Book Description
July Fourth: New York City
Hundreds of thousands line the banks of the East and Hudson Rivers awaiting the nation's largest fireworks display. Soon the sky will explode in cascading showers of silver and gold. Everywhere, faces will turn skyward in wide-eyed wonder. Then the sky will grow dark again--but it will not be empty. The air will be filled with clouds of smoke and specks of debris will rain down everywhere. Some will pick bits of paper from their children's hair. Some will brush away still-burning sparks or embers. And some will absentmindedly scratch at the tiny, biting specks that dot their necks and arms. Will the beginning of the show mark the beginning of the end? That's what FBI agent Nathan Donovan must decide. When he is forced to enlist the help of ex-wife Macy Monroe, an expert in the psychology of terrorism, the fireworks really begin--but she may be the only one who can help him stop the Plague Maker in time.

Scripture Told As Thriller.......2007-08-20
I must say first up that this is basically a bible story with a thriller thrown in to keep you interested. That being said, the thriller was not too bad and I was not completely turned off by the heavy Christian leanings, though I could have done with out that stuff. If I had known this was Christian fiction, I never would have touched it.
The story is very character oriented and very lesson of life oriented with just enough action to keep the story moving. I liked the characters and especially enjoyed the esoteric philosophical personality of Mr. Li. Mr. Downs does not get overbearing with his preaching, though there is no mistake what this is all about and in retrospect, I would not enjoy this type of story with that in there. I found myself getting annoyed occasionally as I read through page after page of life lessons, waiting for the action to start again.
I'm not sorry I read it, but now I'm more cautious to look at the publishers who print this stuff so if I go to the bargain bin again, I won't get stuck with another thinly disguised bible lesson. That may not have been Mr. Downs intent at all, and maybe this tale was about the story first and the preaching second. However, it didn't come off that way to me. If you are a devout Christian, this may be your cup of tea, but for me, it just doesn't do it. Recommended for Christians only.
A winner!!.......2007-04-28
Loved it. Engaging characters and smooth writing. I'm gonna read all this guy's stuff as soon as I get my hands on them.
Oh, is that what Christian Fiction is.......2007-03-27
The first Tim Downs book I read was Head Game and it's an interesting read, different, and holds together pretty well throughout the entire book. I had seen somewhere that Downs was a "Christian Fiction" author, but it wasn't readily apparent in Head Game. So I went on to read Plague Maker, and I think I know what CF is now. It's the gospel retold as an action thriller, and not bad if you are into the gospel, but weird if you were just expecting a good thriller. The book is well written and researched and quite fascinating--U731 is all historically real. Downs weaves a plot worthy of Crichton, but it gets interlaced with Christian messages. The action suffers as a result, but if you are looking for a modern way to access the gospel, this is the way to go.
Tim Downs proves he's a master storyteller.......2006-10-27
Another novel about government officials (FBI, CIA, etc.) trying to stop a terrorist from executing an attack on America with a WMD? At first I was skeptical. In my opinion, this story line has been played out--alright already! But Tim Downs changed my mind. Plague Maker is a story told in the finest way--real characters, real intrigue, and (the most satisfying part of the book) real dialogue. Downs is a writer, pure and simple. If you're a reader, get the book for a great story. If you're a writer, get the book for a great story and to learn something. When it comes to scene and setting, metaphors and similes, Downs is right up there with the master, Stephen King.
Powerful Storytelling.......2006-10-18
I've read each of Tim Down's other novels. Plague Maker was one of his strongest storytelling efforts to date. I found depth in the characters and the plot twists kept me turning the pages until late at night.
Downs has turned into an excellent thriller writer. I recommend Plague Maker.

