5 out of 5 stars The Best Sister Frevisse so far........2003-11-25

This is by far the best book so far in this series. The medieval flavour is very strong and the characterizations are quite wonderful. The mystery itself is an easy one to figure out and the actual murder does not occur until the near the end of the book, but the plot leading up to this is very vivid and has the right atmosphere and sense of time and place. In this book we see Sister Frevisse at odds with the prioress in her convent. She must fight against her dislike and distrust of Dame Alys in order to be able to deal with the problems beseiging St. Frideswide's. Not only are Dame Alys' many relatives taxing the nunnery's provisions with their extended stay, but the relatives also bring danger to St. Frideswide's. Sister Frevisse must be her sharpest to forestall the imminent dangers that keep cropping up.

4 out of 5 stars A slice of medival live.......2000-10-15

Margaret Frazer in The Prioress' Tale creates an interesting slice of medieval of life at the 15th century priory of St. Frideswide. The characters are ones you will want to meet again in other books.

Domina Alys is single minded, mean spirited and petty in her vision of an improved priory. Those who do not join forces with her are her enemies, chief among them is protagonist, Sister Frevisse an intelligent and likable nun who is much worried about the downward direction the priory is taking. She rightly believes that nothing is as it seems to be.

The mystery itself almost seems secondary to the story of the characters and the priory. Frazer slowly builds to the mystery. In fact, the murder does not occur until late in the book. There are other secrets to be revealed besides "whodunit".

This is a good quick read and I am looking forward to reading other Margaret Frazer books in the Sister Frevisse series.

5 out of 5 stars An excellent addition to the Dame Frevisse series........1997-07-26

The reign of the tyrannical Domina Alys continues in this next volume of the Dame Frevisse series. The story opens with Domina Alys' relatives having infested the priory, consuming the priory's provisions, and making general and specific nuisances of themselves. Combine this with the contruction of a tower, the kidnapping of a prospective bride, Domina Alys' pettinesses and revenges, the appearance of an old "friend", and the murder seems like just another event. Margaret Frazer excels in depicting the period with great vividness and accuracy. It is a pleasure to watch events unfold and read the excellent dialog. Her characters continue to develop with Dame Frevisse becomming more tolerant of others' failings, Sister Amicia actually able to keep a coherent thought in her head, and Sister Thomasine continuing her progress toward sainthood. You WILL enjoy this book!

4 out of 5 stars For fans of medieval mysteries.......1997-07-06

In 1439, Prioress Domina Alys of St. Frideswide's Abbey decides that the only way she can save her abbey is to bring in new novices and to find wealthy patrons to pay for the renovation and expansion of the facility. The other sisters, especially Sister Frevisse, loathe Alys' tyrannical leadership. To Alys, the sisters do not appreciate all she is doing to save the facility. She blames it on the lackadaisical leadership of the previous two Prioress, who were more preoccupied with God than the day to day running of an Abbey.

To make matters worse, at least in the mind of Sister Frevisse, Alys allows her relatives, the violent and argumentative, but rich Godfreys to stay as guests. However, Alys may yet regret her decision when the long feuding family squabble turns to murder as one of the guests is killed. Sister Frevisse investigates the case, not knowing that she places herself and the abbey is jeopardy from a killer who prefers to remain anonymous.

The seventh Sister Frevisse mystery is a well written Medieval who-done-it, though not quite on the level of its predecessors (all are excellent novels). The story line is interesting, especially its fifteenth century background. Sister Frevisse is one of the best amateur sleuths of any era, but new readers to the series will not gain the richness of the characters as previously described in this series earlier works. Fans of the historical mystery Medieval novels will, however, enjoy Margaret Frazer's latest novel, THE PRIORESS TALE and shouldn't pass it by.

