For those of you who have not read the Crimes of Fashion mysteries, here's your chance to see why they are a recommended read. Lacey is every girls heroine. She is smart, funny, sassy, classy and obsessed with vintage fashion. Everything us girls love to read about. Ellen Byerrum has created a fun circle of friends and entertaining mysteries that we would all love to be able to solve. I recommend these books to all my gal pals who need some summer reading. Enjoy!

5 out of 5 stars Smithsonian Strikes (A Home Run) Again!.......2007-02-14

I always enjoy this heroine and her funny, fast-paced adventures, and the fourth book in this series is no exception. (It's understandable that the author has a playwriting background; her original characters, witty dialogue, and clever plot suprises make the readers feel as if they were watching a theatrical event unfold just for their benefit.) Lovers of history will appreciate the Romanoff connection, lovers of travel will savor the Parisian and pre-Katrina New Orleans details, and lovers of mysteries will turn the pages so quickly they break speed-reading records. Ellen Byerrum has once again charmed me into waiting impatiently for Lacey's next adventure!

4 out of 5 stars Fashion and Mystery .......2007-01-25

This series has been very enjoyable. I like the main character although sometimes Lacey acts too arrogant and silly for a mature career woman. Independence is nice, but when you need help, it's best to admit it and get over the "I have to do this all by myself syndrome." The supporting characters, especially Stella and Brooke are a nice mix. Sometimes the mystery takes a back seat to fashion, and the author has a problem with her narrative voice now and then, but these are minor quibbles. I love the trunk idea, and Lacy going into it when she's down and depressed is a fun way to get the history of her lovely clothes and find out more about her family. I'm not too fond of her boyfriend, Vic, he doesn't ring true to me, so let's dump the guy and start over with someone more "real". All in all this has been an enjoyable and pleasant series and I hope the author will continue to develop the character of Lacey.

I Really Loved this book. This book was interesting, funny and had a great plot. I read a lot of books in this genre and this was one of my favorites. I loved the characters and the clothes. Not only did I enjoy the book itself I also enjoyed the newspaper articles written by Laci within the book. Sort of like a two for one deal.

David Herter's debut novel, the SF adventure Ceres Storm, appeared amid a flurry of well-deserved praise. With his second novel, Herter turns to contemporary fantasy in the mode of Gene Wolfe and Charles de Lint.

A composer struggling to create in the wake of tragedy, Russell Kent returns to Evening, the Oregon coast town where his wife fell to her death in the shadow of the founder's mysterious mansion. In Evening, Kent finds new creative energy, the possibility of new romance, and a bizarre secret for which he uncovers impossible, undeniable evidence: Evening is built over the entrance of an ancient, subterranean city--one that may still be inhabited.

Though a sensitive, thoughtful, adult novel, Evening's Empire has something in common with a very different work, Disney's kids-oriented animated movie Atlantis: both are an homage to Jules Verne's Twenty Thousand Leagues Under the Sea and to the whole Victorian-era school of lost- world adventures, a vast genre nowadays nearly forgotten except for Verne and Edgar Rice Burroughs. It is regrettable that Herter did not incorporate some of the lost-world adventure's adolescent energy in Evening's Empire. The novel's pace is gentle, the tone muted, and a meandering climax diffuses the tension. --Cynthia Ward

Book Description

A mysterious contemporary fantasy set on the Oregon coast, and in a world below itDavid Herters first novel, Ceres Storm, was recently published to widespread acclaim. Now Herter moves from SF to contemporary fantasy and to a more literary mode of storytelling, in homage to Gene Wolfes Peace. Evenings Empire is set on the Oregon coast, in Evening, a small town famous for its cheeses. Russell Kent, an outsider, finds love and discovers many strange things (even beyond the cheese sculptures), including a secret underground world in a cavern beneath the town. In some ways like the Newford stories of Charles de Lint, this is an ambitious fantasy by an important new talent from the Pacific Northwest.