A very scary view.......2004-08-21
Fisher's 1994 warning will throw a scare into the stoutest heart. Although the problem of antibiotic resistance has been known since the earliest fanfare surrounding penicillin, only in recent years, with media attention, is the public catching a glimmer of the problem's magnitude.
Fisher's simple, well-organized explanations document the rise of resistant bacterial strains - many of them untreatable and often fatal, including strains of pneumonia and tuberculosis.
Given appropriately for, say, TB infection, antibiotics kill off marauding bacteria, allowing the body's defenses and bacterial equilibrium to return to normal. Given inappropriately for, as often happens, a viral disease such as a cold, the antibiotic destroys susceptible bacteria, leaving the field to resistant bacteria, which gorge on nutrients, thrive and reproduce. Or, given over too short a period, the antibiotic allows resistant bacteria to thrive and pass on their resistance to other infection causing bacteria, such as TB.
A particularly interesting and chilling chapter explores the possibility that antibiotic resistence is a co-factor in AIDS. Fisher claims that the HIV virus alone, which existed relatively harmlessly in Africa for decades, is insufficient to cause AIDS. He posits that resistent bacteria strains join forces with HIV to undermine the immune system and cause AIDS. To bolster his argument he offers supporting quotes from such luminaries as Luc Montagnier, the French discoverer of HIV and documents practices of indiscriminate antibiotic use among gay men and Africans.
Strongly persuasive, concluding with suggestions for reversing the trend, this is a valuable, easily accesssible, and still timely work.

The anthrax scare of 2001 is only the tip of the iceberg.......2002-12-08
The Plague Makers appears in a fully updated third edition to offer a subject even more relevant than it was in past editions: the secret world of biological warfare. The anthrax scare of 2001 is only the tip of the iceberg in lab biological weapons making, author Wendy Barnaby reveals: various chapters cover governments around the world using labs to produce deadly combinations of diseases ý and the creation of superviruses resistant to treatment.
good info; bad presentation.......2001-03-02
This book has some great historical info. Unfortunately it is very hard to get through as it is poorly written. Shame on the proofreaders.
Lots of information but poorly written........1999-11-05
This could have been a 5 star book. The book is packed with very interesting and well documented information. However, the book is riddled with errors. I found so many spelling, punctuation and grammatical errors that the book was actually painful to read. I could not read 2 pages without finding a word missing from a sentence. I can only assume that the book was not edited before publication. Without these problems, this book would have been great!
Extremely useful resource for this emerging issue.......1999-01-26
Not sure why Amazon says this isn't yet published; I bought a copy in Europe last fall (98). This is an excellent book which requires no technical pre-knowledge, yet quickly illustrates ways of spotting BW programs and also how newer biotechnologies (gene splicing etc.) make this a critical problem that more rogue players will have access to. It also contains numerous historical examples which were heretofore not well known. This should be on the bookshelf of every policymaker and citizen concerned with e.g. Gulf War syndrome, terrorism and weapons of mass destruction.

From the supplier: Antibiotic overuse may be a contributing factor to the spread of AIDS. Prolonged excessive use of antibiotics such as tetracycline may lead to suppression of the body's immune system, thus making people more susceptible to HIV virus infection.

