Book Description
North Carolina native Raine Stockton, a dog trainer and the ex-wife of a deputy sheriff, knows the woods of Hanover County as well as anyone. She stopped volunteering for Search and Rescue work after a tragic loss, but now she reluctantly returns to active duty-along with a young and inexperienced Golden Retriever named Cisco-to help find a mother and six-year-old girl who have been kidnapped and taken deep into the wilderness. Suspecting there's more to the case than meets the eye, Raine must struggle to overcome her personal demons, turn her search in new directions-and learn to trust Cisco to lead the way.

Good Dog Mystery-much better than average.......2007-07-27
As the first in a new series, this is very good and very interesting. It is very similar to Virginia Lanier's Bloodhound series. The same type of main character although this takes place in the Smokey Mountains rather than Georgia. This isn't a bad thing since Lanier's books were probably the best in the genre. Like Lanier, the characterization takes second place to the mystery, which I happen to enjoy. Bad mysteries and not enough characterization as in Susan Conant's dog mysteries are too boring.
A great new series!.......2007-06-05
Ms. Ball will grab your attention with the first line of the book, and you won't be able to put it down til you have finished the last page. This is the 1st of a great new series. How can we not love a book with such a wonderful dog featured.
Solid.......2007-05-12
A solid mystery with good characters, good pacing, interesting backstory (more revealed in next book) a likeable protagonist and wonderful overlay of information about search and rescue dogs.
Its a......DOG COZY!!!.......2007-03-20
Travelling outside my regular crime series is always interesting. With this book, Donna Ball's first "Raine Stockton Dog Mystery", I am amazed to find that there is a already a full-blown sub-genre of crime fiction in existence: dog cozies. Donna Ball has apparently written near one hundred other books as well under pseudonyms. It shows. She obviously knows and loves her hounds also and the reader can't help but be drawn in. Her protagonist, Raine, is a dog trainer who is lured back into search and rescue work out of a sense of duty to her community and a missing child. Her reticence is tangible as she battles with doubts about her latest canine companion, Cisco, a golden retriever.
The reader is presented with a carefully thought out set of characters and Ball really does well with establishing her setting, a small community in the Smoky Mountains. She obviously also loves them mountains, because her descriptions have you feeling the mountain air and picturing the colours. The tension she sets up around her feelings for her heroic Cassidy, dead in action and her replacement dog, Cisco - a gift from her sometimes ex-husband Buck - is quite remarkable, I really felt for her. I enjoyed learning about the role dogs and their handlers play in search and rescue and also the different roles they play ie. Raine and her dog do search and rescue, Cisco is NOT a cadaver dog (thankyouverymuch)!
I devoured this book and immediately picked up her next, "Rapid Fire" and will be looking out for "Gun Shy". The three star rating just reflects small imperfections: some of the characterization is a little stock standard (such as Maude, her British 'lady companion') and the writing is a little 'lumpy' ie. it doesn't always flow. However, I believe Ball is really onto a winner for this series, in this genre. Dog lovers are an assured audience, and crime lovers will also wander across it as I did in the never ending quest for 'something to read'. My preference is more hard-boiled (again reflected in my rating), but Ball's work will do very nicely thankyou in the meantime.
fun and a new dog lover's mystery!.......2007-01-04
a sassy new heroine and her search and rescue dog -- good story, great characters, fun read.