Algis Budrys said it best: "Most writers show and tell. Nina Hoffman sings." Past the Size of Dreaming is the wonderfully inventive continuation of A Red Heart of Memories. Readers rejoin the wandering witches Matt (Matilda) Black and Edmund Reynolds as they revisit and heal the painful past. For those who've not yet read the first book, Hoffman reintroduces them with "Matt Black smiled. She had found Edmund three months earlier in a pioneer graveyard, and she had stayed with him ever since." Matt "spent most of her time talking with things instead of people" because "anything shaped by humankind might have a story to tell her." Edmund and Matt have found two of Edmund's childhood friends, Nathan the ghost and Suki (Susan), the girl Edmund rescued from an abusive father. They seek the others, Julio, Deirdre, and the twins, Terry and Tasha. To defeat the demon-controlling master wizard who once abducted Julio and is still controlling Galen, his apprentice, they must pool their magical resources. --Nona Vero

                    Book Description

Her first book introduced Matilda Black and Edmund Reynolds, whose unique abilities and challenges united them-and brought them to a wonderful old "haunted house" that sheltered Edmund and his friends when they were young. Now, that House calls them to reach out to those friends-and reunite them to defeat a powerful, dangerous magic.

"Her ingenious plotting explores memory, the nature of recollection and personal growth." (Kirkus Reviews)

"A lasting addition to the urban fantasy canon." (Booklist)

"Chronicles the destinies of young men and women as they try to come to terms with the magic that flows through the world around them...sensuous prose and gentle humor add a graceful charm to this fantasy adventure." (Library Journal)

                    Download Description

"From the Bram Stoker Award-winning author of A Red Heart of Memories comes the continuing spellbinding story of the wandering witch Matilda (Matt) Black, who possesses the ability to communicate with inanimate objects and see into people?s dreams?and her companion Edmund Reynolds, a young man with magic of his own who is only beginning to come to grips with his past and his powers? The two travelers have come to the town where Edmund grew up, and found shelter, at least for a while, in the benevolently haunted house that was a refuge for Edmund and his friends when they were children. But the house begins to speak to Matt, urgently, telling her that she and Edmund have to leave, to seek out the long-scattered friends. As they search, they find that some have grown up to be ordinary, untouched by any hint of wild magic. Others, though, have been transformed in ways that defy imagination. Now, they must all come together once again, in the place that none has ever forgotten. For a darkness is rising, a dangerous, powerful entity. And the only chance of stopping it lies in the hearts of the lost children of the house? Nina Kiriki Hoffman, the phenomenal author Locus calls ?one of a kind? and ?an American original,? presents a novel of the bonds of friendship, the magical power of memory, and one very, very special house. "

5 out of 5 stars Filled with imagery and strong characters.......2001-07-04

When a house of witches is threatened by a greater power, the group must call in reinforcements from the past and form an even tighter band in order to survive. While familiarity with Hoffman's past titles on the theme will lend a quicker appreciation for the setting here, her fine story will engross even newcomers, filled with imagery and strong characters.

5 out of 5 stars more wonderfulness from hoffman.......2001-03-25

Nina Hoffman is a remarkable writer. Her world and characters will keep you surprised, amazed, and reading. PAST THE SIZE OF DREAMING is a worthy follow-up to A RED HEART OF MEMORIES. Readers who have wondered about Matt and Edmund since the first book will be delighted to find out more; those who have not yet met them will be delighted, too.

I recommend ALL of Hoffman's work. She's one of the most innovative fantasists writing today, and her work has appeal to both adult and teenaged readers, which is no mean feat.