Proves that Kirby and Ditko did it all for Marvel........2005-08-06
It has long been rumored that Jack Kirby actually wrote all those classic Fantastic Four comics and Steve Ditko wrote all the classic Spider-Man stories, then Stan Lee put his name on them. Jack Kirby explictly said so on many occasions. Well, this book pretty much proves it, because we see Stan's actual writing ability.
To put it simply, he can't write at all.
These stories are unimaginative hack-jobs that are infinitely inferior to the regular DC versions of the characters in every way, and shows none of the writing ability that made Marvel great in the day.
I guess Jack Kirby told the truth about Stan not really doing the writing, didn't he?
interesting.......2004-03-16
I'm not much of a DC fan and I am a big fan of Marvel, so I thought that this would be interesting, getting to see Stan Lee "create" the classic DC characters. And it was interesting if not great. I think he did a great job with Batman, though he's the one DC character that needs no tweaking. The Wonder Woman story was pretty interesting, though not something I'd want to see a whole lot of (though certainly better than her original version). His Superman was weak. There isn't a whole lot you can do to change Superman, so Stan Lee was sort of doomed from the start. His Green Lantern was basically Silver Surfer. Beside what can you do with Green Lantern. It was all very interesting though.
I need negative stars.......2002-10-03
This is the second graphic novel I've needed negative stars to adequately express my feelings for in the last two months. I really was taken aback by Stan Lee's writing. "He created my favorite comic superhero, Spider-man, how bad could this be?" was my thought when I bought this. The story lines are really bad. I guess the best way to describe it would be to compare the stories to the mostly bad 70's comics. This isn't something that I'll ever reread due to the poorly written stories which is a shame since I respect most of Stan Lee's work. My true review of this would be about negative 2 stars. I hated it but I didn't throw it away which I was very tempted to do with Frank Miller's DK2 travesty.
Stan Lee and DC Comics do not mix...........2002-08-20
This was a really awful book. Needless to say that the creative ideas of Stan Lee and the world of DC Comics do not mix. The character designs were weakly conceived as well as badly drawn and written. They emerge as little else then wasting space on the page, Aside from it being a publicity story, It served little purpose, I do not see what Stan could have done different with these characters, when they are all big joke ideas that come from a big joke company that is Time Warner.

This is not a modern diet book with a specific list of "bad" foods and proper breathing techniquesinstead, you'll find a series of well-planned questionnaires designed to help you root out the causes of your extra weight and formulate a plan that works for your specific issues. Dr. Kushner's Personality Type Diet Book looks at three aspects of weightyour diet (including both what you eat and when you eat it), your exercise pattern (be honest!), and any emotional ties that link the fridge to your search for inner peace. Each category you find yourself insensibly determined with percentages rather than absolute answershas its own section of carefully tailored advice. Kushner's plan involves a constant, lifelong attention to your food and exercise, complete with charts that continually reexamine motives as you move through life changes. The idea is that once you've clearly identified what's holding you from your ideal weight, you'll move along smoothly toward achieving it, and as with all dietary changes, these only work with self-motivation and honesty. Ultimately, he suggests realistic goals and lays out a comprehensive plan for long-term results. This is not an exciting breakthrough miracle plan of any sortand it is likely to be ultimately more successful than any of them. Sprinkled throughout the book are commonplace suggestions for improved health, such as walking more, keeping a food journal while beginning a program, eating more fiber and fewer trans fats, and finding substitutes for that triple-chocolate cake when you're feeling blue. The few included recipes seem obligatory rather than particularly inspired, but in general, his advice is both sound and sympathetic. --Jill Lightner