A nice companion piece to the world of ElfQuest.......2000-08-15
A richly drawn journey through the World of Two Moons, this collection of stories spanning thousands of years is a fine addition to the ever unfolding ElfQuest saga. "The Blood of Ten Chiefs" gives us an all too brief glimpse into the lives of the wolfriders before the familiar days of Cutter and his family. Like the best of the ElfQuest tales, these stories are well written, beautifully drawn and easily capture emotions without the need for excess dialogue and narration. The change in styles from story to story, artist to artist, can be distracting at first, but after the first few pages the reader is fully involved and captivated by each artist's unique vision of these wonderful elves and their magical world. Wendi Pini's creative absence, so terribly and painfully obvious in many of the other recent entries in the series, in no way diminishes this collection which features some of the finest work of the "guest" artists I have yet seen.
The stories are varied in style and scope, ranging from the visually stunning "Colors" which tells the epic tale of Timmorn and his struggle to reconcile his elfin and wolf heritage, to the whimsical and innocent "At the Oak's Root" which tells of a young Tanner and his misfit "wolf"-friend who is not a wolf at all.
Taken together the stories serve as an engaging glimpse at the legendary Ten Chiefs. Newcomers to ElfQuest should probably save this collection for last, as the stories assume that the reader comes to them with a full and comfortable command of World of Two Moons and its inhabitants.
Good pick.......2000-03-02
I really enjoy Elf Quest comics, but they don't tell you much about what life was like before Cutter's tribe. This book provides you with exelent, well written background information, and detailed drawings of the elves and the incredible world of two moons. It tells you different stories about all the ten cheiftens that came before cutter.
The many chiefs - and glimpses - of the World of Two Moons.......1999-12-12
In the twenty-one years since Wendy and Richard Pini introduced the graphic series "Elfquest", many readers have been curious about the background of Cutter and his Wolfrider tribe. The Pinis took a first step toward answering these questions by endorsing a fantasy-novel series, "The Blood of Ten Chiefs", which appeared throughout the 1980s; this collection of short prose stories brought to light major events in the lives of the chieftains who lived in the 10,000 years before we meet the elves for the first time. From 1993 to 1995, the spirit - and some of the substance - of these tales was brought into a new EQ graphic serial, "Blood of Ten Chiefs"; the first nine issues retold stories from the prose-books, the last eleven were original tales created specially for this new series. Book 9b reprints issues 1 to 7, and 10-11 (a two-part story).
In these episodes published here the storytelling is always of quality, and two of the tales - "Colors" (issue 1) and "The Broken Circle" (issues 10-11) are among the most memorable and significant in the series. "Colors" is the visual version of Richard Pini's tale about the struggle of the half-wolf Timmorn, the first Wolfrider chieftain, to reconcile the elfin and lupine sides of his soul. The difficulty of illustrating states of mind is handled beautifully here; profound as the prose is, the drawing is even more eloquent, particularly in the last few pages. Even the coloring-work, though reprinted only in black-and-white, yet adds to the total effect (a pleasant surprise in almost all the issues here is the graceful transfer of these originally colorized drawings). No issue in BoTC was less than solid, but this debut issue remains the best of the series.
Other stories include another carryover from the novels, "The Phantom of the Berry Patch" - a tale about the young Bearclaw (the father of Cutter); the grim, disturbing "Swift-Spear", an account of Two-Spear's madness and his resulting campaign against the humans; and the last story in this volume, "The Broken Circle", about young Skywise's discovery of a great relic of the High Ones, ancestors of the elves - and the havoc it wreaks with him and his tribe. Drawn in a completely different style from that of "Colors", it too is ambitious, far-reaching and thought-provoking - with a more unsettling conclusion.
The series - and this book - are, by design, a literary and artistic grab-bag, with contributions from several different artists, but the level of inspiration is high all around; about the only flaw is a certain blockiness of pencil-work in two of the stories ("Swift-Spear" admittedly being one of those two). As I have said, the art has transferred very well to this lower-price format (not always the case with other volumes in the EQ Reader's Collection).
To summarize: if the "Blood of Ten Chiefs" book had been a mere history of a tribe of elves, it would have been much less interesting. But because it focuses on the major events in the chiefs' lives - and, through them, illuminates their characters and times - these stories will bear repeated reading. Recommended.
I'm glad I found this!.......1998-03-25
The stories in these books are really great and fill in a lot of gaps in the story. Keep it up! I want more!
A good book for background on ElfQuest, or as an intro........1997-06-30
This book is a history of ElfQuests first 10 chiefs, from Timmorn Yellow-Eyes to Bearclaw. This book was a "breaking in" period for the BOTC series. It focuses on the hardships of chiefhood. It offers insight into the difficult struggle many of the earlier chiefs experienced between the wolf-song and their elven sides. It also goes in depth about the beginning of the bond between Wolf-Riders and their wolf-friends If you're a long time fan of ElfQuest it answers questions you may have about th 10 chiefs. If you aren't than this is one of the best places to start

Entertaining reading.......1999-10-25
I was fascinated by this book and the others in the Blood of Ten Chiefs series, even though I hadn't (and still haven't) read any of the Elfquest comics. The stories, by various fantasy writers, are mostly complex and absorbing.
I was even inspired to go on a lengthy search for an unavailable title in the series (this was several years ago).
A good read.
Uggh, I hated this book!.......1998-11-05
This book is a collection of short stories set in the World of Two Moons. The main characters of the stories are mostly chiefs of an elf tribe. Each chief is a decendant of an earlier chief. This book started out so bad, I almost put it down, but I hate starting a book and not finishing it, so I struggled through to the end. A few of the stories were actually pretty good, but they didn't make up for the ones that weren't.

Wow!.......2000-08-09
Simply astounding! I love all the ElfQuest books, and the "Blood of Ten Chiefs" series is one of my most favorite of the books. These books are not just a history of our beloved ElfQuest characters, they are their own, beautiful, amazing, and mysterious beings. They are just as enchanting as all the origional Wolfriders we came to know and love in "Fire and Flight"!
So if you pick up this book, you'll find it very hard to put it down ;)

