Book Description

Winner of the Best First Novel award from the Authors' Club, and debut of the Didius Falco mystery series.
It is A.D. 70, when Roman P.I. Marcus Didius Falco runs into comely Sosia Camillina on the steps of the Forum. It seems she's being chased by a few unsavories for a stockpile of silver pigs--silver ingots--but Falco wants more information. What he gets is a whiff of treason and a one-way ticket to his own funeral pyre....
"It has everything: mystery, pace, wit, fascinating scholarship, and above all, two protagonists for whom, by the end, I feel genuine affection, and want to meet again."
Ellis Peters

5 out of 5 stars The Start of a Wonderful Series.......2006-09-18

This is the first novel in the mystery series featuring Marcus Didius Falco, an informer and sleuth. A series of books that have become hugely popular, so much so that the author is now at the forefront of historical mystery writers. It was probably a stroke of genius on the part of the author to have novels that are extremely well researched and contain all the elements that would be and should be found in Rome in AD70, but to have a lead character who has the vocabulary of a present day New York cop.

Falco has done his time in the legions in that god forsaken place called Britain and it is the last place on earth that he would return to through choice but he has been told by the powers that be that he will go back to Britain and no, there is no choice.

When he arrives the weather is even worse than he remembered and the natives are still as unfriendly as ever. He just wants to complete his mission, find the missing silver and get the hell out of it, that is until he meets the lovely Helena Justina and if he thought he was having a hard time before he met her, he was in for an almighty shock.

5 out of 5 stars What a fun book - I feel like I lived in ancient Roman times!.......2006-08-01

This isn't an easy book to find - I think its out of print - but its great. Lindsey Davis does a great job of bringing ancient Rome back to life. The characters are believeable and the situations seem real/plausible. If you enjoy traveling through time, albeit virtually, find and read this book.

5 out of 5 stars Awesome read full of intrigue and history.......2006-02-18

I first had to read this book for my Latin language class in college. Well, I was looking for something to read recently and remembered this book. I always love a good mystery. This book definitely fits the bill. In addition to just plain good writing (hers not mine!), the book is intelligent and historical. I had forgotten all of the history crammed into the book. It is rare that a writer can turn out a thoroughly enjoyable read combined fiction, history, and intelligence. Bravo! I am now searching for her other books to enjoy!

3 out of 5 stars Needs suspension of disbelief.......2006-02-01

I will proceed by means of an (obviously enough) comparision with Saylor's Roma Subrosa series: Saylor's Gordianus, anachronistic as he was, at least knew his place, while in order to enjoy Davies' Falco, you have to begin by believing that a Roman humilior - who had even to qualify for the corn dole sometimes - of the Early Roman Empire could adress a senator and his daughter on an equal footing. If you can achieve that (as I did, with an effort) the novel becomes enjoyable.

5 out of 5 stars Makes the Roman Empire come alive!.......2005-12-18

This first book of a series about a working class Roman detective, who makes himself out to be a scoundrel while behaving with honor, is a detective story, a romance, but most of all great history about ancient Rome and Roman Briton, with lots of great characters from slaves to the emperor. It should be in print, along with the rest of the series.

3 out of 5 stars Eh..........2005-02-04

This series was okay. I didn't like how it seemed everyone had dealings with the supernatural, and that there was more than one or two vampires in Aurora. I prefered the more realistic account of the seige of New York, where the punches were thrown by characters you knew, not some ancient evil.

I'd first recomend The Brujha Clan Novel if you want fiction on Theo Bell.

5 out of 5 stars Great thriller.......2004-08-09

I loved this book. It was fast, held together well, and really drew me into the action. The characters were fun too. I found it almost impossible to put down.

2 out of 5 stars Better Fan-Fiction.......2004-07-11

I really wanted to like this book. But it bored me.
It seems like World Of Darkness fan-fiction. Not rotten
fanfic, but still. Its not very gripping, the characters
are thin cardboard (Delfine, the young naive-yet-spunky-yet-
terrified-yet-takecharge vampire is worst, absolutely
unbelievable as a being) and the author doesn't resist the
lure of the 'World Of Darkness as a theme park' - where
anything goes, because there is a new conspiracy or
supernatural power to explain everything. Sheesh.