                    5 out of 5 stars A Wonderful Sequel.......2001-03-11

I loved this book. I'd been looking forward to it for a long time and it lived up to my expectations. Filled with transformations and strange magic, Past the Size of Dreaming continues the story begun in A Red Heart of Memories. Having found Edmond's friend Suki and settled (temporarily) in the magical, sentient house which served as the safe haven for Edmond and his friends during their adolecent years, Edmond and Matt attempt to locate Julio and Deirdre. Matt learns of the events that helped to drive the four friends apart fifteen years earlier through dreams which the magical house sends her. When Edmond tries to find Julio with magic he fails. Leaving Suki and her ghostly boyfriend Nathan (who is trapped in the house except on Holloweens and seances) to keep the house company, Matt and Edmond go in search of Deirdre, who is relatively easy to locate. A drive to the desert finds her ensconced as a small-town, small-animal vet. She is happy to see Edmond but reluctant to return with him to the house. Using their very different magics (Edmond can communicate with the natural world, whereas Matt can communicate with human-made objects) and some common sense, they end up finding everyone, including the twin witch sisters Tasha and Terry and the person Julio has become. Everyone has changed, some more than others. As the friends get to know each other anew, an old enemy begins to move against them. I don't want to give away what happens next, as this book is filled with many fantastic surpises. The writing is supurb and fans of Ms. Hoffmans earlier work will not be disappointed. Be prepaired for an engrossing, beautiful read.

5 out of 5 stars Geat urban fantasy.......2001-02-16

Thanks to Matilda "Matt" Black, a witch with the ability to talk with inanimate objects and see into people's dreams, Edmond has regained his memory. Edmund, a passable witch, and Matt go back to House, a living entity, to see their old friend Nathan the ghost. Obtaining House's blessing, Edmund also brings his childhood friends there for a visit.

Most people on intimate terms with House have been transformed into beings with magical abilities that ultimately attract the attention of an evil sorcerer. He wants to bind this group to him. While the witches fight off the magical attack, Houses confesses that it purposely brought them together to defeat for reasons of its' own.

PAST THE SIZE OF DREAMING, the sequel to A RED HEART OF MEMORIES, is a beautiful story where evil tries to triumph over good. Nina Kiriki Hoffman is a wonderful storyteller who makes the written word sing. The characters, including House, drive the story as the motley crew wins the hearts of readers who will anxiously await the next installment in this fabulous series.

Testimonial: I suffered from bloating and flatulence for many years until I discovered Donna's recipe in her book called Coconut Kefir. It isn't an inexpensive diet for someone making less than $13,000 a year, but if done, it can make the world of difference in the way you feel and look. I also made the fermented vegetables which I am sure was part of the solution. Anyway, to make a long story short, I lost the weight around my gut in 3 months or less and I felt better and spoke clearer. I even gained more confidence, somehow.

Manufactured antibiotics kill off the good bacteria in ones intestines. Good bacteria is needed to help break down the foods that we eat. Without them, digestion is disturbed and this can bring on many diseases to the body. I freed myself by adding good bacteria in the coconut Kefir and fermented veges.

Try it...buy the book...it will amaze you.

By the way, one of my favorite soups mentioned and described in her book is called "Potato Corn Chowder"....Gotta love it.

4 out of 5 stars For the person committed to bringing their body into a healthy inner ecology.......2006-06-25

Donna Gates has created an outstanding diet (Or as I call it nutritional plan) for those people that want to focus on building their inner ecology; and then creating a healthy external body from this.
This nutritional plan is not another quick fix, but it is a way of making you look at what you put in your mouth, while educating you for making better alternatives.

There is one flaw I found with this book - Not with the diet.
I found that the lay out and information was not in sequences. This made it harder to read, than if Donna had have put the information in a sequenced order.

The results of balancing your inner ecology can help with
                    - Headaches - Low sex drive
                    - Depression - Food allergies
                    - Cancer - Joint & muscle pain
                    - Aids - Digestive problems
                    - Skin Rashes - Menstual irregularities

Donna teaches you begginning with the foundation of good health and the priciples of the body ecology diet. She educates you on how to rebuild your immune system and create a bright, healthy future.
It has several pages at the end of the book with recipes and menu suggestions.

I would say that this is not for people wanting a quick fix, or the easy way out. This is a way of life, and a life long way of eating. I know once I read this book I realised I wouldnt ever want to eat differently.