1 out of 5 stars Slow, unengaging, unsatisfying.......2007-08-25

I bought this book based on the wonderful reviews of Herter's first novel, Ceres Storm. That novel is described on the dust jacket of Evening's Empire as "a stripped-down thrill ride some 10,000 years in the future." It's hard to believe this book could have been written by the author of a stripped-down thrill ride. The plot meanders slowly. The main characters don't reveal much of themselves. (Russell has lost his wife and does not know when to seek medical attention. He struck me as kinda dumb in that regard. Megan has also suffered a loss and does not know when to get out of town. She struck me as kinda dumb in that regard.) There is much uncertainty about what may really be happening, but not a lot of actual tension. The plot feels contrived. The "bad guys" seem a lot more like a PTA gone wrong than a dangerous cult.

Finally, as a fan of Charles de Lint and a reader of Gene Wolfe, I think it is unfair to compare Evening's Empire to the generally high level of their work. Herter has not gotten there yet. Not recommended as a fantasy novel or as straight fiction.

5 out of 5 stars Not a best-seller.......2006-08-01

If you want to write a best-selling fantasy novel, you should probably not

a) make the protagonist a modern classical composer struggling to write an opera based on 20,000 Leagues under the Sea.

b) make the villains the owners and operators of a cheese factory.

c) wait for over a hundred pages before introducing the first hint of supernatural phenomena.

d) leave the fate of many of the secondary characters unresolved.

This novel is encumbered by all of these obstacles. It starts very slowly, and concentrates on character more than your typical fantasy novel. Personally, I enjoyed it immensely. As for the ending, the ending of 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea leaves the fate of several characters hanging, just like the ending to Evening's Empire. There is an important difference, in that in 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea there is no possible way for our heroes to find out what happened next, whereas in Evening's Empire the presumption is that the characters will discover what happened in a few months. Somehow, this makes the ending much more unsatisfying. Unfortunately, Herter seemed to miss this distinction.

5 out of 5 stars Color of sound.......2003-12-09

If you have read the other reviews you already know that "Evening's Empire" has a disappointing end. There is a masterful slow, chilling buildup of tension, which in the last chapters is inexplicably diffused without a real closure or resolution.

If it was any other book, it would have mattered more.

This book is unique in that it evokes not only pictures, but sounds. The hero, Russel Kent, is a composer, a synesthete who perceives all sound as color. He is comissioned to write an opera based on Jules Verne's "2000 leagues under the sea"; he composes sketches of music haunted by dreams of death and memory. Kent's opera is born in front of our eyes out of the dark secrets of the sea and the fear that lives in small towns on the coast; it is born out of storms and tremors of the earth. It speaks of drowning, and of people who walk under the water, of strange cities abandoned yet active under the pressure of water and ground. It is the music dreams are made of, and nightmares. I know very little about musical theory; yet this book was for me a unique experience of music in greens, blues and greys.

I found most of the fantasy elements in this book redundant, added as if an afterthought to the plot. The written musical pieces never come together as a complete oeuvre, and neither does the book. The opera project is put on hold. Only some of the score is written.

In real life, I guess, we rarely hear about such abandoned projects, even if they are works of genius. Herter lets us listen to Kent's unfinished masterpiece. It may sound strange, but I hope that in Herter's imaginary world, the project is someday completed. I wish I could see this opera performed; I guess I'll console myself with Reimann's Lear.

4 out of 5 stars strong fantasy suspense thriller.......2003-04-17

Needing closure by burying the specter of his wife who accidentally fell off the cliffs near Empire, Oregon, Russell Kent returns to the village with plans to compose an opera focusing on Jules Verne's Captain Nemo. However, ghosts haunt his sleep as he dreams of his deceased spouse as well as the town and its residents.

Feeling a bit guilty, Russell has an affair with Megan Sumner, the owner of the bed and breakfast he is staying at. He also begins to meet many of the residents, but feels uneasy as he senses everyone shares a dark secret except him. Russell finds a thirst to learn the undisclosed as he starts questioning anything and everything for everyday occurrences here in Empire seem slightly off center or eccentric.