5 out of 5 stars Great if you like the game.......2003-05-30

If you like "Vampire: The Masquerade" then you may like this first in a series about the Brujah clan. We meet Theo, a Brujah archon who was once a slave in the antibellum south, whose method of operations appears to be very traditional until his mortal life memories get triggered by his latest assignment. Some Kindred and some mortals are working together to run a slave ring of mortals for high profit to markets around the world. This ring seems to cut across all lines that exist in the world of Kindred politics or perhaps its just a cover for something more serious. Burdened with a neonate Brujah who is a survivor of this modern slave ring, Theo must balance his duty, his clan, the politics of the Midwest, and his own memories as he searches for other survivors and the leaders of the slavers. The writing is excellent, showing depth to Kindred characters that is often lacking in many RPG groups and in the books themselves on occassion. There is plenty of violence for those just interested in the mechanics of combat but primarily this is a story of lies and coverups discovered by someone with a century and a half chip on his shoulder.

5 out of 5 stars Fantastic!.......2003-05-05

...This book rocks though. If it wasn't for the logos on the cover, you'd never know it was linked to a game at all. It's a kick-[butt] horror with really great characters -- I could easily fall in love with Delphine -- and some of the best portrayals I've ever found of what vampire existence is like. He really gets in there and takes you into it all. Pick it up as soon as you can. You won't regret buying it.

                  Book Description

From one of Denmark's foremost writers, here is his most impressive book to date-a roguishly fantastic adventure story of piracy, slave owners, witch burning, shipwrecks, desert islands, and larger-than-life characters-the largest of which is fourteen-year-old Tom O'Connor, a poor, adventurous, charming liar who lives with his mother and half sister at a tavern on the island of Nevis in 1639. Good and evil, truth and lies, right and wrong tug at this unlikely hero when he rescues a slave from drowning, learns he is prince, loses him, travels the Southern Hemisphere in search of him, and finally brings him home to Cape Verde, hoping for a grand reward. But by the time Tom discovers that the prince is really a fisherman's son, the loss of reward doesn't matter-his adventures have brought him no use for greed, and as he says, "a reckless regard for other people's life and well-being."

Translated from Danish by Tiina Nunnally.

2 out of 5 stars An unenjoyable read -- Not worth the time or effort.......2006-04-16

I honestly thought this book was going to be something of an adventure, but as always it took far too long to get itself to the major point and purpose of the story and main character itself. In the beginning the story highlights the hardships of Tom O'Connor's life working in a inn owned by a pompous Spanish-man, Senor Lopez, who treats his mother and his sister (whom he hates just as much as Lopez, and her in return) like animals to be treated horribly and paid lightly. Tom in turn hates the man and his equally despised by everyone in the Island of Nevis for the Irish Blood that runs through his veins.

He apparently is so used to insults thrown his way because of this that he hardly seems bothered by it anymore. He is also full of contempt because of his lifestyle and his Irish blood, that its hard to like him. In his spare time he rows out to sea and searches for valuable items under water and just when he's having a off day at sea he comes across two "shipwrecked" people, a Spaniard and a slave boy no older than him. He stashes the slave away and tends to the Spaniard around the time a Bishop comes to the inn searching for a seer named Zamora, who scares him into telling him where the seer has gone.

From there the book just becomes one crude tale of obvious hatred and self-hatred for one's self and his situations. I honestly tried to enjoy the book, but in the end it was far too dull and angry for me to complete. Not because of the way the author depicts the time line (1639), nor most of the semi-gritty cruelty and reality of slavery when Tom comes across a Plantation. But because of the anger the character carries and the crude characters he meets along his adventures.

It just was not a pleasing romp to even "skim" through at the least. All in all I hardly enjoyed this book and I cannot recommend it to anyone. If your looking for a book concerning slavery, pirates, aventure, or any of the above, look elsewhere. -- [a 2 out of 5]

3 out of 5 stars A rollicking adventure story for boys.......2004-12-12

This is the story of Tom O'Conner, a 14 year old boy that lives with his mother and half-sister in an inn, run by a not-so-pleasant fellow. Tom is forever seeking his fortune, by venturing out in search of sunken treasure so that he can help his family. However, he finds his fortune not in the shape of gold or jewels, but in the form of a Spanish sailor and an African slave. Or so he thinks. For the slave is actually an African prince, and rich rewards await those who bring him home.

However, things do not exactly go smoothly and in order to obtain this fortune, Tom undertakes many adventures - including fighting sharks, slavery, witch burnings, pirates, shipwreck and many other things besides! Along the way he meets a wide range of characters, ranging from the rather dubiously nicknamed Ramon the pious, to the nastiest pirate of all, CW Bull, charming many of them with his tall tales and polite manner (the rest, for various good reasons, want him dead). The result is not so much an adventure to trade a freed slave for a fortune, but more a story of friendship, courage and above all, how thin the boundaries are between right and wrong.