Life Lessons.......2006-06-08
This book is not just another lose weight quick scheme for an author to get money. This book will lead you down a path of living a healthy lifestyle while losing weight and teaches you along the way to develop habits based on your own personality traits to keep the weight off. This along with Dr. K's diet.com site has lead me to an ongoing weight loss of over thirty pounds so far. It's real, sensible, and very doable.
Sound Advice Enveloped in Warmth and Sensitivity.......2003-03-28
Here is sound advice enveloped in both warmth and sensitivity. I liked the "nibbles" scattered throughout the book and other practical suggestions, such as how to obtain and wear a pedometer. I am having such fun in my daily walking and competing with myself for "steps instead of miles." As a health educator who taught Nutritional Smorgasbords to elementary school children and also to groups of school nurses encouraging them to include this concept of healthy eating in their school programs. I am delighted to see this much needed book in furthering the education of the public and in such a clear and kindly tone.
This is a great book!.......2003-03-02
I think I've read every diet book ever written. They're all the same. You follow a specific plan for a while, you lose weight and then as time goes by, you drift back to your old habits and gain it back. This book focuses your weight loss on whatever habits caused you to gain weight in the first place. It's more personalized than any other diet book I've ever picked up. And it works. I'm losing weight while getting control of my eating and exercise habits. I also have more energy and don't feel like I'm depriving myself. This book is filled with so many healthy snacking options and great recipes. I also find the nibble on this sayings to be very motivating. I always wondered why I kept gaining my weight back. Now I know why and am doing something about it.
A dream come true: The most sensible approach ever!.......2003-02-23
Where has Dr. Kushner been all my life?? I've read every diet book on the market, tried every approach--always looking for the "magic" one, but never feeling satisfied--and this one is the BEST ever.
Why? Rather than offering a once-size-fits-all formula for quick weight loss, it helps first pinpoint the possible causes of our diverse, individual struggles and then offers sensible, logical and healthy lifestyle changes I wish I'd "thought of" before: No longer do I feel like I'm on a diet, but by following Dr. Kushner & team's expert guidelines, I've adopted changes that are not only manageable in everyday domestic, social and business situations, but ones that can easily last a lifetime.
Ever since I found my "personality type" after completing the quiz, made lots of the recommended changes, met with great success (and compliments from others!) I've been thinking "Why don't people ever talk about this 'novel approach' even though, as I now see, it makes the most obvious sense in the world?"
Moreover, Dr. Kushner not only seems to understand every single one of us, but he also recognizes the human reality of our situation--that deprivation and strict dietary dictates aren't what are going to give us the long-lasting results we've all been seeking, and instead offers us valid, sensible advice and tools we all can use to fit our varied lifestyles and thereby get control of our weight once and for all. In addition to all of this, I loved the tone of the book because it seems like he's actually talking to you, doing so with warmth and a sense of humor. So apart from being enormously helpful, it's also enjoyable to read.
I feel like buying this book as a gift for every single person I know who struggles with their weight. I also feel like nominating Dr. Kushner for the "Hall of Fame of Medical Professionals who Really Understand and Care about You & Me."
Finally, a doctor who understands and can help me!.......2003-02-16
I will admit that the gimmicky title made me a little skeptical but I was pleasantly surprised. There were no gimmicks. Instead, I found real help and a lot of encouragement. I really like the way the quiz directs you to find the treatment that will work for you. What Dr. Kushner recommends makes sense to me. I also like that I only have to follow the tips that apply to my patterns. The recommendations are easy to follow and practical. I've never met Dr. Kushner but I feel like he really understands me and my problems. I love how positive this book is. It's not like a regular diet.

Tasty and Easy, what else could you want?.......2007-09-20
I was very pleased with this book. I got it in the dead of winter in Michigan and made a new, sunny, summery pitcher every weekend as an escape. The recipes are simple, with enticing pictures. It is not a big book and has just enough recipes to inspire and teach you a basic formula, in which you can then plug in your own ingredients. I have made many succesful ones on my own just with whatever looks good in the produce section, and following the formula. A bottle of wine, a couple of shots of liquor, fresh fruit, and something fizzy. Delish!
The only sangria book you'll ever need.......2007-04-14
This book is great. I did not really know what a tasteful experience different types of sangria could bring to the tastebuds. This book is well written and easily readible. The illustrations are great. It is set up into different sangria categories.
Red Wine Sangria
White wine sangria
Sparkling wine sangria
Rose wine sangria
Spanish Tapas (appetizer section)
RED WINE SANGRIA-
Sparkling apple cider- Had it at Thanksgiving and it went fast. So fall themed.
Limonada Espana- Peach and lemon sangria with Licor 43 yummy!
WHITE WINE SANGRIA-
Strawberry mint-very refreshing!
Roman Holiday- grapes, peaches, lemons, and limoncello liquor. I felt like i was on a summer trip in Rome.
SPARKLING SANGRIAS-
Havana Banana- I know bananas in sangria I though it was weird to, but mixed with sparkling champagne, rum triple sec, and pineapples. It was a tropical oasis.
There are soo many more recipes that I have yet to try. I think there is a recipe for any occasion. Summer, fall, spring. For spanish, italian, even japenese style sangrias. They even have a sangria using hot peppers for you spice lovers out there.
Enjoy!!
You can even mix and match ingredients.