This is a strong fantasy suspense thriller that builds the tension to extremely high levels as readers accompany the hero with a need to know the truth. The story line is loaded with action and filled with an assortment of characters that manage to make the everyday appear eerie. However, the climax feels abrupt as a series of inexplicable disclosures with few or no real clues occur in a very short stretch as if a page limit barrier was hit. Still, David Herter displays his talent to keep the thrill at its acme and the need to know even higher in this powerful fantasy suspense tale.

5 out of 5 stars Fantastic........2002-08-13

Russell Kent had been commissioned to write an opera based on Twenty Thousand Leagues Under The Sea. He traveled to the Oregon coast, a town called Evening. A year before, Russ had lost his wife, Anna, in Evening. She had fallen to her death from a cliff, a freak accident. In Evening Russ planned to face his past ghosts and create the opera. What he found was a chance at love anew by the owner of the local B&B, Megan Sumner.

The town of Evening had a secret. Something everyone kept quiet about and secretly worked on, unknown by the rest of the world. Quietly, the population of Evening hid a fantastic secret in a cavern beneath the town and only referred to as "downstairs". After many decades of work, and several deaths, the secret was about to be revealed!

This story seemed to flow as smoothly as mellow music. A small bit of curiosities to begin with, followed by a constant undercurrent of tension. The story kept me guessing as to what the big secret was. Even as my imagination ran wild, I never came close to the truth. David Herter has masterfully created a novel that will keep its readers on the edge of their seats! Recommended!

In Natural Hormone Balance for Women, Beverly Hills obstetrician-gynecologist Uzzi Reiss makes it clear that he believes in hormone replacement therapy for women, but not the "chemicalized hormonal substitutes" usually prescribed. "I emphasize natural hormones that are precise replicas of your own hormones," he writes, which can increase energy and memory, decrease symptoms of menopause and PMS, improve skin and mood, and enhance sleep, sexuality, and well-being. But neither the widely used hormonal medications, such as estrogens derived from horse urine, nor the "natural" hormonal products derived from soy or yams replicate the hormones produced by a woman's body. Rather, he recommends a natural estrogen formula balanced with natural progesterone, both available through compounding pharmacies (with a doctor's prescription).

Dr. Reiss and talented cowriter Martin Zucker explain why, how, and when to use natural hormones. This is not a snappy, one-size-fits-all program--rather, you, with the involvement of your physician, learn how to analyze your needs and individualize your treatment for your own optimal hormonal balance. Reiss describes the benefits and uses of natural estrogen and progesterone, then discusses other natural hormones that might be helpful: testosterone, human growth hormone, DHEA, melatonin, and pregnenolone. This is a provocative book that's worth sharing with your doctor. --Joan Price

I felt like I had neglected so many things that it was hopeless and I couldnt do anything to change how i felt. I was so exhausted ALL THE TIME yet couldnt sleep at bed time, I was dizzy, cranky, anxious among other things - just sick of feeling like crap. This book is great and breaks everything down so easily so anyone could follow this program. I am very thankful for this book but it saddens me to think that my OB really should have been telling me this a long time ago!

5 out of 5 stars Same as the Oxford Companion.......2006-06-10

I spent a lot of time deciding on which of the two companions to food to purchase. Given that the Penguin Companion was half the cost and by the same author, it won out. I was surprised though, when I held the book in my hands to read at the bottom of the front cover "Originally published as the Oxford Companion to Food." Although I am glad I am getting the quality and authoritativeness the Oxford series provides, it sure would have made my decision a lot easier to have known this bit of information.

The Oxford/Penguin companion is a terrific encyclopedia of foods. Davidson's essays are very readable and enlightening. Like all of the Oxford companions, it is a 5 star read.

This is a fascinating book. I find myself flipping from article to article and I have trouble putting it down. It is truly comprehensive, and well organized. It makes for fun reading, but is also a great reference if you come across some sort of obscure food item in a recipe or elsewhere.