This is definitely a book aimed at boys, probably teenagers, with a good dose of macabre imagery (the fate of Innocent's scribe being particularly noteworthy) and non-stop action. The writing style seems a little stilted, which quite probably comes from it being translated from Danish, with some conversations making a bizarre diversion partway through, and this is what has lead to my somewhat lower-then-it-deserves rating.

There is one thing that I absolutely agree with Ann Luise - the amount of chemicals that we are exposed to in our daily lives is overwhelming. I think that cleansing our bodies from them ("unchemicalizing ourselves") from time to time is a very good idea.

There are several other authors that pointed to this problem in the past. There are also a few who suggested better or worse cleansing solutions. One author dealing extensively with this topic in her few books is Hulda Clark. Gittleman's Detox Diet is only a good addition to the anthology. I do, however, have a problem with the "eight pounds weight loss in a day" idea. Isn't this just a little over-promising?

My favorite author dealing with this topic is Mikhail Tombak who offers total body cleansing solutions (starting with the liver, via kidney, intestines, bones and joints, and ending with blood) in one of the chapters of his book "Can We Live 150 Year?" At the same time Mr. Tombak does not promise losing weight overnight...

5 out of 5 stars More about detox , than weight loss.......2007-07-13

I'm a big of Ann Gittleman. I have all her Fat Flush books. I think that the information they provide is invaluable. I learned a lot from reading her books. I've had success with this book and the Fat Flush Plan. To be honest, I did not lose the weight that I expected to lose from this detox diet. As one reviewer points out, it takes a lot of other factors to help you lose weight. However, the detoxification that I got was worth more than the extra pounds of weight loss. My actual weight loss came from Fat Flush. But, Fast Track helped to make my liver and colon much healthier. On this detox diet, sometimes it was hard for me to find a food within each of her categories that I liked, but I did my best. I liked the Miracle Juice, and it was easy to prepare. I really didn't think it was that bad. The detox day didn't affect me in any adverse way. I ate the next day, but I wasn't ravenous. To anyone who is thinking about purchasing this book, just know in advance that this book will help you in many ways, but it is a very tough 11 days. Just make sure that you're up to it before you begin. Also know that because it says that you COULD lose up to 8 pounds doesn't mean that you will. All I can tell you is that I enjoyed this book, and I will use it again to detox. Five stars for detoxification!

2 out of 5 stars Not really "One-day" as it claims.......2007-04-25

Having lived in Germany I was already familiar with the idea of quick fasts and fasting groups to cleanse the body and periodically offset weight gain. I haven't tried this one because it seemed pretty complicated and requiring lots of effort, planning and the purchase of special stuff like supplements. I was also pretty put off when I read that there was a highly structured 7-day "prequel" to the detox. One-day huh?

3 out of 5 stars Suprise eating health makes you feel better..........2007-03-29

Long term weight\fitness changes require long term effort.

That being said nothing like a jumpstart, new book, fad diet to get you going.

Outlines a great program that works for detoxifying your body and for weight loss that still leaves you full of energy

Everyone wants their children to have the best possible diet, particularly in those all-important first years of life. But parents (especially new parents) aren't nutritional experts. So how do they know if their babies and toddlers are getting all the nourishment they need?

Now, with Better Baby Food, there's a complete, authoritative guide that takes the guesswork out feeding young children -- from birth to 24 months and beyond.

Developed with the world-renowned Hospital for Sick Children, this book provides the most up-to-date, expert advice available, with easy-to-read information about every aspect of feeding young children -- from breast and bottle feeding through to the introduction of solid foods. Each page is packed with tips, recommendations and common-sense guidelines for parents, including important topics such as food safety and allergies, teething and tooth care, digestive problems, essential vitamins and minerals, snacking, homemade vs. commercially prepared foods, feeding while traveling, as well as vegetarian diets.

But that's not all. In addition to its wealth of nutritional information, this book features over 220 easy-to-prepare recipes, organized by meal and recommended age range. Each recipe provides a full nutrient analysis, and has been baby- and toddler-tested to ensure maximum flavor appeal. Start the day with Baby's Fruit Smoothie or Apple Breakfast Bars. At midday try dishes such as Lunchtime Pasta and Bean Casserole or Crustless Cheese 'n Carrot Quiche and, for dinner, Fiesta Tomato Surprise or Chicken and Peach Salad. These recipes are so imaginative and delicious, you'll want to make them for your own dinner table!