Blessings to you and your health!

5 out of 5 stars Fabulous book for anyone battling digestive issues!.......2006-05-06

My youngest has battled digestive issues since she started solids. This book gave me wonderful guidance on how to clear up those problems and help her body/gut heal. It has made a tremendous difference in her overall health. While I think her "diet" is good for everyone, it's a little too restrictive for most. I know I could never stick to a diet this rigid, but I have made a lot of dietary changes myself because of this book. Love it! Love it! Love it! Highly recommend reading this book.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent book on candidiasis........2006-03-04

Fun to read, easy to understand, very helpful. I've been working on diets for candidiasis for many years, and this bring all the best of it together, plus does not advocate for any drug. Highly recommend.

Finally, you can put aside those yellowed newspaper clippings this holiday! The New York Times Passover Cookbook collects almost 50 years' worth of delicious Seder recipes from the Times and its contributors, from Florence Fabricant's Classic Gefilte Fish to Barry Wine's Tsimmes Terrine. With more than 200 recipes, the book travels around the world of Jewish cuisine, from Artichokes, Sephardic Style--a spicy, fried, Egyptian dish--to Mississippi Praline Macaroons, a recipe that traveled with its originator from Vienna, Austria, to Natchez, Mississippi. Because the book includes recipes from both Ashkenazic and Sephardic traditions, editor Linda Amster notes that the ingredients in some recipes may not be acceptable to other communities (for example, the allspice in Claudia Roden's Matzoh-Meat Pie perfectly reflects its Arab-Jewish influences, but probably would be out of place on an Ashkenazic Passover menu).

Through the years at the Times, many Passover recipes have come from accomplished home cooks in the New York area (such as Florence Aaron's Salmon and Egg Salad). More recently, however, the paper has given some star chefs a turn at the traditional Seder dishes, so you'll also find such gourmet delights as Jean-Georges Vongerichten's Beet Tartare, Paul Prudhomme's Veal Roast with Mango Sauce, Charlie Trotter's Carrot Consommé, and Maida Heatter's Chocolate Walnut Torte. In addition to the wealth of recipes, The New York Times Passover Cookbook features a thoughtful introduction on the meanings of the Passover ritual by Joan Nathan, author of the award-winning Jewish Cooking in America. Threaded through the book are four essays by Times critics and columnists Ruth Reichl, Mimi Sheraton, Molly O'Neill, and Howard G. Goldberg. Goldberg's informative piece on Kosher wines may cause you to put the sweet Manischewitz aside for a dryer Israeli Cabernet or a Californian Semillon. Whether you're looking for a classic apple-nut Haroseth or a fusion-cuisine Southwestern Tsimmes Stuffed in Anaheim Chiles, The New York Times Passover Cookbook is an excellent, comprehensive sourcebook for the Passover meal. --Rebecca A. Book Description

More Than 200 Holiday Recipes from Top Chefs and Writers

At last, from the paper of culinary record, comes a treasure trove of more than 200 recipes that celebrate the delicious festivity of the Passover table. Compiled from Times articles spanning almost fifty years, The New York Times Passover Cookbook represents Jewish cuisine from all over the world.

It contains family recipes that have been passed down for generations as well as innovative kosher cuisine from such celebrated chefs as Wolfgang Puck and Alice Waters. Acclaimed Times writers Molly O'Neill, Ruth Reichl, and Mimi Sheraton have all contributed essays on the different ways that the Passover experience has enriched their lives.

Recipes from Craig Claiborne, Mimi Sheraton, Molly O'Neill, Marian Burros, and Florence Fabricant are also included, allowing the reader to see -- and taste! -- how the experts at The New York Times cook for Passover.