5 out of 5 stars Great Reading. Some gaps. No recipes!.......2005-11-01

`The Penguin Companion to Food', edited by the noted English culinary writer and diplomat, Alan Davidson is a foody reader's compendium to lots of interesting articles about sources, history, some people, and most places regarding food and drink. It is quite properly named a `companion' rather than an `encyclopedia', since, unlike the seemingly similar `Larousse Gastronomique', it contains no recipes whatsoever. This is not an accident or oversight, as Davidson clearly states in the introduction that this was an editorial policy from the outset.

This book has a distinctly British flavor about it with its selection of article topics. While there is an excellent longish article on Elizabeth David, easily the most important British food writer of the 20th century, there are no articles on either Julia Child or James Beard, the two most popular and well known American food writers. Alternately, there is an excellent article on M. F. K. David who is much less well known even among Americans. Child and Beard are mentioned but once at the end of an article on American cookbook writing. This choice is an excellent symptom of what this book is all about. It is not about cooking so much as the writing about food culture. While Child and Beard were cookbook writers par excellence, David and Fisher dealt less with food than they did with appetites, impressions, scholarship, and recollections. It is noteworthy that David should be one of the very few writers honored with an article here, as Davidson was very much a student and protege of Elizabeth David.

The book is oddly selective in other ways. It has an article of goodly length on H. J. Heinz, but nothing on Milton Hershey. These two men are, in the United States, of at least equal renown; they were contemporaries, and both set up their businesses in Pennsylvania at about the same time. Another oddity is the fact that there is an article on Nepal, where, I suspect, very little grows, but no article on Senegal on the west coast of Africa and the ancestral home of many slaves brought to the new world and, therefore, the source of many food memories which contributed to `soul food' cuisine.

This is not to say this is not a valuable book. Many articles give fuller coverage to many culinary subjects than even books that specialize in some subjects. Two sidebar articles on pasta and chilis, for example, give fuller lists of the varieties of these two items than many good cookbooks on the subject. The pasta article is also careful to indicate the regionality of the names of some pasta shapes. I believe the pasta article, for one, could have been even better if it had given us pictures of the various shapes. I really feel that Orecchiette doesn't really look like ears, even though all texts describing it always say it does.

The book also avoids some common mistakes with accurate information on, for example, the components of the sharp vapors from a cut onion. Unlike lots of simpler minds, the article on same points out that these tearing fumes are really composed of many different components, which is part of the reason why most methods for avoiding them don't work.

The book is so dedicated to it's no recipe policy that it doesn't even give us articles on some basic preparations such as `buerre blanc'. It also does not even include recipes for such basics as mayonnaise or pesto.

This book is very good, but it is not as valuable a culinary resource as the aforementioned `Larousse Gastronomique' which provides thousands of basic recipes and pictures for just about everything imaginable, including uniforms of Renaissance culinary guild members. If you are a foody who must own every notable book on food, then buy this. But, if you are only interested in books to help you cook, get the Larousse. Note that the hardcover version of this volume is published by Oxford University Press and is therefore known as `The Oxford Companion to Food'.

The Penguin Companion to Food is the paperback edition of the Oxford Companion to Food, so see more reviews there.

Considering how big a part food plays in our lives, it's amazing how little most of us know about it. This is a book for those who are curious about what they eat or what they might be eating if they lived in another culture. The range of information is astonishing, especially considering that this is the work of one man: for example, you will find articles on Babylonian cookery, Bacon, Bacteria, Badger, Bagel, Baking, Banana, Barbecue... Well, you get the idea, and that is just a selection of the Ba's! As a Canadian, I was curious to see how much there was on the cuisine of my native land, and I was not disappointed: saskatoon berries, moose nose, and poutine are all mentioned, and there is a full page on Canadian cookery in general. The author is not afraid to dive into some of the darker corners and might even be suspected of having a taste for the bizarre -- devoting several paragraphs, for example, to the subject of whether anyone actually eats the brains of live monkeys. There is a wealth of knowledge here, presented in a literate and entertaining way.