Customer Reviews:
my most beloved cookbook (and that's saying something).......2007-10-08
I originally found isa chandra moskowitz about a year ago on her cooking show, the post punk kitchen. I had recently become a vegan and although I was an avid vegetarian cook, I had been eating a lot of frozen meat substitutes and tofu stir fries as a vegan. I needed ideas (ideas that didn't include brie). after watching a few episodes of isa and terry's show, I bought vegan with a vengeance. it definitely made veganism a lot more fun and delicious!
isa's recipes stress fresh ingredients and making things from scratch. it may take a bit of time, but it is always worth it in the end! I think the biggest excitement for me was trying the vegan matzo ball soup. I actually enjoyed it more than my memories of overly salted chicken broth versions I'd eaten growing up. another spectacular recipe is the baking powder biscuits with white bean gravy and tempeh sausage crumbles. I live in san francisco and was feeling depressed about missing out on the pork store's biscuits and vegetarian gravy for breakfast. after making this meal recently, my cravings were completely satiated and then some! my non-vegan boyfriend requests it all the time for weekend brunch.
the bottom line is, all of the recipes I've tried are amazing and filling and in no way the stereotypical vegan fare. it is food for food lovers, whether they eat meat or not. buy this book and love it.
I'm NOT Vegan, but I love this cookbook.......2007-10-08
I'm not vegan, but my husband is vegetarian and my daughter is allergic to dairy and eggs. Cooking for all three of us can be difficult. This cookbook is a life saver, literally. Isa's recipes give me safe options for my toddler that are really delicious to boot. Her lemon blueberry waffles alone are reason to buy the book - every person I've made this for - vegan or not has agreed it's the best waffle recipe ever. Other favorites include the pumpkin oatmeal cookies, Fronch Toast, and the various scone recipes. If you want to bake for people with dairy food allergies, this is the book for you. Next on my list is her Cupcakes Around the World cookbook - perfect for the birthday party coming up.
Super excellent food for the whole family!.......2007-10-03
I originally borrowed this book from our local library and just did not want to turn it in. The book is worth the price just for the scrambled tofu and pumpkin muffin recipes! While not as focused on making recipes low fat or sugar or salt free like other vegan cookbooks (I have tended to tone down the sugar a bit on some of the recipes), its great food and gives us lots of great tasting new ideas for getting healthy vegan food into our diet. My husband, our 4 year old son and I give this 6 thumbs up and are eagerly awaiting her next book. Do give it a try.
I never thought I'd crave tofu........2007-10-03
So, there I was, an ovo-lacto vegetarian. Mainly, I rationalized, because I couldn't figure out how to bake without eggs, or thought that "abandoning" cheese would be just too difficult. If one would believe the current media stereotype, vegans exist on eating twigs and apples. Know what? Twigs be damned. Vegan with a Vengeance, and the oh-so-amazing Vegan Cupcakes Take Over the World, make eating with a conscience easy. Easier than easy. I don't crave cheese at all. I do, however, crave tofu scramble. It is so good that one day, I ate it breakfast, lunch, and dinner. The homemade seitan is so incredibly good, makes a ton, and saves you beaucoup bucks because you don't have to buy it at the store (did I mention that it tastes WAY better than store-bought?) The cheesy flavor that nutritional yeast flakes give off is too amazing to be believed. VwaV has breakfast, lunch, brunch, dinner, dessert... everything you need to make delicious, twig-free meals for everyone. If you're looking at this cookbook because you want a healthy alternative to an animal-based diet, I would urge you to get this. It's not preachy. It's chock full of hints and tips, product resources, and just really, really, delicious food.
My new favorite cookbook.......2007-09-30
I love this cookbook! The recipes are easy, and they have all turned out great. It even inspired me to try baking vegan cookies for the first time, which turned out better than cookies I used to make with eggs and butter. My favorite part about the book is that there isn't a single recipe that calls for meat substitute products or brand name items.

Best Lebanese cookbook you will every own.......2007-07-05
Simply and understandably written for anyone who cooks Lebanese food or not, great cookbook, bought 5 for giveaways to my family
Excellent, Delicious, Nutritious...what more can I say?.......2007-06-17
This book is well laid out with a myriad of Lebanese dishes. The Author being Lebanese-American has adapted the recipes easily to the American Kitchen and Supermarket. Everything I have tried out of this cookbook has been delicious. I grew up eating this kind of food and the smells and flavors take me back. I would highly recommend this book for anyone that wishes to learn and more importantly eat Lebanese food. The copy I have has nutritional information with each recipe. The only reason it didn't get 5 stars is because I would have like more pictures and to have them with the recipes themselves. HIGHLY RECOMMENDED.
A Great Cookbook!.......2007-01-22
I have really enjoyed owning this cookbook. My great-grandparents were from Lebanon so I've grown up eating Lebanese food but this was the first Lebanese cookbook that I've seen where the recipes are just like what I used to eat at Sittee's house on Sunday after church. Also, I want to add that the recipes are relatively easy and require ingredients that you can get at your local grocery store.
I HIGHLY recommend it!
like sita used to make.......2007-01-07
this book is extremely simple to read and understand and very much like the country recipes from rural lebanon that my grandmother (sita) used to make.
Fantastic.......2006-07-03
