trying to do a recipe from it. Each recipe has a full page devoted to it, meaning that the text is nice and large and easy to read, and the recipe is nicely spread out over the printed page and not just jammed into a corner of it.
There are a few problems:
1) the most aggravating of which is side-bar mania, that is the placing of important information about techniques, ingredients, and equipment in random places throughout the book where you will never find them when you need them.
2) The actual introductory material on how to bake cookies in general in the first chapter is rather scanty. If all the above mentioned side-bars where collected and put into the first chapter, it might make for a decent primer on cookie making.
3) at one point, the authors suggest that you boil dried fruits in brandy on the stove. This sounds like a good recipe for a kitchen fire.
4) the chapter on bar cookies, in a side bar, admonishes you to always use the correct size pan. By my count, however, the chapter uses 5 different pan sizes, and you are unlikely to have all of them. Would it have been that much trouble to standardize all the bar recipes to one or two pan sizes?
5) this book had its share of marginal recipes: those that used mixes or store-bought cookie doughs, plus all those that have oats and/or dried fruit in them.
6) The flour measurement is spoon-and-sweep, but this important information is buried in a section titled "What makes cookies too dry?"
It has the following chapters (the chapter titles were too cute by half): Cookie Basics, Sweet Spoonfuls, Heavenly Hand-Shaped Cookies, Mold and Pressed Shapes, Slices of Delight, Rolling Pin Favorites, Fabulous Filled Cookies, Simple Shortcuts, Best Bars and Brownies.

No other book neded.......2004-04-02
This is THE book, you will need no other. I have been buying the grocery checkout seasonal cookie books for years and now I can give them away. All of my tried and true favorites are in one place now. I bake a lot of cookies and I have been pleased with every recipe I have tried. I look forward to new discoveries. I especially like the separate indexes; holiday suggestions are featured separately. The index also features listings by ingredient, so if you are looking for apricot, or pecan, or oatmeal, you can bake a treat based on what you have at hand. I have bought three of these as gifts already--bridal shower season is here. I collect cookie cookbooks and lately this is the one that I reach for most often. It is underpriced for the value. If it is not in here, there is probably not a recipe for it. I highly recommend this as an investment purchase... You deserve it.