Every year, 4 million babies are born in North America, creating a huge market of new parents, all of whom are looking for anything that will make their sleep-deprived lives easier. 5 out of 5 stars INDISPENSIBLE!.......2005-06-05

Having a mother who is an RN, and yet not wanting to be a health-crazed maniac, I struggled with the idea of Gerber/prepacked baby foods versus doing it myself in our own kitchen. My mother recommended "Better Baby Food", as it was used by her hospital's cookstaff for pediatric menus. What an indispensible guide it proved to be and the continuation book "Better Food for Kids" is every bit as wonderful! The recipes produce foods that are easy (if you are tired or juggling multiple children or a full time career) and really great in regard to: variety of taste, color and texture and our whole family enjoys many of the meals in the later sections and the earlier stage recipes make for great side items to meals! Great tips on feeding picky eaters and special dietary concerns for both the healthy and the ill/child with mallady. If you are like me and considering making your own baby food there are great tips like usuing a handblender/food processer/hand chopper to puree or small chunk soft or cooked foods (making sure to add the water left from cooking process to add back in extra nutrients)--then spoon into ice cube trays and freeze--later plop these into little sandwich baggies or tupperware in freezer for quickie meals--we would take an ice blob of peas and another of golden delicious apples and ask for a mug of hot water at a restaurant to thaw it out and warm it, our daughter loved it...and it really was easy...and really did save MONEY! There actually is just 1 chapter devoted to each stage of age and eating, but index in back refers reader to many referenced items that cross apply throughout each stage (i.e. allergies). As for the other review's notation about questioning recipies with butter, sugar, etc...a little, in moderation is what all doctor's or anyone of authority in the medical or nutrional world recommend, unless allergic or there's a known health consideration. My advice, if you are truly concerned about things like sugar, substitute apple juice or apple sauce, which if that is a health/diet concern you would probably already known anyway! Great book---I pair this with the "Better Food for Kids" as a continuation and another little item for all baby showers I attend and so far no complaints, lots of thanks later on actually!!!

2 out of 5 stars I'm doing better without this book!.......2005-01-16

I got this book from the library to get fresh ideas on what to feed my 8 month old son. I'm very happy that I didn't buy it. While the title suggests that there are recipes for babies, the majority is really for toddlers. With a few exceptions, the only suggestions for children under 12 months are plain veggie, fruit and meat purees, and even those are mainstream (i.e. the purees you can buy in jars). I found much more interesting combinations in a German cookbook (parsnip with potato and pork, polenta with broccoli, and how does fennel with banana sound?). One of the "exceptions" is a barley vegetable soup that contains dried legumes. In other books, I read that legumes are not suitable at that age because they can make the baby gassy, and I don't want to risk that.

While reading the first part, I liked the fact that the authors say that using canned goods from time to time is ok, but I was not so pleased to see they used LOTS of canned foods (including canned soup that is usually very high sodium). "Baby's first birthday cake" has a whopping 540 calories per slice including the icing, and contains 4 cups of sugar for 12 slices.

Some of the recipes do sound interesting, but the overall quality is rather questionable.

                    5 out of 5 stars Quick, Easy & Nutritious.......2004-02-25

This is an excellent book for easy starter meals for baby's just getting their teeth and toddlers. The recipes are quick to make and simple and most contain ingrediants already found in your kitchen. They provide a nice variation in a child's diet and some adults may enjoy the recipes as well.

5 out of 5 stars I wish this book was available when I was raising my kids!.......2004-01-19

When I was raising babies I was completely unprepared for what to feed them, how much to feed them, and when to introduce new healthy foods. A few years ago I purchased this book when searching for a baby gift for a friend. Now I buy both the Better Baby Food and Better Food for Kids for all my friends and relatives having babies. Everyone loves this gift!! I even purchased a copy for myself and still find the recipes great for teenagers and just the presentation makes the recipes look so simple. I also like checking the nutritional value and feel better knowing what goes into each recipe. These books are incredible and I will continue to purchase them.

1 out of 5 stars I wouldn't feed this stuff to my child!.......2003-12-03

I am extremely disappointed with this book. I agree with the previous reviewers who noted that the recipes are not healthy at all. They are full of white flour, sugar, butter, oil, etc. I also noticed a lot of the recipes for 12-18 month old babies include garlic and onions. What baby likes garlic and onions? I also have the Super Baby Food book and highly recommend it for TRULY healthy recipes for your baby.