With dozens of fantastic main-course dishes for both meat and dairy meals, you'll have a tough time deciding between the Shad with Pineapple-Rhubarb Salsa and the Braised Moroccan-Style Lamb with Almonds, Prunes and Dried Apricots. Maybe this year your guests will savor a traditional dish like Chicken with Fresh Herbs and 40 Cloves of Garlic -- or perhaps something different, like Southwestern Blackened and Braised Brisket of Beef or Paul Prudhomme's Veal Roast with Mango Sauce. The chapter on Vegetables and Salads contains an ample selection of memorable side dishes: Carrot and Apple Tsimmes, Butternut Squash Ratatouille, the Union Square Cafis Matzoh Meal Polenta, and Beet Crisps are just a few of the flavorful recipes you'll want to enjoy all year round.

4 out of 5 stars Great for traditional Ashkenazie recipes.......2007-05-16

This cookebook has many variations of the Ashkenazic Jewish classics - chicken soup, tzimmes, brisket, gefilte fish and charoset. Many of them are excellent, but the cookbook is thin on recipes for other varieties of food. All in all, this is a good niche category cookbook.

5 out of 5 stars In response to the comment below titled "totally not for orthodox cooks".......2006-01-30

I am ultra-Orthodox (Chareidi) and I DO use matzo meal on Pesach. You are right that some will not, but the rest will. And as for vegetables that cannot be pealed, of course we use them! Even if we want to be extra makbid (strict), we can always use the Bodek kind (already checked for bugs).
Anyway, I really didn't buy or ever use this book (yet), so I do not know if it really deserves 5 stars.

5 out of 5 stars An absolute necessity if you ever prepare a seder meal!.......2003-11-12

This cookbook is so wonderful, so essential, I can't recommend it heartily enough. Perhaps my greatest endorsement is this: I really use these recipes THROUGHOUT THE YEAR, not just at Passover!

I'm the type of cook who rarely makes the same dish more than once. Here, there are several recipes I make again and again. The cover recipe, Pot Roast with Red Wine and Onions, is reason enough to order this book. The matzoh balls I make every year from these pages and they are always easy, fluffy, and to die for.

Another fantastic feature is the abundance of recipes for those "other" days of Passover--the in-between days when you're not going all out for a Seder meal but you still want something delicious.

The contributors to this book are remarkable in their expertise and their diversity. Every Jewish cook should have this book!

                        5 out of 5 stars great book.......2003-04-18

This cookbook is fantastic. Try the carrot souffle on page 110. It is delicious and has a unique texture. It is somewhat like carrot cake. However, the recipe doesn't tell you to turn it out of the pan, which you should do. Some of the recipes are difficult to make if you live in a community, as I do, that doesn't have a kosher butcher. Also, I wish that there were more simple recipes. I am struggling to satisfy my children during Passover, and this cookbook doesn't help much with that. Still, it is a great resource to have on hand.

5 out of 5 stars Favorite Passover Cookbook.......2003-03-10

I am a definite "foodie", and an Orthodox Jew. I'm always looking for new recipes to try out. I frequently take out cookbooks from local libraries to try them out, and purchase the most useful ones. There is a definite dearth of good Kosher for Passover cookbooks, so I was thrilled to find this one last year.

I am buying this one today. This is not a cookbook for beginners, but all the recipes I tried were worth the effort, and were delicious. I can't wait to try some more recipes this year. It's so nice to find some recipes for Passover that are not the usual chicken/potatoes combo. There are also many recipes to use year round.

I would also like to answer the person who said the this cookbook is not for any Orthodox Jews. He/she forgot that there are many type of Orthodox Jews. If you do not eat gebrokts (a mixture of matza meal & liquid) during all but the last day of Pesach, then there are some recipes that you will not be able to use. If your tradition (minhag) is to peel all fruits and vegetables, go ahead. You think the NY Times writers are chasidish??? Please! You can get many kosher for Passover for cookbooks with recipes from your community.

Please remember that your type of Yiddishkeit is not the only one. There are many Orthodox Jews who will not have problems with any recipes in this cookbook. And again, there are still many good recipes in this cookbook, even if you don't eat gebrokts.
